Zionsville boy fights leukemia with support of Riley

By Brielle Saggesse • news@currentzionsville.com “I want to go on a helicopter ride.”

These were the words of 3-year-old Drake Williams when his famphilanthropy ily arrived in Florida for spring vacation last year. While his siblings were excited for the pool or the beach, Drake had his sights set a little higher. Little did he know, a helicopter ride is exactly what he would get.

For a few weeks he had been battling what appeared to be a nasty virus. Doctors tossed around diagnoses from strep throat to toxic synovitisto. But it wasn’t until April 1 when they finally hit the mark. Drake was diagnosed with leukemia.

“It started out as small talk, but then everyone became increasingly concerned,” Drake’s mother Abby Williams wrote on Facebook. “His blood tests were back, and the nurse kept saying, ‘We have a really sick child’ in a raised voice.”

His specific condition, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, results from an overproduction of immature white blood cells. While a healthy child would have a white blood cell count in the 4,500 to 11,000 range, Drake’s registered at 150,000.

With the intensity of his count in addition to his young age, he was considered in the veryhigh-risk group for ALL and in need of three-anda-half years of treatment.

The next step was to transport Drake to a children’s hospital in Pensacola where his needs could be better met. But because a 90-minute car ride was not an option, an ambulance couldn’t suffice. In an ironic twist, Drake was going to get his wish.

“When they said the helicopter was there they thought he would be frightened, but it was so comforting to tell him, ‘Remember when you

said you wanted to go on a helicopter ride? The helicopter is here.’’”

But still needing to fully support Drake’s condition, the family had a new destination: Riley Children’s Hospital. A jet flew Drake and his mother back home to Indianapolis where he could receive treatment and start the road

to recovery. Months after his diagnosis, Drake and his family said they are extremely thankful for every bit of support they have received, but above all are thankful for Riley.

“We knew Riley was the best and we felt comforted by that. We would do anything for Riley Hospital because our son wouldn’t have the treatment he has without them,” Abby said.

“My oldest son asked, ‘What would we do if we didn’t live close to Riley?’ and I said, ‘We’d move closer.’”

Along with the help of the hospital, the Williams family said they have seen an outpouring of support from others around them. When Drake was diagnosed, Abby created the Facebook page, “Diary of a Sturdy Kid,” to record his journey and keep loved ones updated on his treatments. Because of this page, she said so many have come behind the family to do whatever might help this process. This group is lovingly referred to as the “Drake Dynasty,” and they even created T-shirts with the name to show their support.

From their position, the Williams family urges others to channel their efforts into giving back to Riley Children’s Hospital and to leukemia research.

As longstanding supporters of the Traders Point Hunt Club, the family said they were looking forward to the Traders Point Hunt Charity Horse Show, which has donated its profits to Riley for the past 10 years. This year, Drake was to be the face of the show. Because of recent weather-related issues, the show was cancelled but other opportunities like it still exist to help the cause.

“Life doesn’t always throw you a straight ball,” Abby said. “This is a curve we weren’t expecting, but we’re trying to make life as normal as possible and we couldn’t do that without the support we have.”

Water issues dampen progress at Creekside

By Sam Elliot • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission held a special meeting July 30 to address waterrelated issues encountered at the site of the Creekside Corporate redevelopment Park project.

Commissioners voted to spend up to $3,500 for Moss Well Drilling to close off a trio of wells on the property at 106th Street and Zionsville Road, purchased by the town in May 2013 to develop an environmentally-friendly industrial office park.

Wayne DeLong, Zionsville director of planning and economic development, said it’s not uncom-

mon to find wells on developing properties.

“They need to be plugged by a well driller licensed by the state of Indiana, and they need to be plugged to a point where they do not interfere with the roadbed,” DeLong said.

The RDC also approved $2,000 to work with environmental consulting firm August Mack before installing part of a water line in the ground.

“To go back to the main line, you have to go through wetlands, so the water company was concerned about soil boring through that without having some indication that the environmental situation out there is appropriate,” RDC president Luke Phenicie said. “Once we have this figured out, we can then give the direction

to continue on with the project. This has been the biggest hurdle right now.”

In additional business Thursday, the RDC approved the sale of a piece of land on 106th Street to Scannell Properties for $42,000. The town will still have access to part of the land to put in a future roundabout.

The RDC also approved of engagement letters from Barnes and Thornburg concerning the tax increment financing of Creekside and 334/700 East.

The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission will host its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Town Hall Community Room.

Officers now carrying Narcan

By Navar Watson • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville police officers started carrying Narcan on July 20, an opioid-fighting drug that just might save public safety the lives of victims of heroin overdose.

“This is a no-brainer,” Zionsville Police Department Chief Robert Knox said. “It’s the right thing to do.”

Naloxone, known by its trade name Narcan, reverses the lethal effects of opioids, such as heroin, and lasts 30 to 90 minutes. This can sustain an overdose victim until paramedics arrive and bring him or her to the hospital for further treatment.

Both full time and reserve officers are receiving one dosage of Narcan as they report to work. Each patrol car is also equipped with a breathing bag, which helps resuscitate people who are not breathing.

The Metropolitan Board of Police Commissioners decided to equip officers with Narcan in late June.

“Our job – the very first thing – is preservation of life … even if it means protecting a person from themselves,” Knox said.

which provided the Narcan, breathing bags and training for the officers. During training, officers learned to recognize the signs of an opiate overdose.

Narcan works like a nasal spray. Officers are to administer one half of the dosage into each nostril of a suspected opiate-overdose victim.

Narcan is harmless, Knox said, so even if an officer mistakenly believes an overdose is heroin-induced, it won’t “poison” the victim.

Officers with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Lebanon Police Department also started carrying Narcan.

“I’m excited and happy that we have the opportunity to do this, but I hope it’s all just never needed,” Knox said. “It’s kind of like half the tools on our belt. We hope we never need those things.”

Zionsville artist recognized for unique style

By Michelle Williams news@currentzionsville.com Local artist Joyce K. Jensen has recently received international recognition for her unique style painting in waachievement tercolor. International Artist magazine invited Jensen to author an eight page feature article including a tutorial on her technique in its most recent summer issue. The opportunity was a result of her work placing as a finalist in the magazine’s annual competition.

“There aren’t a lot of people who paint the type of real vivid work that I do. I get many comments that my colors are so bright. It’s unusual in watercolor,” Jensen said. The tutorial portion of her magazine article walked readers through eight steps she uses in her self-developed technique.

Jensen expressed an interest in attending art school as a teenager in the 60s, but was advised by a high school counselor that “women could only be art teachers.” Discouraged and uninterested in a career in education, Jensen put down her brush for nearly the next 40 years.

She eventually completed a degree in English with highest distinction from IUPUI, and

pursued a career as a freelance writer. But at age 55, Jensen decided to live her dream of becoming a painter after experiencing a sudden loss of two dear friends, and the debilitating illness of another.

“I went out and bought a bunch of paint and some books, and I got into my first national show,” Jensen said. She quickly realized that she had a unique talent, and has worked hard to develop her skills. Today at age 70, she enjoys painting in her unique style and finds inspiration in color. “I love painting old toys.

I like painting candy. I like painting anything that’s real bright and colorful.”

Jensen shares some advice for artists who may feel a discouragement similar to what she experienced. “My approach would be to put your creativity first and trust yourself.

Just follow your heart. Do what you feel is appropriate.”

Gallery’s painting sales aid ICAN

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com There was some unique art at Zionsville’s Avalon Jewelers/Gallery last month.

The paintings, hangphilanthropy ing on the walls of the shop at 275 S. Main St., are created by Indiana Canine Assistant Network dogs, using their noses, paws, ears and tails to paint. All the money raised goes to ICAN, which pairs dogs for training with careSchube fully-screened incarcerated adults. Each painting is accompanied by a photo of the prison handler with the dog. The service dogs primarily help adults and children with disabilities.

Susan Schube, the store owner, got interested in service dogs when she saw the impact one had on a friend’s son, who has autism.

“The woman is a widow and they got a service dog for him,” Schube said. “Not only has it made a difference for the boy but made a difference for the mom too, because it’s taken some of the weight off her shoulders.

It’s been an amazing process.”

“We thought it was going to pour rain and at 4:55 (p.m.), we thought no one is coming,” Schube said. “But at 5:05, they came, they saw. They bought, they donated. They petted dogs. They got photos galore. It was magic.

It’s been a terrific experience. These volunteers and trainers put their hearts into it.”

It costs $1,600 to sponsor and place a dog.

Schube said they more than made that on the First Friday. The sale of paintings in the store has raised enough to sponsor three dogs plus purchase food and supplies.

The trainers have made return visits with the dogs on three Saturdays.

“We get a lot of (foot) traffic with our Farmers’ Market and it’s worked,” Schube said.

Gallery opens on Main in Carmel

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com The Center for Creative Artists, known as Indiana’s original artist-owned gallery has relocated from Zionsville to the Carmel art Arts & Design District.

Started back in 1978, it’s a collective of 30 local artists who all live and work in Indiana and each piece is original. There’s no gallery owner taking a big chunk of their commissions, it’s truly an egalitarian community where each artist gets equal space and time.

“Everyone gets about the same equivalent area and we change out the art on the walls every two months,” said Lee Ellis, president of CCA. “And we change locations, so if you feel you got a bad spot last time, you get a new location next time.”

The CCA Gallery used to be located in Broad Ripple and then as that area become more bar-centric, it moved to Zionsville. The new move to Carmel was prompted by a need for more space and the interest in the monthly Gallery Walks and other city events to promote local artists.

“Every time you see us there will be something new,” Ellis said. “So even if you went to a previous Gallery Walk, we’ll be pretty differ-

ent every time.”

The new address is 111 W. Main St, Suite 135 in one of the Carmel City Center Community Development Corporation’s spaces. The 4CDC, as it is called, helps offer art galleries space at a subsidized rent.

The CCA Gallery should offer art for walls and smaller gifts to buy in a variety of mediums.

“We’re different in that we have like 11 3D people,” Ellis said. “Also, our price points might be lower than some other places so we hope to offer something different in the Arts District.”

Court ruling favors Whitestown – The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled last week that Whitestown can move ahead with the annexation of about 620 acres of land in Perry Township. The decision reversed a lower court ruling that sided with landowners seeking to block the annexation. The land is not included in the section of Perry Township that recently joined Zionsville through a reorganization, which the appeals court also deemed legal in a separate case.

Moth event teaches ‘citizen science’

By Maddie Yerant • news@currentzionsville.com The featured insects didn’t cooperate for the Moth Night Out at the Zion Nature Center, but that didn’t stop participants NAture from learning more about the winged creatures and other local invertebrates.

The center’s inaugural Moth Night Out on July 24 was held in conjunction with National Moth Week, an international program put on to gather information and increase knowledge about moths.

“There are 17 countries participating (in National Moth Week), having 121 different programs – just today,” said Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and Zion Nature Center manager.

“All over the world, people are doing just what we’re doing: Waiting until it gets dark and seeing what’s out there.”

In order to bait for moths, Murdock tagged trees with a special mixture and set up a white sheet underneath bright lights to attract the insects. Both types of bait are easily doable at home, Murdock said, underscoring one of the points of National Moth Week: that citizens as well as scientists can help to gather information about new species.

on programs that are called citizen science,” Murdock said. “So those are programs where you go out and do science-type activities, but you don’t have to be a scientist to do that.”

Although Murdock and the event’s 20 or so participants, primarily children and parents, did not see any moths during the evening, they did observe other insects in action, including daddy long legs, lightning bugs, mosquitos and cockroaches.

According to Murdock, it might have been too early in the evening to see moths. Regardless, Murdock said she considered the evening a success.

“No one seemed too upset that they didn’t see any moths,” Murdock said. “They enjoyed their daddy long legs and cockroaches and everything else.”

Julien LePage was a high school classmate of mine. I didn’t know him very well, we just occupied the same classplain talk rooms from time to time.

I didn’t even know his name was Julien until graduation day when the principle called for Julien Francis LePage to walk onstage and receive his diploma.

Everyone called him Fuzzy, and why wouldn’t we? He had a feral head of hair that was undisciplined and totally untrainable.

After graduation Fuzzy did what most of us did.

He got a job and aimed his life toward career and family. The family part worked out perfectly with an adoring wife and five great kids. The career, however, took a couple of surprising turns.

At first he worked as a highway patrolman.

But 20 years after spilling out of high school, he quit and moved to Warroad, Minn., just south of the Canadian border. There he bought an odd assortment of deep woods airplanes and set about becoming a bush pilot.

For years he happily ferried hunters and fishermen in and out of Canadian resorts.

Then, he grew restless again. For years he had been watching civilization steadily encroach on the wilderness. Then one day he

flew into a resort that was so remote that the lake wasn’t even on the charts.

“As I taxied up to the pier,” he told me years later, “I noticed the whole place was lit up like a major city. Generators were humming everywhere, music blared from loudspeakers, and uniformed resort workers met the plane.”

It was too much, he said. He sold the flying service and bought another in northern Alaska where he hoped it would be quieter. It was in this largely uncharted region of the world that Fuzzy spent the final years of his flying career.

After retiring he moved to Arizona to enjoy a life of leisure. But it was only a few months before he got bored again and went back to work as a pilot for the flying service he once owned in Warroad.

After declining health finally took him out of the cockpit, he managed the airport in Warroad for several years. Fuzzy LePage died last month after suffering a massive stroke.

Some say a quiet hush fell over the northern skies.

Women’s networking group grows business, helps community

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Women in Network started out as a small group of women wanting to increase their referrals and netCover story work within their community. In just two short years the group has increased to more than 40 members who not only network but also regularly take part in philanthropic events.

“We were going to be happy if we had 10 ladies in our group,” co-founder and real estate agent Kathy Wood said.

Wood, along with fellow co-founder, Debbi Kuller, organized the group in May of 2013.

“We started it just on the idea that there was no women’s business networking group in Zionsville,” Wood said. “We wanted to start something where we could obviously increase our business but on the idea there would only

be one industry represented by each lady in our group.”

Amy Connelly, a career coach, was one of the original board members and knew Wood and Kuller before the group was formed. She joined because she saw a need for a networking opportunity for women in Zionsville but doesn’t necessarily base her membership in the group on business referrals alone.

“It’s a really great way to network with people and to become aware of other resources in the community,” Connelly said.

Not only does having one representative from each industry cut down on competition, but it also diversifies the group. All types of industries are represented from insurance to marketing to real estate. Applications are taken in order to avoid conflicts.

“We always encourage a guest to come and sit in on one of our meetings. They’re welcome to come and check us out and then if they like what they see they can fill out an application,” Wood said. “We have an application process where our board of directors take a look at the application and make sure there are no conflicts with the industry they are representing.”

ZWIN members meet monthly to learn about a variety of topics.

While networking and business are a major focus of the group, so is philanthropy. For the last two years, group members have participated together in the St. Vincent Cancer Walk in Zionsville.

“We have several ladies in our group that have been affected personally by cancer either with their children or themselves,” Wood said. “We just thought this would be a great opportunity for us to give back and show support for the women in our group.”

ZWIN brings in guest speakers based on members’ feedback. A program director sends out a survey to members twice a year to get ideas on topics that can benefit their businesses.

“It was very helpful to have the executive director of the Boone County Economic Development come in and talk with us a couple of months ago,” Connelly said. “We now know the types of businesses that are coming into the community.”

The women of ZWIN find it especially insightful to learn from other diverse women in their organization and to support one another.

“More than anything it helps us to be plugged in to what’s happening in the community and

know how to help each other thrive in our individual businesses,” Connelly said.

Did we speak too soon here?

A few weeks ago in this space, we labeled billionaire presidential candidate Donald Trump a buffoon. While that may be true, given his bluster and off-color comments, we’re taking a closer look. What we most admire about Trump is this: He (for now) is a Republican with more than enough fortitude to tell the Republican National Committee where to get off. In truth, the Party of Wimps, is hurting Trump. Its leaders have no clue how damaged its brand really is. It began with George W. Bush and his spineless colleagues in the House and Senate. They actually brought rise to the new liberalism. Think about that. As we see it, Trump is holding a powerful card these days, the one that he may turn over and show him moving to independent status.

Yes, an “I” as Ross Perot once was. As an independent, he would throw the whole GOP nominating process into a bona fine mess, because he would, without a doubt, cause no small amount of squabbling among the leadership. Gall? Nerve? Guts? Smarts? We’ll go with the latter two at this point. He’s the only one in the current candidate pool with enough spine to say what he truly believes (even if he’s dead wrong on some fronts), not what “we” want to hear, and now it seems to us that he’s the leader in the clubhouse with respect to telling terrorists, nukeholding nations and general opponents of the U.S. that enough is enough. Donald Trump, independent. Can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth, to speak nothing of the meteoric rise of angst, at RNC offices (Dysfunction Central) if he declares that designation? If he remains, could he rebrand the party? We’ll see.

While it seems summer has just begun, the kids are already buying backpacks and planning class schedules. Some of their friends, we’re told, have already found their way back into the classroom. For our younger ones, life is fairly simple. We follow the prescribed list provided by the school for supplies; and, we clean out the closet to see which clothes fit from the previous year. Although in our house, we may have reached the penultimate occasion as our youngest has finally matched in height to his big brother. Never daunted, we confirm classes and plan for back-to-school night.

Likewise, our older is preparing to return to his second year at Indiana University.

This time the trip is old hat. There will be little fumbling to find classroom buildings, the best place to get pizza, and the bookstore which sells its wares at a slightly lower price. Instead, our preparations have turned towards more adult topics. Along the way, we have attempted to directly

address difficult matters like substance abuse, interpersonal conflict, human sexuality, and domestic finance. While each of these has its own peculiarities, talking dollars and cents can be the most awkward.

College students are burdened with debt, along with their parents, at a rate unprecedented in human history. At the same time, irresponsible teen sexuality is on the decline. Is it possible that we’ve talked enough about the spread of disease but too little about the insidious spread of easy credit? What does it mean to be a debtor?

To our credit statement, to our spirits, and to our future? Can debt be smart? When is it most assuredly foolish? Creditors can be partners or predators – it is imperative that we know the difference.

All summer I have felt tired. At first I thought it was just my body finally slowing down after 10 months of juggling teaching, parenting and marriage. Then humor I suspected that my thyroid gland was the culprit. Most recently I’ve blamed the stupid training program I’m doing for a stupid triathlon that a stupid brother-in-law, or BIL, talked me in to. But alas, I now know the real reason for my frequent lethargy despite 10-hour-a-night sleeping marathons. Here’s what went down.

While vacationing with my entire family in South Carolina, a different BIL made a plea for Advil. My room was the closest, so I dashed in and grabbed an old Aleve bottle that contained what I thought were an assortment of various pain relievers. I sifted through and selected two small orangeybrown caplets and handed them over. Then, because it was my night to prepare dinner, I headed to Publix.

Twenty minutes later I received a phone call from my sister asking if I’d accidently given her husband Ambien. I laughed out loud and said, “Of course not! I don’t even own sleeping pills. And I’ve been working out of the same bottle for the past few months.

Those were definitely Advil!”

Turns out, they were most definitely not Advil, but honest-to-God 5 mg zolpidem tartrates. Luckily the BIL whom I drugged was fine after a long nap, but I spent the next hour crying, extremely embarrassed and utterly confused by my mistake. How had Ambien even made its way in there? The last time I remember having a prescription for it was 2007! Could these be the same ones?

Regardless, the mystery of my low energy levels is now solved. Every time I thought I was treating a headache I was actually ingesting a sedative! My family thinks the whole thing is hilarious, and won’t let me forget it. “Anybody have an Advil? I really need to sleep tonight!” or “Danielle, is this blue pill Aleve or Viagra?” Clearly, I’m surrounded by comedians.

I’m just thankful I solved my fatigue problem before the triathlon. Talk about stupid!

Let’s play Bocce Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Our friends Len and Helen invited us and some other church members to their house to play Bocce. Len read it was humor a great sport for Unitarians. But it might have said septuagenarians—he wasn’t sure. A player tosses the pallino, a small ball, down the court and then teams compete to see who can throw additional balls, which are a bit larger, closest to the target ball.

Simple enough, but soon a dispute arose when Myrna heaved the pallino onto the neighbor’s lawn and we didn’t know whose turn was next or how many points her team lost, and Martin wanted to know if we all stunk so much it was time to find another church activity.

To avoid any future confusion, I bought a book called “The Joy of Bocce.” I already owned “The Joy of Cooking” and “The Joy of Sex,” although both of them were put in storage before we started to remodel our kitchen.

The author summarizes, “Some people think it’s just a game of throwing bigger balls at a smaller ball.” Then the rest of the book is about how to throw a big ball at a smaller

ball. Mario wonders why bocce can’t get more TV coverage. (Maybe when this Donald Trump thing dies down.)

Determining whose ball is closest to the pallino is exacting. “When the distances are smaller than your foot, use a pencil, pieces of twigs and even a car antenna.” Apparently, the idea of a tape measure never dawned on these people. Precise measurement is important. When you have eight solid wooden balls the size of grapefruits, unlimited beer and cranky old people, you want to avoid any potential conflict.

There is also a chapter on Bocce etiquette, which includes not thinking too long over a shot, and maintaining emotional control. But my favorite is number three: DON’T WANDER OFF. Climate change: The real deal Editor, If one follows popular media, one is likely to “know” that “scientific evidence is overwhelming that man made climate change is real and happening now”. It is correct that climate change is real – it has been for four and a half billion years – but the “man made” part is minor.

My credentials; I am retired. I have never worked for an energy company. I’ve never accepted a grant. My Purdue degree is in a natural science and I have actively studied it ever since. I am an environmentalist. I cannot be written off as a “science denier.”

What I am going to tell you now is understood by few because it’s not what the political grant money supports to get the prescribed answers, Carbon in the atmosphere and oceans is much more controlled by volcanos than by humanity. The major causes of climate also include sun spots, sun flares and Milankovich cycles (Earth’s wobble and orbital shifts).

There has been limited press on the fraud of how temperatures have been reported and who has reported them for what reasons. The preponderance of responsible climate researchers report that world temperatures have not increased for 17 years and that we actually are now in a 10 year cooling cycle. Apparently there is even more, not less, ice in the Arctic.

I also study world politics more than most. That identifies me as a little nuts, but it’s clear that “global warming/climate change” is a political movement to compromise the greatest, most generous country this world has ever known by ending what’s left of its free market. Be careful who and what you believe, promote and ask for.

Redistribution of wealth, which this fraud is really about, is best accomplished by rewarding free enterprise.

Please don’t ask for more destructive government regulation.

She performed the musical theatre songs, “My White Knight” and “Show Me.” “I knew image was important (to a performer) but didn’t realize really how important it was until Mr. Alvarez told us today about a social experiment with a famous violinist,” Swaney said.

“When (the violinist) went out no one recognized him without the stage, the suit and the hair. It’s all about how people recognize you and how you present yourself.”

Kathleen Muloma, Songbook All-Star and Carmel High School graduate, performs a solo in “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” For the competition, Muloma sang “What’s New” and “I’m Beginning To See The Light.”

Kristin Barnes, Songbook All-Star and Carmel High School graduate sang “100 Easy Ways to Lose a Man” and “So In Love” for her part in the competition. “My favorite memory from this week was whenever all of us would just sit around and make music together,” Barnes said.

“I’m just continually blown away by the talent and blessed to be here.”

Stirsman said, “You need to know what it is you want people to see you for. An artist on stage commands attention. Your voice is your art and that’s what we want people to see.”

Stirsman and Alvarez discussed how to build a performer’s image from choosing the right color for a gown to creating drama through contrast.

“We can’t help you with notes be we can sure help you with the note you put out, physically,” Alvarez said.

Z’Sparkle to return to Zionsville

In August, a favorite fundraiser will return to Zionsville.

Z’Sparkle, a unique event to raise money for Alzheimer’s research, will fundraiser take place at 8 p.m. on Main Street on Aug. 14.

The event? A race where men dressed in drag run – high heels and all – from Oak to Hawthorne Streets down Main.

This will be the sixth year the event takes place, collectively raising over $150,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter.

The actual race consists of the men running in full drag straight down Main Street, but the volunteer committee for the fundraiser also votes on best legs, best hair, and best pit crew.

“I recommend coming to the event because it’s a lot of fun, it’s something different that you don’t see every day, especially if you know someone participating and you can have a good laugh at their expense,” Chapman said. “All this money goes to help support Alzheimer’s research, which is not as big as some other researches going on, but we try to make memories before we lose them.”

It does not cost anything to come watch the event, but the VIP tent, which opens at 7 p.m., costs $15. The VIP tent has a cash bar, hor d’oeuvres, and a band. Those attending must be 21 or older.

Concert to benefit Autism Speaks

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Rachael Mellor, who has been singing since she was 6 years old, has found a way to combine her two passions. performance Two years ago, her son Logan, who will be a third grader this fall, was diagnosed with high functioning autism.

“She was devastated, but yet totally embraced it,” said Robin Reeder, her aunt who lives near Carmel. “So she did a fundraiser concert for Autism Speaks in Pennsylvania last year and it was a great success, so she did it again this year.”

Reeder made arrangements through Autism Speaks Indiana to arrange an Indianapolis concert fundraiser for their organization featuring Mellor, who lives in the Pittsburgh area.

The Songs for a Cause concert will feature Mellor and Nathaniel Licht, also from the Pittsburgh area. The performance is set for 8 p.m.

Aug. 14 at Indiana Landmarks Center’s Cook Theater, 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis.

“She’s headlined at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh. She recorded and wrote about Logan’s autism so that will be a song she will be singing when she’s here in concert,” Reeder said.

Fogel outlined the three teams implementing this model.

The transition team helps people transitioning from one level of care to another (e.g. hospital to home). The ambulatory team keeps patients healthy, and the integrative care team deals with needs outside the scope of “traditional doctor things,” like transportation to a doctor’s appointment or money for antibiotics.

MissionPoint works to eliminate these barriers, Fogel identifying them through personal interactions with people, either through home visits or wellness programs.

Fogel said he is excited to start implementing more measures catering to patients’ needs, such as same-day appointments, online scheduling and extended hours for busy people.

“The beautiful thing about the model is it works for everybody,” he said. “It works for the Medicare person who has multiple medical needs; it works for the mom who has sick children. It is scalable and flexible.”

The (good) news about naps Commentary by Debra Balos, DO Although American culture doesn’t widely support the idea of siestas, have you ever wondered about family medicine the benefits of napping? While there are some do’s and don’ts, daytime napping can have advantages for some people – especially when it comes to productivity and alertness. Research shows that even a 10-minute nap can improve performance on cognitive tests. Naps also increase daytime alertness for those who are normal sleepers, but get insufficient amounts of sleep. Additionally, naps as long as two to four hours can be helpful for people who have to stay up late, such as shift workers, students and airline pilots.

Considering a nap? Here are some things to keep in mind: Short naps lasting 15-20 minutes can give you a burst of energy. Longer naps may help improve memory and creativity.

Naps lasting between 30 and 60 minutes can sharpen decision-making and enable learning.

Know when to nap. Avoid napping too close to bedtime, and limit naptime to less than 90 minutes. Long daytime naps can interfere with the body’s internal clock, or

circadian rhythm.

Taking a nap shouldn’t make you feel worse. People often worry that napping will make them feel more tired. Taking a short nap can rejuvenate, helping you make the most of the remainder of the day. Keeping naps under 20 minutes will help you stay in the lighter stages of sleep so you won’t wake up feeling groggy.

Unfortunately, napping isn’t beneficial for everyone. People struggling with insomnia or depression should avoid daytime sleep. Naps can make insomnia worse, and for people who are depressed, sleeping during the day can heighten symptoms of depression.

Getting sufficient, high-quality sleep is an important part of maintaining good health. If you’re having trouble sleeping at night or have questions about how daytime sleep might benefit you, talk to your primary care physician. He or she can provide advice or refer you to a sleep specialist for further evaluation.

Doula is an ancient Greek word meaning “a woman who serves.” Today, a doula is a trained and experienced business professional who provides continuous support to mothers before, during and after birth. Zionsville recently gained a well-known doula named Patti Crawford, founder of Indy Doula Associates, when she moved into the community last month.

Crawford has been a practicing doula for five years and is certified through DONA International — a widely-recognized certification organization.

She previously ran an indiCrawford vidual practice, and she also worked in the doula program at Community North Hospital for two years. In November, she opened Indy Doula Associates consisting of four DONA-certified doulas.

“The reason I did the agency is because as a private doula, you need backup, especially when you’re busy.” she said.

‘Perpetrate’ or ‘perpetuate’ Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Here is one you might want to comment on: Does someone perpetrate a fraud or perpetuate a grammar guy fraud – or does it depend on how long he/ she intends to do it?” – (Wayne Sturtevant) Answer: Thanks for the question, Wayne.

It’s funny you should mention fraud…

The Grammar Guy column has been on a bit of a hiatus these last few weeks as I was in South Bend covering a trial dealing with, of all things, murder and insurance fraud. I suppose it makes sense to resume my grammar musings where my trial coverage left off.

At any rate, what we have here are nearhomophones that both come to us from Latin.

“Perpetrate” derives from the Latin perpetrare, or “to perform.” On the other hand, “perpetuate” comes from perpetuare, meaning “to make permanent.”

You can tell from those definitions, I imag-

ine, that “perpetrate” is going to be the appropriate word generally when dealing with crime. You perpetrate a heist. You perpetrate identity theft. You might even perpetrate some jaywalking, if you’re feeling really rebellious.

Fraud is an interesting example, though, because unlike many other crimes which are encapsulated into a small timeframe, fraud can continue on at length. That means once the fraud is in place, you would be totally appropriate to say you are “perpetuating” a fraud. Of course, you would “perpetrate” it in the first place – something has to already be in action before you can perpetuate it.

All that being said, crime is bad and you shouldn’t do it … although I might be able to overlook jaywalking.

Estonia is a tiny country along the Baltic Sea. In a very real way, the country was born singing. travel Beginning in the 13th century, the region of Estonia, lying north of Latvia and west of Russia, was ruled by Denmark, Poland, Sweden and finally, Russia.

Residents, most of them peasants, considered themselves “country people,” bound to whichever foreign power controlled them. In 1857, Johann Voldemar Jannsen, publisher of the first Estonian language newspaper, began calling his readers “Estonians.” He and his daughter then organized a “song fest,” held in June 1869 in Tartu. About 12,000 people listened for two days as an 822-member choir sang folk songs, encouraging Estonians to see themselves as a separate people. After four more festivals, the event moved to Tallinn, Estonia’s largest city. The sense of national identity and cohesion created by the song fests led to Estonia’s declaration of independence from Russia in 1918.

In 1940, the Soviet Union took control of Estonia, along with the other Baltic states of Latvia and Lithuania. The Tallinn song fests continued, with Russian songs added. An enormous stage,

holding 15,000 singers, was built on a hillside above the harbor. In September 1988, 300,000 Estonians, nearly one-fourth of the country’s population, assembled before and on the Tallinn stage. They sang patriotic songs, raised the banned Estonian flag and demanded independence, leading to sustained protests in what became known as the “Singing Revolution.”

On August 20, 1991, Estonia, called the “singing nation,” successfully declared its independence as the Republic of Estonia.

Every five years, more than 100,000 people

come together in Tallinn, where they listen to choirs including 30,000 performers while a flame atop a 42-meter tower celebrates the country’s freedom. Because of its importance in forming a nation, the Estonia Song Festival is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
