Whitestown officer is county’s first female motorcycle cop

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Whitestown Metropolitan Police Dept. Officer Elizabeth Campbell recently became the first female moLAW ENFORCEMENT torcycle officer in Boone County.

She rides a Harley-Davidson on some of her police shifts.

“I kind of grew up around motorcycles. I rode dirt bikes and those sorts of things,” Campbell said. “My dad isn’t a mechanic, but he builds motorcycles on the side as a hobby, so I had a lot of exposure to them growing up.”

Campbell jumped at the chance to be part of WMPD’s ‘Cycle Program’.

“Honestly, I hadn’t been on a bike in about 10 years prior to this motorcycle position,” Campbell said. “They sent out an email asking who was interested and who had a motorcycle permit or license. Only two of us showed interest, so they sent the two of us to the cycle school.”

Training is rigorous and takes about two weeks to complete.

“I appreciate the opportunity to go through the school because it is very difficult,” Campbell said. “There was a group of great instructors. Kudos to them, because they do everything to help you succeed.”

Campbell embraces the opportunity to be a cycle officer.

“I think it’s an honor and a privilege, and if other departments had the opportunity to have cycle programs, I probably wouldn’t be the first female,” she said. “It’s just about access, timing and pouncing on the opportunity when it came about.”

Campbell works with one other full-time cycle officer, Darrick Deeter.

“We get a lot of leeway how we as officers want to do it,” Campbell said. “I’ll get out on the motorcycle in the morning when the heat and humidity isn’t as bad. Then I’ll put it up and get into my car.”

ZCS finalizes plans for year

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville school board met Aug. 13 to hear presentations regarding preparations for the school year.

Dan Layton, chief techEDUCATION nology officer, said the district will launch its single sign-on software this week. Students will be able to access documents, online textbooks, applications and more on one dashboard under one username and password. Students will see only resources specific to their courses, so it is tailored to their education.

ZCS will again offer ZTEP+ (Zionsville Teacher Evaluation Plan) this year in addition to the original ZTEP. ZTEP+ offers eligible teachers the opportunity to pursue one professional growth goal throughout the year and conduct

multiple peer observations. Teachers rated as effective or highly effective three consecutive years are eligible for the program.

Chief Academic Officer Kris Devereaux said of the 264 eligible employees, 71 percent chose to participate in ZTEP+, an increase from last year’s 59 percent.

Chad Smith, ZCS safety specialist and energy manager, discussed the district’s progress with police partners. Smith said he and other staff members have met with officers to discover ways to enhance the partnership.

Smith said the district had its first 911 call last week and a police partner was on the scene within one minute. The situation was not an emergency and wound up being a positive incident because everyone got to practice the new procedures.

Synagogue vandal suspects arrested

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Two people have been arrested for spraypainting anti-Semitic symbols at a Carmel synagogue.

Nolan Brewer, 20, of CloverUPDATE dale was charged Aug. 16 in federal court with conspiracy to violate civil rights, which has a maximum sentence of 10 years if convicted.

Investigators said the Carmel Police Dept. arrested another suspect but declined to provide identifying information or additional details.

Officials at Congregation Shaarey Tefilla on W. 116th Street discovered the vandalism, which included two Nazi flags and iron crosses, July 28 on a brick dumpster enclosure. It also appeared that small fires had been set nearby.

According to court documents, Brewer told investigators that his motivation for the vandalism at the synagogue was because it was “full of ethnic Jews.”

“The statements he made made it clear that his intention was not to be a prank,” U.S. Attorney Josh Minkler said at an Aug. 16 press conference. “His intention clearly was serious, and that was to impact people and their right to worship in the place they choose in the way they choose.”

Investigators received a tip July 30 that linked Brewer to the vandalism. They obtained video footage from Walmart in Greencastle that appears to show Brewer — who looked to be wearing a German militarystyle camouflage jacket — and another individual purchasing black and red spray paint.

When law enforcement apprehended Brewer Aug. 15, he was wearing a jacket that appeared to match the one in the video and had black and red spray paint in the trunk of his car. Investigators also found items that could be used to cause a small explosion, the affidavit states.

Minkler said it’s not clear why Nolan chose the Carmel synagogue as his specific target.

Congregation Shaarey Tefilla Rabbi Benjamin Sendrow said the local Jewish community continues to be encouraged by the support it has received since the vandalism occurred.

CPD and the FBI are continuing to work together to investigate the incident. Brewer is in the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service and has a detention hearing set for 3 p.m.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN Construction of the CONSTRUCTION C.R. 400 South to the C.R. 300 South connector on the east side of Whitestown, including the construction of the new bridge over Jackson Creek (Boone County Bridge No. 190), is expected to open later this month. The corridor is developed as a two-lane roadway with the ability to easily expand to a four-lane divided roadway in the future.

The Indiana Dept. of Transportation has begun a construction project resurfacing I-65 from 1 - 1.5 miles south of Ind. 39 to just north of I-865. This work is planned for the overnight hours to minimize the impact to the traveling public. There will be times overnight the interstate will be down to one lane, otherwise there will be two lanes open to traffic. This restriction is scheduled to last through the end of November. This project was awarded to Rieth-Riley Construction for $13.8 million. This work also includes resurfacing the ramps at exits 130 and 133.

The Indiana Dept. of Transportation has closed Ind. 47 over I-65 in Boone County.

This closure will last through the end of September. INDOT is replacing the deck on the bridge. The detour will utilize U.S. 52 to Ind. 32 to Ind. 39. The full project includes patching and resurfacing I-65 from Lebanon to near Lafayette.

WESTFIELD The Towne Road Improvement Project is ongoing, and the road is closed to through traffic from 156th Street to 161st Street. The closure began July 11, and detours will be in place through September. The project is expected to take up to four months to complete and should be finished in October.

Three box culverts will be replaced, and new ditches will be cut to facilitate better roadside drainage. Each travel lane will be widened by 2 feet, and grade adjustments along the road will improve line of sight. The intersection at Towne Road and 151st Street is now a four-way stop.

CARMEL Phase 2 of the 146th Street construction project is under way between Ditch and Towne roads. A frontage road will be available to access homes and businesses.

Phase 2 is expected to be complete this summer.

West 96th Street is closed west of Ditch Road for a storm water culvert project. The road is expected to reopen by Oct. 1.

Virtual reality will soon be in schools

“It wasn’t a traditional summer break,” Beimfohr said.

Beimfohr’s work aims to enhance the ZCS curriculum by creating virtual tours of historical landmarks across Beimfohr the state. He wants to bring his work to students by the end of the semester.

A wooden aqueduct in Metamora, the formations of Marengo Cave and the Indiana Dunes dissolving into a nearby forest are all Indiana experiences that will soon be viewed

by ZCS students, thanks to a Zionsville Educational Fund grant presented to Beimfohr in the spring.

Despite growing up in Indiana, Beimfohr hadn’t visited many of these locations and was impressed by all the state has to offer. He saw every spot he intended to see, with the exception of Squire Boone Caverns.

Beimfohr found that locations were enthusiastic about his project and hope it encourages students to visit. Tighter school budgets have reduced the number of field trips across the state, impacting tourism for many of the historic sites.

“My hope is that once our students have experienced Corydon, Indiana, or experienced Clifty Falls (State Park) that they will go home and talk to mom and dad about what they’ve learned, and maybe that sparks summer day trips,” he said Beimfohr would like to release the content by the end of the semester, but the Google

application he wants to use, which allows tours to be teacher-led, has not yet been released. Even without the Google update, the material will be available for students to view individually.

“To use it the way we want to use it, the technology is just not there yet,” Beimfohr said. ”It’s kind of neat that Zionsville is pushing the limits of what’s available.”

In the spring, Beimfohr collaborated with integration specialists from two other school districts to create virtual tours of the Indianapolis Zoo and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

In September, they will share the project via webinar to others in the state, by request of the Dept. of Education.

The threat of rain did not deter 36 artists of all levels from creating works of art in just a few hours during the Aug. 11 Zionsville Paint Out at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. Fifteen winners in four categories were awarded prizes, with the first place professional award going to David Seward of Zionsville.

Nine-year-old Claire Evans, from Zionsville, who won third place in the youth division, painted the Lincoln Park Fountain, adding fairies. She was inspired to participate after seeing other artists painting Zionsville locations and plans to learn from her experience.

“Next year, I might want to put more thought into painting before I paint,” she said.

Tom Yeo thanked the participants on behalf of his wife, Cynthia, an artist who died in 2008 and initiated the first Paint Out in conjunction with the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association.

“I’m so proud of what it’s become,” Tom Yeo said.

By Maria Cook news@currentzionsville.com For nearly two decades, fathers and sons have come to the Zionsville High School cafeteria to eat together, listen FAMILY to motivational speakers and strengthen their family bonds on the third Thursday of each month during the school year. The gatherings, called Dad’s Day Breakfasts, are entering their 17th year in Zionsville.

Indianapolis businessman Bill Bissmeyer originally began the Dad’s Day Breakfast program at Cathedral High School after losing his 17-year-old son, John, to a viral heart infection. All Pro Dads, an international organization co-founded by former Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy, teamed with Bissmeyer. With the organization’s help, Bissmeyer’s idea for monthly breakfasts grew.

Today, there are more than 1,700 All Pro Dad’s Day Breakfast groups in the United States. The Zionsville group was the second to launch.

In 2016, Zionsville lawyer John Waller assumed leadership of the Zionsville group.

“It’s a hybrid between quality family time and inspirational time,” Waller said.

Boys & Girls Club awarded grants

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville has experienced rapid growth at its Whitestown location, called the West Club.

GROWTH The organization launched a capital campaign to fund necessary upgrades to the West Club.

Because of a surge in after-school care needs and membership, BGCZ Executive Director Tim Fretz has been working with United Way of Central Indiana, the Town of Zionsville and area businesses to remodel the West Club to handle increased demands.

The $800,000 project includes converting the dance studio into an art room; building a library and computer lab; building a women’s restroom on the first floor; repaving the parking lot; installing LED lighting throughout club; removing portable classrooms; replacing basketball goals; and upgrading gymnasium efficiencies by adding insulation and interior wall liners.

The Town of Zionsville has awarded the club a $97,500 grant to help cover costs.

“These upgrades will prepare the club for the anticipated growth in the years to come

and help us serve the children of the community,” Rob Schein, board president for the organization, stated in a press release.

Lowe’s Renovation Across the Nation grant for $50,000 is being used to repurpose the upstairs, former home to Village Dance Studio, into a library, computer lab and art room. “(The upgrades) are made possible by a grant from the Town of Zionsville,” BGCZ Resource Development Director Katie Obremskey Reasoner said. “Whitestown is the fastest-growing area in Indiana at this point. Our numbers have doubled in the last several years.”

According to Reasoner, the west facility has grown about 34 percent in the last 10 years since BGCZ took it over in 2008.

“There are anywhere between 230 and 260 kids per day,” Reasoner said.

The West Club receives students for before- and after-school care from Stonegate Elementary, Zionsville West Middle School, Boone Meadow and other schools in Boone County.

“These funds will go to great use to benefit children not only in Zionsville but across the county,” Mayor Tim Haak said.

Hospital fundraises with baked goods

JAKE LAIRD MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING HELD FOR 15TH YEAR

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com If you need a good excuse to eat a donut, Witham Hospital in Lebanon will sell Rise’n Roll Bakery items August 23 from 8:30 a.m. to PHILANTHROPY 1:30 p.m. or until bakery items are sold out. The baked goods will be sold at the main entrance of the hospital.

The Amish bakery in Middlebury is partnering with Witham to bring pies, donuts, cinnamon rolls, jams, jellies, cheeses, butter, canned vegetables and more to Boone County for a fundraising event.

Proceeds will go to Witham Health Services Volunteer Organization, whose goal is to raise money for three $1,000 scholarships provided to Boone County high school seniors planning a career in the medical field, or to purchase needed items for the hospital.

Carol Whitaker, director of volunteer services and pastoral care, had the idea to work with Rise’n Roll when she was visiting another hospital.

“I thought, our hospital community would like something like this,” Whitaker said. “I brought it to our volunteer board and they were willing to give it a shot.”

Whitaker estimates how much product to order and advertises the event within the community.

Witham held its first Rise’n Roll fundraiser in 2017, and the event is now conducted two to three times per year.

“We have a good community turnout for this, and people get excited about it,” Whitaker said. “Rise’n Roll has a wonderful reputation for the quality of their goods.”

Rise’n Roll products are made fresh from scratch and are preservative-free. Items like canned vegetables offer a healthier fare. A Hoosier company, Rise’n Roll began in Middlebury and now has nine Indiana locations.

Whitaker said people were lined outside the doors at the last event. The organization has up to six volunteers who help move people through quicker.

“It’s been very well-received by the community and the hospital staff,” Whitaker said. “When you have a fundraiser that everybody’s excited about, that makes a huge difference.”

What to carry in my bicycle saddlebag?

Many bikers carry saddlebags on their bikes, holding items needed for long rides.

When it comes to choosing CYCLING your saddlebag goodies, it’s all about personal preference.

The determining factor is size.

Saddlebags come in many shapes and sizes. Many riders prefer the Boy Scout approach, “be prepared,” and carry a large bag with many items; others want something small and lightweight with only a few items.

I’ve laid out some considerations for your bag. A spare inner tube is at the top of the list. Make sure you have the right size. You may also want to bring a tire lever and a CO2 inflator, which is a small cartridge that quickly inflates a tube or tire. A multi-tool is the Swiss Army knife equivalent of bike tools and will aid in making minor adjustments while on the road.

A tire/tube patch kit is necessary for a quick fix when you run into flats. It’s best to install a new tube, but there are times when a patch is needed, such as when you

flat both wheels and only have one spare tube. Also, tire patches are different from tube patches. If you have a gash in your tire, these will help get you home.

Cash and identification are important. I have always kept a $10 bill in my bag, which comes in handy if you run out of water or nutrition and need something quick from a convenience store.

Cleaning wipes and/or nitrile/plastic gloves can get you out of a messy situation.

Sisters attend Space Camp

She and her sister, Zionsville Community High STEM School student Rachel Rockwell, attended Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Hunstville, Ala. “We got to pretend like we were doing a mission to send a space shuttle up, and another one to go to Mars,” said Rebecca, 12.

The weeklong educational Space Camp promotes science, technology, engineering and math while training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem solving.

The Rockwell sisters, two years apart in age, were in the same program.

“Space Academy is space camp for students ages 12 to 14,” Space Camp Media Manager Margie Phillips said. “They do different simulated missions and simulator-type activities. They learn about space history and the future of space exploration.”

The siblings spent the week training with a team that flew a simulated space mission to the International Space Station. The stu-

dent crew participated in experiments and successfully completed a spacewalk and returned to Earth in time to graduate with honors.

“This is for students who are interested in STEM already, so it is very STEM-focused, but we also have students who want to go on and be in the arts. They are learning teamwork and leadership opportunities as well,” Phillips said.

“I am very interested in the sciences.

Space has always been an interest of mine.

When my father told me about the camp, it seemed like a really great opportunity,” said Rachel, 14.

The camp has nearly 800 students a week throughout the summer. It operates year-round and uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Students sleep in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and train in simulators like those used

by NASA. “Space Camp was a very interesting experience, to be able to see what astronauts would actually do in an international space station,” Rachel said. “Every day we would go through a schedule where they would show us the museums and take us to lectures. We got to do very interesting simulators. We got to sit in a chair and it simulated one-sixth of the Earth’s gravity, which is what it’s like on the moon.”

Rotary Club sponsors third annual triathlon

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Rotary Club’s third annual Sprint Triathlon fundraiser will be Aug 26.

The swim portion and PHILANTHROPY event staging be at Azionaqua Swim Club, 4875 Willow Rd., Zionsville, complete with music, snacks and awards.

“We had very good success the first two years,” said Andy Liss, the club’s sergeantat-arms and 2019 president-elect. “Previously, we capped (participants) at 100. This year, we are expanding to 200 people.”

Start time is 7:30 a.m. Participants will swim 200 meters, bike 12 miles and run 5 kilometers. Registration is limited to the first 200 people.

For the third straight year, RaceMaker Productions will manage the start and finish gates and individual timing. Awards will be given for the best times for the top three male and top three females. Awards will also be presented in 10 male and female age groups.

The awards for each category are forged from a part of Zionsville history.

“We have a stack of bricks from when Zionsville re-did Main Street,” Liss said. “We cut them down and put (award) plaques on them. It’s an actual piece of Zionsville.”

The circuitous race route weaves through Zionsville and other parts of Boone County.

“The run course will begin from the pool, going along Turkey Foot Road. It’s going to be a combination of bike paths and roads,” Liss said.

Police will help control traffic on some of the busier roads. In previous years, the Holliday Road bridge was a turn point. This year, due to ongoing repairs to the bridge, organizers had to change the course.

“We’ve had to change things around a little bit,” Liss said. “We’re still going to do the Turkey Foot Trail, but instead of going left over the bridge, (participants) will go right and turn around at Michigan Road.”

With a motto of “service above self”, the Rotary Club’s objective is to serve the community. All proceeds will go toward helping the club continue its mission to help others.

The Zionsville chapter participates in community service projects such as donating to food banks, the library and other organizations; volunteering at community events; supporting foreign exchange programs; and partnering with other local organizations on global projects.

“The fundraising goes back into the community, with what we do in terms of community service,” Liss said. “We’re doing some cool things that I don’t think Rotary has done in Zionsville, ever.”

Maplelawn Farmstead restores garage with grant

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Maplelawn Farmstead, an historic site in Zionsville, rebuilt, painted and hung a new set of wooden garage doors FAMILY in June with funds from a Questers grant. Previously, the doors were metal and didn’t accurately represent the Great Depression era, as did the rest of the farm.

Maplelawn board members applied for and received a grant for more than $1,700 from the Mattsville Pike Chapter 1466 of Questers in February. Questers is an international nonprofit whose members, among other goals, strive to preserve historic items to educate future generations.

Jan Stacy, a Maplelawn board member, said it’s important to preserve the farm because its buildings and barns are so rare.

“Barns are going away. They’re replacing wooden barns with hand-hewn logs, with a more modern-type barn. That’s the evolution of the farm,” Stacy said. “The reason (Maplelawn is) so important is because it has so many buildings and you can see how a family can have animals and make a living.”

Only two families previously owned Maplelawn in its 175-year history before it was sold to the Town of Zionsville in 2003. The Zionsville Historical Society took notice of the land. In 2005, a board of directors was created and forged a nonprofit. In 2011, the farm was named to the National Register of Historic Places.

“I think every generation has something that’s special about it. The farm showing the Depression era is a real statement,” Stacy said. “It’s a hidden gem in Zionsville.”

Fort DeRussy, an Army paradise Commentary by Ward Degler If you’ve ever visited Hawaii and took a stroll along Waikiki Beach, you probably saw a sign welcoming PLAIN TALK you to Fort DeRussy. It is a stone’s throw from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, and tucked in next door to Ala Moana Yacht Harbor.

Like the rest of Waikiki, Fort DeRussy has a lovely stretch of sandy beach, grassy lawns and a myriad of coconut palms.

When I was there in 1965 there also were several bungalow cottages on the property.

Believe it or not, these houses were assigned homes for Army non-coms and their families.

Fort DeRussy is only 3 small acres. It was originally owned by Chinese millionaire Chun Afong, who sold it to the Army Corps of Engineers in 1904 for $28,000. The Army didn’t do much with it until after the Spanish-American War, when it installed a couple 14-inch rifles as a defense measure.

The guns presented a dramatic presence just by being there, pointed outward toward the ocean. They were never fired, however, until a couple days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Unfortunately, that single volley shattered all the windows in the Royal Hawaiian and the Ala Moana hotels. They were never fired again, and in the 1950s the gun facility was turned into a recreation area for servicemen.

When Afong sold his patch of land to the Army, he probably thought 28 grand was a pretty good price. There’s no way of knowing how many offers the Army has rejected since then, or for how much. Rumors were flying when I was there. Resort developers had boatloads of money and they were offering all of it for Fort DeRussy.

I’ve not been back there since I left in the 1960s, but the Army seems there to stay.

They’ve even built a new hotel on the property– the Hale Koa – just for servicemen and their families.

And when anyone mentions selling the place, the Army points out that the 14-inch guns are still there, and could still be used to defend Fort DeRussy.

Ohana House opens its doors to women in recovery

For those currently facing addiction to any drug or alcohol

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com When Michelle Standeford lost her second family member to addiction in Jan. 2016, she felt called to seek support for recovering addicts. In March 2016, she founded COVER STORY the Boone County Nonprofit Youth & Family Health Network, an organization providing evidence-based education and holistic, results-oriented recovery programming in Boone County.

“I started the movement by getting the Boone County Sheriff’s Office involved,” Standeford said. “I did personal interviews for three months with stakeholders in the county, identifying the gaps. Part of that gap was transitional housing.”

Earlier this year, Standeford’s vision came to life with the launch of Ohana House in Lebanon, Standeford a recovery home helping women make the transition from treatment or incarceration on drugrelated charges back to independent living without falling into previous habits associated with their addiction. Ohana House opened in April and is at capacity with nine residents.

“It’s been a long time coming. There haven’t been any other options for women living in Kelley Boone County,” said Kristen Kelley, Zionsville resident and BCNY&FHN president. “Prior to this they would have to move out of the county and dislocate from family and friends. I like the location because they can walk to jobs and their support groups. It just seems like it all came together really well.”

The home is operated by BCNY&FHN. The organization works with the courts and probation systems to identify potential residents.

“When you get released from treatment or jail you’re in such a fragile state,” said Michelle Ziesmer, Zionsville resident and BCNY&FHN board member and leader of Ohana House’s advisory panel. “It’s so hard to learn to do all the things without substances. And you’re on your own, or can’t get a job or whatever the obstacle may be. It’s easier to go back to using again. I think Ziesmer housing is a huge issue that we might have scratched the surface on with the Ohana House, but there is still so much more need in our community.”

The organization also serves as a liaison between the jail and the resident.

“We help facilitate when they’re getting released so that we pick them up from the jail, and we take them immediately to our house,” Standeford said.

In July, the home received certification from the Indiana affiliate of the National Alliance of Recovery Residences. The cer-

tification means the organization will be held to a standardized system of care.

“The residents are able to provide feedback online as to how our facility is being ran,” Standeford said.

The guidelines also can help potential residents when choosing a facility by providing a website with recovery homes’ meeting certification guidelines. The application process for certification is lengthy.

“They go through your financials, methods of recovery, all the way down to daily schedules and staff,” Standeford said.

The home’s name was inspired by a sign in the office of Standeford’s colleague who lost a daughter to illness. Her surviving daughter created a sign for her that said, “Ohana means family.

Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” In Hawaiian culture, the concept of ohana emphasizes families are bound together and members must work in tandem.

Many of the women on the Ohana House board have a close association with addiction. Kelley previously worked in the Indiana Attorney General’s Office as the prescription drug abuse prevention coordinator. Ziesmer herself is in recovery. Standeford lost a son and a nephew to addiction during transition from treatment.

“Michelle (Standeford) works really hard and she wants to help everybody,” Kelley said. “If anybody contacts us through our website and asks for help, she tries to find treatment or resources.

She’s just going above and beyond.”

Like any college student, Josh Bleill was imagining how his life as an adult might play out ... well, that and no doubt having a bit of fun along the way. All progressed nicely, and college led to a good corporate job. Sometimes, life goes just like it is supposed to go. Still, the attack on the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center had an unsettling and profound effect on the young executive — so much so that within two years the then-27-year-old quit his job and enlisted in the United States Marines. Not long after, he found himself in Fallujah, Iraq.

A vehicle transporting Josh was destroyed by an improvised explosive device. Days later, he awoke to learn of the fate of his two fellow passengers – both friends and comrades, including Indiana native Sgt. Brock Babb. They did not survive the attack. The caring medical staff also had the burden to help young Josh come to understand that he’d lost both of his legs as well.

Years later, Josh has distinguished himself as an author and public speaker.

Recently, he addressed an audience assembled for the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. The organization helps the kids of Marines “with particular attention given to children whose parent has been killed or wounded in action.” Josh recalled to the audience the deep sacrifice made by so many in service to our nation. Each day, he said, he was reminded that he was blessed.

On Sept. 13 at Pebble Brook Golf Club, the Scholarship Fund holds its annual tournament and fundraiser and online auction. This year’s event honors Brock.

I might have a problem. I got into an argument with one of my sisters over whether her daughter could sing a solo in a family skit I had written. Basically, HUMOR I lost my fashizite because I didn’t want to share the spotlight with a 9-year old!

And it’s not like we were performing on national television! It was for our parents’ 50th wedding anniversary party, where the audience would be entirely made up of family and the elderly. Literally, half the crowd wouldn’t even be able to hear what we were saying. But as a closet actress who has limited opportunities to showcase her subpar voice, I live for moments like this one. I wrote the lyrics, I had an artistic vision in mind — and having a cutie-patootie starlet cutting in would completely ruin the magic I’d spent hours working toward.

See what I mean? I was behaving as if I’ve dedicated my life to the theater — as if this musical homage to the five decades since 1968 were all about me, rather than my parents and their amazing marriage.

I had to get myself under control quickly, or not only would there be some unhappy people, but I’d perhaps damage my relationship with my sister.

Luckily, I retracted my head from my rear in time and acquiesced not only to Little Miss Broadway, but all 13 of the grandkids.

The finale piece, my clever rendition of the “Rent” song “Seasons of Love,” became a chorus line of voices both young and middle-aged, far exceeding my expectations.

Lesson learned? Collaboration with others, even 9-year olds, makes everything better.

New required training aims to reduce suicide rate

As kids head back to school, many of us think about backpacks, school supplies and physicals.

MENTAL HEALTH With bus schedules, class schedules and after-school activities, kids can easily get stressed about the beginning of a new school year. For some children, especially teens, this stress and anxiety exists at a dangerous level.

In Indiana, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for youth ages 15 to 24 and the fourth-leading cause of death for youth ages 5 to 14. Experts and teens list several reasons for the increase, including insufficient mental health screening, poor access to mental health services and resistance to seeking care. Suicide ideation and attempt rates also are found to be higher during the school year than in the summer.

Sadly, Hoosier youth are significantly more likely to consider or attempt suicide than their peers nationally, and Indiana faces significant disparities in youth suicide among vulnerable groups.

One in five Indiana high school stu-

dents seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. The percentage of students who seriously considered suicide increased from 18 percent in 2005 to 19.8 percent in 2015. Indiana ranks second of 34 states in the percentage of students who made a suicide plan and ranks third of 37 states in the percentage of students who seriously considered attempting suicide.

Among our neighboring states, Indiana has the highest percentage of students who seriously considered attempting suicide and the highest percentage of students who made a suicide plan.

Based on these pressing needs, the Indiana General Assembly passed youth suicide prevention legislation in the past two sessions. Effective June 30, all teachers and educators for students in grades 5 through 12 are required to participate in at least two hours of youth suicide awareness and prevention training every three years.

Rebooting the dating game Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen and I were relaxing on our deck, and after swatting a few mosquitoes, I said, “We should look into HUMOR screening in this area.”

“Dick, you’ve been saying that every year for the past 25 years. Not only that, but we are moving next week.”

A few minutes later I mentioned how quickly the summer passes after July 4.

“You say that every year around this time,” she responded.

Suddenly, I realized that after 39 years, I didn’t have a single new thought. Uneasy silence followed. Mary Ellen finally spoke.

“When it gets this hot, I think about cutting my hair shorter.”

“The concept of Bach to Rock is to teach music in a way that is really fun,” Andy said. “We want to teach kids music that they love. At the same time we want to teach them music in a somewhat rigorous way.”

The school is open to all ages and has a variety of programs for all age groups. Individual and group lessons are available in piano, voice, guitar, drum, DJ and more.

“We have programs for early childhood, toddlers, preschoolers and all the way through adults,” Andy said. “I have some senior citizens we’re teaching already.”

Andrew grew up playing music and even considered a career as a pianist. Ultimately, he pursued engineering, a path he perceived as more stable.

“When my company began restructuring last year, I decided to leave,” he said. “About that time I discovered Bach to Rock. I fell in love with the concept and the franchise and started to invest and open a school here in Carmel.”

Bach to Rock also offers MyB2R, an online dashboard providing customers real-time access to student progress and more.

“Parents can monitor assignments and understand what their children are supposed to be working on and what they’ve accomplished,” Andy said. “It also features a music

Revving up for Artomobilia in Carmel

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Carmel Artomobilia always has been a high-octane event for automotive connoisseurs. Now, its shifting into high gear to benefit another group — CAR SHOW gravely ill children.

A showcase of nearly 400 collector and enthusiast cars on the streets of the Carmel Arts & Design District, the Aug. 25 IU Health North Artomobilia is expected to draw up to 20,000 visitors from Hamilton County and the greater Indianapolis area.

Launched in 2008, the 11th annual Artomobilia will feature a dazzling array of classic cars, sports cars, muscle cars, exotic cars and supercars — of all makes and models — in 20 judged classes and 15 corrals.

“That’s the beauty of the event,” Artomobilia Coordinator John Leonard said.

“Most events are focused on a specific make or model. Artomobilia is the most eclectic automotive event in the Midwest and offers both breadth and depth of automotive interests.”

Free and open to the public, Artomobilia is the namesake attraction of the broader Artomobilia Weekend, which begins Aug. 24 with the fourth annual Fuelicious — a private auto and dining event at Lucas Estate — and the inaugural Aug. 26 SHIFT fundraiser, a private driving event to benefit the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund.

A poker run-style car rally, SHIFT is expected to attract approximately 50 drivers — in high-performance cars — for a 180-mile drive through the back roads of southern Indiana. Drivers will stop at designated checkpoints and draw a playing card, which will afford spectators a chance to admire the cars.

“The event will begin at SILO Auto Club & Conservancy in downtown Indianapolis and then wind through a set of handselected roads, picking up a playing card at each stop that favor a spirited driving experience,” Leonard said. “We’ll finish back at SILO Auto Club, where the driver with the best poker hand will win bragging rights for the rest of the year.”

Registration for SHIFT is $500 per car.

Gov’t Mule will turn to the Dark Side when it lands in Noblesville.

Gov’t Mule will be joined by MUSIC The Avett Brothers and The Magpie Salute with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville. “The Dark Side of the Mule” tour features Gov’t Mule performing some of Pink Floyd’s beloved songs. “‘Dark Side of the Mule’ has been fun because we hire background singers who are the wives of Jorgen Carlsson, the bass player, and Danny Louis,” drummer Matt Abts said. “We hire an extra keyboard player. It’s something Jorgen joined. It’s a big band. We do a theme every Halloween and New Year’s, and one year we did a Pink Floyd theme (in 2008). Someone contacted us and wanted us to do more, so we’ll do some this summer. We got all the lasers and light shows going on. Wow, what an extravaganza.”

Prior to this summer, Gov’t Mule had done just two Dark Side full sets. Gov’t Mule has performed it four times this summer.

Noblesville is one of four Dark Side stops remaining this year.

“It took a lot of rehearsal and prep to get everything working, but we love doing it,” Abts said.

Since there are two other bands, Abts said he expects there will only be time for the Dark Side set.

Abts is one of the band’s remaining original members, along with Warren Haynes, who was a longtime guitarist for the Allman Brothers.

“It’s been a blast for the last 24 years,” Abts said.

James Garner first heard the Johnny Cash’s “At Folsom Prison” live album when he was in junior high school CONCERT in the early 1990s.

“It was just so amazing to me,” Garner said. “You heard the inmates, the rawness of the music and even announcements from the prison. It was so different than anything that was on the radio at the time.”

Garner, the lead singer, is bringing his James Garner’s Tribute to Johnny Cash show to Carmel to play a “Folsom at 50” concert at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s performance at Folsom Prison. Although the concert is focused on that album, Garner said the group plays Cash’s other hits as well.

When Garner was 12, he picked up a tape of Cash’s greatest hits because his dad was going to Cash’s concert.

A couple of years later, he got to meet Cash backstage in Fresno, Calif.

“I just told him I was his biggest fan. I was so nervous my voice was cracking,” Garner said. “We shook hands and he said, ‘Glad to know you.’ It’s something I’ll never forget.”

Garner’s band performs as the Tennessee Three, which was Cash’s band, with lead guitar, bass and drums. Garner, who plays rhythm guitar, said the band has been together for 11 years. He said the show involves a lot of storytelling about Cash’s career.

Rotary’s BrewBQ set for Aug. 25

The Noblesville Rotary Club EVENT secretary is eager for the third annual Noblesville BrewBQ, set from 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Federal Hill Commons in Noblesville.

“It’s our one big fundraiser, so it supports primarily the scholarship fund for Ivy Tech Noblesville campus,” said Dixon, a Noblesville resident who is in charge of marketing/fundraising for the event. “Last year, we had 350 people. Our goal and what we prepare for is 600 people. I think we’ll be somewhere in between that.”

Dixon said proceeds allowed the Rotary to provide $7,200 in scholarships for the first two years. The Rotary Club awards the scholarships to high school graduates.

The pulled chicken, ribs and burgers will be prepared by contestants. The barbecue will be judged by a celebrity panel. Dixon said BlueSky Technology will likely put together an online poll so there is a popular vote winner. Nameless Catering is providing the side dishes.

Firing up a hot patio grill as a gathering station Commentary by Randy Sorrell A client boldly declared, “I want my place to be where our kids and their friends want to hang out.” I dig that charge! That is certainly the most OUTDOOR LIVING captivating and frequent request we are charged with.

This Carmel project resoundingly accomplished that. Although the pool in the background didn’t hurt, the adhesive that pulled it together are the multi-level patios, modern fire feature and cobblestone grill station.

Process and rough sketch Initial meetings focus on visioning and developing a relationship which fuels stories about how the space will “feel,” materials and its desired use. A quick on-site rough sketch proved we were heading in the right direction, and a few weeks later a formal design/proposal was produced. A few

design tweaks and the plan was promptly blessed by the Architectural Review Committee. The fun process can be high-energy and spilling with emotion.

Fire/grill station Fire features and grill stations are gathering magnets, comparable to your granite kitchen counter. Even when the fire is not engaged or the grill is empty, it’s a comfortable spot to start a conversation that often spills over to comfy patio furniture. It’s a launching point.

Buda Castle and the holy hand Commentary by Don Knebel Probably because of its previous association with the Soviet Union, many American visitors find Budapest unexTRAVEL pectedly beautiful and sophisticated. The Buda Castle is among its most popular destinations.

When Maria Theresa of Austria became ruler of Austria and Hungary in 1740, Castle Hill, along the west bank of the Danube River in Buda, Hungary’s capital, had been the site of palaces for 500 years. To reward her Hungarian subjects for their support of her contested efforts to assume the throne, she erected a new palace atop Castle Hill that became known as Buda Castle. In 1771, Maria Theresa obtained possession of what was reputed to be the long-missing right hand of Stephen, Hungary’s first king. She gave this so-called “Holy Right,” claimed to have miraculous powers, to Hungary, which placed the mummified fist in the chapel of Buda Castle. Having no interest of living in Hungary, Maria Theresa allowed an order of nuns to use Buda Castle but soon decided that her lavish palace was no place

for a nunnery. She evicted the nuns and the palace housed a university. The palace was substantially damaged as it repeatedly changed hands. When Franz Joseph became King of Hungary in 1867, he made Buda Castle his primary residence and began a series of renovations and additions to make the now neoclassical palace the rival of any others in Europe.

In 1873, Buda and Pest, previously joined by the Chain Bridge across the Danube, merged to form Budapest. Today, Buda Castle is home to the Budapest History Museum and Hungary’s National Gallery. Its beautiful grounds and spectacular views make for an ideal walking tour, but anyone hoping to see the Holy Right will be disappointed. The bejewelled relic was removed from Buda Castle in 1944 and now resides across the river in St. Stephen’s Basilica.

You’ve gone over your expertly tailored business suit with your lithium batterypowered lint roller GRAMMAR GUY in the executive bathroom. Now, you’re assuming your power stance at the front of the conference room, getting ready to share your big PowerPoint presentation (or — as it’s known in startup circles — your “slide deck”).

But, to get the seven-figure multinational merger deal done, you’re going to need one more key ingredient: power verbs.

We all know that verbs are action words, but some of them are puny, anemic and overused. If you use weak verbs in your presentation, the overseas investors are going to start yawning and looking at their own (probably Swiss) luxury watches, wondering at which Michelin-star restaurant they should dine later tonight.

Let’s take the word “said” as an example. It’s boring, yet we drop it in by default into our everyday communication. Instead, consider more powerful verbs like yelled, demanded, explained or insisted.

“Walk” is another verb that screams “weak sauce.” No one just “walks” anymore, unless you want to walk straight to the unemployment office. Instead, consider using strut, dart, march, mosey or meander. See what I mean? Talk about “walking” like a boss, and you’ll soon be the boss. You can almost smell the rich mahogany of your boss’s desk, can’t you?

Now, let’s take a look at “look.” No one even gives it a second glance. Instead of look, use a more creative, evocative word like gape, examine, notice, glare or stare.

Finally, let’s talk about “talk.” Talking is for career mid-level managers (at best).

Instead, use a stronger verb like spout, reveal, divulge, gab or mumble.

Power verbs will win you friends and influence people, especially executive corporate vice presidents of overseas fiduciary acquisitions. Using power verbs will knock the designer socks off your potential investors.
