Noah Grant’s expansion in the works

At last week’s meeting of the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission, the group heard a request for a business incentive grant from 98 S. Main St. LLC coowners Mike and Valerie Swack.

Business 98 S. Main, which sits on the corner of Main and Oak streets, is the site for a potential Noah Grant’s expansion. Noah Grant’s, a steak and sushi bar, is owned and operated

by Shari Jenkins, of Zionsville.

According to Valerie, Jenkins would like to expand Noah Grants’ sushi bar into the lower level of 98 S. Main.

“This expansion will allow for their business to grow exponentially by adding an additional 50 seats into an approximate 1,400 square-foot space,” Valerie wrote in and executive summary to the RDC. “Expansion will occur by joining the two buildings by connecting them through a common wall.”

The Swacks estimate that the Noah Grant’s buildout will cost more than $100,000, which includes moving a Vectren gas line and adding fire doors between the buildings.

“It’s a very logical space for a restaurant,” Valerie said. “And this money would be used to get the space ready for Shari.”

RDC president Luke Phenicie asked Valerie what

would happen if the town did not provide incentive grant funds for the expansion, to which Valerie replied that the project probably wouldn’t happen.

“Everyone obviously recognizes the impact Shari has,” Phenicie said. “I’m assuming there’s a desire to do something here…but I think we want to think through this a little more.”

Phenicie said that if the RDC can’t provide full financial support through an incentive grant, then there are other “more creative” ways to help get the project done.

“There’s a lot of information we can at least try to collect,” said commissioner Brad Johnson.

In addition to the incentive monies requested, the RDC is anticipating Jenkins will request an additional microloan for expanding Noah Grant’s. However, Jenkins is already the recipient of a $25,000 microloan for her newest restaurant The Salty Cowboy, which will open this month.

Chair of the microloan program Katie Culp said that extending a second microloan to Jenkins has minimal risk to the town since Jenkins has a history of operating vibrant businesses.

“We’re pretty open to this upcoming request,” Culp said.

Phenicie said that the group should look at this request as coming from two separate entities, even though the restaurants have the same owner.

“I’m in favor of it personally,” he said.

Body safety week for kids

Last week the Zionsville Fire Dept. participated in a joint training exercise with five other fire departments. The training was conducted by Marathon Petroleum and provided hands-on exercises regarding foam capabilities and extinguishment of fires involving bulk petroleum storage facilities. The training was held on-site at the Marathon Fuel Terminal on Robison Road in Indianapolis.

All ages racing in All Comers Track

By Zach Manges • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville’s All Comers Track program is back for another summer. The group of runners meets at 7 p.m. every Thursday at Zionsville West Middle School. The all-ages running clubs club is for casual and competitive participants alike.

“It’s about 70 percent family-oriented and 30 percent competitive. We have a lot more kids than adults, so it’s just balanced that way,” said co-founder and primary coordinator of the program Brandon Daugherty. “Then for adults that don’t mind the casual environment, it’s a fun way to get a track workout and compete against others that might be able to push you.”

Daugherty started the group in 1997, however in 2006 it disbanded due to family obligations. In 2009 Daugherty moved back to Zionsville from Brownsburg and connected with the middle school to re-establish All Comers two years later.

For Daugherty, bringing back the program was simply out of love for the sport.

“Running is my passion in life. It was a matter of enjoyment when we started the series and I wanted to bring that back for new families today. I felt like it was something I could do with the help of friends and family,” Daugherty said.

“I knew it could be a good community event. We could teach kids how track works and grow the popularity of the sport.”

and sprint races, though Daugherty frequently hears requests for other events including the long jump, high jump, hurdles, and pole vault.

“If we get more dedicated support, I can see it evolving into a more complete track meet,” Daugherty said. “If not then, we’ll just continue it as a community event and a friendly environment for people to learn about track.”

The program, which is sponsored by The Runners Forum, hopes to gain some more competi-

tive participants, though above all it remains a place for athletes ranging from toddlers to seniors to come together and share in the sport.

“For anyone with interest in running, it’s the perfect casual environment to come out and have a good time,” Daugherty said. “That’s the most important message we try to get out there.”

Special Olympics Indiana athlete Hugh Breen, of Zionsville, received gold in the 400 meter walk race, silver in the mini javelin race, gold in the 800 meter walk, and gold in the 1500 meter walk in the Special Olympics USA games last week.

Breen said that attending the USA games is, “a way of getting the general public to notice ‘us’ and see that we are just as able and gifted as they are.”

“It gives us a chance to show our friends and families our real abilities. It is a privilege to attend National Games because it shows how far I’ve come in SO over the years. Decorative trims to add flair

If you are looking for something fun to add to your décor, try some of the new and exciting decorative trims that are now design available. Just like adding a fun necklace or ring to your favorite outfit, trims can make a true statement of your style and personality. Your options used to be brush fringe and cord but now the possibilities are endless. From wide tapes that you can add to drapery panels or valances to leather, metal studs, seashells and crystals for pillows the only limit will be your imagination and creativity.

Add them to a plain shower curtain or bed skirt and turn it from ordinary to fantastic. They can also be a great way to add some individuality to your upholstered pieces by running a tape along the base of a skirt or adding contrast cord to the seat and back cushions. You can find every color from bright primaries to blacks and grays.

They can be the primary focus of your room or a subtle way to add texture and dimension.

For a long time trims were found mostly in

traditional interiors but you can now find fabulous patterns and materials that fit in nicely with transitional and even contemporary design schemes. There are patterns that add an architectural touch or tapes with embroidered flowers and beads. There are also weather proof trims that can be used in outdoor installations. Add a weather proof band to your cabana drapes and a brush fringe to you outdoor pillows to create a space that is truly your own.

Like with everything there is a wide range of prices on trims but I am confident that you can find something in your price range to add some punch and sparkle to your next decorating project. So whether you are working with a professional designer or want to get your fabric glue out and add a trim to readymade drapery panels the most important thing is to have fun and trust your creativity!

Habitat for Humanity The 8th annual Apostles Build began last Saturday with a wall build in the parking lot of the Central Christian Church in Lebanon. More than 60 volunteers from several Boone County churches put together all the exterior and interior walls in under an hour. The build will be finished in eight weeks, with the recipient being Paige Groves and her 8-year-old daughter Kaylee. “Habitat for Humanity means the world to Kaylee and I, and we are so blessed. We are going to be able to create a lot of memories and share a lot of love in our new home. Electric shock and my plant Commentary by Ward Degler

Never trust a house plant. When you least expect it, it will turn on you. My philodendron, for example, knocked out the pLAIN tALK electricity in the back of the house three months ago.

Until last week I had to rely on extension cords to run things back there.

It was early March and I had just turned on an electric heater. Suddenly, the lights went out.

Circuit breaker, I thought. After all, I had several lights, two ceiling fans and an assortment of computers and printers running. It had happened before.

This time though, it wasn’t the breaker. I started checking outlets. Maybe it was a loose wire?

More than 13 outlets later, I found nothing.

Next I turned my attention to the ceiling fan.

Hadn’t it mysteriously stopped running a few months earlier only to inexplicably go back to work a couple weeks later? I hustled up the stepladder and took a look. Nothing there either.

There was one weird thing however. All the wall outlets are wired in a series, a wide circle

threading through the office and studio. The first three of these outlets worked fine. Everything after that was dead. My circuit tester said there was a short somewhere.

I blindly pursued one dead end (or dead circuit) after another. Last week it dawned on me that I had never checked the third outlet. Why would I? It was working fine.

Cautiously, I opened it and there it was: the wires leading to the fourth outlet were burnt black, the insulation was gone and one wire had broken.

Just above the outlet, looking smug, sat the philodendron. Turns out, when I watered the plant, a few drops rolled into the outlet. Over time it caused the short.

The lights were back on in an hour. And, believe me, I will never trust my philodendron again.

As I remember: Flossie’s sign Commentary by Donna Monday

Drive by the intersection of Sixth and Sycamore Streets in the village someday and take a look at the stop sign on the pLAIN tALK southwest corner.

Looks like a normal stop sign, doesn’t it? Well, today it is, but that wasn’t always the case. Years ago the stop sign belonged to Flossie Pedersen. At least, she thought it did. Flossie lived at the house on that corner.

She was an elderly widow and was one of Zionsville’s true characters. She and her kind are a part of why I loved this town and wanted to rear my children here.

Flossie and her stop sign had a couple of runins with town officials. Frequently, when a person has to appear before the town board over a stop sign incident, the incident involves alcohol, or at least a traffic infringement.

Not so with Flossie’s incidents. You might say they involved decorating. That’s right, decorating.

Summer decorating and winter decorating.

In the spring, Flossie planted a morning glory at the base of the stop sign. Flossie had a green thumb, and the morning glory did what morning glories are supposed to do. It grew and it climbed. And it grew and it climbed some more.

It grew and climbed so much, in fact, that it completely covered the red stop sign, which was resplendent in blue morning glories.

Town officials deemed this unsafe; so they and the 80-something-year-old Flossie had their say at town hall.

Flossie won the battle, and octagon-red gave way to morning- glory blue. Round one to Flossie.

Round two came at Christmas time. Flossie decided to decorate her stop sign once more.

Her decorations were charming with the usual red and green bangles, boughs, and bows. Which, of course, made the stop sign very festive. Unfortunately, town officials found it not as charming and festive as hazardous.

Again, they and Flossie did battle, and again the artistic widow won. Motorists, who had learned to stop at the morning glory vine, now learned to stop at the big red bow.

I miss Flossie. I really do. I hope to live as long as she. And if I do, I’d like to be like Flossie in my old age. I’d like to be just eccentric enough to make the kind of difference that makes people smile.

Even we grandmas need role models, and Flossie was a good one.

As the Fourth of July is nearing fireworks sales are going up. But for residents who want to have a backyard light show there are some things to make note of before striking a match.

“As there is no local ordinances dealing with use of consumer fireworks, we go by and enforce the Indiana state laws regarding them,” said Zionsville Police Dept. Captain Jeffrey Morris.

The Indiana Dept. of Homeland Security has mandated the safety codes for operating fireworks on personal property.

According to Indiana code, violations to the following rules can result in arrest:

• Fireworks can only be purchased by someone who is 18 years old or older.

• Children may only possess or use any kind of fireworks when an adult is present.

• Fireworks may be used on the user’s property, on the property of someone who has consented the use of fireworks on that property, and at a special discharge location.

• Fireworks may only be used between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on days that are not national holidays.

• Fireworks may only be used between 9 a.m. and midnight on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and New Year’s Eve.

Did you know that a person who recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally uses consumer fireworks and damages someone else’s property commits a class A misdemeanor and is punishable by imprisonment for one year and a fine of $10,000?

Watermelon and feta salad

Nothing says summer is here like a juicy and sweet watermelon! It is such a beautiful fruit that it has the power to make everybody happy.

For this Fourth of July, I want to share one of my favorite barbecue side dishes, a watermelon and feta salad. Try this refreshingly delightful dish and you have got the perfect kickoff for a fun and wonderful weekend.

Note: I love watermelon because there is a lot more to it than its sweetness and juiciness. It’s also loaded with phytonutrients, vitamin A and C, and a good amount of potassium, plus vitamin B6 and thiamine. It soothes sore muscles and fights off infections.

WATERMELON AND FETA SALAD WITH BASIL VINAIGRETTE Ingredients: 6 lb. watermelon, cold (reserve seeds for roasting), 1/2 - 1 cup watermelon seeds, 1/2 teaspoon olive oil , 1/8 teaspoon sea salt, 7 oz. mixed baby greens, 1/2 cup lemon basil (or regular basil) , 1 1/2 cup feta cheese.

Directions: PREPARE THE WATERMELON. Wash the rind of the watermelon with regular soap. Slice into as many 1-in. thick wedges as you can. Cut the rind off each wedge with a paring knife tip and cut each wedge into 1-in. rows. Cut the rows into 1-in. cubes. Gently pop out the watermelon seeds as you can go along, and set aside for roasting. Place the cubes into a colander, and place a bowl beneath the colander to catch 1/4 cup of watermelon juice for the vinaigrette.

PREPARE WATERMELON SEEDS. Rinse seeds thoroughly in colander and spread out on a cookie sheet to dry. Seeds can be patted dry but roast much better when they are completely dry.

Preheat oven to 275F. Place seeds in a mixing bowl. Add 1/2 tsp. sea salt. Toss together and spread out on shallow baking pan. Roast 50-60

minutes, until seeds are fragrant and lightly browned. Low and slow is the key to successful roasting. Set aside to cool.

BASIL VINAIGRETTE Ingredients: 6 tablespoons rice vinegar, 2 tablespoons honey, 1/4 cup watermelon juice, 1 tablespoon fresh basil, 1/2 lemon grated, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper, 1/2 light golden olive oil. Place vinegar, honey, watermelon juice, lemon basil, mustard, salt, and pepper into a small blender and blend to combine. Pour into a bowl, and slowly whisk in the olive oil. Store in a glass jar, cover and keep cool.

PREPARE GREENS. Wash and thoroughly dry the baby greens. Rinse lemon basil, gently pad dry, and cut chiffonade. In a large bowl put the green watermelon, sprinkle feta cheese and watermelon seeds. Just before serving drizzle with vinaigrette.

Down below, more than 14,000 pairs of eyes will gaze at the bursts of colors. cover story Music, food, fun and games will fill the park, where families can spend the day coming together to celebrate America’s independence.

It’s finally time for the annual Lions Club July Fourth celebration, and according to the members of the Zionsville Lions Club, this year’s festivities will be ones no one will want to miss.

“This year’s traditional Fourth of July Celebration looks to be larger than ever before, with fireworks, entertainment, and family fun activities for all ages,” said Leigh Ann Akard, former president of the Lions Akard Club and current public relations representative for the July Fourth celebration.

In addition to the Lions Club,

Akard said this is the first year that the Leos Club, the junior Lions Club for Zionsville, will be in the park as well. The Leos Club, made up of kids from ages 12 to 18, does different projects supporting the Lions Club around Zionsville. This year, they will be selling snow cones, glow sticks, and raffle tickets.

The raffle tickets that can be purchased from the Leos Club or from members of the Lions Club are entered for the chance to win a brand new Weber Grill package valued at $800, or $500 cash.

The winner gets to choose. This prize package is a new idea from the Lions Club. All proceeds go towards park updates and improvements around Lions Park.

Newly elected president of the Zionsville Lions Club, Mike Hefner, said he has a lot to look forward to with his first July 4th as president. “[I will be] getting there early to help set up and then watching the park fill up all day, grabbing a quick bite to eat from one of our great food vendors, watching the kids dance in the gazebo to the tunes by the DJ, and of course those tremendous fireworks to cap off the night,” Heffner said.

While nearly all members of the Lions Club will be in attendance to help out with the event, Steve Gayheart, the July 4th event chair, is the real man in charge.

Gayheart is on the board of directors for the Lions Club and is looking forward to putting on a show with this years’ events.

“The park will be packed,” he said.

The fireworks begin at 10 p.m., but the park will open at 5 p.m. with plenty of activities to keep families busy until dark. There will be moonwalks, clowns, face painting, watermelon-eating contests, three-legged races and more for the kids, complete with prizes for winners.

At 6 p.m. bands will begin playing inside the gazebo. Later in the night, the winners of Miss Indiana and Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen are expected to take the stage to preform their talents. Autograph signings will follow both of their performances.

This community event is free, however in-park parking is $5.

The Fourth of July celebration is the second largest fundraiser for the Lions Club, and according to its organizers it never fails to be full of family fun.

App–lying genius to life Commentary by Terry Anker For those of us among the uninitiated, software for the increasingly ubiquitous so-called smartphone is referred to as Apps rather than the standard desk or laptop parlance where such things are identified as “programs.” The expression is the diminutive of the software “application” that is how one might hope to use the program to accomplish an objective.

With the game-changing introduction of the iPhone some years ago, Steve Jobs and his crew opened Apple’s smart phone’s interface to the world. Anyone that might have an interest in developing an application for use by the device was invited to do so. Rather than create barriers to folks imagining how we could live differently in a mobile and connected world – and perhaps even more importantly, rather than try to keep every potential dollar of software earnings from themselves – Apple lit a bonfire of creativity that is still burning bright. On my own phone, I can exchange a unit of measure or currency into any

other instantly. I can not only check the status of my flight but can actually see the incoming plane’s location on a map. I can watch a movie.

I can post to social media. I can buy a book then read it on my screen. There are many thousands of applications eager to be downloaded and hopeful to become indispensable. Without doubt, some are not so requisite. A quick perusal of any teenager’s phone will show a sophomoric retinue of silly games and amusing contrivances designed to pass the time.

But isn’t the lesson that sometimes an open architecture, like and open mind, can invite genius along with the distracting? My favorite is a flashlight app that uses the flash from the camera phone to light the way. I’d be app-lying if I didn’t admit I love it!

Let me start by saying how very sorry I am for your present “situation.” Though I have been through this phase with humor my own children, I had forgotten just how stressful keeping a newly-minted toddler alive is.

I’ve spent the better part of a week with three of my nieces – twins who just turned 2 and a 20-month old – and I am downright exhausted.

My house is a disaster, my new mini-van has been dutifully christened with spilled Goldfish and half a box of Kleenex, and my thankful prayers to Mother Mary for having children old enough to fend for themselves have increased tenfold. I thought I’d successfully block this own period of my life, but with this full immersion into parenting precocious rug rats, traumatic memories are returning at an astonishing rate.

My mantra for the past few days has been, “Find a happy place, find a happy place.”

But you don’t need to hear about my experiences; you’re actually living them right now.

Every nap waylaid by five minutes of shuteye on the way home from Kroger; every cell phone snagged and thrown to the tile floor; every near-drowning and third-degree sunburn at the water park; I could go on and on. Your entire life is being dictated by a funny-looking short person who can barely speak, and who doesn’t give a full diaper about you getting a good night’s sleep or a peaceful dinner out.

They really are the most selfish creatures on the planet, these tiny 2-year-olds. Your entire day must revolve around their feeding times and nap times and bath times. In between all the “times,” you must stand constant vigilance lest they decide to explore the toilet or scale a bookcase. And if you parent like my sisters, you bear the added burden of feeding your kids healthy food and entertaining them sans television. (As you know, this isn’t really my style!)

I’d also like to apologize for excluding you from most of my columns. As related above, I do not recall most of 2003 when my twins were 2. It’s the brain’s way of healing, I think.

Additionally, teenagers provide ample fodder so there’s little need to revert back to earlier parenting days.

Finally, I’d like to commend you on surviving each day with a 2-year-old, and to let you know that it will get better. Not soon, of course – I personally think the fours are the absolute worst – but eventually your child will be relatively self-sufficient and some semblance of a life will return.

Editor, Let’s see if I can get this straight. So the United States invades Iraq for trumped up reasons and ousts Saddam who was a Sunni – a Sunni who fought against the Shiite government of Iran and kept them in check. While we were bogged down in a 10-year war, we emboldened Iran. We pull out of Iraq and a new Al-Qaeda-supported Sunni group is now retaking Iraq. So we ousted a Sunni government, spent billions, lost thousands of lives so that another Sunni group could retake Iraq. But this time with ties to Al-Qaeda. Now the United States is considering joining forces with the Shiite theocracy of Iran to oppose this new threat. The same Iran we are led to believe is fueling terrorists across the Middle East and in Syria. The same Iran that every presidential can-

didate trips over themselves to appear to be the toughest against. The same Iran we sanction. The same Iran that we are told wants to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth, The same Iran that is a very urgent threat. This is a great example of why a non-interventionist foreign policy is the solution.

Our foreign policy has not made us safer, it has squandered our resources, gotten many of our men and women killed and has led to a high rate of post traumatic stress disorder and suicides among our veterans. All while VA scandals are plenty and we provide worse healthcare for our veterans than we do for illegal immigrants. But we will all blindly vote in a Clinton to take on another Bush in 2016. Maybe I should just watch the World Cup. Rant complete.

Our veterans deserve better

The word tragedy is overused in our society, but the word has perhaps never been applied more correctly than to describe opinion what’s been uncovered at the VA. In May, a preliminary investigation by the VA’s Inspector General found some officials in the department had falsified records about how long veterans had waited to receive health care. Specifically, the report found 1,700 veterans at a Phoenix, hospital were kept on unofficial waiting lists in order to keep the publicly-reported wait times down. A similar list was kept at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., and problems with health care delivery at VA hospitals have been uncovered from Pennsylvania to South Carolina to Florida.

The VA has already admitted that at least 23 people have died as a result of failure to receive care.

I have long been concerned with the treatment of veterans seeking care within the VA system. My office opens more cases for frustrated veterans than we do for any other group of constituents. These individuals served our country bravely, yet they struggle to receive the benefits and services they’ve earned. The system must be changed and improved for veterans to truly get the care they need without having to contact their member of Congress to get results or attention.

In November, I brought together local and state Veterans Service Organizations for a roundtable discussion focusing on VA health care as well as problems with veteran’s disability claims, employment and homelessness.

I believe fixing the systemic problems within the VA requires new national leadership with proven health care delivery experience. That’s why I was pleased when former VA Secretary General Eric Shinseki tendered his resignation last month. The necessary culture shift must

start at the highest levels. I was also proud to vote in favor of House Resolution 4031 – the Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act – legislation which will give the incoming VA Secretary new authority to remove or transfer failing senior executives. This bill passed the House with bipartisan support, by a margin of 390-33.

Right now, according to a VA internal audit released this month, 57,000 veterans nation-wide have waited 90 days or more for their first doctors’ visits. In addition, another 64,000 veterans who have requested initial appointments never were added to a waiting list. In Indiana there are 273 veterans who have waited more than 90 days and 230 veterans who have not been placed on official waiting lists. Even one veteran waiting is one too many. With so many veterans returning from recent military conflicts, this is a problem we must address now.

This is why the House also recently passed, by an overwhelming margin of 426-0, the Veterans Access to Care Act (House Resolution 4810). This bill requires the VA to offer veterans on waiting lists for more than 14 days, or those who live more than 40 miles from a VA facility, care at a non-VA provider at the VA’s expense. The House will continue to take its oversight role seriously and push for system-wide change at the VA. I hope the Senate will pass the House’s legislation quickly, so that our veterans can begin to receive the care they need.

The men and women on the VA waiting lists served our country selflessly and heroically. We owe it to them, and their families, to pursue comprehensive solutions for a deeply troubled system.

“A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement” will be the fourth and funniest installment yet of this popular series, and it opens July 5.

No one can dish out love, life and a casserole like the Church Basement Ladies.

Set in 1960, in “A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement” the gals are once again required to face the challenges of change head-on. Beverly is turning 15 and gets her first pair of high heels for confirmation; Karin is finally learning how to drive; Mrs. Snustad and Mrs. Gilmerson plan a food booth at the county fair to raise money, and the pastor announces his impending nuptials.

Against the shifting tide, these pillars of the church stand strong in their faith and in their friendships with more crazy antics, more great new songs and more lessons reluctantly learned.

Patriotic Cheesecake Squares Crust: 1 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs, 7 TB butter, melted, 2 TB sugar Filling: 12 oz. cream cheese, softened, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 large eggs, 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, 1 cup strawberry jam, 1-pint blueberries Directions: Preheat oven to 360 degrees. Grease a 9-inch square-baking pan. Line the pan with foil, extending it over the rim; grease foil. In bowl, with fork, stir graham-cracker crumbs, butter and sugar until blended. Press mixture onto bottom of the pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Let it cool. In a small bowl, beat cream cheese at medium speed until smooth; gradually beat in sugar. Mix in eggs and vanilla until blended.

Health emergencies can happen at any time of the year, but summertime creates some unique circumstances that, unfortuwellness nately, can result in visits to the emergency room.

In the event that a health emergency does arise this summer, area hospitals are ready to help, no matter the hour.

Most facilities, like St.Vincent Carmel Hospital, provide expedient and friendly injury care – up to and including those ailments emanating from participation in sports. And summer is about a lot of activities, sports among them.

So this season, keep your health by: • Keeping an eye on your surroundings. Even something as seemingly innocent as running through a field can cause ankle and/or knee sprains if the runner unwittingly steps into a depression in the ground.

• Drinking plenty of water. Young children, pregnant and lactating mothers, athletes and the elderly are most prone to dehydration during summer months. It seems simple enough, but we always remind: You must replenish want you expend.

• Avoiding the peak hours of sun and heat if at all possible. On a given afternoon, with partly cloudy skies, the hours of 2 to 4 p.m. will deliver the highest temperatures.

• Applying sunscreen liberally and often. No matter how much sunscreen you apply,

the SPF should be 15 or higher for adequate protection, or, ideally, 30 or higher for extended time spent outdoors. In addition to using sunscreen, seek shade whenever possible, and wear sun-protective clothing, broad-brimmed hats, and UV ray-blocking sunglasses.

Lighten up your backyard barbecue Commentary by Kirsten Kaisner-Duncan, MD We wait all year to savor summertime foods – grilled burgers and hot dogs, cold salads and delicious desserts. While foods nutrition synonymous with summer taste great, these staples of the backyard barbecue can spoil our efforts to eat healthy. With some pre-planning, there are ways to enjoy seasonal “cookout” foods and maintain a healthy diet.

Look for lower-calorie alternatives – The grocery store snack aisle is full of reduced-fat and lower-calorie potato chips, tortilla chips and crackers. Choose fresh salsa instead of mayonnaise – or sour cream-based dips, or substitute fat-free sour cream and light mayonnaise in creamy dip recipes. These alternatives can also be used in cold side dishes like potato salad and cole slaw.

Load up on fruits and vegetables – Highquality fruits and vegetables are plentiful this time of year, so be sure your picnic buffet includes fresh seasonal selections. Don’t forget melon and berries, which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. For variety, add sugar snap peas, zucchini sticks and cherry tomatoes to your veggie tray.

Grill healthier choices – As a rule, choose leaner cuts of meat when preparing your out-

door cookout. For beef burgers, opt for ground sirloin or extra-lean ground beef with six to nine percent fat. If you’re grilling steak, buy cuts such as top sirloin, top round or filet mignon – all of which have less fat. For pork, tenderloin is the leanest, and if you’re grilling pork chops, use center cut and trim any fat. Light beef or turkey franks will satisfy hot dog lovers, and for those who like chicken, choose skinless chicken breasts or thighs. Top grilled entrées with reduced-fat cheese and barbecue sauce, which is a lighter alternative to mayonnaise.

Serve healthful seasonal sides – Baked beans, three-bean salads and green salads made with dark greens are great cookout side dishes.

Green salads can be spiced up with crunchy vegetables and topped with reduced-fat dressings.

Dive into lighter desserts – There’s still room for dessert – even at a healthy barbecue.

Consider light options such as frozen yogurt and fruit, angel food cake or light shortcake.

More questions to ask an advisor Commentary by Adam Cmejla

In my previous column, I provided a list of some questions that would be important to understand and know if you’re finance contemplating enlisting the services of a qualified financial professional.

I’ll take this week to round out the list of important questions that you might want to consider when evaluating a potential advisor.

How are you paid?

This is usually the 800-pound elephant in clients’ minds when they think about working with an advisor. Make sure you clearly understand how and how often your advisor is compensated.

Is there an initial planning fee or is there “no charge for financial planning?” My sales radar always goes up when I hear the words “free” or “no charge.”

What that typically means is that the advisor must sell you something in order to get paid.

Whether it’s insurance or investment-related, if they’re not charging a fee for their service, the pressure is on even more to sell you a product in order for revenue to be generated for that advisor.

That doesn’t make this business model wrong — it just means you need to be aware that there is no such thing as free and that, depending on their business model, certain products may be positioned to you that aren’t necessarily in your best interest but are done so anyways to generate fees and commissions for the advisor.

What do I get for your services?

If you’re working with a true financial planner who is providing comprehensive financial planning services, ask to see a copy of a sample financial plan that fits a similar client profile to your circumstances.

Having a working financial plan allows both the advisor and client to clearly see the longterm effects of the solutions that are proposed by the advisor rather than just looking at a single investment proposal or illustration.

Are you a fiduciary?

A fiduciary is someone who has a legal obligation to place their clients’ best interest ahead

of their own. They must also fully disclose what their fees are, how they’re compensated and whether they have any conflicts of interest.

Here’s how you can tell: if you are paying them a flat fee or they are assessing management fees on investments, they are most likely acting as an “investment advisor” or “investment advisor representative,”, thus qualifying them as a fiduciary.

If they are taking commissions on the sales of securities/products, they are acting as a registered representative of a broker/dealer and thus do not have a fiduciary obligation to you but rather a suitability obligation.

This is a slight but very distinct difference, and here’s why: even if there was a lower cost investment solution for you, they could sell you the higher commissioned product as long as they can demonstrate that the investment was “suitable” for you.

A fiduciary would have the legal obligation to offer you the lower cost alternative.

For instance, the insurance industry does not operate as a fiduciary.

In 1744, King Louis XV promised Madame de Pompadour, his official mistress, a new church honoring St. Genevieve, the patron travel saint of Paris, if he survived his mysterious illness. He recovered and the resulting Pantheon, named for a pagan temple and honoring the best minds in France, reflects the vagaries of French religious politics.

Louis put his mistress’s brother in charge of making good on his promised church. He laid the cornerstone for the building in 1764, the year Madame de Pompadour, famous for her hair style, died. The neoclassical design, in the shape of the Greek cross, drew inspiration from London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral. Because of a depleted treasury, the church remained unfinished when Louis XV died in 1774. His successor, grandson Louis XVI, loaned his bankrupt government 4 million francs to finish it.

When the church was finally completed in 1790, it featured a massive triple dome, supported on 258 columns, extending 268 feet above the street. By that time, the French Revolution was in full swing, railing against the power of royalty and the Catholic Church. In 1791, the newly constituted National Constituent Assembly ordered

that the church be transformed into a mausoleum honoring French heroes. The building took its new name, meaning “all the gods,” from the domed Pantheon in Rome. In 1792, Louis XVI was beheaded for the claimed excesses of his reign.

Twice since 1791, the Pantheon was converted to a church, each time reverting to a mausoleum as sentiments changed. Remains from 50 distinguished French intellectuals, including Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Madame Curie, are now enshrined in the Pantheon’s crypt. For six, only their hearts made it, manifesting the practice of removing organs before embalming.

The remains of Descartes, whose transfer was authorized in 1792, have yet to arrive.

The United States Capitol architect visited the Pantheon in 1838 and made liberal use of its design concepts in the rebuilt Capitol dome. In 1851, French physicist Leon Foucault demonstrated the earth’s rotation by suspending his famous pendulum from the center of the Pantheon’s dome.

Active and passive voices Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “I hear a lot about the active and passive voices, and how the active is preferable.

I seem to remember disGramMar guy cussing them in school, but it’s been a while.

Could you do a quick refresher course?”

Answer: One of the first things they drill into you in journalism school is to USE ACTIVE VOICE. The second thing is always to triple check the spelling of a source’s name … but that’s another topic.

Why is active voice stressed so early and so often? Well, as you may guess from its name, active voice is great for when you want to highlight the action early in a sentence. And with limited space on the page and limited attention spans from your readers, you need to make every word count.

We’ll be using two words to talk about active and passive voice for the rest of the column: “agent” and “patient.” To keep things simple, the “agent” is the person or object performing an action, and the “patient” is the person or object being acted upon.

Consider the following sentences: “Team USA scores a goal!”

“Germany is scored on by Team USA!”

The first is active and the second is passive.

Which conveys the action better? The first sentence does, because the subject and the agent are the same. In the second sentence, Team USA is still the agent, but it’s relegated to the end of the sentence while the patient, Germany, is moved to the subject. In active voice we want our subjects performing the action.

Now, there are some good reasons to use the passive voice. For one, you’re not Ernest Hemingway. The passive voice is also used when you don’t know, or don’t want to mention, the agent.

Consider this sentence: “Three suspicious fires were started overnight.” The fires didn’t start themselves, but we don’t know who did.

Passive voice is also useful when the patient is more important than the agent. If someone asks you how your leg was broken, you might say, “I was hit by a car,” rather than, “A car hit me.” Either version is acceptable but, hey, forget that other guy – you’re the one with the broken leg.

A small testament to freedoms Commentary by Randy Sorrell July seems to be an emotional month for many. It’s a good idea to pack these items in clearly labeled boxes and store them in an easy to access place. That way, you’ll be able to find the things you need quickly.

In the kitchen, food preparation is likely going to be the most difficult part of your kitchen remodel. First, choose a new area to house your refrigerator. You may not have access to your oven or stovetop. To compensate, you might

Make small shopping trips so that you don’t have to worry about spoiled food. You may also want to stock up on plastic silverware, plates and cups to make cleanup easier.

When it comes to the bathroom, you may want to negotiate a temporary utility sink or shower, if your primary bathroom is being renovated. Typically bathrooms become unusable after demo the very first day. If you have a closet off your master you will want to plan the access during construction or move your most used items to another area of the home. Oftentimes, homeowners will move into another bedroom and bathroom during construction. You will want to talk to your contractor to find out the details

behind construction plans so that you can make adjustments to your daily living schedule.

Adult Full and Part-time Positions Westfield High School Student Part-time Assistants (age 16 and up) BAC before and after school care grades K-4 Zone 58 after school care grades 5 to age 13 TOTS Child Care infants through preschool All Aboard Program pre-kindergarten Student Support Programs is hosting a Job Fair on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 for full-time and part-time positions in the Westfield Washington Schools (WWS) child care programs. BAC is offered at each of the WWS elementary buildings. Zone 58 is offered at Westfield Intermediate School. TOTS Child Care program for infants to preschool children is located at Monon Trail Elementary School. The All Aboard program for pre-kindergarten children is offered in all six WWS elementary buildings.

Prior to attending the Job Fair, complete an online application for the BAC Assistant positions and/or TOTS and All Aboard Assistant positions at www.wws.k12.in.us > Departments > Human Resources > Employment Opportunities.

BAC and Zone 58 work schedules vary during breaks. On school days, BAC has a split shift from 6:30-9 a.m. and 2-6 p.m. Zone 58 hours are 2-6 p.m. WHS student assistant positions are 3-6 p.m. TOTS and All Aboard full-time and part-time positions vary between 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All positions are Monday through Friday and are year-round including staff development days, school breaks, and summer.
