By Dawn Pearson news@currentzionsville.com The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville welcomed back a hometown hero to its Be Great Breakfast. Brad Stevens, head fundraiser basketball coach of the Boston Celtics and a Zionsville Community High School graduate, was the guest speaker.

Stevens returned to his home court Aug. 12, where members and guests submitted questions for him to answer in a casual and open forum. The fundraiser was held in the main gym at the West Club where Stevens spent much of his youth refining the skills, fitness and character the club seeks to instill in youth.

The former Butler University basketball head coach opened the talk by praising what the club does for Zionsville youth and how it taught him many fundamental life lessons.

“The value of sports you can’t quantify,” Stevens said. “But it’s fun to think about how sports can add to your life.”

Stevens told a story about when his father was coaching him in a baseball game that was down to the wire. With Stevens on the mound, his father came out to talk to him. Instead of telling him what pitch to throw or where to make the next play, his father asked, “Did you remember to feed the dog?” He recalled looking at his father with a confused look on his face and said, “I don’t remember.” He then threw the next pitch and got the out.

“It’s those unusual tactics that sports are all about,” he said.

Stevens was asked who his favorite football player was. He said he is smart enough to know what town he was in and what town he works in, so he mentioned Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

Stevens also was asked how hard it was to transition from college basketball to the NBA.

Janiah Holloway and Wesley Hopkins spoke about how the Boys & Girls Club helped them transition through tough times and taught them valuable life lessons.

Hopkins, a U.S. Marine Corp. recruit, said the club “helped him learn and know the meaning of myself.” He will start with the Marines in the fall.

Holloway competed in the Youth of the Year Boys & Girls Club state finals and placed fourth.

“It is an accomplishment to meet Mr. Stevens, knowing that he went through the Boys & Girls club, too,” she said. “I’m really happy, and the club has had such a positive impact on my life. Everyone here is like family.”

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bohl, 21, in early August. He was released after posting $25,000 at the Boone County Jail. A jury trial is scheduled for Nov. 27.

In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Va., after neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups clashed with politics counter-protesters, U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks wants there to be no question on her position.

“In case people think I haven’t been clear enough, I want to be a little more Brooks clear,” Brooks said at the combined Westfield and Zionsville chamber of commerce luncheon Aug. 17 at the Indianapolis Executive Airport. “I absolutely denounce and detest neo-Nazism, white supremacist groups and any of those groups.

I fought them as a U.S. attorney. On social media, it gets a little tough if you don’t say enough. Or if people think you don’t say it strong enough, but I’m here to tell you I live in a community that I know we don’t believe in those things, bigotry, racism and violence. The protest was awful. The message was awful.”

Brooks, a Carmel resident, represents the state’s fifth district.

One person, Heather Heyer, was killed and several injured Aug. 12 when an alleged white supremacist drove into demonstrators protesting the white supremacy rally over the city’s decision to remove a statue of Confederate Army Gen. Robert E. Lee. “We have to renew our commitment to healing our country,” Brooks said. “I was pleased people peacefully had a sit-in to say this is wrong in the city of Indianapolis.

Peaceful demonstrations are fine. We also have to realize things that made us different in this country also made us great.”

Brooks, a Republican, said she was proud when then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (now U.S. ambassador to the United Nations) made the decision to remove the Confederate flag from the statehouse after the shootings in an historic African-American church in Charleston in June 2015. Nine people were killed by Dylann Roof, a white supremacist who had posted social media photos of himself with the Confederate flag.

Asked about President Donald Trump’s comments blaming many sides for the violence, Brooks did not want to comment directly on his statements.

“I’ve been trying to be focused on reminding folks that we as leaders need to lead and bring the country together, and that’s how I want to comment,” Brooks said.

Rain dampens revenues

Wet weather has been a problem for the Zionsville Golf Couse this summer, leading to its lowest-ever regolf course ported gross revenues in June at $38,973, thanks to 12 days of bad weather. But officials said they prepare as best they can for weather-related revenue dips at the townowned course.

“We certainly expect an ebb and flow, and we certainly try and plan for it,” Zionsville Parks Director Matt Dickey said. “We try and plan for a bad year and don’t spend it if we don’t need it.”

Dickey said the golf course and its revenues are somewhat at the mercy of weather but that its budget is prepared to help the town stay ahead of the unexpected.

Despite heavy rainfall in June and July, the course is ahead of 2015 and 2016 numbers in terms of net profit, Dickey said.

Earlier this year, the Zionsville Park Board raised course fees for the first time in five years. Dickey said the board reviewed more than 50 courses across the state to determine appropriate fees.

Officials are also ear-marking funds for the future, putting away money for new golf cart purchases to be made in 2022 and upgraded cart paths and irrigation.

Even with the weather challenges, the course is entirely self-funded, Dickey said.

Teacher grant policy adopted

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees met Aug. 14 to discuss changes to the teacher appreciation grant policy and a resolution to include webs of support training in the community. The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Sept. 11.

What happened: The board approved the updated teacher appreciation grant policy and a new program within the Zionsville Teacher Evaluation Process.

What it means: The superintendent will determine the stipend amount for teachers rated as effective. Those rated as highly effective will receive a 25 percent greater stipend. ZCS also will offer a new evaluation option called ZTEP+. Teachers rated as effective or highly effective for the last three years are eligible for the program. “We wanted to give these teachers an opportunity to have some latitude with their evaluation process and to form some of their own professional goals and do peer observations,” said Kris Devereaux, ZCS chief academic officer.

What happened: Community Relations Coordinator Lynn Kissel, along with Dr. Amanda Slonaker, two students and a parent volunteer, spoke to the board about their experiences during Derek Peterson’s Aug. 3 presentation on the importance of youth webs of support.

What it means: Kissel said that nearly 2,000 people attended the workshop and that Peterson met with 40 ZCS students beforehand to teach them to co-lead the workshop. Peterson’s work focuses on the importance of building a web of support for youth by adding anchors, or caring adults, to their lives. “I feel that this could really make a difference for ZCS students because I feel that it breaks the barrier between youth and adults,” said McLean Carter, an eighth-grade student at ZMS.

Children who enjoy exploring vehicles and machinery will have an opportunity to get an up-close look fundraiser at aircraft during the inaugural Touch-A-Plane fundraiser beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Indianapolis Executive Airport, 11329 E. State Road 32 in Zionsville.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Flight1, a nonHoy profit that literally teaches children facing hardships to fly. During the free three-year program, participants spend time in a simulator before making three flights in a real airplane.

“This is such a unique event, because to our knowledge, no one else has done a Touch-A-Plane event like this with the ability to be up close to so many aircraft and vehicles,” Flight1 Executive Director Caroline Hoy said. “Since I have small children of my own, I love that the movie night provides a relaxing and affordable way to have an evening out with the family.”

Commentary by Brad Thompson At just about 10 p.m. on a Saturday night, as they were walking the streets, members of the Ten Point Coalition got a tip there was an armed robbery underway at the Family Dollar store about a block away. The team leader called police.

The Ten Point Coalition members are not private police. The coalition is about crime prevention, not detection. Their goal is to reduce violent crime in the neighborhoods they serve.

Coalition members try to prevent crime by forming relationships with people in the neighborhood, identifying those in need and suffering, and reaching out to help, in the name of the Lord.

The coalition supplements that emotional support with more tangible assistance. When asked what the biggest need is among people in the neighborhood, Rev. Charles Harrison, the group’s leader, is very clear: jobs. Jobs not only provide financial wherewithal, they provide self-worth. So as they walk dark streets talking to people, coalition members are on the lookout for youth who want to work.

The members of the Ten Point Coalition come from the streets they walk. It’s a very deliberate strategy to find people who have credibility in the neighborhood.

Zionsville United Methodist Church wants to walk alongside the members of the Ten Point Coalition, by supporting the mission. So the church does what it can to raise money for the cause, taking up a special collection during Lent which it presented to Ten Point Coalition team leader Wallace Nash, totaling more than $32,500.

Wrapping up August in Indiana Commentary by Ward Degler There’s something to be said for late summer in Indiana. By mid-August the incessant rain that plain talk plagued the first three months of the season has ebbed somewhat, and you can actually plan outdoor activities without carting along raincoats, umbrellas and boots.

It’s still hot this time of year, but not so humid you need to change clothes three times a day. Less rain also means the grass grows more slowly and you can actually turn off your mower between cuttings.

It’s also no secret that after three months of rain the outdoor projects have multiplied beyond all human understanding. Maple seeds, for example, tend to sprout in the gutters. Last week some of mine were three-feet high.

Late summer sounds different, too.

Drive through the countryside with the windows open and you’d swear the breeze in the corn sounds like the swish of a crinoline skirt at the homecoming dance.

At night the tree frogs, crickets and cicadas offer a scratchy serenade that will

either lull you to sleep or keep you awake till dawn.

All this is normal, I guess. Except that the kids are already back in school. Sorry, but that is just plain wrong. School can’t start until after Labor Day. How else can anybody get through the required number of swimming parties? And everybody knows August is the best month of the year for those lazy all-day bicycle treks.

You know, the kind where you eat lunch at whoever’s house you roll into at noon.

Still, when the sun goes down and that golden glow settles over the back yard, there is no more perfect time to sit outside with a cup of coffee and enjoy the cooling air and the fact that the heat has finally driven the mosquitoes away.

Unless you live in Minnesota, of course.

Late August up there is when you mount the snow tires on your car and break out the long johns and the parkas.

ZPC launches retreat in Brazil

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Presbyterian Church will soon send a team of 17 people to Brazil to carry on the tradition of the Great faith Banquet. ZPC has been hosting the three-day, non-denominational spiritual retreat at its building since 1992.

The idea to take the Great Banquet to Brazil was inspired by a 2012 missionary trip.

“My wife, Kay, and I took a mission trip to Brazil in 2012. On that mission trip I shared my faith journey and the impact the Great Banquet had on my relationship with Christ,” said Steve Wright, a ZPC parishioner. “It planted a seed, and a missionary began asking questions about the Great Banquet.”

Rev. José Pezini is a Brazillian missionary living in the U.S. He participated in a Great Banquet at ZPC and felt the concept would work well in Brazil.

“He wanted to come participate in a weekend, which he did, along with two others,” Wright said. “They felt they wanted to start the process and possibly have

a Great Banquet in Brazil.”

In addition to the 17 ZPC parishioners will be 19 Brazilians who live in the U.S. that will assist with the Great Banquet in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil.

“We anticipate 20 at each the men’s and women’s banquets. They are there for the entire weekend. It’s a 72-hour event,” Wright said. “Throughout the weekend there are a total of 15 talks. There is singing, prayer, fun activities and good food.”

The event is Sept. 14 to 17 for the men’s retreat and Sept. 19 to 22 for the women’s retreat. Members at ZPC who aren’t attending can assist by signing up to pray for attendees and the event.

Family farm becomes new campus for classical education in Boone County

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Boone County residents Shawna and Bret Reinhardt had a vision for a classical education school that would be affordable and wouldn’t require driving halfway across cover story a neighboring county.

That vision will become reality when the Boone Prairie School opens in September on the Reinhardt’s Whitestown property. Bret Reinhardt built the school’s structure while his wife, Shawna, built the curriculum.

“This curriculum is a little different,” Bret said. “It’s really focused on teaching up to everyone and challenging the kids from the very beginning.”

Hands-on interactive learning will be a focus of the school’s programming, which dovetails with Rachael Cotteleer’s plans.

Cotteleer, who will teach fifth- through eighth-grade at the school, received a grant from the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship last spring for her proposed PawCotteleer sitively Powerful Program. She was among 100 teachers across the state to receive a $12,000 grant, which allowed her to explore the therapeutic connection between people and animals. She spent the summer finding ways to incorporate that connection into a plan for students.

“I love animals and I love teaching, and to fuse it together, I think there’s such potential,” said Cotteleer, who has been teaching for 23 years. “Do something that you love and are passionate about and that will renew you and bring you back as a more impassioned educator. I really hope that I can convey the potential of that healing and that empowerment that the animals can give you.”

The grant was written while she was employed in a special education role with Western Boone Community Schools, but she was able to tweak it to meet the opportunities at Boone Prairie. Cotteleer was ready for the change to middle school and found a good option in Boone Prairie.

To build her lesson plan, Cotteleer traveled to Canada, Utah and southern Africa to discover ways animals can open people’s hearts.

In Canada, she visited Dreamcatcher Nature-Assisted Therapy Association, which utilitzes a menagerie of animals for therapy.

During one poignant session, students cared for donkeys and hens during a therapy.

Cotteleer found herself caught up in the therapeutic bond several times while working alongside volunteers and spending time with animals. Lying bareback on a horse, breathing with it and feeling the horse’s heartbeat, she said she felt “this tightly wound part just released.”

munity involvement such as senior citizens caring for kittens and yoga classes with a variety of animals producing an additional sense of relaxation.

In South Africa’s Bambelela Sanctuary she was able to tend to special needs monkeys unable to return to the wild. She was struck by the similarities between animals and humans.

“My motto has been, ‘Disability does not mean inability,’” Cotteleer said. “I was really struck that even within the animal kingdom that applies.”

She finished her travels at Namibia’s N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary, tracking animals and releasing rescues into the wild.

“Animals have personality and stories just like we do,” she said.

During her travels, Cotteleer was amazed by the bond between humans and animals.

“I can go halfway across the world and animals are still giving the same connection,” she said.

Cotteleer would like stu-Rachael Cotteleer dents to learn compassion for people of all abilities and explore how animals can help facilitate conversation. Her classroom goal is for students to research local therapy programs where animals are used to help others, such as hippotherapy and veterans programs.

“I want the students to be really empowered and see where it goes,” she said.

Cotteleer plans to partner with special education programs at nearby public schools and collaborate on the power and potential of working with animals.

Because Boone Prairie is on a farm, there will be chickens on school property, and Cotteleer is eager to teach students that many animals can be used for therapy.

“I think the vision is that kids will really learn that if you have an idea you can be empowered to do your own business,” she said.

Boone Prairie School will open in September at 5175 E 300 S in Whitestown with five teachers and approximately 30 students who will have classroom lessons three days a week and be home-schooled the other two days.

The Reinhardts created the school after exhausting other educational Latin-based programs in the area, determining them to be too far or too expensive.

“As a family we decided that we were willing to make an investment in our children’s education, but we wanted to investigate to find if there was a better way,” said Bret Reinhardt, a father of four.

Through his research into co-ops and homeschooling, Reinhardt discovered Hillsdale Academy in Michigan, part of Hillsdale College, which offered to provide curriculum support and teacher training if the Reinhardts were willing to open a school.

The couple toured other schools being supported in the same way and discovered a few doing what they would like to do with regard to board governance and administration. The Reinhardts plan to “take this classical Latin curriculum and give it a practical education in a farm environment,” Bret said.

This year, students will be in preK through eighth grade, although the school’s curriculum will eventually be extended through 12th grade.

“The reality is that we knew our lower grade classes would be where we would grow,” Brett said.

Long-term, the Reinhardts plan to add university level courses through Marion College and IUPUI to offer a dual credit program for high school grade levels.

Bret said class size will never exceed 12 students mixed from similar grade levels.

The school is seeking nonprofit status and will be able to keep tuition affordable because the Reinhardts own the property and plan to offset expenses through other businesses on the property to subsidize the school.

“We’re not educators, we’re business people,” Bret said. “It’s been well-thought out.”

For decades, television brought us a shared culture. Mostly, we watched the same programs on the same channels at the same time. Each Tuesday morning, we could gather around the water cooler, or even more likely the Mr. Coffee, to exchange a few laughs about the antics of Chrissy and her roommates Jack and Janet – not to mention that silly Mr. Furley. Just as surely, the next day we’d gather again and, this time, the topic would be who shot J.R. Even the commercials lent themselves to our common understanding.

They taught that every group had one kid who was fearless. When mom brought home a cereal that was supposed to be, ugh, good for us, we could always call on Mikey because, as we all knew, “he would try anything.” Then as Mikey clearly loved the new breakfast treat, we would understand that the food is good and that we should be more willing to experience the new and improved. By the time the other slackers were pouring a bowl, Mikey had moved on to his second.

But, is there a downside to being out in front? If we laud those bold enough to seek the first-mover advantage, why don’t more of us seek it? The truth, one could suppose, is that there are a lot of “new” cereals that are terrible, awful concoctions unfit for human consumption. And that for every happy Mikey, there are scores of others working for days to rid themselves of the terrible aftertaste of a cereal experiment gone wrong. And if there are times when we are best served by letting, even encouraging, someone else to lead the pack, how do we discern? Do we forfeit potential advantage in avoiding risk or assume risk to gain potential advantage?

In a few short hours, Doo and I will be depositing our firstborn on the steps of his college dormitory. We’ll wish humor him well, dole out some hugs and kisses, and of course remind him to make good choices and do his best. The question is, will we drive away with tears in our eyes, mourning the end of our son’s childhood, or will we stop at the nearest bar and celebrate with tequila shots? I’m betting on the latter. Why? Historical precedence.

Though we’ve never sent a kid to college, we have experienced four “first days” of kindergarten, four fifth-grade graduations and countless other academic milestones.

And not once, with the exception of a fluke Chick-fil-A drive-thru incident last May, have I boo-hooed. For many Augusts, in fact, I guzzled mimosas with my cul-de-sac peeps to welcome back that beautiful yellow bus and toast our children as they climbed aboard. Going off to school was a magical moment for me when I was a stay-at-home mom, and I thanked Baby Jesus every day that my kids were old enough to leave me for six to eight hours.

I don’t think I will feel very different this afternoon. Our 18-year-old is ready to leave us, and quite frankly, we’re ready for him to go. We love him, but he’s in that weird split-personality place where he’s both an adult and a teenager, at times independent and quite needy at others. It’s time for him to spread his wings and either fly or fall.

Luckily for us, he’s chosen to take his first flight 90 minutes away.

Nope, I don’t predict any tears today.

A true veggietale Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have just seen the government’s reissued dietary guidelines online. I’m not a fan of the current administration, but I humor thought in this area they were going to cut us some slack - or a least a big piece of chocolate cake.

I can exercise five times a week, cut down on carbs, eat three fruits a day and choke down eight glasses of water (if I get to count Scotch and water). I can eat cod once a week for the omega fat benefits.

But I can’t do 11 vegetables a day. No way.

This new food pyramid, which would make pharaohs roll over in their graves, now suggests that we need almost a dozen servings of the green, yellow and orange stuff every day.

If God can make a waterfall, why can’t broccoli taste like mint chip ice cream?

When you’ve got the gift of miracles, flaunt it. If all these things are so good for you, why weren’t they made better tasting?

Wouldn’t you just love to hear your kid say at McDonald’s, “I’d like a Big Mac and a large order of beets, please”?

My wife is a health nut. She suggested that instead of seeing vegetables as tiny

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com A local family wants to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation by sharing the story of their 8-year-old daughter, Taytum. According to donatelifeindiana. transplant org, there are 118,554 Hoosiers waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

Zionsville resident and local dentist Bethany Geyman is a mother of five and owner of Bethany Geyman, DDS. She and her family are avid supporters of organ donation after discovering that Geyman’s youngest daughter, Taytum, suffers from a rare disorder called biliary atresia.

Biliary atresia is a disease of the liver, bile ducts and biliary system. Symptoms develop in infants who are 2 to 8 weeks old.

The disease blocks bile flow from the liver to the gallbladder, trapping it inside the liver and causing cirrhosis and liver failure.

The disorder effects roughly 1 in 15,000 to 20,000 infants.

“We were devastated, as after six weeks in the NICU, we thought we were finally going home but come to find out our journey was just beginning,” Geyman said.

Symptoms of biliary atresia include jaundice, dark urine (due to a build-up of bilirubin), echoic (clay-colored) stools, weight loss and irritability.

Geyman said Taytum had always been jaundiced during her stay in the NICU, but the real concern was the color of Taytum’s urine.

“It looked like orange juice,” Geyman said.

allow bile to drain. Geyman said despite the surgical success, the majority of children with biliary atresia require a liver transplant at some point in their lives.

Geyman said Taytum suffers from a compromised immune system, is at risk for cholangitis, has portal hypertension, liver cirrhosis and Hashimoto’s disease.

Despite the afflictions, Geyman said Taytum loves to dance, swim and play with friends.

“She has a rare zest for life in general,” Geyman said.

Brooks coming to Whitestown

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Brooks Running Company is set to break ground on a new footwear and apparel distribution center in relocation Whitestown this fall.

The company announced Aug. 9 it would relocate the warehouse, currently in Sumner, Wash., to Boone County. The move will create more than 130 new jobs.

The Boone County Economic Development Corp. worked for several months on the project. The site was one of three finalists for the warehouse.

“It’s always exciting to Whitehead win a deal and welcome a well-known brand name company into our community,” said Molly Whitehead, executive director of the Boone County EDC. “They will not only bring new jobs and capital into the community, but Brooks has a robust corporate giving program/policy as well. We just really believe they will be good community partners.”

Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton agrees. “(We are) thrilled to welcome Brooks Sports into our Whitestown e-commerce family,” Norton said. “Brooks will be a nice addition as they take their place next to already well-known and established businesses like Amazon, GNC and AmerisourceBergen, just to name a few. In the past few years, we’ve seen unimaginable growth in our industrial sector, proving once again that Whitestown is not only a great place to start and grow a business, but a community that employees thrive in and enjoy being a part of.”

The Seattle-based company will build a

new 400,000-square-foot facility in the AllPoints at Anson Business Park.

“With Whitestown being the fastestgrowing community in Indiana for many years now and proving to be a good location for individuals and families, that certainly helps us in economic development efforts,” Whitehead said. “Employers want to know they have the workforce they need in a certain time frame or distance. We can show companies that because of where we are geographically located.

Between Lafayette and Indianapolis, we are able to pull from two metropolitan areas for employees, so that is another benefit we bring to the table.”

Norton said any time 130 Norton new jobs are added to the community, it’s exciting.

“New jobs can potentially bring new residents and consumers to an already booming environment that continues to prosper and flourish as the quickest growing area, not only in Boone County, but in all of Indiana,” he said. “Whitestown is and will continue to be a destination spot for corporations and private citizens alike.”

Landing another well-known company such as Brooks only helps the EDC in continuing to market the area, Whitehead said.

“One of the questions we often get asked is, ‘What are the other companies in the area?’” Whitehead said. “It says something positive about the workforce and the overall business climate. We have the land companies would be able to build new buildings on and the workforce as well, which is certainly helpful to us. It’s a good time to be in Boone County.”

The distribution center is set to open in early 2019.

Dance contest to benefit Meals on Wheels

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Meals on Wheels of Hamilton County is hoping some smooth dance moves will translate into some giving back needed funds.

The nonprofit’s Dancing With Our Stars will be held 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 7 at the 502 East Event Centre, Carmel. St. Vincent and Medxcel are the presenting sponsors for the group’s largest fundraiser. Beth Gehlhausen, the nonprofit’s executive director, said the goal this year is to raise $65,000, well above last year’s total of $25,000.

“That’s a huge leap, but we had some things happen that impacted participants being able to attend due to two of our dancers not being able to continue on due to some health issues,” Gehlhausen said.

During the past year, Gehlhausen said Meals on Wheels served approximately 166 people a month, which equals to more than 4,400 meals that go through Hamilton County.

The fundraiser will benefit the Sponsor a Senior program, which helps seniors that need financial assistance to pay for the meals.

between 2015 and 2016 to the tune of about 112 percent,” Gehlhausen said.

Gehlhausen said the nonprofit budgeted $34,000 to pay for those meals, which actually cost nearly $71,000.

“Last year, for example, a little over 50 percent of the people we served fully paid for their meals,” Gehlhausen said. “The other 50 percent were on our Sponsor a Senior program or had funding through CICOA (Central Indiana Council on Aging). Our concern is we are going to see more people that have need. We’re concerned that if this growth continues we might not be able to serve everyone all at once, and we might

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Tim Wright felt a sense of sadness when he learned the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus would end its 146music year run in May. “It’s a piece of Americana and our past that is gone now,” Wright said.

Wright, 65, was working with John Stevens Jr. earlier in the year when he shared his thoughts.

“I told him I’d been thinking about this idea for a song to honor the passing of that era,” said Wright, a Carmel resident and a member of The Wright Brothers.

That led to the two combining talents to write “Since the Circus Left Town,” which was released as a music video in July as a farewell tribute to The Greatest Show on Earth. Stevens, from Crawfordsville, sings while Wright sings harmonies and plays the Dobro, harmonica and mandolin.

“I don’t think the circus was as thrilling to younger people because of everything that is accessible on the internet,” Wright said. “You go to a movie nowadays, there is so much special effects, so seeing a lion jump through a hoop doesn’t do much for

When Wright started writing lyrics, it was more history-oriented.

“John took it and made it more personal,” Wright said. “Mine was more like a third person, and John’s take was first person.

We got together again and hammered the lyrics. John wrote all the music.”

The music was recorded at Keith Claghorn’s KC Pro Studio. The Children’s Museum and the old Crawfordsville High School gym were two locations used for filming.

The song can be found on YouTube and on Facebook. It had gotten more than 23,000 Facebook views in the first six days.

“We just wanted to say something. We didn’t really expect the response we got, so we’re thrilled,” Stevens said.

Down the rabbit hole Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt “A quandary I would love to see you address in a future column is the proper usage of ‘further’ grammar guy vs. ‘farther’, and if there are any helpful tricks for remembering which to use when.” -Taina, Zionsville The easiest way to decide which word to use in your specific syntactic situation is this: use “farther” when you’re referring to physical distance and “further” when you’re describing figurative or metaphorical distance. What’s great is that “farther” has the word “far” in it, and you already know that “far” deals with physical distance.

I’ll share a hypothetical example. Suppose Rick and Gary are flying to the moon to expose the moon landing as a massive, deep-state government cover up. For the record, I do not subscribe to that opinion, but Rick and Gary do. They’ve built a space vessel, successfully rocketed out of Earth’s upper atmosphere and are now cruising weightlessly toward their lunar destination. Gary, who is chronically impatient, turns to Rick, the pilot of the

ship, and asks, “Rick! Are we there yet?

How much farther?” Gary is referring to a physical distance, so “farther” is correct.

Later in their journey, Rick and Gary are passing time by discussing various conspiracy theories. As Gary rambles on about how lizard people actually built the pyramids, he remarks, “Rick! Don’t you get it? How much further down the rabbit hole can we go?” Although one could argue that a rabbit hole is a physical distance, in this instance the rabbit hole Gary refers to is figurative, so “further” is correct.

On the bright side, if it’s unclear which word to use because you can’t determine if you’re referring to physical or figurative distance, most experts agree “farther” and “further” can be used interchangeably.

The heart of Madrid

Madrid is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with broad tree-lined boulevards and a number of vibrant travel plazas. One of those plazas can legitimately be called the physical and emotional heart of the city.

The Plaza de Cibeles, at the intersection of two important streets, derives its name from the Cibeles Fountain, a magnificent marble fountain depicting Cybele, the protector of the city, riding a chariot pulled by two lions. Cybele, sometimes called the Great Mother, is an ancient Anatolian goddess of fertility and nature. According to Greek mythology, Cybele turned Atalanta and Hippomenes into lions after she caught them having sex in one of her temples, demonstrating her power over nature. The Cibeles Fountain, designed by Spanish artist Ventura Rodriguez in 1777, was placed in front of the Prado Museum in 1782, where it provided water for Madrid residents and their horses. In 1895, the fountain was moved to the center of what was then known as the Plaza de Madrid. The plaza

quickly assumed the name of the fountain, which had become the symbol of the city.

The Plaza of Cibeles is surrounded by four distinctive buildings, each of which anchors a different Madrid neighborhood.

The design of the most beautiful of the four buildings, combining gothic and classical elements suggesting a medieval cathedral, belies its prosaic original purpose as the headquarters of the Madrid Postal Service.

Called the Palace of Communications when it opened in 1919, the building became Madrid’s city hall in 2011 and is now known as the Palace of Cibeles.

After significant victories by Real Madrid, Madrid’s professional football (soccer) team, the team and its fans congregate in the Plaza de Cibeles and plant the team flag atop the figure of Cybele. Nothing more eloquently confirms that the plaza is the heart of Madrid.

Duties: Working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Facilitate weekly support groups. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials and speakers.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as requested.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community, as needed.

Represent the agency in public and private presentations to increase awareness and educate audiences as to victim-related issues.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
