Bloor Lane reopens as roundabout construction continues

By Sam Elliott • news@currentzionsville.com Closed since early June, Bloor Lane reopened just in time for the new school year as construction on the roundabout at the intersection of Ford Road is transportation progressing.

“The construction process has been completed on the east side of the roundabout,” said Lance Lantz, Zionsville superintendent of street/stormwater services. “We have made accommodations to reopen Bloor and open the intersection back to a three-way intersection, and the contractor will move to the west side and build that portion of the roundabout.

That allows full access to the intersection for buses and people traveling to school.”

The close proximity to Zionsville Community High School is why a roundabout was chosen over a traffic signal when it came to improving the intersection, which Lantz said had reached an unacceptable level of service.

“Traffic signals can be timed to different traffic loads throughout a day, but when you’re close to a high school you have abnormal traffic patterns that signals cannot anticipate,” he added.

At the Aug. 11 school board meeting, Zionsville Community Schools officials thanked the street department for getting Bloor Lane reopened in time for the new school year.

Tim East said. “There was a performance contract written that this had to be accessible by the start of school, so we’re very thankful that (occurred).”

Once construction on the western portion of the roundabout is complete, crews will move back to the eastern side for finishing touches.

During that phase of the project, Bloor will remain open during the morning, after-school and evening commutes, but will be closed again during school hours. The project is aiming for completion in mid-September, Lantz said.

Teen pageant – Zionsville’s Fall Festival will include a pageant affiliated with the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen and Miss Indiana Organization. Girls must be between the ages of 13 and 17 (seniors not eligible) and live in Boone County. The winner will compete for the title of Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen and will receive scholarship funds. For more information, call 201-5410. Entry deadline is Sept. 11.

The municipalities supporting Whitestown argue that the Zionsville and Perry Township reorganization could set a chaotic precedent.

“A great deal of the information that’s in those amicus briefs — which Whitestown supplied most of that information — is not correct or is misleading,” Papa said. “I hope that when it’s analyzed by … the Supreme Court, they’ll read through both sides and see if they’re real issues or not. We don’t think they are.”

The mayor also said he believes the briefs focused on “crazy hypothetical situations” that he believes are unlikely to ever happen.

Whitestown officials declined to comment on the matter.

Zionsville has filed its response to the petition to the Supreme Court, and now Whitestown has an opportunity to file a reply. After that, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not to address the issue.

“I don’t think there’s any timeline,” said Zionsville Mayor Jeff Papa, who took office the same day as the appeals court ruling.

“They could do that right away or they could take their time. It’s just up to them as to how quickly they decide.”

Nobody knows yet whether or not the Indiana Supreme Court will consider the case regarding Zionsville’s reorganization with Perry Township, reorganization but since asking the state’s highest court to look at the issue Whitestown has gained some support.

The Indiana cities of Batesville and Boonville, plus the towns of Chandler, Danville, Fortville, North Manchester, Pendleton and Plainfield, have submitted amicus briefs to the state Supreme Court, urging the court to review the case and rule in Whitestown’s favor.

Whitestown is claiming that the two entities can’t reorganize because Zionsville doesn’t touch Perry Township, but Zionsville claims it does touch Perry Township following a 2010 reorganization with Eagle Township.

Whitestown petitioned the Supreme Court to review the case after the appeals court ruled in June that Zionsville’s reorganization with Perry Township was valid. A lower court had previously sided with Whitestown.

Art sale to benefit Habitat

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A group of women participating in the 2015 all-female build for Habitat for Humanity in Boone County will raise funds this weekend through a bake and art fundraiser sale.

With a theme of “She Nailed It,” the 12 local women - most from Zionsville - have created original art, jewelry and yard items from hardware and household materials.

To participate in the build each team must raise at least $250 per person. Lee Ann Balta and Leigh Ann Akard pulled the group of women together last year and held a bake sale to supplement other donations. After brainstorming this year they decided to add hardware art.

“That’s been on my mind,” Balta said. “Trash to treasure art.”

The team of ladies had a “fun girls’ night,” according to Akard, to create the items like fairy sticks for outdoor flower pots, necklaces and a piece of art using a pallet as a canvas.

Their fundraising goal is $2,000.

This is the second year this group of women has participated in the Habitat build, and Balta and Akard both found the experience amazing.

“It’s also a great learning experience for the women participating,” Balta said. “It’s so empowering: putting up trim, wiring electrical outlets, knowing the order that things get done in a house.”

The art and bake sale will be held at Akard True Value Hardware in Boone Village from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 and 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 22.

A “Hot Dog! It’s Friday!” lunch will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 21 with hot dogs, chips and a drink available for any donation, which will go toward the Women Build 2015 Akard/Balta team.

Birthday boxes make parties possible for low-income families

The Leo Club, an extension of the Lion’s Club, is creating birthday boxes, complete with cake mix, icing, candles, themed tableware, a book, pajamas and socks. The club will give the boxes to The Caring Center in Lebanon to distribute to kids age 12 to 18.

“As a club of members who are 12 to 18 years old, this project was very special to us as we are able to relate to the people we are helping,” said Terry Klein, president of the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club.

The club received a donation from the Lion’s Club and partnered with Scholastic Books to purchase books for the boxes at a discounted rate. Club members said they hope the books will encourage teens to read. They also raised

Connecting to I-65 in Whitestown has become a little easier, as town and Boone County officials celtransportation ebrated the opening of the extension of Albert S. White Parkway on Aug. 7.

The new bridge and road extension takes drivers over Fishback Creek, allowing drivers on Albert S. White Parkway to connect to I-65 at exit 133. This is expected to relieve traffic from the Amazon Fulfillment Center and send fewer vehicles to Whitestown Parkway, which is at exit 130.

“We are happy to have it done,” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “For the first time ever you can drive over Fishback Creek. We’re happy to have that piece of

infrastructure.”

Boone County officials applied for federal aid to help build the bridge in 2008. Construction took two years, with 80 percent of funds coming from federal aid and 20 percent from local sources. The project also includes a trail along the road.

“I think short term it gives Whitestown residents, in the Walker Farms neighborhood especially, an opportunity for an interchange, instead of driving all the way to exit 130 and Main Street, which is also having issues,” Norton said. “It also opens up more opportunity to reach retail stores. We essentially opened it up to provide ease of access to Whitestown, and ease of access is one of the main things to deal with in economic development.”

Board prepares for new year

By Sam Elliott • news@currentzionsville.com On the eve of students heading back to class, the Zionsville school board prepared for the new school year and took the first steps in its annual budget adopeducation tion process at its Aug. 10 meeting.

Chief operations officer Rebecca Coffman presented the board with a report on the 2015-2016 enrollment numbers and class sizes throughout the district. Since August 2014 through Aug. 10, Zionsville’s high school enrollment has gone from 1,860 students to 1,937 while total enrollment throughout the district has risen from 6,220 to 6,432 students.

Those numbers don’t include students in the district’s preschools, which have also seen expansion.

“Our preschool has expanded to locations at all five elementary schools as well as four universal preschools and the developmental preschool housed at Zionsville West Middle School,” Coffman said.

To complete the first phase of its 2016 budget adoption process, the board approved plans to advertise a pair of notices to taxpayers in a local newspaper as required by state law.

“This is essentially the first of a number of different public proceedings we are required to undertake to eventually get the budget approved by the state,” chief financial officer Mike Shafer said.

The Zionsville Board of School Trustees has its next regular meeting scheduled for 6 p.m.

How I saved my little white car Commentary by Donna Monday The following is true.

I’d have told you about it sooner, but I was afraid you’d report me to the local BMV. In fact, before you read any further, you have to plain talk promise not to do that.

I was backing my little white car out of my driveway. As usual, I was heading off to something important – probably the library or McDonald’s.

Then, “Eek!” I saw a huge black spider crawling up the front of my blouse.

I did what any God-fearing, spider-loathing grandma would do. I opened the car door and tried to knock the spider off. When he refused to budge, I leapt out of the car and REALLY knocked him off.

Which was a great idea except for one thing: I hadn’t secured the car in park.

My car was in reverse. Did I fail to mention that I live on Lafayette Road? My little white car was rolling backward. I was running. It was going faster than I was and picking up speed as it went. The driver’s door was still open.

I was chasing my car onto Lafayette Road when I saw a car coming from the north. By now my car was at about the stripe in the middle of the road. I started waving my hands frantically at the red car coming from the north, yelling, “I can’t stop it!” when

I saw a blue car coming from the south.

Rats!

Now I am waving madly at both the red car and the blue one while my little car continues on its driverless journey across the street. There, on the other side, awaits a ditch.

In my mind I envision my little car crunched in the ditch. I love my car. It’s my home away from home.

Adrenaline kicks in. I run like I’ve never run in my life. I catch up enough to grab the wheel but can’t pull myself inside. I shove my right leg into the car and press the brake pedal. The little car stops just inches shy of the ditch. I slam the gear shift into park.

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that my leg and right arm are all of me that’s in the car. My butt is on the street. I’ve got a pavement view of the left front wheel that no one should EVER have.

From that position I gamely wave at the driver of the blue car. It rolls on – like nothing ever happened.

Give Girl Scouts credit for town’s first historic walking tour

Credit for Zionsville’s first serious development of a historic walking tour goes to the Girl Scout Cadette Troop 732. back in the day In 1982, they spent hours researching the town’s architecture and historic sites.

The project started in the fall of 1981 when the girls first started to learn about the different types of architecture in town. The troop’s interest grew from there. They applied for a grant from the Readers’ Digest Foundation and received $232 early the next year. The seed money was in place.

They continued their research and enlisted the aid of historians and of the community to determine which houses were historic and deserved recognition. Upon completion of the project, the girls were able to distinguish the differences between a Carpenter building and an Italianate or Queen Anne style.

The end result was a brochure offering a short village history, map of the downtown section and location of various architectural styles.

Why can’t chipmunks just walk? CALL LARRY TO SELL YOUR HOME! Commentary by Ward Degler

Chipmunks are everywhere. For years we’ve had one clan living under our front porch and another in the back yard.

This year they have plain talk expanded their territory to include the pond, the barn, the tool shed, all of the garden areas, random places in the lawn and even the driveway.

A note about the driveway: It’s paved but a small bubble created a hole during the freezeand-thaw cycle last winter. The little guys dug a tunnel all the way from the hosta bed to the hole – a good 10 feet. Now they don’t have to worry so much about the neighbor’s cat while crossing the dangerous expanse of asphalt.

So far I haven’t seen much damage to my domain. But I’ve been warned about lost plants, flowers, bulbs and delicate root systems.

I’ve tried to trap them, but I haven’t had much luck. They are highly talented at getting away with the nuts and peanut butter while leaving the trap unsprung. I guess I don’t have a trapper mentality. Maybe I need to start wearing a coonskin cap.

Other than the myriad of holes in the yard

and gardens, I don’t really have a problem with the little guys. And, as my granddaughter frequently observes, “They are so cute!”

One thing does puzzle me. Chipmunks can’t walk. They go everywhere at jet takeoff speed. They’re either sitting on their haunches munching something clutched in their tiny forepaws, or they are a blur streaking from here to there.

I’ve done a little research and find no reason for them not to walk from time to time.

But as long as I’ve watched them, I’ve never seen them do anything but zip.

Maybe it has to do with dogs. Dogs apparently love to chase chipmunks. I know my dog does. He doesn’t catch any, but he gives them a good run.

Maybe at Creation, God warned the chipmunks: “Thou shalt not walk, lest thy neighbor’s dog overtake you.”

Still, Alvin and the Chipmunks’ most popular song is, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Scouts visit the Philmont Scout Ranch

Troop 358 in Zionsville sent 19 boy scouts and six adults to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico this summer. The group was then broken down into three smaller groups called crews that each chose their own itinerary for their trip at Philmont. Each crew covered 70-80 miles during their trip.

Each crew was self-sufficient carrying what they needed for the 10 days on the trail. Each crew also elected a member to act as leader to delegate tasks around camp, lead the discussions at days end and plan for the next day. A lot of green equals pink Cadillac for Zionsville woman

Meet Susan Finley

You’ve probably seen Susan Finley around town. The only owner of a pink cadillac in Zionsville – the symbol of Cover story Mary Kay success – she’s hard to miss.

“It’s a trophy on wheels,” Finley said.

The car has a plaque on the glove compartment that reads: This Cadillac built exclusively for Susan Finley. The eyelashes on the front are her own addition to “Pinky.” Her future husband was with her when she picked up her first pink Cadillac, which also happened to be their third date.

“He proudly rode shotgun,” she said, “and I knew I’d found a secure man.”

Both of her children, Jade, 14, and Tanner, 12, came home in pink Cadillacs. One could say it has become a part of their lives.

“My son said, ‘Mom, riding in this car with you is like riding in a parade every day,’” she said.

But behind the car is a lot of hard work.

To earn a vehicle her sales team makes $204,000 retail in six months, which is roughly $34,000 per month. Finley is very clear that it is representative of the group’s work.

“It takes a whole team to make that happen,” she said. “That’s a lot of lipstick and eyeshadow.”

The job and car also require maintenance – neither the car nor Finley ever go out without being well-groomed.

“You have to have really good traffic manners,” she said. But on the other hand she’s a mobile billboard. “I’ve had people follow me into a parking lot to get my card.”

Finley wasn’t always driven to own “Pinky.”

In fact she initially was against it.

“I was not going to drive a pink car,” she

was initially adamant.

Even the very first time Finley was asked if she’d consider selling Mary Kay products she was offended.

“My first thought was, ‘Seriously? I have a master’s degree in communication disorders and sciences and she wants me to sell lipstick?’” Finley said.

“And then I absolutely fell in love with Mary Kay, the woman,” she said. “She said I could operate by the Golden Rule and not have to claw my way to the top. … And she told me I could call the shots and be in business for myself, but never by myself.”

Finley first started selling the cosmetics for shoe money. For seven years she worked part-time selling cosmetics while working as a speech therapist, then around her 30th birthday she began to rethink her life. She decided

to commit full time as a Mary Kay sales director and left her speech pathology job.

“It was terrifying,” she said. “I just stepped out in faith and never looked back.”

Some women do this as a hobby, while some may choose to work part-time with a few parties a month for extra cash – perhaps for college, vacation, shoes – while working a full-time job. And then a few like Finley move into leadership roles with advancement potential and career cars. As long as her team continues to do well, Finley receives a new career car every two years. The Cadillac is one of the options available. There are currently 6,032 career cars on the road.

For the past 20 years she has been an “advisor, trainer and cheerleader” for her team of roughly 150 women. The flexibility of her job allows her to be involved in the lives of her

children and husband.

Four years ago she realized how priceless this job flexibility is. Her daughter, Jade, was diagnosed with fibroid cancer at the age of nine.

“Because I said ‘yes’ 27 years ago, I had the freedom to take her to doctor appointments, follow ups, etcetera,” Finley said. “That’s why I’m so passionate telling women about the choices Mary Kay can provide.”

Today her daughter is a cancer survivor, “a normal healthy teenager,” said Finley, who is grateful she had the freedom and flexibility to be with her daughter in that time of need.

“I believe every woman needs a backup plan,” she said. “My back burner has moved to the front of the stove.”

She even met her husband through one of her loyal customers. She jokes that he was in her starter kit.

“They could take away the money and the prizes, but not the relationships,” she said.

“The people I have in my life today as a result of Mary Kay is mind blowing.”

We’ve been rather critical of the Republican presidential candidates, and we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the future of the two major parties. It dawns on us that perhaps the Republicans are actually going through a process in which they may be attempting to reinvent the party and platform. Say what you will about Donald Trump, but he’s acknowledging – perhaps not so eloquently at times – that he’s for real change; his lack of eloquence doesn’t bother us. We remember that eloquent politician back in 2008 that won the presidency, and look what it got us.

Change? To be clear, we believe only Trump and, maybe, Carly Fiorina, are getting it; we would never go so far as to claim the Republican Party has a clue. That party has been taken over by liberals, hence the huge financial support of Jeb Bush. But the group that clearly doesn’t get it is the Democratic Party.

Look at that pitiful field. An accomplishmentfree wife of a former president; a socialist; and a former governor no one thinks about. Same failed policies and ideas from the left. So pitiful is the field that there’s actually a movement to get Vice President Joe Biden in it. As pitiful as the Republicans are, at least they can claim their inclusion of a change agent or two. As for the Democrats, it would be the third term of Obama.

••• Carmel is the latest municipality to attempt to get a law on the books that further protects residents from discrimination based on every conceivable criterion. A city council vote on Aug. 17 was to have spun it into law. We get why it’s being done. It’s a sad commentary, though, on how low society has plunged.

No pain: Rite of passage?

Commentary by Terry Anker The aphorisms of life make it easy for us to communicate complex statements in a sentence or two. Mantras, bumper stickers and t-shirts all serve to distill complex ideas down to single, easily digestible thoughts. Often they express truisms so overwhelmingly accurate that they are almost redundant. Yet we employ them to remind us that patterns of behavior can guide our actions into unknown or uncomfortable situations. Song writers and poets use them to effectively in framing thorny questions and challenging the basic suppositions of human interaction. “People are people” said British band Depeche Mode in 1984. Quite right. But they push the obvious to ask if we are so much alike, how is it that “you and I get along so awfully?” How can we be entirely similar and totally different in the same instant?

Life is good – is my personal favorite.

The truism reminds me that as long as we

live, we have all options open to us. We can change. We can learn. We can engage. Or, not. The phrase – encourages us by noting that even a bad day is still filled with opportunity. One might assume that its counterpoint must be death is bad? Perhaps. Or, is it just another step in life. The three little words have stuck with me for decades.

While enjoying a vintage whiskey with a close friend one evening earlier this summer, he shared his chosen expression for good living – “no pain, no pain.” The take on the more common “no pain, no gain” echoed days later. Can we choose to live a life without pain? Can we simply let it pass through us without lament? Or, should we experience the pain as an earned right-of-passage?

I’ve been belting out “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” tunes for a solid hour.

Today especially is monumental because for the first time ever, all four humor of our children were able to clamber up onto that beautiful yellow bus. After 10 years, 10 months, and 15 days, “I’ve got a golden ticket.”

Making this moment even brighter was the dark backdrop of summer. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got an easy puzzle for you. What do you get when summer gets old? Ten fights a day and many tears to behold! Boredom set in as soon as early June came. I know exactly what’s to blame!

Ah-ha. No school structure or routine! La la la la la la la!”

The first two weeks were nice, but evolved into the usual inconsistent schedules, lousy weather and friends out of town while we weren’t. Inevitably, these led to several Veruca Salt incidents, a whole herd of Mike TV impersonations, and one controversial Augustus Glute fiasco which I will not discuss here. I was often so frazzled that I just gave in. They tune in; I check out. That’s poor parenting at its finest.

I don’t know about your kids, but mine fair much better when they have routine.

Camp would solve the problem nicely if it weren’t for those pesky payments they’re so insistent upon. Twenty-five bucks per day per child? Forgetaboutit! So we turned to the next best thing­— grandparents. One set luckily has a pool and a lake cottage, and the other a guilty conscience. “Who can make the sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two?” The Grandparents can!

No camps or grandparents? Cheer up, Charlie. “Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-do. I’ve got another puzzle for you. What do you get when August rolls in? Four kids in school and a mom in heav-en! Welcome back math, homework, reading and tests. Can you remember which is best? Yes, Ma’am! They’re all equally fabulous! La la la la la la la! Oompa, loompa, oompa-di-da. Find a school bus and you will go far. We can live in happiness too.

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia gears up

IU Health North Hospital Carmel Artomobilia has come a long way from its modest beginnings in 2008. event John Leonard, the event director and the founder, said the city of Carmel had a desire to bring people in the Arts & Design District in 2008 so they decided to put on a car show in June.

“It was massively disorganized because we only probably only six or seven weeks to put it together,” Leonard said. “We had 50 cars and I don’t know how many people we had but we didn’t have that many people. But it struck a little bit of a chord. So fast forward seven years, we’ll have 403 cars and probably have 10,000 to 12,000 people that come from (all over the Indianapolis area). We’ll have car exhibitors from as far as Canada, Georgia, Cleveland and Chicago.”

The seventh annual Carmel Artomobilia will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the Carmel Arts & Design District. Leonard, 47, said the purpose is to exhibit cars people might not see every day, promote the car hobby and the Arts & Design District.

Leonard, a life-long car enthusiast, grew up in Brownsburg. He lived in Southern California before moving to Carmel in 2001. He has attended the Monterrey (Calif.) Car Week for 24

There are two groups, Judged Class cars, such as classic, European cars, Muscle cars, GT sports cars, which are positioned on Main Street. The other group is in Car Corral and those cars are positioned on Range Line Road.

“Our car show is a beauty contest,” Leonard said. “We’re celebrating the art and design of the automobile. So we put them all together and try to decide which one is the best looking.”

There will be 12 to 15 artists from the Hoosier Salon painting cars in different locations.

There will be stages on the east and west end of Main Street with entertainment showcasing area talent from noon until 3 p.m.

Carmel musician Blair Clark and his Fun Factor Band will perform on the main stage next to the Indiana Design Center, starting at 1 p.m. The awards ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m.

Coming to the Beef & Boards stage: ‘South Pacific’

There is perhaps no time more appropriate for a repeat viewing of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” performance than the modern American cultural climate, if you ask director Liz Stark.

“It’s a classical piece without being classical,” Stark said. “It’s something I always found odd growing up watching it. ‘Why would people have issue with the race of somebody they might be interested in?’ It still feels very relevant in today’s society.”

“South Pacific” tells the story of two separate but similar romances during World War II. The first tells of an American nurse stationed in the South Pacific who falls in love with a French expatriate but struggles to accept his mixed-race children. The second portrays a romance between a U.S. Lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, both fearful for the consequences of their mixed-race relationship.

For actor Jeff Stockberger (as Luther Billis), it’s all about loyalty between the roles they play.

“When things go kind of crazy, everyone is looking out for each other. Even the ones you wouldn’t expect,” Stockberger said. “We have a short period of time to work together and seem like we really know each other. It’s very much the same idea as what’s happening [in South Pacific.]”

Commentary by Steven Aldrich • news@currentzionsville.com With so many great places to dine in Carmel, it is nearly impossible to decide on the top spots. While many restaurants here are known for their great foods, only a select few have reached elite dessert status. Here are a few of the very best desserts to be had right here in Carmel.

First up is the Brew-Homemade Peanut Butter Pie at Scotty’s Brewhouse. After having tried many of Scotty’s delicious desserts, this one is really tops. The peanut butter pie contains a crunchy graham cracker crust, creamy peanut butter pie filling, whipped cream, and of course, chocolate syrup.

Next up is the Mack Lovin’ at Mackenzie River Pizza. This great dessert consists of warm chocolate chip cookies, served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It is served in a hot skillet and the cookies literally melt in your mouth. This one is pretty big so I recommend getting one for the whole table.

Last but certainly not least, is the Bomboloni served at Biaggi’s in Clay Terrace.

This one consists of cinnamon-sugar Italian donuts, caramel rum sauce, and vanilla bean ice cream. I will admit that I ordered this one to go so I had the donuts without the ice cream … but it was still delicious!

St. George festival back Sept. 19

By Joseph Knoop • news@currentzionsville.com The world of Byzantine heritage, faith and culture is set to draw in attendees at this September’s St. George Fesreligion tival at St. George’s Orthodox Christian Church in Fishers.

St. George Church will bring Byzantine ethnic food, live music, a children’s carnival, a silent auction and more during the festival.

Above all the attractions, the multicultural aspect of the festival and church is what parishioner David Sumner feels stands out the most.

“Our church was established by immigrants from Syria in 1926,” Sumner said. “We have three main purposes for the festival. One is outreach to the community, and introduce the church.”

Sumner added that other purposes for the festival are to introduce the community to Byzantine food, acquaint attendees with the significant architecture, and fundraise for the church’s bills.

Reverend Nabil Hanna, who immigrated to America with his family in the late 1960’s, echoes the importance of these multicultural roots.

Braised Cabbage with Butter Beans Total Time: Approx. 35 mins Original recipe makes 2 servings Ingredients: 1/2 White Cabbage, 1 teaspoon Fennel Seeds, Pinch Sugar, 1 Garlic Clove, 300 ml Vegetable Stock, 1 Can Chopped Tomatoes, 1 heaped tablespoon Tomato Puree, 1 Can Butter Beans (approx 300g), Large Bunch Fresh Parsley, Salt and Pepper, Spray oil for cooking Directions: Slice one half of the cabbage into 4 even wedges. Heat oil in a large deep frying pan on a medium heat. Once hot, place cabbage wedges into the pan and cook for 3 minutes per side.

Sprinkle sides with the fennel seeds and sugar.

Turn the cabbage wedges back over again and add the crushed garlic clove to the pan for one minute.

Add 300 ml of vegetable stock and cook uncovered for 15 minutes before turning over the cabbage slices again. Add the canned tomatoes, tomato puree, butter beans, chopped parsley, a dash of salt and pepper, and stir. Cook for a further 10 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally. Garnish with more fresh parsley and serve!

GREEK SALAD PITA WITH TAPENADE Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 English cucumber (seeded and cut into chunks), 4 Roma tomatoes, seeded and cut into chunks), 4 medium radishes, cut into chunks, 2/3 cup (4 ounces) crumbled feta cheese, 1/4 cup Olive Tapenade spread (Trader’s Joe), 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive

Find balance, support for legs in triangle pose

Namaste! August means back to the books for most of our readers. In honor of the transition back to school, I’m proud yoga to feature a “mathematical” yoga pose. Yoga helps us find a balance of effort and ease and live fully in the present moment. Now let me introduce triangle pose.

A triangle is a basic shape with three sides and three angles. Triangles are one of the most supportive shapes used in building. If you try to push down on a triangle, its points will help it hold its shape. Look at a bridge or even playground equipment and see if you can spy triangles in their structures.

Transform into your own triangle. Stand with your feet wider than your hips, toes point forward. Swivel your feet so that your left foot points straight to the left and your right foot turns left slightly. Stretch your arms straight out to your sides. Now slide your body out over your left leg by reaching your left arm to the left. Reach until you cannot reach anymore, then drop your left hand down onto your shin.

Reach your right arm up toward the sky.

Try triangle pose in front of a mirror, and count the number of triangles your body

makes. Make sure you do triangle to the right as well to stay balanced.

Blooming Life to launch nation’s first teen certification program

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The Torchbearer of Tradition – a 200-hour yoga certification program – will be the first of its kind in the country leading yoga teens down a path to become yoga instructors. The program initiated

by Blooming Life Yoga will be certified through Yoga Alliance, an association representing the yoga community supporting the integrity and teaching of yoga.

A handful of teens and preteens have already registered, and Blooming Life’s owner Lily Kessler hopes the program is filled to its 30-person capacity when classes begin on Jan. 8.

Kessler developed a curriculum for the program to mirror the adult program she also developed.

“A lot of it came from gaps that I saw,” she said.

While Yoga Alliance has broad topics of what should be covered for yoga training, there is no set curriculum.

According to Kessler, the five-month program will address the larger picture of what yoga is, starting with historical studies as a platform leading the students to explore their inner selves.

“We’ll be helping kids explore who they are in the world they live in,” Kessler said.

Her original intent with Blooming Life Yoga was to create a school to ensure the different facets of yoga are being taught.

“Yoga is being lost in translation with its wide boom,” Kessler said. “These are the next generation of yoga teachers.”

Kessler hopes that this will also be a “program in life skills” for these teens with discussions about self-esteem, how to focus, reacting and responding.

When the teens become certified they will have the opportunity to teach at Blooming Life and will be able to help with after-school programs.

Students aged 12 1/2 to 16 may register online through the Blooming Life website to participate in the training.

How to control your cravings Commentary by Cory Black Experiencing strong food cravings that seem near impossible to control? Cravings that are out of control are nutrition typically the result of spiking and subsequently crashing blood sugar levels and will wreck havoc with your diet.

When you regularly have large swings in blood sugar, two things happen. Your body will go into a storage mode turning sugar into more body fat while your energy levels plummet. As well your body increases hunger signals causing you to want to eat more than you really need, sometimes only a short time after your last snack.

Spice up food or drinks with cinnamon.

Research has shown that this spice has an effect on increasing insulin sensitivity when added to diets in the amounts of one to six grams to regulate blood sugar levels.

Visitors to Amber (or Amer) Fort, about seven miles from Jaipur, can see the magnificent palace of a sixteenth-century travel maharaja. They can also see how 21st century India is attempting to keep all its citizens employed.

Maharaja Man Singh I was a Hindu who became an important general under Akbar, the religiously tolerant Mughal leader. In 1592, Singh began building Amber Fort as a fortified palace on a hill outside Amber, the capital of the area he ruled. The complex was expanded by his grandson, Jai Singh I, and became the largest fort in India.

Today’s visitors can ride an elephant up the road to the entrance of the sandstone and marble fort. The designs inside combine Hindu and Mughal elements. The mosaic-covered Ganesh Pol, a three-story entrance to the living quarters of the Maharaja and his harem, honors Ganesa, the elephant-headed god of new beginnings. The interior walls of the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) are covered with convex mirrors designed to shimmer in candlelight. An important temple honors Shila Devi, a Hindu goddess.
