BZA to consider impact of short-term rental in Village

Although Steven and Tamara Totty don’t serve food at Dolly Pines Cottage Apartment, the Town of Zionsville classifies it as a bed and breakfast because the homeowners also live on the property.

If the Tottys owned the home but lived elsewhere, they likely would not be violating the ordinance, according to Wayne DeLong, Zionsville director of planning and economic development. Having multiple families on a site designed for one can cause problems, he said.

“You now have two families with two different sets of demands and needs and expectations,” DeLong said. “If someone is living next door to a property they believed one family resided in that had one set of pets and one set of expectations and one set of schedules, and now you have two families that live there, all of a sudden you’ve doubled the impact.”

Attorney Mike Andreoli said he believes that Zionsville’s ordinance is dated and doesn’t take new technology into account. In addition to prohibiting bed and breakfasts, it also bans boarding houses, neither of which fit the Totty’s situation, he said.

“You’re talking about 1950s and 1960s terminology to try and deal with a process that is a modern Internet process,” Andreoli said. “(Internet bookings) weren’t even on the radar screen as much as 10 or 15 years ago, so our ordinances are out of date with the technology.”

Other homes in Zionsville are listed on Airbnb and other short-term rental sites, and they may be in violation of town ordinances, DeLong said, depending on several factors. Because of limited resources, the town only investigates when it receives a formal complaint.

“How do we discern if this is a property that is owner occupied that is being rented or if this is simply a rental property that is available and the owner lives in Carmel?” DeLong said. “All of a sudden you’re potentially taking on some discretion and challenging somebody when you don’t have a complaint to go on.”

The issue is not limited to Zionsville; municipalities across the nation are considering ordinances to deal with short-term rentals. Airbnb recently filed a lawsuit against the City of San Francisco — where it is based — for passing a law that requires hosts to register with the city.

On its website, Airbnb stresses the importance of learning local ordinances relating to short-term rentals before signing up as a host. It also states that its representatives are “working with governments around the world to clarify these rules so that everyone has a clear understanding of what the laws are.”

Zionsville officials surprised by road name change

By James Feichtner • james@youarecurrent.com County Road S. 700 E. will receive a new name this year, but while the road itself may be concrete, an agreement on what it will be called is not. transportation The road runs through Zionsville and Whitestown in Boone County, and leaders from those jurisdictions have been contemplating a new name for the road.

“We had been considering renaming Whitestown’s portion of the road since we moved into the present location of the Whitestown Municipal Complex,” Whitestown town council president Eric Miller said. The municipal complex is along CR S 700 E just north of Whitestown Parkway.

Zionsville became involved in discussions to rename the road when Mayor Tim Haak met with Miller to discuss it.

“Eric Miller and I had met earlier this year about renaming the entire stretch of road,” Haak said. “He and I had agreed to jointly rename the road, and then we would include the Zionsville West Middle School students in some fashion to hold a naming contest.”

On June 15, the renaming plan seemed to dissolve when Whitestown announced that its portion of the road would be renamed to Veterans Drive on July 1.

“Tim Haak and I had discussed a naming contest with a committee made up of only the Whitestown council president and the mayor of Zionsville, but Zionsville and some county officials decided to go in a different direction without including me in their correspondence,” Miller said. “Rather than risk letting this turn

into a political issue, we moved forward with this very positive plan to honor our veterans.”

Haak said Whitestown’s announcement caught him off guard.

“I was kind of surprised, because I thought we had the agreement in place to jointly work together to rename the road and involve the participation of the students, so I was a little disappointed that (Miller) renamed the road without prior notification to us or the county officials,” Haak said.

Despite Whitestown’s decision to rename the road, Haak said he likes the name but wished he would’ve known of the change sooner.

Miller said that he felt the new name was a great way to recognize local heroes.

“Naming a road in honor of veterans is a seemingly small but important step that Whitestown can take to honor veterans,” Miller said.

Haak said that he still plans to go through with his original plan to rename Zionsville’s portion of the road.

“The schools are still under the impression that we are going to work with them to rename the road, and I intend to honor the commitment that we made to the schools,” Haak said.

2 underage parties busted in 2 nights

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com For the second time in two nights, police broke up a party with underage drinking in Zionsville. public safety The Boone County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip at approximately 11:45 p.m. June 24 that people younger than 21 were consuming alcohol at a home in the 400 block of N. 1000 E. BCSO deputies and a Zionsville Police Dept. officer approached the residence and heard yelling and loud talking from the back patio.

Police detained all involved after some attempted to flee and arrested four 18-year-old adults who were charged as a minor in possession of alcohol. They were taken to the Boone County Jail.

“We will continue to be aggressive in fighting these underage drinking parties. We will make sure that the juveniles and anyone under the age of 21 are held accountable, as well as any adult that is furnishing the alcohol,” Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen stated. “I have seen the aftermath of these parties turn into tragedies many times over the course of my career. Research supports that alcohol is one of the gateway drugs to future escalating drug use in teens. This makes exposing this issue to our community even more important.”

Zionsville and Whitestown police officers found 17 underage people allegedly drinking at a party just before 1 a.m. June 24 in the 6900 block of Old Hunt Club Road.

Torch Run to aid Special Olympics

The Boone County Unified Torch Run is returning to raise funds for the Special Olympics, but this year there’s fundraiser a big difference.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com For three years, the Jameson Camp Women’s Auxiliary has been raising money to benefit youth during the summer and at the year-long Youth Leadergiving back ship Program.

Now, Leslie Concannon, co-president of the Women’s Auxiliary and a Zionsville resident, has another goal: to grow membership. Approximately 20 women are involved in the group, but Concannon said she hopes to raise the number to 50.

“We have monthly meetings and we support Jameson (Camp) when in January, we do Painting with a Twist, and the money we raise goes to the Youth Leadership Program,” Concannon said. “All the money the women raise supports the Youth Leadership Program.”

The Youth Leadership Program is for high school-aged students. Jameson Camp provides summer camp opportunities for kids who would not normally have the ability to attend camp.

“They are learning leadership, and we help pay for them to visit colleges. We help them on their next step of growing up,” Concannon said.

Obituary: Evonne Tate Langmeyer Evonne Tate Langmeyer, 45, of Zionsville died June 10. Evonne was born in Fort Wayne on April 20, 1971, to her parents, James Lee Langmeyer and Mona Lisa Langmeyer. Evonne was an owner of Take Us For Granite and also worked in insurance sales. She was a charter member and secretary of the Westfield Rotary Club. Evonne graduated from Carmel High School and was a student at Indiana University for four years. She modeled for Helen Wells Agency through junior high, high school and university.

I still have hope for America Commentary by Ward Degler I have hope for America. Not because of any politician or their political party. Not because of any government program plain talk or rhetoric. And not even because the nation’s crime rate seems to be ebbing.

I have hope for America because of what I saw last weekend as my wife and I drove through the southern half of our state. Both the rural areas and the small and mid-size towns we passed through lifted our spirits in ways I had almost forgotten.

In a fast-food restaurant, where we stopped for a sandwich and cup of coffee, we listened to a woman share the news of the week with an older couple, possibly her parents. My guess is they spend the week in a local nursing home and look forward to Sunday when their daughter takes them to church and springs for lunch afterward.

The daughter announced she had found four dollars worth of quarters in the sofa cushions. The mother laughed and remembered a time she thought she’d lost her egg money only to find it on the back porch.

Not only were the streets of most of the towns lined with American flags, so were many of the homes and virtually all of the businesses that lined the streets. Evidence that love of our nation and respect for the flag that represents it are alive and well.

We saw moms and dads laying out picnic

tables with the kids in local parks. On one small ball field, a bent but frisky grandfather picked up a bat and stepped up to the plate as his granddaughter wound up for the pitch. The rest of the family cheered from the sidelines.

In another town, we saw kids and adults picking up trash that had scattered along the sidewalk. We saw flags flying from truck mirrors, cars, boats and motorcycles.

Farm fields were green and lush in anticipation of a bountiful harvest, a reminder that America still feeds a good portion of the world.

Many old barns were in good repair and newly painted, proof that a lot of people are grateful and take care of what they have.

I have hope for America because a majority of Americans understand that freedom is never free and abundance is a gift to be nurtured and passed down to future generations.

It’s easy, I suppose, to look at blighted neighborhoods, crime, unemployment, homelessness and despair in some of our cities and consider it a harbinger of a failed system and an uncertain future.

But anyone who would take the time to drive through the farms and towns of our state and watch and listen to those who live, work and play there would know otherwise.

Scout builds shed for Boys & Girls Club

An Eagle Project is an opportunity for a Boy Scout to demonstrate leadership while performing a project for the benefit of his community. Thomas Burgess of Troop 804, chartered by American Legion Post 79 of Zionsville, decided to build a storage shed for the Boys and Girls Club of Zionsville West for his project. The Boys and Girls Club had no room on site to store the athletic equipment used by the kids, so it was using a location far away.

To accomplish the project, Thomas raised more than $4,000 for the storage shed, tools and building supplies through two grants from Boone REMC and United Way Youth as Resources and a letter-writing campaign to family and friends. During the building phase, Thomas was joined by more than 30 volunteers from Troop 804, University High School’s lacrosse team, family and friends who collectively worked more than 228 man hours.

Nancy Noel shares farm with students, nursing home residents

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The downy feathers of an emu, the warm nuzzle from a llama and the clucks and crows from a pair of roosters meld together to create a lovely experience for COVER STORY which sight is unnecessary.

Middle school students from the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired were the latest guests at Nancy Noel’s Zionsville farm, meeting her therapy animals that include a horse, an emu, two roosters, a dog, a pig and multiple llamas.

Noel, best known for her artwork, began Noel sharing her llamas with nursing homes and children’s hospitals more than 15 years ago.

“My llamas have always been therapy animals,” she said, although she doesn’t do anything exceptional to condition them.

“Honestly we love them, we pay attention to what they feel psychologically, what they need, we don’t confine them, we don’t punish,” Noel said. “They all just turn out like this.”

“When we pay attention to (what they want), then they’re just different animals,” she said. Sisters Jane Brown and Karen Elliott work with the llamas to acclimate them to people and social situations.

“It becomes natural,” said Noel’s office manager Kathy Pierle.

“It just seems to happen.”

As the 32 students exited the bus, they were greeted by a Great Dane named Degas, and Luna, a llama rescued by Noel more than a year ago after being abandoned by her mother.

Luna lives indoors and has learned a lot from “parental figure” Degas, according to Pierle. Cricket the emu, rescued by Noel a few months ago, also has attached herself to Degas, learning social skills and adapting to humans.

“My favorite so far is the rooster,” student Gordon Wilson

said. “It has more than one animal’s feature,” he said, noting the rooster seemed to have elements from a condor and turkey with the iridescence of a peacock’s tail.

Even while chatting with the students, Noel was continually scanning the area ensuring the comfort of her guests.

“She’s got her eye on everything right now,” Pierle said. “She makes sure kids are safe, animals are safe.”

“My responsibility is the children’s welfare, and then the animals’ welfare,” said Noel, observing two- and four-legged creatures interact.

Students learned about the animals’ diet and asked where the animals liked to be petted, whether the emu could fly and the ages of all of the animals.

Noel has invited organizations to her farm in the past, starting with Brooke’s Place.

“Nancy loves to open the farm to people that might not otherwise have the opportunity,” Pierle said.

“For a lot of these students, being blind and visually impaired, it’s a neat experience anytime they get to interact with animals and pet and smell and use all their senses,” said Josh Baxter, a middle school teacher at ISBVI. “It’s a great opportunity for them to get out and experience something they don’t encounter in a typical day,” he said. “It’s nice to see them smile and have a good time.”

Students from ISBVI have visited several times before, but this was the first opportunity for the younger students to attend. Baxter heard about the previous visits and thought it would be a great opportunity for his students.

With the animals roaming free, the children were able to rotate among them, spending as much or as little time as they’d like with each one.

“Dogs have been my favorite animal ever since I was little,” eighth-grader Sarah VanPatten said. The cancer survivor declared she’d found a new boyfriend in Great Dane Degas, finding many opportunities to pet him. “I want to take him home,” she said.

“All those little incidental things that they don’t get to learn in their school lives, in this outside type world,” said orientation and mobility instructor Kristen Pierski. “It’s important for them to know that these types of things exist, like an emu.”

Amidst a student’s tears that the time was at an end, many others bid farewell to their favorite animals.

“These kind of things always teach me, so I’m happy to do this,” Noel said.

Degas The leader of the pack, the 3-year-old Great Dane is trained as a service dog and has helped other animals learn to be social around humans. “I teach them at an early age to interact with each other naturally,” said Noel.

“I give them the feeling that’s it’s totally normal to be compatible with animals that normally wouldn’t be compatible with each other.”

Lollie (horse) The Drum horse weighs 2,000 pounds and stands 17-18 hands high but “she knows when the kids are here she acts a certain way,” said Noel.

Foggy “She changes her attitude as soon as children come around,” said Noel of her pig.

St. Bernadette “All are worthy of interacting with the kids but certain ones are chosen over others,” said Noel of the blind llama who is one of 12 llamas on the property.

Who’s least untrustworthy?

OK, we can’t help ourselves with respect to the upcoming presidential election. It’s no surprise the vitriol gets nastier by the day, and it’s going to get much, much worse. We tend to agree with recent comments made by well-known pollster Frank Lantz, who, commenting on the high negatives of both Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Donald Trump (R-Billions), said, “The candidate who proves they are less untrustworthy is the candidate that’s going to win.” So Trump’s “Crooked Hillary” label likely makes sense. She’s hitting back, of course, but Trump is smart in bringing up all the past Bill and Hillary scandals of the past, as most of us forget the details. While pundits have told us this election will be like no other, it does bring to mind the 1988 battle between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis (Remember him?). The Republicans knew it had a weak candidate in Bush, and the strategy was not to build up Bush but tear down Dukakis.

Mission accomplished. Perhaps this is what 2016 is all about: Whoever can launch more and effective punishing attacks on the other, wins. Trump has a great arsenal in Hillary being, well, Hillary, but we never underestimate the power of the Clinton machine. Either way, it will be a great spectator sport.

Fame: It’s going to live forever Commentary by Terry Anker It is a popular subject of our culture. We sing songs about it. We dedicate films and television shows to it. It seems that we even select our political leaders, in part, because of it. Fame. It is pursued and reviled in nearly equal measure. Yet, its allure is undeniable because of both the power it bestows and the very fact that it bends the rules of life to conform to those who wield it. There are no velvet ropes that cannot be moved or inconveniences that cannot be overcome. For those standing in the bright light of fame, as 1980s British rock-and-roll band Dire Straits memorialized in its anthem to fame – you get “money for nothin’ and chicks for free.”

We all want to be special. There is nothing innately wrong with the desire to have our peers take notice of our ability, appearance or agenda. It is good to feel loved. One might imagine it is good to have things go our way a bit more. But the reality distorting prin-

ciples of fame often become a dangerous and addictive state of affairs. Too quickly one can come to believe that privileges, once imagined to be special, are now to be expected. They consider a life without firstclass passage too difficult to be endured.

Can we become trapped by our own expectations? Surely. Can our understandable need to be important be tainted as we achieve the very thing that we are seeking?

Probably. Kardashians, political candidates and community organizers all use fame as a tool to open doors and meet objectives.

In fact, it is most impressive what can be achieved doing little more than manipulate fame. But, is being a V.I.P. enough? Is fame an end in itself? Somehow, I doubt it.

Recently we Wilsons had an interesting turn of events to which, in the broader context of parenting, I think humor many of you will relate.

My boy/girl twins are almost 15 and were set to make their Catholic confirmation last weekend. On the last day of their five-day preparation retreat, literally seven hours before the ceremony, I got a call from my son telling me he did not want to be Catholic.

He would not be making his confirmation that evening. My initial thought was, “But I ordered two cakes!”

He couldn’t explain his reasoning over the phone but assured me that this decision was not something he had taken lightly. I told him I was proud of him for choosing his own path, but hung up in tears. Had I done this? Had I been the one to turn him away from Catholicism, from my heritage? Or was he simply acting out a teenage rebellion, deciding this was easier than smoking pot? With no time to contemplate my maternal shortcomings – his sister was still going through after all – I continued making pasta salad for the post-mass party.

I did however text the relatives to let them know what had transpired and left the question of gift etiquette in their hands. When I picked him up prior to the mass, I heard his reasons. They were good. They were strong. And in that moment, I realized maybe I was actually a decent mom. I’d somehow taught my kid to stand up for his beliefs, whatever they are, and even if they aren’t the same as my own.

To my surprise (and his, I suspect), the family recognized this as a special moment, too. They rallied around my son in support of his decision, showering him with cards and cash anyway. In one particularly brilliant recovery, an aunt simply crossed out the word “confirmation” and wrote “cool new glasses.” Perfect.

Teens don’t always make the right call, which is why at cross country drop-off I love yelling “Make good choices!” But in this case, my son made the right one.

Georgia still on my mind Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My wife and I recently returned from a very relaxing vacation in Savannah, Ga. Life there seemed so serene that I began humor to wonder if I would have been better off in a career that didn’t include the nerve-racking deadline stresses of radio, TV and print media.

I once considered being a Walmart greeter.

It looked like such a low-stress job, but a friend told me that he saw their employment contract and it included a reference to being nice to people. Like I’d sign something like that?

Toll booth collector intrigued me. It gives you a chance to meet lots of people without running the risk of ever establishing a real relationship. When you think about it, if you are looking for real change in your life, this is the gig you want.

I went through a brief wannabe-lumberjack stage. You get to be outdoors and you can wear the same shirt every day. Although, do they have a formal Friday? It would be fun to come home and tell my wife, “I got the axe at work today,” and not have her burst into tears.

Based on our recent trip, I am now certain I should have been a tour guide.

First of all, you don’t really have to know anything, because no one will dispute it, and no one will remember what you say, anyway.

For example, our guide told us how Savannah was founded when the Pilgrims came over and … no, that’s not it. Actually, the Spanish missionaries arrived first … no, that doesn’t sound right. Did she say it was the Puritans who were looking for cranberries? Whatever.

I could have been an excellent tour bus driver, as well. I have no sense of direction, so there would be no disadvantage in my being geographically challenged. The people on the bus have no idea where they are going – that’s why they took a bus. They know nothing about the area, and that’s why they hired

a tour guide. So if I did get lost (that’s a sure thing), I could make up some outrageous story about how in this very isolated area, hundreds of miles from food, water and shelter, three Catholic nuns saved the city of Savannah from the Spanish war ships by staying awake 72 straight hours to man the lighthouse with only those dried cranberries to eat.

See? I told you I’d be good at this.

I couldn’t be this imprecise in my present work. My bosses at WISH-TV and my newspaper publishers have this thing about my being “factual.” The last 40 years would have been so much more pleasant without that accuracy monkey on my back.

I might miss being on TV if I change career tracks, but the lure of a microphone and a captive audience moving at 45 miles per hour would be tough for me to turn down.

And here’s the best part: I could tell the same jokes three times a day all year. And no one would know the difference.

Your guide to allergies Commentary by Gerald Mick, MD, IU Health Physicians Primary Care While our immune systems protect us from viruses and bacteria, they also can react — or overreact — to family medicine harmless materials which trigger allergic reactions. Nearly 20 percent of Americans have some type of allergy. And while seasonal allergies with symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and coughing are the most widely known allergies, many other substances, including foods, also can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Dust mites, pet dander, peanuts and seafood are other common allergens. People who are allergic to pet dander and dust can experience symptoms similar to seasonal allergies. They also may have red- or itchy-skin rashes or hives. Food allergies may cause a variety of symptoms, including stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Allergies to nuts and other substances, such as insect stings, may cause the most severe and potentially life-threatening reaction — anaphylaxis — which causes a drop in blood pressure, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness and shock. Individuals with severe allergies carry

epinephrine, a medication that stops severe allergic reactions. It comes in an auto-injector for quick and easy delivery.

It’s important to remember people can be allergic to anything. Medications, latex, metals, household cleaning chemicals and perfumes and dyes are other common culprits. Severity of the allergic reaction can differ greatly from person to person. In some cases, the reaction is quite noticeable; in others, it may be so mild it’s virtually overlooked.

If you think you have an allergy, see your primary-care doctor for an initial evaluation.

Depending on the circumstances, he or she may refer you to an allergist. There are a variety of tests, including simple blood tests, to help pinpoint allergies. Working closely with your doctor, most common allergy symptoms can be relieved with treatments that include oral antihistamines or regular allergy shots.

Grammy Award-winning artist Melissa Etheridge rocked the stage and halls of the Palladium four years ago. Where’s Amy was mesmerized by the return of Etheridge on June 21, when she belted out songs with her sweet, raspy voice and contagious energy and played to a packed house. Several guests and friends of The Center of the Performing Arts had the opportunity to attend a special VIP meet-and-greet before the concert and said it was the highlight of their evening. Etheridge released her latest album “This Is M.E.” in 2014, and fans loved listening to her sing the featured singles, “Take My Number,” “A Little Bit of Me,” and “Monster.”

Etheridge also brought down the house with her classic hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.” Every time I attend a concert at the Palladium, I leave feeling pumped, and my heart is full. Etheridge touched the hearts of her fans when she sang and dedicated her new song, “Pulse,” to the victims of the Orlando tragedy. It was beautifully written, and 100 percent of all download proceeds go to help those affected by the tragedy in Orlando. Hands down, Etheridge gave a superb concert, and I left with a smile on my face thinking about how fortunate we are to have The Center for the Performing Arts working hard to bring the best worldwide entertainment to Carmel. Carmel’s Jenn Kampmeier organized Rock the Cradle and Indy Family Fest, and now she has a new brainchild – the first mobile wine truck in the state. drinks She bought the bus last winter and began the rehab process in March.

“It took a good eight weeks to do it,” the self-titled “mompreneur” said. “There’s nothing else out there like it, so we were doing everything ourselves. We got the bus down to the bare bones and built it up again.”

The Vino Mobile, or Vinny, as Kampmeier fondly refers to it, has no seats and people can’t ride in the bus. The wine truck is completely mobile with a full bar, and it is available to be rented year-round.

“We always have five wines on there,” she said, adding that riesling, chardonnay, pinot grigio, pinot noir and a cabernet or cab blend are the most popular. “Indiana is a sweet state, and we love our moscato, love our riesling, so I’m going through that like hotcakes.”

The wine is purchased from Monarch Beverages, Coastal Wine and Spirits and Republic National Distributing Company.

Her first few customers include the Westfield City Market, and she has already been booked for weddings. She also has made an appearance at some summer concerts in West Clay, Avon, Noblesville and Fishers.

Glasses of wine cost between $6 and $8, depending on the wine.

Although Vinny has no seats and customers can’t ride the bus like some of the brew buses found around Indianapolis, Kampmeier said seats are on the agenda.

“Eventually, when we get done with 2016 and sit back, franchise is ultimately where I want to go with this,” she said. “We aren’t just a seasonal wine truck because we have a portable bar. We can take a custom bar anywhere, and (Vinny) is the transport. He’s the attention-getter.”

‘The Storyteller’ to film in Fishers

By Desiree Williams editorial@youarecurrent.com It’s not often that you can spot a film crew walking down 116th Street, but this summer will be a little different. A film movies crew will travel all around Fishers to shoot “The Storyteller.”

Joe and Nancy Crump, director and executive producer, chose Fishers as the location because it is their home. Both were nervous to ask companies if they could film in their area, but they said everyone has been extremely helpful.

“Everyone has been so nice and welcoming and excited and I think that really helps to boost the energy of the project that is very much a passion project,” said Rachel Noll, producer.

In their two years working together, Joe Crump and Noll have written two scripts together, the second being “The Storyteller.” The film chronicles the story of how the love of a young, charmed girl heals a family.

“We are exploring … what we believe and how that shapes us,” Noll said. “Ultimately it’s a story about family and about how this little girl brings a family that’s drifted apart back together.”

The film has attracted well-known actors including Broadway star James Snyder and

Constance Towers from “General Hospital,” among many others. Nancy said the script is to blame for high caliber talent joining the film.

“People are moved when they read it,” Nancy said. “There are different things in the script that touch (people) based on what their life experience has been.”

Filming for “The Storyteller” began on June 27. Joe Crump said he wants to send the film through the festival circuit starting in January, and said they hope to start submitting the film in September of this year.

‘Basement Ladies’ on stage

Likewise, Beef & Boards Dinner Theater will lock up one of its favorites, “Church Basement Ladies,” following its July 14-Aug. 21 run.

“We’re bringing back the original production,” said Patricia Rettig, director of marketing and media relations. “There are several in the series, and we’ve presented four of them, so it can get confusing. This is the show where it all started, which we first presented six years ago. And it will be the last time we present it for a while. It’s going back into our vault, to borrow Disney’s term.”

“Church Basement Ladies” is based on the best-selling book, “Growing Up Lutheran” by Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. The musical comedy is about the women who work in the church basement cooking meals for church functions. Four women do their best to organize food, stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, keep the pastor on due course and try to solve the problems of their changing rural Minnesota

Chariot Festival set for July 9

By Desiree Williams editorial@youarecurrent.com The Chariot Festival of Indianapolis is back for its second year and will offer food, entertainment and a traditional family fun Indian celebration. The event will start at 10 a.m.

July 9 at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana, 3350 N. German Church Rd., Indianapolis.

Ratha Yatra is the tale of the journey of three Hindu deities – Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra – from their temple to their aunt’s home on grand chariots.

The event originated in Puri, Odisha in India, but it has spread worldwide since 1967 with the first U.S. festival in San Francisco.

“Our event is not about any religion, thought or belief,” said Saswati Pandab, one of the festival organizers. “It about people coming together, getting to know each other, enjoying, dressing up and trying out something new.”

Pandab moved to Fishers in 2004 where she found a small group of people working to organize the event there. They couldn’t plan it all on their own, so they reached out to the Hindu Temple for help. Now, they have gained sponsors as well as more organizing members

Blueprint for Improvement: Creating functional space Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal was to create additional and more functional space with an updated look throughout the entire home.

1. A second story was added to include a master suite with sitting room, a cathedral ceiling, hardwood floors, laundry room and a balcony off the bedroom.

2. The kitchen received a remodel with new cabinets, countertops, lighting, hardware and appliances.

3. New windows were installed throughout.

4. Updated lighting, flooring and finishes throughout the home.

5. All roofing and siding was replaced, along with a fresh coat of paint to give the exterior an updated look.

Before Background info: This 1930s bungalow in Meridian-Kessler was a bachelor’s pad before the couple got married. The two-bedroom home was just not enough space for the newlyweds.

Talking politics Commentary by Jordan Fischer Good news for those of you out there in Grammar Land: the Grammar Guy is back from his hiatus and ready to grammar guy talk politics (sort of).

Generally, holding the position of Grammar Guy in as high esteem as I do, I try to stay above the fray. But now that election season has roared upon us with all its sound and fury, even I can’t resist a few steps on the campaign trail.

Don’t worry: We’re not going to be spellchecking campaign mailers or critiquing candidates on their subject-verb agreement. We’re going deeper. So grab your copy of Aristotle’s “Rhetoric” and prepare to talk about the art of persuasion.

If ethos, pathos and logos sound like characters from the Three Musketeers … then you’re surprisingly well-read for someone who’s not familiar with the modes of persuasion.

First put to page by Aristotle in the Fourth Century B.C., the modes of persuasion (ethos, pathos and logos) are how speakers appeal to their audiences. I’ll let the man himself do the introductions: “Of the modes of persuasion furnished by the spoken word there are three kinds. ... Persuasion is achieved by the speaker’s personal character when the speech was so spoken as to make us think him credible (Ethos). ...

Secondly, persuasion may come through the hearers, when the speech stirs their emotions

(Pathos). ... Thirdly, persuasion is effected through the speech itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of the persuasive arguments suitable to the case in question (Logos).”

Repackaging that for this century, ethos is an appeal to authority – specifically the speaker’s. It can come from expertise, from an elected position or just inherent goodness. The important thing is that the speaker has authority, and you should listen to him/her because of it.

Pathos is an appeal to emotion. If you’re a fan of the Simpsons, you’ll recognize pathos in Helen Lovejoy’s frequent, handwringing appeals for “somebody to please think of the children.” Won’t you?

Logos is the appeal to logic – and it’s often the least effective mode. If you’d like to understand why, consider that Airborne – the popular Vitamin C supplement – made its parent company $70 million between 2011 and 2012 – a full three years after the makers admitted in a $23 million class-action lawsuit that there was “no competent and reliable scientific evidence” to support its health claims. As of the writing of this article, a bottle of 75 Airborne gummies goes for $23.75 on Amazon.

The canals of Amsterdam Commentary by Don Knebel Since 2010, Amsterdam’s canal ring has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Since the 17th century, this unique travel transportation system has allowed visitors to the Netherlands’ capital to reach what is probably the city’s most famous attraction.

In the middle of the 13th century, Dutch fishermen established a trading village along the Amstel River in northwest Holland. The village became known as “Amsterdam” after a dam protecting the area from flooding. To protect against invaders, residents built a semi-circular moat around their village, extending south from the IJ, at the time a bay. In 1585, Amsterdam expanded beyond the moat and residents began using the moat, named the “Singel Canal,” for transporting themselves and their goods. In 1613, with its population continuing to grow from international trade, the city began building three additional canals in concentric semi-circular rings around the original moat, quadrupling the area of the city.

When completed, Amsterdam’s new canals were connected to each other and to the

Singel Canal by radially extending canals, enabling efficient water travel from any part of the city to another.

Amsterdam, with a population of more than 200,000 in 1800, was among the world’s largest and most prosperous cities, attracting people from all over the world. One of its most popular destinations, especially for visiting sailors, was an area inside the Singel Canal known as “De Wallen,” featuring drinking, gambling and prostitution.

Today, Amsterdam’s 165 canals, with a combined length of approximately 65 miles, are spanned by more than 1,200 bridges, three times as many as in Venice. Approximately 2,500 houseboats are moored along the canal banks, most serving as permanent residences.

Three million visitors a year board tour boats to traverse Amsterdam’s canal network, many ending their trip near De Wallen to explore Amsterdam’s still flourishing red-light district.
