Compiled by Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Lions Club has sponsored Zionsville’s Fourth of July celebration since 1979. All funding is raised by the Lions Club and their INDEPENDENCE DAY partners.

“We get upwards of 10,000 people (at the event),” celebration chairman Steve Gayheart said. “The people of Zionsville have always made this a great event. It seems to grow each year.”

The Lions Club organizes a Fourth of July raffle in conjunction with Akard True Value Hardware. The winner has the choice between $500 cash or a Weber Genesis grill provided by Akard True Value. Raffle tickets will be sold near the gazebo. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Akard True Value or from any Lions Club member.

Traditionally, people begin arriving at the park early in the day to claim their firework-watching spots by setting down blankets or lawn chairs.

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com A documentary film for a class project for the National History Day contest by two Zionsville Middle School CULTURE students recently received national attention.

The film by Annadel Benedict and Iris Jordan was chosen, along with 49 other student documentaries, to be shown at the Oprah Winfrey Theater at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. The documentary, “RFK in Indianapolis: Subverting Conflict with Compassion”, focuses on Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s speech in Indianapolis after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. “The speech was credited for preventing Indianapolis from rioting, as many cities did at that time,” said Bethany Hrachovec, coordinator of Learning and National History Day in Indiana. “Their documentary explores the social climate of Indianapolis at the time of MLK Jr.’s assassination and the role RFK played in that.”

The students chose Kennedy’s Apri 4, 1968 speech because it’s an often overlooked part of history. He was seeking the Democratic nomination for president at the time.

The 10-minute film took the two lifelong friends two months to make and was shot entirely on an iPad with iMovies.

The pair traveled to Washington, D.C. June 13 to see their documentary on the big screen.

“We got a private tour before the museum opened,” Benedict said.

Camp Invention fosters growth

By Ben Traylor news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Community Schools students entering kindergarten through sixth grade, and students from TECHNOLOGY the surrounding area, recently had the opportunity to join a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) summer camp at ZCHS. The program, called Camp Invention, was held June 11 through June 15 at the ZCS Freshman Center. “(Camp Invention) is a totally hands-on environment that encourages creativity,” said Darren Hale, Zionsville Camp Invention director. “Students get to work with peers and learn about new concepts. Most of them are fascinated with being able to take apart and build new things with (materials) they’ve brought in. It certainly stimulates and fosters imagination.”

Concepts taught during Camp Invention are regulated by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The organization, based in Alexandria, Va., oversees all programs at Camp Invention sites and ensures a consistent and seamless curriculum.

based in its curriculum,” Hale said. “It really doesn’t compare to any other summer camp for students.”

Hale said the combination of team work and inventing creates a unique experience that they will take with them in the future.

Local rowers compete at nationals

Two Zionsville rowers competed in the USRowing Youth National Championships in California, June 8 to 10.

SPORTS Elizabeth Penola, a 2018 Zionsville Community High School graduate, and Elijah Lang, who will be a junior at ZCHS, had impressive performances.

Penola and Lang qualified at the Midwest Regatta in May and placed in the top three in their events.

Penola and her teammate finished seventh and 20th in their two races while Lang’s team finished 20th in its first race and fourth in its second, narrowly missing the opportunity to move to the final round.

Lang is a sculler, meaning each rower uses two oars. He rowed with three other teammates from different schools in Indianapolis.

Penola qualified in pair sweep rowing, where each rower operates one oar.

Penola and Lang typically practice twice a day, up to six times a week, at Eagle Creek Reservoir through the Indianapolis Rowing Center.

Lang embraces the national recognition for IRC’s smaller club competing against larger clubs from the east and west coasts.

Elijah and his teammates have their sights set on training hard for next year’s national competition. “With us all coming back and rowing the same boat,” he said, “we would like to medal next year.”

The volunteers at Soup’s On food ministry at Roberts Park United Methodist Church in Indianapolis were a blur of motion for about two hours as they fought hunger serving free meals.

The Roberts Park church began serving a sunday lunch about 20 years ago. Since then the ministry has served nearly 150,000 meals, which translates to about 250 per week.

The Roberts Park church works in concert with other local Methodist churches to staff the soup kitchen on Sundays. Approximately four times a year, the Zionsville United Methodist Church staffs the ministry.

The work proceeds in two phases. First, a group of volunteers that often includes families with younger kids works on an assembly line to make sack dinners to be handed out at lunch so that people have food for the evening as well. These include peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and healthy snacks. That work is done in Zionsville.

The second group goes down to the Roberts Park church to serve the lunch, doing essentially everything but cooking the food.

The church has a professional chef for that.

A group of approximately 18 volunteers serves the roughly 250 meals and then washes the silverware and plates.

The customers love the tasty, hot meal on chinaware. There are breads and desserts donated by local restaurants. The church works hard to convey love to its neighbors.

Renowned artist exhibits in Zionsville gallery

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Work by Blend Cota, creative director for the Thomas Kinkade Studios, is on exhibit at the Thomas Kinkade Zionsville GalART lery through July 7. The painter visited the gallery in mid-June to sign paintings he produced for Kinkade Studios as well as his own label.

“We had a constant stream of visitors, almost difficult for him to take a break to get something to eat, despite the heat,” gallery owner Barbara Jennings said. “Blend is vivacious, dynamic and engaging.”

The gallery was one of the first to host Cota and introduce his style of art to the market. The artist uses the same techniques in his work as the late-Thomas Kinkade that give a sense of light radiating through a picture. “(Kincaid) dreamed of not only leaving a legacy, but continuing the legacy of ‘sharing the light,’” Jennings said. “Because of this, he mentored artists and conducted a modern-day atelier - a throwback to the days of the old masters who would take on apprentices to assist in the creation of the masterpiece while teaching them the craft.”

Cota’s work under his own name is very different from the style he paints for the Thomas Kinkade Studios, Jennings said.

“Blend’s vibrant paintings are his expression of freedom. When left to his own devices, Blend likes to ‘throw’ paint onto the canvas,” Jennings said. “What makes Blend

unique is his ability to copy anyone’s style in intricate detail yet flourish in his own style.”

The exhibit features about a dozen paintings in Blend’s style and at least another dozen in the Kinkade style. Most of the Kinkade-style paintings will continue to be on display while most of the superheroes

and Cota’s style “Color Collection” will travel to California July 8 for his next exhibit.

All the paintings are for sale, from one large original at $30,000 to a variety of reproductions. Limited editions range from $750 to $2,200, while smaller open editions are $39.95 to $89.

Maplelawn Farmstead hosts Sunshine Market

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Vendors and shoppers came out to enjoy a day on the farm during Maplelawn Farmstead’s second anSHOPPING nual Sunshine Market June 23 in Zionsville.

Maplelawn, 9575 Whitestown Rd., features 3.9 acres of 175-year-old barns, livestock enclosures and a home. Since becoming a nonprofit in 2005, Maplelawn’s mission is to preserve and restore the property in order to educate the public about farming during the Great Depression era.

Sunshine Market offers a chance for guests to visit the farm while shopping for antiques, crafts, clothes, food and drinks.

Chrissie Stacy, organizer of Sunshine Market and a Maplelawn volunteer, said she and her mother-in-law came up with the idea.

“We’ve always just thought it would be fun to have a vintage market out here,” she said. “It started with some donations to the farmstead of things we couldn’t use, but the families wanted us to be able to use them or sell them.”

event for the community to shop local.

“I just like the community involvement, getting to see everyone come out,” she said. “We recognize a lot of faces and a lot of people become volunteers at Maplelawn because of this event.”

Vendors grew from 25 in 2017, the inaugural year, to 40 this year. Stacy said she wants to continue growing the market to include a brewery, food trucks and more demonstration crafts.

Calligraphy Basics: Calligraphy does not require a big investment in equipment or tools. These basic tools will get an artist started with lettering.

Calligraphy Guild of Indiana finds home in Zionsville

These are all places where one might find the art of calligraphy on display.

COVER STORY Simply put, calligraphy is an art form related to writing, particularly the styling of letters. Calligraphy letters are painstakingly rendered using brushes or metal-tipped pens called nibs, a process which Julia Thompson, president of the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana, describes as “forming letters of quality.”

The Calligraphy Guild of Indiana formed Thompson nearly 40 years ago, in 1981, when Master Scribe Donald Jackson of England gave a lecture at the University of Indianapolis. The university’s Art Department called the group “The Alcuin Society” in honor of the ancient English scholar and calligrapher, Alcuin of York. Eventually, the group began meeting off campus in Indianapolis.

During the past year, however, the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana found a new home in Zionsville.

“We used to meet on Lafayette Road at Bate’s Art Supplies. The store shut down, so then we started meeting at an apartment complex’s café in Nora,” Thompson said. “We needed a meeting space. We were hunting high and low, across the whole Indy metro area, but it helped that I was from Zionsville.”

The guild now meets at Zionsville Town Hall and the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville.

“This all just came together within the last year,” Thompson said.

as Yves Leterme of Belgium, sometimes teach at the workshops, allowing members to receive rare instruction from masters of the craft.

“We send out a supply list so that people know what to bring,” Thompson said of the workshops. “If new members or visitors come, we have extras so we can share with everyone. Then we have a session where either someone is demonstrating or we are all doing something together.

We’ve done different styles, which are called ‘hands’ in calligraphy. At the last meeting, we painted on rocks, which is something that nobody had ever tried.”

Like many guild members, Indianapolis resident Kathy LaPorte was drawn to the guild because of her lifelong love of calligraphy and her desire to learn more.

“All my life, penmanship and paper have been intriguing to me,” LaPorte said. “Even in elementary school, I loved to write and I loved the attraction that I had for different kinds of papers. I can’t remember exactly how I came across the info that there was a guild, but once I did I signed up and I’ve belonged ever since, and that was about 30 years ago.”

LaPorte has since held several leadership positions within the guild. She is currently the membership chairperson.

For LaPorte and other members, the Calligraphy Guild of Indiana is about more than improving their artwork. It’s about forging a sense of community where artists can share their passion for calligraphy with one another.

“Three or four times a year, we sponsor an out-of-town calligrapher to come in and give workshops. There are also classes all over the country that we can attend,” LaPorte said. “There are a lot of different styles of lettering that we learn, but it’s the people I’ve met that have been truly special. We share a love of handmade letters and beautiful handmade work.

“I enjoy the camaraderie of the people that have the same interests that I have. There’s a narrow field of people who are intrigued with beautiful letters and letterforms, and it’s educational and enjoyable to get together.”

Ink: There are many inks used for calligraphy, from pigment-based to water-based. Inks based in water contain color as chemically dissolved dye. They are thinner, usually not waterproof or lightfast, and dry with a more transparent look. When the work needs to last for many years, pigment-based ink is typically used. A small reservoir is required to hold the ink.

Pens, Pen Holders and Nibs: The classic calligraphy tool is a “dip pen” or wooden pen holder with cork finger grip, with interchangeable metal nibs. Nibs come in a variety of sizes and shapes, allowing for diversity in style. Generally, dip pens have no ink reservoir, so the user must recharge the ink from an ink bowl or bottle.

Paper: On some papers, ink can spread and bleed, which is typically one of the first challenges calligraphy students will encounter. On the best papers, the ink will pool but not bleed. Many artists use 90-lb paper or watercolor paper pads.

Ruler: Although graph paper is great for practicing letter forms, calligraphy artists eventually move on to heavier-weight papers. Artists use a ruler to draw lettering guidelines before starting their work.

Pencil: An ordinary mechanical pencil is fine for drawing guidelines as long as the lead is not too soft, which creates smudging.

Clichés are among the most difficult of the English language peculiarities to master.

These overused, if not hackneyed, phrases aim to communicate some truism and convey a far more complicated idea quickly and approachably. For example: Don’t cry over spilled milk. On its face, the expression reminds us to reserve our deep emotion for deserving occasions. Perhaps we could complete the adage this way: Don’t cry over spilled milk, unless you’ve spilled it on your expensive, new silk curtains.

Still, the shorthand of the bromides often are worthy of our consideration, such as: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

True. We’ve each heard the old saying hundreds of times. So many times, in fact, that we’ve stopped taking note. Yet, a listener new to the language would pause and consider the words. The chain – a continuous run of interconnected metal circles. Each touches the other at a single point. Yet, combined they have remarkable strength and resilience. It has dropped anchor, lifted cargo, pulled stumps and carried the pendant around our necks – each in nearly identical configuration.

So, how can such a simple, even humble, loop have done so much? And, could we form a few intentional and powerful connections with those around us? Among the many failed promises of the electronic age is that human interactions could be replaced by virtual ones. Certainly, social media amplifies the voices of a few. Still, would we be better served by a handful of real, in-person relationships with other flesh-and-blood humans? Linked together, what can we hope to accomplish?

My children are constantly shoving things in my face to read. A test they did well on, a math problem they need help with, a permission slip they’re too afraid HUMOR to forge. And my response now, regardless of content, is almost always, “Wait. I need my glasses.”

Nooooo!

Long gone are the days when I could focus simply by holding the paper out a little farther. If I don’t have my plus-1 tortoise shell readers on, fuhgeddaboudit. I’m blind as the proverbial bat. Distance is still fine, but anything within a foot is a headacheinducing blur. What’s frustrating is that I’ve always had perfect vision. In fact, I’ve spent the last 30 years obnoxiously teasing everyone else about not being able to see as well as I. Karma’s stupid.

So, I’m embracing my subpar sight. I’ve purchased multiple pairs of glasses and positioned them strategically around the house. I’ve resorted to borrowing the largeprint books from the library and am shopping for one of those gizmos that holds eyewear around the neck, which Doo is telling me are called Croakies (clearly, a derivative of the verb croak, meaning I’m aging quickly and will soon die). Yes, I can pull off the “headband look,” but not when I already have knock-off aviators sitting up there. It’s redundant.

On the positive side, my teacher street cred is about to increase exponentially.

Imagine me, peering down at a student over glasses attached to a bedazzled Bungee cord. Sure, it’s a bit spinster-librarian, but it screams, “I’m smart! Listen to me!”

I’ll end here. My oldest needs something to be signed. Now, where are my glasses?

What’s good for the goose Commentary by Ward Degler Of all the birds I’ve seen, I hold the greatest respect for geese. I didn’t say I liked them, only that PLAIN TALK I respect them. That’s because they are cunning, powerful, aggressive and territorial to the max.

They also go insane when anyone challenges their right to whatever they think they have a right to. This renders them capable of unspeakable damage to people, pets and property.

In 2001, Workers’ Comp paid $17,000 to a man for injuries he got from a goose while making a delivery. In Buffalo, N.Y., a bunch of berserk geese caused $2 million in damages.

Such capability of mayhem also makes geese excellent watch dogs. People knew this in ancient Rome. It was a flock of geese that warned the Romans of invading Gauls.

Since then, they have been put to work on farms, factories and military compounds.

The United States Air Defense Command installations in Germany were guarded by patrolling geese. The Ballantine Distillery in Scotland kept the brewing vats safe with geese.

Back when I was a farmer, I bought a half-dozen newly hatched African geese from a neighbor. After a few days of feeding them, watering them and herding them

into shelter at night, they looked at me as some kind of parental figure. They would follow me around the yard and would rush to greet me when I got home from work.

I thought this was charming until one Saturday when some friends came to visit. As I left the house to meet them, the geese formed a defensive line between me and my friends, refusing to let them move. I don’t remember how I persuaded the geese that the visitors were OK, but I recall the incident was the primary topic of conversation that day and long into the future, and not in a good way.

As disturbing as it was to see friendship sullied by farm animals, it was a delight to note how quickly traveling salesmen returned to their cars and left the premises when confronted by indignant geese. During the summer, my loyal watchmen drove off tinkers, knife sharpeners and insurance agents.

All good things must end, of course, and when fall came and it was time to butcher the chickens, we added six African geese to the list of items in the freezer. We made a point to invite our friends to dinner.

Sweeping conversation Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The other day I received something interesting in the mail.

Dear Mr. Wolfsie, HUMOR Thank you for buying a new Oreck. We hope you enjoy many years of vacuuming pleasure. Please call us about hosting an Oreck party today.

I don’t intend to spend a single enjoyable moment with my vacuum. I have always felt there is something very frightening about vacuum cleaners. Every dog I have ever owned agrees.

I have no recollection of a similar followup after the Wolfsies bought our new sump pump. And no one cared a whit whether I had a positive experience with our document shredder. I recently had some issues with my Internet connection. The cable company called me the next day to ask if I would rate the service I was provided.

“I would be happy to do that,” I told the caller, “provided someone finally shows up.”

About that Oreck get-together: I’d be stuck for snappy conversation while guests clustered around the artichoke dip. I took a speech class in college and once spoke off-the-cuff for 15 minutes on the topic,

“Life Before Rubber Bands.” Nevertheless, chatting with 20 people who share similar cleaning devices was daunting.

“So, Dick, I understand you and your wife have a new Oreck. Enlighten the group with some of your favorite moments.”

“It’s hard to pick our favorites. The night the bag of Fritos fell on the rug was unforgettable. We loved it last week when the cat shredded the down pillow. But Mary Ellen has a special place in her heart for Christmas Eve when the tree toppled over and pine needles were all over the living room floor.”

I think Mary Ellen and I will take a pass on having an Oreck party. We don’t want to sit around while our friends share their dirty little secrets. And we still have feelings for our first vacuum cleaner. It was tough saying goodbye to Kirby after 25 years. He was the product of a bygone era.

Until the day Kirby died, he pretty much remained in the closet.

CONCERT Styx is headlining a tour with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Tesla at 7 p.m. July 11 at the Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center in Noblesville.

“The tour is exceeding expectations, although we did have high expectations for it,” Gowan said. “We’ve toured with Tesla in the past and we’re devoted followers of (that band). Joan Jett is the new factor and new part of the recipe. I love playing with her band because it’s such a visceral rock thing and everyone knows the words to so many of her songs. It’s amazing. I thought I only knew one or two songs. I actually know about 10. You discover that when you watch her show. It’s a completely well-outfitted rock machine she brings with her on the road.

“Then, of course, it’s the Styx extravaganza that we continue to elevate each year.”

Styx is touring in support of “The Mission,” which was released in June 2017 and is the band’s first new studio album in 14 years.

“It’s been on Billboard’s classic rock

charts for almost an entire year,” Gowan said. “We love seeing the young people out there wearing their ‘Mission’ T-shirt and jumping up when we play ‘Radio Silence.’

It validates we made the right record for this chapter of our career.”

Drawing much attention to Styx is playing “Mr. Roboto,” which was part of the 1983 “Kilroy Was Here” album, which hasn’t been performed on tour for years.

Following the rock opera concept album and tour, Tommy Shaw left the band to pursue a solo career. Soon after, the band broke up.

The band reformed in 1990 without Shaw but with then-primary lead vocalist Dennis DeYoung, who left in 1992. Shaw and DeYoung returned to Styx in 1995, but the band decided to replace DeYoung with Gowan in 1999 when DeYoung couldn’t tour because of health issues. James “JY” Young and Shaw had long disagreed with DeYoung about the band’s direction.

Gowan said he had go to his Styx history class to understand why the band didn’t play “Mr. Roboto,” which was written by DeYoung.

“I have three professors with Tommy Shaw, James Young and Chuck Panozzo,” Gowan said. “It was never that song but always the experience of that tour. I can imagine they were young then and it was a grueling recording and touring schedule they were on back then. There is bound to be friction, and one wrong thing can be the tipping point and they need to go to the neutral corners for time out. The experience was hard on the whole band. But enough time has passed, and let’s face it, “Mr. Roboto” is a song that has lasted for decades. It’s part of the cultural reference of so many people around the world. It makes sense for us to play it.”

Gowan said the band rehearsed it and recorded it and decided it was strong.

“It doesn’t totally sound out of place with our three to four songs we are playing from ‘The Mission,’ Gowan said. “It’s an iconic song from our past into the show that people aren’t really expecting. It goes so well in the show, there is no way we’re going to take it out.”

Gowan said it’s a fun song to sing.

“When you get inside a song, deconstruct it and put the pieces back together, it’s amazing how deeper your admiration for the piece can be,” Gowan said. “Once I did that, I really started to feel a great connection to the piece.”

The Summer Stock Stage’s production of the musical “Urinetown” has a heavy dose of Hamilton County and Zionsville performers.

The production began June 28 at Ayres Auditorium at Park Tudor School, 7200 N. College Ave., Indianapolis. The remaining performances are at 7 p.m. June 30 and 2 p.m. July 1.

Three Zionsville Community High School students, Grace Tucker, as Dr. Billeaux, Lily Cross, Rebel Ensemble, and Olivia Broadwater, as Ma Josephine, are in the musical.

Another Zionsville resident, Ethan Maluccio, who performs in Rebel Ensemble, attends Brebeuf Jesuit.

There are five Carmel residents in “Urinetown.” They are Jack Ducat, Caldwell B. Cladwell, Carmel High School; Cora Lucas, Soupy Sue, CHS; Michael Krauter, Old Man Strong, Herron High School; Piper Murphy, Rebel Ensemble, Park Tudor; and Isabella Bonanno, Rebel Ensemble, Brebeuf Jesuit.

IBC Summer Gala set for July 13

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Antony Holshouser enjoyed his experience with the Carmel-based Indiana Ballet Conservatory BALLET summer program so much that he decided to return.

“It’s very intensive. You really learn a lot from the teachers, the program and all the classes here,” Holshouser said Holshouser, 17, who attends Academy of Russian Classical Ballet in Redmond, Wash. “It’s really fun and engaging.”

The summer intensive program concludes with the Fourth Annual Summer Gala at 7 p.m. July 13 at Creekside Middle School, 3525 W. 126th St., Carmel.

“It was exciting because I just like performing. It’s just fun,” Holshouser said of his 2016 appearance in the gala.

There will be a special performance by Lasha Khozashvili, a principal dancer from the Boston Ballet, and Maria Baranova, a soloist from Boston Ballet. Khozashvili regularly performs in IBC’s “The Nutcracker.”

“It’s an opportunity to see them alone

on the stage,” IBC Executive Director Jenny Okamoto said. “I think they will do a contemporary piece as well.”

Students will do excerpts from “Le Corsaire,” prepared by founding Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva-Randall.

“We’re going to do some original contemporary (pieces) like we always do,” Okamoto said. “We create the new pieces for the Diersing kids during the summer intensive.”

Okamoto said approximately 65 students from across the U.S. and Canada attend the session.

Eli Diersing, 17, is from Bloomington but attends the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. This was his first time attending the IBC summer intensive program.

He will head to another summer intensive program in Grand Rapids, Mich., following the gala.

Diersing has been dancing for 10 years but has become more serious in the past five years.

Blueprint for Improvement: West Carmel kitchen transformation Commentary by Larry Greene

Background Info: This 1998 home in the Weston Ridge neighborhood of West Carmel is a great space for the owners to raise their small family.

After 20 years with no updates, the owners decided to remodel.

The goal was to create a more modern kitchen design for the homeowners while optimizing the space.

1. The largest transformation came from replacing the cabinetry with white cabinets on the perimeter and dark gray island cabinets. The contrasting cabinets help make the space appear larger than it is.

2. Additional cabinetry was added to bring the cabinets to ceiling height. This not only added storage but also helped make the space appear larger.

3. Another large transformation came from replacing the microwave with a microwave drawer which was incorporated into the island. A modern, stainless-steel range hood was installed above the stove, where the microwave previously was.

4. A modern glass subway tile backsplash and a new lighting plan finished off the look.

Symbol of enlightenment Commentary by Don Knebel For most Americans, Monticello reflects the genius of Thomas Jefferson. For Jefferson, the house reflected his aspirations for his nation.

TRAVEL On Jefferson’s 21st birthday in 1764, he took possession of the 5,000-acre plantation near Charlottesville, Va., he had inherited from his father and began designing a house for a mountaintop where he once played. Within five years, Jefferson had completed plans for a house featuring a two-story portico and incorporating principles of Italian architect Andrea Palladio, whose treatise he had studied. In 1770, workers began building the eight-room house atop the mountain Jefferson had named Monticello, Italian for Little Mountain. The house was largely completed by 1784, when Jefferson went to France as minister of the United States.

While in France, Jefferson concluded that French Neoclassical buildings, such as the Hotel de Salm, better exemplified his Enlightenment political and social ideals than did Monticello. After Jefferson returned from France, he began a neoclassical refashioning. Craftsmen, assisted by some of Jef-

ferson’s slaves, removed the second story, added rooms to the sides and rear and erected a shallow octagonal dome over the pediment of the west portico, a detail inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The rebuilt house, with 21 rooms, including 12 bedrooms for Jefferson’s extended family, was completed in 1809. Despite Jefferson’s dislike of English architecture, the finished house resembled London’s Chiswick House, which Jefferson had visited with John Adams and then denigrated. Jefferson kept making revisions at Monticello until he died, deeply in debt, on July 4, 1826, 50 years to the day after signing the Declaration of Independence that he had written.

The fastidiously maintained buildings and gardens of Monticello are a UNESCO World Heritage site, open every day except Christmas. Visitors willing to climb steep stairs can now explore the green-floored Dome Room, whose intended purpose remains a mystery.

Wouldn’t it be cool to be part of the team that gets to pick which words get added to the dicGRAMMAR GUY tionary? Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like my fellow word nerds would geek out to sit on the Oxford English Dictionary (OED)’s new words team. As a dictionary outsider looking in, I’d like to provide commentary on some of the most notable recent (June 2018) additions to the OED. Binge-watch (verb): It’s something we’ve all done, whether or not we’re proud to admit it. We binge-watch old seasons of “Parks and Recreation” and catch up on “The Crown” before the next episodes are added. Binge-watching is the emotional equivalent of destroying an entire pint of Ben & Jerry’s in one sitting.

In the short run it feels amazing, but it’s not the best long-term habit.

Energy vampire (noun): This usually refers to electronic devices that continue to use phantom power while turned off, yet are still plugged into an outlet. In my case, it’s the nickname I gave to my 4-year-old.

Impostor syndrome (noun): It’s the feel-

ing many people have when they doubt their own adequacy or qualifications for the task ahead of them. Believe it or not, award-winning humor columnists still suffer from impostor syndrome when they stare at a blinking cursor on a blank page on their computer screens.

Squick (verb): This is my favorite new word because of its onomatopoeic qualities. Squick means to majorly gross someone out.

Freshness test for baking soda — To test the powers of your baking soda, pour onequarter cup of distilled white vinegar in a small bowl, then add one tablespoon of baking soda. If it fizzes, it’s fresh enough to use.

If there is no reaction when the baking soda combines with the vinegar, forget it. Just pour the contents of the box down the drain.

Chaucie’s Place provides child abuse and youth suicide prevention programming to schools and youth serving organizations. The child abuse prevention program presented by Body Safety Educators is delivered in 45-minute to 1-hour sessions in a classroom setting. These presentations are scripted, however interaction with children is encouraged. Comprehensive training will be provided by Chaucie’s Place.
