National Night Out – Whiteston will host a National Night Out party from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, 6210 Veterans Dr.. ZPC approves Walmart plans after judge mandate What happened: After nearly a decade-long legal battle, the Zionsville Plan Commission approved the Walmart Stores Inc. primary plat and development plan at its July 18 meeting in a unanimous vote.

What it means: Walmart filed a lawsuit against the ZPC in 2006 after commissioners denied a proposal to construct a retail center along Michigan Road. The July 18 ZPC approval is in response to a recent court ruling from Judge Steven Nation mandating that the commission approve Walmart’s development plan proposal and primary plat of approximately 22 acres.

What’s next: Walmart officials have said they are reviewing their options and have not indicated whether or not they still intend to build on the site.

What happened: Commissioners approved a petition to subdivide 77 acres, along with a development plan, at 8810 and 8811 Whitestown Rd. into a 12-lot subdivision.

What it means: The DeRossi Estates project has come before the plan commission at five previous meetings this year and was granted continuances because of several alterations to the development plan, including zoning and development standard variances. The lots are zoned in the rural low density single and two family residential district and will be developed into single family homes.

DIVORCE – WHAT TO EXPECT: College Expenses In Indiana, in many family law cases, in addition to receiving normal child support, either parent can request the court to order the other parent to help contribute towards post-secondary educational expenses once the child nears college. In any Dissolution of Marriage, Post-Dissolution, or Paternity action, the court will almost always enter a child support obligation to be paid by one of the parties (typically, the noncustodial parent). The Indiana Child Support Guidelines are presumed to be applicable in every such proceeding and govern the payment and determination of child support. The Guidelines are based on the “Income Shares” theory; more specifically, that both parents are responsible for the support of a child based upon their respective income shares. However, once the child is emancipated, and if college expenses are not discussed prior to emancipation, one parent may be left with the burden of post-secondary educational expenses, without contribution from the other parent.

Effective July 1, 2012, the Indiana State Legislature reduced the age of emancipation from 21 to 19 years of age. Being mindful of typical family circumstances, the legislature wanted to more fairly recognize families where the college-aged child was residing at school and spending little to no time with the custodial parent, who was receiving support. However, this change has had a major effect upon a parent’s ability to request post-secondary education expenses. Thus, if you have a current support order and a child nearing the age of 19, you should consult an attorney in order to determine your options for emancipation and requesting post-secondary education expenses. Plan accordingly and preserve your right to request such expenses prior to the child’s 19th birthday.

Unlike child support, post-secondary educational expenses are not guaranteed, thereby making each situation fact-specific.

When determining post-secondary education expenses, courts will consider several factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, the child’s aptitude and ability to attend college, which determines the child’s college selections. Additionally, courts consider the child’s ability to contribute to educational expenses either through work, scholarships, grants, obtaining loans, and obtaining other sources of financial aid reasonably available to the child and each parent.

Typically, courts are looking to the child to help contribute towards their future in some way. Finally, and arguably, the most significant factor the courts consider and place a lot of emphasis is on a parent’s ability to contribute toward such college expenses. Thus, the amount each party in a post-secondary education matter is ordered to pay will be very fact-sensitive and can vary significantly depending upon the aforementioned factors.

The Guidelines suggest typical expenses, for which parents can be expected to help contribute towards college. In most cases, typical post-secondary educational expenses shall include expenses such as, tuition, room and board, and books and fees. With proper preparation, based on this new legislation, families can plan ahead and help reduce any anxiety about the allocation of college expenses.

Commentary by Ward Degler My old dog, Brutie, is slowing down.

He’s 14 now, and repeated ear infections have robbed him of his plain talk hearing, cataracts have dimmed his vision and arthritis and hip dysplasia have put a hitch in his get-along so that it takes a couple of minutes to get the hind quarters in gear after the front end starts moving.

It also has created a little incontinence, so he has an accident from time to time. This seems to confuse and embarrass him since he knows he’s been potty trained since puppyhood. I try not to be too harsh with him, because I know I too am growing older and slowing down.

Brutie sleeps more now as well. Old dogs seem to do this. Maybe they think they will age more slowly when sleeping. Still, if I fail to let him out before I go to bed, he will wake me in the middle of the night with a kind of cross-legged sense of urgency. I guess old dogs do that, too, and I’m reminded that I too have to get up in the middle of the night from time to time.

During the day when he is not sleeping he seems to be at odds with life. He’ll ask to go

out, but three minutes later will want to come back in. I think he doesn’t know what he wants, he just knows he doesn’t have it.

When I have work to do outside, on the other hand, Brutie is like a young dog again.

He will run pell-mell from one end of the yard to the other, investigate and give a perfunctory dig to a couple of mole tunnels and spend long minutes exploring the backyard burn pile.

I know his days are numbered. But, so are mine. I don’t go exploring like I once did, and I can’t remember the last time I ran pell-mell anywhere. I, too, am slowing down.

But, as it stands, the two of us are still in the middle of living. And just the other day I looked him in the eye and quoted Robert Frost, who reminded us that we still have promises to keep and miles to go before we sleep.

I asked him if he understood that, and he nuzzled in for an ear scratching. I took that as a yes.

School board honors lacrosse player

The Zionsville Community Schools board of trustees met July 11 to honor a student athlete and get a preview of the district’s new website, among other matters.

The board recognized Zionsville Community High School 2016 graduate Sydney Blake for her accomplishments on the varsity lacrosse team and in the classroom.

“U.S. Lacrosse, which is our national governing body, each year designates four all-Americans and four academic all-Americans from each state,” Zionsville lacrosse coach Laura Rogers said. “Sydney was recognized as an athletic all-American, but more importantly, she was chosen as an all-academic allAmerican, which there are fewer than 400 in the entire country.”

Blake, who moved to Indiana from Minnesota, was first introduced to the sport in Zionsville.

“I just wanted to thank my coaches,” Blake said. “They really brought all of that to me and were the reason I could become the player that I was and the player I will continue to be. Zionsville will always be my home and will always be my start to my love of lacrosse.”

In other school board news, the board saw a preview of the new Zionsville Community Schools website. Staff spent the majority of the summer working on the new design, which aims to replace the existing site later this year.

“We’re going to have a very streamlined website coming up, and it’s going to be replacing our old, out-of-date and not-so-secure website very soon,” Chief Technology Coordinator Dan Layton said. “We’ve got some really neat pieces coming in terms of picture slides, and there’s going to be video as well and some other surprises.”

The board unanimously approved a contract renewal for the continued employment of ZCS Supt. Dr. Scott Robison.

Tutors needed for homeless students – School on Wheels seeks to recruit, train and place new volunteers immediately and for the 2016 fall semester to provide tutoring to Indianapolis youth experiencing homelessness. Vision disorders are often "silent," with no outward symptoms, and are not always caught by school screenings.

Nature center planned to be used for ZCS offices

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zion Nature center opened in 2002 in a building owned by Zionsville Community Schools, but continued growth in the student population is causing the district to look for space to expand wherever it can.

According to a report released by the Indiana Business Research Council, ZCS is projected to have 8,475 students in the district for the 2025-2026 school year, an approximate 30 percent increase from the 2015-2016 school year.

“It is my expectation that the (nature center) space will be used for offices,” ZCS Supt. Scott Robison stated.

“Our enrollment continues to grow, and every space the district owns must be Robison maximized to avoid building or leasing until absolutely necessary.”

With that in mind, officials from the Town of Zionsville began looking for other options to house its nature center. They approved a solution in late 2015: a new building near Heritage Trail Park that will house the nature center and also could serve as a temporary or backup town hall, if needed.

Zionsville Supt. of Parks & Recreation Matt Dickey said he expects the move to happen sometime in the spring of 2017, although the official timeline won’t be set until after the town awards bids Dickey for the project. Until then, he and Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock are working to plan the new space and coordinate the logistics of a move that includes live animals, tanks and rotating exhibits.

The new, 5,000-square-foot building has approximately 1/3 more space than the nature center’s current building, but Dickey said it will equate to approximately twice as much accessible space for the public. The current building includes an attic and basement that are not open to the public in an aging building that once served as the ZCS central office.

Dickey said he’s most looking forward to having the nature center housed in a building designed for that use, but he will miss a few things about the old space.

“There was a certain cottage kind of charm to our current location that we won’t have, and it will take time to develop some things, like the outside garden,” he said. “We’ll certainly miss our large, overhead shade-tree canopy.”

slowly, with stored exhibits being relocated first and animals last, with as little disruption to service as possible.

“Our hope at least is not to close it at all,” he said. “There may be some different experiences available depending on when (visitors) would come during the moving process.”

Once the nature center is in its new home, the town hopes to expand its hours. Because it is currently on Eagle Elementary property, its open hours are restricted to when visitors won’t disrupt the school day.

ZCS prepares for school year by hiring wellness teachers, other positions

Squier said they looked for another model around the nation and couldn’t find it.

“So we’re going to build it from the ground up,” she said.

As a result of the 2010 referendum not passing, ZCS eliminated the physical education teacher positions in the elementary schools. The 2012 referendum victory was not large enough to reinstitute the program.

In November, Zionsville voters passed a six-year school-funding referendum, which maintained a tax rate of 24 cents per $100 of net-assessed value. As part of that, the district was able to hire a physical-education/wellness teacher for each of the five elementary schools.

Since the 2011-12 school year, the classroom teachers had to pick up the slack by instructing physical education and wellness.

“It’s a broader focus than just a traditional, physical education course, so we’re lucky to have our physical education courses under the moniker of Wellness 360 being taught by trained professionals,” Robison said. “It’s an amalgam of health and wellness, touching across lifelong fitness and responsibility for one’s own numbers, knowing that movement is incredibly important not only to health but to cognition. We know from the research when kids move, their brain functions elevate. We want to foster that in a new and better way.”

Foremost, the referendum victory meant that 87 additional teaching positions were sustained.

We need to try to find a way to generate excitement and knowledge about it.”

FROM THE backshop Clinton lacking regard for women If anyone out there was watching the GOP convention July 18, we’re sure you were struck by the emotional speech by Patricia Smith, mother of Sean Smith, who died in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi.

She pointedly blamed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for not providing the necessary security that fateful night. She said Clinton “looked me squarely in the eye and told me a video was responsible” for the attack. We now know that’s not the case; clearly, it was a terrorist attack. We couldn’t help but feel the anguish and pain Smith still is suffering in the wake of her tragic loss. We, too, can feel the betrayal she experienced after being lied to by Clinton. Wanting the last word, Clinton then accused Smith of lying. Can you imagine? It really gets one thinking: After all we hear about Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s polling deficit among women voters, this incident is telling - enormously so - as to what Clinton really thinks of women. To lie to a grieving mother is beyond the pale. While politics can be a brutal game, we believe strongly that this incident fully demonstrates once and for all that the only woman Clinton cares about is herself.

••• To no one’s surprise, the town recently denied a Zionsville’s couple’s bid to continue using their property as an Airbnb offering.

Our reaction is mixed. While we certainly wouldn’t want such an operation as our next-door neighbor, the decision does fly against our tenet of letting the free market reign. Laws protect against this activity to keep high-end communities just that.

Stupid and evil Commentary by Terry Anker One wonders if Gutenberg and his contemporaries imagined the impact that their printing press might have on the world – namely, it freed the flow of information in a game-changing way. More people could claim a voice; and, more people could hear it. Certainly, there must have been some discussion as the stylish folk of 1439 peered over the craft ale they were sampling from their distinctive lead tankards from the new maker’s space around the corner. What does it all mean? What will this new “social” media bring us?

So, now that we are collectively 600 years older and wiser, what have we learned?

The newest “social” media allows for an even more liberal movement of information than did Mr. G’s original device. Even as we contemplate the changes afoot in the order of things now that the New York Times has fewer readers than Kylie Jenner, those changes are marching on. Articulate and profane alike, we all have a voice. Unvarnished

and unmitigated, we can all be heard!

In a symphony of ever increasing cacophony, should we raise our voices even louder to ensure that WE ARE HEARD ABOVE THE RABBLE. OUR VOICE MATTERS! LISTEN TO ME! Gutenberg printed what he believed to be the most important ideas – and hoped to share them widely. In a quick survey of modern social media, it seems that one is more likely confronted with hate and bigotry than with the advancing of affirmative ideas. “You are stupid! Your candidate is stupid. This recipe is stupid. You must be too stupid to see how stupid you are! We’re only saying you’re stupid to be nice – we really think you are stupid AND evil.”

In a world where everyone is in the ring, is it possible to imagine that most hits will be above the belt?

A few weeks back, I wrote a column about one of my sons deciding not to make his Catholic confirmation. I humor actually thought nothing more of it until I started receiving a ton of emails, both good and bad. What was my take-away? People are reading me!

During the summer! And if they are getting worked up over a rather non-controversial issue like a teenager’s choice of faith, imagine what would happen if I gave them something really write-the-editor worthy.

Like if I addressed the upcoming election and why I’ll be voting for Hillary. Yes, Hillary! Of course, politics can turn nasty in a heartbeat, so perhaps I should withhold my rather low opinion of “The Donald” and discuss matters of a less divisive nature.

Would my support of gay marriage strike a chord in our conservative suburban bubble? I like to think not, but I know my audience. Maybe I could write at length on the reasons I’m both Catholic and pro-choice, a seemingly glaring contradiction until I explained my views. Which, unfortunately, I won’t be doing right now because I have bigger fish to fry. Another time, then.

I could always rant about the deplorable state of public education and the appalling treatment of its teachers, but people around here tend to put in their ear plugs whenever that topic is broached. Maybe I should stick with mom issues, which are, without question, my forte. I could easily pen a whole book on why epidurals, infant formula and letting your 2-year old watch Nemo for 17 minutes so that you can swallow a pretzel nugget and sponge-bathe your pits are all OK. Seriously. It’s maternal survival before pre-school applications, my friends, and don’t let anyone shame you into doing otherwise.

I feel as though I’m just getting started. I have yet to mention immunizations, Black Lives Matter, gun control or Daenerys Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne, all of which I strongly support.

Chiropractor serves in Nicaragua

By Megan Melton • news@currentzionsville.com Under an archway at the entrance of a very small Christian school in Grundy, Va., was a message that David Swiney passed every day from preschool through 12th grade.

“Truly, I say to you, as giving back you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me,” Matthew 24:44.

Swiney, now a chiropractor at Dynamic Spine and Fitness in Zionsville, said that this verse quoting Jesus is what has stuck with him throughout his whole life.

“The lesson is worth passing on,” he said.

Swiney recently went to Nicaragua on a mission trip with a group from Common Ground Church to help and serve. There, he and his teammates distributed food to widows, led Bible studies and passed out soccer balls and other toys to children.

However, he used his professional training to do a little more. He took a portable chiropractic table along and made adjustments and provided other assistance for the locals.

“I also accompanied the staff doctor doing medical clinics in several villages,” the Zionsville resident said.

he said, was there was no most interesting part.

That what holds us together is so abundantly more than all the things that we let divide us? … Or the fact that if you are a Gringo with a large beard, you are almost a celebrity when you walk through the market?”

Zionsville Street Dance will add a kid-focused concert this year as part of the annual dance family fun party on Main Street Aug. 6.

Estimated to have started in the 1970s, Zionsville Street Dance has evolved through the decades adding food and kids activities and has grown to attract 5,000 people annually.

Roughly a dozen food trucks and local restaurants will sell a variety of dining options with beer and wine available on Oak and Cedar streets.

This year, a special kids concert featuring Zionsvillebased children’s performer Mr. Daniel will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. prior to the main act, Polka Boy, taking the stage from 7 to 11 p.m.

The stage, which backs up to Poplar Street, was moved from Main Street to accommodate the growing crowds.

“The event has grown so much that we needed to increase the space of the event,” Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Johns-Cole said.

The event is one of the larger fundraisers for the chamber, which uses the funds for events, services and resources for chamber and community members.

“It’s one of the most fun (fundraisers) we do,” JohnsCole said.

For Debbie and Greg McGrath of Zionsville, the Street Dance holds special meaning. The couple has attended every Street Dance since 2000 and incorporated the event into their wedding three years ago.

“It’s more than just the music now,” Debbie said. “It’s fun, it’s a perfect reflection of Zionsville.”

The McGraths plan to celebrate their anniversary there again this year.

The $10 tickets are available online at ZionsvilleChamber.org, at the Chamber of Commerce office, Cobblestone Grill or Akard True Value. They may be purchased at the event for $12. Children ages 5-12 are $5 and under 5 are free.

Submitted content courtesy of Family Features Prep time: 15 minutes Servings: 10 Ingredients: • 2 ears corn • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil • Salt • 10 large scallops • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese • 10 cherry tomatoes, quartered • 2 tablespoons finely sliced basil • Pepper • 10 Brenton Vinta crackers

Directions: Slice corn off cob. Heat vegetable oil in pan until hot, sauté corn until golden brown, 3-5 minutes. Set aside to cool.

In another pan, heat vegetable oil until hot.

Salt scallops then sear for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Slice in half to create 10 round scallop discs. Mix corn, feta, tomatoes and basil together. Season with salt and pepper. To compile, place spoonful of corn salad on each cracker. Top with 2 pieces of scallop and 1 sprig of basil.

Locals join ‘Steel Magnolias’

By Desiree Williams editorial@youarecurrent.com From friendship to marriage to motherhood, “Steel Magnolias” covers it all. The play runs from now until Aug. 7 at the Center Stage Community Theatre in Lebatheater non, at 604 Powell St. “It centers around the relationship these women have that they always come back together,” said Amanda Bell, who plays M’lynn. “There’s no way this story doesn’t affect people.”

Bell worked in community theatre before, but she took a 20-year hiatus to raise her family in Fishers. She got involved again a few years ago through Nickel Plate Players and started auditioning more. Bell decided to audition for “Steel Magnolias” after stage-managing a show at the Westfield Playhouse where she met Pam Kinglsey, who encouraged Bell to audition alongside her.

“Steel Magnolias” takes place in Truvy’s beauty salon in Louisiana where six women come together on Saturday mornings to get their hair done. The story takes place during four scenes, with each focusing on a new event beginning with a wedding.

milestone in a woman’s life,” said Pam Kingsley, who portrays Clariee.

The play follows Shelby through marriage and motherhood, but also speaks about divorce, aging and dealing with an empty nest.

Bell and Kingsley said it’s a beautifully written play with a powerful story, which is why threatres continue to produce it.

“When people leave, I want them to feel uplifted because family and friendship means everything,” Kingsley said. “I want people … to know we are all in it together.”

Paris’ accidental memorial Commentary by Don Knebel A monumental flame in Paris was intended as a symbol of friendship between two nations. A tragic coincidence transtravel formed that flame into a muchvisited memorial.

In 1989, the International Herald Tribune donated to the citizens of Paris a full-sized replica of the flame that now extends from the torch of the Statue of Liberty in the entrance to the New York Harbor. Named “The Flame of Liberty,” the gold-covered copper sculpture was provided on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the newspaper’s first publication of an English language edition in Paris. The gift returned a favor to France, which had given the Statue of Liberty to the United States on the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The flame also recognized the support of French citizens in the 1986 restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Among other things, the restoration returned the torch flame to the original design of French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, replacing a version

that included large glass-covered openings so the statue could be used as a lighthouse, as it was from 1886 until 1901. After more prominent locations for the 11-foot-tall Flame of Liberty were rejected by Parisian authorities, it was placed on a black and gray marble pedestal above the western opening of the Pont de l’Alma Tunnel that conducts l’Avenue de NewYork under the Place de l’Alma.

On Aug. 31, 1997, Diana, the Princess of Wales, was fatally injured in an automobile accident inside the Pont de l’Alma Tunnel. Mourners immediately began placing flowers and other expressions of their grief and respect at the base of the Flame of Liberty, located just above where she had died. As a result, the gold flame near the Place de l’Alma has become an unofficial memorial to Princess Diana, with many visitors assuming it was erected in her honor.

Position: Youth Advocate Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Youth Advocate responsible for crisis response, prevention and intervention services for youth victims of crime, family violence and sexual assault. Services include individual and group facilitation for child survivors (ages 5-13) of family violence.

Duties: Provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim. Facilitate at least two support groups for children (ages 5-13), which may include primary and secondary victims of family violence. Provide individual services on an as needed basis. Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials, speakers, etc.

Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations. Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and provide coverage to the Child Advocacy Centers.

Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/ intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.
