Growth is coming to the west side of Zionsville, and town officials are taking steps to help ensure its future residents can easily get where they need transportation to go.

The town has selected an approximate route for a future two-lane, north-south road to connect Oak Street and Whitestown Road. Its southern point will be where Cooper Road dead ends at Oak Street. It will head northeast to connect with S 875 E at Cruse Road. The project includes improving S 875 E from Cruse Road to Whitestown Road.

“This project is included in our 1983 Transportation Plan and following the engineering study, which is near completion, now there is priority to begin construction on it in 2019,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said. “With the residential expansion we are seeing in western Zionsville and the new neighborhoods coming online, improved north-south connectivity is really needed. And the residential growth and other developments in this area will only continue in the future.”

A Jeffersonville man died July 23 after crashing his car into a retention pond near Love’s Truck Stop in Whitestown.

Boone County public safety Sheriff’s Office Deputy Wesley Garst first noticed the red Nissan at approximately 2:48 a.m. when the driver sped through a stop sign at Indianapolis Road and Whitestown Parkway, nearly striking Garst’s vehicle. Garst attempted to pull over the Nissan, driven by 28-yearold Antonio Angel Barragan, but Barragan refused to stop and continued north on Indianapolis Road, according to a BCSO press release.

BCSO and Whitestown Police Dept. officers followed Barragan for approximately 2.5 miles when he attempted to make a turn near Love’s Truck Stop. Because it was traveling at a high rate of speed, the Nissan left the roadway, struck a guardrail and landed in a retention pond near

the intersection of State Road 267 and Indianapolis Road. Barragan was ejected from the Nissan and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said they don’t know why Barragan was speeding and refusing to stop. As of press time, they did not say if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The Pike Township Fire Dept. water rescue team made two dives to check the retention pond, and the Zionsville Fire Dept. used a drone to investigate the scene. The Indiana State Police and Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources also assisted with the investigation.

“Those people are all going to want to head south in general,” Lantz said. “There’s got to be a better and more efficient alternative offered for those people in time so when those neighborhoods start to see 50 or 75 percent capacity there is a road other than Ford Road for people to go south.”

The project is expected to include a 10foot, multi-use path and roundabouts at Oak Street and Whitestown Road. Last month the Zionsville Town Council approved using $220,000 from the Cumulative Capital Development Fund to include engineering work for the roundabouts as part of the project.

The project is estimated to cost $5 million, Lantz said. The town is planning to issue a bond to pay for it.

Nearly 30 parcels of land will be affected by the project, Lantz said, adding that the town has sent letters to those affected and had conversations with some of the property owners. He said he hasn’t received much feedback yet, because the project is still in its early stages.

Engineering work will continue this year, with land acquisition planned for 2018 and construction beginning in 2019.

Street Dance celebrates summer

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Meeting new neighbors and visiting old friends is Tracy Phillips’ favorite part of the annual Zionsville Street Dance event set for Aug. 5 on Main Street.

“It is the great moment of everyone in Zionsville coming back together before school starts,” said Phillips, executive director for the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event.

Music will be performed by party band The Bishops beginning at 7 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to dance on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic.

Beer and wine and food from approximately 10 vendors, will be available for purchase. A children’s area will have bounce houses, activities and snacks.

In past years, Phillips has noticed long lines for ticket sales and encourages attendees to purchase tickets through presale options.

Zionsville veteran recounts watching atomic bomb hit Hiroshima

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A few days later and the war would have been over. A few days later and Gerald Ellis would never have witnessed a pivotal moment in world history.

Ellis had just left basic training in cover story the U.S. Army and was on a ship headed to Japan. He was sitting at the bow roughly eight miles off the coast of Hiroshima watching for naval mines when he saw planes fly overhead, then a mushroom cloud.

Born in Tipton in 1925, Ellis’ father worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad until purchasing an 80-acre farm north of Westfield where Ellis spent his teen years.

He graduated from Sheridan High School in 1943, which would have made him eligible for the draft during World War II, but because his family farmed with horses, his father requested a year’s deferral for Ellis.

“I didn’t know my dad was going to get me deferred a year, and I was really a little unhappy about it,” he said. “I was ready to go. In retrospect it probably saved my life, because otherwise I think I would have been at the Battle of the Bulge (in Europe). This way I went to Japan.”

He was drafted and went to Indiana’s Camp Atterbury, then Georgia, California and Seattle before boarding the ship that would take him across the Pacific.

On Aug. 6, 1945, Ellis and his fellow soldiers were ready to invade Hiroshima. Landing barges were connected to the side of the ship. Ellis was wearing landing gear, watching for naval mines when he saw the planes.

“I thought they’d hit an ammunitions plant,” he said. “I’d never heard of an atomic bomb.”

At about the same time, he spotted a mine. He sounded an alarm, and the mine was safely disarmed.

“There were 4,500 of us on the ship. Sometimes, I wonder if I saved some lives,” he said.

But from his vantage point, Ellis was unwittingly exposed to radiation fallout from the blast.

A breeze spread it across the bow of the ship.

have children,” he said. “But I guess if it hadn’t happened, I might not be here.”

The radiation exposure also caused hair loss, so Ellis began wearing caps in his later years.

A little more than a week after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s surrender, and Ellis’ ship docked in Hiroshima harbor.

“It was complete devastation,” he said. “There wasn’t any town left.”

Ellis didn’t recall seeing any signs of life on shore but remembers spending several weeks in Hiroshima before heading to Nagasaki, Osaka and then Tokyo.

Ellis then spent a year and a half as a military policeman in downtown Tokyo during the U.S. military occupation. He was stationed in Nagano as a member of the 720 MP Battalion, for which he needed to be at least 6 feet tall.

“I guess they thought maybe being tall, that would intimidate (Japanese citizens),” he said, adding it wound up being unnecessary.

“The Japanese were very friendly,” he said. “We had white Jeeps, white helmets, white belts, white leggings, so they knew we were MPs.” Ellis taught many of the “kids” in his troop, most of whom were from West Virginia, to drive, with the added challenge of driving on the left side of the road, as is the case in Japan.

“They were anxious to learn,” he said. “I can honestly say I have never had a traffic accident, even after 75 years of driving a car. It was an experience for a kid who’d just turned 19.”

On Aug. 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., the world’s first atomic bomb was dropped above the Japanese city of Hiroshima. It exploded 2,000 feet above the city, destroying nearly 5 square miles and instantly killing an estimated 80,000 people. More would later die from the effects of radiation exposure.

Before the bomb was dropped, there were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima; only 28,000 remained after the bombing.

Three days later a second bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing 40,000 people.

Because the city is in a valley, the death toll wasn’t as high as Hiroshima, which is surrounded by flat land.

Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s surrender Aug. 15, putting an end to World War II. The death toll from the bombs varies by sources, with combined estimates as high as 226,000. On the 50th anniversary of the blast, 192,020 people were commemorated as dying in Hiroshima.

Ellis often watches local high schoolers head home and muses that he was that same age while serving in the military.

“I was so young, how did I do that?” he said.

When he returned to Indiana, he found a job in insurance, an industry where he stayed for 45 years and met his wife, Marjorie, on a blind date set up by friends and coworkers.

He and his wife bought their Zionsville home in 1962.

They were married for 54 years before she died in 2006.

“To me getting old, there’s a lot to it. But I think if you have a sense of humor, it really helps,” Ellis said. “I try to find something humorous in about everything.”

Commentary by Terry Anker Some days are perfect. The sun is shining. We awake refreshed before our alarm clocks roust us from our sublime slumber.

The day ahead is filled with anticipation and high expectations. And then, there are other days. The ones in which the rain falling is expected to change to ice – likely during our commute. The alarm failed to sound (or, more likely, we shut it off accidentally because of a restless night) and we are now already late for work.

We take them all, these contradictory days, in stride. What choice do we have?

Like a football team we gauge the nature of our opposition to plot our strategy. In some instances, we take an offensive stance. Running up the score, we expect to defeat weak resistance. But just as often, we must rely upon our defensive line. We dig in and cling to the earth, fighting for each inch as if they were yards. Do it we must; the game depends on our ability to stop the onslaught.

Yet, do we take the deportment too often? Would we be better if we ran the ball instead of burying it? Sure, it is OK to be defensive – sometimes it is the savviest move. But, it is not OK to feel perennially defensive. Human interaction requires that all parties engage and participate, each time, every time. When people imagine themselves under attack, they claim pardon from engagement. And, in the most severe and deplorable cases, they bully those around them into equal withdrawal.

Civil societies advance while dictatorships do not. Isn’t a constantly defensive posture a failed strategy?

An eclipse I’ll never forget Commentary by Ward Degler The last total eclipse I remember was in the late 1970s. What I recall about it was the eerie light it plain talk cast for the minute or so the sun was completely blocked by the moon. It was like the dead calm you get just before a summer storm; the kind that makes your skin tingle.

The first one I saw was in the summer of 1944. It changed my life.

We were living with my uncle and grandmother in Racine, Wisc. World War II was still raging in Europe and the Pacific, and life on the home front had long since been turned upside down.

My dad’s career with the Forest Service had vaporized when the war erupted and the Army drafted the foresters and took all the trucks and bulldozers for the war effort. For the interim, he took a job as a draftsman in a defense plant.

News of an impending eclipse offered a welcome break in the war-torn tedium of day-to-day living. We talked about it around the supper table, and dad showed me how to punch a tiny hole in a piece of cardboard through which I could safely view the sun.

On the day of the eclipse around noon the sky began to darken, and I pulled the peep hole cardboard from my pocket.

What I could see through the tiny opening was less than satisfying. It was hard to focus, and the hole had rough edges which blurred things further. As the moon moved in front of the sun, I got frustrated, threw the cardboard down and grabbed my telescope.

For a second I saw a perfect black circle in the middle of a golden aura. Then there was a brilliant flash and everything turned black.

For weeks I couldn’t see with my right eye. The eye doctor said I had burned a hole in my retina. For several years I struggled, coped and ultimately compensated for the damaged eye.

When I had cataract surgery a couple years ago, the doctor asked me how I got the hole in my retina. When I told him, he just shuddered and shook his head.

The next total eclipse is just around the corner. On Aug. 21 thousands of folks from Oregon to South Carolina will be squinting through cardboard peep holes and filtered telescopes to witness the event. The next one won’t be until 2024.

I don’t plan to look at either of them.

While I was watching the Peyton Manning bit he did for the ESPY Awards about his new life in a retirement humor home, all I kept thinking was “Exactly.” Senior living facilities sound like a little slice of heaven. Yes, Medicare is still a couple of decades away for me, but AARP is less than five years out.

Happy Acres could be a reality just as my youngest graduates high school!

I’m serious, folks. Peyton jokes about early dinners, craft time and competitive shuffle board, but ask anyone who knows me well and they’ll tell you those have “Danielle’s Dream Come True” written all over them. And having someone else cook, clean and drive for me? In my book, that’s called “vacation,” people.

It’s my understanding that these places also offer super-fun, organized mall outings and game mornings (bingo!), 24-hour access to soft-serve ice cream (score!) and, the piece de resistance . . . monthly Matlock marathons! And I can basically do whatever my currently pacemaker-free heart desires.

I can stay in my room all day and read nothing but Nora Roberts. I can eat supper at 4 p.m. and then immediately go to bed. I can even swear repeatedly for no reason at all, just like an NFL player (right, Peyton?). And no one, absolutely no one, will judge me for it because I’m in a retirement home . . . that’s just what old fogies do!

I’ve already spoken with my husband Doo, and he fully supports me, especially if he meets an unfortunate early demise. So, Peyton, hang in there. I’ll see you in 2022, and we’ll grow old together!

Time in a bottle Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Our fridge gets a good once-over every month. We wipe off the shelves and throw out any food item that has a humor green slime. I’ve tossed out a lot of good guacamole based on this criterion.

In the back of the pantry, we found Greenie Hard Chews for dogs. The box said “best used” by August of ’16. But what could go wrong with them? I wondered. Would they turn greener, get harder, become even chewier? I was OK with that, and probably the dog would be, too — if we still had one.

Back in the closet went the Greenies.

There was a bottle of Bookbinder Cocktail Sauce for shrimp. It said: “Use by October 2014.” It looked fine, although I think shrimp sauce is supposed to be bright red, not black with maroon specks. It smelled better than the fresh shrimp that had been in our fridge for only 36 hours. Back it went.

We found some Orville Redenbacher Popcorn, and under Orville’s picture it said “Expires May 2005.” I put the jar back because I think that might have referred to Orville and not the popcorn.

A jar of tartar sauce had no expiration

date at all, but it did say “Famous since 1877.” I’m thinking this may have been a 100th anniversary edition of the product, so I got rid of it.

Finally, we threw away a bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing. I think the name tells it all. It had hidden from us for 17 years.

In an effort to economize and be less wasteful, the Wolfsies decided to prepare a dinner out of food that probably should have been discarded: • Popeye Spinach (Best if used by December of ’13) • Artichoke hearts (Enjoy by March ’16) • Tomato soup (Use by April ’14) • StarKist Tuna (Put in toxic landfill after October 2010) We found a bottle of wine in the back of the closet. I immediately poured it down the drain.You can take a chance with a can of asparagus from 2011, but a bottle of Merlot from 2006 was just asking for trouble.

Suzanne Crouch couldn’t stop thanking AmerisourceBergen for choosing to grow in Indiana. new biz The drug wholesale company held a grand opening of its $55 million distribution facility July 24 in Whitestown. Sen. Todd Young and U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita joined Crouch in praising the move. “As a global company that is No. 11 on the Fortune 500 list, you had the opportunity to locate anywhere,â€? Crouch said. “We are so grateful that you chose Indiana for your new state-of-the-art distribution center and most importantly thank you for the 120 jobs you are creating. Crouch said the growth didn’t happen accidentally. “Today we’re recognized as the best state in the Midwest and fifth best in the nation for doing business (by Chief Executive magazine),� Crouch said. “Our success didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of 12 years we’ve worked to create a progrowth business climate by cutting regulations, by balancing budgets, by reducing taxes and investing in workforce and our infrastructure.�

Crouch said she is confident the Boone County distribution center will continue to show AmerisourceBergen officials why Indiana is a state that works for business.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered $125,000 in performance-based tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans.

Young also thanked state leaders and Whitestown officials, including Town Manager Dax Norton, for securing the deal with AmerisourceBergen.

The 327,000-square-foot facility is one of 27 AmerisourceBergen distribution centers in the U.S. It is off 1-65 at 5920 Performance Way in Whitestown’s Perry Worth Industrial Park. “We have the workforce and work ethic, we have people that know to be at work on time, be at work drug-free and the technical skills to get the job done,� Rokita said.

AmerisourceBergen CEO Steven Collis said approximately 100 jobs have been filled, but they are still hiring. Collis said he expects eventually the company may hire as many as 150 people.

Of the jobs, the 94 semi-skilled employees will be paid $15.42 per hour, according to a Town of Whitestown news release.

The seven clerical staff members will make $19.42 per hour and the 19 salaried employees will make the equivalent of $32.40 per hour.

Blooms & Linen moves, expands

Kroger timetable uncertain

Blooms & Linen has moved to the other end of Zionsville’s brick street, opening at 27 East Pine St. in June. relocation It is now open Monday through Saturday.

“We mainly needed foot traffic,” said Stephanie Childs, who co-owns the boutique with Lindsay Lyon.

Many Blooms & Linen customers found the previous retail location on Poplar Street after discovering the website. The new home was formerly the site of Earth Explorer Toys.

Logistically, the store is now closer to other women’s retail clothing options that include Lesley Jane, Delaney’s, Siro’s Chic Boutique and Southern Fancy, which both women said benefit the town.

“It’s a good way for people to hit all the shops and find something different,” Lyon said.

The pair opened their online boutique in February 2016 in Childs’ basement but found it challenging to serve customers who wanted to try on clothing. Moving to an office space in the Village of West Clay met the need and allowed for more storage, but the owners jumped at the opportunity to open a storefront in Zionsville last year when space opened on East Poplar Street in October.

There is no timetable yet on when two former Marsh stores in the Zionsville area will reopen as Kroger acquisition stores.

Kroger engineers are focusing on seven stores to reopen.

Following a downtown Indianapolis store, the Zionsville store at 5 Boone Village is expected to be the next store that will be ready.

“That one downtown on the canal is the newest of the bunch,” said Eric Halvorson, Kroger Co. public affairs manager who serves as company spokesman.

“Repairs and remodeling there will be easier than some of the others.”

The store at 10679 N. Michigan Rd. on the Carmel and Zionsville border is listed fifth among those seven stores.

“We don’t have anything definite yet (on the opening date),” Halvorson said.

“We’ll know more after our engineers get inside the buildings. A normal remodeling project could take anywhere from six to eight months. It is more complicated when stores are open for business. Since

“We can carry excess inventory,” Childs said of the 600-square-foot basement in their Pine Street location. “It’s about the size of our other shop.”

Using the front room of the store for now, they hope to soon add a dedicated kids area and a children’s clothing line.

“It’s fun to be over here,” Lyon said. “We feel a little bit more included in the shopping part of the village.”

Topvalco, a subsidiary of the Kroger Co., finalized its purchase July 19 of 11 stores, formerly owned by Marsh Supermarkets, which went out of business last month.

The signing by both parties capped an acquisition, which was approved by a federal bankruptcy court in June.

“Kroger will dedicate more than $20 million to renovate the buildings, prepare them for additional features and add energy-saving technology that is part of the Kroger commitment to become a Zero Waste company by 2020,” a Kroger Co. statement said.

Kroger has hired several hundred ex-Marsh employees. According to the release, many are already in training or working at nearby stores.

Kroger’s human resources team remains open to interviewing all interested job-seekers, the release said.

The Kroger Central Division has 137 food stores, 115 pharmacies and 98 fuel centers.

Breastfeeding and the new mom Commentary by Diana Garino, RN World Breastfeeding Week is Aug. 1-7. To celebrate mothers, babies and breastfeeding, Diana Garino, women’s health RN, childbirth and inpatient education coordinator at IU Health North Hospital, offers tips for new and expecting moms.

How can women prepare to breastfeed before giving birth?

One of the best things for expectant parents to do is take a breastfeeding class during pregnancy. In class, parents learn how the breast works, how to recognize baby’s hunger cues, how and when to nurse their baby, along with tips for positioning and latching.

Since newborn babies can’t say “Hey, mom, I’m hungry!” it’s important to watch the baby’s body language to know when to feed. Watch for signs like turning head side to side, sucking, hand movements toward face and smacking lips.

What advice would you give to expectant moms who want to breastfeed?

I recommend trying to breastfeed within the first hour of giving birth, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. A nurse or lacta-

tion specialist can check the baby’s latch and give guidance as needed. When the baby latches, it may be uncomfortable but it should not be painful.

It’s also helpful to keep baby in the hospital room as much as possible so you can nurse on demand. Remember to allow baby to lead when breastfeeding by watching for those hunger cues! Feeding the baby based on hunger cues helps promote a good milk supply.

Finally, wait to introduce pacifiers and bottles until breastfeeding is a wellestablished routine. The motion required to nurse is different than that required to suck on a pacifier or bottle, and you don’t want to cause any confusion.

What advice would you give to moms who aren’t having success right away?

Use your resources! Above all, be patient. Breastfeeding is a learned activity for both baby and mom.

Blood shortage continues editorial@youarecurrent.com Thousands of people have responded to the emergency call for blood and platelet donations issued by red cross the American Red Cross in early July, but there continues to be a critical summer blood shortage. Eligible donors of all types are urgently needed. As a special thank you, those who come out to give blood or platelets with the Red Cross through Aug. 31 will be emailed a $5 Target eGiftCard After issuing the emergency call, the Red Cross has experienced a 30 percent increase in blood donation appointments through mid-July. About half of the appointments were scheduled by donors using the free Blood Donor App or at redcrossblood. org. Despite this improvement, blood products are still being distributed to hospitals as fast as donations are coming in, so more donations are needed to meet patient needs and replenish the blood supply.

“The blood supply is like a cellphone battery, it constantly needs recharging,” stated Rodney Wilson, communications manager of the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services

Region of the Red Cross. “We sincerely appreciate those who have responded to the call to help save lives and encourage those who haven’t to consider rolling up a sleeve and give the gift of life. It only takes about an hour but can mean a lifetime for patients.”

Jackson to lead in ‘Spider’s Web’

By Heather Collins editorial@youarecurrent.com Emily Jackson has pursued acting since she was 7 years old. A 2005 Hamilton Southeastern high performances School graduate, Jackson joined the high school drama club and performed in “Macbeth Did It” and “Mr. Hobbs Vacation.”

Now 31, Jackson will take the stage as the female lead in Agatha Christie’s “Spider’s Web” until Aug. 6 at the Center Stage Community Theater in Lebanon.

Jackson will play Clarissa HailshamBrown, a character Jackson describes as mischievous, dramatic and caring. In preparation for the show, Jackson has balanced her day-job in the facilities department at Allied Solutions in Carmel with rehearsal four times a week.

Jackson’s father, Dave Jackson, also will perform in the show as Constable Jones.

Jackson said she enjoys the process, interconnectivity and support of the local community theater network.

“In the process of putting on a show you become so close with everyone involved in the production,” she said. “You might be strangers on day one, but by the end you’re as close as family. Together, we create

Agatha Christie’s “Spider’s Web” offers the mysterious, hair-raising thrills of a traditional Agatha Christie play, but with a comedic twist. Award-winning director Jan Jamison, who has directed several community theater shows, including “Suite Surrender” at the Carmel Community Playhouse in February, assisted the cast in comedically portraying the twists and turns of the play. “(Jamison) does a wonderful job of helping us interpret the characters to make them human and to highlight the comedy of the script through our delivery of lines, body language and facial expressions,”

Jackson said. “That humor balances well with the suspense of wondering, ‘Who done it?’ As always, Agatha Christie keeps you guessing until the end.”

Jackson will soon be preparing for her role at the dramaturge for the show “33 Variations” with Jamison in 2018.

Three-day GreekFest to begin Aug. 25 in west Carmel

GreekFest president/co-chair Marika Kalyvas Bagios hopes pleasant weather will help the festival surpass those figures this year.

GreekFest, the 44th Indianapolis Greek Festival, is set for Aug. 25 through 27 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 3500 W. 106th St., Carmel.

The festival runs 4 to 10 p.m. Aug. 25; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 26; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27.

“Since we don’t charge admission,

it’s hard to determine exact attendance numbers, but we figure between 15,000 and 20,000 last year (for the three days),” said Kalyvas, who is in her second year as event president. “The year before we had a tremendous turnout because the weather was perfect. There were no football games.

Last year, the rain kind of took us out of it a little (Friday), but we made up for it on Saturday and Sunday.”

There will be live music and dancing, children’s activities, Greek wine and craft beer, an enchanted food court, authentic food and pastries, marketplace and agora and guided church tours.

The Hellenic Dance Troupe, featuring different age groups (kindergarten to second grade, third grade to fifth grade, middle

school, high school and adults), will perform all three days.

There will be cooking demonstrations and puppet shows.

George Karras and his band will perform all three days.

“This is one of the major fundraisers for our church,” Kalyvas Bagios said.

There were approximately 550 community volunteers last year.

“A lot of church members bring their friends to volunteer, and we get a lot of associations and groups that come and volunteer, like Indy Ambassadors and the Park Tudor soccer team,” Kalyvas Bagios said.

Kalyvas Bagios said there is no set fundraising goal.

Fuelicious: Cars, food and wishes

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com On Aug. 25, Lucas Estate in Carmel will host the third annual “Fuelicious: A Celebration of Wheels and fundraiser Wishes,” a benefit for the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. Proceeds will help the nonprofit grant wishes, such as shopping sprees and trips to Disney, of children with life-threatening or terminal illnesses.

A partnership with the producers of the Aug. 26 “Artomobilia” event in the Carmel Arts & Design District, “Fuelicious” provides guests a smorgasbord of collector cars, heavy hors d’oeuvres and ultra-premium spirits in the elegant luxury of Lucas Estate, 1143 W. 116th St., Carmel.

More importantly, the upscale event benefits children who are battling life-anddeath illnesses. Event chair John Leonard said the long-term goal is to make “Fuelicious” a chief fundraiser for the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund.

“While we don’t talk about specific amounts raised, we seek to contribute increasing amounts each year,” Leonard said. “(We) hope to be one of the Indiana Children’s Wish Funds top-producing events within the next three years.”

Between 7 and 11 p.m., “Fuelicious” guests can admire 50 original, concourse-quality collector automobiles arrayed throughout the grounds of Lucas Estate. They can also enjoy heavy hors d’oevres and desserts fashioned by chef Anthony Puma and par-

Blueprint for Improvement: Kitchen transformation in Geist Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal was to design a highly functional, stylish kitchen the family could enjoy for many years to come.

1. The biggest obstacle was the load-bearing column placement. By adding a new beam, the kitchen was able to be reconfigured and the island straightened out to provide efficient space.

2. New semi-custom cabinets were designed and installed, with a light, neutral paint on the perimeter and a contrasting navy paint finish for the island. The glass accent cabinets contained curved mullions to mimic the arched doorways.

3. The quartz countertops provide a durable, low-maintenance material option, and the backsplash tiles complement the warm flooring and navy blue island.

4. New decorative glass pendants, under cabinet lighting, and wood flooring provide refined touches of warmth and detail.

Before Background Info: The layout of this kitchen in the Cambridge neighborhood on Geist Reservoir was limited. Cooking was a challenge for the family. The subdued material palette also needed to be freshened up to bring life into this dated kitchen.

Good grammar: Life of the party Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt Grammar: it’s everywhere. And as soon as someone identifies himself as an expert, you can algrammar guy most always safely assume he’s going to judge you anytime you end a sentence with a preposition.

I’m no grammar czar; I’m only here to help improve your grammar and make your life more awesome.

Good grammar is wonderful because it opens doors—to job interviews, romantic relationships and even elegant parties where people drink wine from bottles (I always thought it only came in boxes). By improving your grammar, your Facebook friends will rightly assume you’ve started wearing a gold-rimmed monocle while playing polo on your yacht. Fancy!

Let’s begin with your family—yeah, we’re going there. Specifically, when you want to sign your family’s collective name on a holiday card or get it laseretched on a fake rock for your front lawn.

How do you write it? Is it The Millers or The Miller’s?

Everyone likes a good party (after all, that’s why you’re improving your grammar, right?), and apostrophes are like sentence confetti, adding a fun flair to your scintillating syntax. But a misplaced

Moses and the Wilderness Rock Commentary by Don Knebel The southern half of modern Israel is an arid area known today as the Negev. The Negev includes the Wilderness travel of Zin, a desolate and rocky region that sheds light on the well-known story of Moses obtaining water from a rock.

According to the Bible, the Wilderness of Zin formed the southern boundary of the land that God had promised to the Israelites as Moses led them out of Egypt. Before God allowed the Israelites to enter their Promised Land, they spent about 40 years wandering in the wilderness, much of the time near an area called Kadesh or Kadesh Barnea. Although Josephus, the first century Jewish historian, believed Kadesh Barnea was in Petra, most scholars today believe Kadesh Barnea was on the southern end of the Wilderness of Zin, near the current border between Israel and Egypt.

The Book of Numbers says that while the Israelites were at Kadesh Barnea, God commanded Moses to speak to a rock to

obtain water for his parched followers and their animals. When Moses struck the rock twice with his staff and water poured out, God told Moses that he would never enter the Promised Land, and the Israelites continued their wandering until Moses died. A visit to the Negev provides an explanation for God’s punishment. The Wilderness of Zin includes steep walls comprising porous rock capable of absorbing water, which remains sealed in the rock by a limestone crust that forms over time. Seepage from cracks in the crust allows plants to grow in the rocky area. Bedouins who have lived in the Wilderness of Zin have long known that if they strike the rock and shatter the crust, trapped water will flow. Moses’ sin was apparently using a desert trick when God had asked him to accept a miracle.
