Officials honor officer for 40 years of service

Capt. Robert Musgrave TOWN COUNCIL a plaque honoring his 40 years with ZPD. The Town Hall was packed Aug. 16 with residents and family members celebrating Musgrave’s milestone.

Haak recalled his first encounter with Musgrave years ago, when Haak was visiting home from college.

“My first experience meeting Bob was much like most other people’s, and it will tell you everything you need to know about him,” Haak said. “I had the opportunity to meet with him in the front seat of his patrol car. He sat me down, explained to me what I did wrong, looked me square in the eye and said, ‘Tim, you’re a good kid. I know your

parents and, more importantly, I know where you live.’ And he sent me home.”

Musgrave is the longest-serving full-time police officer in Zionsville.

“Forty years doing anything, let alone being a police officer, is quite the accomplishment,” Haak said. “We are grateful and fortunate to have him with us.”

As Knox presented Musgrave with the plaque, he spoke of the many dedicated men and women on Zionsville’s police force. At the top of the list, he said, was Musgrave.

“His dedication to the Zionsville Police Dept. and the Town of Zionsville is secondto-none, and I’m very honored to have worked alongside him for so many years,” Knox said.

Last month, American Legion Post 79 presented Musgrave with the American Legion Dept. of Indiana 6th District Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award.

The Community Foundation of Boone County is accepting applications for the 2019 Lilly Endowment EDUCATION Community Scholarship, which covers full tuition to a four-year Indiana school of the recipient’s choice and a $900 stipend for books and supplies.

“The Lilly Scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious scholarships in the state. Not only do students get four-year, full-ride tuition to any college in Indiana, they have the honor of forever representing their community as the Lilly Scholar,” said Ali Maxey, philanthropic services coordinator for the foundation.

“It means something different for each student who receives it. Some may not have completed a four-year degree otherwise. For others, it may mean their dream of going to medical school or graduate school will be a reality due to (receiving)

funding for their undergraduate program.”

An average of 60 students apply through the Community Foundation of Boone County each year. Each of Indiana’s 92 counties awards a number of scholarships based on population.

J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons, Eli and J.K. Jr., founded Lilly Endowment, Inc. in 1937.

The endowment’s objective is to “nurture the human spirit, intellect and character.”

The Lilly Endowment Scholarship program was launched in 1998 and is administered

by Independent Colleges of Indiana.

The top nine applicants are interviewed by the Lilly Scholarship Committee. Two are chosen and surprised with the news at their respective schools.

“It’s always a difficult decision for the committee,” Maxey said. “The students who apply truly exemplify the best of our community. They are all worthy of the honor.”

Semi truck crashes into bridge news@currentinzionsville.com A semi truck carrying baby formula crashed early Aug. 2 on westbound ROADS I-465 over Zionsville Road. The truck took out part of the side of the bridge. The left two lanes of the interstate, as well as the I-865 onramp, were closed for a few hours.

The semi ended up on its side and took out a concrete barrier. Two people, the driver and a person in another vehicle, were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

It is unclear what caused the crash. Repairs have been made to the bridge.

WESTFIELD INDOT will perform strip patching on Ind. 32 from Noblesville to Westfield. A project timeline has not been announced, but no road closures are anticipated. Motorists should be cautious, and INDOT flaggers will be in place to control traffic flow.

The Towne Road Improvement Project is ongoing, and the road is closed to through traffic from 156th Street to 161st Street. The closure began July 11, and should be finished in October.

Three box culverts will be replaced, and new ditches will be cut to facilitate better roadside drainage. Each travel lane will be widened by 2 feet, and grade adjustments along the road will improve line of sight. The intersection at Towne Road and 151st Street is now a four-way stop.

A new connection that will link 146th Street to southbound Keystone Parkway is under construction. Lane closures are active on Keystone Parkway, and construction is expected to last through 2019.

E.R.I.K.A. program to discourage scammers

The Whitestown Police Dept. this month launched a program it hopes will help motorists and discourage SAFETY scammers. The Emergency Response in Kindness Assistance - or E.R.I.K.A. - was named after a local woman, Erika Shepherd, who was approached by a woman asking for money earlier this year. Shepherd wanted to help but suspected the person might be a scammer when she asked to be driven to an ATM. “The woman (told Shepherd) she’d recently broken up with her boyfriend and needed money to get back home, out of state, to her family,” said Tanya Sumner, Sumner director of public relations for Whitestown.

Shepherd later told her father, Mike Hancock, a police board member, about the incident. He approached Whitestown Chief of Police Dennis Anderson and the police board about a way to help those truly in need.

Anderson is familiar with many stories like Shepherd’s, in which citizens feel caught between protecting themselves and assisting others. The E.R.I.K.A. Program will allow Whitestown police to intervene in such cases and offer $25 prepaid cards to stranded travelers or anyone with a legitimate emergency need.

“We’re always encountering people who are running out of gas,” Anderson said. “We had an incident last fall where a mother and her kids were traveling and the battery went bad in her minivan. She had money on her, but not enough for a battery.

That kind of assistance is what we’re looking to be able to provide.”

Anderson also said the program is designed to discourage scammers.

“If I’m a scammer, the last thing I want to do is have a conversation with law enforcement. So, if you tell someone asking for

money that the police can assist them and they say, ‘No, no, nevermind,’you’ve probably avoided being scammed.”

The program is simple. Police supervisors distribute $25 gift cards to officers, who give them to people who have a genuine immediate need, such as a vehicle breakdown.

“The only criteria will be that there is a need. Many times, right off the interstate, people run out of gas or break down, often times with their children in the vehicle with them,” Sumner said. “The E.R.I.K.A. cards cannot be used to draw cash, but they can be used at gas stations, auto repair shops, restaurants and hotels.

Our officers will take the recipient’s information for our records and make sure the cards are being used by those who have a true Anderson need.”

Shepherd’s father, Hancock, came up with the name.

“It made sense to him, since it was his daughter’s experience that sparked the idea. It’s also an easy way to remember the name for the program. We believe it worked out just perfectly,” Sumner said.

A Whitestown business owner, who wants to remain anonymous, is funding the program. The business is willing to donate $500 a year to the program, which will pay for 20 cards loaded with $25. If the program is successful, the business will donate another $500 in 2019.

“We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response so far on social media,” Sumner said.

“People we’ve heard from think it’s great because they really do want to help those in need but don’t want scammers making people feel uncomfortable, or even unsafe, in their communities.”

“I think any time that you’re doing community policing, it has a positive impact.

The role of law enforcement is to help people in need, and that’s what this program is,” Anderson said.

“If I’m a scammer, the last thing I want to do is have a conversation with law enforcement.”

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com On Aug. 4, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce hosted the 42nd annual Zionsville Street Dance on Main MAIN STREET Street.

Tracy Phillips, Zionsville Chamber of Commerce executive director, said the event always is well-attended, but this year’s turnout was bigger than previous years.

“We are giving it a conservative estimate of 8,000 people in attendance,” Phillips said.

“We were really pleased with the turnout.”

The Street Dance is the chamber’s largest annual fundraiser. Tickets were $10 in advance or $15 at the event entrance.

“We are dependent on fundraisers so we can do what’s best for economic and business development for our community,” Phillips said. “This is very important for us so we can continue to serve.”

The event has grown and evolved through the years but has always taken place on the brick street. PolkaBoy, a local polka band with a large following, has played at the event in previous years and was this year’s featured performer.

“The advantage of bringing PolkaBoy in is that they get people up and dancing,” Phillips said. “As I always tell people, it’s not street sit, it’s street dance.”

PolkaBoy’s drummer Frank DiBortolo adds a cymbal flourish to a song.

Phillips said PolkaBoy also attracts its own loyal crowd.

“Wherever they go, there’s a group of people that follow them every weekend,” Phillips said. “It gives (attendees) the opportunity to discover Zionsville and gives us a chance to showcase Main Street to people who are not necessarily from Zionsville.”

The chamber’s primary purpose for hosting community events, Phillips said, is to attract people to the town.

“They come back later for dinner or shopping. They will know (the businesses) are there and come back,” Phillips said.

This year’s Street Dance also included food vendors, beer, wine and additional music and entertainment. The event was emceed by radio personality Kristi Lee, a Zionsville resident.

Co-op preschool launches forest kindergarten

Carmel Cooperative Preschool, in West Carmel bordering Zionsville, is introducing a nature-based program EDUCATION this school year. The Fireflies class, a kindergarten curriculum, begins Sept. 4.

Kindergarten teacher Jessica Vince said the program encourages students to learn through exploration, socialization, experimentation and problem-solving. Vince previously taught traditional kindergarten classes in Pike and Warren townships.

The play-based, child-centered curriculum is aligned with state standards and also allows children unstructured play time during “forest days,” when children spend the whole day outside exploring. Vince said the outdoor activities promote imaginative play, creativity, hand-eye coordination and balance while helping children build self-confidence.

“This unstructured outside time allows children to learn by building on their own discoveries and interests, making a deeper connection to the natural world,” Vince said.

“The indoor activities throughout the week will build upon what the children found relevant and showed interest in.”

CCP decided to launch the class after noting a gap in available classes for children who didn’t meet the age cut-off for kindergarten and for parents seeking parttime programs on the north side of Carmel.

Classes will be from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Zionsville resident Laura Feagans has two children enrolled at CCP: Porter, 4, who will be in the Honeybees class, and Mack, 3, who will be in the Grasshoppers class. Feagans said the new Fireflies class fills a need in the community for parents seeking an alternative to traditional kindergarten.

“We decided to enroll our children at Carmel Cooperative Preschool because of the focus on play-based learning, parent involvement and the overall fun and positive learning environment,” Feagans said.

“We wanted something more than learning the ABCs and one, two, threes. We wanted our kids to learn the life skills they will use throughout their lives.”

“Carmel Cooperative Preschool is an inclusive community where children, parents and educators work together to create a positive play-based learning environment that allows all children to successfully grow emotionally, intellectually and physically,” Swaney said.

As a co-op, parents assist in the classroom twice per month. The Fireflies program also will incorporate unique enrichment activities, including yoga with Silly Hearts Yoga, music with Mr. Daniel and learning French.

Enrollment for the Fireflies class ends Sept. 4. The class is open to children ages 5 to 6 who were born between July 31, 2012 and Sept. 1, 2013. Open enrollment for the 2019-20 school year begins Jan. 20, 2019. For information, visit carmelcooperative.org.

Students compete at Hackathon

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The second annual CoderDojo Hackathon was July 28 at DeveloperTown, a technology company housed TECHNOLOGY inside a refurbished warehouse where every office is a tiny house on wheels, creating an interchangeable setup.

A hackathon is an event during which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming. This hackathon was for students of CoderDojo schools.

CoderDojo Indiana is a program for kids ages 7 to 17 to learn about computer science. The program aims to inspire students to consider technology or development

Boone County resident Kent Eastwood has transitioned from chief deputy prosecutor to prosecuting GOVERNMENT attorney. He replaced Todd Meyer in June.

Meyer resigned to become an associate director at the Indiana Dept. of Child Services.

“I was already the Republican candidate for the fall election,” Eastwood said.

“No Democrats filed (to run) against me.

As of Jan. 1, I was going to be the next prosecutor.”

By law, a caucus must be held to determine a replacement for the rest of Meyer’s term. Eastwood was chosen to complete the last few months of the term. Eastwood has been the deputy prosecutor for the past seven years.

“My role was to oversee the day-to-day operations of the prosecutors and staff and run the big investigations, in addition to being in charge of the drug task force in terms of those prosecutions,” Eastwood said.

Jon Gilman, CEO of Clear Software in Zionsville, helped found the Zionsville chapter of CoderDojo in September 2017. The program has nearly 100 students, most of whom are older than 10. The July 28 event was the first time Zionsville CoderDojo students were involved in the Hackathon.

The event was comprised of four separate competitions. Students could build a mobile app with a group of two to six; build a video game with a group of two to six; compete in an individual Python competition; or compete in an individual Scratch competition. Python and Scratch are two of the programming languages taught at the Dojo.

Trophies were awarded for both individual challenges and team competitions.

Officer Josh Chapman finds calling in helping community

By Dawn Pearson news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville police officer Josh Chapman, a 2006 Carmel High School graduate, began college at Indiana State TECHNOLOGY University thinking he would major in athletic training and sports medicine because he loved learning about it in high school.

While contemplating his degree choice, he skipped an advisor meeting to listen to a distinguished alumni FBI agent speak on campus and discovered a new passion -law enforcement.

Chapman immediately headed to his advisor’s office to change his major.

“She wasn’t mad I skipped the meeting

to attend the lecture. She thought it was great, so she helped me get the extra courses and summer classes I needed to complete my degree and still graduate in four years,” Chapman said. “Once I was majoring in criminology, I knew I found my calling. I got all As and Bs.” Chapman joined the Zionsville Police Dept. in 2012 as a volunteer/reserve officer. He became a full-time officer in 2013. He loves being a police officer because it allows him to make a positive impact on the community. He doesn’t just walk the beat. He takes the steps needed to help people.

“I can arrest a drunk driver, but I would rather take a call from a person who is suicidal and talk to them and help that person heal,” he said.

Chapman described helping a young woman and her family in a time of crisis.

She was not doing well in school or at home. He had been called to their home for domestic violence and possible suicide.

During the course of about a year, Chapman continued to check in with her, taking walks with her just to talk. She is now a candidate in a doctorate program.

With his care for the community and concern for all, it isn’t a surprise that Chapman volunteers and participates in Special Olympics. He was named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2017, representing Indiana in the Summer Games in Terre Haute.

He carried the torch and lit the caldron to start the games. He attended the 2018 USA National Games in Seattle in June.

“The Special Olympics are like no other sports,” he said. “There are amazing moments that you don’t see in professional sports. During the games one runner fell down near the finish line, and what did the other athletes do? They all stopped, helped him up and finished the race together. This is what the Special Olympics are all about, tear-jerk moments and love.”

Chapman also participates in the games as a Unified Partner and athlete. He is a ballroom dance partner with Mattie Best, who has Down syndrome.

He gives much of his free time to the community, coordinating and volunteering for Special Olympics, the Torch Run, Polar Plunge, Tip-A-Cop and Cops on a Rooftop, among other activities.

He is respected throughout the police force as well.

“He is definitely one of the go-to people we have. He always gives 110 percent into any project you assign to him,” ZPD Chief of Police Robert Knox said. “He puts his heart and determination into helping other people and doing his job. Officer Chapman is very dedicated to his chosen profession. Just look at the photo of Josh holding the Special Olympic Torch at this year’s state games in Terre Haute. This sums up officer Josh Chapman and his dedication to the Special Olympics. He is so into helping, participating and being a part of this amazing organization.”

Chapman’s other major job assignment for ZPD is senior school resource officer at Zionsville High School.

“My detail is to protect staff, students and the assets of the school, teaching and dealing with any problems that may arise,” Chapman said.

He teaches students and staff in government and health classes and is the lead trainer for officers, teaching them to develop their place in the schools. Zionsville now has a police officer in every school.

Chapman said having police in schools is necessary in today’s world.

“It’s sad we’ve reached this level in our culture where schools and churches are soft targets for criminals,” Chapman said.

“It’s hard to protect schools because they

On the other hand, Chapman said, police presence in schools reinforces police officers as a safe and reassuring resource.

“Kids get to see police officers in a nonconfrontational setting and see them as the people we are, (so they are not) afraid of the police,” Chapman said.

Augustine Washington was 47 years old when he confronted his fifth child, George — who would grow up to the become the nation’s first president — about the destruction of a prized fruit tree at their property by the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia. The youngster hung his head to say, “I cannot tell a lie, I did it with my little hatchet.” Old dad responded, “Noble boy, I would rather lose a thousand trees than have you tell a lie.” Good point.

Some dispute the veracity of the tale while others are comfortable with the hazy facts because of its virtue as a parable of truth over consequence. Indeed, the elder Washington showed both wisdom and restraint in valuing the lesson beyond the material. How better to teach that “honesty is the best policy” than to remember it when injured?

Still, truth, especially the kind that will bring pain to ourselves or others, is rarely an uncomplicated concept. We hold back to conceal our intentions or to protect the feelings of others. Like a child hiding from her brother his toy that she has broken, can we hope to make truth disappear because we hide it? Or, is it still lurking, only awaiting discovery and release? Might we advance honest expression without the hurt?

Or, should we come to accept that a bit of distress may be the best thing?

Could direct and uncomfortable conversation be the best path to the least unpleasantness? And if so, can we find a way to only say things we mean – not to only say mean things? How can we navigate the truth and manage hurt feelings at the same time? Compassion is not easily defined. Can too much be more hurtful than too little?

I’m questioning my parenting this week.

I allowed my 17-year-old daughter to go to Chicago for a concert. With a friend whose last name I still don’t know HUMOR and who I couldn’t pick out of a lineup. On the Megabus.

Without being totally positive about where she’d be sleeping.

In fairness to me, my high school senior has never given me reason to mistrust her, and she is fairly street savvy. Punctuality and time management, though, are not her strengths, and she tends to go about life just assuming everything will work out, even if she makes no discernible effort to make it so.

For instance, she didn’t buy her bus ticket until two nights before her departure — and only because I asked her if she had made the purchase. As for her overnight accommodations, she considered a recent Snapchat conversation with her teenage cousin confirmation enough that she had a place to stay. The parents had no idea!

And yet, I let her go. As punishment for my lack of maternal caring, I did suffer through one extremely long night of anxiety driven by thoughts of every possible thing that could go wrong, from not being able to park in downtown Indy to becoming a murder victim off Lake Michigan.

Alas, she survived and had an amazing time, despite — or maybe because of — a few interesting moments, including walking into a house at midnight that turned out not to be her uncle’s. And I suppose I learned a good lesson. You have to let your children take risks, even if it makes you feel like a bad parent.

Marijuana should be decriminalized in Indiana Commentary by Donald Rainwater Our government officials have made the opioid addiction crisis a major subject of discussion during the past OPINION few years. Unfortunately, the discussion always centers on increasing spending on programs that have failed to produce successful results.

I believe that major contributors to the crisis are synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine. These highly addictive, commercially produced, man-made compounds, which have been the “gateway” for thousands of victims of opioid addiction, are manufactured and sold by big pharmaceutical companies.

If synthetic opioids are the issue, what is the solution? How do thousands of individuals suffering with physical, psychological or emotional pain get relief? Is there a less-addictive pain management alternative that does not introduce opioids into a patient’s brain chemistry?

The alternative is medicinal marijuana.

It is considered by many to be a homeopathic approach to pain management. The chemical compounds in cannabis, called cannabinoids, have been linked to many

positive therapeutic benefits without the same level of addiction and overdose risks associated with opioids.

I can’t definitively say that marijuana isn’t a “gateway” drug. However, I do know that prescription opioids offer a more direct “pathway to the gate” of opioid addiction than marijuana does.

Any reasonable, honest human being understands this. Those who maintain that medical marijuana shouldn’t be decriminalized because it’s a “gateway” drug are being intellectually insulting and dishonest. If “gateway” drugs shouldn’t be legal, then where is the bill to criminalize the manufacture and sale of fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine?

Decriminalization of medicinal marijuana is a positive step in the efforts to reduce opioid addiction in Indiana. Medical marijuana provides a potentially lessaddictive alternative for those who need pain management assistance, a positive outcome all Hoosiers should support.

Fearing hay fever season Commentary by Ward Degler I always hated to see August arrive when I was a kid. That was the month hay fever season started. Hay fever PLAIN TALK hit me like a ton of bricks: itchy, watery eyes, runny nose and non-stop sneezing.

I had to sleep sitting up just to breathe, and my eyes sealed shut during the night.

We were living in southern Missouri at the time – the worst hay fever place on the planet, I think, with lots of dust and pollen.

Several other kids in town also got hay fever. Two of them routinely got shots. I don’t know what the vaccine was, but it seemed to help. Another kid had relatives in Colorado and his parents sent him out to Denver every year until things cooled down back home.

Medical science hadn’t stumbled upon antihistamines yet, so the only relief I found was an over-the-counter tablet called Haysma. Somebody told me it was mostly caffeine. I ate it like candy and spent most of my waking hours bouncing off the walls. It did provide some relief, but I stayed mostly miserable all the time.

As I grew older I discovered some places

in the world didn’t have hay fever. I spent two years in Germany without a single sneeze. In the Navy I learned that hay fever didn’t exist when you were on a ship a thousand miles from the closest ragweed plant.

Years later, back in the Midwest, I found a prescription antihistamine that was effective enough to allow me to breathe and to sleep lying down.

By this time, I was reconciled to being miserable the last couple months of summer for the rest of my life. Allergies began creeping in at other times of the year as well.

Then, a magical thing happened. I discovered that I had a major allergic reaction to alcohol. Alcoholism, I discovered, is essentially the mother of all food allergies.

The magic is this: When I stopped drinking alcohol, all of my allergies, including hay fever, went away and never returned.

Glorious relief! Even so, there is a town in southern Missouri I stay away from in late summer.

Facebook has received some rough financial reports lately. I’ve endured a few difficult business deals, too HUMOR — like during our garage sale last weekend, when a woman talked me down to 50 cents for a Channel 8 coffee mug. But I realized I had a better day than Mark Zuckerberg by about $70 billion.

One man was asking me questions about an old portable CD player that was marked a lousy dollar.

“Does it work?” he asked.

“Of course, it doesn’t work. It’s a dollar. If it worked, it would be two dollars.”

The most annoying thing was when people whipped around the cul-de-sac, eyeballed our offerings and sped off when disappointed with the selection. Occasionally, someone would shout out what they were searching for: “Got any assault weapons?”

“Any toddler clothing?”

By the way, this was the same person.

Our friends helped us with the sale. Cathy and Bob are experts in getting the highest price for things like an old cable connector, a box of buttons, a back-scratcher, blank

VHS tapes, a dial phone and a six-pack of lawnmower oil. Friends like this don’t come cheap — but the Haversticks are cheap, so they knew exactly what we should charge.

At the end of the weekend, there were three unsold bookshelves. Mary Ellen put an ad on Craigslist saying they were free. Two days later they were still in our driveway.

“Why doesn’t anyone want them?” she asked.

“Who wants something that we’re admitting is worthless? Let’s post an ad saying the shelves are $495 and they can leave us a check under the doormat.”

“Do you think someone will buy them?”

“No, of course not,” I said, “but someone will steal them overnight.”

Bingo. Gone the next morning.

We also still had hundreds of unsold books, which was OK because some of those old favorites would have been tough to part with.

I just wish I had a place to put them.

Riverview Health Westfield Hospital to Host Open House

Construction of Riverview Health Westfield Hospital nears completion.

WESTFIELD—Located at the northeast corner of U.S. Route 31 and state Route 32, the much-anticipated Riverview Health Westfield Hospital will open in September. The new hospital features the area’s first combined ER and urgent care, which means you only have to go to one place when you’re sick or injured, and you will be guided to the level of care you need.

When the project was announced a few years ago, it was originally intended to be an outpatient center. However, after construction began, it was determined that the city of Westfield needed its own hospital.

Westfield and the surrounding areas have experienced tremendous growth, and as the county hospital, Riverview Health wanted to be able to meet the needs of this growing community.

Riverview Health Westfield Hospital will also house an inpatient unit, surgical suites, a drive-thru pharmacy, laboratory and imaging services, an employer clinic, WorkMed and physician offices. The hospital’s first two floors will open in September. The upper floors will open in phases over the next three to four months.

A Letter To Our Community When I was considering taking on the role of president and CEO of Riverview Health, an important deciding factor was feeling connected to the community and the people living in it. Witham awards medical education loans

Each year, Witham Health Services Foundation awards medical education loans to applicants who are planning to enter or are currently enrolled in college and plan to become a medical professional.

The loans are available to Boone County residents and Witham employees. They are renewable for up to four years. Upon degree completion, applicants must agree to work at Witham Health Services until the loan is repaid in full via hours worked. Recipients may also choose to repay the loan monetarily, with interest.

Since its inception in 1988, the loan program has provided more than $300,000 in educational loans to local students and employees. Applicants must be legal residents of Boone County and be enrolled in a full-time, fully accredited program. Selection of loan recipients is not based on financial need. First priority is given to applicants who pursue educational programs that directly benefit Witham Health Services.

Situated in the heart of Indiana’s distribution market, the speculative building is expected to be completed in December.

Dance is major attraction at Greek Festival

EVENT It has become a lifelong passion.

Alexiou, 48, has been director of the Greek Dance Program for the past year for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

The dance troupes perform each day of the Aug. 24-26 GreekFest at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3500 W. 106th St., Carmel.

Alexiou, a Fishers resident, has been dancing since the adult program started approximately three years ago. She started teaching when her oldest son, Alex Head, was in fifth grade. She taught both Alex, now 26, and Stephen Head, 23, through high school. She took a break and then returned to teach three years ago.

“We perform at all types of events as long as it is highlighting the Greek culture and community,” Alexiou said.

Alexiou said each group performs between 15 and 20 minutes.

“That leaves time for the members to

dance with it,” she said. “Our church is very much into sharing our Greek culture and heritage with all of the community.

We don’t care what nationality you are or what ethnicity you are. We want everyone to come out and enjoy being Greek for a day. That involves our food and joining us to dance. The majority of Greek dances are dancing in a circle and holding everyone’s hands. The fun thing is that we get to share our culture with the world.”

The troupes are divided by age, kindergarten through second grade, third through fifth grade, middle school, high school and adult.

“It’s fun to see the grandparents dancing with their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren,” said Alexiou, who is an executive assistant to the president and board of directors for Heartland International Film Festival.

“I enjoy learning about my culture and heritage. I find it fun,” Agapios said.

GreekFest President Marika Kalyvas Bagios said an estimated 15,000 people visit during the three-day festival, although it’s

hard to get an exact count because admission is free.

“The money raised goes to the general fund, which supports the various groups and community outreach programs the church is involved with,” Kalyvas Bagios said.

Kalyvas Bagios said there are more bounce houses this year in the children’s Bounce House City area.

More than 560 volunteers participated in 2017 and a similar number is expected this year GreekFest started in 1974.

“Celebration of the Bands” will not be held this year because of construction in downtown Carmel, Indiana Wind Symphony Conductor Charlie Conrad said.

Conrad, who started the two-day “Celebration of the Bands in 2015,” will instead have one free outdoor concert, called “American Dreams,” conducted by the IWS at 7 p.m. on the Center Green in front of The Palladium in Carmel.

The soloist for the concert is jazz clarinetist Shawn Goodman, who will play a new work by Indianapolis composer Ryan Fraley, “Rhapsody on Cue.” Among other pieces will be “American Fanfare” by James Stephenson; “Yosemite Autumn” by Mark Camphouse; “Savannah River Holiday” by Ron Nelson; and Kelly Bennette’s “American Revolution Medley.”

The concert will close with “American Dream” by James Beckel.

“He recently finished a 49-year career as principal trombone of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and is a favorite composer of the Indiana Wind Symphony,” Conrad said.

Dee Timi found a creative way to combine two of her passions.

Timi is the activity director THEATER of PrimeLife Enrichment in Carmel and is on the board of Carmel Community Players.

“We received a dozen huge garbage sacks of material, a gift from an employee at Eli Lilly, so I contacted three or four of our sewing club ladies and told them my dream was to make aprons for ‘The Kitchen Witches,’ said Timi, a Westfield resident. “They said, ‘Heck, yeah, we’ll help you.’”

Timi, who is the producer for the theater production “The Kitchen Witches,” said the club started designing aprons for the actresses to wear during the show.

“We have more than 50 aprons to sell to support CCP for $5 each,” Timi said. “It’s going to help offset the cost of food we have to buy for these cooking shows.”

The comedy is centered around two feuding hosts of a cable TV cooking show.

Wine cocktails a hit in summer Commentary by Elizabeth Morse Often in the summertime we find ourselves entertaining larger groups of people.

This is a great opportuWINEderlust nity to make your wine fridge work for you.

Wine cocktails enable you to serve budgetfriendly wines in an upscale way. They are also a great way to make fine wine go a bit further.

Instead of making specific wine suggestions, I’m going to give you a few no-fail recipes where you can use what you’ve got or what’s on sale. You’re welcome.

• My favorite ever: Take a champagne flute and drop a cube of sugar in the bottom. Splash a few drops of blood orange bitters over the cube and fill the remainder of the glass with any sparkling wine. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

• This next libation uses any white wine. Super simple. Equal parts of wine, lemonade and cranberry juice.

Mix in a pitcher, serve over ice and top with a splash of ginger ale.

• For red wine lovers, try this one: Three parts of any red and one part 7 Up. Serve over ice and add a few frozen red grapes to fancy things up.

• Last but not least, a Moscato martini. Moscato is so popular these days but pretty sweet. Mixing equal parts of chilled Moscato and icy cold vodka presents a more sophisticated approach. It can also use up that random flavored vodka you’ve been hanging onto. Almost any vodka will work.

Anna’s take: Ocean Prime staff was exceptionally generous and professional. General Manager Willie Nieberger walked my guest and I through a dining experience that began with Ahi Tuna Tartare, shrimp cocktail served over billowing dry ice and cold king crab legs from Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Following the apps, we sampled the Chilean Sea Bass, the 10 oz. filet mignon topped with garlic shrimp scampi and black truffle mac & cheese and broccoli and cauliflower sides served family style. We finished the evening with a 10-layer carrot cake with cream cheese icing and pineapple syrup.

The Ahi Tuna Tartare featured layers of avocado, fried wonton strips, sushi-grade tuna and was topped with a dollop of sour cream and ginger. A ginger ponzu sauce and sesame seeds added an Asian flair, and the crunch of the wontons complemented the tuna and creamy sour cream.

The Chilean Sea Bass is served atop whipped potatoes with a champagne truffle sauce. The delicate, flaky fish was adorned with black truffle slices. As for the filet, it was exceptionally tender and melted in my mouth.

Ocean Prime was one of the finest, most upscale dining experiences I have ever enjoyed. The food paired with the A-1 service was excellent.

Suggested pairings: For the lighter appetizers, pair with a sparkling Veuve Rose (half off on Fridays), a cucumber gimlet or a Sunlight Cream Ale. Pair the filet mignon with a Manhattan garnished with Luxardo cherries or a glass of Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon.

Behind bars: Berries & Bubbles Get it at Ocean Prime, Indianapolis Ingredients: 1.25 oz. Belvedere Citrus, .75 oz. Crème de Cassis, 1.5 oz. sour mix, 1 oz. The goal was to create a transitional design for the kitchen and bathrooms while making each space work better for the homeowners’ lifestyle.

1. In the kitchen, the largest transformation came from new white cabinetry and adding more cabinets to fill the space. The cabinets’ height also was extended to the ceiling, which is a visual trick that helps to make the room appear larger.

2. Another change came from replacing the countertops in the kitchen and extending the island, which created more functional countertop space for the homeowner.

3. Convenient storage solutions were incorporated to help keep countertop appliances hidden.

4. Updates were made to the master, guest and powder bathrooms. One of the most dramatic bathroom updates came from removing the tub in the master bathroom to create more space.

Background Info: This early 1990s home is in the Woodgate neighborhood of Carmel. The homeowners love the home but wanted to give it an overall update to help them get more use out of the space they have because they plan to stay in the home for several more years.

BEFORE PROBLEMS The original kitchen felt small and there was limited cabinet storage and countertop space. The kitchen also was very dark and lacked design appeal. In addition to the kitchen, several bathrooms never had been updated.

Changing of the guard Commentary by Don Knebel Every hour during the day, guards change in front of an enormous statue of Chiang Kai-Shek in Taipei, Taiwan.

TRAVEL Someday soon, the statue itself will change.

Chiang Kai-Shek became chairman of the Republic of China in 1928. In 1949, after his forces were defeated by the Communists, he removed himself and 2 million Chinese to Taiwan, an island 112 miles from the mainland, where he established a government in exile and ruled with an iron fist. He maintained martial law and initiated the “white terror,” in which 140,000 Taiwanese were imprisoned and at least 3,000 executed for suspected opposition to his government.

After Chiang Kai-Shek died in 1975, the oneparty government constructed a building in his memory at the east end of 60-acre Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Park. The white Memorial Hall is covered by an eight-sided roof, the number eight representing prosperity and good fortune. Eighty-nine steps, representing Chiang Kai-Shek’s age at death, lead to an imposing hall featuring a 32-foot tall bronze statue of the seated ruler.

Beginning in the 1980s, massive demonstrations took place in the park demanding a democratic government. These demonstrations led to the first free elections in 1996, after which Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Park was renamed Liberty Park. Beginning in 2007, Taiwanese citizens began demanding that Chiang Kai-Shek’s statue be removed from Memorial Hall because of his no-longer-acceptable autocratic rule. In 2017, 30 years after the elimination of martial law, the government announced plans to remove the statue and transform the hall into a center for “facing history, recognizing agony, and respecting human rights.” Public discussions about the transformation are under way, with some people advocating that the building be destroyed. Liberty Park now contains the impressive National Concert Hall and National Theatre. How much longer it will contain Memorial Hall is an open question.

Doesn’t it feel good to do battle with someone with whom you don’t agree behind the safety of GRAMMAR GUY a screen? We jump on Twitter on our smartphones to call someone a loser in all caps. We hide inside our anonymous online identities, rapidly re-sharing the outrage du jour. Our TV pundits aren’t even in the same room; they lob talking points like hand grenades at each other via satellite.

Verbal combat over social media and cable news is pointless. Nobody wins.

Today, I want to tackle the dummy subject (also referred to as an artificial or empty subject), which is a verbal construction that weakens your writing, making it seem vague and nebulous. You find yourself using a dummy subject whenever you use “it” or “there” to start a sentence without referring to the noun “it” or “there” represents. Let me use some examples: Weak: It seems like everyone’s just yelling past each other.

Better: After watching shows on MS-

NBC, Fox News and CNN for an hour, my brain hurt. It seems like everyone’s just yelling past each other.

In the second example, “it” refers back to “shows” in the first sentence.

“There” also gets used as a dummy subject: Weak: There are 37 varieties of pineapples in the world.

Better: The World Fruit Council has identified 37 varieties of pineapples in the world.

The second example is stronger because it provides a source for the fact about pineapples. Without the authority of someone like the “World Fruit Council” (which I just made up), the sentence feels indefinite.

In the same way that arguing from behind the shield of a screen makes our arguments go nowhere, using dummy subjects makes your writing sound uncertain and wobbly.

Training begins NOW to start presenting in August!

Candidates must possess the following skills/abilities:

• Excellent communication skills • Reliable transportation - grammar, enunciation, poise • Goal driven - results/sales oriented • Professional appearance • Previous experience with public speaking, teach• Flexibility ing, sales, and/or theater is helpful • The ability to relate to teens • Enthusiastic and energetic This is an excellent part-time opportunity for those who want to work two to four school days per week August through April.

Compensation for new presenters is $120/day plus mileage reimbursement.

Presenters are required to memorize 50-minute educational presentations and are compensated $75-$100 for each presentation learned.
