Boone County residents living in District 1 (Eagle Township) will have three choices when voting for Boone County Council in November. Russell Mueller is running as a libertarian candidate.

GOVERNMENT Libertarians share ideas from Democrats and Republicans with a focus on individual sovereignty.

“I’m running as a third-party candidate, a Libertarian, because I feel like a lot of people are upset over the whole two-party system,” Mueller said. “I know I myself am. Why not run with a party I have an interest in and can get behind and present another option.”

The council’s duties include establishing and approving an annual operating budget; establishing salaries, wages, per diMueller ems and other compensation for all county officials and employees; fixing tax rates; appropriating public funds; authorizing certain purchases or sales of county-owned land; and reviewing budgets for certain non-elected boards in the county.

“If I’m elected, I hope to help monitor the budget,” Mueller said. “I know taxes have been on the rise in Boone County for a while now. I want to find ways we can mitigate any unnecessary spending and better re-allocate resources, that way we keep taxes down. I want to help make Boone County government a little more efficient.”

Mueller works as an environmental consultant and feels that role would help his decision-making.

“I’ve been a part of politics off and on throughout my life,” Mueller said. “I was a part of Young Americans for Liberty in college. I’ve helped out with some campaigns. I work in a field where I deal with government compliance and helping companies with different compliance needs. I’m very aware of law. The reason I’m running is that I care deeply about Boone County.”

Blattner declined to say whether he has been teaching children while under pending investigation for sexual molestation of a minor, but parents of students at the studio have confirmed that he was actively conducting private lessons with minors until July 27.

Boone County Prosecutor Kent Eastwood said there is no law that prevents persons with pending sex crime allegations from interacting with children.

“It’s up to (the business), since it’s a private company,” Eastwood said. “Unfortunately, since he posted his full bond, we can’t tell him what to do.”

Student reflects on day as mayor

One young Zionsville citizen gained a new perspective on his city last month.

Beckett Suh, a fifth-gradTOWN HALL er at Zionsville West Middle School, spent June 27 as Mayor of Zionsville for the day. The opportunity arose at the Zionsville Education Foundation’s Barn Bash Fundraiser, where families could bid on a “Mayor for the Day” auction item.

According to Suh’s mother, Andrea Suh, bidding was an obvious choice because Beckett had expressed curiosity about what the mayor of Zionsville did on the job.

While serving as mayor, Beckett spent time with Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak. Beckett said he was surprised by how much time he got to spend traveling around Zionsville with Haak.

“I thought it would be all meetings, but a lot of the time we got to drive around and check on things. I saw new neighborhoods and parks that were developing,” Beckett said.

For Beckett, the highlight of the day was a visit to the local police station, where he

More than 1,000 people representing various faiths and walks of life packed into the synagogue for a solidarity gathering July 30 to show their support two days after Nazi symbols were discovered spraypainted on a dumpster enclosure behind the building.

“I want stronger bonds with all of our community, and I want it to be a two-way street,” Freedman said.

Speakers and attendees included synagogue officials, leaders from other religious communities and politicians.

Freedman said event planners anticipated anywhere from 50 to 200 guests and were amazed by the response.

Competition connects community news@currentinzionsville.com On July 28, Zionsville Community Schools hosted a community challenge to bring together local groups to support SCHOOL the Strong in Every Way initiative. Strong in Every Way is a ZCS district-wide campaign launched in 2016 to ensure optimum growth, resilience and depth of understanding for all ZCS students.

The community-building event was open

to any groups in Zionsville of any size.

Teams were separated into divisions and smaller groups were combined to level the playing field. Anyone 5 and up could participate.

During the competition, team members rotated through a variety of events, including cornhole, kickball, volleyball and an inner tube relay race. The competition ended with a tug-of-war challenge.

Water lilies brighten busy area

By Heather Lusk news@currentinzionsville.com Each year in the middle of summer, hundreds of pink and white water lilies cover a small retention pond near the intersection of Oak Street and Ford LANDSCAPING Road.

“It looks like an impressionist painting,” Zionsville resident Amanda Cooper said. “It’s such a teeny drop of peaceful beauty in the midst of that super-busy intersection. I’m always happy every summer when I see that.”

The lilies were planted when the property was developed by Kosene & Kosene nearly three decades ago.

When Gerry Kosene and his brother, David, began to develop the property 28 years ago, they agreed that landscaping would be an important factor.

“We wanted it to be as attractive as a shopping center could be,” Gerry Kosene said. “As real estate developers, we do care about what we create.”

Landscaping and waterscaping are elements of most Kosene & Kosene properties.

“We wanted to do something that was attractive, that would be a centerpiece, eye-

catching and yet be functional and create a nice habitat,” Kosene said.

The brothers selected giant water lilies that thrive in full sunlight. The lilies require cutting back or, as Kosene noted, they will take over.

“In some cases we pull them out by their roots,” Kosene said. “We’ve always tried to keep it looking fresh and attractive for the community.”

Minimizing landscaping expenses is one way some developers save money on projects, but it’s not the direction Kosene takes.

“It has to be a part of the fabric of the community, and it should look nice,” Kosene said.

“It’s one of those special things about Zionsville, those little hidden gems,” Cooper said.

Special Olympics softball team to compete in sectionals

By Maria Cook news@currentinzionsville.com Special Olympics Boone County offers athletes with developmental and physical disabilities a chance to SPORTS improve their skills and play competitively in several sports, including softball. The softball program runs from June through late September.

Lebanon resident Terri Noffke is the county coordinator for Special Olympics Boone County. Noffke said about 50 athletes participate in the softball program each year.

“Boone County has three teams this year,” Noffke Noffke said. “We have two designated pitcher teams. Those are teams where coaches pitch to their own players. This is our first year to have a Unified Traditional Team. Unified means the team is comprised of Special Olympics athletes and partner athletes. Some of the partners are from the Boone County Sheriff’s (Office) and the Lebanon Police Dept. Other partners are friends and family members of our athletes.”

According to Noffke, SOBC’s traditional team practices at Abner Longley Southside Park in Lebanon, while the designated pitcher teams practice at the Lebanon Little League diamonds. All teams participate in the Indy Parks League, competing in games throughout the Indianapolis area. Sectionals are Aug. 18, and qualifying teams advance to

nities as well as a festival with booths and activities. Volunteers will be able to participate in a stream cleanup and learn about the history and importance of Eagle Creek.

Gavin Merriman, an assistant superintendent at the Zionsville Street and Stormwater Dept., said Creekfest is a “festival with a purpose” because the goal is to teach people the importance of clean, healthy waterways.

“We wanted to provide opportunities for people of all ages and interests to celebrate Eagle Creek and our other precious water resources through stewardship, education and recreation,” Merrimen said. “The purpose of Creekfest is to help keep our waterways clean and to promote water quality awareness in Zionsville.”

This year’s celebration will include kayak and fishing demonstrations, a creekstomp that gives kids a chance to wade in Eagle Creek and musical entertainment provided by the Dumpster Drummers. At 12:30 p.m., a rubber duck race will take place. Participants can pay $1 to decorate a duck and race it down the creek. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

Merriman cautioned that parking may be limited at Elm Street Green, so festivalgoers may want to consider carpooling, walking, biking or paddling to Creekfest.

Creekfest began in 2013, when Zionsville resident and fishing enthusiast Todd Settle approached the city to organize a stream cleanup. The event expanded and was officially dubbed “Creekfest” in 2015. Today, Creekfest is a partnership between the Zionsville Parks & Recreation Dept., the Zionsville Street & Stormwater Dept., Boone County Solid Waste Management District and the celebration’s founder, Settle.

‘It’s Out of whack’ Commentary by Ward Degler It was one day, years ago, when I was living on a farm in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant in Minnesota. I was PLAIN TALK watching a neighbor harvesting corn in the field behind my place when he suddenly stopped, got out of the cab with his toolbox and started working with the machinery.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“It’s out of whack,” he said, plying a wrench to several bolts that adjusted the machine.

“Oh,” I said, and let it go. He fiddled with it for a while, then, satisfied he had it fixed, got back in the cab and resumed harvesting his corn.

That was a long time ago, of course, but I’ve always wondered just what he meant when he said the machine was “out of whack.” What is whack, anyway, or where is it? And what does it mean to be out of it?

Early references tie it to the word wacky, which is what you get when you get whacked in the head. Others say it expresses the opposite of what the British refer to

as “being in sound whack,” or in fine fettle. I guess sound whack means things are working the way they’re supposed to.

Another source refers to the cost of something, full whack being the right price.

If it’s too expensive, it’s, well, out of whack.

Caribbean pirates talked about their portion of the booty as getting their whack.

To add to the confusion, Americans have added a totally different view of the word.

“I’ll take a whack at it” implies accepting responsibility for getting something done or making something work. Of course, if it’s out of whack then it probably doesn’t work after all.

Back on the farm, I watched my neighbor harvest row after row of corn and then suddenly stop again, jump out of the cab and go back to work on the adjustments.

“What’s wrong now?” I asked.

“It’s out of kilter,” he said.

Vape devices become sleeker as usage increases

By Heather Lusk • news@currentinzionsville.com One looks like a highlighter. Another like an iPod. They can be in the shape of lighters, a pack of gum or bracelets.

The devices are used for vaping, a COVER STORY method of inhaling vapor and nicotine and it is happening in Zionsville Community Schools. The vaping industry began in 2004 with the introduction of modern e-cigarettes and is expected to become a $23 billion industry by 2023.

Vaping and e-cigarette devices have become the No. 1 tobacco products used by teens in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. In 2017, 11.7 percent of high school students and 3.3 percent of middle school students reported using electronic cigarettes in the past 30 days.

“They look really sleek and they look really techie, but in particular they look so discrete,” said Claire Haughton, public health educator for the Boone County Health Dept.

Vape flavors like watermelon punch, sour worms and cotton candy make them even more appealing to youth. Devices such as JUUL have become popular products, which have the look of a flash drive and the ability to recharge through a computer’s USB port.

“A lot of schools are having problems with it because kids are using it in class or using it in the bathroom,” said Haughton, noting that students may exhale into their arm or into a shirt.

E-cigarettes and vaping materials are unregulated by the FDA. Even those without nicotine can still contain harmful chemicals.

Close to Home

Vaping is a relatively new concern in ZCS. During the 201617 school year, there were 10 suspensions involving vaping.

Last year, that number doubled.

ZCS Supt. Scott Robison said vaping is much easier to hide than cigarette smoking and speculated that it’s likely happening without detection.

“With a ‘hit’ from a vaping pen, Juul device, etc., taking less than a couple of seconds, it is extremely easy to conceal,” Robison said via email.

The fruity smell emitted from the devices can often be mistaken for gum or candy.

“The old version of the problem was smoking,” Robison said. “Vaping is just the new incarnation of the deadly habit of ingesting something into one’s lungs.”

What is vaping?

Electrical vaping devices consist of a mouthpiece, cartridge or refillable tank and a battery to heat it, which produces an aerosol.

“Just like an aerosol would be released from spray paint,” said Claire Haughton, public health educator for the Boone County Health Dept. “A really common misconception is that they just release water vapor,” Haughton noted that even aerosols without nicotine can still release dangerous chemicals, such as formaldehyde.

The cartridge or tank of e-juice, sometimes known as vaping juice, is filled with the flavored substance, plus chemicals like propylene glycol or glycerin, and often nicotine. Cartridges can have the look and appearance of a pack of gum, resulting in lawsuits and warnings from the FDA regarding similarities in packaging.

“We are seeing increased calls to poison control hotlines because little kids are (ingesting) these,” Haughton said. “It looks like candy, it smells like candy.”

Vaping initially became popular as an alternative to cigarettes. Murphy said she doesn’t discourage the use of vaping devices by adults who want to stop smoking, but notes it’s only a step in the right direction to break nicotine addiction.

For those looking for resources to stop tobacco use, a free hotline, 1-800-QUIT-NOW, provides individualized advice based on age and situation. Websites like QuitNow.net and TruthInitiative.org can also provide guidance and support.

The Boone County Health Dept. also offers periodic smoking cessation classes.

E-cigarettes were the most popular form of nicotine use

by Indiana youth in 2016, according to the CDC, but the current use is lower than the national average, with 2.8 percent of middle schoolers and 10.5 percent of high schoolers reporting e-cigarette use within the past 30 days. However, the percentage of Indiana adults who use e-cigarettes is higher than the national average, according to the CDC. Being able to purchase materials online without proof of age has allowed youth to obtain devices.

Addressing the issue

Although some vape juices are labeled nicotine-free, Haughton said many do contain the substance.

“We’ve seen that people who are exposed to nicotine are more likely to get addicted to different substances later in life,” Haughton said. “It’s hard to study the lifetime effects that (vaping) can have on a person when they really haven’t been around for a lifetime.”

E-cigarettes and vaping materials are unregulated by the FDA, compounding the problem. In 2016, the FDA announced that vaping products would come under the same scrutiny as cigarettes, but the deadline to request approval has been extended until 2022.

The Boone County Health Dept. supports raising the tobacco purchase age to 21, increasing tax on electronic products and implementing stronger rules for online purchases to help curb use by youths.

Because the devices are small and leave little evidence, sometimes parents may not realize they are being used. Unexplained scents, gadgets that look strange or don’t work, sensitivity to caffeine, increased thirst and nose bleeds can be indicators of vaping.

It’s important for families to have an open, non-judgmental conversation about vaping with their children, according to Haughton. Sharing the health risks through conversations or text is a way the CDC also suggests connecting with teens.

“There’s so much that we don’t know about them. It’s important to outline the health consequences,” Haughton said.

“It wasn’t too long ago that people thought that cigarettes were healthy.”

Fincerdoodle657 claims near omnipotent insight into world affairs. Likewise, Catlovesdog4528 knows the movement patterns of extraterrestrials across North America. Even more, BossaNovaHomer has mastered the irony of casting aspersions on someone for casting aspersions. Unidentified and unsolicited “comments” have proliferated on the digital streets of the modern media machine. With each internet article or blog post come countless retorts from those unwilling to put their actual names alongside their many opinions.

To wit, they push civil space to be anything but civil. In reaction, some good-intentioned, if a tad overzealous, among us are cutting free speech to the quick in an effort to put up some guardrails. Zero tolerance policies and expression laws of all sorts, marked by Byzantine rules and hopelessly inconsistent enforcement, leaves a chill over public discourse. Still, the intentionally disruptive manage to anonymously dump toxic waste into our public space without repercussion. The sewers of this internet overflow with secret and mislabeled opinion and diatribe of every sort.

Comedienne Roseanne Barr and pro athlete Colin Kaepernick stepped into the spotlight to publicly express their points of view, each for vastly different reasons. And to each, the world delivered a consequence.

Yet, their acts were undeniably their own.

Some 239 years ago, the founders of this nation chose likewise to sign their real names — many in bold, large letters — to a document demanding independence from, and incurring the wrath of, the world’s mightiest military power. In so doing, they took stunning risk and helped inspire countless others. Can Fincerdoodle657 do the same?

Summer colds are the worst. All I want to do is lie in bed wallowing in Netflix, Sudafed and self pity, but the stupid sunshine keeps mocking me: “It’s beautiful outHUMOR side! Come play! Or at least cut the grass!” Ugh. On a side note, I’m pretty sure my husband Doo infected me on purpose. He was sick last week and had to work while I slept late and wasted the day on Facebook, feeling absolutely fine. I know the irony of it drove him crazy. Had the tables been turned, I probably would have done the same thing, but I’m still aggravated.

At first, I tried to deny my illness, blaming the sneezing and watery eyes on allergies (never mind that I don’t have allergies, except a recent one to avocados, which I’m vehemently protesting). The next day the runny nose set up camp in my sinuses, and by the third morning, I was experiencing full-on headache and fatigue. I knew I was in bad shape when I tried to order photos at the nearby pharmacy, where I’d also pick up ginger ale and more drugs (I pride myself on efficiency, even in dark times).

I live within 2 miles of three different CVS stores, so when the cashier told me I was at the wrong place, I chalked it up to oversight. When the second store was also a no-go, I pulled up my email confirmation for the manager. She said, “You want East 126th. This is West 116th.” Jeeze-Louise, I wasn’t even on the right side of town! My 10-minute errand became a highly inefficient 45. In gorgeous weather.

Community should take heed with SROs Commentary by Caley Concannon In June, the Boone County Council unanimously approved funding to place school resource officers, SAFETY or SROs, in all Zionsville schools. The plan was put forward by Chief of Police Robert Knox and Sheriff Mike Nielsen and supported by Zionsville Schools Supt. Scott Robison and the school board.

As a mother of two young children in the district, I applaud the swift attention to the issue of school safety and especially the accompanying plan to offer better wrap-around mental health services at Zionsville Community Schools.

But as parents and community members, we should be cautious about the role of SROs in our schools, and even more importantly remember that “hardening” school measures like this will not solve our nation’s gun violence problem.

Disciplinary decisions should always stay with school administrators and not defer to SROs as recommended by the U.S. Dept. of Education. In reviewing the SRO training materials (offered as an additional 40 hours of instruction to law enforcement), I am encouraged to see attention paid to adolescent development, special needs and diversity/bias training, among other things.

Unfortunately, a big piece is missing from the SRO training, and it’s absolutely

essential to reducing gun deaths in our nation: Talking to kids and parents about gun access at home. SROs are in the perfect position to have this conversation on a continuing basis, knowing firsthand the risks of firearms as they develop mentoring relationships with kids at school.

They have a responsibility to lessen the cultural stigma around this subject and to treat responsible gun ownership and storage as a public safety issue and not just a personal decision.

Simply put, children should not have access to firearms at home, and SROs can help in spreading this message.

Every year, nearly 300 children unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else, and 500 more die by suicide with a gun. Of course, these numbers do not include the horrifying instances where a child uses a gun obtained at home in a school shooting, like what happened in Noblesville West Middle School May 25.

In 2018, America is sadly averaging more than one school shooting every week.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, of which I am a member and new Boone Co. chapter co-lead, has a wonderful program, called BeSMART, to help with the conversation on responsible gun ownership.

“What is this?” Mary Ellen asked me as she dangled a doodad in front of my face. It was small, plastic and had an HUMOR odd shape. “It looks like it goes to something,” she said. “Do you know what?”

“No clue,” I said.

“Put it somewhere. It looks important.”

“So, you want me to keep it because we don’t know what it is for?” I asked.

“Exactly.”

“But if we did know what it was for, we’d also keep it. So, I guess we keep everything.”

She said, “Don’t be silly ­— some things don’t go to anything. We can throw those things away. We should only keep things that look important.”

I stared at the thingamajig Mary Ellen unearthed. I was certain nothing in our house required anything quite like that. But there is only one way to be sure it was not important: Throw it away.

I had a small window of opportunity left to retrieve it, if necessary. It would be two days before the trash was picked up, enough time to rescue the thing when

I realized I had thrown away something important.

I heard the familiar sound of the garbage truck on Friday. Whatever that thing was, it was now gone forever. Just a matter of time before I found out what it was for. In fact, it was the very next day.

“Dick, I need that thingie I found last week. It’s the hook that attaches to the vacuum to wrap the cord around. Where is it?”

“At the city dump.”

“You threw that away? Didn’t you know it went to something?”

“Yes, I knew it went to something. I just didn’t know what it went to. So, I threw it away. That’s how you find out.”

Later that day, I removed my desk drawer and emptied the entire contents: wooden knobs, old keys, pen caps, dozens of multicolored plastic parts, metal gizmos and a rubber whatchamacallit. I threw them all out. Within days, I would know what each thing was for.

Cyclists to ride 100 miles for MS fundraiser

On Sept. 8, 300 cyclists will ride 100 miles in one day to raise $125,000 to make a difference in the PHILANTHROPY lives of people affected by multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body.

The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person are unpredicatable but can include blindness and paralysis. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide, more often women.

Bike MS: Cruisin’ the Crossroads, presented by Salesforce, will depart from the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds, 1300 100 South in Lebanon. The route ends back in Lebanon, taking cyclists on a journey through the Hoosier heartland. The longest route is 100 miles, but shorter options are available, including 25-, 50- and 75-mile rides.

“Bike MS is an experience grounded in camaraderie that brings together cyclists of all levels for one reason — to create a world free of MS,” said Beverley Stafford, executive director of the Indiana chapter of National MS Society. “Funds raised from this event support cutting-edge MS research as well as programs and services for people living with MS in this community.”

Bike MS is one of nearly 80 rides across the U.S. hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. More than 80,000 people are expected to participate in the nationwide events.

Anthony’s Chophouse to feature original Glass Chimney bar

Many visitors to Anthony’s Chophouse will feel a touch of nostalgia.

The new Carmel resRESTAURANT taurant, which opens this month, will feature the Glass Chimney room, whose centerpiece is a mahogany bar. The room pays homage to the upscale Carmel restaurant, which closed in 2008 after 32 years.

Chuck Lazzara The building, 201 W. Main St., is owned by Chuck Lazzara, co-owner of Ritz Charles. The restaurant is owned by his son, Tony Lazzara, and wife, Kayla.

“We had this vision Tony Lazzara probably six years ago to say wouldn’t it be nice if it had a little Carmel history in the restaurant,” Chuck Lazzara said. “Then we heard Bru Burger was going to tear down Glass Chimney.

We thought wouldn’t it be great to incorporate this bar into our restaurant downtown.”

Chuck Lazzara and his son met with the owner, Mike Cunningham, in 2014 to ask if they could buy the mahogany bar. Cunningham agreed because he didn’t have plans to use it.

“We thought we should try to save the bar for Carmel history,” Tony said. “It was more about dad going there and knowing about the bar and service. I think I had only gone in there once. I knew it was a cool bar everyone remembered, but I didn’t have a vision of it yet until I saw it. It’s beautiful and is tied into the design of the entire building.”

So, they had the bar taken apart by a master carpenter and moved it. Tony estimated it was around 100 pieces. The parts were stored in relatives’ homes before it was put back together at the restaurant. The master carpenter oversaw the

“We did a light refinishing,” Chuck said.

“We didn’t want to change the character of it. We did a little of steel wool. It’s all the original stuff. We wanted to go with an old Chicago look, so we put this marble floor in. We designed the space to fit this.”

In 1998, Glass Chimney owner Dieter Puska, with a builder friend James Taylor of Custom Homes of Carmel, decided to establish the Glass Chimney Bar room. The mahogany bar was built the same year, and it became one of the hottest spots in Carmel. People entering the Glass Chimney would be greeted by the tuxedo-dressed Gabriel Piron.

“You’d go to the bar and hear what the $13 special for the night was,” said Chuck, a frequent visitor. “It was packed to the gills. My wife (Lynn) and I went there often, and we saw a lot of people from Carmel.”

Puska opened the original Glass Chimney restaurant in the Main Street shop-

ping center at Old Meridian Street in 1976.

In 1979, he moved around the corner on the Old Meridian Street to a larger spot he had to remodel.

Chuck Lazzara said Puska has offered to display his cognac collection at the bar.

“A lot of people we’ve shown this to have said they can’t wait to come back,” he said. “At first we thought we have it up here and have a bartender up here in case a few people want to drink. But everyone who has come in said they want to come up here, so that’s why we sectioned it off in its own space.”

Chuck moved to Carmel in 1975, working as a real estate agent before opening Ritz Charles in 1985.

A 2008 Carmel High School graduate, Tony made the feasibility of a downtown Carmel steakhouse his DECA project as a senior. He graduated from Ball State’s entrepreneurship program in 2013, using the steakhouse as his thesis.

The Indy Shorts Festival concluded July 29. All the Choice winners will have encore screenings at the Heartland International Film Festival, Oct. 11 to 21, in Indianapolis.

“Grateful,” which won for Indiana Spotlight, chronicles the story of Indianapolis resident Jenni Berebitsky, who suffers from ALS. Geist resident Amy Pauszek, who has her Where’s Amy photo column in Current Publishing Inc., was the film’s executive producer and producer.

“The reason this award is so prestigious is because it is a statement to the major film industry and its executives that our film is marketable, profitable and will go places after the festival,” Pauszek said.

Chicago to highlight 2nd album

“We usually play 100 shows a year,” Loughnane said. “We still enjoy playing for people. To be able to do this 50 years later and have people come out and enjoy it at this level, there’s no reason not to do it.”

Chicago will be joined by REO Speedwagon at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville. During the tour, Chicago performs its entire self-titled second album as its first set. The second set is all the other hits from the past, Loughnane said.

“When you put a show together, the intent is to make each and every one of them an event for the audience and something they can remember through the years,” Loughnane said. “They actually tell us that when we take pictures before and after the show. People tell us all the time that they remember a specific show back when they were kids.”

Anna’s take: The Rail was constructed in an old barn, and the upstairs bar is reminiscent of what the barn may have been like before The Rail opened. A window in the upstairs bar overlooks Westfield’s popular Park Street and the patio. The restaurant specializes in farm-to-table meals, with many of the ingredients locally sourced in Westfield. I ordered the Shakshuka, a Middle Eastern dish comprised of tomato compote, herbs and spices, feta cheese and an egg.

The egg is cooked in the oven with the compote, then topped with mixed microgreens and parsley. The compote’s spices are mostly made up of za’atar, a Middle Eastern herb mix heavy in thyme and toasted sesame, and sumac, which has a lemony-flavor. The egg yolk is still runny, and the traditional way of eating Shakshuka is to break the egg, mix the yolk in with the compote and scoop the contents with a baguette.

To counteract the heaviness of the dish, it is paired with a spinach salad tossed with cucumber, tomato, radishes, red onions, olive oil, vinegar and salt and pepper.

The salad is topped with mint, which adds a Midwestern twist.

The entire dish is vegetarian-friendly and can easily be made vegan by excluding the cheese and egg. The compote is full of flavor, but not spicy in terms of heat. The entire dish was beautifully presented on a wooden plank.

Suggested pairings: La Yunta Torrontes Argentinian white wine, a lighter beer such as a pilsner or a wheat or, for the cocktail drinkers, the Bramble Mule or the Gin Blossom.

Chef’s take: Co-owner/chef Toby Miles said he was taught that tasting a dish is the third step in eating one. The first is seeing the contents and tasting it with the eyes, which is why Miles said presentation is so important. He provided some tips for the home cook for plating a meal.

“Everybody eats with their eyes first.

Sight and smell are the biggest triggers for memory,” Miles said, noting that smelling a dish is the second step to eating. “When you plate something, you want all your components to be able to stand alone by themselves but complement each other at the same time. We like grouping to make the dishes pop a little bit more.”

Although every chef is different, Miles suggests using colorful ingredients, letting them stand out and adding a little bit of salt are all ways to turn a novice chef into one who is up and coming in the cooking world.

Helsinki: Beauty in the far north Commentary by Don Knebel Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, thriving amid its natural TRAVEL disadvantages.

In 1550, the king of Sweden, which controlled the area at the time, founded Helsinki as a trading village on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. The city began to grow in the 19th century after Russia defeated Sweden and took control of Finland. Today, Helsinki, with a population of approximately 650,000, occupies its original peninsula and 315 islands, connected by bridges and water transportation.

Located just 2,000 miles from the North Pole, Helsinki is, with the exception of Reykjavik, Iceland, the farthest north of all world capitals. For almost three months in the fall and winter, the sun hugs the horizon, providing about five hours of daylight. Winter temperatures rarely rise above freezing and temperatures of 25 degrees below zero are not unusual. Precipitation falls about 180 days a year, making Helsinki rainier than Seattle.

Despite its climate, Helsinki, always im-

maculately clean, is routinely ranked among the world’s most livable cities, having one of the world’s highest urban standards of living. The major sidewalks are heated in the winter. Residents not wanting to walk can take the efficient Helsinki Metro, the northernmost subway in the world. Four large indoor swimming halls allow yearround swimming. Four other pools provide swimming exclusively for dogs, one offering half-hour lessons. World-class museums and theaters provide extraordinary cultural opportunities for such a small city. And, of course, the ubiquitous Finnish saunas provide opportunities to be inside during the cold and dark days of winter. In 2012, Helsinki was named the World Design Capital for its innovative approaches.

Each year, at least 5,000 people move to Helsinki from all around the world. If you get a chance to visit this unique city, take advantage of it.

I love collective nouns. A collective noun is a name for the group of similar things. Well-known GRAMMAR GUY examples include a pride of lions, a colony of ants, a herd of cows and a murder of crows. Some of my favorite, lesserknown collective nouns are a tower of giraffes, a business of ferrets, a coalition of cheetahs and a prickle of porcupines.

What is the proper term for a group of people? You could accept a number of collective nouns, depending on context: tribe, nation, family or crowd. But, when it comes to everyday English, how do we refer to our group of friends?

We call them “guys.”

This term, in vernacular usage, applies to a group of male humans, a group of men and women, or a group made up entirely of women.

Originally, the term “guy” comes from Guy Fawkes, a 17th-century rabble-rouser who was involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot in England, in which a group of guys attempted to blow up the members of both Houses of Parliament, King James I, most

of the royal family and leading officers of state in order to establish a powerful English Catholic regime. I’ll spare you the rest of the details and cut to the chase: Their plan didn’t work. Fawkes got caught.

After Guy Fawkes’ notorious legend spread, the term “guys” came to be known as something similar to a “gang” or a group of “rebels” – bad guys up to no good. As the term progressed, its meaning shifted to something more positive, like “people on your team” or “friends you can count on.”

What do you say to your friends if you’re trying to get their attention? I would guess most of you would say, “Hey, guys!”

This is in no way the capital “G” grammar rule for a collective group of humans.

It’s my takeaway based on listening to how people, men and women alike, actually talk in 2018 America. So, I’m totally fine if you guys disagree with the Grammar Guy on this one.
