BZA denies Airbnb rental request

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com One Village couple hoping to lay the groundwork for short-term rentals in Zionsville instead found themselves out zoning of business after the Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals denied their request to be allowed to rent a room over their detached garage through the website Airbnb.com.

Commissioners said little before their unanimous vote after listening to several residents on both sides of the issue voice their opinions.

Board member Gregory Morical pointed out that bed and breakfasts are specifically prohibited in urban areas in the town’s zoning code, which states that they are among uses that “by the nature of the investment or operation, have a pronounced tendency, once started, to rapidly increase beyond the limits … for home occupations and impair the use, value and quiet enjoyment of adjacent residential properties.”

“My personal opinion is that while Airbnbs may be a useful thing, and I have personally stayed at Airbnbs in the past, the petitioner has failed to meet its burden of proof,” Morical said.

Mike Andreoli, an attorney representing petitioners Steven and Tamara Totty, said before the vote that his clients bought the property with plans to rent out the space through Airbnb.com, a site that connects travelers with short-term rentals. They saw several other active rentals on the site in Zionsville and were

under the impression that they would not be prohibited from listing their home.

“They investigated and found out there were other Airbnbs (operating in Zionsville) as they do today,” Andreoli said. “When they bought the property they had no reason to believe they couldn’t use the property as an Airbnb, because others were existing and in actual usage.”

But board members and remonstrators didn’t buy that argument.

“This is a self-imposed hardship,” said Carole Boleman, who lives near the Tottys.

Some remonstrators said they worried for their safety, with strangers frequently coming into the neighborhood, while others expressed concerns that property values would drop.

Don and Tammy Hahn, who live near the Tottys, spoke in support of the Airbnb and said that they didn’t even realize the home was being rented out until they got online looking for accommodations in the area. Louise Bergmann, a realtor who also lives in the Village, said she did a search of property values in the immediate area in 2015 – when the Tottys hosted 94 guests in 212 nights – and didn’t find any negative impact.

“The values in the Village have not gone to hell in a handbasket,” Bergmann said.

As of July 12 more than a dozen Zionsville area homes were listed on Airbnb.com. Town officials only investigate after receiving a complaint, as they did against the Totty’s in 2015.

Town code generally allows homeowners to rent their properties as long as they are not also living on the site.

Papa recognized – Jeff Papa of Zionsville was named Distinguished Fellow by the Indianapolis Bar Foundation. He also received the Honor Alumni Award from Rose-Hulman, the highest honor given by the Rose-Hulman Alumni Association.

Papa was selected based on his outstanding professional accomplishments, and his meritorious service in furthering the interest of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Papa is a Zionsville Town council member and served as interim mayor of Zionsville.

Tennis championship results – The United States Tennis Association Midwest Section Closed Junior Championships recently ended with several local players reaching the finals. Zionsville resident Johnathan Small was a Boys 18 doubles finalist.

Town approves pedestrian, bikeway plan

By Sadie Hunter • sadie@youarecurrent.com At its July 5 meeting, the Zionsville Town Council unanimously approved an amendment to the town’s comprehenrecreation sive plan that will include a pedestrian and bikeways plan, known as the Strategic Trails and Implementation Plan.

An executive summary of the plan states that the proposed projects within it will only enhance an already bike- and walking-friendly community.

“The plan includes infrastructure and program recommendations that are supported by an action-oriented implementation strategy to sustain momentum and progress for years,” the exMcClellan ecutive summary stated.

The plan, which came to the council with a unanimous favorable recommendation from the Zionsville Plan Commission and Zionsville Parks Board, was funded through a grant from Indiana State Dept. of Health and funds provided by the Town and Zionsville and the Zionsville Dept. of Parks and Recreation.

Unique playhouse brings family together

A crooked, whimsical playhouse is taking shape at the house on the corner of Royal Run Boulevard and Dorchester Drive in Zionsville.

Michael Klingsmith, who returned from deployment with the U.S. Army approximately one month ago, is building the structure lifestyle for his daughters, Lucy, 7, and Sophieah, 5.

Neighbor Evan Hardy, upon viewing the playhouse, remarked that it was truly “one of a kind” and reminds him of something out of a Dr. Seuss story.

And he’s not far off in his description. Klingsmith envisions a playhouse that is constructed of curious angles. All of the lines of the walls and ceiling are slanted, with the only straight boards being those in the floor.

Klingsmith is working without a blueprint, and when he went to the store to get the cedar planks for the playhouse, he said “the (employees) were entirely lost about what I wanted to create.”

His inspiration for building the house? He saw one like it online and knew he had to build something similarly imaginative and playful. The family views the project as something special to work on together.

“The girls love it,” said Dawn Klingsmith, Michael’s wife. “It’s a good bonding experience.”

Lucy has been active in helping her dad build the playhouse.

“It’s awesome because Daddy built it,” she said.

Klingsmith expects the playhouse to take no more than one week to build. He is still unsure what color the house will be, but thinks his daughters might decide to go with a shade of purple.

When the playhouse is done, Klingsmith wants to hang a light on the outside porch of the playhouse and a flower pot that’s just slightly crooked.

“In the past, (the event) was an outreach program with funds spread out among various areas of need. We’re now serving more people than ever in Haiti,” event coordinator Kim Reinhart said. “That’s what is cool about this event. We are going to be able to directly impact the community.”

The funds raised will help provide the community with clean drinking water, meals for children and families and a kitchen at the local school, St. Anthony of Padua.

“We identified that $75 will actually pay for a meal for one child for a year,” Reinhart said. “That to me was like, ‘OK, I’ll forego my weekend going to Bub’s with my family, and we’ll save that money and donate to feed that one child.’”

The name of the race is more than just a

play on the church’s name.

“We also liked the jig of the song itself by Paul Simon,” Reinhart said. “It came up because, as an outreach, we’re all about being friendly and loving to a community.”

The entire family is encouraged to attend the race and the festivities afterward.

“We will have music and activities after the race for people of all ages,” Reinhart said.

“We’ll have face painting and games for kids if they don’t want to go the full three miles.”

Runners will be timed, but the event is designed to be welcoming to all levels. The run is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus in Zionsville.

It wasn’t all that bad Commentary by Ward Degler If memory serves, it was 1968. I had just moved from the arctic plains of South Dakota to the snow-blown streets plain talk of Minneapolis. I was returning to work from lunch one day, and over the radio came the dulcet tones of a university college student by the name of Garrison Keillor.

I recall he was extolling the virtues of a product called Powdermilk Biscuits. He said they came in a familiar blue box and were not only good for you, but they were expeditious.

The name resonated, and although I had never heard of Powdermilk Biscuits, I found myself scanning the grocery shelves for the familiar blue box.

I tuned in every day after that as Keillor presented an hour-long program he called “A Prairie Home Companion.” The cornerstone of the show was a place called Lake Wobegone, a small town out by the lake where life drifted along at a comfortable pace, and everybody knew everybody else.

By the time I realized Powdermilk Biscuits were fictional, Keillor had introduced a number of other sponsors from Lake Wobegone. Key among them was the Chatterbox Café where a man could have a cup of coffee with friends and share the news of the day. You didn’t have to have inspiration at the Chatterbox, Keillor said. Sooner or later, inspiration would just naturally come to you.

Good Grocery, which claimed that if you couldn’t find it at Ralph’s, you probably didn’t need it anyway. Jack’s Auto Repair and Dry Goods specialized in hats for big and tall men.

And Bertha’s Kitty Boutique pleaded with listeners to stop saying they were going to get their cat fixed because it implied there was something wrong with it to begin with. The Duct Tape Council and the Ketchup Advisory Board rounded out many of the broadcasts.

According to Keillor, all the folks at Lake Wobegone were extremely humble and selfdeprecating. For example, no one would ever dream of flying first class, he said. That would be putting on airs.

No one ever bragged about anything they had done either, he said. The best anything could ever be was, “not all that bad.” As an example, when the Rev. Lundquist won a trip to Hawaii one winter, the folks back home wanted to know how it was. His reply: “It wasn’t that bad.”

Fast forward 40-plus years and I guess I’ve tuned in to “A Prairie Home Companion” just about every week. At the news of his retirement, someone asked me what I thought of that long-running broadcast I told them I thought it wasn’t all that bad.

World War II veteran McGriff shares Normandy experiences

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carver McGriff was a 19-year-old U.S. Army private when he landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on June 9, 1944. Now, 70plus years later, the Zionsville resident is cover story still drawn to the French region.

McGriff, who turns 92 Sept. 5, wrote the book “Making Sense of Normandy: A Young Man’s Journey of Faith and War” in 2007.

At the invitation of the son of the founder of the Utah Beach Museum, McGriff gave a speech for World War II veterans at the D-Day Ceremony on Utah Beach June 6. He also leads annual Normandy tours, mostly with members from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and their friends. The next week-long tour is set for August. McGriff, a minister for 33 years, retired in 1993 after being St. Luke’s pastor for 26 years.

When he first returned to Normandy, he called it a powerful moment.

“I could see, in my mind’s eye, a bunch of teenagers walking in from the water,” he said.

“Now, when I return, I reflect that those teenagers are either deceased or incredibly old, and I privately celebrate what we did there.

So much was gained, but so too, so much was lost. We also couple the visit to Utah, in our mind’s eyes, with the one at Omaha (Beach), where more than 9,000 kids are buried.”

McGriff always reflects on those soldiers who didn’t make it home.

“I think how many wonderful marriages never took

place, how many beautiful children who might have one day cured cancer, or worked for justice, or designed great buildings, or been celebrated educators, were never born because those future husbands and fathers, instead, paid with their lives so I could stand there,” McGriff said.

The Indianapolis native said it was an honor to be part of what happened in Normandy. After being wounded, McGriff was captured by the Germans on July 7, 1944. He was given medical treatment and was rescued by an American unit nearly one month later on Aug. 4. He recuperated in a hospital in England and did not return to battle.

“I guess we lead these tours so some of the next generation will know what their granddads did for them,” he said.

“And being a father, I also reflect on the sum total of grief suffered by the mothers and dads of all the kids who died there so today’s generation can demonstrate and speak out for their beliefs without fear of punishment.”

When he goes back with a tour, McGriff goes to the cemetery where U.S. soldiers are buried. He asks tour members to choose a grave and say a prayer for the soldier who lost his life.

“This boy, probably no one remembers him now,” McGriff said. “I ask them to say a prayer for his eternal soul.”

The group then goes to a German cemetery five minutes away and the process is complete.

McGriff had a daughter with his first wife, who died in a car accident more than 40 years ago. He and Marianne have been married 28 years. Her daughter, Sarah, went to Germany to start a school, married a German man and has two children and lives there.

“When I speak, I point out that the people I was trying to kill in 1944 are now my friends and

my loved ones,” McGriff said. “All the people we hated and wanted to kill 70 years ago, the Japanese, the Italians and the Germans, are our friends. Maybe someday the people we are fighting today will be our friends. Probably won’t happen, but it would be a blessing if it did.”

Marianne’s assist World War II veteran Carver McGriff frequently points out how special it is that his wife, Marianne, speaks fluent French, helping him in his frequent trips. Marianne lived in France for a spell while in college.

“Accompanying Carver on trips to Normandy has been a special privilege to share this memorable experience in our country’s history with someone dear to me that actually lived this very historical event,” Marianne said.

This August will bring their sixth tour.

“We’ve been blessed to come back and take family and friends at least an additional six times,” Marianne said.

“Each time continues to impact me at a deep emotional level. I don’t think either one of us ever anticipated it to go beyond the first one. Now, we both believe that God has called us to this ministry. Our focus is helping others remember and understand the sacrifices that were made so that we might enjoy the freedoms we do, as well as continue to build our relationships with the French people.”

‘Draft Mitch’ could work The former CEO of Angie’s List, Bill Oesterle, had a good idea. You might have heard that his Draft Mitch campaign was under way. Regardless of whether Gov. Mike Pence is tapped

by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as a vice-presidential running mate, we liked the idea. (Trump’s decision was delayed from Friday in the wake of the horrific terror attack at Nice, France.) But former Gov. Mitch Daniels has no interest in leaving his post as president of Purdue University. Daniels, whose fiscal sharpness and thoughtful leadership were among the qualities he deployed to bring Indiana to the fore on so many levels, leaves Hoosier Republicans behind the 8-ball if Pence were the VP selection. With Pence, whom we believe works with good and pure intentions, there have been a few, but fairly major, train wrecks along the way (the state news agency idea, and RFRA and abortion measures among them) to have him in the No. 2 role. We wish Daniels had been squarely in the race for the White House from the start. Alas, no chance.

As much as Indiana would have benefitted by Daniels’ return to the governor’s office, were that a possibility, the nation would more prosper from his leadership and steady but no-nonsense approach on so many fronts. It won’t happen. As to Trump, he is starting to gain in national polling, and we believe he will win Indiana in the Nov. 8 election. Still, his namecalling flamethrower persona is continuing to grate on even the most ardent Republicans we know, but that won’t dissuade them. Is Trump the lesser of evils, as some have suggested?

Remember, the comparison is to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Barn door backboards Commentary by Terry Anker As a kid growing up in rural northern Indiana, much of our family’s entertainment consisted of visits with the array of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, scattered across the county. To me, with only one sibling 11 years younger, it was fun to have playmates closer to my own age.

The adults would be in good spirits from a bit of euchre.

In the summer, as night would wane, Dad would beckon across the barnyard to come wash-up before we’d head home for the night. Naturally, we kids would delay, playing one more game of horse against the barn door backboard. But eventually, time would run out, and we’d be collected, scrubbed and loaded for the short trip home.

But winter, particularly the most chilling February nights, would be more of an ordeal. Since we’d mostly stay indoors, we’d be easier for our parents to corral. They’d march us to the kitchen door, where our

boots, mittens, coats, scarves and hats had landed in a glorious heap, following our failed attempt to build the “world’s biggest snowman.” Once sorted, we’d be bundled as if the trip was by dogsled via the Iditarod rather than by Pontiac via a few miles on U.S. 24. Then, we’d stand awaiting the adults to make their final goodbyes. And, we’d stand some more. Each hug, laugh and final story was exponentially increased by the number of grown-ups and their years of association. Eventually, even as our rubber boots were filling with perspiration, the car would be deemed warm enough, and off we’d go - safe and snug on a cold, dark night. As a child, I thought the delay was an interruption; but now, I see that it was a part of the journey.

A few months back I chipped one of my already-crooked bottom-front teeth. Luckily my horse-size chompers up humor top hide the snaggle-tooth for photo ops, but it’s quite noticeable when I talk, which, unfortunately, I have to do on occasion. I could have it filed down, but even pretend manicures make me flinch.

My dentist, however, said not to worry, dubbing me “charmingly imperfect.” I’ve decided to adopt this phrase as a mantra and apply it to all of my less-than-ideal attributes. The thigh cellulite that even half-Ironman training wouldn’t destroy?

Charmingly imperfect. Those laugh lines and age spots that no amount of Retin-A will vanquish? Charmingly imperfect! And how about my non-existent belly button? Definitely imperfect but seriously charming!

(Side note: I actually don’t have a belly button. A twin pregnancy wreaked havoc with my mid-section 15 years ago, leaving not only an umbilical hernia but pounds of excess, de-elasticized skin. The ensuing corrective tummy tuck successfully removed the flab, but sadly could not save the button.)

The point is, even though Photo Shop could charge me extra, these are the features that make me, me. And now that I’m in my 40s, I’m finding it much easier to embrace them (although I do still long for a bikini and will occasionally attempt Hollywood special effects to give the hint of an “innie”). In fact, I think it’s kind of cool to walk around with charmingly imperfect characteristics, like unusually long second toes.

(Another side note: I thought I had exhausted my list of charmingly imperfect attributes, but then the spouse read this and suggested a few more – bubble-butt, slight overbite, flat chest, invisible eyelashes.

Okay, okay. I get it. Thank you, Doo.) So yes, pre-varicose veins are creating a perverted but oddly-accurate map of the Mississippi River delta on my milky-white calves, but by God, I am charmingly imperfect, jacked-up teeth and all.

Garrison Keillor performed his final “Prairie Home Companion” episode last week, capping things off with a final visit humor to Lake Wobegon, his mythical hometown where “all the women are strong, all the men are good looking and all the children are above average.”

I watched the final performance on YouTube – a decision I regretted because for four decades, he was a disembodied voice. That might sound odd, but seeing his body took away some of the magic for me. If you love radio, you know what I mean.

While I didn’t know Keillor personally, there were a few intersecting points in our lives.

The first began with Fred Newman, his intrepid sound-effects man. Fred made each performance sparkle with accompanying mouth noises that brilliantly mimic explosions, trains, tornadoes and virtually anything that Keillor threw at him.

I met Fred in 1981 in New York City, while I was the host of the morning show on WABC Radio. I had seen Fred doing his “act” on Fifth Avenue and asked him to come on the program. He was an instant hit and went on to a successful career. His act caught Keillor’s eye

(or ear, really) and he soon became a permanent part of “Prairie Home Companion.”

I hadn’t seen Fred in nearly 25 years, but when Keillor performed at the Indiana State Fair in the late ’90s, Fred was approximately 75 yards away from me as he moved across the stage for rehearsal. I screamed: “Hi, Fred Newman!”

“Oh my goodness!” he responded. “That’s Dick Wolfsie.” Talk about a good ear for sounds.

I met Keillor that night. I told him my favorite “Keillorism:” “People who think going to church makes you a Christian must think that living in a garage makes you a car.”

This past week I relived some of my favorite “Prairie Home” episodes over the years on YouTube. My wife walked in the room and thought I had dozed off.

No. I had simply closed my eyes.

IU Health launches Video Visits

IU Health Video Visits allows patients to see a physician or practitioner without ever leaving their home.

“This is an opportunity technology for a patient to connect with a physician on many types of devices,” said Ian McDaniel, executive director of telehealth and retail services at IU Health. “Physicians can interact and interface with that patient via video and voice.”

Video Visits are used for low-intensity problems, such as coughs, colds, flus, skin McDaniel conditions and eye conditions. A pilot program was launched internally and used for several months with IU Health employees and dependents.

McDaniel said many patients have interacted with a physician via phone, and this is a step up for physicians to diagnose problems.

“Physicians have been practicing with less information across the course of history, and now we are given the opportunity to interact with more information than we had on the telephone,” McDaniel said. If a physician believes a patient requires lab testing, they will be referred to IU Health.

Other area hospitals are exploring similar ways of interacting with patients.

“We believe that tele-medicine as a general field is the future of healthcare delivery,” said Dr. Richard Fogel, chief executive officer for St.Vincent. “It allows another access point into the healthcare system, and it is particularly useful for people who live in rural areas. It doesn’t replace a face-to-face meeting, but it is in addition to it.”

“We are doing our due diligence to see what vendor and platform should be used,” Paris said. “We will certainly start slowly as we learn the benefits and the risks of the new technology.”

The Indiana General Assembly passed a law that went into effect July 1 that allows physicians to prescribe medications over real-time video visits.

McDaniel said currently, insurance is not accepted over the video visits, and each visit costs $49 and lasts approximately 20 minutes.

McDaniel said the hospital didn’t want to wait to get insurance contracts signed for the video visits, as that would delay the technology’s access to the public. Billing insurances in the future is a possibility.

The IU Health Video Visits application is free and available through Apple and Android app stores. To use the program on a computer with video features, visit iuhealthvideovisit.org.

“It helps them age in place,” said Guynn, a Noblesville resident who became the first full-time executive director at the Noblesvillebased nonprofit in September 2015.

The is the first year for the center’s Celebration Street Fair, which will be held 4 to Guynn 8 p.m. July 31 at Mustard Seed Gardens, 77 Metsker Lane, Noblesville.

The event will feature The Doo! Band (formerly Zanna-Doo!).

The admission ticket includes one drink ticket. There will be a wine tasting with an adult ticket purchase. Samples and tastings from Hamilton County restaurants will be available. There will be carnival games for children and adults. Raffle prize tickets will be on sale.

Guynn said all of the proceeds from tickets and raffle tickets go to the Shepherd’s Center.

“It’s just a fun, family-friendly evening,” she said. “We’re hoping it can be an annual event for us.”

Guynn said the center has two main programs, with one called Together Today.

“It’s a socialization program (for ages 55 and over) where we bring seniors together to have community and prevent isolation,” Guynn said. “We also have a Community Caring program (for ages 65 and over), which is specifically for low-income seniors.

We help them with just about anything they need to maintain their independence in their own home.”

That includes visits, transportation and house cleaning.

The center, which started in 1985, began with the socialization program.

Current Publishing, Crew Car Wash and Fuzion Inc., serve as gold-level sponsors of the events.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $40 for a couple and $10 for children 10 and older. Children 10 and under are admitted free. Tickets increase $5 the day of the event.

By Amanda Folkens for Family Features Serves: 1 Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1/2 tablespoon seasoning pepper • 1 to 2 1/4-inch thick ham slices (about the same thickness as the bread) • Cooking spray • Pineapple slices (can be fresh or canned) • 2 slices sourdough bread Directions: Preheat grill to high heat.

Mix brown sugar with pepper to create a rub mixture.

Using your hands, massage the rub onto

both sides of the slices of ham. Ham slices should be completely covered (front and back) with brown sugar mix.

Place ham slices on sheet of lightly greased foil, then place onto grill.

On separate sheet of greased foil, lay pineapple slices out, uncovered.

Cook for six to eight minutes or until brown caramelization appears around edges of ham and pineapple.

Remove ham and pineapple from heat and assemble onto toasted sourdough bread.

Blueprint for Improvement: Multi-room home transformation Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background info: This 1970s home in Zionsville’s Rain Tree neighborhood was in need of an update. With updates to almost every room in the house, the homeowners enjoy both the function and aesthetics more than ever.

Before problems: Besides the dated aesthetics throughout the home, many spaces in the home had issues with function. The first level felt chopped up, the master bathroom and closet were too small and the kids’ spaces needed more functional cabinetry.

After

After solutions: The goal was to create additional and more functional space with an updated look throughout the entire home.

1. Many of the first-level walls were opened up. This allowed spaces to be reconfigured, and for one to flow into the next— perfect for day-to-day activities and for entertaining.

2. The master bathroom footprint was enlarged, allowed for “his” and “her” vanities, as well as a much larger shower. The attic space adjacent to the master bath contained an unused sauna, which was removed to insert a new functional closet system.

3. The kids’ bathrooms were updated with new tile, lighting and plumbing fixtures.

4. More transitional finishes and brighter lighting were updated throughout the rest of the home to reflect the homeowners style.

Moving mountains with pathos Commentary by Jordan Fischer We’re talking pathos this week, but if you think that means we’re starting off with Aristotle, you’re wrong. grammar guy We begin with Sarah McLachlan.

You don’t even have to be in the same room to feel a tug on your heart strings when her ASPCA commercial comes on. In fact, I bet right now, even just me mentioning the commercial has that song playing in your head. You know which song.

Pathos, Aristotle says, is the rhetorical appeal to emotion. The emotion can be vanity, or fear, or anger, or lust – it’s pathos all the same. And if you don’t believe me that pathos is powerful, ask Sarah’s snaggle-toothed kitten friends.

Here’s what Aristotle had to say about the second of the modes of persuasion: “The Emotions are all those feelings that so change men as to affect their judgments, and that are also attended by pain or pleasure.”

Note the “affect their judgments” part. Anger and lust and even joy cloud our otherwise reasonable faculties and make us prone to things we wouldn’t normally do – like supporting an extreme policy proposal, or listening to country music. You won’t find a demagogue who ex-

Now, if you were, say, a candidate running for the presidency of the United States, you might appeal to fear and anger by warning that criminals and rapists were flooding over the border.

That’s pathos.

And if you were an opposing candidate, you might reply that voters “cannot put the safety of our children and grandchildren” in said opponent’s hands.

That’s pathos, too.

I’m not here to tell you who to vote for. I’m not even here to talk about “truth” – because pathos isn’t about truth. It’s about emotion. As any boxer knows, if you can get your opponent angry – if you can get in their head – you’re in control of the fight. And many the politician believes if he can get us worked up, he can control our vote.

Next week we leave emotion behind and talk about the thinking man’s mode of persuasion: logos.

Josefov: A place to remember Commentary by Don Knebel Josefov, a small area in Prague, remembers the struggles and successes of European Jews. Ironically, the area surtravel vives because of Adolph Hitler’s efforts to exterminate them.

Jews began living in Prague during the 10th century. When church leaders announced that Christians should not touch Jews, Prague’s Jewish residents were forced to live in a separate walled area near Old Town Square. In 1389, a pogrom launched by Prague’s clergy on Easter killed approximately 3,000 Jews living in this ghetto. Residents of the ghetto were required to bury their dead in a small cemetery inside the walls. By the early 16th century, conditions were better in Prague than in other cities, and Jewish intellectuals came to Prague’s ghetto from throughout Europe. Mordechai Maisel, a wealthy philanthropist who became the ghetto’s mayor, built synagogues for the new arrivals and erected a Jewish town hall. In 1781, Emperor Joseph II, the son of Maria Theresa, lightened restrictions on

Prague’s Jews, allowing burials outside their cramped ghetto. Grateful residents named the area “Josefov” in Joseph’s honor.

As Nazis sent thousands of Prague’s Jews to concentration camps, Hitler ordered the historic buildings of Josefov preserved for a planned “Museum of an Extinct Race” and transferred Jewish artifacts from around Europe to Prague for his museum. Today, those buildings and artifacts constitute a museum complex honoring the Jewish history of Prague. Among the six Josefov synagogues open to visitors is the Pinkas Synagogue, with the names of 77,297 Czech and Moravian victims of the Holocaust inscribed on its interior walls. Another highlight is the Jewish cemetery, containing 12,000 jumbled stones and monuments. One of the largest marks the grave of Mordecai Maisel.
