Concrete examples of local poems

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Two Zionsville residents can now see their names in cement.

Cartown news rie Ciula and Megan Alms won the adult and youth categories, respectively, for the Zionsville Cultural District’s Ciula first sidewalk poetry contest. The poems will soon be stamped into sidewalks around town. For now, they can be seen on the Sycamore Street sidewalk between First and Main streets.

Future locations for their works as well as the poems by second-place winners will be announced when the town has established a schedule with contractors.

Ciula has been writing for many years, but this is her first published poem. Her inspiration came while walking her son home from school.

“During the walk home, I was thinking about how much can be conveyed through only a split-second greeting and how powerful a smile or a nod can be,” Ciula said.

She put her thoughts into a blog post.

When she heard about the contest, she thought the topic could be abbreviated and “might be fun to come across on a sidewalk somewhere,” she said.

“My simple hope is that these sidewalk-strewn words offer a reminder that we’re all here together and that there is a strong and sustaining Alms beauty in our connection, in our togetherness,” Ciula said.

Alms’ poem conveys a feeling of connection while traveling, “leaving slivers of soul on the roads that I stroll,” her poem reads.

Sidewalk poetry projects have been popular in other cities around the world, but this is the first of its kind in Indiana.

The Arts Council of Indianapolis is sponsoring a similar contest for poetry that will appear in downtown concrete near the Central Library.

Stamps of the poems can be reused multiple times. One created with the Town of Zionsville logo can be seen alongside the poetry.

Dispatches Coffee With a Cop — The Zionsville Police Dept. invites the public to Coffee With a Cop from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 20 at McDonald’s, 50 Brendon Way. Community members can meet with officers, ask questions and learn more about the department’s work.

Learn about the Catholic faith — St. Alphonsus Liguori, 1870 W. Oak St. will host two events for those interested in learning about the Catholic faith. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults open house will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 19. Come enjoy drinks and snacks while learning about the RCIA program. The Zionsville Economic Redevelopment Commission delayed a vote on selling Creekside Corporate Park for development $6.1 million during a special meeting July 10. A separate committee will meet prior to the next scheduled RDC meeting July 24 to better understand the financial impact to the town.

Zionsville-based Rockland Development wants to purchase approximately 41 acres of developable land for $150,000 per acre. It would include 13 developable lots, excluding those occupied

by LIDS and DK Pierce.

“I agree that we need to expedite and move forward as quickly as we can, but we also need a little bit more information on numbers,” RDC Johnson President Brad Johnson said.

“We’ve got to look at the revenue side of things,” RDC committee member Luke Phenicie said.

One sticking point is an option for the town to repurchase the property if the Phenicie development requirements are not met. The RDC discussed whether the town would be able to afford an increased selling price.

“I like the buyback if it’s at cost,” RDC committee member Wade Achenbach said.

Paul Kite, one of the principals of Rockland Development, said that the purchase agreement commits to developing at minimum one lot per year, but Rocklord is willing to commit to more aggressive building options.

Kite said Rockland is working with an investor who wants to own some of the buildings in the office park and outlined two possible scenarios.

“The plan is that we would either develop the lots on a speculative basis with an anchor or without an anchor tenant and build buildings,” he said. “The second scenario is we would contribute the land to a development partnership as equity for another developer that would want to build a building.”

The Town of Zionsville borrowed $3 million to purchase the land and has invested nearly $7.7 million in developing the office park, according to Wayne DeLong, director of planning and economic development for the Town of Zionsville.

Background-check policy updated

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees met July 10 to discuss revisions made to the background-check policy and distribution of teacher appreciation grants.

What happened: The board approved an updated version of the background-check policy on second reading.

What it means: Zionsville Community Schools employees must report an arrest, filing of criminal charges or conviction of criminal charges to the superintendent within two days of the incident. ZCS will conduct a criminal history check on employees every five years.

What happened: The board held a first reading of a policy regarding the distribution of teacher appreciation grants from the Indiana Dept. of Education.

What it means: In accordance with state law, the superintendent will determine the stipend amount for teachers evaluated as effective on their most recent performance evaluation. Those given a highly effective rating will receive a 25 percent greater stipend.

What’s next: The board will hold a second reading at 6 p.m. Aug. 14.

What happened: Paula Williams, director of Unified Student Services, delivered an update on the past two years of activities within the department.

What it means: Williams said ZCS is combining developmental preschool with universal preschool with one additional resource teacher to keep everyone connected.

ZCS elementary students are being “pushed in” classrooms instead of “pulled out” for specific special education services. Middle school and high school classrooms are working more collaboratively to blur the lines between general and special education programs.

On Saturday, Indianapolis resident Andrew Bartolacci will wake up to a breakfast of French toast sticks with his event 1-year-old son before driving to Butler University to run for eight hours straight.

“My lungs will be able to take the eight hours, it’s whether or not my legs will give out, that’s the question,” he said.

On July 22, Bartolacci will run in the third annual 8-Hour Dream Endurance Race.

Participants run as far as they can in eight hours. Bartolacci’s goal is to break 40 miles for the first time.

Fishers resident Brad Baumgartner runs 2,000 miles a year—a mileage he said is necessary when running four to five ultramarathons each year. During the race, he hopes to run 40 to 45 miles as practice for a 50-mile ultramarathon in September.

For Baumgartner, finishing races pushes him to do longer events.

“When I finished, I thought I could go farther,” he said. “There’s something about finishing and feeling not quite done, so you want to try the next thing.”

Zionsville resident Mike Cole, who’s shooting for 50 miles, said the feeling of accomplishment is what drives him.

“The feeling when you’ve run faster than you thought you could or run farther than you thought you could or placed higher than you thought you could, that feeling is like no other,” he said.

For 25 years, Cole has run for that feeling, but at the endurance race he’s running for something more. He hopes to raise at least $500 for his friend’s charity—the Joseph Maley Foundation, which raises mental health awareness and offers inclusive athletic programs for children.

Family prepares to adopt 3 siblings from Bulgaria

With only a few months left to wait, Mark and Mary K Purvis will soon be parents of four.

Mark and Mary K have adoption been married for 11 years and have a 9-year-old son, Cooper. Mark said they started thinking about adoption because they wanted to grow their family but waited too long to have more children.

“Obviously, Cooper, Mary K and I have been a family for a long time, but it just feels like we’re in limbo right now and we can’t actually put the whole family together,” Mark said.

The Carmel residents, who attend Zionsville Presbyterian Church, began the adoption paperwork in January 2015, originally indicating they wanted two young siblings from Bulgaria. Because the Purvises had been waiting for almost a year, they had to update some areas of the paperwork, and at that time they decided also to increase the ages and number of siblings for which they were searching.

“We talked about it a lot and decided one more. If we’re doing two, why not three, especially to keep a sibling group together,”

By April 2016, the Purvis’ were matched with a group of three siblings.

“It became really real at that point, where before we were talking about it and people were asking questions, but we just said, ‘We’re waiting,’” Mark said. “For me, it just hit home that this is happening, and this is happening soon. That was a good feeling.”

In May, Mark and Mary K spent four days in Bulgaria meeting their soon-to-be daughter, 3, and two sons, 5 and 7.

“Leading up to it, we were both kind of nervous and not sure what to expect, but the moment we met them, the two little ones ran right up,” Mary K said. “The older is a little more apprehensive because he is older and he is a little more aware of everything. The days we spent with them, it was great.”

Mark and Mary K will take one more trip to Bulgaria to finalize all of the paperwork and bring the children home, which they are hoping to do in August or September.

Idiomatically speaking

Commentary by Ward Degler

Where would we be without our idioms?

No victory would ever be “in the bag.” No one would ever “kick the buckplain talk et.” Seldom, if ever, would anyone go on a “wild goose chase.” And it would be impossible for someone to “let the cat out of the bag.”

Something that was “in the bag” was a sure thing. In 1916, when the New York Giants had won 26 games in a row, the bat boy was ordered to take the ball bag back to the clubhouse. To the local sportswriters, that meant no more balls would be needed because the game was “in the bag.”

To “kick the bucket” means to die. Its roots go back to early slaughter houses where butchered animals were secured on wooden beams called buckets.

The phrase has endured even though no one since Cain killed Abel has anyone literally kicked a bucket at death. Except in the movie, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” when Jimmy Durante dies after a car wreck. As he draws his final breath, he kicks a rusty bucket lying alongside the road.

That movie followed a wild cast of characters on a “wild goose chase” looking for lost money from a bank robbery. That idiom has nothing to do with geese, but instead refers to a horse race where the horses fan out behind the leader resembling a “V” of geese. Apparently, no one could come from

behind to win such a race and, presumably, an assured loss became known as a "wild goose chase."

As for “letting the cat out of the bag,” research takes us back in history when an unwary person might buy a “pig in a poke.” Apparently, butchers in bygone days weren’t always “on the up and up.” As a result, a person might purchase a prepackaged pig, only to discover upon opening the bag that it was occupied by a stray cat, not a pig.

When I was in college, a knowledgeable professor assured me that English was not an idiomatic language. I doubted that then, and I doubt it now. However, he was the prof and I was the student, so I took his counsel at “face value” and “with a grain of salt.” And even if he had “hit the nail on the head,” I realized I neither “carry all my eggs in one basket” nor “count my chickens before they’d hatched.”

And rather than let it become “a hot potato” and “add insult to injury” “at the drop of a hat,” I admitted I might be “barking up the wrong tree,” recognized that “curiosity killed the cat,” and accepted the whole shebang as “the best of both worlds” and a “blessing in disguise.”

Garden coach Marlene Brown helps clients find joy in plants, landscapes

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com As a garden coach, Myrene Brown is on a mission to empower gardeners throughout Indiana with the tips and tools to plant a beautiful garden that cover story evokes delight rather than dread.

“Gardens really should soothe rather than be one more chore in life, in my opinion,” she said.

Brown started her own business, Myrene’s Garden, in 1998 and works as a full-time garden coach, offering consultations and services that help homeowners learn how to properly plan, plant and maintain their own gardens.

She specializes in rain gardens, native plants and wildlife habitats.

“It’s basically what people’s grandmothers used to be with the kids, hands-on teaching them how to garden,” Brown said.

The Zionsville resident of 27 years said she got interested in gardening after the 1983 purchase of a home that contained extensive gardens.

Brown has a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from State University of New York at Buffalo and spent time working in a clinical microbiology lab in a hospital.

She earned her master’s in microbiology while raising her family and taking one class at a time.

Brown has three adult children and three grandchildren.

She believes her love of gardening and fresh basil has been passed on to a new generation.

“My oldest daughter is a physician but can explain pruning basil for increased production as well as I can,” Brown said. “My two sons like to cook and have lots of good ideas for using their home-grown basil in the food they prepare.”

She said people with a science or artistic backgrounds

are often drawn to gardening because it allows them to experiment with different variables and color patterns and analyze the results.

“Plants kind of lend themselves to people who have a curious mind,” Brown said.

Brown gained extensive knowledge about gardening through reading books, experimenting and becoming involved with the Boone County Master Gardeners.

Ellie Clapp of Indianapolis hired Myrene’s Garden five years ago to transform and rejuvenate her new home’s landscape. Brown helped Clapp assess the existing gardens and plants, develop a plan for removing invasive plants and add native plants to the landscape. Brown and Clapp have met almost weekly during the growing season since 2012. Clapp said during a typical consultation with Brown, they weed and water together as Brown educates Clapp about plant care, pruning and attracting pollinators.

She is a member of the six-person HABITAT C.P.R. team that set a goal of obtaining a community wildlife habitat certification for the Town of Zionsville through the National Wildlife Federation, which the town obtained in 2000. Brown said the certification means there are enough people in the Zionsville community who have committed to garden in a manner that supports pollinators and wildlife.

“You can be part of the solution of making sure the plants are there for the pollinators,” she said.

“I now know better how to prioritize needs and to care for the plants and gardens,” Clapp said. “I’ve learned to recall Myrene’s wisdom even on days I’m gardening alone.”

During their first consultation of this year, Clapp and Brown assessed winter damage, new spring growth and planted a native pussy willow.

“We’ve made plans for more, but only if the first thrives,” Clapp said. “That’s a lesson from Myrene.”

“Plants teach you how to garden. If they flourish, you know you did it right. If they die, you know you have to go back to the drawing board,” Brown said.

Brown’s goal as a garden coach is to help people have joy and peace of mind when they look upon their gardens and to provide clients with the education and tools they need to make their garden thrive.

“To me, gardens should be your pleasure in life,” she said.

Each year, Brown takes on a new focus. This year, she’s highlighting plants for pollinators, and she’s encouraging gardeners to use native plants to provide the right sources of food for pollinators.

Brown said a benefit of using native plants is knowing that they have adapted to the local weather conditions and soil type.

“If you pay attention to what grows naturally here in Indiana, there are a lot of really beautiful plants,” Brown said.

She said if you see a plant growing somewhere where no one is tending it, such as in an old cemetery, it’s likely a good bet for a low-maintenance plant, so long as it looks good.

Commentary by Terry Anker We might know spine. Certainly, we’ve learned the definition of cover. But what is the fore edge, hinge and free endpaper?

Our lexicon must include hand-stitched, end-stained and hardbound. Although one would be hard-pressed to find someone who has never held a book, few of us show more than a limited command of the vocabulary required to describe its many components. Most focus on the ink at its most fundamental, the ideas. The means of conveyance, well, means very little.

For generations, we humans have scribbled our hopes, aspirations and accumulated knowledge into the most permanent and accessible forms our technology would allow. From stone tablets to books took centuries; yet, the conversion to the digital may be done in a single lifetime (or less).

The great mass of collected human knowledge has largely been made electronic.

Convenience, low-cost and adjustable font size have driven us to rethink the way we approach how we absorb information. And so what?

Bits and bytes are increasingly controlling the way we live. Currency, communication, and, now, data all move without any of the pesky need for an actual physical specie. Still, is it wise to judge a Kindle by its cover? If a book is edited not with a pen but with a keyboard, can we show its evolution, or devolution, from one iteration to the next?

Someone recently reminded that books, by their very nature, are romantic and mysterious objects. At sight, we don’t know what they will bring us. Will our smartphone come to embody the same promise?

READER ’ S V I EW Primrose a great experience for teacher, son Editor, I have been living in Zionsville with my family since the spring of 2012. We chose Zionsville because of its reputable school district. My husband and I were looking to live in a community with good schools which can help our son grow. We found Primrose School in Anson/Zionsville when our son was 2 1/2-years-old, and I was able to get a job there as a teacher.

My son will start first grade in public school after about 4 1/2 years, and I am pleased to admit that the experienced teachers and staff/management and professionally prepared curriculum in Primrose have helped my son learn, grow and develop in every area more than what we expected. During this period the management and staff of Primrose have worked with us whenever we had some time conflict or scheduling issue to take care of our son or even change my work schedule. The management of Primrose

School also helped me with my educational expenses while I was studying at Ivy Tech Community College. I was able to graduate magna cum laude in 2015.

As an immigrant who speaks English as a second language, Primrose in Anson/ Zionsville has been a wonderful place to start my career in Indiana even though I had about 10 years of experience in my home country. I, along with my husband and son, would like to thank everyone in Primrose School in Anson/Zionsville, in particular the management, Mrs. Brezette; the staff Mrs. Coomes and Ms. Wilson; and my son’s teachers. The past five years of my career in Primrose School, with all its ups and downs, was rewarding, and I am proud of it. I made good friends with staff, teachers and even children and their parents. I will miss them and I wish them luck.

I pretty much live at Meijer. Six to seven gallons of milk a week, five boxes of cereal, two bunches of bananas ... humor you get the picture. The point is, I have my grocery shopping down to a fine art. Many of you, however, do not. So here ya go.

Have a list. This is Grocery 101 here, people. A list won’t prevent you from buying things not on the list but will ensure you get everything that your family deemed important enough to actually write on the list. Doo’s deodorant, Maddie’s pencil sharpener, cat food, etc., — essentials that you will definitely hear about if forgotten.

Just do it!

I shouldn’t have to mention this, but I realize I am dealing with amateurs: Always park as close to a cart corral as possible.

Only use the self-check line if 75 percent of your items are pre-packaged. You are not a professional cashier! You have not memorized the scan code for radicchio!

Never get in the check-out line behind women over the age of 30 (unless it’s me).

Rather, shoot for male patrons. They purchase less, never use coupons and usually pay with cash. Men don’t want to be there, so they’re focused on a quick exit.

Organize your goods on the conveyor belt into these categories: cold/frozen products, boxed goods, cans/jars, produce and smooshables. This allows for an efficient bagging process and ensures that dairy and meat stay colder (Doo always teases me about this whenever I allow him to tag along, but just this weekend I had a cashier actually thank me for my anal-retentive organization and confirm that this technique does in fact speed up check-out. Take that, Doo!). Make me proud! Peace out.

Pie in the eye Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Hal Fryar passed away recently at 90. If you don’t know who he is, maybe the name Harlow Hickenlooper will ring humor a bell. Harlow Hickenlooper is tough to say. Hal Fryar will be tough to forget. They are one and the same.

Hal was the host of several children’s television shows in Indianapolis throughout his 43-year career, including a longtime gig on WFBM-TV (now WRTV-6), where he introduced Three Stooges movie shorts. In 1965, Fryar was cast in the original Three Stooges movie, “The Outlaws Is Coming,” playing the part of Johnny Ringo. In 2008, he was inducted into the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame.

Hal loved performing on live TV, a passion he and I shared. But there was a strain in our relationship — a mock competition between us. It began when Hal boasted that the Three Stooges hit him in the face with a pie, citing it as proof of his friendship with the trio.

Not to be outdone, I proudly proclaimed that I had once been similarly victimized by the one and only Soupy Sales when he came to Indy to perform at Crackers Com-

edy Club. Soupy agreed to do a live WISH-TV shoot from his hotel. That morning, as we planned, I waited at the elevator until he exited to the lobby. I mentioned to Soupy how much older he looked. When a waiter walked by carrying a pie, Soupy nabbed it and smooshed it squarely in my face.

The last time Hal Fryar and I spoke, we compared proper pie-throwing techniques.

The pie, which is usually shaving cream on a paper plate should be placed on the face using an upward motion. No grinding permitted. One eye of the recipient should be kept free of pie so he can navigate safely to a bathroom to clean up.

Useless information, you say? Not to a comedy artist like Hal. Months ago, when Hal discovered that his cancer had returned, he lamented to his son, Gary, “Gosh darn it, I was really looking forward to my 90s.” Direct and right on target. Just like a pie in the face.

Jane Kunz, co-owner of Traders Point Creamery, said the agrarian charm is part of what draws the community to it. But its dedication to organic farming and sustainable living is what earned the creamery the 2017 Conservation Award from the Garden Club of America, a nonprofit conservation advocacy organization that includes 200 local clubs nationwide.

“When I found out we won, I was in shock,” Jane said. “It’s wonderful to have a community behind us, supporting our efforts and believing in the importance of what we do.”

Traders Point is an organic dairy farm that produces milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and more. Jane also makes feed for the farm’s chickens and uses whey from

East Elevation “Senior living isn’t only underserved in Boone County but throughout the entire United States as well. The demand for nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and retirement communities is expected to balloon in the next two decades as baby boomers retire,” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “In 35 years, the number of people in the United States who are 65 or older will more than double, increasing from 40 million to 88 million. This is a need that we in Whitestown recognize and are doing everything we can to help prepare our seniors for the next phase in their life.”

Located on almost five acres on the north side of Central Boulevard at the intersection of Heartland Drive, approximately 140 of the 180 units will be in a four-story building for independent living. The other 40 units will be in an adjacent, two-story building reserved for assisted living and the Memory Care Center. A movie theater,

salon, bistro and on-site concierge are some of the many features.

According to Whitestown’s recent special census, the percentage of seniors living in the town is low now, but Norton said there is a “large percentage of residents who will be seniors in the very near future.”

“We are the fastest growing community the last six years in the state of Indiana, and we anticipate much more future growth,” he said. “That’sWest whyElevation we’re excited to welcome these two different senior community living options in Whitestown, to not only fulfill a need we currently have, but the future needs of our ever-growing town.”

Whitestown strives to attract not only new businesses but new residents — no matter their age, Norton said.

“It’s vitally important as a town that you never focus on just one or two groups. Although we are primarily attracting younger residents to Whitestown at this time, seniors are a very important part of our community,” Norton said. “By welcoming two brand new senior living centers, we are sending a message that we appreciate their value to our community and want them to enjoy their golden years here in Whitestown.”

IU Health expands urgent care news@currentinwestfield.com Residents of the northside will gain new options for highly skilled immediate care as Indiana University healthcare Health opens two new urgent care centers this summer. The first, in Broad Ripple, opened July 11. The second, on the border of Noblesville/Carmel, will open in mid-August.

Both sites are firsts for IU Health. The urgent care center at 1036 Broad Ripple Ave. is the first for IU Health inside the I-465 loop. The Hamilton County site, along the border of Noblesville and Carmel at Hazel Dell Parkway and 146th Street, is the first urgent care center for IU Health in Hamilton County.

The Broad Ripple location is a fully remodeled former bank branch while the Hamilton County center will co-occupy a new, stand-alone building with an IU Health primary care clinic and rehabilitation and physical therapy offices.

Providers focus on treating a range of less-acute ailments, including sprains and strains, cuts needing stitches, infections and allergic reactions, and broken bones using on-site X-ray machines. Both sites

will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. No appointments are needed.

“We are proud to open our latest urgent care centers in Broad Ripple and Hamilton County, bringing new options for convenient and affordable care to these markets,” stated Ron Stiver, president of IU Health system clinical services.

According to a news release from IU, average wait times at an urgent care center are less than an hour, and typical out-ofpocket costs run $30 to $100.

IU Health’s four other urgent care centers in the Indianapolis area opened in 2015 and 2016 in Brownsburg (90 E. Garner Rd.), Greenwood (996 S. State Rd. 135), Lawrence/ Fort Harrison (9165 Otis Ave.) and Plainfield (2455 E. Main St.).

RUM Punch Ingredients: • 1 1/2 oz. Don Pancho 8-year Rum • ¼ oz. Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur • ¼ oz. Orchard Apricot Liqueur • 1 oz. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice • ½ oz. Fresh squeezed lime juice • ½ oz. Simple syrup • 5 drops Bitter Truth Chocolate Bitters Preparation: Combine all ingredients in mixing glass. Add pellet ice to shaker. Shake to combine. Strain over 3 pieces of hand-chipped ice into service glass. Garnish with a lime ribbon and straw.

Ingredients: • 1 1/2 oz. Absolut Elyx • 1/2 oz. Uncle Val’s Gin • 1 oz. Basil Simple Syrup • 1/2 oz. Watermelon purée • 1/2 oz. Fresh squeezed lime juice • 5-6 Dashes Ginger Bitters Preparation: Combine all ingredients in shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain in coupe over watermelon balls For the basil simple syrup: 1 1/2 cups basil leaves, 1 quart water, 1 quart sugar.

Combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

Strain through chinois.

For the watermelon purée: After removing garnish from the watermelon, place remainder of melon in blender. After blending, strain through chinois.

‘Ring of Fire’ now on stage

By Zach Dunkin • editorial@youarecurrent.com When Tim Drake heard Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre was doing a production of “Ring of Fire,” he didn’t hesitheater tate to leave his comfy home in Minneapolis and head for Indy’s northwest side.

“It’s one of my favorite shows. I just love it,” Drake said of the musical portrait of the late country singer Johnny Cash, playing now through Aug. 13. “I jumped at the chance of doing it. The music is great. The roles are great. You can do a lot of things in it and play a lot of different instruments.

It’s a high-energy show, and it’s just a lot of fun.”

Drake should know. He played in the three-month touring version of the show, which tells the story of Cash through the performer’s iconic songbook. Drake is part of the ensemble, which has no real stars.

No one plays a specific character. Johnny Cash is the star.

“We all take turns of being different characters,” he said. “Sometimes, one woman will play June Carter. Sometimes, one woman is Patsy Cline. Sometimes, somebody plays Johnny’s brother. Then, Johnny himself. And while you are doing that you might be playing the drums or the guitar. Or the washboard, the mandolin or the piano.”

The show’s cast includes actors who also are the show’s musicians, so they must be very good at multi-tasking.

“You have to have really, really talented people, and this cast is just full of them,” Drake said.

Drake is making his debut at Beef & Boards. He has spent most of his career in Minneapolis at the Plymouth Playhouse in shows including “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” “A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline,” “Guys on

Ice,” “How to Talk Minnesotan,” and as the original Pastor Gunderson in “Church Basement Ladies.”

Drake’s father was in a country band, so as a youngster he was exposed to a lot of Cash’s music, which Drake described at autobiographical.

“You can tell about his life from beginning to end as he went through these various stages,” he said. “There’s his younger life. The death of his brother. His darker years with drugs. And his later life.

“And he played in so many different styles. From rockabilly to gospel to the blues. And his spoken word stuff was almost like today’s rap songs. And all the iconic hits are there. ‘Ring of Fire.’ ‘I Walk the Line.’ ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ Plus a lot of stuff people probably never heard of. They are all great.”

RECIPE: Rosemary Parmesan Alaskan Cod

By Sara Baldwin • editorial@youarecurrent.com Ingredients: • 2 filets of wild Alaskan cod • 3/4 cup flour • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon dairy or almond milk • 1/4 cup rosemary crostini, crushed (can also use cornmeal, panko, or any crushed chips or crackers that you have on hand) • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary • 1 teaspoon sea salt • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 1/4 cup flaked or grated parmesan • fresh rosemary for garnish (optional) Directions: Prepare by pouring 1/4 cup flour into a medium bowl. In another medium bowl, crack open the egg and add 1 teaspoon of milk. Whisk lightly with a fork.

In a third bowl, use a spoon or mallet to crush your rosemary crostini into crumbs.

Add remaining flour (1/2 cup), salt and rosemary to the crumb mixture and stir to create your breading.

Set oven to 350 degrees.

Pour 1/2 cup vegetable oil in a frying pan and turn to medium-high heat. This will allow your oil to get hot by the time you are

The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones set for Aug. 20 at ZPAC

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For many rock and roll fans, it is the ageold question. Which group is better, The Beatles or The Rolling performance Stones?

“Beatles vs. Stones -- A Musical Shootout” offers an alternating set comparison. The touring production is set for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, 1000 Mulberry St., Zionsville.

“We probably do 40 to 50 of these Beatles vs. Stones shows,” said Chris LeGrand, who performs as Mick Jagger. “We’re expanding every year.”

LeGrand and his Satisfaction/The International Rolling Stones Show and Abbey Road, a Beatles tribute band, both tour separately as well.

“We have the only full-time touring tribute band to The Rolling Stones,” said LeGrand, who is the only original member from when the band started in 2001. “We do 140 to 150 shows with just the Satisfaction band. No one comes close to that and hasn’t for 15 years. There are some other Rolling Stones bands that maybe do 25 to 30 shows. We do more shows than the others combined.”

In contrast, there are several different touring Beatles tribute bands.

LeGrand said Beatles vs. Stones started as a West Coast project, and they are just now expanding it to the Midwest.

“The concept is putting the two greatest rock and roll bands together. That might be debatable by some people,” LeGrand said.

“As far as pioneers or the British Invasion, no one was bigger than the Beatles and the Stones. What is great about the show is

it starts in the 1960s and progresses with costumes through the different eras of the bands. Obviously, The Beatles ended in 1969. We expanded the Stones into the ‘70s with the ending of the show. We take it through the glory days of the band.”

LeGrand said there is a finale with both bands.

“Every song is a hit. It’s two hours, nonstop,” LeGrand said. “You would be hardpressed to find a better tribute show going around than this show.”

LeGrand said they are considering a second cast of band members to do all the shows they have.

Blueprint for Improvement: Outdoor retreat for the family Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal was to design a multi-functional outdoor space the family could enjoy for many years to come!

1. The original wood deck was replaced with an expanded stamped concrete patio at ground level for a trip-free transition from the grass.

The stamped concrete steps have embedded lights for safety.

2. A large portion of this new patio is under a vaulted, covered structure to provide shelter in precipitation. The painted structure matches the home’s existing trim color, and the column bases are clad with a stone to coordinate with the existing brick. The new accent lighting allows the space to be enjoyed in the evening.

3. A new wood-burning fireplace was clad with the stone used for the column bases. The new grill island was clad with brick to match the base on the home — a seamless look with the home’s intended style!

Before Background Info: This home in Carmel’s Longridge Estates neighborhood is only 5 years old, but the original base level deck that was tacked onto the home was not sufficient for this growing family’s needs.

Towering achievement: Taipei 101 Commentary by Don Knebel Taipei 101, located in Taipei’s vibrant financial district, was the world’s tallest building for five years. travel It remains famous for its innovations and extensive symbolism.

Named for its 101 stories, Taipei 101 was completed in 2004 at a cost of almost 2 billion U.S. dollars. At 1,671 feet (509 meters) high, it was the first inhabited building more than half-a-kilometer high and was 188 feet taller than the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, then the world’s tallest building. Taipei 101 lost its title in 2009 to Dubai’s 2,722-foot Burj Khalif, the first building more than a half-mile tall. It retains its title as the world’s tallest green building, based on a LEED certification in 2011.

Taipei 101 is approximately 660 feet from a major fault line. To withstand both a 2,500-year earthquake and the typhoons common to Taiwan, the building includes a novel mechanism allowing the building to flex while resisting excessive swaying. A 728-ton spherical steel pendulum, 18 feet in diameter, is suspended between the 92nd and 87th floors and acts as a tuned mass damper, making the building stable even in 130 mph winds.

The design of Taipei 101 symbolically celebrates Taiwan’s economic and technological progress. The number of floors – 101 – connotes both the new beginnings of each Jan. 1 and binary code. The exterior of the building, covered in green glass, suggests a giant bamboo stalk, an ancient icon of learning and abundance. Eight sections above the base each include eight floors, reflecting the No. 8 as a symbol of prosperity. Each section resembles an antique Chinese moneybox, a connection made explicit by circular projections on each side based
