One Tool forms interesting artwork

Art created using a single tool – and sometimes an unexpected one – will be on display at the SullivanMunce Cultural DIVERSION Center as part of the One Tool / One Artwork Exhibition.

A felting needle, straw and an X-acto knife are among the tools used to create these pieces of art on the medium of the artist’s choice.

Accompanying the exhibit is a display of roughly 100 garden and homestead tools from the P.H. Sullivan collection.

Fourteen pieces of art by professional and emerging artists will be display through Aug. 29.

A special reception for the artists will be held on Aug. 7 from 6 - 8 p.m. All of the pieces are available for purchase.

The artists are all from central Indiana including Zionsville, Indianapolis, Carmel, Avon and Fishers. Other tools used to create these original pieces of art are a Dremel tool on a piece of

wood, a gesture drawing using an ink stopper, and pencil used to manipulate paint to create a drawing.

The tools from the museum’s collection have been on display since mid-June to coincide with the Gardens of Zionsville Tour, which took place on June 20. This is the first time these items have been for public viewing as a collection. “We haven’t had the tools on display. We’re always combing through our collection trying to come up with exhibit ideas,� said Cynthia Young, SullivanMunce executive director.

The tools vary from saws and planers to a bottle capper and ice tongs. Some of items are hand tools and drill bits, and others are used for farming or the household. According to Young, the items were donated to the museum and museum staff are sometimes not told the purpose of the tools. For unfamiliar items, some of it is a guessing game while other times visitors to the museum have recognized the items and

explained the tools’ purpose.

The idea to showcase the collection started when David Ruffer, past interim executive director of the SullivanMunce, decided to pull some of the tools from the museum’s archives for display. With several of the items being gardening tools, the exhibit coincided nicely with the garden tour and from that point Young devised the idea for a tool theme that would also work for artists in the art gallery. “We try to wrap things together so they make sense,� she said.

One of Young’s pieces will be part of the One Tool / One Artwork Exhibit, and it’s the first time that an exhibit with this theme has been featured at the SullivanMunce. “It opens people’s minds up to other ways you can create art,�

Young said. “It doesn’t have to be traditional tools.�

The next exhibit at the SullivanMunce will be a collection of Susan Easton Burns’ nature paintings opening on Sept. 11.

ZBOP 5K is July 25 to support bands

By Savannah Correll “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ The Zionsville 5K March-A-Thon, an event for the community to support the Zionsville bands, is July 25 this year. Kids FUNDRAISER who have never joined band before, will perform in public and get a taste of what band life is all about.

The idea for this event first came about when the Zionsville Band and Orchestra Patrons board decided to come up with a good fundraiser for the high school’s musical programs.

In addition to this, the March-A-Thon will also function as an enormous “thank you� to both its

sponsors and the Zionsville community.

5K Participants don’t need to be students to contribute to the fundraiser, though.

donations as well, the proceeds of which will all go towards helping Zionsville Community High School fund its music programs.

Rookie participants attend a Marching Band Camp the week before the 5K, which teaches rookies how to march and play their instrument. “It’s a casual event,� said vice president of fundraising officer Rodney Miller. “And is about developing confidence and showmanship, as a group.�

Miller said band members encourage each other during the 5K. “Band members are often found building up the members of the band,� Miller said.

Love blooms at SullivanMunce Commentary by Donna Monday Flowers weren’t all that bloomed at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center on a recent Saturday. Nope. Love bloomed PLAIN TALK there, too. At exactly 3 p.m.

That’s when Amy Vandewielle and Adam Branch walked through the doors of the museum. Amy was there to see a “poetry exhibition on love.”

It’s the first time in my life I’ve felt a part of a wedding proposal conspiracy.

Adam had been there earlier in the day to talk with Cynthia Young, museum director. I was selling tickets for the garden tour, and he told me his plans.

He had decided some time ago that a museum would be a great place to propose. And, since he wanted to include an original poem as part of his proposal, he wanted to find a poetry museum.

He’d Googled “poetry museum.” What popped up was the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. (That’s because the poetry group “Poetry on Brick Street” meets there monthly.)

Adam called the number and talked with Cynthia. Together they worked on his plan.

On Saturday morning, he and Cynthia set about displaying the poem Adam had penned.

He’d had each page printed in a beautiful script and mounted. Together they found four tables on which to display the poem. The final page stood on a lovely table scape designed

by Mary Ellen Stout for the Garden Tour exhibit. The entire display was done in shades of lavender and purple.

“That’ll work,” grinned Adam. “That’s her favorite color.” He left and said they would be back together at 3 p.m.

I should add that the final stanza of his poem reads like this: Love is taking that jump/ Getting on bent knee/Love is asking the one

you adore…

That’s where the poem ended. Obviously, Adam was to drop on bended knee there at the purple table and say, “Will you marry me?”

All went as planned. With everyone at SullivanMunce except Amy knowing what was up, Adam guided her through the reading of each page of what he had told her was the “poetry exhibit on love.”

She never guessed he was the poet. She totally bought the “love poetry exhibit” story until he dropped to one knee.

At that point Amy screamed. Cameras clicked. Even Adam doesn’t know if he said the line, “Will you marry me?”

Hugging and kissing ensued. And more kissing. And still more kissing.

I then said, “Can we take this as a yes?”

“Yes!” said Amy. “Yes! Yes!” And that’s what happened at the museum on Saturday.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of poetry.

Whitestown moves forward with master plan

By Sam Robinson “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Whitestown leaders hope to redefine the image of the town, and they are looking for public input.

COUNTY A joint commission of the Whitestown Plan Commission and the Whitestown Redevelopment Commission reviewed the 120-page town master plan, which outlines strategies for expanding the economy and developing a unique character. “Empirically, Whitestown is in a very good position,� said Chris Hamm, a senior planner with HWC Engineering. “Vision is particularly important for a community growing as fast as Whitestown is.�

HWC Engineering is assisting on the draft of the plan for Whitestown, which saw a 509 percent population growth between 2000 and 2010. That number is 471 people, but rate of growth outclasses comparably populated Indiana towns. “The community members and stake holders are not satisfied with being a suburban community of Indianapolis,� Hamm said. “They want more.�

Hamm said that, although Whitestown has excellent public safety and municipal services, the town’s at risk of becoming “a community of subdivisions.� “We want a community of neighborhoods,�

The plan calls for new high-density residential zones and mixed-use commercial and residential zones. The plan designates nine “community focus areas� on either side of In-

RDC members expressed concern that protections for agricultural land are not explicitly stated, but Hamm said that could be added in a future draft. “We need to preserve the agricultural aspect of our community because people that,� said Robby Halford, the president of the RDC. Whitestown Plan Commission president Clinton Bohm said that community input is key for the success of the project. “I want as much public input on this as possible,� Bohm said. “We need multiple points of views to put this together.�

By Mark Ambrogi “ \PaZ/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Cecilia Alvarez-Heard considers herself a Hoosier now, but she has always been a Mexican as well.

Alvarez-Heard moved COVER STORY from Mexico on July 24, 2002, to be with Andrew Heard, whom she married in November 2003.

Heard, originally from England, is an engineer for XTrac, a company of transmission technology specialists who work with racing teams.

Alvarez-Heard, who lives in Zionsville with her family, has long wanted to do more for Mexicans in Central Indiana.

So she started AMIGOS, acronym for Amigos of Mexicans in Indiana Generating Opportunities. Alvarez-Heard serves as the founder and president of the nonprofit organization, which started in September 2014. “Our mission is to bring education opportunities and be a bridge between Mexicans and Hoosiers in Indiana,� she said. “We want to promote our Mexican culture.�

Alvarez-Heard had noticed a void because other countries from Hispanic heritage had Central Indiana groups, such as Colombians, Venezuelans and Peruvians. “It was amazing because we are the majority of the minority,� Alvarez-Heard said of the Mexicans. “We have around 90,000 Mexicans in Central Indiana.�

Making a difference

In addition to working on programs for the communities, Alvarez-Heard wants to find ways to help victims of domestic violence in the Hispanic community. “We have a passion to help those with domestic violence,� said Alvarez-Heard, adding that she is starting a support group. “I have a passion to help people and the ladies in my organization also have that passion. We want to make a difference. It’s a big commitment. I want to show that we Mexicans can do positive things for Indiana.�

The group has participated in different festivals and the Indianapolis 500 parade. They helped put on Children’s Day at the Children’s

Alvarez-Heard, from Monterrey, Mexico, met her husband when he was there working for a Champ Car race (open-wheel racing).

“I’m very proud to be Mexican, but I’m happy to live here now,� Alvarez-Heard said. “Indiana is a place for opportunities, and I have three kids who are Hoosiers. The winters are longer, but it’s all right. It’s a great, friendly place to live. This is our home.�

Alvarez-Heard’s group, AMIGOS, has 12 female volunteers, including treasurer Pamela Gemmer who lives in the Nora area of Indianapolis. Gemmer lived for 37 years in Mexico and was previously married to a Mexican man. “I’m in my mid-70s, but my AMIGOS friends are keeping me young,� Gemmer said.

Her two sons, Dan and David Valdes, were raised in Mexico City before moving to the United States while in high school. Both were national champion swimmers for Mexico. “I’ve become quite Hispanic in my heart,�

Gemmer said. “I attended a university in Mexico and taught in a university in Mexico, in an American school and in a Mexican bilingual

school. I worked for a Mexican radio station that was affiliated with CBS.�

Gemmer went to Mexico for the first time when she was 18 and moved there when she was 25. “I immigrated to Mexico, which was a very challenging process, and I think it allows me to understand the challenges the Mexican population faces with their immigration into the United States,� Gemmer said. “I can see how the lifestyle is different. They are coming from a very family-oriented society. They are removed from their family, so they have to find trust in community relationship and depend on a community of people rather than family. They have to create a new kind of family. I think I am very sensitive to those kind of issues and the lifestyle and mindset differences.�

By Heather Lusk “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Zionsville’s Girl Scout Troop 1880 had the unique opportunity to meet with Indiana Congresswoman Susan Brooks on the Capitol steps during a summer trip to Washington, D.C. “It was cool to think that she took time out of her busy schedule to see us,� said Paige Zvokel, who, along with Ruth Cronin. was among 14 upcoming seventh graders on the trip. “She took the time to shake our hands and learn our names.�

Brooks told them that all of her aides are from Indiana and that her female employees were scouts when they were younger. She told them that many congresswomen were also Girl

Scouts. “It really made me think, ‘Wow, I could do this when I’m older,’� said Paige. During the chat, Brooks inspired the girls to focus on leadership. “Being in student council or sports teams, being a leader in stuff we do can help us get where she is,� said Ruth.

The trip was a culmination of two years of work. The troop earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award last year by raising money to send six WWII veterans to D.C. with Indy Honor Flight, and this year the girls interviewed local WWII veterans posting their stories to a blog to earn the Silver Award – the highest level award for a Cadette Scout.

BYOD program to form creators, not consumers

By Sam Robinson ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Administrators at Zionsville Community Schools want every child from the fifth grade to graduation to have a computer in the classroom, and they’re letting students and parents decide what’s best to buy.

Zionsville Community Schools thinks that choice makes a world of difference.

The school system launched a program to put computers in the hands of every middle school student during the 20082009 school year. Daniel Layton, the technology officer for the school system, said that the program was a huge success, and it led to the implementation of the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ program in the 2012-2013 school year. “We’re trying to get technology into our students’ hands,� Layton said.

Students from fifth grade onward have to buy or rent a computer. There are only a few requirements. The computer has to run Windows or Mac OSX, have at

least one USB port, and have a screen at least 7-inches wide. Zionsville Community Schools advises students not to use Linux operating systems, and it says cell phones don’t count as devices.

Those are the only requirements because the school system wants students to have as much choice as possible. “And choice is always a good thing,�

Layton said. “And if students aren’t ready to go out and buy one, they can rent.�

Layton said that choice alone can get a student passionate about technology.

Students have the flexibility in choosing what computer they want, and incorporating technology in the classroom can create technology literate graduates. “It opens everything,� Layton said. “It opens the world up through these devices. We’re looking to create a generation of creators rather than consumers.�

Students that would rather rent a computer may do so for $146.59. Zionsville Community Schools offers resources on their website to help parents and students find the best deals.

ZCHS offers resources to new freshmen

By Sam Robinson “ ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Graduates of middle schools in Zionsville face another four years of education at the high school, and some might be concerned about how they’ll transition to a new school.

Zionsville Community High School assistant principal Greg Hall said that new students have nothing to fear because he works with students to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Hall has been an assistant principal at ZCHS for nine years, and he’s in charge of helping students assimilate to high school life. He oversees the freshman center, which provides support for students finding it difficult to adapt to high school. “What leads to the most anxiety for freshman is the building transition,� Hall said. “We try to mitigate that and make them feel comfortable.�

There’s a freshman kick-off event held every August that helps dispel some of that anxiety. New students have the opportunity to explore the school and talk with other students. “Students start to accept more responsibility for their learning experience,� Hall said. “That looks like seeking out help when it’s necessary, seeking that independence.�

But the high school doesn’t throw them into the deep end right away. “We work with them to understand the transcript, that’ll ultimately be viewed by a college admission officer or a future employer,� he said.

Hall also said that students adapting socially is a part of the process of growing up and finding oneself. “We know when students develop an identity for themselves, they perform better academically,� Hall said.

Preschools ready for students

Two hundred and sixty five youngsters ages 3 to 5 will join the ranks of older elementary school students this fall, as the Zionsville School Corporation’s expanded Universal Preschool opens in six ZCS schools: all five elementary schools and Zionsville West Middle School. Each school will offer at least one class of preschool (ages 3 and 4) and one of prekindergarten (ages 4 and 5). “We knew what it meant for the families,� said Shelley Lantz, Universal Preschool manager. “The option of being able to have their child attend the preschool at which they would then be attending K through four, we knew the families would really be thrilled.�

The program is almost at capacity, with a few spots open at Zionsville West but waiting lists everywhere else. “That’s the only bad thing - the demand,� Lantz said. Parents who are new to Zionsville or have never before looked at preschools have been disappointed that the classes filled so quickly, according to Lantz. “I knew within three weeks (of registration opening),� said Lantz. “That’s when I had my waiting list started.�

Zionsville parent Rhonda Adams, who will send two elementary-aged students to Pleasant View in the fall, was ready with her computer when registration was first available. “I knew that registration date,� she said. “When it opened at noon I was basically hitting send.�

Adams had sent two of her children to preschool when the only location was Boone Meadow and is excited for her youngest child to be in the same school with her siblings.

Donald Trump, that free-talking candidate for the Republican nomination for president, leads his GOP rivals in polling as of last week. Amazing. This is the same version of The Donald that recently made disgustingly disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants, that has been jettisoned by a number of TV network and commercial enterprises and that claims a perfect candidacy because heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a â&#x20AC;&#x153;really rich guy.â&#x20AC;? Apparently, voters want plain speaking. Give him credit on some level, though, because in some ways he has his spine intact. Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; Lest ye believe we only poke at politicians here, consider this woman a candidate for the annual Darwin Awards, which take time out to â&#x20AC;&#x153;honorâ&#x20AC;? the stupid. The woman, a Tennessee resident, has been busted for using counterfeit money. Why did she do it? Because she read an online account that said President Barack Obama declared it legal to do so. He did no such thing. Even better, she faked her $5 and $100 bills by printing them in black and white, and then gluing the fronts and backs together. She was arrested and charged with criminal simulation (simulating a criminal?) and counterfeiting. â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Merica! Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; Â&#x201C; We took a media tour of the Indianapolis Mormon Temple in Carmel last week, and, not knowing what to expect, we were blown away by its stunningly tasteful beauty.

And we continue to be impressed by the unbridled grace with which we have been greeted and treated, in person and by phone, by those affiliated with the temple.

Dogs are people, too

While it would be fair to say that we like pets in general, we have a preference for the canine variety of domesticated beasts. Millions of Americans invite dogs, cats, gerbils, fish and countless others of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creatures into their homes (often sleeping in the same room if not the same bed). At a recent conference on merger and acquisition activity held here in Central Indiana, several of the panelists representing investor groups and investment banks pointed to the growing spending in the pet area. More than increasing quality in food provided for our cohabitants, it seems that we are attentive to the overall quality of life they experience. Clothing, furniture, spas, resorts and countless other products and ideas prove that in spite of what has been a difficult economy, we LOVE our furry friends.

Most of us donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t completely buy into the aphorism that â&#x20AC;&#x153;dogs are people, too.â&#x20AC;? But, it is understandable that we personify them.

Empathy, attention, joy and concern are all on the docket for the routine interaction with a pet. And, they display an amazing array of what can only be called personalities. Some are engaging, extroverted beings that seem happiest when interacting with their human counterparts. Others are shy, introverted animals that appear to prefer a quiet spot in the sun to the chaos of daily family life.

Whether demeanor is determined by breeding, socialization or a combination of both has long been debated, and not satisfactorily answered, but can they help us to understand our own interactions with other animals of the human variety? Do we bark at anyone that enters the space we believe to be our own yard?

I received several â&#x20AC;&#x153;hate emailsâ&#x20AC;? over a recent column, the one where I was trying to figure out if my 11-year-old had become a brat because of her age or HUMOR because of competitive dance.

So because I have at least another year of fishnet hose, glitter lipstick and obnoxious awards ceremonies, I thought it wise to clarify my position before a fellow dance mom shanks me backstage with a mascara wand. [Is the verb shank or shiv? I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t started season three of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Orange is the New Blackâ&#x20AC;? and my prison lingo is rusty!]

For starters, not all â&#x20AC;&#x153;dance peopleâ&#x20AC;? perpetuate or even tolerate the crazy. My daughter has made wonderful friends and developed the strength, grace and self-confidence of a much older girl in her two short years of training. I would (and have) left her in the care of almost every dance mom on her team and trust their babysitting skills more than my husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Her instructors not only expect, but demand respect, accountability and hard work, and understand that these are the qualities that make a good dancer, not the number of trophies she takes home.

If I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t love her studio and the quality environment they maintain, she would not be dancing. Period.

However, anyone who claims that the world of dance doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have its fair share of drama is either not involved or lying. I have seen mothers yell at their preschoolers while they fought to apply fake eyelashes. I have heard girls belittle their own teammates for falling out of turn. And I have had parents make snide remarks to me for belonging to what they considered a lower-class studio.

Costumes cost up to $200 each and solos run $100 per competition. $10,000 a year is definitely not unheard of.

Like in all competitive sports, dance attracts a fair number of nut jobs. And most pre-teens are, at one time or another, insufferable brats. My point is, when you marry the two together, you potentially have a recipe for crazy. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m saying, so please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shank/shiv me next season! Peace out.

I told HUMOR him I was often awake 10 or 12 hours in a row. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, Dick, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fall asleep at night?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;No, Doc, I sleep great at night. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all day that I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sleep.â&#x20AC;?

In this research there is so much to think about that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s keeping me up all day. The study claims â&#x20AC;&#x153;the kind of nap you take depends on the time you have at your disposal.â&#x20AC;?

Recently, I fell asleep next to the sink while running the disposal. My wife decided it was a toss-up which of us she would rather sleep next to.

There are three types of naps: Â&#x201C; The Habitual Nap: Take whether you are tired or not. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2 p.m., Time to lie down.

If I knew in preschool that I was training to be a senior citizen, I might have been more cooperative. Â&#x201C; The Planned Nap: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not tired, but you are going to a play later and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to snore and drool through the entire second act.

Â&#x201C; The Emergency Nap: You are driving to Chicago. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had three tall cups of coffee and jammed a ball-point pen into your thigh, but you are still nodding off.

Scientists say emergency naps are taken out of â&#x20AC;&#x153;bleary-eyed, foggy-headed necessity.â&#x20AC;? Personally, I believe in a little more pre-planning. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s why I am already preparing to take a nap â&#x20AC;Ś tomorrow. Â The quickest nap is the six-minute Ultra Short, which supposedly improves your shortterm memory. Why, then, when you awaken, is the first thing you say: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where am I?â&#x20AC;? My brother is a big fan of this nap, but his clients keep waking him, screaming from the back seat of his taxi.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2 p.m. and Mary Ellen is upstairs. She denies that she ever naps. But I must say, right now she is doing a pretty good impersonation of how I sound when I snore.

Remembering picking berries Commentary by Ward Degler We ate the last of the raspberries on some ice cream the other night.

The man who built the PLAIN TALK house around 1960 planted them along with a Concord grape arbor. They were probably in neat and tidy rows back then, but I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discover either of them for several years after we moved in. By then both had grown straggly and wild.

The raspberries are scattered in among fencerow shrubs that I neither planted nor can identify.

We went berry picking when I was a kid, too. Blackberries mostly, in wild patches deep in the woods of southern Missouri. Dad was a forester, and after a week of combing the forgotten woodlands he would come home with the pronouncement that â&#x20AC;&#x153;come Sunday, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to pick blackberries.â&#x20AC;?

This meant he had found a lush berry patch deeply embedded in the wilderness.

After a few miles on the highway, Dad swung the car onto a gravel road and then into the ruts of an overgrown farm lane. Then he literally plunged into the woods, following an ancient logging road that only he could see.

There were always fallen logs and boulders to crawl over, a creek to cross and at least one mosquito-infested bog to wade through to get to the berries. By the time we got to the berry patch we were soaked with sweat, bruised, bitten and miserable.

The berries were huge, juicy and plentiful. We filled our buckets to overflowing, and then painfully crawled back through the wilderness to the car. By the time we got home we were exhausted, and eaten by chiggers and mosquitoes.

After we kids had gone to bed, Mom and Dad dumped the berries into a huge kettle, cooked them into a thick slurry, poured them into pint jars, covered them with molten wax and tucked them away in the cellar.

By the time winter rolled around, and I sat at the breakfast table, spreading a piece of hot toast with homemade blackberry jam, I had almost forgotten the misery of picking blackberries.

Almost.

Teens take over Civic Theatre in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oklahomaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

Every summer the participants of Civic Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Young Adult Program have the chance to learn about every aspect of the theatre and then bring those PERFORMANCE lessons to life by putting on a musical production. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The entire show is run by truly talented high school students under the supervision of professionals,â&#x20AC;? according to Kelly Smith, Young Adult Program coordinator.

They can learn about costumes, set design, and even the orchestra, as high schoolers play in the pit next to professionals from the Indiana Wind Symphony.

YAP, open to students aged 14 - 18, consists of a seven-week summer program and year-round workshops to learn about various aspects of Theatre. The summer program allows the students the additional opportunity to put on a performance such as this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oklahoma.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels more like a professional show, like the feeling of a Beef and Boards or an actual Civic (Theatre) show,â&#x20AC;? said upcoming high school senior Nick Gehring, a first time participant in YAP who plays Curly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It feels really exhilarating to be a part of this process.â&#x20AC;?

Gehring has been a part of many performances through school and summer stock but the West Clay resident has been impressed with the opportunities that YAP allows the young actors and crew. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We get the exact same experience that some of these professionals would get,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so cleanly run, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve thought out every aspect of it.â&#x20AC;?

Summer workshop topics vary from combat training to playing different ages on the stage to life in New York City and are open to any eligible students, with roughly sixty percent each summer also participating in the musical.

Smith started YAP when Civic was an art museum. Then around 1999 she left the program to focus on her family. Four years ago she was asked to resurrect YAP at its new location in Carmel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Indianapolis in an incredible Theatre community,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s able to bring local professionals from a variety of fields to lead the workshops.

YAP draws students from all over Central Indiana, including Brownsburg, Danville, Pendleton and Westfield, with two of the leads for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oklahomaâ&#x20AC;? being from Zionsville and Carmel.

Megan Tiller, an upcoming ZCHS senior who portrays Ado Annie, has been involved with Civic Theatre for the past four

years. She has discovered the value that Theatre can provide beyond just being on stage. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It helps you learn things about yourself that you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know, and gives you the confidence to give interviews and express your talent in different ways,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Civic has helped me grow and become a young woman more than any other program.â&#x20AC;?

The opportunity to transport an audience is one of her favorite things about being a part of the Theatre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You get to take them away for that time and let them be drifted off into a different world that you have created,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Mary Culp, an upcoming ZCHS junior has enjoyed the entire learning experience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They set the bar so high that you rise to it,â&#x20AC;? she said. This is her first year with YAP, and she has found it challenging in a positive way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gets tough to be there for so long, but you like being there for hours on end,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something to be said about performing with a group of people who youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve become so close with and how you admire so much,â&#x20AC;? said Culp.

Smith is confident in the future of YAP. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The interest is there, the kids have fun, so I think it will last.â&#x20AC;?

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s October 1945, and the gospel-singing Sanders family is back in â&#x20AC;&#x153;Smoke on the Mountain: HomePERFORMANCE comingâ&#x20AC;? at Beef & Boards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Smoke on the Mountain: Homecomingâ&#x20AC;? is set for 46 performances from July 9 through August 16, telling the comedic story of a post-war North Carolinian familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experiences at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe (played by John Vessels) is called away to preach in Texas, dragging along his eight month pregnant wife June, leaving his church to his son Dennis. Twenty-five bluegrass gospel songs accompany the Sandersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; departure in a series of â&#x20AC;&#x153;anything that can go wrong, willâ&#x20AC;? escapades.

Homecoming may come across as a little different than most plays or musicals, being the third installment in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Smoke on the Mountainâ&#x20AC;? musical series, written by Connie Ray and music by Mike Craver.

The 2015 Boone County Fair is right around the corner â&#x20AC;&#x201C; set to begin July 24.

Opening day begins at 7 a.m., COUNTY and features two new evening events at the State Bank of Lizton Free Stage. Fair patrons can enjoy the youth Champion Cheer Squad Performance at 6 p.m., and the Animalia Hands On Exotic Animals and Wildlife show beginning at 7 p.m.

According to Pandora Woodward, 4-H youth development extension educator for the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, weekend days are typically the most heavily-trafficked days during the fair.

Although Family Day, scheduled for July 28 this year, is also a very popular day for fair attendance. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That day is filled with youth activities, free activities for the community,â&#x20AC;? Woodward said.

Highlights for the day include the 4-H Swine Show, the program, â&#x20AC;&#x153;From the Farm Gate to the Dinner Plate,â&#x20AC;? and annual favorite watermelon eating and watermelon seed

spitting contests. Additionally, inflatable games and the family fun tent begin at 1 p.m. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our 4-H member enrollment has increased this year by about 200 youth, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s awesome. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve at over 1,200 youth in the 4-H program,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Although fair attendance records are not kept, Woodward said that they gauge attendance health by reports from food vendors.

The most popular 4-H project is shooting sports, with enrollment of over 550 youth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very popular program here, and we have boys and girls in it alike. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really cool. The largest enrollment for any 4-H program in the state of Indiana is the Boone County shooting sports,â&#x20AC;? Woodward said.

Five shooting disciplines are offered in Boone County: archery, muzzle loading, pistol, rifle and shotgun. Participants of the gun safety project spend every Saturday from April through June in practices at the Boone County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Dept. shooting range.

Total Time: 25 mins Original recipe makes 4-6 servings Ingredients: 2 cups small broccoli florets, 2 cups thinly sliced zucchini, 8 thin slices red onion, 1/4 cup vinaigrette dressing, 2 medium heirloom tomatoes, thinly sliced, 2 (8- to 9-inch) frozen cornmeal or other pizza crusts, thawed, pepper to taste, 1/2 pound crumbled feta cheese, 2 tablespoons mixed chopped herbs (such as basil, rosemary and oregano) Directions: Heat a grill. In a grilling basket, grill the broccoli, zucchini, and onions, brushing with vinaigrette dressing and turning often, until just tender. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 425°F. Arrange tomatoes on the pizza crusts, then arrange grilled veggies on top of the tomatoes. Season with pepper. Mix the feta cheese with the fresh herbs and sprinkle mixture over the vegetables.

Bake until cheese is browned and vegetables are crisp, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer to a cutting board, cut into slices and serve.

One of the greatest joys of leading “voluntourism” retreats, trips mixed with travel and service, is the mixture of ages TRAVEL within a group. Recently I had 20 people join me to Costa Rica including high school students, an 11-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. Our oldest was 70 years young. Bernadette was a delight as she zip lined through the rainforest for her first time. Grey, our 5-year-old from Zionsville, kept everyone joyfully engaged throughout the week as we worked at our International Center for Girls.

The group visited the school on four different occasions. Reading stations were set up, tie-dye activity was implemented, the classroom was completed cleaned and reorganized, backpacks were given as well as special stuffed animals and beanie babies, fluoride treatments were applied to each child’s teeth, games and singing with the children were a big hit, and a wonderful workshop on Empowerment was given by a sex education teacher from Richmond, Ind..

Each girl received new pink shoes to go with their “Girls for Success” t-shirts. We were able to deliver a much requested computer to Yainsey, our miracle child who has had eight surgeries on her leg. Yainsey will also be receiving a $150 pink bicycle so that she is able to get around easier.

Bends of material were brought down so our sewing program can go to the next level

of making revenue producing items.

A field trip with the girls to the beach followed by pizza was a huge hit. Adventure activities (zip lining and river rafting) and trips to the beach were also part of the week’s schedule for our group participants.

The highlight, as always, were the dinners with the families the last night in the rainforest. Six or seven families host three-to-five people for a couple of hours and serve traditional Costa Rican fare.

Grey’s mother, Courtney Gorman, says, “I am extremely passionate about voluntourism, having been a trip organizer and leader for many years. To take my five-year-old on his first one was a dream come true....His light shone so bright, as I knew it would, and he immersed himself fully in everything we did.

For me to sit back and watch him connect so open-heartedly with everyone, especially the Costa Rican children, will forever be a treasured memory. I know journeys like this will keep him seeking out adventure, hungry for learning, and passionate about service work throughout his life.” What more can you want for you child?

Fireplace Shop gets new owner

By Sam Robinson Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Maliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fireplace Shop at 115 Medical Dr., Carmel, just north of 116th Street, is under new ownership after 49 BUSINESS years of business with the Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malia family.

Helen Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malia and her son Kevin Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malia, who worked at the shop for 33 years, are preparing for retirement while reflecting on a life of business in the Carmel area.

Bill and Helen Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malia opened the shop in the fall of 1966. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seen it all. The business moved three times, once after a devastating fire at its original location in Indianapolis. The business moved to Carmel in 1982, and as Carmel grew and expanded, the family business did the same.

Helen Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Malia, 83, said that she and her husband originally decided to open a fireplace shop because her husband had bad knees, so he couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t lay tile anymore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided he would have to do something other than tiles,â&#x20AC;? Helen said. That something ended up being fireplaces, which had little overlap with Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knowledge of tiling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We knew nothing about it,â&#x20AC;? Helen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Little by little we gained knowledge of what to do.â&#x20AC;?

That meant she and her husband went to trade shows to learn more about business.

sold gifts and baubles. As Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Maliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fireplace Shop grew into its niche, that shop closed and the entire family started working at Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Maliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We learned by experience,â&#x20AC;? said Kevin, the former manager of the shop and one of Helenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three sons. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What we strived on is quality service.â&#x20AC;?

Kevin started working at Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Maliaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fireplace Shop in 1981.

Kevin said that quality service was the most important part of the business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The reason we had to provide customer service was to be better than the big box stores,â&#x20AC;? Kevin said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think we succeeded with that.â&#x20AC;?

Hidden Treasures Antiques has closed its Zionsville retail store to concentrate more on its eBay HIDDEN TREASURES business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our eBay business is strong and we feel this will be a consolidation of our skills and talents,â&#x20AC;? manager Dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Lisa Struck said. Hidden Treasures closed its 176 Main St. retail space this month. Struck said they have spent the last few weeks preparing for the move slated to be made on July 21. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are moving into a flex warehouse space,â&#x20AC;? Struck said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will still be welcoming customers. We still want people to understand that we are always buying collectibles and variety of antiques. Lessons from a Copenhagen Statue Commentary by Don Knebel â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Little Mermaidâ&#x20AC;? is Copenhagenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most famous statue. A short walk away, an older and larger statue carries an imTRAVEL portant message.

In 1748, King Frederick V of Denmark/Norway ordered redevelopment of a waterfront area near the entrance to Copenhagenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harbor to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Christian Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s founding of the Oldenburg dynasty. Four mansions, symmetrically arranged around an octagonal court, were to be owned and occupied by important noblemen. One of the mansions was for Count Adam Gottlob Moltke, a close confidant of the king, who supervised the project named â&#x20AC;&#x153;Frederiksstaden.â&#x20AC;? The mansions, were completed by 1760.

In 1752, Count Moltke persuaded the Danish Asiatic Company, of which he was director, to commission a statue of Frederick V on horseback to occupy the center of Frederiksstadenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s courtyard. Moltke engaged French artist Jacques Saly, who brought his family to Copenhagen and began work in 1754.

In 1758, after studying the kingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horses, Saly presented the king a small model of the proposed statue, which the king approved. Saly

then created a life-size bust of the persnickety king to assure that his likeness was also acceptable. By 1764, Saly had completed the plaster cast for the full-size statue, which he rendered in bronze in 1768. After three years of additional work, workers placed the 22-ton statue on its pedestal in 1771. Unfortunately, King Frederick never saw the statue, depicting him as a Roman emperor. Notorious for his bacchanalian orgies, he had died at age 42, five years before its completion. His statue, 17 years aborning, had cost more than the four

In 1794, the royal family acquired the Frederiksstaden mansions for its winter residence. Frederick V is still on his horse, reminding his descendants of the importance of budgets and deadlines.
