The intersection is expected to remain open throughout most of the project, but some temporary closures or lane restrictions could be in place.

The roundabout is expected to be complete before school resumes in August.

Carmel City Center Drive and Range Line Road was closed for roundabout construction last week. Construction is nearing the final stages. The job was estimated to take 14 days. There will continue to be partial closures of the intersection until completion, which is anticipated to be on or prior to July 1.

Towne Road and 106th Street is still closed for roundabout construction. Construction is estimated to take 45 days.

Hazel Dell Parkway and 116th Street is closed for roundabout construction, estimated to take 75 days.

Spring Mill Road is closed south of the Main Street roundabout to 116th Street except for local traffic. Motorists are encouraged to use Illinois Street as a detour. The closure is expected to last until fall.

Westfield East 151st Street will close for construction of a roundabout at Westfield Boulevard. The closure is expected to last 60 days. Motorists traveling eastbound on East 151st Street will encounter detour routing which will bypass roundabout construction at the new intersection of East 151st Street and Westfield Boulevard between Greyhound Pass and U.S. 31.

Target will only be accessible to traffic from the east.

Casey Road is closed north of Ind. 32 for approximately a half-mile for the construction of the Ditch Road extension roundabout. The closure is expected to last 60 days. *Updates accurate as of press time.

ZCHS student launches company

“I’ve always been violet satin interested in making my own money as a child, selling jewelry, lemonade, inventing things,” she said. “I really enjoy being able to put the business together by myself, and I love marketing and advertising.”

Curry, who just finished her sophomore year at Zionsville Community High School, is the founder of Violet Satin, an online company that sells iPhone cases for women and other phone accessories. The company ships to anywhere in the U.S., and customers have come from all across the nation.

Curry, who started the business in February 2016, said she designs some of the phone cases that are on her website, and the production comes from manufacturers online.

“I have a website that is connected to my online website that creates custom-made products,” Curry said.

It took approximately four to five months for her business to really become profitable, Curry said. Instagram is the primary source of promotion to her website. Violet

Mascots to play peewee teams

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com The NFL Mascots vs. Peewees Game 2017 will return June 29 at Carmel High School.

The game is held in confootball junction with the NFL Mascot Summit.

“We started the summit last year. It’s a week of business meetings for all of us to get better with community initiatives,” said Trey Mock, mascot coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts. “We also wanted to come together and come up with a great event to benefit the community of Indianapolis.”

Last year, the games raised more than $5,000 for Special Olympics of Indiana and $5,000 for a family that had just lost a young son to cancer.

“This year we’re doing the same thing.

This year all the proceeds are going to Make-A-Wish and the Colts Foundation, which is our not-for-profit of the Indianapolis Colts. It allows us to do all the things we do in the community,” Mock said.

Gates open at 4 p.m. The NFL mascots will be present for an autograph session from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

If you’re contemplating filing for divorce, you may be wondering, “What happens next?” Taking that first step can be scary, can leave you feeling sad, can sometimes even offer forms of relief, but often it just leaves a sense of anxiety because of the unknown. If you take out all the different complexities that can convolute each individual divorce, the legal process itself can be broken down into straightforward steps.

Indiana law requires a 60-day cooling-off period. Once divorce paperwork has been filed, a court cannot legally dissolve a marriage until after 60 days have passed. This 60-day waiting period gives couples an opportunity to reconcile before any final court orders are entered, but in the event reconciliation is not possible, this time should be used to determine what will happen with the marital estate and any children of the marriage.

Preliminary orders may be necessary. Preliminary orders, often also referred to as “provisional” orders, are one of the first steps to consider after filing for divorce. You can get provisional orders two ways: by agreement or via a hearing with the court. The benefit of these preliminary orders is that they lay out the rights, responsibilities, and obligations of each party during the 60-day waiting period. Who will pay the mortgage? Who will live where? Will I get any maintenance?

How about child support?

Depending on your own personal family situation, you may or may not need provisional orders. Regardless of the method used, the terms will be binding on both parties until further order of the court or until a final settlement agreement has been entered in the case.

Discovery is an important tool and shouldn’t be ignored! You’ll hear the term “discovery” throughout your divorce proceedings. Discovery, simply put, is a way for each party to lay all their assets and liabilities on the table; it provides a means to an end. Why is this important? Because Indiana law presumes a 50/50 split of all marital assets and debts.

You can expect to have to fill out forms regarding information such as

your weekly income, monthly expenses, any liabilities you owe, as well as any assets you own, including but not limited to bank accounts, retirement accounts, and even life insurance accounts. You may hear the term Interrogatories or receive Requests for Production of Documents, which are the most common forms of discovery used in a divorce.

Although they can be time consuming, these types of discovery requests are an important step in the process because they’re used to gather necessary information to settle divorce. Discovery is typically crafted entirely around the specifics of your family situation so, if you’ve got children expect to see some questions and requests that specifically pertain to those children. If you’re a business owner, you can expect to see the same type of requests surrounding the business.

Mediation is a great way to customize an agreement specifically to the needs of your family. After preliminary orders, if any, have been issued and after discovery is complete, the next thing to consider is whether mediation is a viable option. In fact, many courts require parties to at least attempt to settle the divorce at mediation before a final hearing in the matter. Mediation allows the involved parties to negotiate settlement terms without the necessity of attending court.

A final hearing is the last step in the process of divorce. When it’s not possible to come to terms on your own, through the attorneys, or via mediation, you can expect you’ll be heading to court. A judge will hear the case and then issue orders regarding property settlement and custody, parenting time, and child support orders. Keep in mind that this step in the process doesn’t afford couples the same flexibility as mediation.

Author highlights Hoosiers

A fast-food franchise leader, a sports star and a Native American are among the 32 Hoosiers profiled in a new books book by Zionsville resident Richard Gunderman, a chancellor’s professor at Indiana University.

“Hoosier Beacons” began as a newspaper column by Gunderman in honor of the state’s bicentennial.

“A lot of kids, and even Gunderman grown kids like me, don’t know much about the heritage of this state,” said Gunderman, an Indiana native.

“These were people who knew adversity, who really had to struggle in life.”

Gunderman said he hoped the articles would illustrate the impact people in the state had on future generations. He was encouraged to turn the columns into a book to reach a wider audience.

“I think it’s hard for us to know who we want to be and where we want to go as neighbors and citizens, and even human beings, if we don’t know something

“Hoosier Beacons” is Gunderman’s 11th book. His 12th, “We Come to Life with Those We Serve,” will be released in September.

Woman dies in house fire news@currentzionsville.com At approximately 7:50 p.m. June 20, Boone County Sheriff Deputy Rob Watson reported a house on fire with flames police visible at 710 N. US 421 in Zionsville. Watson made several attempts to alert occupants.

As Zionsville Fire Dept. units responded, they were advised there could be someone inside the residence. The Zionsville Fire Dept. arrived within five minutes of the initial call and made an aggressive interior attack to locate and confine the fire.

A Whitestown Fire Dept. crew that was assigned search and rescue located a victim and removed her outside to a waiting paramedic ambulance crew. The victim, identified as 67-year-old Susan E. Cutright,

was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor who tried to make entry into the home prior to the fire departments’ arrival was treated and released at the scene. No firefighters were injured.

After an investigation, authorities announced that the fire was accidental and, according to a June 21 police report, “​associated with careless smoking around in-home medical oxygen.”​The fire’s origin has been identified as the center bedroom in the home. ​The victim’s​family was notified and a memorial fund has been established at Old National Bank to help her family pay for expenses associated with the fire. Community members wishing to help can visit any Old National Bank branch and make a deposit to Susan Cutright Benefit Account.

Nature Play Days encourage outdoor exploration

The week of June 10 to 18 children were encouraged to enjoy outside events during Nature Play Days in Zionsville.

The Zion Nature Center, which initiated the event, encouraged other organizations around town to participate with events that “have to be outside and have to be recreation or nature-based,� said Mindy Murdock, Zionsville park naturalist. The 13 events were in all areas of Zionsville, with many at the Zion Nature Center and Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library.

Approximately 75 people visited Maplelawn to tour the Depression-era farmstead and learn about life in the 1930s.

Recreation on Wheels launched

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Whitestown Parks and Recreation recently unveiled a new program: Recreation on Wheels. It is designed to get parks kids and families outside playing in the summer weather.

“This is the first year we’ve done this,” said Sarah Burns, event coordinator. “With how much growth Whitestown has had as far as young families and looking for things to do, it just made sense for us to launch it.”

Because of sponsorships with TDS and Witham Health, the parks department was able to purchase outdoor activity equipment, including soccer balls, basketballs, kickball bases, ladder golf, a bubble machine and more.

“We will continue to buy equipment as we see what people really like or are requesting,” Burns said.

Each week the department will load up a trailer and take the equipment to a Whitestown park or open green space.

“We’re doing this to encourage people to get outside and enjoy our parks and green spaces,” Burns said. “It’s so easy for kids to get caught up with electronics. We want

to encourage them to get outside, play and be active.”

The schedule will change each week to allow busy families times during the day, evening and weekend to take advantage of the free program.

“I made it so that you really have to look at our social media to see where we’re going to be, because I want to cater to different people’s schedules. I decided to make it very scattered throughout the month to make sure that everybody has a chance to come out and enjoy,” Burns said.

Michael Bower becomes the first ordained priest from St. Alphonsus

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Some people know from a young age what career they will pursue, but Michael Bower didn’t see the cover story priesthood in his future.

“I never thought about being a priest growing up,” Bower said. “I didn’t really know very many priests, personally, and I wasn’t all that inspired by their example.”

Born in Maryland, Bower moved to Zionsville in 2000 with his father and brother to be closer to his father’s family. Bower, 27, joined St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic church in 2004. Little did he know it would be one of his first steps toward becoming the first ordained priest from St. Alphonsus.

Bower became an ordained Catholic priest June 3 at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette along with three other men. They took a vow of celibacy, a vow of simplicity and a vow of obedience to Bishop Timothy Doherty, who guides the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana. Bower said his first Mass of Thanksgiving June 4 at St. Alphonsus.

“There’s an awful lot of people in this parish that he knows, or more that know him, who have been praying for him and are anxious to be a part of his ordination,” said Rev. Dennis O’Keefe, pastor at St. Alphonsus.

“They want to be able to rejoice with him.”

A new mindset

Two new priests joined St. Alphonsus while Bower was in his senior year of high school and altered his perception of the priesthood. He said they were younger and more charismatic than ones he’d seen before.

“For the first time in my life I met a couple of priests who were convicted of what they believe in and were able to convince people of the truth of faith, of God’s existence and life’s big questions,” Bower said.

“It was really inspiring to me.”

Bower said he felt a call from God and entered the seminary after graduating from high school eight years ago.

He said it’s a long process, because the Catholic Church wants faith and reason to work together rather than contradict, so each student must study philosophy and theology to complete seminary.

Bower studied in Ohio, Minnesota, Rome, Italy and Indiana during those eight years.

He completed his four-year college degree in philosophy and theology.

Bower said seminary was the most blessed and joyful time of his life.

“We weren’t talking about who got drunk last night or what’s going on in the media or the sports world,” Bower said. “We’re talking about philosophy, history and theology, things that so many people don’t ever have the chance to be educated in or

to talk about. So it made for some really strong fraternity and friendship that will last my whole life.”

Seminarians also attend formation meetings monthly to ensure they stay on track to become a better man and priest.

“To have that sort of accountability for all these years I think has really forced me to look at things in my life and take care of issues from the past and be a stronger man for the future,” Bower said.

Words of wisdom

During seminary, Bower sought out O’Keefe for advice and mentorship. O’Keefe has known Bower since becoming pastor in 2006.

O’Keefe said being a good listener is the most important piece of advice he could pass on.

“We’re in a culture that people do not feel listened to. People do not feel heard. Making someone feel as though they have been heard when they give expression to pain or opinion, either one, it helps to keep a conversation and then move in a direction that’s productive,” O’Keefe said.

At the end of this month, Bower will receive his first parish assignment, where he will serve as an associate pastor for two to three years. He will get one other assignment before becoming a pastor at a parish.

“All through seminary, my desire to be a priest has only grown more and more every year, and (I’m) just excited to get started,” he said.

Silence of our own music

Commentary by Terry Anker Walking across the lush grounds of any college campus, one is struck by the silence of the students as they pass. The teeming masses slip by quietly, ears filled with tiny buds delivering music, podcasts or other noise directly into the brain of the would-be scholar. Without looking up, they stare blankly into the phone or other device controlling the flow of bits and bytes.

But is it the same to listen to music in one’s ear as it is to hear it in a crowd? As we become more isolated in our opinions – and our sources of information – we rarely share communion with our fellow humans in its receipt. Is music, and so many other things, better if it’s experienced collectively? Do we become trapped in our own thinking as we restrict our sources? To be sure, we are often best-advised to stand on our own. Peer pressure and the lemmingeffect have ruined any number of young and promising lives. We must stand for our own sense of right and fight for those unable to defend themselves.

Yet, if we hear only our own music can we hope to understand the perspectives of others? We pass links of funny YouTube videos – but it is in watching the videos together crowding around the same tiny screen that we find the most joy. In retreating into our own personalized and shrinking minorities, do we ensure our own isolation even as we imagine that we are simply living a life of our own design? Can we hope to understand the music of others if we never have occasion to hear it?

The wrens didn’t wait

There was an eerie silence when we came home. Three days earlier when we left for our annual plain talk family reunion the area around the front porch where the birdhouse hangs was a hotbed of screaming commerce.

The wrens that had taken up residence there several weeks earlier had patiently incubated their eggs until they hatched.

What followed could only be described as a feeding frenzy.

Wrens do nothing in silence. The newborns suddenly realize they are hungry and shriek nonstop for nourishment. The parents strap on their fastest feathers and hunt for groceries. One at a time, they flit back to the house, poke their beaks in, drop their cargo in one hungry mouth or another and take off again.

Apparently, the female can’t sing, so she screams.

The male, meanwhile, takes a moment out of each trip to perch on a nearby branch and yodel his heart out. This obviously infuriates the female, who screams her displeasure in terms and decibels the entire neighborhood can understand.

At times, the male would arrive with a morsel before the female had departed, putting them both on the tiny front porch of the birdhouse at the same time.

The female saw this for what it was, of course: Bad planning, and wasted no time admonishing her mate to shape up and do it pronto.

Just before we left, my wife and I noticed that neither parent actually entered the house anymore. The kids were feathering out and had literally filled up the place.

We knew they would soon leave the nest, and hoped they would wait until we returned home. We still remembered the fun and confusion when the youngsters flew from the backyard nest in April. With no experience to guide them, the young wrens simply flapped their wings and hoped for the best.

They landed everywhere: On the bricks of the house, upside down on the porch screen, and in one of the potted plants.

It all took but a few minutes. Then they were gone.

We missed those few minutes at the birdhouse. They didn’t wait. But the female is already looking inside, preparing for the next clutch of eggs and screaming youngsters. And the male, naturally, is singing his heart out.

For the second leg of my 2017 Summery Vacay Series, I spent a week on the Carolina coast with my family. We humor were 25 people ranging in age from 1 to 75, sharing a single house with untrustworthy toilets and a kitchen sink literally too small to wash dishes.

In retrospect, the trip went about as smooth as possible. My two “party” sisters kept it in check this year, and because we traveled in June, the normally oppressive heat wasn’t a factor. But you can’t put that many souls together without a few snafus, although there was nothing as exciting as my 2015 accidental attempt to OD my brother-in-law with Advil that was actually Ambien. Sorry!

For starters, someone sabotaged the rib dinner my twin and I made on Monday.

After two hours of supposed cooking, we discovered the oven had been turned off.

Needless to say, that meat did not fall right off the bone. And of course, most of us are pasty-white gingers who have no business being in the sun. No blistering or vomiting, but we did have a few aloe-requiring burns.

The most fascinating “failure” of the trip came while we were all on our way home. Somewhere in Kentucky the first of many text messages pinged: “House worst condition cleaning crew has seen. Security deposit forfeited. No re-rental.” This was incredibly surprising because we hadn’t broken or damaged anything and had emptied the fridge and done the dishes. True, we did leave two toilets clogged, but in our defense, there were no plungers! Attorney Sister … Activate!

Howdy, column readers Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I turned 70 this year. And so did a 10-year-old freckled little boy named Howdy Doody. For those too young to humor remember, “The Howdy Doody Show” debuted in 1947, its star a convivial wooden marionette whose human partner in the show, Buffalo Bob Smith, lived in my hometown of New Rochelle, New York.

Each show had a story line featuring Bob and Howdy. Howdy’s voice was actually Bob Smith’s, which had been prerecorded. Within the show was a cast of characters, some human (like Chief Thunderthud and Princess SummerFallWinterSpring), along with several wood-be human marionettes, like the grumpy Mr. Bluster and the polymorphous creature Flub-a-Dub, who comprised the characteristics of eight different animals.

And there was Clarabell, the voiceless clown who communicated with two horns strapped to a box around his waist, one side labeled YES, the other NO. Clarabell uttered not a sound for 13 years until the final show, when he said, almost under his breath, “Goodbye, kids.”

The iconic program left us with at least one cultural reference: the peanut gallery, the studio area for the live audience. No adults allowed. The children were welcomed at the top of the broadcast with a robust chant by Buffalo Bob: “What time is it, kids?” The response from the audience was equally rousing: “It’s Howdy Doody time!”

In 1948, Howdy ran for president with the slogan: VOTE FOR A REAL PUPPET. His platform included two annual Christmases, fewer school days and more pictures in history books. More than 250,000 kids requested I’M FOR HOWDY buttons. He lost to Harry Truman.

In my home office sits Howdy Doody, a decades-old facsimile puppet, courtesy of my friend and toy collector Phyllis Baskerville. Her priceless gift to me had no strings attached (that’s why it’s a puppet and not a marionette).

Southern Fancy gets new home

Southern Fancy will move from a room in Black Dog Books on Main Street to a dedicated storefront across the street at 140 South Main St. by the end of June.

The new location has required a lot of renovation to become a clothing store, because the spot on Main street was most recently occupied by Inga’s Popcorn.

Harness will increase her retail space to 2,400 square feet.

“This was a good start,” she said of the 170-square-foot room in Black Dog Books.

With a retail background, Harness wanted to manage her own schedule after having a baby.

“I wanted to be a mom and stay in retail,” she said. “My goal was to bring to Main Street something reasonably priced.”

She describes her clothing lines as “trendy.” She opened her boutique in November 2015.

“It’s not something you’re going to find in the mall,” Harness said.

A Lebanon resident, Harness orders limited quantities of her items.

“Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said. “I try to keep it unique, so you’re not walking down the street wearing something someone else is.”

In her new location, she’ll expand her options of shoes, accessories, jewelry and children’s clothing.

Commentary by Jessica Hoover If you’re looking for a place for outdoor fun of all kinds, Eagle Creek Park is the place to go. With hiking trails family fun spreading across 3,900 acres and even passing

by Eagle Creek Reservoir, the park is a hiker’s paradise. Along with the reservoir, Eagle Creek is home to Lilly Lake — a popular fishing spot — and an ice-skating pond.

Water activities include boating, fishing, swimming and visiting Plunge Harbor, which has an inflatable water slide, trampoline, climbing wall and more. If you’re an animallover like I am, you’ll love that the park has a bird sanctuary and even an ornithology and discovery center. But if birds aren’t your thing, your favorite four-legged friend is welcome as long as they are on a leash, or you can set them free at the dog park located inside the park. Eagle Creek Park has something for everyone, complete with a golf course and a tree-top obstacle course.

One of its most prominent features is a sculpture called “The Ruins,” which was made by combining different sections of demolished historical buildings. As soon as you walk in the park, the stunning landscaping will catch your eye, particularly when visiting the rock garden.

However, the trails boast a natural beauty as you take a scenic trek along ravines, the White River and many other bodies of water. Holliday Park also has a playground for the kids and an impressive nature center for people of all ages.

All nature enthusiasts need to visit Fort Harrison at least once. The park has a variety of trails: some for solely hiking, some for biking and hiking and a horse trail. The horses live in the park and are available to rent from April to October. Other facilities include a visitor center, a dog park and the Museum of 20th Century Warfare. I’ve been to this park multiple times, and the beauty of it never seems to get old. Plus, when you live in central Indiana it’s hard to find anything other than flat land, but Fort Harrison State Park does have the occasional hill to mix things up a bit.

Cool Creek Park is a place you’ll want to go to with the kids or if you just want to take a leisurely walk through the woods. The 4 miles of trails are fairly flat and wide, making it easy enough for even young children to hike.

Next to the entrance there also is a playground, music pavilion, soccer field, softball field and basketball court.

The nature center is educational for all ages, teaching the whole family about the importance of preserving plants and animals. The park also offers programs for children and adults throughout the year, most of which focus on nature or art.

Although Town Run Trail Park is a bit off the beaten path, it is like a small, hidden gem that you’d drive right by if you didn’t know it was there. With the main trail following along the edge of the White River, you can see the water just between the trees. It seems to be a popular place for biking, so if you are hiking or jogging there, be cautious and ready to move out of the way. One thing about this park that stands out compared to other Indiana parks is that there are some man-made hills, which makes a bit more of a challenge if you’re up for it.

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library will host blues musician Brian Keith Wallen for a two-hour concert music July 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. Wallen, a blues-influenced acoustic guitarist, is known for his unique combination of storytelling and blues.

“I play guitar and sing. I also have a homemade percussion instrument called a stomp board,” Wallen said. “I’ll be playing a mix of original music and traditional blues, including songs recorded in Indiana in the 1920s and ‘30s.”

Born and raised in Indiana, Wallen tours nationally but said he always enjoys coming back to Indiana to perform. He has released multiple albums, travels the nation playing festivals and events and won second place in the 2015 International Blues Challenge. He also was named “Artist of the Year” by the Starr-Gennett Foundation.

“He came highly recommended by another library,” said Orton Ortwein, the adult programming coordinator at HusseyMayfield Memorial Public Library. “I trust my fellow librarians on matters such as

this. We’ve had great turnout at previous library concerts and we are expecting good things.”

During the “storytelling” aspect of his performance, Wallen will provide historical information about the songs he plays.

Registration is required. The concert will take place on the northwest lawn of the library, near the 6th Street entrance.

Attendees will need to bring their own blankets or lawn chairs for seating. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside to the nonfiction area.

Demetrius Witherspoon was involved in the rhythm and blues and pop music industry when he found his calling. film “After I shot my last music video, I thought, ‘This is what I wanted to do,’” Witherspoon said.

He then asked actress Erin Moore if she wanted to do an action film.

“It was inspired by a homeless lady I would see who was asking for money at 38th (Street) and Michigan Road and just wondered what it took her to get to that point and what if she was put in a situation where she comes out stronger on the other side,” Witherspoon said. “So I came up with the character of Ni’re, who was thrown in a multi-universe and found her way out and was trying to find her daughter.”

Witherspoon wrote, produced and directed the series. He founded his production company, DV Entertainment, in 2013.

Witherspoon, 40, describes his fourth film, “Submerge: Echo 51” as a soft reboot of the series so new viewers can jump right in.

Cienfuegos: The Pearl of the South Commentary by Don Knebel Many visitors to Cuba consider their trips complete when they have spent a few days in Havana. Cienfuegos, a coastal city 160 miles to the southeast, travel provides an entirely different experience.

Cienfuegos lies along the Bay of Cienfuegos, a haven for 18th century pirates of the Caribbean. The city was founded in 1819 by French-speaking immigrants, some of them from New Orleans. Based on then-modern ideas of urban planning, the streets where laid out on a grid, with a park at the center. The city soon became an important international port, exporting sugar cane, tobacco and other crops grown in the fertile fields nearby. Within 40 years of its founding, Cienfuegos had become the third-wealthiest city in Cuba. With their wealth, local residents built impressive neoclassical buildings along the streets surrounding the park, including a domed city hall, a theater and a cathedral. As the city expanded beyond its original 25 blocks, the grid pattern was meticulously main-

tained and the buildings in the city center were expanded. Because of its magnificent architecture, Cienfuegos became known as “La Perla del Sur,” the Pearl of the South. In 1902, when Cuba gained its independence, the central park was renamed in honor of José Martí, a Cuban national hero who had long argued for independence. A large statue of him was erected in the park.

In 2005, the center of Cienfuegos was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its representation of early urban planning in Latin America. Today’s visitors see an outstanding example of a 19th century colonial city, with the historic center much like it was more than 100 years ago. Visitors so inclined can take a ferry across the Bay of Cienfuegos to Castillo de Jagua, a fortress built by the Spanish in 1742 to protect the area from pirates.
