Democrat numbers increasing — A record number of Hoosier Democratic women, millenials and first-time candidates are running for seats in the General Assembly this year. Nearly 90 percent of the 125 legislative races on the ballot are filled. The Indiana Democratic Party focused on grassroots organizing during 2017 to generate new enthusiasm in the party.

Free Constitution sessions — The Constitution Party will host a series of free sessions on the Constitution. Sessions will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month from now through July at Old National Banking Center, 385 S. Main St., Zionsville. Cultural District awarded grant

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The Indiana Arts Commission has awarded the Zionsville Cultural District Board an Arts Project Grant of $4,095 for ARTS the Lincoln Park Concert Series.

The ZCD Board presents a free concert every Wednesday evening during June and July. This year marks the 27th season for the concert series.

“The series costs $10,000 to produce each season, so the IAC grant will be used to help pay performers, sound technician and promotions,” ZCD Vice President Casey Maish

stated in a press release.

The grant will be used for the 2019 season. The ZCD Board formed in 2013, obtaining nonprofit status the same year.

The board, comprised of 11 members, has a mission of enriching the quality of life in Zionsville through stimulating community interest in the arts by creating artistic and cultural opportunities.

A performance for children begins each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., with the main acts taking the gazebo stage at 7:00 p.m. Zionsville’s Got Talent will conclude the season July 25, featuring local talent of all kinds.

Southbound I-65 between the I-65/I-465 interchange on the northwest side is now closed for bridge preservation projects.

During the closure, I-65 southbound traffic on the northwest side will be detoured via I-465 South or I-865 East. The estimated date to reopen the interstate is August 5, 2018.

The Zionsville Street & Stormwater Dept. is currently doing a micro resurfacing application on the path along Willow Road. This path could be closed until the end of this week, weather permitting. The path will not be accessible while this is being done. The area includes approximately one and a half miles from Elm Lane to 421.

Indianapolis Road north of the intersection of CR 550 is now closed at the new TA Travel Center drive. Cozy Lane is closed at Whitestown Parkway. All traffic must exit to the north onto Indianapolis Road. Westbound Whitestown Parkway, coming from I-65 is detoured south down Indianapolis Road to CR 750 S. Eastbound coming toward the site will also use 475 E to 750 S to Indianapolis Road. It is anticipated this phase of construction will last until August 10.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has closed State Road 47 over I-65 in Boone County.

This closure will last through the end of September. INDOT is replacing the deck on the bridge. The detour will utilize U.S. 52 to S.R. 32 to S.R. 39. The full project includes patching and resurfacing I-65 from Lebanon to near Lafayette.

New construction of a roadway connection C.R. 400 South (Albert S. White) to C.R. 300 South on the east side of Whitestown.

This project also included the construction of the new bridge over Jackson Creek (Boone County Bridge #190). The corridor is being developed as a 2-lane roadway with the ability to easily expand to a 4-lane divided roadway in the future.

Holliday Road between C.R. 975 East and U.S. 421 - The Holliday Road bridge over Eagle Creek remains closed due to severe damage caused by a piece of farm machinery hitting and damaging the historic structure. The roadway will remain closed indefinitely until a bridge replacement and rehabilitation is completed.

Eagle Scouts honor veterans

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Three Zionsville Community High School students from Boy Scout Troop 358 are using their Eagle SOLDIER TRIBUTE Scout projects to help create a Whitestown Veterans Memorial.

Chris Luciani, Luke Revercomb and Lucas Pishon will build an engraved brick path with limestone blocks honoring veterans.

“I think what is so important about the memorial is that us, as Scouts, can give back to our community through our Eagle Scout projects. I couldn’t have thought of a better way to do so than making a Veterans Memorial,” Luciani said.

Revercomb sees an additional benefit.

“I think it is important that people will no longer have to walk through mud just to change the flags. We will be creating a nice place for people to pay their respects,” Revercomb said.

Luciani, who will be a junior in August, is in charge of the brick walkway and engraved bricks. The memorial will include more than 3,000 personalized bricks honoring area veterans. There will be five lime-

stone blocks recognizing each branch of military service.

Revercomb is handling the landscape. He and Pishon will be seniors.

“I will be upgrading lighting and putting in new bushes and mulch. Also, I will be weeding and making sure everything looks nice,” Revercomb said.

Pishon is in charge of the limestone memorial markers.

Money from the brick sales will help fund the project. There are two GoFundMe campaigns to help. The Scouts hope to conclude the project in September.

Plein air painting open to artists

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Painting outside is a challenge for some and a passion for others, but all are invited to participate during the Aug. 11 annual Zionsville Paint Out. SULLIVANMUNCE Artists check in at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St., between 7 and 10 a.m. when their canvas, paper or preferred media will be stamped or identified. Artists have until 2 p.m. to submit their finished work to the museum for judging.

Sponsored by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association, the event has four divisions: professional, amateur adult, youth (ages 5-12) and teen (ages 13-17). Last year’s Paint Out had a record 59 entries.

Artists are encouraged to find a location around Zionsville for inspiration.

Plein air, meaning to work in open air, can be challenging due to environmental considerations, such as shifting sunlight and the possibility of rain. Plein air painters love creating outdoors despite conditions.

Immediately after the winners are announced at 3 p.m., the artwork will be available for purchase. Young hopes the art will be temporarily displayed at the museum if the schedule allows.

At polo matches, charities win

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Hidden behind cornfields along North Michigan Road is a 10-acre field surrounded weekly by tailgaters watching a unique sporting event.

PHILANTHROPY Hickory Hall, Indiana’s only polo club, has held recreational polo matches for the past 14 years. The season began last month and continues to October. The club supports 22 charities throughout Indiana and Boone County.

Sixteen members of Hickory Hall Polo Club play against each other and occasionally compete against other polo organizations from surrounding states.

“We have sprinkled in a few club matches just to help us offset the costs,” said Courtney Shafer, director of catering and events for the Conrad of Indianapolis, who also serves as president of the Hickory Hall Polo Club.

Admission is $20 per car. Proceeds ben-

efit the evening’s charity or organization, such as the upcoming Polo and Pints match Aug. 4 and the Bridles and Bottles match in September.

Shafer said the goal is to ensure local charities can benefit while attendees enjoy matches and socialize. Occasionally, candy is dropped from an airplane at halftime thanks to a local family’s donation.

This year the club has partnered with LA Cafe so that spectators can purchase food on the premises. They can also bring their own food and picnic or tailgate beside the field. “(The announcers) do a great job of giving out tips and tricks and random facts (about polo) throughout the match to educate the attendees of what’s going on on the field,” Shafer said. “It’s really more about watching the match and socializing with family and friends and meeting new ones while tailgating.”

Rotary Club supports shelter

Each year, the PHILANTHROPY group takes on various service projects to help meet community needs. Funding is awarded via grants from the District 6560 Chapter of Rotary International.

In 2017, the group was eligible for a new member grant. Jane Johnson, Jojo Reinbold and Lee Irwin joined that year. It was up to the new members to propose a project worthy of the grant.

“Dr. Lori Buzzetti, the founder of So Big Mountain House, spoke to our group at one of our meetings,” Johnson said. “We became very interested in what they were doing to help pregnant women because one of our core values is to support women and children.”

Together, the three new Rotarians submitted a proposal to build a shed for So Big, located on the property of Whitestown’s New Hope Christian Church, to store So Big’s incoming donations. They received the grant from Rotary International.

“We saw this as a way we could give back to the community and take advantage of the new member grant that the Rotary District was offering to local clubs,” Johnson said.

The project was started on June 23, 2018 and took three weekends to complete with final touches made on July 7.

“Zionsville Rotary Club was great to work with. They met with me to determine our needs and then took care of (the whole project),” Buzzetti said.

It’s all about family Commentary by Ward Degler The license plates were from Michigan, Minnesota, Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee. Some folks came PLAIN TALK from those places, and farther, to attend the family reunion.

A granddaughter and her husband came from Hawaii. Another came from California with her fiancée. They came in twos and threes and in family carloads.

My wife’s family reunion has been an annual affair for more than four decades. Most of us have T-shirts to prove it.

Most years, we’ve gathered at one of Indiana’s state parks. We take over the family campsites with the dormitory cabins, the mess hall and the community fire pit. Everybody brings food, usually more than what’s needed. And everybody brings their hunger for renewing family ties.

There always are new couples that previously tried on the family as boyfriends or girlfriends. Newborns ride the hips of their mothers. Toddlers move from one lap to the next while the pre-teens rediscover the fun of four square. Everyone makes themselves accountable for the safety and well-being of everyone else, and everyone pitches in to help out in the kitchen or to make the cab-

ins comfortable.

There’s no air conditioning at the park, so everybody brings electric fans. The park folks just know the electric bill will soar when the family reunion is in full swing.

Meals are buffet style and nobody is denied seconds. After dinner, several tables in the mess hall deal out the cards for intense games of euchre. Meanwhile, the family musicians set up the bandstand for the annual concert. The guitar players and singers have done this for years, and by now have gotten pretty good. From time to time a professional takes the stage and adds a new dimension to the fun.

After the music dies down, some folks wander off to bed while others gather in canvas chairs in tight circles, quietly sharing moments with one another.

We do it every year, and as folks arrive from near and far, a soft and unexpected warm breeze settles among us. Some say it’s the weather, but the family knows it for what it is – the unbreakable bonds of family love.

Remembrances of the Big Four Commentary by Bob McKnight I am writing to thank you for the recent article about the Big Four Railroad. I have lived most of ZIONSVILLE HISTORY my life very near to the Big Four. My mother and father lived on 6th Street between Sycamore and Hawthorne, just three blocks east from the Zionsville train depot from about 1938 to 1947. They told tales about me as a child not wanting to go to bed until they took me up to the depot and watch the Riley, a train named for Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, come roaring through. That would be in the time frame of 1942 to 1945.

In 1947, my parents bought a 3 1/2-acre farm on Starkey Road. I remember walking home from school on good weather days and stopping at the depot. Several neighborhood kids and I would play along the embankment between the depot and what was known as the Hundred Foot Bridge across Eagle Creek (I don’t know why it is called the 100 foot bridge since it is neither

100 feet tall or long).

When I returned from active duty in the Army about 1968, my wife and I bought a house on 9th Street, which backed up to the Big Four right-of-way. We could stand in the backyard and look down on the trains.

By the time we moved to Sugarbush in 1977, most, if not all, rail traffic had ceased.

In the 1980s, I purchased several acres south of the old depot area that abutted the rail right-of-way to use as a garden. I gardened there for several years before selling the property to the Town of Zionsville for expansion of the sewage treatment plant.

I still reside just a few blocks west of the rail right-of-way in Sugarbush. The railroad in Zionsville was always the Big Four to me.

It may be that the ownership changed over time to Pennsylvania or Penn Central RR, which could explain the dates of operation in your article of 1889 to 1930. However, I assure you there were trains running along there well after 1930 to the 1980s.

Robert Mcknight was born in Zionsville in 1942 and has lived in town for nearly all his life.

Upcoming development will give new life to well-preserved historic home

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com Situated along the west side of U.S. 421, surrounded by farm fields, is a historic two-story brick Italianate dwelling named for its first two owners — the COVER STORY Simpson-Breedlove House. The road is well-traveled, but a single line of mature trees shields the estate from complete view. The large plot beyond the home, bordered by Michigan and Willow roads, is Holliday Farms. The property is well known to Zionsville residents, but few know its rich history. The Simpson-Breedlove House is just one piece of the story.

The Simpson-Breedlove House, 3650 S. U.S. 421, was built in 1865 and was the the main house of a farm that once

occupied nearly 900 acres on the west side of U.S. 421, also called Michigan Road.

The Simpsons and Breedloves were influential citizens in Zionsville at the time. Marcus Simpson practiced law in Zionsville. He and his wife, Caroline, purchased the farm in 1852, then built the two-story brick structure in 1865.

John McKenzie Breedlove and his wife, Mary Ellen, purchased the property from Simpson in 1870. Breedlove died on the property in 1909 and was reported by The Zionsville Times to be one of the most prominent farmers in Zionsville.

His son, David Breedlove, was in the first graduating class at Zionsville High School.

The home was rented for many years to the Essex family.

Heirs to the Breedlove family then sold the home to Frederick Holliday. His son, John Holliday, eventually retained ownership of the farm and continued to rent the house to a succession of tenants until he boarded it up in 1982.

In 1994, Holliday ordered the house to be demolished so that the property could be used as farmland. The bulldozer operator contacted Zionsville’s SullivanMunce Museum in an attempt to save the home. Representatives of the museum were able to convince Holliday to donate the house to Indiana Landmarks, an organization dedicated to restoring buildings with historical value.

Gary Essary purchased the home with his partner, Jerry Hamm, in 1996, and together they restored the home, not only making it livable but adding many new features and two new structures.

Personal insecurities Commentary by Terry Anker

Long lines and minor indignities have become a part of the national ethos in the wake of countless incidences of terrorism here and abroad. We queue for sporting events, airplanes and government buildings. For the most part, the transaction is handled comfortably with as little inconvenience as possible. Still, some express frustration at the bureaucracy and expense required to administer. It seems the only thing more troubling than airport security may be airport insecurity. Our fear leads us to invest tremendously in our protection.

In some primordial fashion, it has kept us alive. We, the successful progenitors of humanity, have learned to approach risk with utmost caution. Still, if possessed by anxiety of the perils of the world around us, do we give up too much? If we fear growth, we are protected from its jeopardies but stunted in our development. Do our personal insecurities secretly holding us back?

Secure or insecure, no one succeeds lifelong without continuing maturity and improvement. Does framing our challenges as a matter of security or insecurity distract us from the important objectives at hand?

At this point, is how we feel about our insecurities as important as meeting our best capacity? Is it like our complaining about how insecure we are in our snug, skinny suit rather than spending the energy counting calories and planning the next day’s meals? Sure, we have come to rely on natural tendencies toward insecurity to keep us safe. But, do we hide behind them?

READER’S VIEW Farm bill is a wins for Hoosiers

Agriculture is an essential part of the fabric that defines Indiana.

Right now, Hoosier farmers and our communities are navigating significant challenges dealing with turmoil on the international marketplace, uncertainty in federal policies like the RFS and low commodity prices that in many cases are below the cost of production.

Importantly, the Senate recently passed a farm bill that I helped write, which would provide Hoosier farmers with some desperately needed stability. I’m proud of the Hoosier input and bipartisan work that went into getting it passed.

Combatting the opioid epidemic in rural communities remains a priority for me, and this bill includes three of my bipartisan provisions that would combat the opioid epidemic by targeting telemedicine and community facility investments for substance abuse treatment and by investing in prevention and education programs.

This bill would eliminate potential disincentives for voluntary conservation practices like cover crops and would support soil health improvement programs.

As Hoosier farmers work to sell their

products around the world, the bill would increase export opportunities for Hoosier farmers through two export promotion programs: the Foreign Market Development Program and the Market Assistance Program.

I also have worked to ensure full planting flexibility for farmers who want to plant fruits and vegetables, which ensures farmers can diversify their farms without worrying about losing access to commodity-support programs in the future.

As we work to fight hunger, this farm bill would strengthen the oversight of the SNAP, while preserving the ability to fight food insecurity.

Now that the Senate has passed this bipartisan farm bill, I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House of Representatives to reconcile differences so that we can quickly get this to President Trump’s desk. Farmers and rural communities across our state deserve the certainty of a bipartisan, five-year farm bill, and I am confident that, working together, we can get it done.

The youngest, who cannot legally drive, and the second son are scheduled to work at noon. The older daughter, who’s had her license for all five days and is highly questionable in even a smidgeon of traffic, has color guard at 10 a.m. but will need lunch at 1:30 p.m. The first born, owner of the aforementioned janky car and part-time salesman for Cutco, has two appointments with potential knife-buying customers and “thinks” he’s out of gas. The father, whose office is the farthest away, prefers to retain transportation. The mother’s schedule is flexible, but if she’s required to negotiate too many roundabouts in high heat she’ll experience acute nausea (the struggle is real!).

The question is, how does this family survive the summer while staying fully employed and out of therapy?

Such is my daily logistical nightmare.

Every morning I consult my calendar and try to determine the best strategy for using our limited vehicular resources. Sometimes, we can rely on grandparents or friends to help, but usually it’s me orchestrating some major mommy magic to get everyone to and from work/practice on time and without sibling infighting.

My younger son assures me that within the month he’ll have enough cash to buy his own ride, but that still leaves the rest of the summer for my role as miracle maker.

So, if you can solve this problem, contact me immediately. And seriously consider law school. You’d crush the LSAT. Peace out.

Zionsville Community High School Campus, 1000 Mulberry Street Strong in Every Way is a Zionsville Community Schools district-wide campaign conceived in mid-2016 to ensure optimum growth resilience and depth of understanding for all ZCS students.

On July 28, ZCS Eagle Recreation and Enrichment Programs will host a SIEW community-building event that is is open to any groups in Zionsville of any size. Teams may be separated into different divisions and smaller groups may be combined to level the playing field. All persons 5 and older are encouraged to participate.

Groups can be formed through sports teams, employee groups, churches, Scout troops, neighborhoods or friends. Individuals who would like to be involved but can’t form a group will be placed on a ZCS Strong team.

During the competition, team members will rotate through a variety of events such as cornhole, kickball or an inner tube relay.

The competition will end with a tug-of-war challenge.

When our new washer and dryer arrived last week, I watched as the two behemoths were installed by two other beHUMOR hemoths. “Don’t I get instructions?” I asked before they left. I was handed a 94-page manual. In four languages.

Our laundry room resembles the cockpit of a 747. Between the two machines there are more than three dozen buttons. They light up when touched and emit a series of short, annoying beeps, as if trying to communicate with me like in the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”

Our old washer had two settings. Going from a normal cycle to a gentle cycle is not something a man does lightly, so I never messed with that. My wife sometimes ventured there, but for the most part, the Wolfsies put a normal spin on things.

These machines look so imposing, we were afraid to go into the room. We walked back and forth in front of the door for several days, avoiding the inevitable. Things were piling up outside and I knew we couldn’t hold out indefinitely. But I didn’t want to be first — nor did Mary Ellen.

I scanned the buttons and eyed the options like silk, quick wash and wool. One setting said hand washables, but I’m not going to stick my mitts in there while that monster is turning. The setting for bulky items scares the cat half to death. One setting says sanitize, which I had thought was a given for every cycle.

The dryer has a setting called super-hot, which I told my wife was especially for her.

If we had been in a fancy restaurant with a glass of wine, that might have gone over well, but we were standing in a room kneedeep in dirty sheets and pillowcases.

My favorite button is the one that adjusts the volume of the other buttons, so if you are down in the basement you can hear the machine upstairs alerting you that your clothes are done. I’m amazed Mary Ellen and I ever managed without this feature.

I have to go now. My socks are calling.

A Nebraska-based company plans to open its first Indiana facility in Whitestown.

Timpte Inc. will build a DEVELOPMENT 12,100 square foot facility near Exit 133 off I-65 on South Indianapolis Road. The project will cost about $2.2 million.

Founded in 1884, Timpte is the largest manufacturer of dry bulk commodity hopper bottom trailers in North America. The Whitestown facility will include factory-direct sales of new and used hopper bottom trailers as well as six full-service bays and overthe-counter parts sales.

“Whitestown has a terrific location logistically, which continues to make us very attractive to companies of all types,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown. “We also have a reputation for being easy to work with and we offer speed-to-market, which is very important to business owners in today’s fast-paced business environment.”

“Timpte is thrilled to announce the expansion of our unique network of factory-

direct trailer sales and aftermarket support facilities into the great state of Indiana,” Dale Jones, president and CEO of Timpte, stated in a press release. “We look forward to working more closely with both existing and new clients in this fast-growing region of the country.”

The project is expected to create 14 jobs between now and 2021.

“These jobs will pay about $26 per hour.

We value good employment opportunities such as these, no matter how many,” Sumner said. “We strive to make sure that new jobs being created here in Whitestown pay enough that employees can afford to live and work in our community.”

Construction could begin in August.

Timpte will join about a dozen other companies in the area off Exit 133. Whitestown was recently recognized as the fastestgrowing community in Indiana for the seventh consecutive year. Sumner said part of the continuing attraction for companies is that the town’s location is ideal for business needs.

“We are willing to work with companies who are willing to make an investment and bring good paying jobs to our community,” Sumner said.

Kathy Flanary has touched countless lives. She grew up seeing her parents volunteer and they instilled that HONOR value in her. The desire to help others has continued throughout her life and career.

The Boone County resident and retired nurse was recently awarded the 2018 Senior Volunteer of the Year by the Central Indiana Council on Aging & In-Home Solutions. Each year, volunteers in the eight surrounding counties of Indianapolis are nominated. One is chosen from each of the eight.

Flanary has been active in the fight against cancer. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006.

“When I was diagnosed I became familiar with the Boone County Cancer Society,” Flanary said. “My husband and I have good insurance, but it’s still a devastating disease with the cost of things. The BCCS did help me financially with covering some co-pays.

CHS graduate Park’s movie to make debut in Indy Shorts Festival

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Justin Park is hoping his success will inspire other high school filmmakers.

The 2018 Carmel High School FILM graduate has directed a narrative short film, “You’ve Been On My Mind,” that will be screened during the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, set for July 26 to 29 at the Newfields at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The event is presented by the Heartland Film Festival.

“It’s sort of in that style of musical from the 1960s,” Park said. “One of the most unique things about the film is not only is the cast and crew from the high school, we also had the music composed and produced by high school students.”

The movie is just under 8 minutes.

Emma Hedrick, another 2018 CHS graduate, composed the title track, “You’ve Been On My Mind.”

“The film itself has been a longer project. It’s been over a year,” Hedrick said.

“Originally, when Justin asked me to compose for the film, I wrote something and that didn’t take very long. I worked on it for an hour or so in study hall time. Then I worked with it in a small jazz band time arrangement. We recorded it and I forgot about it. Justin was filming additional scenes, so I sent him a voice memo with lyrics I wrote to go along with it, and he really liked the lyrics. So, we had to rerecord with the lyrics and did a smaller combo. The original one was mostly horns playing the melody.”

Hedrick is headed to the University of Miami to study vocal jazz performance.

Park, whose film “Kara Deady: The Pole Vaulter” was the Indiana Documentary winner in the High School Film Competition at Heartland in 2017, is going to study film at New York University this fall.

“This is the first time we’re showing it to the general public, and we hope they enjoy watching it and they can appreciate all of our hard work,” Park said. “I hope our film can inspire other high school filmmakers that they can do bigger projects.

The film will be shown at 4:45 p.m. July 27 and 12 p.m. July 28 at DeBoest Lecture Hall.

‘Grateful’ set for film festival Park was director of photography for another film, “Grateful.”

“It wasn’t easy to balance both things together,” Park said.

“Grateful” is a 17-minute documentary, which chronicles the story of Jenni Berebitsky, who is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Berebitsky, 42, was diagnosed nine years ago in March of 2009. At the time, she was told by a doctor she had 18 to 24 months to live.

Amy Pauszek, whose Where’s Amy column appears in Current editions, is one of

the executive producers and co-producer for the 17-minute documentary.

“Her story will warm your heart while teaching us to live an engaging, productive and meaningful life,” Pauszek said.

Pauszek met filmmaker and co-producer Paul Nethercott last year at the Heartland Film Festival, where they both had films.

“We had connected as filmmakers and shared a common interest of making films that will make a difference,” Pauszek said.

Nethercott contacted Pauszek after the festival in late November 2017 and told her he was planning on directing a new documentary short on Berebitsky.

“After we met a few times and having known Jenni through the Heartland Truly Moving Jury Committee, I knew this was the next short I had to produce,” Pauszek said.

Cast clicks in ‘Guys and Dolls’

“I love the show. What I THEATER specifically love about our cast is that it doesn’t matter what part we are, what school we come from, what our personality is, we’ve already connected strongly, which is really helpful for the characters in our show to connect for the story to come to life,” Smiler said.

Civic Theatre’s Young Artists Program will present the classic musical from July 26 to 29 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The performances will be 7 p.m. July 26, 27, 28 and 2 p.m. July 29.

Smiler, who will be a Carmel High School sophomore in August, portrays Martha in the mission band. Melody Barrows, who will be a Westfield High School senior, performs as mission band member Agatha.

“It is challenging to keep from being boring because the mission band has to be very stern and proper most of the time,” Barrows said. “I like playing this character because it allows me to stretch my acting abilities.”

ATI seeks to increase fan base

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com When Actors Theatre of Indiana started in 2005, its productions were held all across the Indianapolis area.

AUDIENCE When the Center for the Performing Arts opened in Carmel in 2011, the Studio Theater became ATI’s permanent home.

However, ATI agreed to present a show in Indianapolis when operators of the District Theatre asked ATI to present the first show at the newly renovated Indianapolis theater on 627 Massachusetts Ave., formerly Theatre on the Square.

“We are big on this regionalization of the arts,” ATI Executive Director Jim Reilly said.

“We’re are trying to take down the barrier at 96th Street. About 10 percent of our subscribers come from Marion County.”

ATI co-founders Judy Fitzgerald, Don Farrell and Cynthia Collins appear along with Logan Moore in “Forbidden Broadway,” which opened July 5. The musical comedy has five more performances before its run concludes July 29.

“In a way, we’re re-introducing ourselves to Indianapolis,” Farrell said. “We want to

continue to build our audience base and let people know there is theater going on above the 96th Street border. There is sometimes negativity with Indianapolis versus Carmel. I love all the people at IRT, Phoenix Theater and Beef & Boards.”

ATI will conclude its 2018-19 season with an updated version of “Forbidden Broadway” April 26 to May 19, 2019.

Billy Kimmel, who has acted in “Forbidden Broadway” through the years, is directing and choreographing the District Theatre version as well as the updated one.

Cuba’s classic cars

Commentary by Don Knebel Many visitors to Cuba take at least one ride in the island’s time-defying vintage automobiles. Appearances can TRAVEL be deceiving.

During the 1950s, wealthy Cubans and American expatriates imported thousands of automobiles made by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors. Reflecting the styles and tastes of the time, most of them featured lots of chrome and brightly colored, often two-tone, paint jobs. When Fidel Castro took control of Cuba in 1959, he barred importation of automobiles from the United States and other non-communist countries as symbols of capitalist excess.

The American embargo then precluded the sale of spare parts to Cuba.

As the miles piled up on the now irreplaceable vehicles, necessity gave birth to hundreds of Cuban inventors. Mechanics kept cars running hundreds of thousands of miles beyond their expected lifespans by substituting engines from wrecked and abandoned Russian cars for the Detroit-made V-8s and fabricating parts in their garages. In the meantime, some of the automobiles, such as

the 1955 to 1957 Chevrolet Bel Airs, had become classics in the United States.

When Americans began visiting Cuba in larger numbers during the Obama administration, they found automobiles on the streets they could see only in car shows back home. When the Cuban government began allowing its citizens to operate independently in the tourist economy, owners of 60-year-old American cars, passed down from their parents and grandparents, found visitors willing to pay $30 an hour just to ride in them, a sum more than the daily wage of the average Cuban. Once inside, passengers often realize that new paint can make old automobiles appear showroom new from the outside, but paint can’t cover ripped upholstery and replace headliners. For most visitors, such concerns are quibbles. More important is that they have ridden and been photographed in icons of mid-20th-century America.

Many of you remember the “Friends” episode entitled, “The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs,” in which Joey Tribiani further confuses an already confusing phrase. Many people get “moot point” confused with “mute point,” but Mr. Tribiani adds another (and hilarious) phrasal faux pas to the list.

The correct phrase, of course, is “moot point,” which is an inconsequential or irrelevant point. “Mute” here certainly makes sense. I think the idea is if you mute something, you can’t hear it anymore. But “moot” came first. So, what exactly is “moot”?

Moot is something that is open for debate. It comes from the Old English word gemot, which was any legislative or judicial court where people would meet to

discuss a matter. A moot point was something that hadn’t yet been decided. It’s where we get the word “meet” from.

How did something that meant “up for debate” become known as something trivial and irrelevant? Welcome to Moot Court.

A moot court is where law students competitively hone their arguing skills. It involves a simulated appellate court case, where students focus on the application of the law to a standard set of evidentiary suppositions, facts and clarifications to which the competitors are introduced. In other words, moot court is made up. The debates held at moot courts are purely academic. Other than a nerdy way for law students to get better at lawyering, the outcomes and arguments make absolutely no real-world difference. They’re moot points.

Moot can, therefore, either mean “debatable” or “irrelevant.” In the U.S., it will almost always mean “irrelevant.”
