Residents thank police at rally

By Lauren Boughner • news@currentzionsville.com It’s been a turbulent year for police officers around the country. They’ve been in the national spotlight for the shootings of unarmed men and then as the victims of public safety shootings themselves.

Although it’s been a quiet summer in Zionsville, without the violence so many other cities experience, residents gathered at a rally July 22 to show their appreciation for local law enforcement and to thank them for putting their lives on the line every time they go to work.

Zionsville town councilor Bryan Traylor organized the rally in response to the recent news surrounding police officers.

“Zionsville’s a safe town, but we’re not immune,” he said, adding that the event was designed to help the public “see the officers as people.”

The rally began at ZPD at 5:30 p.m., when the officers made a shift change. Many police officers were getting off work while others were coming in. Several attended out of uniform to be a part of the event.

More than 100 members of the Zionsville community also attended, many with signs, cookies, pizzas or other homemade creations. Children of local officers wore T-shirts stating, “My daddy’s life matters.” Some handed officers vouchers for free lunch at local restaurants, followed by a handshake and a hearty “thank you.”

“I’m just in awe,” said ZPD Chief Robert Knox, who has been a police officer for more than 30 years. “We don’t go out and seek the limelight.”

Knox said that ZPD has received all kinds of appreciation in other ways as well, in the form of cards, emails, food and kind words.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak also attended the rally.

“I think (the rally) just shows how much the police force is appreciated by the people,” he

“I think it’s great when the community gets together,” ZPD patrol officer Joseph Denneman said. “It’s not about us. It’s about the community.”

Knox said that with more officers having been ambushed so far this year than all of 2015, he’s working to boost morale and encourage safety.

“I’ve tried very hard to be supportive to the officers during these trying times,” he said. “(I am) encouraging them to keep their heads up and be as aware of their surroundings as much as they possibly can.”

What it means: The council previously authorized the financing and construction of a new town hall building. This ordinance establishes a separate fund for depositing revenue from other town sources that will be used to make loan payments on the town hall.

What’s next: This was the second reading of the ordinance. The fund is now established and will be used to hold revenues for the new town hall project.

What’s next: The ordinance is in effect. Organizers of events wishing to serve alcohol must submit a special-event application, which must be reviewed and approved by all town department heads and the deputy mayor or mayor.

Black-and-white quilts on display

The biennial exhibit by the Charm Club showcases black and white quilts on clubs display at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center until Sept. 2.

The theme for the free exhibit, Black, White and More, was voted upon by the 11-member Charm Club and “was a challenge that we hadn’t done before,” said Charm Club member Judy Pleiss. All of the quilts are made using black and white fabric with one accent color.

The Charm Club initially met at SullivanMunce approximately 30 years ago after being interviewed for an article about quilts. The ladies who lived all over Indianapolis decided to make a charm quilt, in which no fabric is repeated. That gave the group the inspiration for its name, and it soon had its first exhibit featuring charm quilts at SullivanMunce.

Pleiss’ black and white quilt is a Mariner’s Compass block, a complex-pieced quilt block that she had decided never to try because it was too complicated.

“I thought, ‘I am never going to cut all those little pieces out,” she said, until a ruler was created to make the process easier. As a result, her quilt, inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night, is titled “Never say never.”

“Not all quilts are made for the bed anymore,” she said, “They’re made as pieces of art.”

Pleiss has two additional quilts on display that were inspired by artifacts in the Mathers Museum of World Cultures collection in Bloomington. Several of the women who created these additional pieces had their quilts displayed at that museum in February along with the artifact that inspired it.

Also on display are quilts by the Show Girls, so named because they all attend an annual quilting show in Houston. Despite living in different states, the Show Girls send similarly colored pieces of fabric to one another to use in their quilts, resulting in a collection that includes everyone’s fabric.

County considering new tax to bolster public safety

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Boone County officials are considering the implementation of a new tax to support public safety, which many local leaders say has been underfunded for law enforcement years.

A new state law allows counties to pass a local income tax to be used for public safety, economic development, certified shares or property tax relief. In Boone County, Sheriff Mike Nielsen is leading the charge to implement the LIT to support hiring more law enforcement perNielsen sonnel for his department and elsewhere.

“We’re working with staffing levels that are the same that they were in 2004,” Nielsen said of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. “I can’t go home and sleep at night knowing that I’m putting the inmates at risk, I’m putting the staff at risk, and we’re putting the citizens of the county at risk.”

Nielsen said he’d like to see the LIT rate at .5 to .75 percent of adjusted gross income. At .5 percent, someone with a $100,000 income would be paying approximately $400 a year, he said. He said he believes the tax rate is sufficient to fund his five-year strategic plan to staff and improve county public safety services, which he’s been formulating since taking office in January 2015.

If implemented, each municipality in the county would receive a percentage of the tax revenue based on its property tax levy as a percentage of the total property taxes levied in the county. In Zionsville, a .5 percent LIT would lead to an estimated $3.9 million annually in revenue for public safety. For the Boone County taxing unit, that amount would be approximately $4.5 million per year.

Zionsville officials said the town also is understaffed in its public safety departments.

“We have needs that we have not been able to fulfill. We’re down staff in police and fire,” Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro said. “Looking at a public safety standpoint, to give service to the community that it deserves and wants, between tax caps and everything else that we have (limiting us), it’s just extremely difficult

to do that. We keep falling further and further behind.”

The Zionsville Police Dept. is understaffed by six people, and the Zionsville Fire Dept. is understaffed by 12 employees, Mayor Tim Haak said. The town – and others in Boone County and the state – has been using funds to boost public safety efforts that Haak ideally would have gone toward infrastructure, parks or other town services, he added.

Mitro said that state tax caps, which restrict property owners from paying more than 1 percent of gross assessed value on a homestead and 2 or 3 percent on other properties, are one of the main reasons Zionsville and other municipalities are struggling to Mitro fully fund public safety.

“You can’t save your way out of it. It’s to a point where if you want to keep services at a level or help increase them, with the tax caps in place and with Zionsville in particular pretty much at the cap, there’s no way to budget for that without sucking all of the air out of the room,” Mitro said. “What you end up having to do then is start stealing from streets, stealing from parks. What do you do? Do you have the other services suffer to prop up public safety?”

In order for the LIT to go into effect, elected governing bodies representing more than half of the county’s population must approve it.

That means only two of the county’s three councils representing the largest population groups – the Boone County, Lebanon City and Zionsville Town councils – must approve it for it to be implemented countywide.

Nielsen, however, plans to present his proposal to all county governing bodies and give them a chance to vote.

If approved by Oct. 31, the new tax rate would go into effect Jan. 1. Zionsville officials said it would likely be mid- to late-2017 before they collect enough revenue to begin hiring for understaffed departments.

Ride for Rescues to benefit HSBC

By Megan Melton • news@currentzionsville.com The Humane Society for Boone County is hosting a Ride for Rescues motorcycle event Aug. 13. fundraiser People on two legs and two wheels will support their four-pawed friends and the humane society’s goal of funding and constructing a physical building for its animals.

Right now, those who work for the Humane Society for Boone County work with a foster system to house the animals they rescue.

“All of our money for this event goes toward our building fund,” said Susan Austin, vice president of the HSBC and director of fundraising. “We need a lot more money (for the building), but we keep plugging along.”

The registration fee is $25 per person and $40 per couple. The event will include the motorcycle ride, prizes, food and an auction.

“Even if people don’t ride motorcycles, they can still come out and support us,” Austin said.

After 1:30 p.m., the ride will end at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, and those who don’t have motorcycles can participate in the event for $20.

“The motorcycle community is one of the most generous communities there are, and they’re always looking for reasons to ride, especially as a group,” Austin said. “This provides

them with the opportunity, first, to support a great charity in need, and secondly, to have a very great ride.”

The event usually brings in approximately $20,000 for the shelter.

Those who work and volunteer for the HSBC say they hope a physical building will enable them to help and house more animals in the future.

“We don’t have animal control officers in Boone County,” Austin said. “We do a great job of going out in the middle of the night and responding to law enforcement calls for help.

We help make it happen.”

As an independent merchandiser with Chloe + Isabel, Gina Melvin had participated in sevshopping eral direct sales events, but none of them seemed to attract quite the right crowd.

So she decided to plan a Ladies Night Out Style + Shopping Melvin Event at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, and this time the response has been overwhelming. She had to ask for permission to expand the event into the building’s lobby area to accommodate the 35 vendors and has been forced to turn down others who are interested.

“When I started doing this, I didn’t realize how many women in the Boone County area do things like this,” Melvin said.

Most of the vendors hail from Zionsville, Whitestown and elsewhere in Boone County, although some come from Indianapolis as well.

They will be selling clothing, makeup, wellness items and more.

of Indianapolis, but she began selling Chloe + Isabel before the move in case she didn’t immediately land a full-time job.

She said that many working women, like her, operate direct sales businesses part-time, as well as stay-at-home moms who can work from home. All of them, she said, share an “entrepreneurial spirit,” and the shopping event will give them the opportunity to showcase their businesses and network.

Melvin said she hopes shoppers will enjoy connecting with other women as well.

“Come out and meet some women in your neighborhood, connect with them and encourage them as well as have fun,” she said.

With so much interest in the inaugural event, Melvin said she’s hoping to plan another one before the holidays.

“I love just seeing the positive reaction that we’re getting to this event,” she said. “We definitely hope to do future ones.”

Thomas W. Jarrett, 39, of Westfield, died July 22 after battling a debilitating disease for nearly a decade. He was born on April 16, 1977, to Paul and Marty (Alley) Jarrett in Indianapolis.

Tom was a man of deep love, kindness and selflessness toward others even Jarrett when battling an extremely painful disease. He married his high school sweetheart and together they enjoyed a life full of God-given joy with their two sons, extended family, church body and friends, even during years of suffering. Tom was a big advocate for his illness, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).

Zionsville man, five others summit Mt. Kilimanjaro

Bryan Debshaw is familiar with going to the extreme. The Zionsville resident frequently organizes teams to achievement run 200-mile Ragnar relay races. So when he decided to climb his first mountain, it made sense to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain in Africa.

“I did some trails in the Smoky Mountains and things like that and some trails in Colorado, but nothing that compares to Mount Kilimanjaro and that many days,” he said.

Debshaw, 45, encouraged running partner Andrea Ryan of Carmel and her husband, Bill, to join his group on the trip. He took an Auburn online MBA program, where the students met on campus each semester for one to two weeks. There he met Angela Griffith, from Atlanta, who expressed a desire to climb Kilimanjaro.

“I made a deal with her, you run with me and I’ll climb Kilimanjaro,” Debshaw said. “I just like getting groups together to challenge themselves to do something they wouldn’t do otherwise.”

The perception would be that one has to be very fit to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Not so, Bill

Ryan said.

“I don’t consider myself a stud by any means,” Ryan said. “But I’m not a couch potato. I would say if you can run five miles, you should be able to get up the mountain.”

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, 19,341 feet above sea level.

Debshaw was definitely glad he did it.

“It was a ton of fun and a great group of people and great guides,” Debshaw said. “The most challenging part was probably on the summit day the altitude and the thin air. It does affect you. I was the only one who didn’t take altitude pills. The day we did summit, it definitely slows you down and it’s hard to breathe. It slows down your mental process.”

The group all agreed they would do the Great Wall of China marathon in May 2018. The Ryans are considering joining Debshaw on an upcoming Ragnar Relay in Michigan.

“Bryan is a rock star athlete,” Bill Ryan said.

Debshaw, chief executive officer of POLARIS Laboratories, said he never did any serious mountain climbing before.

Debshaw has 27 years of military experience and serves as a lieutenant colonel and commander of the Indiana Air National Guard in Terre Haute.

Drummers open for Dalai Lama

When the Dalai Lama recently visited Indianapolis, a group of drummers from Zionsville set the tone for the event, permusic forming before a crowd of more than 6,000 people.

“Never in our wildest dreams would any of us have imagined that we would have had a chance to perform at one of his events,” said Sally Childs-Helton, a member of the Zionsville Drum Troupe that began about two years ago.

“It was one of those things you couldn’t even imagine to put on your bucket list.”

The opportunity came about through an acquaintance of Childs-Helton, who was part of a committee for the Dalai Lama’s appearance in Indianapolis on June 25. She had heard the troupe play and sent an email to Childs-Helton.

“It said, ‘How would your drum group like to play for the Dalai Lama?’ and my jaw dropped,” she said.

The group was joined by several other drummers from the Indianapolis area representing other cultures, so they kept it simple and meditative, beginning the program with a heartbeat rhythm.

“It’s in the rhythm of every culture,” ChildsHelton said.

The drummers recognized the importance of setting the tone for the afternoon.

Because of security concerns at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, the Dalai Lama was brought into the building after the drummers and others performed, but the drummers were still able to hear him speak.

“It was really quite an experience to be in the presence of someone who literally embodies compassion,” Childs-Helton said. “There’s a palpable energy surrounding the man.”

The Zionsville Drum Troupe practices the second Sunday of each month at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center and welcomes others to join their drum circle from 6 to 7 p.m.

Putting ads in perspective Commentary by Ward Degler I am sitting here looking at a large pile of paper. The whole thing weighs about 17 pounds and is made up of the combined ads from Thursday and Sunplain talk day’s newspapers.

I feel a special connection to this diverse lump of material, that goes back to my editorial days on a newspaper.

There were ads for just about everything both then and now. Women’s fashions took center stage with clothes for kids coming in second. There were ads for bicycles, car accessories, and so-called back-to-school essentials. I don’t know how “essential” today’s lists are, but when I was a kid, school supply lists always called for, among other things, a protractor. When I left home for college I threw away at least a dozen of them. As far as I can remember, none had ever been used.

The thing that dawns on me is this: I know something about these weekly mountains of ads that most people probably don’t. The ads are mostly the product of a printing process called rotogravure, a school of printing that was developed in Germany in the 1800s as a means of producing fine-quality art prints.

The process uses a system called intaglio, where ink is transferred to paper from engraved indentations in the printing plate. In standard printing, the ink is transferred from raised dots on the plate, dots which quickly wear out from friction.

Since there is no friction in intaglio printing, perfect quality can be maintained for very long print runs, something the inventors never thought about at the time. They just wanted to know that the 400th copy of a Durer masterpiece would be as crisp and professional as the first.

At the paper where I worked, a truck arrived twice a week with printed ads from the rotogravure plant in Kansas City. Everyone on the newspaper staff pitched in on those days to assemble the ads that would be inserted in Thursday and Sunday papers.

I think about this sometimes when I leaf through the ads and see one for school supplies that still includes protractors.

Hoosier history

The ball will pay homage to Indiana with treats and activities honoring traditions of the Hoosier state. Attendees can enjoy sugar cream pie, Indiana’s state pie; Inga’s popcorn will provide its bicentennial blend; and Indiana-shaped cookies also will be available.

Attendees can view a display of period dresses from the last 200 years, and guests can stop by a photo booth for a free picture to commemorate the occasion.

Hunters Moon, a band from Lafayette that plays 1816-era music, will perform English country songs, and guests will be encouraged to dance.

“You don’t have to feel obligated to do anything in particular.

Just come and enjoy the evening,” Ballentine said. “If you’re not a dancer, that’s OK, too, you can go up and enjoy refreshments, visit with your friends, look down at the dancers and just enjoy the evening.”

Several local officials are expected to be in attendance, and presentations will take place.

“During the break in the dancing we’re going to have the honor guard for the fire department present the flag,” ball cochair Kathy Flanary said. “We’re trying to make things nice and historical.”

The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Boone County Historical Society.

Flanary said she attended a ball commemorating the U.S. bicentennial in Lebanon in 1976 and thought a similar event would be fitting for the state’s celebration.

“I remember attending the ball and how wonderful it was at our (Boone County) courthouse,” Flanary said. “It was a huge deal.”

The courthouse itself is full of history. Built in 1911 at a cost of $265,000, it is made of limestone from Bedford in Lawrence County and is believed to contain the largest monolithic limestone columns in the world at its north and south entrances.

Its dome is the second-largest stained-glass dome in the state, and eight Hahl pneumatically calibrated clocks operate inside.

“The courthouse itself is worth the trip just to see it,” Ballentine said.

In Zionsville, the biggest bicentennial celebration is planned for noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at Lincoln Park to coincide with the torch relay heading into town. The relay begins Sept. 9 in Harrison County and will travel approximately 3,200 miles through all 92 Indiana counties in five weeks.

The Zionsville party is still being planned, but organizer Rhonda Crawshaw said it will likely include desserts, an Abraham Lincoln impersonator, music and speakers.

“The torch is supposed to come by, but the timing is really difficult to predict,” Crawshaw said. “It’s coming from another county first, but we expect the torch to come through Lincoln Park (between 1:30 and 1:45 p.m.).”

Boone County also will celebrate the torch relay with a block party Oct. 13 at the county fairgrounds in Lebanon. The event will include genealogical information, a reading of work by Indiana authors and a food drive for the Caring Center.

Now, Ballentine is bringing history to life locally as a cochair of the Indiana/Boone County Bicentennial Historic Ball, an evening of music, dancing and more to celebrate the 200th birthday of the State of Indiana.

The Aug. 6 event will showcase Hoosier culture from 1816 through modern times. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in period outfits if they have them – Vicki will be wearing an 1809-style day dress and her husband will don his 1803-style military uniform – but it’s not a requirement.

“It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Ballentine said. “You don’t have to worry about what you’re wearing. We just want you to come and look nice.”

This Democratic National Convention was one for the ages. We don’t recall seeing anything quite like it. Consider: Email scandal (Part Deux), party chairwoman removed but taken in by “the campaign,” protests, marches, shout-downs, tears, anger, a thorough Bern-ing of Donald Trump and a history-making presidential nominee named Hillary Rodham Clinton. On the whole, just when you thought the Republicans had the corner on The Clown Show, the Democrats flooded Philadelphia to grab a share. Oh, and the accumulative torrent of emails with “urgent” news (read: stabs) from both camps are enough to choke a giraffe. And now that it has ended and the campaigning begins anew, we urge you to watch carefully with respect to which candidate steps over the truth line the most. Prediction: It will end in a dead heat. We will be using factcheck. org now more than ever, and we believe you should, too.

Does a tweet from Kanye resurrect Babel? Or is it companies like 7-Eleven leading the charge by eliminating the pesky, if clear, small, medium and large monikers from its soft drinks instead replacing them with Big Gulps, Super Big Gulps and Double Gulps. Ranging from 30 to 50 ounces, these behemoths can account for half of a healthy adult’s daily caloric intake. Even McDonald’s starts its small at 16 ounces with a large hitting the Big Gulp’s 30 ounces.

Perhaps we do the same with many of our professions. The meaning of the words politician, journalist and educator are a bit looser today than they were not that long ago. Moreover, Newspeak and title creep has led to scores of people occupying the “c” suite, whatever that might be, to have the word “chief” affixed in front of an other-

wise mundane job description.

Recently “real” CNN journalist, Christiane Amanpour, was a guest on a “faux” news interview program of a comedy television channel. The host asked her to help him understand the nuance of integrity in reporting. Ms. Amanpour matter-of-factly responded that she no longer reports in a traditional sense because to show alternate points of view to the audience might allow some viewers to come to the wrong conclusion.

Therefore, instead, she simply deciphers the “truth” and reports only those things divined to be worthy of retelling. The studio audience, prompted by flashing “applause” signs, roundly approved of Ms. Amanpour’s predigesting of the tough bits of thought from a complex world. My truth is now your truth.

I spend a great deal of time judging other parents. I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help myself. Criticizing their humor decisions and actions makes me feel better about my own insecurities. My latest “issue” with certain moms and dads regards football. With all that is known about head injuries, I cannot understand why parents allow their boys to play, even at the pee wee level, and especially when there are less potentiallybrain-damaging sports out there. And the coaches are just as culpable. Forcing kids back on the field after sustaining hard hits, shooting them up with cortisone to mask the pain . . . I drooled over Paul Walker in Varsity Blues; I know what happens in the locker room!

Anyway, the other day I overheard two of my kids comparing their bodily ailments.

Tiny Dancer was describing the acute pain she experiences in her right knee whenever she pliés, while XC Runner was trying to one up her with his probable shin splits.

This was my first thought: “Suck it up, people! Nobody likes a wuss!”

And then I realized: I am just as bad as the football parents.

How often have I openly expressed disapproval when one of my kids bails on a practice or game because of injury or sickness? Gasp! The answer wasn’t just “frequently” but “usually.” And the few times I do manage to miraculously suppress my initial response, I’m still thinking to myself “Quit your complaining and get out there.”

What is wrong with me? When I consider the situation rationally, I know the right call is to listen to my children and ensure they receive the necessary treatment. But my gut reaction firmly steers me in the opposite direction. Whether I learned it as an athlete growing up or in my brief stint in the military, somewhere along the way weakness of body became equated with weakness of person. And that is simply unacceptable. Shame on me!

So my sincere apologies to all the football parents I’ve badmouthed recently. It seems I also have some “issues” to work on. Peace out.

Refusing to budget Commentary by Dick Wolfsie When we first got married, Mary Ellen toyed with the idea of a budget, but when she realized that saving money required humor not spending as much, the idea lost a lot of its glow.

Now that we’re both scaling back on work, it’s time to revisit the idea. My wife will be very meticulous about this, wanting receipts and questioning each expense. I’d leave home, but I know there will be no moving expenses in this budget.

“I’m dreading this,” I told her, “but let’s get started.”

“Alright, Dick, let’s each name monthly expenses we can’t change. Then we’ll know what our fixed costs are.”

“Mary Ellen, that’s a good idea. I’ll start with the mortgage.”

“Exactly. I’ll say pedicures.”

“The car payment.”

“Excellent. I’ll go with make-up.”

“Gas and electricity.”

“Hairdresser.”

“Mary Ellen, a car payment is very different from make-up and hairdresser.”

“Would you want to sit next to me in the car with bad hair and no make-up?”

“Point well taken.”

“Dick, let’s each name something the other person could save on. For example, you should give up that cup of coffee you get every morning when you are in the car.

“Why would I do that?”

“According to an article I read, if we had saved that three dollars a day for the last 25 years and invested it in Apple, we’d have two million dollars in the bank.”

“I feel so selfish. If I had given up going to Starbucks instead of Dunkin’ Donuts, we’d be billionaires.”

“Here are more ways we can save, Dick. We can wash the car ourselves. We can do our own landscaping. We will save if we change the car’s oil ourselves. Do you get what I mean when I say the word save?”

“Yes. Now tell me what you mean by the word we. This is going to drive me to drink, Mary Ellen.”

“Not a problem. Just be sure to turn in your mileage at the end of the month.”

Greek’s has new owners

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Jon Wright had a unique perspective of the Greek’s Pizzeria in Zionsville before purchasing it. restaurant “I used to help out there, covering some (manager) shifts if Mike (Cole) was on vacation or if he had another manager on vacation,” Wright said. “Zionsville was probably my favorite location before opening Westfield. I always liked the store and thought (Cole) did a good job in building it. I like the town of Zionsville as well.”

Westfield residents Wright and his wife, Julie, bought the Greek’s Pizzeria, 30 N. Main St., in Zionsville from Cole in early June. The Wrights, both 28, opened a Greek’s Pizzeria in Westfield in September 2014.

Prior to that, Wright had worked at several different Greek’s Pizzeria stores.

“I managed at Noblesville and Carmel, was just a cook at Fishers and helped out at Zionsville occasionally,” Wright said. “I was able to work with several different owners and see different management styles. I also spent time managing a Chick-fil-A in Noblesville and learned there.”

Wright said he checks in on both of his stores at least once a day if he’s not working a full shift at one.

“I usually work several shifts a week,” Wright said.

“I build them up and sell them,” said Cole, who opened the Zionsville Greek’s in August 2011. “I’ve done that with 12 locations. Lebanon is my 13th. I’m trying to focus on race directing and coaching. I’m trying to slow down.”

In June, Cole, 41, was the race director for the Zionsville Half Marathon. He is the organizer for the 10K and 5K races in Zionsville on Nov. 13. Cole, a former Ball State track and field and cross country competitor, is the assistant cross country coach at Zionsville Community High School and does some private coaching. Fab2Order takes next step

By Megan Melton • news@currentzionsville.com Fab2Order, a metal fabrication company, has come a long way since its beginnings 16 years ago with one emownership ployee in a pull barn.

Now, it has 40 employees alongside its sister company, Machine2Order.

“One of our customers, with a 15-year-old relationship with us, was looking to get out of the business,” Fab2Order Founder Jason Greeson said. “They were in Monrovia, (and) we’ve since moved them from Monrovia into Brownsburg.”

Greeson is a Zionsville resident of 16 years and a pilot. He and his family were the first employees of Fab2Order.

The Brownsburg company has experienced a lot of growth throughout the past couple years. After incorporating Machine2Order, it increased its annual revenue to approximately $7 million.

“There’s a lot of positive opportunity with the company that we bought,” Greeson said, “Three years ago, we looked at this and said, ‘Here’s what we want to do.’ And the next year we were saying the same thing and not making any progress.”

Greeson said his most important job is taking care of his employees, and he believes they are the most important factor in the company’s success.

“There’s people that have worked here since the very beginning that are still working here, and there have been people that have made a difference along the way that have shaped the organization and our culture,” he said.

• Flamme Burger, 6860 Whitestown Parkway, is expected to open soon in the Anson development in Whitestown. This is the second location for owner Henri Najem, who opened his first Flamme Burger in Fishers last year.

Jail converted to bar, restaurant

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Diners will soon be able to spend some time in jail enjoying a hot meal at Cell Block 104 in Lebanon, which coming soon is scheduled to open in August. The basement of the former Boone County Jail will house the first distillery in the county, Boone County Jail Distillery, while the upper two stories are leased to the restaurant.

Sean Stoller, owner and “warden” of the building, will become the master distiller once the distilling process begins. His family purchased the property at an auction in 2014 and renovation work began in 2015.

It was the building’s history that piqued the interest of the family.

“We saw a one-time opportunity to make this something of a destination,” said Stoller, “something that had history and something we could build brands and have fun incorporating both.”

The building was built in 1938, but the first jail in the same location dates to 1877. Stoller said that a tunnel that once connected the jail to the courthouse exists but has been blocked.

Indiana law prevents the distillery from offering tours or tastings until they have been open for three years, but Stoller said that he hopes to include that option in the future.

The restaurant name comes from a group of inmates who called themselves the 104 Club, as they were repeat offenders and jail’s address is 104 W. Washington.

“We try to share as much of the history and the past of the jail,” he said. “The building has a lot of flair.”

New shop combines bakery, floral

Becky Bielawski can’t remember exactly when she started baking, because she’s been doing it her whole life. new biz Last month, she launched a bake shop in Zionsville where she sells her cakes, eclairs, cookies and more.

But desserts aren’t the only thing found at Becky’s Bake Shop and Floral, which also opened as a flower shop.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind deal, because most people don’t do both, they do one or the other,” she said. “I wanted to get into the floral end of it and the wedding cake industry, and I just like flowers. I’ve got some cool arrangements, and I do a fair amount of wedding cakes.”

Bielawski operated a shop in Zionsville approximately 10 years ago, but she closed up shop when an insurance company purchased her building.

And in addition to her selections of desserts, the Zionsville resident takes personal orders and decorates cakes to the request of the customer.

“I like them all,” she said of her cake designs. “I don’t know if I have a favorite, just decorating is fun. It’s something different every day and a challenge.”

Despite her daylong hours, Bielawksi doesn’t do lunch yet, as she said she wants to get her feet wet with the bakery and floral combination.

Where’s Amy attends Songbook Masterclass with Feinstein Commentary by Amy Pauszek For two days, the Palladium opened its doors to the public and invited guests to experience the top 10, all-star students in their final journey in hopes of music becoming the 2016 Songbook Ambassador.

Where’s Amy was thrilled to meet up with Songbook Academy artistic director, founder and five-time Grammy-nominated vocalist/pianist Michael Feinstein, along with television writer and producer, Marc Cherry, creator of the ABC comedy-drama series “Desperate Housewives” and the Lifetime comedydrama series “Devious Maids” at the 2016 Masterclass workshops. Forty high-school singers from across the nation were chosen to have the opportunity to perform on the Palladium stage and attend workshops conducted by Feinstein and Cherry.

Many guests who attended the two-day, free public Masterclass workshops told me they were so impressed with the talented, young artists that they left wondering who would take the top prize and win on July 23. What a special day I personally will never forget because after a special photo shoot with Feinstein and Cherry, the two serenaded me with “Once in Love with Amy,” and it’s safe to say I left with a huge grin and memory that I will never forget.

Rotary beer event, Nickel Plate concert join forces

By Sam Elliott • sam@youarecurrent.com Two popular Fishers events are joining forces in an effort to promote enjoying some food and drinks while listening to live music outdoors for a good cause.

The Fishers Rotary Club’s Fishers on Tap sumfundraiser mer fundraiser returns Aug. 5. It will run from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Fishers Nickel Plate Amphitheater, including a collection of local craft breweries and restaurants with samples for guests.

“We’re hoping to have about 14 brewers. We’ll try to get a few more in, and we should have somewhere between 500 and 800 guests that night,” event co-chair Bill Jerrow said. “It’s roped off for our event because of the alcohol and age restriction, but it’s right there with the concert, too.”

The city’s AMP’D After Dark summer concert series has drawn record numbers to its shows this season, with Torn scheduled as the headliner beginning at 9 p.m. Aug. 5.

“The hope is that we’ll lift each others’ events up together and make it a little more fun and interesting and become kind of a special version of the concert series and our event as well,” Jerrow said.

“We’re very grateful to the City of Fishers because they’re providing a lot of logistical support. We’re providing the labor, and they’re allowing us to receive all those funds and do what we do, which is give them back to the community.”

The Fishers Rotary Club will use the funds raised through Fishers on Tap for its next cycle of donations to local charitable organizations.

“Our club has two donation cycles; one in the fall and one in the spring. The funds from this event will support the October donation cycle, and then we’ve got our winter event in February to support the spring donation cycle,” Jerrow said. “We usually give away $10,000 per cycle.”

Grilled Ginger Salmon and Grape Rice Bowl Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 4 boneless salmon fillets (3 ounces each), skin on.

• Kosher salt.

• Freshly ground black pepper.

• 2 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar.

• 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger.

• 1 tablespoon honey.

• 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil.

• 2 cups mixed green and red California grapes, halved.

• 2 scallions, thinly sliced diagonally.

• 4 cups hot cooked brown rice.

• 2 cups finely shredded green cabbage.

• 1 teaspoon sesame seeds.

• Reduced sodium soy sauce (optional).

Directions: Heat grill to high and oil grates.

Sprinkle salmon with salt and pepper; set aside.

In small saucepan, combine rice vinegar, ginger, honey and olive oil, and bring to simmer over high heat. Stir in grapes and scallions, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside off heat.

Grill salmon, skin side up, 5-6 minutes. Turn and grill another 2-3 minutes, or until salmon reaches desired doneness.

Divide rice among four bowls and top with cabbage and salmon. Spoon grape mixture over top and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

The biggest challenge for Carmel Community Players presenting “Next to Normal” is the way the musical is theater constructed.

“Ninety-five percent of the show is sung and five percent is spoken,” said Carlo Nepomuceno, a Carmel resident who is directing the musical. “It’s basically all music.”

The CCP will present “Next to Normal” from Aug. 5 to 21 at the Carmel Community Playhouse at Clay Terrace, at 14299 Clay Terrace Blvd, Carmel.

The rock musical, which opened on Broadway in 2009, won three Tony Awards, including one for Best Original Score. It also became the eighth musical to win a Pulitzer.

The musical is about a suburban household dealing with mental illness.

“The mother struggles with bipolar disorder and hallucinations,” Nepomuceno said.

Georgeanna Teipen plays the role of the mother, Diana.

“We focus heavily on vocals and fine-tuning the vocals,” Nepomuceno said. “Everyone has learned all of the music.”

Should I see a specialist?

Commentary by Christopher DiPiro, MD People often wonder whether they should see a specialist for medical concerns. While family medicine some health insurance plans require a referral to see a specialist, regardless of coverage terms, your primarycare doctor is usually in the best position to help set the course. This includes recommending consultations with specialists.

Holistic care through an ongoing partnership. Because your primary care doctor sees you regularly and knows your medical history, he or she is the ideal partner to help manage all of your healthcare needs. With a big-picture approach, your PCP not only completes your annual physical exam, but recommends routine tests, keeps track of your medications, and ensures you’re up to date on screenings and preventive care. If specific medical issues develop, your doctor can take appropriate steps, which may include ordering preliminary tests to help determine if seeing a specialist is in your best interest.

Quality healthcare management for less. While there’s a misconception that

some diagnosed health issues, including chronic diseases, require a specialist, the reality is that many health conditions can be effectively managed by your primary care physician at a lower cost.

Professional guidance. Even if you know you want to see a specialist, it’s wise to visit your primary care doctor first.

Some patients mistakenly assume they need to see one type of specialist when their condition actually requires a physician in a different specialty. When working closely with your primary care doctor, he or she can provide valuable assistance by sharing your medical records and the results of completed tests, which saves time and avoids costly duplication of effort.

Additionally, your doctor may be able to provide follow-up care, which also reduces costs.

Blueprint for Improvement: 1940s bathroom revitalization Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background info: The homeowners of this 1940s bungalow near downtown Noblesville have slowly updated the home to fit their needs but also maintain the style of the original design intent.

After updating the kitchen and dining room to suit the needs of their large family, they decided it was time for a more functional, updated master bathroom. Focusing on these two areas of the home are a great way to add value and function for eventual resale.

Before problems: The master bathroom was original to the home, and therefore, aesthetically, it needed an update. Every zone of the bathroom was crammed into a small space next to the other.

The homeowners even had to squeeze between the console sink and the corner of the shower to get to the toilet.

After

After solutions: The goal was to create more space and function in the master bath while adhering to the 1940s motif of the home.

1. A small closet adjacent to the master bath was removed to allow for more functional space planning. The toilet moved to the former closet space, which allowed for other changes.

2. The small shower was relocated to the former sink area.

This allowed for the shower footprint to be expanded, and the extended length allowed for the shower to be designed with no door.

3. Tile details were the showstopper of this bathroom! This tile also framed out the beautiful new glass block that replaced the old casement window. Continuing with the classic finishes, the plumbing and lighting fixtures, accessories, and even the electrical covers, were all finished in polished chrome.

4. To create needed storage, a custom built-in cabinet was recessed into the adjacent wall to save space and provide convenient access.

5. To make up for the lost storage, an additional closet was added to the bedroom footprint.

Draft of the Taj Mahal Commentary by Don Knebel The tomb of I’timád-ud-Daulah in Agra, considered a “draft of the Taj Mahal,” is one of the most beautiful structures in India. travel I’timád-ud-Daulah (“Pillar of the State”) was born in Iran as Mirza Ghiyas Beg. Seeking a better life, Beg took his young daughter, later known as Noor Jahan, to India, where he became an important member of the court of Akbar, the great Mughal emperor. Noor Jahan, said to have been the most beautiful woman in India, became highly educated and cultured. While married to a soldier, she caught the fancy of Jahangir, Akbar’s son. Recalling the story of David and Bathsheba, when Jahangir became emperor upon the death of his father, Noor Jahan’s husband was killed in battle and Jahangir then married the object of his desire. Noor Jahan, Jahangir’s favorite wife, dominated her weak husband, becoming the “power behind the curtain” during the glory days of the Mughal Empire.

When I’timád-ud-Daulah died in 1622, his

daughter ordered the construction of an elaborate tomb for him and her mother along the banks of the Yamuna River. The tomb, with octagonal minarets on each corner, was completed six years later and sits in the middle of a garden divided into quarters by intersecting water channels symbolizing the four rivers of life in Paradise. Unlike earlier Mughal tombs and palaces, which were constructed of red sandstone, I’timád-ud-Daulah’s tomb was built of white marble, inlaid with glistening semiprecious stones. Four years after Noor Jahan completed her parents’ tomb, her step-son, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, drew heavily on its novel features in building the Taj Mahal as the tomb for Mumtaz, his favorite wife. Duties: Provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Facilitate at least two support groups for children (ages 5-13), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Centers.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
