Runyan said ZYSA has asked the court to determine the amount ZYSA is owed.

FC Pride responded to the lawsuit on its website: “FC Pride is deeply disappointed by the actions taken by ZYSA and its board. Such actions are entirely contrary to the fundamental missions of each organization to serve and develop the youths of our communities through soccer. While the ZYSA has decided to spend its members’ fees to pursue baseless allegations, FC Pride remains committed to its mission to serve the community and provide developmentally appropriate environments for all levels of players. FC Pride will vigorously defend itself and its coaches while at the same time continue to focus on being the premier youth soccer organization in Central Indiana.”

Jones said he had no comment at this time regarding the pending lawsuits.

ZPD seeks candidates for Patrolman

The Zionsville Police Dept. is hiring for the position of patrolman. ZPD is accepting applications from all LAW ENFORCEMENT individuals meeting the minimum qualifications, including both non-certified and laterally transferring applicants. Applications will be accepted through Aug. 31. Lateral testing and interviews will begin on Sept. 10.

Non-certified applicant testing will begin on Sept. 22.

“We are anticipating filling five positions,” said Lt. Drake Sterling of ZPD. To be eligible for the program, previous employment may include any local, county, state, and/or school police that enforces state law and has arrest powers. Those applying are required to have current certification through Indiana Law Enforcement Academy or be eligible for a waiver from the certification.

Duties for hired officers include community

involvement, patrol presence, school security, monitoring traffic and other responsibilities.

“We provide 24-hour coverage for the town.

First and foremost, we want to have a presence in the community for community trust as well as a patrol presence to keep criminals out,” Sterling said.

The school resource officer positions for Zionsville Community Schools that were announced earlier this summer have already been filled, but Sterling said those positions are not always permanent and ZPD is open to applicants whose desired career path is to become an SRO. He said it is also not uncommon for additional ZPD officers to be at the schools making sure the campus is safe.

“Our day shift officers have to be very wellrounded,” Sterling said. “If we were to hire somebody (interested in becoming an SRO), they would be trained so that we could utilize them on the road first and then they would be offered a school position at a later time.”

ZPD has the option to reward lateral transfers at the discretion of the chief of police,

depending on applicants’ experience. Rewards could include pay increase, accelerated Field Training Program, a take-home vehicle and other potential benefits.

When hired, officers will receive benefits including paid vacation, health, dental and vision insurance, and more.

Successful candidates will be required to pass a background investigation, physical agility tests and polygraph examination. Upon hire, candidates will be required to adhere to Zionsville Police Dept. residency requirements.

Aspiring officers must be a high school graduate, possess an Indiana driver’s license and be a U.S. Citizen, be at least 21 years of age and not have reached age 36 by date of hire. Additional requirements are listed on the application form. If offered a position, candidates must obtain residence in Boone County or a bordering county.

ZCHS grad co-authors well-received graphic novel

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com It took more than two years to complete, but now Jay Fuller and his 10 fellow co-writers can relax. “The CardLITERATURE board Kingdom”, a graphic novel, hit stores in June and received a New York Times suggested summer reading recommendation that same month.

“It was a little surreal, mind-blowing, really cool.

It’s been a long project,” Fuller said Fuller, a 2003 Zionsville Community High School graduate.

“The Cardboard Kingdom” is a mixture of stories about a group of children from the same neighborhood who create cardboard Sell costumes and play out the life of characters. “‘The Cardboard Kingdom’ is full of everything I love: creativity, colorful characters, superheroes, epic fantasy quests and cardboard,” artist Chad Sell said. “I love that a

simple cardboard box can be made into anything with your creativity and imagination.

That magical realm of possibility is what started the whole project.”

Fuller graduated from Boston University in 2008 with a degree in film and television studies. He has lived in New York for the past four years. Sell and Fuller met in Chicago after admiring each other’s website comics for years. Sell imagined the plot of “The Cardboard Kingdom” and enlisted help from 10 other writers to flesh out the project.

The book explores heavy topics such as gender identity, bullying and socioeconomic situations, but all with a light touch, Fuller said.

“I think a lot of discussions about identity tend to happen later in life and aren’t explored in younger literature,” Fuller said.

“Growing up as a queer kid, I knew fairly young, around 7 or 8, that something was a little different than some of my friends.”

Sell said he hopes readers will finish the book with a new compassion and understanding that everyone has their own complicated story.

“The Cardboard Kingdom” is available at most bookstores and online retailers. Sell also created a costume contest for readers, free coloring pages for download and printable character cutouts for kids.

Silk Purse moves to South Main

Silk Purse Antiques has relocated several blocks south after a fire in the adjoining in September 2017 forced several RETAIL businesses to vacate.

Owner Becky Overmyer wasn’t sure what she would do after being in the same location for 17 years. She took the winter off to spend with family and returned in the spring to occupy the space previously occupied by Avalon Jewelers at 275 South Main St. “A lot more room, a lot more light and really a great location,” Overmyer said. “It all worked out for the best, as it always does in life.”

The larger space allows her to separate antiques by sections, such as horses, crystal and primitive items.

The fire and water damage ruined vintage clothing and linens but most of the glassware, crystal items and furniture were salvaged.

Overmyer is still in the process of bringing additional items into the store, many of which were moved to storage after the fire.

Overmyer, who grew up in Zionsville, remembers when there were more antique shops along Main Street.

“I was happy to keep that going because there aren’t too many of us now,” she said.

The name of her business is a tribute to Robert Bender, whose antique shop, The Sow’s Ear, was in the location before Overmyer.

“I made a Silk Purse out of a Sow’s Ear,” she said. “Mr. Bender loved that. I always felt his presence (at the shop).”

She debated whether to rename the shop again with the new move.

“I actually thought of changing it to The Phoenix, coming out of the ashes,” she said.

“But I decided I had a pretty good clientele by that time, so I should just keep it the Silk Purse.”

Officer Thomas Lucas was WILDLIFE just starting his shift July 12 when he received an interesting call.

“We come on at 2 p.m. and the call came in around 2:10 p.m. All the call said was that there was a deer caught in the fence behind a residence in the Sugarbush neighborhood,” Lucas said.

Lucas met up with K-9 officer Jacob Shelburne at the home. They were greeted by more than just one deer.

“We walked up and are expecting to see a full grown deer caught in the fence,” Lucas said. “Two women were cleaning the house for the homeowners while they were gone, and they had seen this mother deer and two babies out behind the property.

They were on the other side of a chain link fence.”

The mother deer and one of the fawns cleared the fence, but a small baby remained. It was clear to the officers it was tired and confused.

“It was very stressed out and kept running into the fence over and over again,” Lucas said. “It couldn’t find a way around it.

just worn itself out. It was laying on the ground next to them, panting. The women were trying to give it water.”

Lucas and Shelburne continued to monitor the fawn and then decided it was time to move it. The mother deer watched from the tree line.

“We picked it up and walked it down the hill to bring it to the mom,” Lucas said. “We put it down in the bushes and then it took off.”

The mother was reunited with her fawn and all three scampered off. Lucas said he was happy to help facilitate the wildlife family reunion.

Z’CAMP STUDENTS LEARN SKILLS, LANGUAGES Z’Camp at Zionsville West Middle School runs from May through July each summer. This year, approximately 175 students participated in 10 weeks of camp each day. The final session concluded July 30. Students were divided into 12 camper groups, led by Zionsville Community Schools staff and college and high school students.

Campers participated in activities such as fishing, tennis, swimming, arts and crafts, American Sign Language, gardening, therapy dogs, track and field and STEM and activities. Walking a tightrope is difficult, especially if there is little to hold onto. Each teammate needs to lean on the other. The team has to make it all the way around a tightrope course without any member touching the ground. The course gets harder as the players proceed because the ropes become less helpful. Outreach ministries can take many forms, and sometimes it’s as simple as playing games.

Zionsville Presbyterian Church recently entered into a strategic partnership with Str8Up Ministries.

Str8Up has a serious mission – mentoring teens to reach their potential by emphasizing character, responsibility and excellence. The ministry’s method is mostly fun and involves playing games at summer camp. Located on 64th St. on the north side of Indianapolis, the camp sits in a natural environment that includes woods, a lake and considerable grassy areas for athletics. The camp also has an indoor basketball court as well as a place for horses.

Although fun, games are selected on the basis of their ability to grow character. They emphasize teamwork and problem-solving and provide an opportunity to burn off extra energy. ZPC volunteers help organize the games and serve food.

Sometimes, the volunteers serve as referees, while other times they dive right into the game. The kids come from all across the north side of Indianapolis. Str8up aims to help kids who have had limited opportunities.

The art of mini vacations Commentary by Ward Degler My wife and I don’t get to take vacations much these days. The big reason is the expense. Everything costs PLAIN TALK more today than it did a few years ago – airfare, hotels, rental cars, dining out. And when was the last time we saw gas prices below two bucks a gallon?

Rather than bemoan all of this, however, Jeanne and I have come up with a solution.

We take two-hour vacations. Here is how it works: If we are going to run errands, we lock up the house, pile into the car and head out.

On the trip there, we look at the scenery as though we have never seen it before.

“Oh, look, those folks are building a deck at the side of their house.” We’ve seen it a dozen times before, of course, but not like today. Today, we are on vacation.

“Yes, and check out that neat white fence across the street.”

“Very pretty, and it sets off their lawn beautifully.” The fence has been there as long as we’ve lived here, but today we are seeing it as part of our vacation.

An extended vacation may take us to the

east side of town to visit family. On the return trip we may take a different route.

Things look fresh that way. Just like when you are on vacation.

Sometimes, we get lost. Our special vacation route may take us through unfamiliar parts of the city, and more than once we have wound up following a maze of streets to a dead end in a cul-de-sac.

We take note of lawns, driveways, architecture, flowerbeds and landscaping – especially trees. On some of our vacation trips the dead ash trees have already been removed, while in other places they remain upright, bare and tragic.

Sometimes, we include a stop for lunch or coffee as part of our vacation. We take note of the really good places so we can recommend them to our friends.

Sure, I know this is slightly silly, and I’d be happy to talk about it. But I have to run to the post office, so we’ll be gone on vacation for awhile.

Advocacy in East Africa Ribe Project aims to provide support system for Ugandan tribe

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com The Acholi Tribe of northern Uganda have a saying, “Kulu pong ki jange,” which means, “A water well gets full when many small sources flow into COVER STORY it.” Zionsville resident and University High School’s Director of Learning Support Services Brett Krieble wants to do just that for a Ugandan community with the launch of The Ribe Project.

A nonprofit founded by Krieble, The Ribe Project provides vocational skills, such as dress-making, bead-making, sandal- and handbag bag-making and instruction on how to raise poultry and pigs, to women from the Acholi community in and around the Ugandan town of Gulu.

Ribe means “unity” in Acholi. The Ribe Project also will offer business education classes to help women learn how to plan a budget, determine overhead costs and market their products.

Krieble said she spent much of her time as a full-time mom, but when she returned to teaching in 2007, her interest in global issues began to grow.

“The fact that something as important as 30,000 children being abducted as child soldiers and over 1.5 million people internally displaced in Uganda was basically unknown here in the west, was an eye-opener for me,” Krieble said.” I felt called to learn more and tell their stories. I think once you begin to become involved in humanitarian issues, your heart just leads you further and further down what is, unfortunately for the world, a never-ending path.”

In 2008, Krieble met Akena Boni, one of the 30,000 children kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group operating in northern Uganda.

Boni was traveling with Invisible Children, an organization dedicated to ending the longest running war in East Africa, and came to speak at UHS. Boni’s visit came after Krieble’s daughter, Haley Krieble, entered UHS into a Schools for Schools fundraising campaign and competition after hearing about the Invisible Children organization through her favorite band, Fall Out Boy. Haley is a board member for The Ribe Project.

helping women and girls across the world.

She serves as a Youth Advocate at Prevail, Inc. and provides support to children who have experienced sexual abuse.

“The resiliency in women and children drive me,” Haley said. “Women are wonderfully powerful souls and deserve to be supported through all aspects of their lives.”

In 2008, Krieble and her daughter launched the Global Citizens Club, a group dedicated to raising awareness about Invisible Children, at UHS. Brett now calls Boni her Ugandan son, and he calls her “mum.” Two years ago, Boni asked Krieble to name his daughter, Aber Harper. Boni is the Ugandan director for The Ribe Project and wants his daughter and the young girls in his community to have many opportunities as they grow.

Brett said it was when she met Boni’s mother, Abollo Kevin Florence, in January 2014 that she realized the need for The Ribe Project.

“We talked about what she would do to support herself if she had the means,” Krieble said. “Her dream was to open a pharmacy in her home to supply remedies for her village.

With a microfinance loan, she would have the means to change her life for the better.”

Krieble said more than a third of Ugandans live below the extreme poverty line at

$1.90 a day.

“Many of these women are desperate for ways to make outside income for their families,” Krieble said. “With so many villages surrounding the town of Gulu, there are plenty of opportunities to open small shops, even out of their homes, to make money.”

Brett said the cost to provide training to the women is approximately $75 for the sixmonth course. The price includes training, materials and teacher salaries.

Brett said although unemployment is high in the area, the cost of living is low by Western standards. According to Krieble, $250 would provide startup supplies and six months’ stall rental at the Gulu City Market; $200 would allow a woman to purchase a pair of pigs, fencing materials and feed for a year; and $100 would provide materials to make multiple handbags, sandals and beaded jewelry.

Niki Gates, a former UHS student and board member for The Ribe Project, said she loves learning about the culture and the struggles and triumphs of the communities in Uganda as well as helping young mothers achieve unity and economic stability. Gates leads fundraising efforts for Ugandan scholarship funds at UHS and has completed two years of national service with AmeriCorps.

“The southern half of Uganda is green and hilly and home to many tea and coffee plantations. Kampala is a huge, crowded and crazy city. But as you drive north from Kampala, the landscape changes dramatically. The land becomes very flat and towns are further apart.

When you get into Acholi country you begin to see the landscape dotted with its traditional round, thatch-roofed homes.

“Being from America, it’s so easy to identify the differences between us and them,” Gates said. “But there are so many similarities that connect us and can be used to help each other learn and grow, and that is one of the most empowering and magical experiences.”

Brett is pursuing a master’s in nonprofit administration and development. She will travel to Uganda soon to find a permanent site for The Ribe Project and plans to launch the project’s first program in spring 2019.

Brooklyn-born songwriter Vic Mizzy turned his considerable talents from popular music in the 1940s and ‘50s to the emerging medium of television in the 1960s.

Therein came some of his most memorable, if not significant, contributions, including the theme songs from “The Addams Family” and “Green Acres.” Thanks to long runs on the networks, followed by generations of re-runs and remakes, these simple tunes have earned a place in our collective memories.

In “Green Acres,” Mizzy uses just 76 words to lay out the tension between Eddie Albert’s Oliver Wendell Douglas, New York power attorney who hopes to commune more directly with nature, and Eva Gabor’s Lisa, who exclaims, “New York is where I’d rather stay – I get allergic smelling hay.”

Mizzy has outlined a central tenant of our evolving civilization: What is it to be a human in our natural state?

While an increasing number of us today seek urban densities, a generation ago the trend was to flee these confines to more suburban locales. Even further back, we had a preference for the rural. Even in our vacations, we further confuse the question.

Millions camp, sleeping under the open sky much as our ancestors did for centuries.

Others travel great distances to enjoy luxuries.

Yet, as our society continues to plod on, we hear echoes of our past. How do we reconcile our desire to contribute to Albert’s the chores and still enjoy Gabor’s the stores? Are we really getting back to nature if we are “glamping” in some Victorian safari tent? Is it a dodge or just a compromise to our conflicted selves?

By the time most of you are reading this, I will have essentially survived Summer 2018. Woo hoo! I return to the classroom Aug. 2, and while that means I HUMOR will soon be subjected to long days with other peoples’ sometimes smelly and usually angsty teenagers, it also means that in a few weeks, a beautiful yellow bus will come to collect my own precious angels. Can I get an amen?

Don’t get me wrong. We’ve had a great summer here at chez Wilson. Quality relaxation time, some fantastic vacations and plenty of Netflix binges. But enough already. Enough of the sleeping ‘til noon or three. Enough of the basement Fortnite marathons. Enough of our college kid all up in my grill. I don’t know about your family, but mine functions more smoothly with schedules and routines and expectations of punctuality and productiveness. My pathetic attempt at a chore chart did not cut it.

Bottom line? Everyone is fed up with everyone else. The girls have created a biochemical wasteland in their bathroom.

The boys have nearly come to blows over the third car. My husband Doo insists that I complete a honey-do list a mile long because “I’m on vacation.” Yes, I’m on vacation, which by definition means “no work.”

See what I mean? Even my partner-incrime is driving me bat-poo crazy. The only solution, my friends, is sweet academic imprisonment. We need places to be and things to do. We need homework and practices and bedtimes. We need our lives to return to normal. So though it may be blasphemous to say, I can’t wait for school to begin!

Get rid of property taxes Commentary by Donald Rainwater One of the hallmarks of a free society is property ownership. I was taught from an early age that home OPINION ownership was part of the American Dream. I have held that belief for most of my adult life, until recently, when I started examining property tax laws in Indiana.

I have come to realize that the American Dream actually is a modern version of the feudal system of Medieval Europe, when people were obligated to live on their lord’s land and give him homage, labor and a share of the produce in exchange for military protection. If they didn’t pay for the privilege of living on the land, they were expelled from the property.

What happens if you own property in Indiana and don’t pay your semi-annual homage to the state? Yep, you’re expelled from the property for failure to pay property taxes. Is that ownership? No, we are being granted the privilege of living on the land, as long as we pay our taxes.

That’s not ownership; that’s leasing.

The Indiana General Assembly says that our property taxes are capped at 1 percent of assessed value; then they reassess and raise the tax every year for as long as you inhabit the property. The 1-percent cap is a red herring. Property taxes keep rising and, if you cannot pay, you will be expelled.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Property taxes could be capped at 1 percent of the purchase price of the property and assessments could be abolished. Even better, property taxes could be converted to a 7-percent sales tax at the time of purchase. This would eliminate property forfeiture due to failure to pay property taxes, which wouldn’t exist. Then, we would truly own our property, like free people do.

My problems started after I disconnected my cable in the basement. I watch television downstairs while riding HUMOR my exercise bike, but if the plot gets exciting, I sometimes forget to pedal and by the time the show is over, I’ve only “traveled” about 28 feet — not even a first down. It was time to get rid of the distraction.

When the cable company got my receiver box back in the mail, they thought I wanted to discontinue my entire service package, and the next day all my televisions displayed the message, CUSTOMER DISABLED, which is a very unfortunate way to phrase my predicament. To fix this problem, they needed to know all the numbers on the backs of all the cable boxes on all five TVs. I have a great photo of my wife scrunched behind our big-screen TV, nudged in between a giant fern and a china cabinet, trying to read the tiny numbers and talk on her cellphone at the same time.

We were told by the customer service rep that the soonest they could come out to fix this was five days. No cable television for five days was scary. Mary Ellen and I love each other; we just weren’t sure how we’d fill all that time.

While on the phone with our cable rep, I asked if she had any suggestions to reduce my cable bill. This is not what she really said, but how it sounded to me: “If you switch to Direct TV, it will lower your bill, but it’s only a short-term promotional rate … or you can just stream your shows, but then you can’t use your DVR. Or you can buy an Apple TV box but you have to buy them for all the TVs, unless your TVs are smart … or you could subscribe to Hulu, or get a dish, assuming we can get service there. You could also watch TV over the internet, but you may not get any local stations without an antenna.”

Finally, she told me: “We also have a website where you can diagnose your specific problem and find a solution all by yourself. “ By the way, I think that’s also the future of medicine.

Boosterville acquired by Beyond

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Fundraising app Boosterville, created and tested in Zionsville, has a new name, a new support staff and a new zWORKS home base.

Renamed Chip In, the company has been acquired by Beyond but will continue to be operated by founders Pam and Tom Cooper, who are considered graduates of the local coworking space zWORKS. Beyond offers operational resources and financial technology for small and mid-sized businesses.

“It was a great accelerant for us to now have resources and teams and marketing people (at Beyond),” Pam Cooper said. “It’s amazing going from a scrappy little startup team to a large organization that’s got deep pockets and plenty of great talent on board already.”

The app was initially created by the Coopers as a way for nonprofits to raise funds without selling items door to door. Through the concept, businesses pay a portion of sales by registered customers back to that customer’s preferred nonprofit organization.

Beyond’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J., but much of its workforce is scattered throughout the U.S. The Coopers will work remotely from southern Illinois.

The founder of Beyond, Robert Carr, had experimented with a similar application in New Jersey several years ago when Pam Cooper said they were researching possible competitors.

“Our philosophical alignment and our mission-driven beliefs just completely lined up,” Pam Cooper said.

Processed foods are not typical transporters of the salmonella bacteria, but consumers were forced FOOD SAFETY to return or dispose of four varieties of Goldfish crackers when Pepperidge Farm announced a voluntary recall July 23.

The affected flavors included Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel.

According to the Pepperidge Farm website, the company was notified by one of its ingredients suppliers that whey powder used in a seasoning had been recalled by the whey powder manufacturer, due to the potential presence of salmonella.

“Pepperidge Farm initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers. The products were distributed throughout the United States. No illnesses have been reported. No other Pepperidge Farm products in the U.S. are subject to this recall,” the site said.

The recalled whey powder was produced and distributed by Associated Milk Producers Inc. Ritz crackers, owned by Mondelez Global LLC, and Swiss Rolls, owned by Flowers Foods Inc., also were recalled for the same reason. AMPI stated that all products shipped to the marketplace tested negative for salmonella.

Local Kroger stores pulled affected items

as soon as the recall was made. Eric Halvorson, community relations director for the Indianapolis division of Kroger, said the company has not yet compiled a total number of the affected products pulled from shelves.

“In these situations, our priority is always to respond as quickly as possible and remove the products in question. We are determined to protect the health and safety of our customers,” Halvorson said.

Boone County Health Dept. Administrator Cindy Murphy confirmed no illnesses have been reported. She said there can be a brief lag time between when a person falls ill, seeks treatment, is tested and then medical entities report the test results. Clinical laboratories, hospitals and medical providers are required to report certain bacterial contamination and diseases found through lab work. The results are reported to the patient’s county of residence.

“We have a statewide registry system,” Murphy said. “When something like salmonella is reported (in a Boone County resident), our nurses begin investigation immediately.”

Salmonella symptoms occur six to 72 hours after a person is affected and can last up to seven days.

“There are unfortunately several outbreaks at any given time,” Murphy said. “We have a link to the FDA website on our own website, so persons can see a complete list.”

Blake’s Smiles supports autism causes

By Rick Morwick • rick@youarecurrent.com Blake Dauby is an accomplished singer, a skilled musician and an avid creator of music videos.

GIVING BACK In addition, he is a dancer, video editor and a gifted craftsman who loves nothing more than making people smile — literally — through his art.

His signature items are handmade puzzle-piece smiles, forged in his pottery studio. He gifts them to anyone in need of a smile.

“You keep it as long as you need it or pass it on to someone else who needs it,” said Dauby, a 20-year-old Carmel resident whose varied talents and eclectic tastes belie a lifelong condition that doesn’t deter him.

Dauby has autism.

“Blake has never let this disorder slow him down,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father. “He is very active in his community, school and various clubs. He has participated in show choir, orchestra, Best Buddies, student government, dance marathon and Carmel High School Television, just to name a few things.”

Of all things, Blake is probably best known for his ceramics work, a skill he developed at Carmel High School — and one that led to his recent founding of Blake’s Smiles, a nonprofit that raises awareness and funds for groups that support autism causes.

to charities by selling and auctioning his ceramic pieces, discovered his artistic gift after taking a ceramics class at Carmel High School, where he graduated in 2017.

“We reluctantly signed him up thinking he might not make it past his first day,” Steve Dauby said. “Four years later, with the help of his special aides and patient art teacher Ms. (Sarah) Wolff, he has made incredible clay pieces and has been privileged to have several of his pieces exhibited in annual art fairs.”

Buoyed by Blake’s affinity for ceramics, his parents, Steve and Barbara, set up a studio for him in the basement of the family home. There, he creates everything from vessel vases to pots to Sgraffito drape molds to, of course, smiles. “(I) took an art class in high school and made some cool stuff,” Blake said. “(I enjoy) shaping stuff, bowls and cups, on the wheel.”

Besides creating ceramic art, Blake also paints, plays guitar, violin and piano and sings the national anthem at CHS basketball and lacrosse games and at autism events. He also works 12 to 15 hours per week at Walgreens on Michigan Road and dedicates time to establishing Blake’s Smiles, which derives its name from his early childhood habit of asking people who weren’t smiling the same question: “Is it fun?”

a visual learner and struggled socially,” Steve said. “He would famously ask anyone he would see without a smile on their face, ‘Is it fun?’ Most people had no clue what or why he was asking this, but it was his way to calm himself that everything was OK if people did not have a smile on their face.”

On Aug. 3, Blake will participate in the DOZ Charitable Foundation’s outreach program, which in the past five years has donated more than $100,000 to local charities. Dauby O’Connor & Zaleski is an accounting firm in Carmel, where Steve Dauby is a partner.

During the program, part of a DOZ recruiting event for accounting students, Blake will speak about and share his art pieces. Everyone will literally leave with a smile.

“The students will actually go home with one that Blake has already made,” said Nicole Wright, assistant controller for DOZ. “They can take them back with them and share the smiles.”

Dealing with sensory issues Diagnosed with autism as a young child, Blake Dauby — and his family — endured many of the trials and tribulations associated with the disorder.

“Like most kids on the autism spectrum, growing up Blake had numerous sensory issues,” said Steve Dauby, Blake’s father.

“Many of these issues can be crippling and alter not only the child but loved ones and care givers. Most refer to the child as being on sensory overload. One of Blake’s many sensory issues was smell and taste.

He would not allow his hands, face or lips to touch anything with an odor, different smell or wasn’t clear in appearance.”

In time, Blake became involved in multiple activities, including music, clubs, student government and art. He looks forward to a future that includes his job at Walgreens, making and editing music videos, overseeing his nonprofit Blake’s Smiles and refining his art.

Oh, and one other thing.

“Having fun,” said Blake, who has three sisters Stephanie, Amanda and Samantha, and a brother, Matt. His mother is Barbara Dauby.

The winner’s art will be incorporated into the poster, which will be for sale at the CCA Gallery Sept. 1. The gallery started in Broad Ripple, moved to Zionsville in 2002 and to Carmel in 2015.

Hamilton County Artists’ Association will return to downtown Noblesville Aug. 4 with the annual Art Fair on the EVENT Square from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Approximately 35 vendors and juried artists will set up shop around the courthouse square. Artwork will be for sale.

“There are 35 booths in tents around the perimeter of the courthouse square,” HCAA President Kay Richards said. “Ninth Street will be closed so that people will be able to wander around better.”

Richards said art items range from pottery to jewelry to different types of painting.

“Everything is for sale, including the pottery, jewelry and textiles as well as the paintings,” Richards said. “It’s fantastic. I’ve seen some of the things they have done. I am familiar with these artists and it’s very high quality and really very interesting work.”

The longtime Noblesville PAINTINGS resident specializes in oil paintings of landscapes in the United States and Europe.

“I’ve been painting about 40 years, fulltime for about 20 years,” Harden said.

Harden, 52, and Carol Wagner, a Carmel resident, will hold a meet-the-artists session at Art on Main, 111 W. Main St., Suite 140, Carmel, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 2. Light refreshments will be served. Harden and Wagner are the gallery’s featured artists for August.

“We’ll talk about travels and voyages all over the world,” said Harden, who has been associated with Art on Main since it opened in September 2017. “We’ll have paintings from the Midwest and wine country. I’ll have about 20 pieces up and Carol will have 10 to 15.”

Harden, who has a home studio in Noblesville, also has his work displayed in a gallery in Fort Wayne.

Wagner is retiring from the gallery after this month.

“I’ll still be painting but more or less for pleasure,” said Wagner, who has been painting with oils for 10 years.

Wagner’s specialty is still life paintings, but this show will feature landscapes.

“Mine are primarily around water. That will be the big difference in this show (from Harden’s paintings),” Wagner said. “The paintings are either from my travels or my friends’ travels. I really love rivers, and probably three or four of my pictures are rivers and streams.”

Pianist Lorie Line to perform

That comes in handy on CONCERT the concert stage.

“I’m most known for doing a medley of requests,” Line said. “People shout out requests and I write it down.

Then I play about 15 minutes of all 20 to 25 songs that people love. It’s all off-the-cuff by ear. It’s something I’m known for doing.”

Line will perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Her tour is called “The Lorie Line Simply Grand Solo Piano Tour.”

“When I do the holiday tour, I bring a pop chamber orchestra and a special featured vocalist,” Line said. “When I do this tour, this is for diehard fans that really just love me. They love it because there is nobody else on the stage, it’s just me.”

Line performs 90 minutes with no intermission.

Traditionally, Line said she comes to the Indianapolis area for her holiday show. She had been doing the holiday show for 29 years.

“Most of my material is non-holiday, so everyone gets to hear their favorites,” Line said. “The fun thing for me is I have a brand new album. It’s all the crazy stuff that’s (been) really popular the last 10 years, everything from Sam Smith to Ed Sheeran to Adele to even some fun things like ‘Game of Thrones.’”

Harod Spring’s drinking test Commentary by Don Knebel Harod Spring lies at the foot of Mount Gilboa, about 15 miles south of Nazareth in northern Israel. The victorious TRAVEL soldiers for a decisive Biblical battle in the nearby Jezreel Valley were chosen by how they drank from the spring.

According to the Book of Judges, nomadic Midianites from the east had repeatedly invaded Israel on camels, killing Israelites and stealing their crops and animals. On one occasion, a large contingent of Midianites was encamped in the Jezreel Valley, preparing for another raid. Gideon, a local leader, assembled 32,000 men at the base of Mount Gilboa, planning a direct attack. God appeared to Gideon, telling him to send home 22,000 men who were afraid to fight the better equipped and more numerous Midianites. God then told Gideon to observe the remaining troops as they drank from Harod Spring, which flows from Mount Gilboa through a cavern opening. Three hundred of Gideon’s men, apparently prone, lapped water from the spring like dogs, using their

cupped hands. The rest of the 10,000 men knelt to drink. At God’s instruction, Gideon sent the kneelers back to their homes and trained the lappers for a daring raid on the Midianites.

One night, the 300 raiders, divided into groups of 100, surrounded and then entered the Midianite camp, carrying torches and blowing horns. The startled Midianites scurried from their camp in all directions, killing each other in the ensuing melee. The men Gideon had sent home, joined by other Israelites, eventually annihilated the lost and widely dispersed Midianites. Gideon himself killed two captured Midianite kings whose earlier victims had included his brothers.

Today, Harod Spring is within Ma’ayan Harod National Park. A park sign tells about Gideon’s famous drinking test, but a fence in front of the cavern opening prevents visitors from trying out alternative techniques.

If I were to hypothetically win a sailboat, I’d sell it as quickly as possible. I’d put that sail up for sale. The difference between the words sail, sale, sell and cell are salient. And, before you can accuse me of being a sellout, let me assure you – like the theoretical sailboat – my argument will hold water.

First, let’s tackle the difference between sail and sale. Sail can be used as both a noun and a verb. As a noun, sail refers to a piece of fabric attached to a boat to help steer it using wind. As a verb, sail refers to a trip taken on a sailboat.

A sale is a noun that refers to the act of selling, specifically when a good or ser-

vice is traded for some kind of currency.

For example, mattress stores all think it’s a great idea to have big sales over Labor Day weekend. It’s as if the store owners all got together and decided to celebrate hard work by giving people a great excuse to do the exact opposite.

Sale is different from sell. Sell is a verb; it is the act of working toward the goal of making the sale. You can sell a boat. Once you sell the boat, you have made a sale.

A cell is a noun. It can refer to a few different things. A cell is a small room in which a prisoner is locked. A cell also is a small group acting within a larger organization. A cell is a basic structural unit of all organisms. A cell is a battery. “Cell” is short for “cellular.”

I hope my clarification of sail, sale, sell and cell went swimmingly, which is more than I can say about my own swimming skills.
