Walmart property for sale

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The 22.74 acres owned by Walmart on Michigan Road is for sale with a price tag of $7.5 million. development “After careful consideration, we have decided not to pursue a store at that location,” Walmart spokesperson Anne Hatfield stated in an email. “The retail landscape has changed since we first proposed a store. We look forward to serving customers at our nearby locations.”

Steve Maines with ADM Commercial Properties in Muncie is the realtor representing several of Walmart’s properties, including this one. It was listed in early June.

There has been some interest in the property, according to Maines, although nothing significant.

The empty lot was the source of a legal battle between Walmart and the Town of Zionsville for 10 years, culminating a year ago when a Boone County Superior Court judge reversed the Zionsville Plan Commission’s 2008 decision to deny Walmart’s plans to build.

The battle began in 2006 when the plan commission initially denied the plans, citing that it did not have jurisdiction because one-third of the property is in Hamilton

County.

In 2008, Zionsville enacted a “big box” ordinance limiting the size of freestanding commercial buildings to 60,000 square feet.

Integrated centers are limited to 125,000 square feet without an approved variance.

Many residents have also spoken out about the proposed store, citing noise, increased crime and causing hardship for nearby small businesses.

Although the town did not have a comment on the property’s sale, officials stated in an email “anything wanting to locate there would have to comply with Town ordinances.”

The portion of the property in Boone County is zoned B-2 Commercial, and Zionsville’s Comprehensive Plan recommends commercial development for the site.

Quiz Bowl team takes title

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Community High School Quiz Bowl team finished in first place at the national competournament tition June 10-11 in Chicago.

The team competed against Minnesota’s Wayzata High School and won two out of the final three rounds.

“It’s a great feeling. For the seniors to have the last match be for the national title, that’s a pretty fulfilling feeling. It’s a good way to end a big part of our lives,” 2017 ZCHS graduate Spencer Bures said.

Co-coach Mike Fowler is equally proud of the team’s season.

“We had some really tough competition.

Probably the toughest school we compete against every year is Harrison High School in Lafayette,” said Fowler, who teaches chemistry at ZCHS. “They have a really strong Quiz Bowl program. They start at the middle school level. Most schools, like us, start only at the high school level.”

Laffoon awarded for 20 years

Along with working at Marsh, walking 5K races and caring for her rescue dog, Sarah Laffoon spends much achievement of her time working at Noah’s Ark Preschool in the education wing of Zionsville Presbyterian Church, where she was recently honored for 20 years of service.

“I enjoy being here and enjoy going to church,” she said. “I’ve been growing closer to the Lord, which is good.”

Laffoon is from Madisonville, Ky., but moved to Zionsville with her family when her dad got a job in town selling cars. She joined the church during her junior year of high school.

Laffoon, 45, has worked at Noah’s Ark since 1997. She cares for the 12- to 18-month-old children. She said she gets to hang out, play and watch over them.

Laffoon recently received an award for 20 years at Noah’s Ark during the 25th Anniversary Spring Singing Concert. Although she didn’t accept it in front of the crowd because she was caring for children in the church’s crying room, she said it’s wonder-

Man celebrates beating the odds

On June 30, 1999, Scott Lintner’s life changed forever. He was diagnosed with leukemia at age 37 and was told he wouldn’t live to his 50th concert birthday. Lintner turned 50 in 2012.

“As we got closer to my birthday in 2012, I thought, you know what, I’m going to have a big party to celebrate, because if I turn 50, I’m going to beat the odds of what they told me,” said Lintner, a Zionsville resident.

Lintner, now 55, created the INDYpendence Day Concert for Cancer as a way to celebrate survival with his family and friends, but it quickly turned into something bigger.

“Let’s try to do something where I can really give back, because there’s a tremendous number of people that really got me through and kept me alive, and there’s a lot of people in my situation that aren’t lucky enough or blessed enough to be able to financially get through it all and live,” Lintner said.

He founded The Lintner Foundation in 2013 as a way to raise and directly donate money to cancer patients and their fami-

lies. His nonprofit, in collaboration with Alt 103.3, will host the fifth annual INDYpendence Day Concert July 4 at the Pavilion at Pan Am Plaza in Indianapolis.

This year’s event features a free party before the concert from 3 to 10 p.m. on the plaza with local bands, games, kids areas, giveaways and more. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the main concert at the Pavilion.

Rock band 311 will headline along with New Politics and The Skints.

To date, the concert has raised more than $200,000. This year’s benefactors include the Franciscan Health Patient Fund and the Love Hope Strength Foundation.

Remembering my grandson Commentary by Ward Degler Many of the people who knew my grandson were there. The young man took his own life in April, and we plain talk held a memorial service last weekend at my daughter’s home in Missouri.

Like most funerals there were some somber moments. A lot of memories, too.

While he lived, Christopher had a penchant for doing things folks liked to remember.

Like his very first deer hunt when he fired but a single shot and bagged a 14-point buck. His wife’s grandfather claimed it was the biggest deer ever killed on his farm.

“Beginner’s luck,” he said with a smile.

His father had been a fireman, and Chris always wanted to fill those boots. He became a volunteer at the city fire department as soon as he was legally old enough.

More than once he came home smelling of smoke and grinning from ear to ear.

One of his friends recalled Chris sneaking out with him at night and getting away with it. His mother smiled and pretended not to have known.

When I would drive to Missouri for a visit I always stopped at McDonald’s for a sand-

wich and two apple pies. One of the pies always went to Chris. After the first few times, he would be standing at the door waiting with his hand out. I asked him once what would happen if I didn’t bring one for him. He looked at me as though that would be impossible. It probably was.

Chris struggled to get through school, and then amazed all of us by excelling at Army basic and secondary training. He was proud of being in the National Guard and happy being a father.

No one could ever say for certain what went wrong in Chris’s life. But it turned out to be more than he could bear. No one talked about that. It was just accepted. Mostly we shared fun memories. There were more than enough of those to go around.

At the end of the service someone asked if I would offer a prayer. I said a few words of thanks for being able to share Chris’s short life, and admitted how difficult it will be to live the rest of ours without him.

“I want to help them cover story preserve their stories,” he said. “A lot of their own families don’t even know. It’s a living history. It’s a chance to record something that is really significant in our nation’s history.”

May, 54, started as chaplain of Hoosier Village, a senior living community in Zionsville, in 2015, where the services are non-denominational. He has been serving different churches as a Lutheran pastor in the Indianapolis area since 1995. He was a chaplain in the Navy Reserve for 22 years from 1990 to 2012.

“When I retired, I wanted to stay somewhat connected to the military, so in

“I want to honor the veterans, educate the community and the next generation because today less than 1 percent of the population serves in the U.S. Armed Forces, so it’s not easily experienced,” May said. “In World War II, even if you didn’t serve, your neighbor or your uncle did.”

Many World War II veterans who served in combat weren’t ready to talk about it for a long time.

“There has been a lot more interest in their stories in the last 20 years than there was in the first 50,” May said of World War II vets. “Slowly, the vets have gotten to the point where they’re more willing to share. I think there is a therapeutic process. Sometimes you open up more to strangers than you do to your own family. There is a freedom to be honest.”

May said some of the most rewarding feedback comes from family members.

May was instrumental in starting a Veteran Garden at Hoosier Village in May. It honored living veterans from Hoosier Village as well as late spouses of residents.

Hoosier Village resident Ray McDonald, who turns 90 July 6, is appreciative of May’s contribution. He entered the service in October 1945, just after World War II ended. He served in the occupation forces in Japan in 1946 and 1947.

McDonald, who lives at Hoosier Village with his wife, Fro, started a Veterans Club when he moved to Hoosier Village from Fishers nearly five years ago.

“Ron was helpful with the Veterans Club, and then he spearheaded the Veteran Garden,” said McDonald, whose son, Bob, was the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs from 2014 to earlier this year. “I don’t know how we were so fortunate to get him here. He’s just done a super job. All the residents are pleased with the care he gives, whether they are ill or in the memory center. He has a big heart for everybody.”

Happy birthday, USA Commentary by Terry Anker For 241 years old, you look terrific. Sure, you are not as young as you used to be. The knees may creak a bit and you may not be quite as far ahead in the race as you once were. But in many ways, you are at the top of your game. Your economic might is renown. You’ve worked hard to educate and provide for your family – and helped with the lives of scores of others not able to do it themselves. Maybe you’d do a few things differently if you had it to do all over again, but mostly it is turning out OK. Still, times are changing. And despite occasional resistance, you are changing with them.

Life milestones cause us to pause and take stock. We think about our decisions.

We think about where we sit in relation to our hopes, dreams and, honestly, to our high school nemesis! Are we falling behind, keeping up, or surging ahead? Yet mostly, the anniversaries push us to consider the future – to adjust and course-correct. Anyone who has taken a trip or two around the sun will tell you that regret accomplishes little unless it guides us to pursue a new and better tact.

Although most agree that our own nation is no longer adolescent, it is impossible to know where we might be along the way.

Young family? Middle-age? Twilight? Even as pundits debate whether the nation is on or off track, we might ask ourselves the same questions. Are we at peace with our past? Do we have a plan to advance? Time only moves in one direction – forward.

Happy Birthday, USA. We hope it is a good one.

Oh, say can you see Commentary by Amy Sorrells At 29, Mary Young Pickersgill couldn’t have imagined the impact of the stitches she pulled through the stiff canvas fabric. She hadn’t been a widow long when she was commissioned with the overwhelming order from the United States armed forces, so she recruited help from her daughter, two nieces and two free women of color. Together, feverishly and late into the evenings, their eyes must have burned with the strain of working by candlelight.

Pickersgill couldn’t have known the 50-pound, 30-foot by 42-foot, 15-starred and 15-striped garrison flag would take nine men to raise over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, and that it would be the same flag Francis Scott Key saw flying the morning he wrote our national anthem.

She could not have known that flag would become the same flag waved by generations of little girls in sundresses, boys in baseball uniforms, troops in uniform and old men in seersucker pants all along the curbsides of American towns every July 4, or that it would be raised

high at Iwo Jima or above dusty hunks of jet fuel-seared concrete in New York City, or over a baseball field of congressmen in Virginia a couple of weeks ago.

The British aren’t threatening Fort McHenry, which is what prompted Major George Armistead to ask Mary Pickersgill to make the biggest flag she could in 1812. And yet we are living in the midst of ominous, irresponsible rhetoric threatening our way of life.

In a letter to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776, John Adams said of Independence Day, “I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States…Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means…”

As we look to the flag this year, may each of us realize anew how every stitch we sew makes a difference.

Well, friends, it’s official. My transformation to Dance Mom, capital D, capital M, is finally complete. I am currently humor crying alone in a Midwest hotel room over my daughter’s jazz solo score. As I sit on the floor in between the beds, I am actually cursing the judges and blaspheming sweet baby Jesus because my precious little angel didn’t receive higher marks. I mean, seriously.

I’m not the 13-year-old here. What is wrong with me?

I’ll tell you what’s wrong. I’ve gotten sucked into this racket, hook, line and sinker. I’ve somehow come to accept the opinions of three strangers as truth, as the only legitimate evaluation of my child’s abilities. I’ve forgotten that this is but one day, one stage, one dance among probably hundreds of performances these judges will see. And more importantly, I’ve forgotten that instead of breaking out my mama bear claws and plotting revenge, I should be focusing on why I allow my daughter to compete in the first place – for fun!

Although I’ve been able to explain the difference between contemporary jazz and lyrical jazz for some time now (contemporary is sad and/or angry while lyrical is happy and joyful. Duh!), and I do admit to buying hairnets and false eyelashes in bulk, I’ve always labeled myself a “dance mom,” lower case with quotations. I mocked those silly mothers who clearly are living vicariously through their children and plastic adjudication trophies, who become so wrapped up in the dance world that they forget this is about the kids, not them.

Hypocrisy noted. And though I vow to stave off all future hotel hysterics, I fear my journey to the Dark Side is complete. I’m a Dance Mom. Peace out.

My home office is downstairs, which was just a cellar when we moved into the house in the ’90s. humor We invested a little money to fix it up, so then it became a basement. I guess you could call it a finished basement. But apparently it wasn’t finished, because the builder we hired said that for a few extra bucks he could add some decorative touches and then we could call it our lower level. We didn’t have “that” kind of money.

Our original plan was to make it a beautiful room where we could entertain guests and sip white wine as we talked about good books and the current movie scene. Fifteen years later, no humans are allowed downstairs except me and the men from Orkin.

We have a pool table that I bought in l998 when I wanted to get my son interested in something other than video games.

He started playing video games of people playing pool.

I use the cue sticks to wrangle cobwebs from the ceiling. I can store our suitcases underneath, and the tabletop is the perfect

nesting area for a year’s supply of Bush’s Baked Beans. My wife said we’d never use the pool table. Geesh, what a pessimist!

Somewhere under boxes of paperback books and musty blankets is a futon. The cat sees the unit as a condo — two beds and a bath, if you know what I mean.

In 2000, I decided to learn to play the piano, so I set up an electronic gizmo called a clavinova downstairs. It can be programmed to mimic 30 different instruments, create background rhythms and magically produce chords. I only had to sit there and make each next payment.

We built a bar in the corner so guests could grab a cold one without climbing the stairs. But we never put in a fridge, as we planned. Behind the bar is our new sump pump. We’ll install it any year now.

I just told Mary Ellen it was time we invited some friends over to play pool.

But first, I have a whole lot of beans to eat.

Prep time: 15 minutes, plus marinade time Cook time: 15-20 minutes Servings: 4 Ingredients: • 1 Smithfield Fresh Pork Tenderloin • 1/2 cup agave nectar • 2 tablespoons Sriracha sauce • 1 teaspoon minced garlic • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar • pint fresh pineapple chunks • wood skewers, soaked in water Directions: Trim skin off pork tenderloin and cut into 1-inch cubes. To make marinade: In bowl, combine agave, Sriracha sauce, garlic, soy sauce and rice vinegar, and whisk thoroughly. Pour marinade into re-sealable bag and add cubed pork tenderloin. Marinate for up to 24 hours in refrigerator. Place tenderloin and pineapple chunks on skewers, alternating so pineapple is tight against tenderloin. Heat charcoal or gas grill to medium heat. Grill skewers, turning every 5 minutes, until all sides are grilled. Cook until tenderloin chunks have reached internal temperature of 145 F.

Four Zionsville residents named Songbook finalists

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Grace Tucker is eager to share her passion for the Great American Songbook with music other students from around the nation.

“As most of my musical experience comes from theater, I usually really only perform Tucker with kids from central Indy, and I am so grateful that Songbook has given me the chance to meet vocalists from New York, California and everywhere in between,” said Tucker, Clark who will be a Zionsville Community High School junior in August.

Tucker is one of three ZCHS students selected as one of the 40 Songbook finalists. The finalists will participate during the intensive instructional program July 15 to 22 at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, the headquarters of the Songbook Foundation.

The week concludes with a concert at The Palladium July 22. Ten finalists will vie for the title of Songbook Ambassador.

The other ZCHS students are Cynthia Kauffman, who will be a junior, and Hayden Elefante, who will be a sophomore. Weston Clark, a Zionsville resident who graduated from Park Tudor School this spring, also is a finalist.

“The thing that I am most looking

forward to during the week of the Great American Songbook Competition is the fact that I will be singing and doing workshops with professionals, as well as meeting teenagers from all across the country,” Kauffman said. “I am so excited to get to know people who have the same passion that I do. I am sure that this will be such a great experience and a week I Elefante will never forget. Also knowing two people from Zionsville will be very comforting.”

Tucker was surprised she made it. She had been focused on finding summer jobs Kauffman and auditioning for summer productions.

“The night I found out I was accepted, everything kind of came to a stop as I realized that this experience was actually going to happen,” Tucker said.

“I was completely awestruck.”

Elefante is eager to receive constructive criticism from the workshops.

“I’m really hoping that they are able to help me improve my vocal technique as well as song interpretation,” Elefante said. “I’m ready to step outside my comfort zone and learn everything I can from my coaches for the week.”

Clark, who plans to major in vocal performance at Oberlin College, is eager to share his passion “I’ve never been around a group of people who appreciated this type of music as much as I do,” Clark said.

Opera director preps for season

“I think it’s a very attractive schedule because we are just finding a little bit of a stride in being in multiple venues, having some diversity to our Starkey programing,” Starkey said. “‘La Traviata’ being done at The Tarkington is only the second time we will have been there as a company. So it’s still new but at the same time it’s not completely unfamiliar.”

The Indianapolis Opera opens the season with the classic Italian opera “La Traviata” Nov. 17 to 19 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The second show, “South Pacific,” is at the Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University March 22 to 25, 2018.

Blueprint for Improvement: Timeless Meridian-Kessler kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal was to design a more functional and timelessly designed kitchen the owners could enjoy for many years to come!

1. The protruding peninsula was removed, shifting the main cooking area to the former microwave/oven location.

2. The kitchen was gutted to allow opportunity for taller cabinets, new countertops and a beautiful navy blue tile backsplash as a pop of color.

3. New wood-look tile flooring was installed as a durable solution for their canines. Another important design step was analyzing the lighting to create the best solution for both ambient and task lighting.

4. In the adjacent rooms, new bench seating in the dining space and new mudroom cabinets were designed, allowing the spaces to naturally flow from one to the next, while adding valuable functionality.

The owners were prepared to make these improvements when they recently bought the home, so they were very excited about getting the design process started!

Washington’s National Cathedral Commentary by Don Knebel The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is a stunning example of Gothic architecture, American-style. Its popular name, the National Cathedral, travel is a little misleading.

In 1791, when Pierre L’Enfant laid out what became Washington, D.C., he reserved Lot D for “a great church for national purposes.” Because of concerns about church/state separation, nothing came of the idea, and Lot D became the location of the National Portrait Museum. Nonetheless, the dream of a national church persisted.

In 1893, President Benjamin Harrison signed a Congressional charter authorizing the Protestant Episcopal Church Foundation to establish a cathedral, the seat of the Bishop, within the District of Columbia. On Sept.

29, 1907, following an address by President Theodore Roosevelt, workers began construction on a 57-acre site atop Mount Saint Alban, named for the first British Christian martyr and the highest point in the city. The cathedral was completed 83 years to the day later, when it was dedicated by President George H.W. Bush.

Erected primarily from Indiana limestone, the National Cathedral is the sixth-largest cathedral in the world, featuring 234-foot twin towers at the western end and a 301-foot tower near the center. The design, inspired by the great cathedrals of Europe, incorporates flying buttresses, a magnificent rose window and 112 gargoyles. The cathedral’s 215 stained-glass windows portray religious and historical events, with a window honoring space flight incorporating a piece of lunar rock. One of its limestone grotesques represents the head of Darth Vader.

The National Cathedral has held state funerals for three U.S. Presidents and is the final resting place for more than 220 Americans, including Woodrow Wilson and Helen Keller. Although Congress has designated it the National House of Prayer, the National Cathedral receives no ongoing government funding.
