Trailer park resident responds to potential relocation

Matt Price wasn’t a fan of some of the developments proposed near his home in Zionsville’s Village area, so he development decided to take matters into his own hands.

He partnered with two neighbors to purchase 13 acres at 410 S. 4th St. and 500 S. Main St., which is home to the Zionsville Trailer Park but is mostly comprised of forested land. Two years later, he is working to transform the area into a neighborhood of 24, two- to threestory homes known as The Cove.

“There does seem to be some uncertainty as to what people would like to see happen in that area,” said Price, a former member of the Zionsville Town Council. “We think our land is best used for residential purposes and greenspace and not for a parking field to support something more intense like a commercial development.”

In 2016, the council rejected plans for 200 West, a mixed-use project, just east of Price’s land. The Zionsville Plan Commission is considering rezoning that land from B3 Commercial to Urban Village District, which has more restrictions on the types of businesses allowed.

Price said many developers have contacted him about using some of his forested land for parking to support potential commercial projects at that site, but he said he has no interest in using it for that purpose.

Homes in The Cove would be designed by Sigma Builders and are expected to sell for $400,000 to $500,000. Price said they will primarily be built where the trailers are now, leaving undeveloped more than 75 percent of the site that includes a large pond and forested areas. This will allow for beautiful views, Price said, and serve as a buffer between the neighborhood and any future development in nearby downtown Zionsville.

Price said that many Village residents have expressed support for the project, and he let residents of the nine inhabited homes in the trailer park know that his long-term plans were to redevelop the land. Although they have known for years that a change was likely coming, many of the trailer park’s residents will face an uncertain future if forced to move, according to Randall Whipple, who has lived in the park for 13 years.

“If we lose our trailers, we lose our jobs, our home, everything we have up here, because we can’t really afford to live anywhere else in Zionsville,” he said. “I work part-time up here, but it won’t be worth it to drive to the city or

wherever I happen to move to.”

Trailer park residents have been told they will be given 120 days to relocate if plans for The Cove are approved. Whipple said he doesn’t know where he’ll end up, because his trailer is too old to move.

“Four months is not a whole long time to get out for some people. We’re not like a lot of the regular Zionsville people who have money.

We don’t really have much money,” he said.

“It’s going to cost to move. You’ve got to find a place. You’ve got to pay to get your stuff moved.”

Price said that in addition to the 120-day notice, there will be a “planned transition” to assist the residents, but he did not share details, in part to respect the residents’ privacy.

“Everyone I’ve talked to agrees that the status quo isn’t good for anyone,” he said. “Hopefully, along with the development pattern that (The Cove) establishes in that part of the Village, which is a lower intensity, residentially focused neighborhood, I think it also improves current conditions. Of course, there certainly would need to be a plan for the individuals that reside there who have benefited from a longstanding but very unusual living arrangement in the Village.”

The Town of Zionsville recently spent $36,500 to assist several residents forced to move out of the Zionsville Mobile Home Park on CR E. 600 S. If The Cove development moves forward, the town might also provide assistance to those who qualify. The plan commission will discuss rezoning of the land at 7 p.m. Aug. 21.

ZIONSVILLE Construction is under way for a roundabout at the CONSTRUCTION intersection of Ford and Mulberry roads. The intersection is expected to remain open throughout most of the project, but some temporary closures or lane restrictions could be in place. The roundabout is expected to be complete in September.

The Oak Street rehabilitation project is expected to continue through midAugust. This week, contractors are expected to complete the milling and re-surfacing of First Street and Sycamore Street.

CARMEL The intersection of Towne Road and 116th Street is closed for 45 days for the construction of a two-lane roundabout. It is expected to reopen on or after Sept. 13. Motorists traveling north on Towne Road will be detoured west along 126th Street to Shelborne Road, and traffic heading south will be directed to 106th Street by way of Ditch or Shelborne roads. East and westbound motorists will be detoured along Ditch Road and Shelborne Road.

Spring Mill Road is closed south of the Main Street roundabout to 116th Street except for local traffic. Motorists are encouraged to use Illinois Street as a detour. The closure is expected to last until fall.

Dispatches Sidewalk to reopen — The sidewalk off the Zionsville Town Hall parking lot with access to the Big-4 Rail Trail is expected to reopen Aug. 11. The closure has allowed construction crews to work on the parking lot. Big-4 Rail Trail users are asked to use other means to access the Trail.

Silent auction items sought — The Zionsville Lions Club is seeking items for the eighth annual silent auction to be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 9 during the Fall Festival. Acceptable items include new or gently used household goods, memorabilia, gift baskets, gift certificates, crafts and more. Items are due by Aug. 26 and may be dropped off at Carpenter Realtors, 5 N. Library prepares for eclipse

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com When a total solar eclipse spans North America Aug. 21, the HusseyMayfield Memorial Public science Library wants residents to be prepared.

The library will receive 1,000 special glasses approved for viewing the eclipse thanks to a grant from STAR_Net, Science-Technology Activities and Resources for Libraries, part of the Space Science Institute’s National Center for Interactive Learning. The glasses have a filter approved for looking directly at the sun. Viewing with regular sunglasses or the naked eye can cause permanent damage to the retina.

Some of the free glasses will be donated to schools, and a portion are for those registered for the library’s eclipse-related educational programs.

The remainder will be distributed at the library beginning Aug. 10.

“I think we could have given away 1,000 more,” said children’s librarian Julie Myers, who submitted the grant request.

Myers encourages visitors to come by the library the day of the eclipse to watch a special Eclipse Megamovie from 2 to 4 p.m. as images taken during the eclipse are shared by Google and UC Berkeley.

“I think this is a really fun way to bring education to life,” Myers said.

“It doesn’t happen very often, so it’s special. It really fits with our goal of lifelong learning.”

Even before she moved to Zionsville in 1995, Jean Apple was part of the community.

She was one of the original profile members of the Off-Main Street Players when they began in a Raintree-area barn in the 1960s. She later volunteered at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center before finding a home on Maple Street in the Village.

Within a year of becoming an official resident, Apple and neighbor Jean Phillippe decided to start the Village Residents Association to give people in the village the same voice and unification that they witnessed with surrounding subdivisions.

Phillippe made it clear that she didn’t want to lead the VRA but simply wanted to help with the initial preparations.

So when the time came to appoint the association’s first president, Apple was the one to step forward. Twenty years later she looked back fondly on her early days in Zionsville.

“I’m proud of what we created,” she said.

Her work with the VRA led to an appointment to several other boards and committees.

Her accomplishments were recognized by the town council July 17 when Mayor Tim Haak declared it “Jean Apple Day.” Apple left Zionsville at the end of July to be closer to her family in Nevada but left behind many friends and who have fond memories of her impact in the community.

“Her many contributions are being seen today because of her forward thinking,” Zionsville resident Jan Stacey said.

ZCHS grad coaching at Stanford

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Dylan Sorensen has spent two-plus years focusing on making the U.S. Olympic Triathlon team in 2020. sports The 2009 Zionsville Community High School graduate still has that goal, but his main focus has shifted significantly.

In July, Sorensen joined the Stanford University staff as an assistant men’s distance coach working with the distance runners for cross country and track and field.

“Coaching will be my No. 1 priority, but the facilities there are unmatched, the weather is phenomenal year-round and I will certainly stay in shape,” Sorenson said.

“That’s definitely a goal I want to accomplish. My race schedule, for my own sake, will revolve around the meets that my guys will be in.”

Sorensen, 27, was a two-time All-American in the steeplechase at Georgetown University. Sorensen said while competing at Georgetown, he helped a lot with the recruiting aspect and has always been interested in coaching.

great part of the team and integrate well with the culture that is established there,” Sorensen said. “Not every kid is the right fit for Stanford, but if they are a great student academically and also a humble but talented athlete, then those are the kind of kids we look for.”

Sorensen was recruited by the Olympic Development team after completing his Georgetown career in 2014. Although he attempted, Sorensen knew making the 2016 Olympic Triathlon team was a long shot because he needed to sharpen his swimming skills. Prior to taking the Stanford post, Sorensen had been working for Major League Triathlon, a professional league.

Foodie Fridays raise funds

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Boy Scout Troop 804 and the Zionsville American Legion have partnered to create Foodie Fridays to benevent efit both organizations.

“We’re trying to make it a community-based event with food trucks and family friendly activities,” Troop 804 Scoutmaster Greg Hoyes said.

The event is from 5 to 9 p.m. on the third Friday of the month at the Zionsville American Legion, 9950 E 600 S. “We modeled this event after the First Friday food truck event down in Indianapolis,” Hoyes said.

Games include corn hole, ladder ball, ring toss, washer toss and bubbles for smaller children.

Participating food trucks have included Groovy Guys Fries, Wild Boar BBQ, Pi Indy and the Pink Walrus.

The cost is $5 to attend. Kids 12 and younger are admitted free. Food is an additional cost. Bring cash for entrance fee and drinks. Food trucks accept credit and debit cards.

and then you buy the food from the food truck,” Hoyes said.

Funds raised go toward the operating costs for Troop 804 and the Zionsville American Legion.

“The funds will go toward things the troop needs, like a new trailer, equipment, tents, stoves, things like that,” Hoyes said.

The event will happen rain or shine. Hoyes wants to grow the event in the future.

Parking is available at Zionsville American Legion, with overflow parking available at Christ Lutheran Church.

Golf kept centenarian young

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com To Charlie Schweitzer, his secret to longevity is simple.

“I played a lot of golf,” birthday said Schweitzer, who turns 100 Aug. 8.

And he does mean a lot of golf, traveling all around the world to play.

“I played four or five times during a week when my wife died, because I didn’t have much to do,” said Schweitzer, whose wife, Dorothy, died in 1986.

The Barrington of Carmel assisted living resident played his last round of golf at 97.

“I tried to hit some balls a few months ago and I fell and ended up with a sore shoulder,” Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer, who had a seven-handicap in his prime, was a member of Ulen Country Club in Lebanon for 50 years. Schweitzer belonged to a golfing group called the Eastern Seniors.

“I did a lot of traveling playing courses all over, like Pebble Beach (Calif.) and in Australia,” Schweitzer said.

The World War II veteran served as a radio operator for 39 months in the U.S. Army’s 349th Infantry Division.

“I got tossed out of a Jeep and had to go to the hospital in Rome,” Schweitzer said.

Schweitzer retired from RCA after 45 years in 1980, having moved to Indianapolis from New Jersey in 1960.

His son Ken, 66, lives in Carmel with his wife, Mary Lou, and owns Carmel Glass & Mirror.

His oldest child is Linda Elliott, 74, a Zionsville resident. His sons, David, 73, and Don, 57, and daughter, Helen Bower, 70, live in Indianapolis.

Schweitzer smoked until he was 90, then gave it up.

“That helped me get to where I am,” he said.

There will be a party celebrating Schweitzer’s birthday at The Barrington of Carmel’s assisted living facility from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12.

During the week of July 31, Up with People staff members arrived in Zionsville to begin recruiting host families, organizing community service projects and promoting the upcoming Up with People performances. Cast members will arrive in Zionsville the week of Aug. 28.

Up with People, a nonprofit organization, inspires young people to make a difference in the world through an immersive global education, service leadership and performing arts program. Cast members, ranging from 17 to 29 years old, participate in a sixmonth multi-continental tour.

During their stay, cast members will host a culture fair, schedule mini-performances and previews and provide community service. Their visit will culminate with two live performances at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center Sept. 1 and 2.

More than 80 children heard Gregory explain atmospheric pressure then saw it illustrated by watching an egg sucked into a bottle. Education specialists Ian Morris and Sam Ansaldi with IUPUI’s Center for Earth and Environmental Science brought tools from Duke Energy’s interactive mobile lab to help the children understand how tornadoes are formed and how quickly they can dissipate. The survey will be available through Aug. 20. It asks customers how they use the website, the ease of searching for information and what features are important.

“We’re ready to get on this project,” HMMPL Marketing Director Virginia Hilbert said. “This is going to be a long process.”

The library is planning to hire a website design group for development. Website upkeep will be managed by library staff.

“The design firm is going to help us create a website that’s customer-focused and customer-friendly, so when somebody visits our website they’re going to immediately see the option they’re looking for,” Hilbert said. “We don’t want them to have to search.”

The current website will receive a complete overhaul. Hilbert said previous surveys and comments have shown the top customer needs are accessing library accounts from home, searching for materials, scheduling events and downloading reading materials.

According to Hilbert, the website was updated a few years ago in an effort to simplify online resources, but there’s a need to rework the format.

“It’s just time,” she said. “Technology advances so quickly, we see the need to try to stay up to date.”

Hilbert said the goal is to complete the new site by the end of 2017.

Love INC connects churches to assist Boone County residents in tough times

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com More than a decade ago when Dean DeVries was a pastor at a Lebanon church, he began to wonder if the aid he was giving to those in need cover story was really helping.

He read about an organization, Love In the Name of Christ, that helps churches collaborate to assist the community and ensure those who truly needed help were getting it versus those who might take advantage of churches.

“It just made sense to have a central office as a hub for the churches,” he said. “It touched a nerve. Everyone had faced the same problem.”

A task force of ministers gathered in 2005 with an interest in bringing Love INC to Boone County. They started with 17 church partners, and today 36 churches are involved as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their first board meeting this year.

Churches refer those in need to Love INC to undergo an interview process, which helps verify individual needs and provide encouragement. Those in need are called “neighbors.”

as ourself,” said Barry Weaver, chairman of the board for Love INC of Boone County.

Needs can range from toothbrushes to washing machines. The goal is to make items available to help fill a gap so that those in need have the financial resources to pay bills and rent. Love INC does not provide monetary donations.

Love INC directs neighbors in Boone County to specific churches that can meet their needs through “GAP” ministries — God Always Provides — in the form of linen and clothing closets and food pantries.

“What’s great about it is the sky is the limit in terms of what people need,” said DeVries, who serves as vice chairman of the board.

A partner church includes Zionsville United Methodist’s Kids Kloset, which offers clothing for youth.

Several years ago the Love INC board added transformational ministry, a series of free community classes, for the neighbors. Classes are taught by volunteers and cover finances, boundaries and affirming potential.

“A lot of times people haven’t been told that they’re valued by God and that there is hope in this world,” Weaver said. “It all comes down to truly trying to help rather than just giving stuff away.”

“The win is to see the neighbors on their own and to be involved with a church,” DeVries said.

Love INC also benefits from Growing Hope, an annual harvest from land donated by farmers in the county. Three years ago a Lebanon farmer donated a portion of his land to plant soybeans, with the harvest’s proceeds dedicated to Love INC’s transformational ministry program. This summer, 31 acres will be planted in the Thorntown area. Seed, fertilizer and fuel are all donated.

In February, the Love INC board eliminated the position of finanical director because of financial concerns. Finances of the organization peaked in 2014 but dropped the last two years.

“We needed to get our budget down to where we wouldn’t have to cut programs,” Weaver said.

The board has assumed the executive director’s duties in conjunction with three full-time and one part-time staff member.

“We’re a working board, we’re not just a governing board,” Weaver said. “Most of our board members were already involved in ministry.”

“The nuts and bolts haven’t changed,” DeVries said. “Letting the director go, we

didn’t lose a beat on the ministry.”

Both DeVries and Weaver are optimistic about the direction of Love INC and the partner churches.

Love INC has expanded from a small location inside a former school to an 8,000-square-foot former pole barn with room for donations that include furniture, clothing, toiletries, kitchen wares and working appliances.

“We had a 20-by-20 building,” DeVries said. “That’s where it started. Even from the beginning, when I announced this as one pastor, the interest just grew. I know God’s got his hand on this ministry.”

Commentary by Terry Anker At the turn of the 20th century, our own Hoosier state could claim one of its own as the sitting U.S. vice president. Interestingly, Charles Fairbanks could walk only two blocks to visit his friend, former President Benjamin Harrison. The streets of our state’s capitol were crowded with almost 160,000 citizens with new building projects already underway, inviting many more to join. Civic leaders had made impressive steps in the few decades since the war.

And their aspirations for what Indiana could become were unbounded.

With the celebration of our 200th birthday now behind us, Indiana is once again in a forward-looking posture. Hoosiers are notable in Washington. We have sent another son to serve as vice president, and with him have gone many Indiana men and women.

So, come now the Sagamore Institute, our home-grown international think tank, to host Centennial Spirit. On Aug. 12, on the grounds of the Levy Mansion on North Meridian Street, as Dr. John Wernert, its vice president points out, “re-enactors and professional historians will discuss the importance of this era of Indiana citizenship.” Current Gov. Eric Holcomb will host the inaugural pinning of members of the “Society of Sagamores,” recognizing living recipients of our state’s high civilian honor, the Sagamore of the Wabash. Finally back to sailing Commentary by Ward Degler It was perfect sailing weather. The weekend finally brought two days of blue skies, puffy sumplain talk mertime clouds, temps in the upper 70s and a light breeze. It was sheer bliss after uncountable days of unspeakable deluge and drear.

To be fair, the rain did generate prizewinning gardens. And weeds, of course — I found one crabgrass plant that was bigger than my wife’s Buick.

Meanwhile, my little sailboat has waited patiently in the back yard. Then came Sunday. I hooked up the boat and pulled it out of the resting place where it had been sitting for months.

Vines had grown up around the wheels. Carpenter ants had made nests in the sail locker. The tires were nearly flat. Accumulated grime made it hard to tell what color it was.

Air in the tires, an eviction notice to the ants and a good washdown put the old girl back to shipshape and Bristolfashion condition, as my Bostonian grandmother used to say.

Out on the water my granddaughter and I pointed the boat toward the north end of the lake and relaxed while the wind pushed the little boat luxuriously

through the water. Then came the ants.

My guess was they had been living under the boat. I suppose ants just naturally get testy when you try to drown them. Once inside the boat they began exacting revenge.

We won the war, of course, but not before we were covered with itchy, burning bites. It reminded me of my first encounter with fire ants in Florida, an experience that was as embarrassing as it was painful. Let’s just say escaping the ants resulted in getting caught with my pants down while being chased by an angry alligator.

After two trips across the lake, we headed for the dock, ready to call it a day. That’s when the wind died, the sun got hot and we remembered our extra water bottles were in the car.

When the boat was out of the water and strapped down for the trip home, my granddaughter and I looked at each other. We were miserable, dripping with sweat and puffy with bites. Would she ever go sailing again?

“How about next weekend?” she asked with a smile.

Oh. My. God. I’m down to my last four days of summer vacation and I’m starting to panic. Where did the humor time go? What happened to my grand plans for bingewatching “ONB,” “Master of None,” “West World” and “House of Cards?” What about my goal to return to school with at least the hint of a tan? Why are there still four home-improvement projects sitting in my garage, including a half-painted bead board and a discarded trellis I picked up curbside?

Where did my acclaimed time-management skills disappear to these last few months?

Are they hiding with my skin’s supposed supply of melanin?

I know for those of you who work yearround or have young kids at home, June and July are just two more months to sweat through, but for teachers, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that these long days are much-needed for rest, rejuvenation and rediscovery of sanity.

And when we have to turn the calendar page to August, it’s like mourning the end of “Breaking Bad.” We’re privileged to have been a part, and know there will be other shows that are just as good, but we’ll spend a solid week moping about in a world without Jesse Pinkman.

That being said, my summer has been good, filled with travel, family and sleep.

And despite my subpar performance at meeting my proposed Netflix quota, Doo and I did manage to catch up on “Turn,” finish “Bloodline” and get deliciously back into “Game of Thrones.” Perhaps that’s why the thought of school starting is skyrocketing my BP. Great summer breaks are that much harder to see end.

Sitting pretty Commentary by Dick Wolfsie What has happened to the art of sitting?

People nowadays don’t just sit; they have to be doing something. humor When I was young, people in my New York City suburb sat on their front porch, but they were mostly protecting their valuables or waiting for the police to arrive.

English manors had sitting rooms. People did a lot of yakking to each other while they were sitting, conversing about the murder that just occurred in the garden or speculating about why the downstairs maid was spending so much time upstairs.

These were talking rooms, not sitting rooms.

Sitting isn’t wasting time: It’s how lazy people have made their impact. Hard-working folks didn’t come up with the idea for the backhoe, the chainsaw and the snow blower. No, it was the sluggish and indolent solving the world’s problems while completely at rest.

Cracker Barrel Restaurant has tried to bring back sitting as an art form, lining their front porches with sturdy rocking chairs. Instead of sitting in them, though,

people are staring at the price tags or complaining about the 30-minute wait for the meatloaf special. Many Cracker Barrel customers sport suspenders and dangle toothpicks from their mouths. This is sit waiting to happen.

Part of the charm of sitting on a porch is publicly displaying that you have the time to just park your rear in a chair. No bills to pay, chores to do or places to go.

Sometimes, I sit in my driveway in a beach chair and wait for my wife to get home. When my neighbor Charlie sees me, he grabs a stool from his garage and plants himself next to me. Then he wants to chat endlessly about politics. Lately, I’ve mustered up the nerve to tell Charlie I’d rather be alone.

Some people just don’t sit well with me.

Extended-stay hotel coming

Whitestown’s first extended-stay hotel could open by next year. The 122-room WoodSpring Suites in whitestown the Anson development near I-65 and Whitestown Parkway started construction late last month and is set to be complete by 2018. It will be the third hotel for the Whitestown area. “The free market, not government, chooses which specific businesses make a decision to take a risk and invest in a certain area,� said Dax Norton, Whitestown town manager. “I’m confident the business owners and corporations do sufficient market research to ensure their business will succeed before investing millions. The hotel owners must feel certain that Whitestown can support another hotel or they wouldn’t invest in building it here.�

Dale Johns, president of Loftus Robinson Hotels, the developer of the site, said the $7.7 million hotel will serve the needs of customers not currently served in the market. “This hotel is designed to welcome

guests that are in town for a longer period of time and provide the comforts of home, such as larger rooms, a kitchenette and onsite laundry,� Johns said. “Whitestown has been the fastest growing community in the state for six years now and shows no signs of slowing down. It is also the second largest industrial area near Indianapolis. With all that growth, an extended-stay hotel is needed to support both the residential and business communities.�

The addition of the WoodSpring Suites is among several new developments in Whitestown. It’s growth that Norton said doesn’t just happen, but takes residential growth and “years of planning and a commitment to excellence to bring about a change that’s both purposeful and relevant.�

OMS Partners received approval from the Zionsville Plan Commission to build a 7,000-square-foot commercial building at 12036 N. Michigan Road.

Dawn to Dusk Daycare received approval from the Zionsville Plan Commission for a 480-square-foot expansion of its existing structure at 11706 N. Michigan Road.

Spohn Associates is seeking approval to build a 30,000-square-foot new commercial building at 10650 Bennett Parkway.

Rainbow Child Care Center of Zionsville opened on Aug. 7 at 7061 E. Whitestown Parkway in Whitestown. It’s the center’s 16th location, and it will serve children age six weeks to 12 years old.

The Shoppes of Whitestown is expected to break ground on a $50 million shopping complex project by RealtyLink in September. The development will be built on 33 acres east of Interstate 65 and exit 130 that has been designated for retail since 2004.

The closure of the Marsh store in Boone Village has led merchants in the plaza to come up with innovative ways to continue to provide customers the opportunity to boone village purchase fresh produce and other goods.

Farmer Albert Lewis operates a produce stand seven days a week, offering anything from melons to sweet corn to tomatoes. Lewis opens at 10 a.m. and stays open until 7 p.m., unless he sells out first.

“Marsh was an anchor in the shopping center. We would see people get groceries (at Marsh) and then come get fertilizer or oil for the car, etc., so we have seen a decrease, and it’s created its own set of challenges,” said Leigh Ann Akard of Akard Hardware.

“I think (the produce stand) has helped. We see people walking in with fresh produce or they come in and thank us because they can get what they need still.”

But that’s not all. A Wednesday night Pop-Up Farmers Market started in July and will run through Sept. 27. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m.

“We called and talked with the organizer of the Zionsville Farmers Market and wanted to work together with them. They’ve been advising us on how to do this and we agreed offering this on Wednesdays was a great alternative,” Akard said. “I never have the opportunity to go to the Saturday morning market because when it opens at 8 (a.m.), so does the hardware store, and in talking to other merchants they said the same thing.”

The first week of the market featured 14 vendors, including local handmade offerings ranging from jewelry to natural cleaning products.

Traders Point Christian Church wants to offer a sense of community centered around total body health. fitness For 20 years it has offered fitness classes for Whitestown and Zionsville residents. There are eight different classes taught by volunteer instructors.

“At TPCC we really want our church building to be used by the community that makes it a normal place to hang out,” said Erica Thomas, communications director.

“We have a park that is an indoor playground. We have different Bible studies and group meetings. We host guest speakers.

Fitness is another extension.”

Classes are $2 per session or $13 per month for unlimited sessions.

“It’s been a really awesome sense of community for people. It’s definitely a great group of people who gather to focus on their whole self,” Thomas said.

“We don’t want to focus on just providing for people in the community financially, tangibly or through spiritual development,” she said. “It’s more of valuing the whole person. It’s a part of our development and growth.”

“We don’t want those real-life circumstances like finances or child care to be a reason for them not to participate. We try to keep it affordable so that more people can come. We feel like it’s a really awesome thing to offer the community,” Thomas said.

Participants do not have to attend TPCC to participate in classes.

“We have a lot of people who come who aren’t members of the church,” Thomas said. “The people that keep coming back just enjoy being together. They look forward to the classes.”

Celebration of Bands set for Aug. 18-19

The third version of Carmel Celebration of Bands will feature four new groups along with two new venues. music Because of construction, the downtown Carmel portion of the free concerts has been moved to the 100 block of Second Avenue NW between Bub’s and Scotty’s Brewhouse. The performances start at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 downtown and returning there at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 19. Tom O’Brien is a presenting sponsor.

“I think we’ll be able to put in as many people as we were at the other place,” said Charlie Conrad, Indiana Wind Symphony founder and musical director.

IWS is founding host of the two-day event.

The first five bands will play inside The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts, starting at noon Aug. 19. Previously, it had been held at The Palladium.

“They are changing the configuration of The Palladium around for the Gala so we

play a variety of jazz.”

Artomobilia roars into Carmel Aug. 26

“I think we started off with 42 cars cars,” event director and founder John Leonard said. “Over the years as the Carmel Arts & Design District has grown and blossomed, our event has as well. This year we’ll have 438 cars. We’ve got more sponsors and support from the community than we’ve ever had. We’re going to have a great event.”

The IU Health North Carmel Artomobilia is set for noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Main Street and Range Line Road. ADESA is a presenting sponsor.

“We’ve maxed out the capacity, so what we’re looking forward to is Monon Boulevard being put in place. Perhaps we can take advantage of that in future years,” Leonard said. “Rather than looking at how we can add more cars because we’re at capacity is how we can add cars that are more interesting, more unique, nicer

cars. We’ve seen the quantity has sort of plateaued because of the real estate. The quality continues to increase.”

Leonard said there will be several body styles of Camaros.

“We’ll have a collection of Camaros that are coming from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum,” he said.

There will be a collection of cars called RestoMod, restoration plus modern parts/ technology.

Troy Trepanier, a nationally recognized

custom car builder, will help judge the RestoMod Class.

Leonard said the event has had several cars that have been winners at prestigious car shows. Leonard wants to make it an even bigger event to draw more visitors from surrounding states.

“That’s why we added the Fuelicious event a few years ago,” Leonard said. “The combination of the two events gives us a broader reach of people that will come from St. Louis, Chicago and Louisville. They’ll come for a variety of things to do. We’re conscious people want a great experience.

We’re growing the number of events in the future.”

Fuelicious, an Indiana Children’s Wish Fund fundraiser featuring 50 distinct collector cars, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Aug. 25 at Lucas Estate in Carmel.

Artomobilia and Hoosier Salon have partnered to feature a plein air paint-out.

When to upgrade your van Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt It stinks getting tripped up by words, especially words which are practically identical. It’s like trying to grammar guy distinguish between a set of twins who look exactly the same, except that one of them has a birthmark on the underside of his right pinky toe. This seems to be the case with long-lost word siblings then and than.

An easy way to remember when it’s appropriate to use then is: then = when. As a general rule, you can use then as an adverb or an adjective with any sentence that has to do with time, what comes next, or what used to be. For instance, use then to replace at that time: I called you five minutes ago. Were you asleep then? In addition, use then to imply the next in time, space or order: First we will eat tacos, and then we’ll dance in the fountain. Then can also be a substitute for words like accordingly or in that case: If you provoke that angry jellyfish, then you will probably get stung.

Remember, then = when.

Although than looks eerily similar to then,

its purpose is different. If then = when, then than = van. Allow me to explain: Do you or does someone you know own a minivan?

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a van owner inspect someone else’s van in order to compare each other’s vans. For example: Wow, Dave, your van has dual DVD players in the back seat; your van is way cooler than mine. Than is used as a conjunction any time you’re making a comparison, as van owners often do: You didn’t get the heated leather seats? Mine is clearly better than yours. Remember, than = van.

The treasures of Memphis

Commentary by Don Knebel

Visitors to Egypt often find their way to Saqqara and the famous stepped pyramid of Djoser, the forerunner of the travel Great Pyramids. Many of them miss the treasures of Memphis just to the east.

Memphis, situated on the west bank of the Nile River, became the first capital of a united Egypt in about 3000 B.C. and developed into a major port city. Ptah, the god of creation, protected the city from his temple in the center. The name of Ptah’s magnificent temple, rendered in Greek, provided the name “Egypt” for the entire nation.

After the Greek pharaohs established Alexandria in the fourth century A.D., Memphis began a slow decline and eventually fell into ruins. Ninth century Egyptian rulers used some of the rubble in constructing Cairo, about 12 miles to the north. Much of what remained found its way to museums around the world.

Some items surviving from the glory days of Memphis and its temple of Ptah have been collected in an open-air museum

in the village of Mit Rahina, near Saqqara.

A 90-ton carved sphinx, probably honoring Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female pharaoh, is the largest alabaster sculpture ever found.

The most popular item is an enormous statue of Ramses II, who ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 B.C. and is often considered the pharaoh of the Biblical Exodus. The intricately carved statue is almost 34 feet tall, without its missing lower legs and feet.

Upon its discovery in 1820, the colossus was offered to the British Museum, which rejected it because of the huge costs of transporting it to London. Today, the statue lies on its back in an enclosure designed especially for it. Another large statue of Ramses II, once outside the temple of Ptah, stands erect nearby.

If you get to Saqqara, don’t overlook the open-air museum of Memphis.
