Zionsville police are searching for an armed robber who stole a Riley Kids donation jar from the Speedway at 1390 W. Oak St. after the clerk refused to open the cash register. crime According to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana, the suspect walked into the gas station and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. The clerk said he couldn’t open the cash drawer without a purchase, but the suspect kept demanding cash.

The clerk told police that the suspect – described by Crime Stoppers only as a black male – grabbed the Riley Kids donation jar from the counter and ran out of the store heading east, possibly to a car. A silver car with a sunroof was seen circling the area prior to the robbery, according to Crime Stoppers.

Parks board gets new member

What happened: The council appointed Steve Bullington to the Zionsville Parks Board.

What it means: Bullington, who has previously served on the board, will replace Manda Clevenger, who is moving out of town near the end of the month.

What’s next: Bullington is expected to join the board for its Sept. 13 meeting.

What happened: The council approved an ordinance that changes less than 200 feet of Sixth Street from a one-way to a two-way road.

What it means: Sixth Street had been designated a one-way street from Poplar Street to Ash Street. The ordinance changes the one-way designation to Locust Street to Ash Street, which allows drivers traveling west on Locust Street to go south and make a near-immediate turn to continue heading west on Poplar Street. ZPD received many complaints of people driving the wrong way on Sixth Street on this stretch.

What’s next: The ordinance is in effect.

What happened: The council approved an ordinance to reflect stop signs in the Hidden Pines subdivision.

What it means: The stop signs have been in place as the neighborhood has been built, but the developer is transferring ownership of the streets to the town. The ordinance allows the town to officially recognize and codify the stop conditions.

In Indiana, there will be a partial eclipse with 91 percent totality, beginning at approximately 2:25 p.m. and lasting approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes.

A total eclipse will be viewable to the select 12.2 million Americans living within the path of totality, a 70-mile band stretching across 14 states from Oregon to South Carolina.

The moon will pass between the earth and the sun on a west-to-east trajectory and completely eclipse the sun, first in Lincoln Beach, Ore. at 1:16 p.m. EST, and last in Charleston, S.C. at 2:48 p.m. EST. The moon moves in an orbit around the Earth, which itself orbits the sun. Even though the sun is many times bigger than the moon, because of the vast difference between where they are located, they appear to be approximately the same size when viewed from Earth. When the moon’s trajectory overlaps, the sun’s position in relation to a given point on Earth, there is

either a partial or total eclipse.

Certain precautions need to be taken when viewing an eclipse. In general, staring at the sun’s surface for too long can cause damage to the eye, but during an eclipse, the surrounding darkness sways the natural tendency to divert one’s gaze, thereby allowing even more of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation to impact the retina.

To view the eclipse safely, people need special eclipse glasses. Some libraries, science and astronomy clubs and historical societies are offering the free glasses. Alternatively, they may be purchased online, but be careful to only get products that comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.

Less than a year ago, Carmel officials gathered to celebrate the completion of a trail along infrastructure 106th Street that stretches from Fishers on the east to Zionsville on the west, minus a missing link through Home Place, which is not within city limits.

But now, some of that path has been torn up as construction crews work to install a 3.5-mile, 20-inch sewer line along 106th Street from Ditch Road west to handle the population growth in west Carmel and east Zionsville. The upgrade is a Clay Township Regional Waste District project, and it will pay to replace all of the trail it destroys, approximately 1,400 feet.

Wes Merkle, CTRWD engineering manager, said crews are using directional drilling to install about a third of the project, a method that involves tunneling underground and pulling the pipe through. Open cut installation, or digging a trench along the project area, is the more traditional installation method.

directional drilling,” Merkle said.

The $5.8 million project began in late winter and is expected to wrap up by the end of August, although some work is expected to go beyond that near Ditch Road. Approximately 1.5 percent of the total project cost will go toward repairing pathways, Merkle said.

The new pipes are a forced main line that will send wastewater from lift stations in west Carmel to the treatment plant on Mayflower Park Drive in Zionsville.

“There’s a whole lot of crews working right now,” Merkle said. “We just ask that folks driving through be patient with us as we get through the remaining pipe installation and drive carefully.”

Road closures are not expected, although some lanes may be shut down.

Construction is under way for a roundabout at the intersection of Ford and Mulberry roads. The intersection is expected to remain open throughout most of the project, but some temporary closures or lane restrictions could be in place. The roundabout is expected to be complete this month.

CARMEL The intersection of Towne Road and 116th Street is closed for the construction of a two-lane roundabout. It is expected to reopen on or after Sept. 13.

Spring Mill Road is closed south of the Main Street roundabout to 111th Street except for local traffic. Motorists are encouraged to use Illinois Street as a detour. The closure is expected to last until fall.

Creekfest returns Aug. 19

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Town of Zionsville is partnering with the Boone County Solid Waste Management District to hold Creektown news fest, the annual celebration of Eagle Creek. The event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19 at Elm Street Green, 165 Elm St. “The first event was in 2013. Zionsville resident Todd Settle came to us and asked if the town could facilitate a cleanup at Eagle Creek because he had identified quite a bit of trash. We got around 41 volunteers and were able to remove over 2,600 pounds of trash from Eagle Creek,” said Gavin Merriman, assistant superintendent of the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept.

After the first successful cleanup effort, organizers created a celebration to coincide with the event.

“We had this fortunate problem with Eagle Creek. It’s not highly urbanized. It’s not highly impacted by trash, but we wanted to have this be an annual event to not only clean up but to add this larger celebration of Eagle Creek,” Merriman said.

fly-fishing and kayak demonstrations, rain barrel painting and live music.

“We’re trying to build in as many all-ages activities as we can,” Merriman said.

There also will be a staggered cleanup of Eagle Creek that day beginning at 9 a.m.

“The cleanup is going on the same time as Creekfest, but we want to get those volunteers going before Creekfest starts and then to have enough time to come back and enjoy it,” Merriman said.

There is no cost to attend Creekfest.

Parking is limited, so walking, biking and carpooling are encouraged. Volunteers interested in participating in the Eagle Creek cleanup effort must register in advance.

ZCHS grad earns Eagle Scout

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Community High School 2017 graduate Aidan Mais recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, achievement the highest honor in Boy Scouts.

To receive the designation, a Scout must complete a service project and provide leadership to others. Mais, 18, chose his project because he wanted to be a part of something others could enjoy long after it was completed.

“My stepdad is a park ranger down at Yellowwood State Forest in Nashville (Ind.).

When I was down there one weekend I noticed the trail was beautifully maintained, but the signs were in disrepair,” he said.

“I didn’t think it was right that one of the trails at this park was in such disrepair, so I took it on as a project.”

Mais, a member of Troop 69, met with officials from the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources to coordinate the project.

Mais contacted the Indiana Forestry Educational Foundation, which decided his project fell under its impact statement. The organization funded the project in full, a

total of approximately $400.

Mais recruited former Scouts, friends and family members to help construct the new signs.

“We did it more in spurts and construction here at my house. Once the construction was done we took a weekend and went camping down there,” he said.

The project was completed May 26 with a total of 184 hours of work.

“I’m personally over the moon,” Mais said.

“I thought that I had put it off too long. I was part of the way through my senior year, but the fact that I finished strong means a lot to me.”

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Incorporating a bit of art into her work is something that distinguishes Julia Fish Thompson from handwriting other calligraphers.

She’ll share those techniques during a two-day class at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library.

Thompson’s two-session lesson on uncial, a form of calligraphy that became popular in the third and fourth centuries, is Aug. 18 and 25 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Uncial, the Italian word for inch, is distinguished by having only one case of lettering and rounded strokes.

“The class is totally geared for beginners, like complete beginners,” Thompson said.

Lessons will begin with the basics of learning to use the pen, the order of stroke and construction of letters.

The free event is funded by the library, and participants will receive calligraphy markers and a diagram of the letters.

Although Thompson has taught nine different types, or hands, of calligraphy at the library, this is the first uncial class she has

led there. She said many of her students return to each class or become members of the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana.

Thompson is president of the guild, which was established to promote studying and learning letterform.

Thompson wants to add an art aspect to the class during the second day.

The class is for adults, but Thompson offers private lessons to those as young as pre-teens. Thompson first tried calligraphy as a teenager and enjoys that it continually changes.

“I feel like there’s always a new challenge,” she said. “There’s always something new to try. I always say yes, and then figure it out.”

Expert urges webs of support

That was the question education youth advocate Derek Peterson explored as he spoke to more than 1,500 community members over two sessions Aug. 3 after meeting with educators, Zionsville Community Schools staff and selected students.

Peterson said creating a web of support for youth is a big factor, illustrating the concept by asking volunteers to act as anchors connected by crisscrossed strings to hold a balloon.

Adult anchors serve as support for each child whether they are teachers, family members, family friends, coaches or mentors. Ideally, each child needs at least five caring adults in his or her life, Peterson said. The anchors create a web of protective factors (shown with string), whether concrete like food and a home or conceptual like courage and integrity. The balloon, or youth, won’t fall into the cracks of the web, according to Peterson, if they have strong support or if they “fill their balloon.”

“If you build the web of support, the safety net takes care of itself,” Peterson said.

Peterson said youth with strong webs become more resilient to social challenges and overcome adversity and help others.

they’re more connected to other people,” Peterson said. “Our data says every kid needs a personal village.”

He encouraged parents to see kids in a full spectrum of color versus the black and white of a good kid or bad kid.

“Accentuate the positive and that affects the whole color spectrum,” he said as a way to interact with teens. “Web up, because you will be more resilient if you have a web of support.”

Thoughts on winter weather Commentary by Ward Degler “The coldest winter I ever remember was the summer of 1948 in Minnesota.” Lars Tarnquist rocked back in plain talk his chair and narrowed his eyes in reflection. He had been living in Florida since he retired several years earlier and had grown weary of the local chaps complaining about the hot weather.

“We moved our regular Memorial Day picnic out onto the lake that year so the kids could go ice fishing,” he said. “Fourth of July was OK except for the little Swenson girl who got frostbite on her fingers. Her folks warned her not to take her mittens off to light her sparklers. ‘Course, kids never listen.”

Lars wasn’t all wrong, of course. Standard equipment for picnics in Minnesota include a heavy jacket and something to keep your ears warm. When the wind comes out of the north, it doesn’t matter much what the season is.

“There’s only 19 trees between Northfield and the Arctic Circle,” Lars observed. “Not near enough to keep frost from moving in.”

I woke up last week wondering if I hadn’t

been transported back there during the night. After three weeks of temperatures near 90, the mercury went into freefall, bottoming out in the mid-50s. It struggled to reach 70 by late afternoon. I switched off the air conditioning, cranked up the furnace and put on a sweater.

My own experience with odd weather only goes back as far as the Fourth of July in 1940 in northern Wisconsin. It had been warm during the day for lighting fire crackers, but the temperature started dropping around sunset.

By dark it was downright cold. Folks setting off the fireworks donned Mackinaw jackets, and my folks wrapped me in a blanket and tucked me into a lawn chair.

Halfway through the Roman candles we noticed ashes floating in the air. Then someone announced that it wasn’t ashes, it was snowing.

I think Lars would have appreciated that.

The axiom asserts “that no press is bad press.” Said in more modern parlance, it would argue that no attention, favorable or unfavorable, that one may find can be detrimental. By extension, it might claim that the news, in itself, cannot cause harm unless the object of it mishandles the event. So, let’s imagine an application. One commits an epic failure – we poison our customers, lie to the camera or transgress some modern social trend. Do we fail at the moment of the firestorm, or do we fail only as the news cycle unwinds? Is it in our handling of the facts more than the facts?

We consumers of modern information are eager to sit in judgment. The daily Twitter feed dispenses the “truth” in 144 characters. We commit to a point of view based in very limited and often fully imperfect information. Then, as more material is uncovered, or released, our positions ripen.

Do we live in an age when the actual news of our transgressions is less important than how we manage to spin the follow-up story?

The media has become a tool to be used, manipulated and relied upon to nudge our perceptions to one point of view or another. A recent study shows that the bulk of some voters have determined that contemporary American universities are causing harm. One Sunday morning news outlet decried the deplorable view that education is bad. The next news outlet asserted that although no one thinks education is bad, the current state of university leadership has failed. Both networks had identical data. How can they be so far-flung in their commentary? Are we being intentionally manipulated? If so, to what end? Will the mud ever settle in a spinning pool?

My husband Doo spent the weekend with his family while I stayed to prepare for the school week. When I called to humor check in, he told me about the debate he’d had with his siblings the night before: Should women stay at home with kids?

Ironically, I was in the process of buying new clothes for work (at my favorite consignment store, of course. I’m a teacher!).

“Please tell me you were on my side!” I said, feeling defensive even though the conversation was over. He had been, but he was the only one. Everyone else felt that women shouldn’t work while their kids were young.

I was appalled, and not just because I’m reading “The Handmaid’s Tale.” How can we be in 2017 and still have such a traditional view of motherhood? I suppose given the political climate, it’s not surprising, but I thought we’d at least come far enough to recognize that what’s best for children is what’s best for the parents. Mom wants to stay at home? More power to her! Mom wants to go back to work? You go, girl!

Dad decides he’s ready for domestic bliss?

Woot! Woot! Nirvana for all!

Personally, I was not cut out to keep toddlers alive and entertained for 10 to 12 hours a day. I couldn’t handle the monotony and loneliness of constantly discussing Barbie’s wardrobe options with a preschooler. Although financial considerations kept me home for many years (teacher, remember?), I couldn’t wait to return to the classroom. And when I finally did, I became a much better mother.

Let’s try and support all moms, wherever they decide to be.

Let tired teens sleep Commentary by Tami Silverman Our teens are tired. Nearly 8 in 10 Indiana high school students sleep less than the recommended eight hours on school nights. Yet adequate sleep is an integral part of healthy development, and consequences of adolescent sleep deprivation are well-documented.

“There’s a clear biological change that happens during and after puberty that leads teenagers to want to fall asleep later and sleep later in the morning,” said Dr. Sarah Honaker, a pediatric sleep specialist at Riley Hospital for Children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics states potential risks of adolescent chronic sleep loss include behavior issues, learning problems, poor impulse control and academic challenges.

In 2014, the AAP recommended that middle and high schools delay the start of school to 8:30 a.m. or later. Research shows delayed start times allow for more school-night sleep, can improve attendance and enhance academic performance.

Yet shifting school start times is complex with many potential concerns, including reduced time for afterschool activities or part-time jobs, potential

safety issues and family child care and schedule challenges.

Several Indiana school districts have shifted or plan to shift to later start times this year. In Boone County, start times range from 7:50 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Zionsville School Corp. has the latest start time in the county. Supt. Scott Robison reports his district spent a year developing its “flip,” slated to start this year.

As parents, many of us enforced structured bedtime routines for our young children. It’s equally important to be involved in a teen’s sleep routines. We should limit our children’s caffeine, reduce or eliminate late-night screen time, encourage regular exercise and plan at least 30 minutes of downtime before bed.

With today’s hectic schedules, finding more sleep time seems like a tall order.

Yet parents, guardians, schools and health care providers must join forces to ensure that our kids get the restorative sleep time they need to recharge and flourish.

A sad closure Commentary by Dick Wolfsie

The Ropkey Armor Museum closed last week after more than 30 years. The founder, military historian humor Fred Ropkey, passed away four years ago. As a tribute, I am re-running my column from 2013.

Fred Ropkey was no fan of war, yet he knew that every tank, aircraft and piece of artillery he recovered was a work of exquisite design — and represented the thousands of lives that had been lost or saved.

His parents gave him a World War 1 sword and a Civil War pistol belonging to his great-grandfather. At age 16 he bought an armored World War II scout car and drove it to school. He stood up in the auditorium at Pike High School the day after Pearl Harbor and “reported” the Japanese attack to his fellow students. He would later serve during the Korean conflict as a battalion commander.

Fred’s collection of arms grew over the years, and he stowed his acquisitions on the sprawling 100 acres of family land in Indianapolis. At the time, the idea was to simply find a place to restore those treasures — more a warehouse than a showcase. In

2005, Fred moved everything to Crawfordsville, signaling a new vision. “Who would think that a little pole barn on a 50-acre cornfield in Crawfordsville could change so many lives?” Fred wondered. It became the Ropkey Armor Museum.

Fred and Lani fully realized the impact the collection had on people. “Are you familiar with that tank?” he once asked an older man as he examined the vehicle. “I practically lived in it,” said the World War II veteran, revealing he had not seen his “old girl” in 40 years. “Thank you,” he said to Fred.

“My life has now come full circle.” Later, the veteran retreated to a hotel room with a bottle of bourbon and wrote an entire account of his experiences, those notes now part of the museum’s Wall of Heroes.

At the end of his life, he chose not to share his plight with others, instead enduring his cancer pain privately.

It was the one battle Fred Ropkey did not want to talk about.

The Zionsville Town Council on Aug. 7 approved a reimbursement of $10,000 to Capstone Benefits Group to cover moving town council expenses if it relocates from Indianapolis to Zionsville’s Northwest Tech Park.

Capstone is a consulting firm that works with employers to improve benefits plans, compliance and straWorrell tegic planning. It has 28 employees and plans to hire 25 more at an average wage of more than $25 per hour after it moves and has room to expand.

The company is considering a move into an 11,000-square-foot warehouse that has been vacant for at least 15 years. Browning Investments owns the building and is planning to make “a significant investment” to upgrade it to office space, although the exact amount it plans to spend is not yet clear, according to Boone County Economic Development Corp.

Some councilors expressed concerns about the deal. Councilor Susana Suarez said previous incentives approved by the town have gone to larger companies and included requirements that they stay in

town for a certain period of time.

“This seems to be a little premature based on these variables that have not been addressed,” she said. “I’m very supportive of incentives; I just don’t feel this is in a place I feel comfortable.”

Worrell said although the incentive does not include a requirement for Capstone to remain in Zionsville, the improvements to be made to the office building would make it much more valuable and attractive in the future.

He also said Capstone is considerSuarez ing other relocation sites and that the incentive is “a key variable in moving forward.”

The Boone County EDC anticipates Capstone would generate more than $90,000 in Local Income Tax in a 10-year period if it moves to Zionsville, assuming that 10 percent of employees are county residents. It also expects the town to receive more than $30,000 in personal property tax levy in that time.

Councilor Kevin Spees questioned the accuracy of the numbers and was the lone vote against the incentive.

The Boone County Commissioners and Boone County Redevelopment Commission are expected to vote on a separate $10,000 incentive for Capstone this month.

On Aug. 21, from approximately 11:50 a.m. to 3 p.m., the moon will pass in front of the sun, causing temporary twivision light in the middle of the day.

A solar eclipse of that magnitude has not occurred since 1945. In Carmel and Westfield, approximately 91 percent of the sun will be covered. Therefore, to see this once-in-a-lifetime event — OK, maybe twice-in-a-lifetime event — safely and comfortably, you will need to prepare.

The eye is essentially a high-powered magnifying glass, focusing light onto your retina. When you look at the sun, that powerful energy is focused perfectly onto your delicate retina. It does not take long to generate irreparable burns.

Although your favorite sunglasses may block 100 percent of harmful UV light, they are still not rated to stare at the sun.

“Eclipse glasses” look much like the paper 3-D glasses at the movies and will only cost you around $2.20 per pair at Amazon.com or

Walmart. Beware of imposters; a truly safe pair of eclipse glasses will be “ISO 12312-2 Certified,” and will say so on the package.

Regardless of what the label says, if it does not display this exact ISO certification, keep looking. It’s not worth the risk.

If you want to see a total solar eclipse, where the sun is completely covered by the moon, head five hours south to Nashville, Tenn. Filtering glasses are still required there, but during the two minutes of “totality,” viewers can safely remove their filters.

I am a big nerd when it comes to galaxies, stars and the incredible vastness of space. The eclipse next month is beyond exciting and you will not want to miss it, but please plan and don’t let a three-hour event damage your eyes forever.

Santa didn’t know the music show was such a major part of Up with People until she did an official interview.

“I just fell in love with it,” Santa said of the show and program. “But I had no background (performing) except dancing when I was younger.”

Around the world cast The nations represented in this fall’s cast are Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Liechtenstein, Mexico, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States (23 states and the Navajo Nation). Some participants had never visited the United States before.

t first, Jobe Wagner was motivated by the opportunity to be in the Up with People production.

“As I grew in the program and I experienced different things, that is only one part that this program can offer you,” said Wagner, a 20-year-old from Burlington, Wis. “I met so many different people from so many different countries. Just the fact that we were able to pull together and not only make a show, but go to each community and inspire each community.”

Up with People’s foundation was built on the idea that music can inspire and provide an avenue for communication with different groups.

Up with People’s cast will perform “The Journey” at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 and 2 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, 1000 Mulberry St. Proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis Club in its mission to help Zionsville Community Schools.

Wagner, who finished a two-year degree in audio engineering, worked with the sound engineer in the first half of this year. Wagner’s main interest is working with live audio at shows.

“It was my first time in the U.S. earlier this year and everything was so exciting,” Marksteiner said. “I was immersed in a totally different culture than I was in Germany, and I grew a lot from it. The leadership aspect really appealed to me.”

Marksteiner only had danced in his free time before this experience.

“The program has been around since the 1960s, so we always do a medley from the ’60s ‘70s and ’80s, and that’s always fun to do,” he said. “There are songs that address problems we have in the world.”

Marksteiner said he especially enjoys doing workshops with children.

In conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the Carmel International Arts Festival, Sept. 23-24, festival organizers are planning to throw a celebration party, Art Rocks, at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 23. It will be free and open to the public.

“We wanted to do something to mark the milestone and have festival attendees celebrate with us,” CIAF President Dawn Fraley said.

Art Rocks will be on Range Line Road just south of Main Street. It will resemble Late Night on Main, the concert series staged by the City of Carmel.

Blueprint for Improvement: Whole house remodel at Geist Commentary by Larry Greene

The home itself, however, needed a major renovation to suit the owners’ needs and make it a better fit with its surroundings.

The goal was to redevelop the interior space and re-imagine the home’s style so the couple could enjoy it for many years to come!

1. One of the main modifications included removing the wall between the kitchen and front room.

This created a central space for everyday life and gatherings.

2. Another significant change converted two small bedrooms and a bathroom into a main-level master suite with a walk-in closet and walk-in shower.

3. The new front porch created both a comfortable place to enjoy the wooded surroundings and also added visual interest to the front façade of the home.

4. Additional changes included relocating the laundry room to create a new half bath, new mudroom storage, updated stair railing and sunroom aesthetics, improved lighting plan and a new front entry door.

Home of the Lipizzaners

Two words often used to describe Vienna, Austria, are “elegant” and “stately.”

Those words also aptly detravel scribe the Spanish Riding School, in which Vienna’s famous Lipizzaner horses perform in a building literally fit for a king.

In about 1562, Archduke Maximillian, a member of the Habsburg family who later became Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian II, set out to create the best fighting horses in the world for the empire’s cavalry. He started with horses from Spain that had descended from those used by the Berbers from North Africa in conquering most of the Iberian Peninsula beginning in 712 A.D. Maximillian crossbred the Spanish horses with those from northern Europe in the town of Lipizza, now in Slovenia. The resulting breed, combining elegance, strength and the ability to learn complex maneuvers, became known as Lipizzan, or Lipizzaner.

In 1572, then-Emperor Maximillian established a school to train the Lipizzaner horses for battle, using methods originating in fifth century B.C. Greece. The name,

Spanish Riding School, recognized the horses’ origins. Initially, the horses were trained in a wooden arena in the Hofburg palace complex of the Habsburg’s adjacent Josefsplatz in central Vienna. In 1729, Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI commissioned a magnificent new hall near Vienna’ Michaelerplatz for the now famous school.

Empress Maria Theresa used the baroquestyle white building, with two enormous crystal chandeliers and two tiers of seats, for public competitions and masked balls.

Beethoven once conducted a concert in the hall using 1,000 musicians. In 1848, after the Austrian Revolution, Austria’s first representative assembly met in the Spanish Riding School building.

During the days of the Habsburgs, only the royal family and its guests could observe the training and performances of the Lipizzaner horses, all stallions. Today, performances are open to the public.
