As one Zionsville Police Dept. K-9 continues to make a startling recovery, another has retired from the force because of mounting health public safety issues.

Jelka, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois who was struck by a pickup truck May 15, is expected to return to full duty in August or September. She is scheduled to have her cast removed July 18.

“Hopefully, once that cast is off she will be able to ride with me to get her back into the swing of things,” said her handler, ZPD officer Josh Stutesman.

The accident left Jelka with a fractured leg, a hole in her diaphragm and a punctured lung. Veterinarians originally gave her a 5 percent chance to survive, Stutesman said, and they’ve been “absolutely shocked” at her recovery.

“She’s ready to go back to full duty,” he said. “She’s getting stronger every single day. She’s utilizing that leg a little more to walk. She’s basically getting back to her normal self with just a little bit of a limp.”

The ZPD K-9 program is funded by donations. Since Jelka’s accident, the community has raised more than $13,000 for her recovery, enough to cover a good portion of her medical bills.

“As of right now that is our plan,” he said.

“If something does change, she’ll at least be out there to thank people.”

ZPD’s other K-9, Eso, is facing a much different future after being diagnosed with hip dysplasia, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome and other issues. After much consideration, ZPD Chief Robert Knox and Eso’s handler, Sgt. Brad Keifer, decided to retire the 7-year-old Czechoslovakian shepherd to give him a better quality of life.

“It was really hard because the community really loved him and everyone in the department loved him. It was almost like retiring one of us,” Keifer said. “It was a decision that wasn’t made lightly.”

Eso joined ZPD in 2013. He is now living with Keifer, his wife and two children as a family pet. Keifer said it took a while to get used to going to work without his longtime partner.

“Coming out to traffic stops, or if we have someone who takes off running, at first my first instinct would be (to) pop the door open and he could get out and start chasing,” Keifer said. “I had to keep reminding myself I don’t have that backup with me anymore.”

Although he enjoyed his time working with a K-9, Keifer has decided to step back from that role if ZPD acquires another police dog, which is the plan.

“It’s time to let someone else do it,” he said. “We’ve got some younger guys in the department who will be great.”

New officer joins ZPD

By Annie Ventura news@currentzionsville.com On June 5, the Zionsville Police Dept. swore in its newest officer, Jack Callahan. police “I love the community around there, and it just seemed like a place where I wanted to make a career, especially with how it’s growing,” Callahan stated, noting ZPD is a growing department and he’s excited to be a part of it.

Callahan grew up in Spokane, Wash., where his father served in the U.S. Air Force. The family moved to Westfield after his father retired from the military when Callahan was in third grade.

Callahan attended IUPUI and graduated in 2016 with a degree in public safety management.

During college, Callahan had several different jobs. He worked at Hamilton County Parks and Recreation and the National Institute for Fitness and Sport.

Prior to joining ZPD, hhe worked with the Indiana State Capitol Police.

Callahan has one major career goal: To grow with ZPD.

“I have career aspirations to become a detective, and I think it’d be a great department to work my way into that,” he said.

Callahan has learned how to patrol efficiently and enjoys all aspects of his job.

“I’ve had a great time working so far,” Callahan stated. “I’ve been learning a lot and it’s been a great experience.”

All-class reunion set for July 29

The Zionsville Alumni Association will host the fifth all-class reunion from 7 to 11 p.m. July 29 at Lion’s Park. The zchs event typically draws 750 to 1,000 people and is held every three years.

“This year is a little bit more open. I think the visibility is going to be better. In looking around we talked to Lion’s Club Park, and it was an obviously iconic space in Zionsville. It’s hard to miss,” said Tim Ottinger, Zionsville Alumni Association board member and reunion co-chair.

The event will be held rain or shine with the exception of extreme weather. Various food vendors will be on hand. The event is more of a meet-and-greet format than past reunions.

“We’ve found that people want to see people they haven’t seen in a long time and catch up,” Ottinger said.

The reunion coincides with the 15th anniversary of the Zionsville Alumni Association. The celebration will include tours of the high school from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The day also will include a celebration of ZCHS alumni and faculty who have made

“Another very big part of what we always do on the same day as the reunion is the Soaring Eagle Hall of Fame Ceremony at 2 p.m. at the high school auditorium,” Ottinger said.

The all-class format is unique to reunions.

“I think individual classes struggle these days keeping in contact with people and trying to organize an event. This just kind of captures everything,” Ottinger said.

“We’ve had great sponsorships from local businesses. It just feels like it’s going to be a great event.”

Outreach is a faith-based nonprofit organization on East New York Street in Indianapolis that serves homeless young men and women (ages 14-24). Every week, nearly 100 youth walk through its Drop-In Center, where they can hang out in a safe environment, enjoy a hot meal, use laundry and shower facilities, access the food and clothing pantries, look for jobs online in the computer lab and build healthy Christ-centered relationships with Outreach staff and volunteers.

Pat Ellis of Zionsville helps once a month to prepare breakfast for that Drop-In Center. She arrives a little after 9 a.m. and works with a team of other volunteers preparing egg casserole and other such dishes. Most of the volunteers take one or two such sessions for a couple of hours each month to help out.

In addition to hospitality, some volunteers supply office-based support for the other services Outreach offers.

Staff and volunteers aim to build a trusting relationship with the youth. Together they work through struggles, develop a life plan, and search out vocational training and educational programs.

St. Alphonsus Ligouri Catholic Church in Zionsville will host its annual “You Can Call Me Al” 5K run benefiting fundraiser Croix Fer, Haiti, at 8 a.m.

July 29. Proceeds will go toward a fresh water supply, feeding children at the local school, completing the school and building functional restrooms and supplies for the newly remodeled kitchen.

“We’re looking to provide families with more options, more clean water and then completion of any other projects. It’s a humanitarian effort, and we’re doing it for the people and the children in Haiti,” event coordinator Kim Reinhart said.

The race is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

“The St. Alphonsus Knights of Columbus

believe in charity, unity and fraternity. We genuinely want to support our parish,” Grand Knight Steve Hanson said. “The fact that the proceeds benefit Haiti and our sister parish is important to us as well. The 5K is a chance for families to have some fun and give back to those in need.”

Last year, the race raised more than $5,000. This year, organizers hope to have at least 300 people participate. Registration is $25 per person. Groups of three or more are $20 for the first two people and $15 for each additional family member.

“The money that was raised last year went to some projects,” Reinhart said.

“Then we went back as a group to Haiti to make sure we were doing the projects in a way that fulfilled their need.”

New this year is a free Kids Fun Run for children 10 and younger, beginning at 9 a.m.

ZUMC partners with Indy church to provide jobs, mentors for youth

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Jim Forry spends several Fridays each summer helping Indianapolis teens pick up trash on the east side of Indianapolis, and it all started with a trip cover story to Israel in 2014.

The Zionsville resident returned from the Middle East a changed man, resolved to using his time on Earth to make a difference. He committed to helping youth in the community.

“If you don’t provide (youth) a way to be productive and successful, positively involved in society, you’re just going to have nothing but trouble,” he said. “They’re the future, so you have to somehow connect with them and give them opportunities to be productively engaged and employed.”

For six weeks each summer, Forry and other volunteers from Zionsville United Methodist Church partner with Clean for Green, a youth employment and mentoring program run from Fervent Prayer Church on the east side of Indianapolis. The program pays youth ages 13 to 19 to pick up trash along roads and recruits business, political and community leaders to educate and inspire them.

“I wanted to make sure these young people had jobs, so that’s why we started it,” said James Jackson, Clean for Green founder and lead pastor at Fervent Prayer Church.

The partnership

ZUMC’s involvement with Clean for Green traces its roots to 2015. That’s when Forry’s wife, Sue Forry, led an initiative to make ZUMC an official partner of the Ten Point Coalition, which formed in 1999 when a group of pastors collaborated to reach out, patrol neighborhoods and curb violence on city streets in Indianapolis.

As a member church, ZUMC provides funding and support of the coalition’s mission.

“I really didn’t want another parent to lose a child or a child to lose a parent to violence,” Sue Forry said. “It just breaks my heart every time that happens.”

She organizes events to provide information about Ten Point Coalition, and it was at one of those meetings in 2015 that Jackson spoke about his Clean for Green initiative.

In 2016, Jim Forry reached out to become a Clean for Green mentor.

As a mentor, Jim supervises youth as they work and ensures they are attentive during presentations. He said it was a wonderful experience last year, and he is committed to participating as long as he can.

“Anytime you improve anybody’s lot in life, it has a multiplying effect that you probably don’t ever see,” he said. “Anytime you do something that leads to somebody being productive, that’s a big plus for them and society.”

Community support

Clean for Green began in 2012 and has grown in size and donations. Funding for stipends for youth and mentors, as well as for the breakfast and lunch, comes from grants, churches or philanthropic support.

After breakfast and a message from a

speaker, youth are separated into groups led by an adult supervisor-mentor and travel to a specified site for work. They return to the church for lunch and another presentation before receiving their stipend and going home.

“That whole thing is aimed at showing (youth) how you act in public,” Jim said.

“You take instruction. You listen. You’re responsible. That’s the biggest piece.”

Melissa Turentine, 14, an incoming freshman at Warren Central High School, said she’s been inspired through the program to think about launching a similar initiative to benefit youth and the community when she’s older.

“I’ve learned that a lot of people litter, and it’s not good,” she said. “I’ve learned to take better care of the community. If we don’t take care of the community, then nobody else will care.”

Commentary by Terry Anker The law of terminal velocity holds that if an object is falling from a great height, it will gain speed only until it reaches the attraction limit of the gravity pulling it earthward. In other words, the planet is drawing the thing to it (defining its weight).

Without gravity, the object would not fall at all – and would have no “weight” in the way we might imagine. Please forgive the physics lesson, but the notion that all things will come to their natural limit is an intriguing one.

Although we may find our constraints at different paces, each, in due time, will max out! At a wedding recently, the otherwise lovely outdoor affair was witness to an approaching, and ominous, rainstorm. Even as the staff scurried to move the band and other gear inside before the squall, one imagined what would be the harm if we all got a little wet? In the first moments, we might scramble to protect delicate garments or arrangements of hair. But as the drops came, we’d soon be wet. So wet that we couldn’t get any wetter. We would achieve the terminal velocity of wetness.

Could we apply the same concept to others of our fears? Is there a maximum amount of stress someone can take before reaching terminal stressocity – the point where no more can be managed or absorbed? And, if so, should we all relax just a bit knowing that a breaker switch is standing guard? Just as a cup can only hold so much liquid, should we think more about its contents and have less concern for the overflow?

The art of losing, replacing things Commentary by Ward Degler I’m losing things again. It happens when my collection of stuff reaches critical mass. Suddenly, no plain talk matter what I’m looking for, I can’t find it.

This time it’s my portable air tank. Not something easily lost, you might say, being large and bright red and all. But then you haven’t seen my shop, the shed or the barn. You could hide a Greyhound bus in my shop, and maybe the fuselage of a World War I biplane in the barn.

I’m also missing a hammer, a pair of pliers, a hatchet and a carpenter’s square. Actually, I think I found the pliers in the studio last week. I had used it to remove some paintings from their frames.

Other things are missing, too. I don’t know what they are because I haven’t looked for them yet. But I’ll need them one day, and they will have vanished.

While searching for them, however, I will find some of the other things I’ve lost.

Maybe my hatchet or the square.

Part of this is because I’ve reached an age where I forget things. Like putting tools away when I’m finished with them.

I used to be good about that. At least I

think I was. I forget.

Mostly, losing stuff hasn’t slowed me down. That’s because when I lose something, I replace it. Like a lot of guys who lose things, I now have two of everything.

My hammer, for instance. In another lifetime I was doing a major remodel on an ancient farmhouse in the Green Giant district of Minnesota. One day I was nailing cedar siding to the outside of the house. I came down the ladder, picked up another board and climbed back up. When I reached for my hammer, it wasn’t there.

For the next hour I looked for it. Not finding it I got into my truck, drove into town and bought a new one at the hardware store. Back at the farm, I walked up to the ladder and found my other hammer hanging on one of the rungs.

Since I need the air tank, I’ll probably buy another one. Then I’ll find the old one. And maybe even my hatchet and square. I’m not optimistic about the Greyhound bus, though.

It occurred to me that Doo and I are in the midst of a monumental year of parenting. Our youngest turned humor 13 in the spring, leaving us with only teenagers as roommates. Then the twins celebrated their 16th birthdays yesterday, after having recently obtained driving permits. And barring incarceration, we’ll be dumping our oldest curbside at his yet unnamed IU dormitory in just six short weeks. Go us!

Not surprisingly, I’m frequently asked, “How do you feel about (insert milestone)?”

The answer is always a resounding, “Faneffing-tastic!” I’m not kidding. True, when I reflect on my role as a mother in the context of preparing my precious little angels to go out into the world as responsible, kind, civic-orientated adults, I’m almost always second-guessing myself. Do they really understand the importance of recycling? Should I have listened more to their problems and fixed less? Why does the Chore Chart never seem to work?

But when I stand back and look at the young men and women they’re becoming, I can easily give myself and Doo pats on the back. First, they all survived. That may not sound like a big deal, but back in 2004, when I had three in diapers and a fourth who liked to take his pants off at the public library while screaming, “Mommy, wipe my bottom,” my mantra was simply “Keep them alive until dinner.” Second, all are on track to eventually find jobs and move out. I’m 95 percent confident that none of my children will end up as basement-dwelling moochers in their 30s.

So congratulations to Doo and me. First phase of parenting almost complete!

Death by vending machine Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I just returned from my brother’s wedding in New York City, and I am happy to report that things went off humor without a hitch ... except for Peter. He got hitched for the first time, which was about the last thing I expected him to do at age 66.

My family was strolling along Sixth Avenue on Thursday, and I stopped at the spot where once sat a Horn and Hardart Automat, the world’s biggest “vending machine.” Inside the restaurant was a giant wall covered with hundreds of small compartments, each with shiny glass doors.

Customers would put in coins, slide the door open and grab a serving of creamed spinach, Salisbury steak, meatloaf or homemade apple pie. At one time, the slots only took nickels. I’m not old enough to remember back that far.

Behind those little doors was a mammoth kitchen where men and women in starched white uniforms slid cherry cobbler into the oven and basted the huge turkeys to be roasted. If your favorite vegetable was not in its slot, you simply vocalized, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?” Before

you knew it, a hand appeared and placed the succulent side dish within your grasp.

In 2016, 14 people were killed by vending machines. I assumed it was from bad chicken salad, but apparently it was the machine falling on folks who had lost their temper and began shaking the behemoth.

Last week, I put a buck in a dispenser for a cup of coffee. I pressed extra cream and extra sugar. The piping hot beverage came bubbling out exactly as I had programmed it. The aroma of freshly brewed java wafted into my nose, but the precious liquid swirled down the drain hole. There was no cup.

Ain’t technology great? Now, machines even drink your coffee for you.

Horn and Hardart closed in 1991, selling many of their locations to Burger King. Occasionally, for old time’s sake, when I place my drive-thru order, I scream, “GOT ANY CREAMED SPINACH?”

Librarian combines passions

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Fitness instructor and librarian Connie McConnel finds it “fabulous” that she can blend her two favorite essentrics things when she brings the stretching program, Essentrics, to the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library this month.

“Working in the library and doing fitness are my two passions,” she said.

Essentrics was developed for pain relief by former ballerina Miranda EsmondeWhite, who hosts the PBS show “Classical Stretch.” She wrote the book, “Forever Painless,” available at the library.

When the book became a bestseller, McConnel wanted to learn more about the workout. She became certified for the first of four levels and incorporates the movements into the pilates and barre classes that she teaches in Brownsburg.

McConnell said the class is for people with chronic pain, mild pain and as preventative exercise.

“It’s very slow and smooth movements,” she said. “It’s moving in the right way to relieve that pain.”

The class is from noon to 2 p.m. July 13.

Pre-registration is required. If the class fills, McConnel might add a second class.

She plans to spend much of the class answering questions during the stretches, which require no equipment.

“The results make me feel a little taller, that my posture’s improved,” she said.

McConnel added she feels relief from her lower back pain but also enjoys the movements.

“The whole point of it is to stretch into a movement and try to strengthen the muscle from there,” she said.

Thanks to McConnel, the library has more than 300 fitness DVDs of all levels and types, many more than most libraries.

“I’m always so pleased to see we have such a great collection in comparison,” she said.

‘Rural Routes’: Zionsville artist portrays local landscapes

By Sara Baldwin • editorial@youarecurrent.com Driving between her home in Zionsville and her studio space in Thorntown, artist Erin Lawrance Salewicz passes by rolling pastures, tractors and farm aniprofile mals. The rural landscapes are the inspiration for her recent exhibit, “Rural Routes,” now showing at Sugar Creek Art Center in Thorntown through July 27.

“A lot of the things that inspire me are everyday and overlooked, like hand-painted signs I see on my commute,” Salewicz said.

Seeking out repetition and patterns, Salewicz Salewicz tends to paint the same farms and landscapes at different times of the day, or with seasonal foliage. She also creates mixed media pieces, including map-like aerial views of Indiana, working in vintage textiles and handmade doilies from local craft fairs and rummage sales.

At Sugar Creek Art Center, she is often tucked away in her studio space on the second floor of the former garment factory turned art gallery. There, she works on her own pieces and teaches seasonal classes for kids and adults. In her “Bandana Indiana” class, students make a mixed media Indiana painting using strips of bandana from the local Tractor Supply store. Her children frequently come along with her to the studio and have a small space of their own to create art.

Even as a child, Salewicz knew she wanted to become an artist. She studied studio arts, visual communications and

art education at Herron School of Art and Ball State University. From 2003 to 2006, she worked as a gallery assistant at Becky Fehsenfeld Gallery in downtown Zionsville. She then assisted at Susie Rachles Fine Art from 2006 to 2009.

Through those two experiences, Salewicz learned what it takes to run a gallery. She has since exhibited her work in numerous shows throughout the Midwest.

Salewicz also is inspired by the drive from Thorntown to nearby Colfax, where she sells handmade jewelry at Rockin K Boutique, owned by her friend Kayse Lenehan. Salewicz

said she has received a positive response there to her “functional art pieces.”

“Rural Routes” will be on display through July 27 at Sugar Creek Art Center, open to the public 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. There will be a second reception from 6 to 9 p.m. July 14 in conjunction with Sugar Creek’s “Culture of the Creek” art festival.

It’s that time of year again to grab your favorite film-buff pal and get to the annual Indy Film Fest. It’s one of my fafilm vorites because it has something for everyone and it’s one of the hottest festivals in town. The festival runs July 13 through July 22 at the Indianapolis

Recipe: Memphis-Style Dry Baby Back Ribs Recipe courtesy of Pitmaster Tuffy Stone Content and photo courtesy of Family Features Prep time: 10 minutes, plus 30 minutes stand time Cook time: 4-6 hours Servings: 2-4 Dry rub: • 1/4 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup kosher salt • 2 teaspoons chili powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard • 1 teaspoon black pepper • 1 teaspoon celery salt Ingredients: • 2 slabs Smithfield Fresh Pork Back Ribs, membrane removed • 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard • apple juice or water, in spray bottle • barbecue sauce (optional) To make dry rub: In small bowl about 30 minutes before grilling, combine brown sugar, kosher salt, chili powder, dry mustard, black pepper and celery salt; mix well Directions: Spread both sides of ribs with yellow mustard and sprinkle dry rub on top. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Heat charcoal or gas grill to 250 F

for indirect cooking.

Place ribs, meaty side up, over drip pan and cook 4-6 hours until tender. Spritz ribs occasionally with water or apple juice using spray bottle.

If using charcoal grill, add about 12 coals approximately every 45 minutes to maintain heat. Let ribs stand 10-15 minutes before serving. If desired, serve with barbecue sauce.

“There is an organization that promotes Indian classical music but culture there wasn’t an organization for Indian classical dance,” Jwala said. “Nritya means dance and priya means lover, so it’s just an organization to present classical traditional Indian dance.”

Nrityapriya Fine Arts will present Sri Rama Charitham, which is based on Ramayana, at 3:30 p.m. July 16 at Westfield High School’s auditorium, 18250 N. Jwala, 18, who will be a sophomore at Purdue majoring in speech and language and hearing sciences, graduated from Carmel High School in 2016.

Jwala has been dancing since she was 7 years old, learning from teacher Mangala Anand until she was 15.

“Then I got an opportunity to learn from teachers in Chennai, India, so I’ve been going every summer and winter,” Jwala said.

Yamuna: India’s sacred river Commentary by Don Knebel The Yamuna River is second only to the Ganges in spiritual importance to Indians.

Mathura, located on its banks about 90 miles southeast of Delhi, is travel one of India’s holiest cities.

The Yamuna River has its source in the Lower Himalayas and passes through Delhi and Agra, the home of the Taj Majal, before finally joining the sacred Ganges. For Hindus, the Yamuna River is the goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the sun god and the brother of Yama, the god of death. For thousands of years, Hindus have believed that bathing in the Yamuna River can save them from dying in agony. The Yamuna River has also long been associated with Krishna, the beloved god of love and compassion made popular in the West through the Hare Krishna movement of the late 20th century.

Hindus believe Krishna was the eighth avatar or manifestation of Vishnu, one of Hinduism’s three most important gods.

Krishna was born in Mathura, an ancient city along the Yamuna River. Krishna grew

up in nearby Vrindavan and is famous for his heroic exploits along the river. In one story, he drove away a multi-hooded snake that had poisoned the river and turned it black. Another time Krishna returned to Mathura, which his uncle Kansa had made the capital of an evil kingdom. After killing Kansa and freeing the people, Krishna rested alongside the Yamuna River before returning to Vrindavan.

Today, Mathura, with a population of about 600,000, is the home of a major temple honoring the birth of Krishna. It also is the home of 25 ghats, temples for worshipping Krishna and stepping down into the Yamuna River. Vishran Ghat, the most important, remembers where Krishna rested after killing Kansa and is the start and finish of a circumambulation of Mathura’s most holy places.
