A routine traffic stop at 1 a.m. Aug. 10 turned into a significant bust for the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Dept.

Crime Pachae Moore, 25, was clocked going 81 miles per hour on I-65 and pulled off onto Whitestown Parkway, where she stopped at the TA Truck Stop. She was stopped for speeding and improper lane change.

Tanya Sumner, director of communications for the Town of Whitestown, said the WMPD officers, Blayne Root, Ryan Batts and Jacob King, discovered Moore and Moore passenger Tanieka Toliver, 33, were fugitives with more than $3,500 worth of stolen merchandise in their possession.

There was a false license plate on the vehicle, and Moore gave the officers a false name and date of birth.

Toliver Both had felony warrants out for their arrest. The driver had two felony warrants in Hamilton County and two more felony warrants in Marion County. Toliver had one felony warrant for a parole violation.

Sumner said the stolen merchandise included top-tier designer clothing, shoes and sunglasses. Included were brands such as Gucci, Versace, Nike and Victoria’s Secret.

There were approximately 30 bags of evidence collected, which included more than 300 individual items.

“In addition to the stolen merchandise, the driver also had a half-dozen fake IDs in her possession, all doctored with her picture on them,” Sumner said. “Those fake drivers’ licenses were used to open fraudulent checking accounts and in-store credit accounts.

It appears the women had become too well known at stores in and around the Indianapolis area, so they drove to the Chicago area for a shopping spree.”

The women were on their way back to Indianapolis when they were stopped, Sumner said.

The Zionsville School Board of trustees met for its monthly meeting Aug. 8 to discuss enrollment, budgets and more.

What happened: Zionsville schools superintendent Dr. Scott Robison gave his monthly report highlighting several items, including the completion of the new teacher academy, new student enrollment and various maintenance and upkeep items around various schools campuses.

What it means: The new teacher academy welcomed 58 new teachers, counselors and specialists to school staff. As of Aug. 8, approximately 7,000 students have enrolled across the district including preschool, with the seventh grade class being the largest at 569 students. Enrollment surpassed ZCS estimates.

What’s next: The 2017 school year officially began on Aug. 9.

What happened: A public hearing was held regarding the Zionsville schools’ annual teacher evaluation process.

What it means: Public school systems are required to annually file a teacher evaluation process with the Indiana State Board of Education for all certified employees, including the superintendent, principals, teachers, etc.

The evaluation process is used to measure teachers’ performance. Teachers receive oral and written feedback based on their evaluation results.

What’s next: The Zionsville Teacher Evaluation Process will be utilized in the upcoming 2016-17 school year.

What happened: Zionsville schools’ chief financial officer Mike Shafer presented the first phase of 2017 budget adoption.

What it means: As required by law, the school budget must be available to the public. The school board must approve the advertisement of the budget before it can become available to the public. In addition to the budget, the bus replacement fund plan and capital projects fund will also be available to the public.

What’s next: The board approved the advertisement of the 2017 budget.

Not meaning what you say Commentary by Ward Degler You probably never noticed, but we say a lot of things that don’t really mean what they imply. For example, I was plain talk “under the weather” last week, which meant I had a case of the summer grumpies complete with chills and fever.

The actual meaning goes back to our seafaring days when sailing ships found themselves slogging through storms. The watch officer maintained high alert during such times because savage winds at sea could wreak havoc on a sailing vessel.

To “beat the tar out of” something doesn’t really refer to corporal punishment. Sheep farmers sometimes nick a sheep while shearing, and dab the cut with a bit of tar to help it heal. Later, they have to pound on the hardened tar to break it loose from the wool.

There are many ways “to skin a cat,” we’re told. I mentioned that to my five-year-old daughter once, and later found her snuggled in bed with her cat under the covers to keep me from skinning it.

The term actually refers to skinning a catfish, which arguably has the toughest hide on anything that swims. While I have skinned my

fair share of catfish, I don’t recall anyone offering alternative methods for doing it.

Anyone who “starts from scratch” probably works in a bakery, since “from scratch” pastries are what we think of when we hear the phrase.

The term actually had its origin in track and field. In the old days, foot-race officials would handicap a race by scratching a line in the ground further back as a start point for faster runners.

“At the drop of a hat” always meant someone was eager for a fight. Close enough. In the old west, formal duels started when someone dropped a hat. Hopalong Cassidy never did it that way. He just blazed away until the bad guys hightailed it out of town. And “hightailing it” refers to the way frightened deer raise their tails when running away.

And any sailor who gets soaked to the skin riding out a storm will probably wind up “under the weather.”

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com During World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, the USO was best known for its highly visible role in entertaining the troops.

Comedian Bob Hope led 57 entertaincover story ment tours for the USO between 1941 and 1991. The USO, which stands for United Service Organizations, faces a tougher challenge these days letting people know what it is and how it serves others.

“The mission statement is to strengthen America’s military by keeping them connected to family, home, country during their Ridings service to the nation,” said Charles Ridings, USO of Indiana executive director and a Zionsville resident.

The USO of Indiana (called USO of Indianapolis until 2007) was the sixth charter formed and is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2016.

Carmel resident Bob Legacy, a former USO Legacy of Indiana board member who is now on the emeritus council, said many people don’t know it’s not a government organization but is a civilian group, predominantly made up of volunteers. It was formed in February 1941 prior to the United States entering World War II. “There were troops wandering around all over towns with nothing to do, nowhere to go and very little money and a tremendous amount of testosterone, so President (Franklin) Roosevelt recognized there was a need for some organization

to serve the military,” Legacy said. “He asked six organizations to come together to form (the USO). Its mission has morphed through the years, depending on the United States being in and out of war and peace time.”

Celebrities still travel all over to entertain troops, but that’s just about 20 percent of what the organization does, Legacy said.

“We’re a lot more than Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and Robin Williams,” said Ridings, referring to the late comedian who made six USO tours to Iraq. “We’ve got a lot of programs that are designed to strengthen the military and their families.

“A lot of organizations purport to take care of the military and their families, but they don’t do the full service that USO does around the world.”

There are two full-time hospitality centers, one at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh and the other at the Indianapolis International Airport. There are satellite centers in Fort Wayne, Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in North Vernon and Fort Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence Township in Indianapolis.

The hospitality center at Camp Atterbury is open 365 days a year. USO of Indiana has more than 500 volunteers.

“It’s a tremendous volunteer experience,” Ridings said. “It’s a chance to get to know many of the men and women serving our country.”

Legacy, whose son is in the Air Force Reserves, said volunteers are usually former military members, have children in the military or have a calling to serve military members.

Ridings, a retired Naval officer who has been the executive director for more than two years, said military members can record reading a book so when they are deployed, the video will be mailed to their family.

“The studios are set up like a child’s bedroom,” Legacy said.

“We tell them, ‘Just pretend you are sitting at home with your kids reading the book.’ They can do that at any USO center around the world.”

Ridings said there is an expenses-paid military couples reunion weekend program with St. Mary’s-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute.

“It’s a place where they can reconnect,” Ridings said. “It’s ideally geared toward post-deployment, but we can take any military couples there, anytime. There is music. There are cool methods of connections with art and poetry.”

USO of Indiana also has a care package program. Ridings said his group sends 800 to 1,000 packages a year to Indiana units.

Families can come in and record video messages from the home front. Along with cookouts and concerts, there are holiday celebrations at Camp Atterbury for troops waiting to be deployed.

USO gala set for Sept. 17 The USO of Indiana Five Star Gala is set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. Former Sen. Richard Lugar will be honored. Tickets are $150, $100 with military discount. There also will be a silent auction. Michael Hanlon, USO of Indiana director of development and a Zionsville resident, is in charge of the gala.

Hanlon said the attendance goal is 300, and he hopes to raise more than $100,000 through the event. Legacy said the national Hanlon USO doesn’t provide any funding, “So it’s critical that we’re always working with companies and benefactors to try to fundraise.” For more, visit us.uso.org/indiana/.

Good luck, Tania When Tania Castroverde Moskalenko was whispered to be the new chief executive officer of the Center for the Performing Arts nearly five years ago, we were excited about the future of the campus. Her proven leadership and fiscal expertise, as well as prowess with respect to bookings and staff and funding development in suburban Memphis, were exactly what the Center required.

Now that she is headed to Roosevelt University in a similar position at the fabled Chicago Auditorium, we believe the Center is in a terrific position to be taken farther down the trails she blazed.

Chicago’s gain is our loss, certainly, but we’re grateful for her accomplishments, and we know the auditorium is in excellent hands.

Whoever is tapped to replace Tania will have some rather large boots to fill. Hers has been a job very well done, and although we are sorry to see her go, we’re confident interim CEO Jeff McDermott and the search committee will find a candidate to carry on what she launched.

If Mozart is on to something, can we talk too much? Can we brow-beat our fellow humans into disagreement simply by demanding their compliance with too great a fervor? And in the noisy world of nearly universal Internet access and social media, do we ensure that the messages carried are increasingly shrill? Since the babbling brood of “experts” is unlikely to shut up, is it best simply to tune out?

One of the things my family teases me about, besides my love of well-done steak, is my almost freakish commithumor ment to eight hours of sleep.

I frequently pass on oncein-a-lifetime experiences in favor of crawling into bed at 9 p.m. If that’s not nerdy enough, I also occasionally put on my math teacher hat and calculate my probability of getting a good night’s sleep. My POGNS. I’ve found that knowing ahead of time my chances of sleeping eliminates anxiety and ensures remedial measures (PM pills or AM coffee) are in place. Here are a few of the factors that come into play: Kids/pets: In our house, the likelihood of a child or an animal coming into our bedroom is high. Nightmares, storms, the cat’s strange desire to lick my hair . . . you name it. So my chances of a restful eight hours based purely on the kid/pet factor is 6/7.

Husband: Doo radiates heats like a, well, a radiator. And he snores. Usually a pillow wall will do the trick, but sometimes there is no protection. POGNS: 4/5.

Me: Illness, anxiety, hunger and my mad hearing skills keep me awake about three times a month. POGNS: 9/10.

Lady parts: On certain days, fluctuating hormones can result in the sleep quality of a heroin addict in detox. POGNS: 5/6 Miscellaneous: Raccoons in the attic, teenagers’ kitchen rummagings, Tooth Fairy shenanigans . . . I never know what fun nocturnal surprises lie in wait. POGNS: 72/73. (I know this seems like a random fraction, but trust me on this. I’m a math teacher!)

Let’s say we only have decaf and I’m wondering if I need to make a grocery run at 8:30 p.m. I calculate the POGNS for all applicable categories and determine that the likelihood of my getting a good night’s sleep is 67.6 percent. Not bad enough for a Benadryl, but not good enough to risk a caffeine-free morning. To Meijer I go. Potential disaster averted. See? So yes, I may be nerdy and prefer charred beef, but at least I’m using my powers for good. Peace out.

The many uses for floss Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I have steadfastly accepted as fact anything preceded by the words “They say….” They say breakfast is the humor most important meal of the day; they say you should drink seven glasses of water daily; they say you should wait 30 minutes after eating to go swimming.

Luckily, all of these directives have proven false. But I am most delighted by this latest debunking: No proof that daily flossing prevents cavities and gum disease.

Flossing has never been very popular. Here are some common excuses people give for not flossing.

I am not coordinated enough: I get that.

When I first started flossing, I made the mistake of doing it while looking in the mirror. I was punching myself in the nose three or four times a week.

I am pregnant: This is a feeble excuse, especially since 35 percent of the people saying it were men.

I have perfect teeth, no food ever gets stuck in my teeth, my teeth are amazing: Well, he’s not my choice for the next president, but I do think this guy has a good set of choppers.

Consumers spend two billion dollars a year on dental floss, about a half-million yards of the stuff, or enough to go around the earth 20 times. But remember that a lot of that halfmillion yards was used as emergency shoelaces, fishing line and picture hangers.

There’s actually a blog called 1,001 ways to use dental floss. It includes lots of clever ideas, but strangling someone or using it for a prison break do not speak to my personal needs.

Dental floss was invented by Levi Spear Parmly in the early 1800s. His wife thought his idea needed some tweaking. “Look, Levi, instead of your invention, how about making tiny, pointy wooden sticks that you can pick your teeth with? You could call them Spear Picks. Clever, huh?”

“Better let me do the thinking, dear. And that other idea of yours, making pants out of denim and calling them Levi’s? I don’t think that will fly, either.”

LIDS to host Mad Hatter 5K

By Megan Melton • news@currentzionsville.com LIDS Sports Group will host the Mad Hatter 5K run Aug. 27 at its new headquarters in Zionsville.

“The LIDS Foundation is trying to bring funds and money to orgarace nizations that promote healthy lifestyles,” said Bailee Reynolds, a spokesperson for the event.

Online registration for the event ends Aug. 24, but participants may also sign up the morning of the run. Registration is limited to 500 people. Those who can’t be at the event can sign up for a virtual run.

The event starts at 8 a.m. and will include special sales throughout the morning.

“There will be a sample sale before, during and after the race,” Reynolds said.

Every participant will receive a shirt, a participation medal and a scenic run or walk through Zionsville. The first 150 people to register will receive a free LIDS hat. Those who register for the virtual run will receive LIDS swag, as well.

Participants are encouraged to wear a favorite hat to the race, and winners will receive LIDS gift cards.

The 5K is the first race the LIDS Sports Group has organized in Zionsville since moving to its new building in Creekside Corporate Park last year.

“There was a company-wide contest for the name,” Reynolds said, “and (the name suggestion) had to be hat-themed.”

Flamme Burger set to open mid-September in Whitestown

The idea to expand Flamme Burger originated with soccer.

Founder Henri Najem’s new biz daughter, a travel soccer player, often headed to Whitestown to play. That is what sparked his curiosity.

“Watching all the development and growth in that area, I thought there may be an opportunity,” Najem said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to expand, and I like the area with the growth and the customer base. I think Flamme Burger will do very well there.”

The Whitestown burger joint has plans to open mid-September, nearly one year after it debuted in Fishers.

After Najem and his wife, Shelly, sold Bella Vita, a restaurant they owned for 17 years, Najem decided he wanted to move on to something more casual, but still fresh.

“I started working on this concept, and to be different in the burger industry isn’t easy,” he said. “I began experimenting with woodfired products. From there, I started working with custom blends of brisket, short rib and sirloin. We grind fresh daily, mix it up and patty the burgers here on site. That was really the key. I didn’t want to buy somebody else’s

Najem lives in Fishers with his family, and he is working to meet final requirements with the Town of Whitestown before he can open his second Flamme Burger.

“I looked at Carmel and other locations, and some areas are really saturated,” he said.

“There’s Bub’s in Zionsville, but there’s not a whole lot of wood-fired restaurants similar to mine. I think with the growth of Whitestown, that’s what attracted us to the area.”

Tiffany to perform at Warehouse

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Some may only recognize Tiffany as a pop star from the ’80s, but the now 44-year-old singer is going on a North American tour that stops in Carmel on Aug. 25. music The tour will showcase Tiffany’s new album, “A Million Miles,” but the singer will perform some favorites from the past, as well.

“I’m really excited about the Tiffany tour. We are just in production now with working on the music, and it’s really going to be an intimate evening,” Tiffany said.

“It’s an acoustic evening, but we’ve got some tricks up our sleeve. It’s celebrating 28 years of music, and some songs are from the past, of course the hits, and a lot of my fans’ favorites.”

Tiffany will stop in Carmel at 8 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Warehouse, 254 First Ave., Carmel. VIP tickets are $85, and general admission tickets are $55 to $65 dollars.

“I’ve done a lot of different types of styles of music over the years. As a songwriter, I’ve done things and I’ve worked with producers that I’m very lucky to have (had) the opportunity to work with it,” she said. “I’ve kept it all pop and adult contemporary, but (the songs have) had their rock flair, or more dance, and really putting this show together, I thought it would be a challenge.

But it’s been really awesome to get into the studio and rework some of the songs.”

Tiffany said much of the tour is centered on intimacy, purposefully choosing smaller venues for her performances. The Warehouse fits her small venue theme, but Tiffany has family in Indiana, as well, some of which will attend the show.

“Having a smaller venue lends itself to looking in people’s eyes and having an evening together,” she said. “You lose that connection a little bit sometimes. It’s a smaller room; it’s just amazing.

You can see people and what they’re thinking, and sometimes, that’s kind of scary. It’s like being in someone’s living room.”

Kathryn Dean will open the show for Tiffany.

‘Jazz’ to celebrate progress

Jazz in the Hall will be a potluck event, with families who attend encouraged to bring dishes. Families do not have to be members of St. Alphonsus to attend.

“The jazz band will be performing, and in between, we will have a series of presentations by a couple different individuals from the (St. Alphonsus) Haiti Committee and also a presentation by Father Ronald from St. Anthony,” said Stephen Boehm, a member of the St. Alphonsus Haiti Committee.

The ZCHS Jazz Band will perform three or four sets, with each set being 15 to 20 minutes long.

“It takes time to come up with that money, especially when you’re doing all these other things with teachers’ salaries and water filtration and raising money for other mission trips down there,” Boehm said.

BTI films to debut Aug. 27

By Desiree Williams news@currentinwestfield..com The Ballet Theatre of Indiana hosted its first benefit last year. For the benefit this year, there will be one new addition: dance films. The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Evan Lurie Gallery in Carmel, 30 W. Main St. Stirling and Sabrina Matheson, co-artistic directors of BTI, were searching for ways to spread the word about their relatively young company, and they hoped to do so through online videos. They discussed combining dance and cinematography, which was the starting point for the film event. When the second season ended early, there was extra rehearsal time allotted for these video projects. “(The films) will not look like the stage version,” Stirling said. “Everything was made specifically for the videos we shot.”

The benefit will feature four videos. There will be a short introduction to the company that was shot in various locations around the city. A music video for local singer Katie Pederson’s new album and a comical rendition of a staged audition also will be shown. Stirling said they are planning to shoot a film version of a ballet based on Edgar Allen Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado.”

“It’s fun to get a chance to see these new art projects and the sort of new branch of what we do as a company before anyone else in an exciting atmosphere,” Stirling said.

Teriyaki Madness to open Aug. 25

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Trevor Sweeney has spent most of his career as a boat pilot, including 11 years working as a riverboat captain at Belterra Casino in Switzerland County in restaurants Indiana.

Sweeney, a 50-yearold Navy veteran and Merchant Marine, also worked as a boat pilot for steel mills. However, he was ready for a career change and he and his wife, Janna, decided to buy a Teriyaki Madness franchise. Their fast-casual Asian grill franchise is scheduled to open Aug. 25 at 12525 Old Meridian St., Suite 140, Carmel.

It’s the second in the Indianapolis area, after another franchise owner opened one at Keystone at the Crossing in January.

“This is kind of a dream of his (to open a restaurant),” Janna said. “I was waiting until my other youngest child graduated high school (in 2015). That’s when we started the process.”

The couple, who have an 8-year-old son, John, are living in a Carmel apartment while waiting to sell their house in Vevay, Ind. “We met a franchise consultant and figured out our strengths and weaknesses, and this

was one of the options,” Sweeney said. “The food is excellent. What I like about Teriyaki Madness is it’s an alternative to so many pizza places, burger places and sub shops. It’s a good healthy alternative to all those.”

“The food is not sitting around waiting,” Sweeney said. “It’s cooked on the spot. We’re shooting for seven to eight minutes. When we get slammed it’s going to be a little more time.

It’s a very simple menu board.”

Janna, who was a dental hygienist for 26 years, is helping with the training and supervising aspects of the business.

Huber to lead Brazil Concert Band

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Matthew Huber literally grew up musically with the Brazil Concert Band.

Huber, 63, was only 15 when music he joined the band in 1968 as a last-chair trombone player. But over time and with experience, he grew into a larger leadership role within the group: Huber has been the director/conductor of the band for the past 35 years.

He was only 29 when took over the baton, “a young guy leading older people, and now it’s the other way around,” Huber said.

On Aug. 20, Huber will lead the Brazil Concert Band Huber in a 45-minute concert at 11 a.m. at The Carmel Celebration of Bands at the Palladium.

“It’s going to be our first time to play there.

It’s going to be quite a treat,” Huber said.

The band will perform music by Indiana’s March King, Fred Jewell, to celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial.

“We’ll also do marches by a man who was a member of my band 100 years ago, and relative of mine, John Gus Davis,” said Huber, a retired teacher who still substitutes when he’s needed.

John Gus Davis’ father, John Brock Davis, was the band’s founder, and his son, Johnnie “Scat” Davis, was a singer, actor and trumpeter who appeared in several movies.

The band will perform two other marches at “The Brazil Special” and “JCTB on Parade.”

“I wrote a section for Indiana State when Larry Bird put ISU on the map, so we have ‘March On Sycamores’ in this,” he said.

Huber said one of the band’s first performances was at one of the Abraham LincolnStephen Douglas debates in 1858, the year the band was founded.

There are approximately 70 members in the band. His son, John Philip Huber, 30, plays euphonium in the Brazil Concert Band as well as in the Indiana Wind Symphony.

“We named him for John Philip Sousa, hoping he would turn out to be a musician,” Huber said.

John Philip will play with Indiana Wind Symphony’s two performances at the Celebration of the Bands, as will Alice Greenburg, a clarinetist who is also in both groups.

Blueprint for Improvement: 1990s kitchen update Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background info: The owners of this ’90s home, in the River Ridge subdivision in Fishers, were looking to update their kitchen. The kitchen was original to the home and wasn’t fulfilling their needs.

The space wasn’t giving them a place to gather as a family. It wasn’t functional for entertaining.

Before problems: The kitchen was original to the home, and therefore, aesthetically, it needed an update!

Every inch of the existing cabinet and counter top space was being utilized. This called for some new, functional, organizational solutions.

After

After solutions: The goal was to create more space and function in this kitchen, while keeping this family’s needs in mind.

1. A closet in the adjacent family room was removed to allow for more functional space planning. The refrigerator and oven moved to the former closet space, which allowed for other changes.

2. The move of the larger appliances allowed for new counter space near the range. This gave the family ample prep room they were looking for.

3. To create needed storage, cabinets and built-in shelving were added to the wall housing the larger appliances. The addition of this wall resulted in saving space and providing convenient access.

4. The island in the kitchen was rotated in order to give the homeowners pull-up seating. They were able to add counter stools to have a quick breakfast or more casual meals as a family.

The language of Jesus in Ma’loula Commentary by Don Knebel Until a few years ago, visitors to an ancient mountainside village in southwestern Syria could hear the words of Jesus in his own language. Today, those words have travel been temporarily silenced.

Ma’loula (or Maaloula) was founded in about 90 A.D. in the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, 40 miles northeast of Damascus.

Christianity came early to Ma’loula, which has maintained a Christian majority for at least 1,600 years. With a population never exceeding a few thousand, Ma’loula has been home to 40 churches.

The Mar Sarkis Church, one of the oldest in the world, features a unique altar reminiscent of pagan altars, with raised edges for catching sacrificial blood. The adjoining Mar Sarkis monastery honors St. Sergius, a Roman soldier executed for following Jesus. Mar Thecla, another ancient monastery, claims the remains of St. Thecla, said to have been a follower of the apostle Paul.

Because of its geographic isolation, Ma’loula’s residents still speak Western Ara-

maic, the ancient language Jesus spoke. For centuries, priests of the Mar Sarkis Church have recited the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic for visitors from around the world.

In 2010, Ma’loula residents proudly said their motto was, “Everyone is Christian and everyone is Muslim.” Christian and Muslim women dressed the same, and both sought healing in Mar Thecla.

Tragically, in 2013 and early 2014, extremist groups, including Al-Qaeda, took over Ma’loula and severely damaged Mar Sarkis and Mar Thecla and other monasteries and churches and looted their historic contents. They demolished a statue of Mary overlooking the city. In April 2014, Syrian government forces, assisted

by Hezbollah, recaptured Ma’loula and initiated efforts to restore the damaged churches and monasteries and recover the looted items. A new statue of Mary again overlooks Ma’loula.
