Town talks Bike Friendly recognition, road safety

By Navar Watson • news@currentzionsville.com Last week at the Zionsville Town Council meeting, Nancy Tibbett, director of Bicycle Indiana, addressed the council council regarding Zionsville’s official title as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists This certified title, which the town applied for, comes after two previously denied applications from the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Board.

“They weren’t dismayed,” Tibbett said about the board members. “They kept working, making changes [and] reviewing the feedback.”

After each denied application, board president Phil Howard was quick to implement changes.

This included a bike-to-school program, in which 1,300 students participated, and the Zionsville Bike Challenge, which saw some 33,000 miles ridden by 126 participants this year.

These developments, along with creating bike lanes on streets, eventually paid off.

Road concerns Zionsville resident Connie Brye spoke at the podium about the construction that has closed off Ind. 32 and US 421, causing semis, cars and cyclists alike to drive on the 200 S. bypass.

“We have a traffic problem out there that isn’t even funny,” Brye said. “It’s really kind of dangerous at times.”

Town Council President Steve Mundy said the town doesn’t have jurisdiction over state roads, but the council would try to influence the sheriff’s department to help the situation.

What else happened?

What happened: The council approved an ordinance creating a Non-Discriminatory Practices Review Committee.

What it means: According to the ordinance, Zionsville welcomes people of any “race, religion, color, sex, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or familial, veteran or military status.”

The five-person committee will promote equal opportunity among these different groups and protect employers/businesses from unfounded discrimination charges. The ordinance does not apply to churches, church schools/day cares and religious non-profits.

What happened: The council approved an appropriation of money to include Perry Township and three other Additional Appropriate Resolutions.

What it means: In December, the council approved two budgets – one toward the reorganization with Perry Township and one without the reorganization. The council decided to continue with the former, appropriating money from the General, Parks and Recreation and Fire Operating Funds to include Perry Township.

Furthermore, the Council appropriated $21,000 from the General Fund to support Legislative Services and $28,131 to the Administration Health Insurance as reimbursement for switching from Advantage to Auxiant insurance provider. The Council also appropriated $539,000 from the Sewer Availability Fee Fund to pay down the 2010 Sewage Works Bond Anticipation Notes.

Roundabout construction begins at US 421 and Ind. 32

Drivers are now taking alternate routes around the intersection of U.S. 421 and Ind. 32.

The intersection began its roads 45-day closure on July 6. The contractor will be transforming the four-way stop intersection into a roundabout.

The intersection is slated to reopen on Aug. 21.

The project was awarded to Calumet Civil Contractors, Inc. for $1.16 million on April 15, according to Debbie Calder, INDOT’s communications director for the Crawfordsville district.

This project will construct a roundabout at this intersection with right turn lanes for both northbound and southbound U.S. 421 traffic.

According to the INDOT release, the detour for northbound U.S. 421 traffic follows I-465 west to I-865 west to I-65 north to State Road 47 east and back to U.S. 421. The detour for eastbound Ind. 32 follows I-65 north to Ind. 47 east to Ind. 38 east to U.S. 31 south and back to Ind. 32. Traffic traveling in the opposite direction will use the same detour in reverse.

“The project was first funded in 2010,” Calder said. “It’s going to impact a lot of travelers. I’m sure they are not going to be happy with us closing that intersection.”

Calder said it should ease traffic in the future, though.

Calder shared INDOT’s position that roundabouts represent a viable traffic construction solution for traditional stop control and traffic signal intersections. Multiple studies have determined that roundabouts are effective in dramatically reducing the severity of intersection vehicle crashes when compared to traditional stop control and traffic signal intersections. The reduction in accidents is attributed to slower speeds and reduced number of conflict points. Based upon crash reduction statistics, INDOT states it believes appropriately designed and constructed roundabouts enhance motorist safety while reducing traffic delays.

He is mostly forgotten by now. Those of us who walked the downtown streets as high school students in the Plain talk 1950s still remember him, I suppose.

Everyone knew him as John the Baptist, and I’m ashamed to say I never knew his real name. In legal terms he was a panhandler, but in our hearts he was much more.

Old John was a simple, honest gentleman who graced the downtown streets of Jefferson City, Missouri for untallied years.

His routine never varied. He arrived on the bus just as the downtown stores opened their doors, carrying with him the tools of his trade: a wind-up monkey that clanged noisy cymbals together, a broken organ grinder’s organ, and a chipped collection plate from some forgotten church.

He usually wore a faded and threadbare tuxedo jacket adorned with an array of bright ribbons that testified among other things, to Second Place for some competition at an unspecified county fair. Cocked on his head at a jaunty angle was an old silk top hat.

Sometimes as he sat in front of one of the stores, he squeezed an ancient accordion

and sang lyrics to a tuneless melody. If you stopped and listened, he would look up with a giant smile and ask you for some money.

He didn’t want nickels and dimes, either. He wanted “gold money.” Pennies. Most of us carried a few in our pockets just for John.

The store owners considered him an asset, a goodwill ambassador of sorts. No one ever objected to him selecting their store to grace for the day. When the stores closed at the end of the day, he picked up his belongings, slipped the day’s take into a coin purse and got back on the bus to go home. Bus drivers never charged him to ride, and all we knew was that he lived with a relative somewhere.

Long after I moved away I learned that one day John didn’t show up at the store. Folks said the bus driver found him sitting on the bench at the bus stop. At first he thought he was sleeping.

We’ll always have panhandlers, of course.

But none of them will ever take the place of John the Baptist.

Kids’ sack lunch program responds to the needs of Boone Co. children

By Michelle Williams news@currentzionsville.com More than 2,400 children in Boone County are food insecure. In Lebanon, Hattie B. Stokes Elementary School has cover story a 78 percent free and reduced lunch rate. The students have such a great need that a food pantry exists inside the school.

The Lebanon Community of Shalom is responding to the need of food insecure children in Boone County with its Shalom Kids’ Sack Lunch Program. The program provides weekly lunches during the summer to children who are part of a free and reduced lunch rate program at any school in the county.

In the summer of 2007, an LCS board member was contacted by employees of the Lebanon Community School Corporation reporting that a group of children had knocked on the school doors asking if any lunches were being served.

“That’s where it all started, long before the Kids’ Lunch Program was in place,” said program coordinator at LCS, Lisa Williams. “The people at Shalom started by packing sack lunches for the kids in the park that summer.”

Today, the Kids’ Lunch Program serves more than 25,000 lunches to more than 5,000 kids. Lunches are packed weekly at Love Inc. and delivered through eight county-wide distribution centers. Since LCS is managed by

only one part-time employee, the entire lunch program is administered by volunteers and funded by donations.

LCS works with more than 13 large volunteer groups throughout the county to plan weekly menus, shop for food, pack the lunches, transport to the distribution centers and distribute to the children served by the program. Weekly funding requirements range from $3,500 to $5,000, and the organization operates the program without the assistance of government funding.

Each week, children are able to pick up a package that includes five lunches, a whole fruit, a book and a voucher for two percent milk from Aldi.

“It’s really important to us that the lunches are as nutritionally balanced as possible,” Williams said. “Most of these kids are stay at home kids with parents who work. They might be at the elementary or middle school stage, so they’re at home and they have to fix these foods themselves. We try to make them as easy as possible to fix as well.”

Mary Grabianowski, a Zionsville Community High School teacher and now a LCS board member, learned about the needs of the Zionsville community during the LCS annual meeting three years ago.

A member of Zionsville Christian Church, she quickly volunteered her church community to manage the need in Zionsville.

ZCC now serves as the distribution site in

Zionsville.

“They are very unique from the other sites because they have taken on doing educational workshops and activities for the kids. A lot of them are teachers in the school system and affiliated with the library,” Williams said.

The ZCC volunteer group plans weekly activities for the children – such as trips to the zoo and nature hikes – in addition to the lunches.

“If kids are fed and healthy and have good activities, then they’re going to be better educated, better adults and everything else,” Grabianowski said.

The goal of her church volunteer group is to break the cycle of poverty for the families they serve through the lunch program.

“The statistics are daunting in Boone County, and most of the kids come from families where parents work,” said Grabianowski, who encourages as many as she can to get involved with the children.

Williams has directed the program for nearly two years, working to support the overall mission.

“We’re trying to inspire and nurture the community so we can make sure there is social justice out there so that the people who are struggling in their life, especially the children, are able to get the same opportunities and have the same advantages as everyone else,” she said.

KNOW MORE The Shalom Kids’ Sack Lunch program has been in place since 2007, and started with a group of volunteers packing lunches at the Shalom House to give to kids in a nearby park.

••• All three school communities in Boone County are served: Western Boone, Lebanon Community School Corp and Zionsville Community School Corp.

••• Each week, more than 2,000 lunches are prepared, and the food required ranges in cost from $3,500 to $5,000.

••• Distribution sites are all outdoors. There are eight distributions sites across the county.

••• Many of the children served stay at home alone during summer days, and often prepare their own lunches.

Exceptional fortune

We hear it every day. This generation of Americans will probably not achieve as their parents have before them. Raging government debt, enormous unfunded and profligate promises to previous generations, an ever expanding definition of our “rights” to the financial resources of others, the rise, again, of China, and Europe’s looming collapse under the colossal weight of its own bad decisions (those are listed immediately above) are all conspiring to suffocate the American Dream and prove, once-and-for-all, that American Exceptionalism is a myth.

One knows the struggle we undertake to carry our load. But is it really harder to achieve today, or were our progenitors simply tougher than we are? Less dependent? No doubt, it is difficult to find good-paying work.

But is it really any more difficult today that it was decades before? By virtually every metric, our lives have advanced significantly – we live longer, better, and with less threat than

any people ever to grace the planet. Yet in spite of incontrovertible facts, are we giving ourselves and our kids a pass?

If the children can’t win anyway, do we adults really need to make sacrifices for their long term well-being? Cable TV is a lot more fun than a college savings plan. And for youngsters, if the American Dream is a myth (or even as some argue, unethical), why should I study hard, wait to procreate, get married, save money, and take a pass on media-sponsored hedonism?

Perhaps the myth we should excoriate is that of scarcity. It argues that there is never enough – ever. Wouldn’t our children be better raised aware of their own exceptional fortune? Life is good and they are obliged to do more from this platform. And, so are we.

Over the weekend I attended my ex-sisterin-law’s wedding. Sounds weird, I know, but she was married to my husband’s brother for 15 years and became one of my humor dearest friends. Since the divorce, we’ve stayed close, and so I didn’t hesitate when she asked me to come down to Florida for the ceremony.

The thing is, even though I like the new guy and she is clearly very happy, the whole event felt strange. I muddled through dinner conversation with her husband’s teenage daughters and their friends; I awkwardly explained my relationship to the bride during a multitude of introductions; and I ate from a potato bar, which although cool and incredibly delicious, just added to the surreal nature of the night. A potato bar!

Even more taxing however was the number of emotional outbursts and spiritual moments I found myself unwittingly a part of. For those of you who don’t know me, communal praying, crying, and hugging make up my own personal heebie-jeebie trifecta, and typically cause me to break out a disco move, an inappropriate remark or a short Broadway musical number. All fine, unless you’re at a funeral or, as was the case, a devout Christian wedding.

So when I arrived at the church and saw my sister-by-choice (that’s what I call her now) for the first time in a year, she burst into tears. Nooooooo! I wanted to run straight out the door, but instead made a fart joke and earned a few eyebrow raises from the grooms’ family.

And then I got stuck in the dressing room when her two besties announced it was time for the prayer circle. They began calling on Jesus and laying on hands, and I was just sitting there with pit stains forming, trying to suppress an urgent need to sing Abba’s “Mamma Mia.” Instead of “Amen,” I said “Are your eyelashes fake because they are amazing!” Ugh. What is wrong with me?

But I suppose that’s what sisters are for, right? Even if we’re not technically related anymore, I still know how to make her laugh.

KitchenAid puts Wolfsie in garage Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The Wolfsie’s refrigerator went to Habitat for Humanity. We don’t have a dishwasher or a stove, either. The Salvation Army humor took them away. We threw out the microwave that was over the oven. Nobody wants an appliance that’s been stuck on “Popcorn” for two decades.

For our kitchen remodeling, we moved our smaller appliances like the toaster oven and coffee pot to the garage, near our second fridge. We now use my workbench as a countertop for preparing salads, and on the front of the Prius we marinate meat for the barbecue—unless it starts to rain, in which case we just jump in the car and go out to dinner. Last night we forgot to take the boneless chicken breasts off the hood.

Our kitchen was very outdated, but I was still nostalgic when I saw the room gutted.

“We sure have some wonderful memories in this kitchen, don’t we, Mary Ellen?”

“We do? Oh yeah, like the time you used hand-washing liquid soap in the dishwasher and the entire room filled up with bubbles. Or

last July 4th when you microwaved an opened can of baked beans. How about the evening you dropped your cell phone in the garbage disposal? And Dick, you can’t forget the wonderful meals I have prepared in that room.”

“Yes, I remember that night, too.”

Life during the past week has required some adjustments. “Dick, I’m going into the garage to make a smoothie.”

“Well, okay, but you’ll have to disconnect the shop vac so you can plug in the blender.”

“I did that so we could plug in the toaster oven. Is there an outlet available for the portable microwave?”

“Not if we want the garage door to open.”

When our kitchen is completed, it will offer state-of-the-art technology for fixing a meal.

It’s a day that we will celebrate.

Mary Ellen will probably want to go out for dinner.

breaking to visit a recovery school and talk to a young person trying to spend a birthday sober for the first time in four years. Or to read the growing number of obituaries in our newspapers listing names and displaying faces of young people who had so much life left to live.

Sadly, drug overdose has overtaken car accidents as the leading cause of injury death nationwide. In Indiana, there were 1,049 deaths in 2013 which included heroin as a contributing cause.

That’s why I’m committed to leading an effort in Congress to turn the tide of addiction that has claimed too many Hoosier lives.

Recently, alongside Representative Joe Kennedy III (D-MA), I introduced legislation that will provide guidance to medical professionals on safe prescribing practices, increase resources available to first responders, reauthorize programs critical to the success of law enforcement agencies and raise national awareness of this deadly and growing problem.

This multi-pronged approach is necessary to address a complicated issue that knows no socio-economic or geographic boundaries.

Legion of Blues set for July 18

The Zionsville resident has been on a mission to share that love with his community. performance The Legion of Blues All Stars concert will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on July 18 at American Legion Post 79, 9950 E. 600 S. The proceeds from the concert will be used to benefit the Indy Honor Flight.

“I heard (on a radio show) how they send vets to D.C. to go see the memorials,” McLauglin said. “It costs $450 to send a vet and helper. So I’m trying to raise enough to send four or five at least. The sponsorship pretty much covers the cost and I do this purely for fun. I’ll probably make no money off this. I’ve got a day job so it’s just fun.”

Among the acts are the Jon Strahl Band, Kyle Bledsoe, Dicky James Power Trio, and The Fuss and Brian Keith Wallen.

McLaughlin said All Stars decides the lineup because all had performed at a past Zionsville blues concert.

This will be the 10th show McLaughlin has held in Zionsville since 2013 and sixth at the American Legion. It was called Blues on the Bricks initially before the site changed. This is the third time McLaughlin has used the event to raise money for charity.

“In Zionsville there is no what I call full volume shows, there is a guy on the corner playing acoustic guitar or synthesizer and singing,” McLaughlin said. “It was just lacking live entertainment in any kind of scale.”

McLaughlin, who moved to Zionsville three years ago, said Zionsville residents have seem to developed a broader taste in music.

“They’re more open to hearing jazz, hearing rock and roll and hearing soul,” McLaughlin said. “That’s not the image people really have of Zionsville. I’m trying to give people another reason to come to Zionsville and spend the day or evening or dinner and drinks.”

“The last show I had in excess of 100 people and I don’t see why we wouldn’t have in excess of 175 to 200 people or maybe even more at this one. We are getting sponsorship from local businesses who see benefit in live music.”

McLaughlin said the shows are always for all ages. Admission is free for those 12 and under.

“You can go for an hour or two and you don’t have to get a sitter and the kids can get in free,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said if the eight-hour show is successful, he would attempt to hold other ones like it.

McLaughlin, a member of the Zionsville Cultural District, also helps books musical acts for Zionsville’s Lincoln Park Concert Series. The series, which is held on Wednesdays in June and July, has two more concert dates (July 22, 29) remaining this summer.

Grab your basket, blanket and have a wonderful picnic savoring this fabulous and colorful Peruvian summer dish, “Causa.” This dish is made with mashed potatoes and I love it because it is so versatile!

It makes a great light meal or a beautiful appetizer. It can be layered with different fillings: seafood, chicken or vegetarian (with avocado). This sensational salad will make you look like a Latin chef!

PERUVIAN CAUSA WITH TUNA Serves: 6 to 8 Ingredients: 10 large Yukon potatoes, 2 tablespoons Aji Amarillo Pasta (yellow pepper paste) you can find it in Mexican markets, 1/4 cup of olive oil, 3 tablespoons lime juice, Salt and pepper to taste, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 2 (5-oz) cans Albacore tuna in water, 2 eggs, hard boiled, peeled and cut in quarters, 1 avocado, peeled and finely sliced, Kalamata olives, Boston let-

tuce, washed Direction: Place potatoes with their skin on into a large pot with salted water and bring to boil until tender. When cooked peel them and using a potato ricer or food mill mash them until smooth.

Add aji amarillo, lime juice, oil, salt and pepper; mix well and taste for salt.

Filling: In a bowl with a fork break tuna and mix well with mayo.

Assemble: Line a pyrex with plastic wrap. Spread 1/2 potatoes mixture on the bottom of the dish. Spread tuna mixture over potatoes. Spread remaining 1/2 potatoes over tuna.

Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate, about 30 minutes, before serving. Place half a leaf of Boston lettuce on a serving platter; invert potato pyrex onto lettuce.

Garnish with avocado, kalamata olives and eggs.

Transfer to a medium bowl and set aside. 2. Heat grill to mediumhigh. In a small bowl, whisk remaining lime juice, olive oil, and salt together. Split lobster tails lengthwise, remove membrane if desired, and brush meat with the limeoil glaze. Place lobsters on grill, meat side down, and roast for 4 minutes; turn over to shell side and grill until meat is opaque and cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes more. Transfer to a platter, garnish with lime wedges, and serve with reserved nectarine sauce.

The Indiana Dental Association has awarded Dr. Suzanne Germain of Carmel the 2015 Leadership Award. achievement This award is given to acknowledge outstanding leadership in maintaining organization and continuity within the Indiana Dental Association and dental profession.

Dr. Germain is a general dentist whose practice is in Zionsville. She launched the IDA’s Acceptance, Inclusion, Respect Program to provide targeted leadership training to a small group of promising leaders from various backgrounds in hopes they will gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to take on leadership roles in organized dentistry and in their communities. She has spoken at the American Dental Association President-Elect Conference on the importance of increasing leadership diversity and inclusion, and the IDA has received an ADA Golden Apple Award for the IDA AIR Program.

Most recently, Dr. Germain launched the

IDA’s Mission of Mercy which provided an estimated $896,000 of charitable dental care to over 1,200 patients in Indiana. Dr. Germain stepped up to the plate and felt her calling to do something to address the needs of the dental underserved. She gathered key players not only in dentistry, but also in the community to create a steering committee. From there IndianaMOM took on a life of its own.

“Dr. Sue Germain’s boundless energy and determination are impressive and inspirational,” Dr. Catherine Kroczek said, who nominated Dr. Germain. “Her participation follows her ideals. She wants to give back, period.”

Dr. Germain received the Leadership Award during the IDA’s Awards Ceremony held June 11 at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana. More than 200 dental professionals, IDA officers and representatives, elected officials and their guests attended the awards presentation. The ceremony was emceed by Dr. Jay Asdell, IDA vice president, and awards were presented by Dr. Steve Holm, IDA president and Dr. Chad Leighty, IDA president elect.

World record for pole sitting Commentary by Don Knebel One of the world’s oldest churches honors a fifth-century ascetic whose record for endurance has remained unbroken. travel The church itself originated a design that is still emulated.

The person known as Simeon the Stylite was born to a Christian family near the southern border of Turkey in about 388 A.D. At age 13, he heard a sermon about the “Beatitudes” and decided to devote his life to sacrifice and contemplation. Simeon joined a monastery as a teenager, but was asked to leave because of his extreme asceticism, which included tying a rope around his body so tightly that the flesh rotted. After departing the monastery, he went for 40 days during Lent without eating or drinking. On other occasions, he reportedly stood during the entire Lenten period.

As Simeon’s reputation for self-denial spread, people flocked to him, seeking prayers and advice. To avoid the crowds, he fled to a remote mountain top near Aleppo, Syria. When admirers followed him, he got away from them vertically by living on a meter-square platform atop a nine-foot-high pillar (Greek stylos). As curious crowds gathered in larger numbers, Simeon extended the pillar until the platform,

from which he never descended, was about 50-feet above the ground. He preached daily to the people below and occasionally wrote letters to his followers. Even emperors sought his counsel.

Simeon died in 459, having spent 37 years on his pillar. He was declared a saint and honored with the oldest surviving Byzantine church, enclosing about 53,000 square feet.

Four basilicas, oriented in the cardinal directions, formed a cross and surrounded an octagonal court encompassing Simeon’s famous pillar.

Following the example of Simeon, other “stylites” began living on pillars. Alfred, Lord Tennyson memorialized Simeon the Stylite in an 1833 poem and the Guinness Book of World Records gives him the world’s record for pole sitting. The ruins of the Church of St. Simeon the Stylite, with only the base of his famous pillar surviving, are a UNESCO World Heritage site, which have so far survived the fighting in Syria.
