Zionsville contestants win pageant awards

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com It seemed fitting Paige Harder and Claire Nieshalla shared two identical honors June 16 at the Miss Indiana MISS INDIANA pageant at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center, as both have strong Zionsville ties.

Nieshalla advanced by winning Miss Fall Festival’s Outstanding Teen competition in Zionsville last year. Harder was the 2018 Miss Spirit of Indiana.

Harder, a 2015 Zionsville Community High School graduate whose parents since have moved to Carmel, was the second runner-up in the Miss Indiana 2018 competition. Nieshalla, a homeschooled senior from Zionsville, was the second runner-up in Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen 2018. Both won the Hoosier Spirit award, which is akin to Miss Congeniality, in their pageants.

“I feel humbled and honored, all glory goes to God,” Harder said. “It was a blast. There were so many great opportunities. Each day had something new. Spending time with the girls each day was fun. The board takes such good care of us. Not just the time, but the passion they put into it is so evident in our experience. I’m so grateful.”

Harder, who will graduate from Taylor University with a degree in exercise science in December, said it is amazing how the girls support each other.

Like Harder, Nieshalla said she was blessed to have such success.

“I met so many wonderful girls and the friendships are priceless,” Nieshalla said. “I’m sure a lot of the (friendships) will last forever.

It’s always your goal to be the best that you can be, but this was my first time at state, so I was leaving it up to the Lord and I knew his will to be done.”

It made it sweeter to win the awards in her hometown.

“I’m so proud to live in Zionsville and have this wonderful Miss America organization have the pageant right here in Zionsville,” Nieshalla said.

Nieshalla also received the talent award in the preliminary competition. She sang and performed on the piano her original song, “Rain.” Harder won Miss Talent for her piano

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Just before noon on June 19, more than 1,700 Duke Energy customers in Zionsville lost power. The outage affectENERGY ed business and residential locations.

A failed underground cable caused the outage, according to Dan Rhodes, a manager for Duke Energy who is responsible for community relations in Boone County.

“We are not exactly sure why it failed, but it did,” Rhodes said. “These are actually very rare.”

Three-hundred of the customers who lost power quickly regained access to the grid,

but the rest took slightly longer. All customers were fully restored by 4:30 p.m. that same day.

As part of the power restoration, some customers experienced a brief interruption at 4:15 p.m. as Duke switched from one circuit to another.

“We call that picking up the circuit,” Rhodes said.

Rhodes said that Duke is in the middle of a major upgrade to the Zionsville Turkeyfoot Substation. There has been some trouble with that substation, so his first inclination was to attribute the outage to the substation, but it apparently was not the cause.

Rhodes said the rare underground cable failure was “just bad luck”.

Council approves $277K for ZCS safety

By Sara Baldwin Schatz • sara@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council passed an additional appropriation resolution June 18 to provide $277,000 for police officers to serve as school reENERGY source officers in all Zionsville Community Schools, starting the 2018-19 school year.

The funding allows the Zionsville Police Dept. to hire three new officers specifically for the schools.

Chief of Police Robert Knox said he will fill the rest of the SRO positions from current staff. He wants the new officer to finish field training before being assigned to a school. Field training varies for each officer and can take up to six months to complete.

The additional funding passed by the council also will help pay for safety equipment.

“The school has agreed to pay half of this cost,” Knox said.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak said the town has been in discussion with the schools and sheriff since late 2017.

He said adding the safety measures to future budgets should not be a problem but applying the changes in 2018 was more difficult.

“The challenge was to find it in this year’s budget,” Haak said. “But that’s why we have reserves.”

The Town of Whitestown has agreed to contribute $75,000 by providing deputies to three schools in rural districts. The cost-sharing between agencies allowed the funding to pass.

“I don’t know if the impact will be quantifiable with data,” Haak said. “The kids will get used to seeing (the officers) around and feel more comfortable with that presence. It will also keep kids on their toes.”

Knox said having officers in schools will give pause to any person with intent to harm. It also will allow for immediate police response if an incident does occur.

“The biggest aspect is that (having an officer in the school) cuts down on our response time,” Knox said. “The average school shooting is over in five to seven minutes, (according to) the data that we received.”

The next phase of construction has begun at Whitestown Parkway and Indianapolis Road.

Indianapolis Road north of the intersection of County Road 550 is now closed at the new CONSTRUCTION TA Travel Center drive. The posted detour will utilize County Road 550 South from Indianapolis Road to County Road 475 East, County Road 475 East down to County Road 750 South, then back up north to Whitestown Parkway. Westbound Whitestown Parkway, coming from I-65, will be detoured south down Indianapolis Road to County Road 750 South then across to County Road 475 East and back up to Whitestown Parkway.

Eastbound coming toward the site also will use 475 East to 750 South to Indianapolis Road. It is anticipated this phase of construction will last until Aug. 10.

Drivers heading east on 116th Street from Zionsville to Carmel will need to use provided detours, as 116th Street is currently closed between Towne Road and Spring Mill Road for stormwater projects. The projects include the replacement of a bridge just east of Clay Center Road and a culvert over Williams Creek, just west of Ditch Road. Construction is expected to continue through August 15th. The road is open to local traffic only, with a detour using 106th Street.

The Indiana Dept. of Transportation has alerted motorists of the closing of Ind. 47 over I-65 in Boone County. This closure will last through the end of September. INDOT is replacing the deck on the bridge. The detour will utilize U.S. 52 to Ind. 32 to Ind. 39. The full project includes patching and resurfacing I-65 from Lebanon to near Lafayette. The project is scheduled to be completed in October.

Little League officially halts headquarters plan

Zionsville’s Plan Commission met on June 19 at the Zionsville Town Hall. Attorneys representing Pulte Homes, Henke Development Group and Lennar (formerly CalAtlantic) updated the commission on their current projects.

What happened: Matt Price, a Zionsville-based attorney speaking on behalf of Little League International and Pulte Homes, said he received word the week prior that Little League will not be moving forward with the planned headquarters location on a 15-acre property at 8602 E. County Road 500 South in Zionsville. Price said Pulte Homes agreed to re-notify homeowners if it plans to move forward with the development.

What it means: For months leading up to the decision, remonstrators expressed concerns with the Pulte development attached to the project. A group of Zionsville residents launched a petition in early June. Shortly after the petition gained supporters, Little League announced it would look elsewhere for its headquarters. With the most recent announcement, the headquarters is no longer under way at 8602 E. County Road 500 South.

What’s next: Pulte Homes will re-notify the homeowners if it plans to move forward with development on C.R. 500 South.

The Zionsville Local Organizing Committee still hopes to find a home for the Little League headquarters in Boone County.

What happened: Henke Development Group proposed a rezoning of approximately 597 acres from residential zoning to a planned unit development. This is the area formerly known as Holliday Farms, as well as the “Rural Michigan Road Overlay”, referring to the land bordering Michigan Road. Matt Price, a Zionsville-based attorney speaking on behalf of Henke gave an updated proposal to the Holliday Farms planned unit development. The original proposal was not accepted by the Plan Commission. The new proposal passed with all present Plan Commission members in favor.

What it means: The original proposal in May for a planned unit development on the Holliday Farms property at 3900 S. U.S. 421 included a car wash and funeral home, which were eliminated. Other mixed-use development remains in the plan, including a drive-thru restaurant. A letter was prepared

by Henke’s civil engineer that corroborates the agreement to meet Zionsville’s stormwater standards. The property will be equipped with retention for drainage. More than half of the acreage is green space where a golf course will be built.

Henke’s intention is for this to be a golf course community.

“We feel like this proposal is being led by an experienced developer with a good track record,” Price said.

What’s next: As the first phase of development, Henke will begin building the golf course as early as this winter. The course would take all of 2019 to build and be open in 2020. According to Price, it will be a championship course and will be available for professional tournaments.

Making Connections Towns collaborate to extend Big 4 Rail Trail to Lafayette

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville, Whitestown, Thorntown and Lebanon are working together to achieve the goal of connecting the Big 4 Rail Trail from Indianapolis to COVER STORY Lafayette.

The Big 4 Rail Trail refers to the historical Big Four Railroad that traveled through Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis from 1889 to 1930. Zionsville was the first to develop a trail along the rail corridor in the 1990s.

The municipalities have been building out various sections of the corridor for years, but movement toward the bigger goal has increased since 2016.

“The main thing is that the people in Boone County, the various entities, have really started to come on board, now more so than at any other time for this trail system,” said Dan Warkentien, president of the Friends of Boone County Trails nonprofit.

Zionsville

Zionsville officials are working to extend their portion of the trail south to Zionsville Road and north to 800 East.

Parks Director Matt Dickey said the budget for the two extensions, including estimates for land acquisition, design, construction and a possible trailhead at Zionsville Road, is between $600,000 and $700,000. The estimates have been submitted to elected officials as part of the five-year planning process.

“As far as needed funding, it’s just for the council to decide what parts they wish to fund along with the other funding requirements all the other departments may be submitting,” he said.

After reaching 800 East, there will be a half-mile left to connect with Whitestown. Dickey said the strip of land still needs to be purchased, and the owner is unwilling to sell.

Whitestown

Whitestown’s portion of the trail will stretch 2.5 miles when the section going south toward Zionsville is complete.

Parks Director Nathan Messer said the land has already been acquired, so he plans to focus this year on designing the trail and securing funding based on that design.

The corridor between Whitestown and Lebanon is more difficult to tackle. It’s a 3.7-mile piece of land that must be purchased. Messer said it’s a straight shot on the rail corridor, but if the town has to divert the trail’s direction because of unwilling sellers, it becomes longer and more costly.

“We hope to get it done and be able to acquire the land to build through, but there could be some obstacles in the process,” Messer said. “We also want to work with the landowners and if they have concerns about the trail, trying to address those concerns is part of it.”

Other gaps along the trail include Thorntown to Colfax and Colfax to Lafayette. Lebanon’s portion requires lengthy design because the rail corridor travels directly through town.

Warkentein said Lebanon is preparing to pave a half-mile to the western edge of its township. The trail group recently donated 1.5 miles to Coalfax, which will be paved this summer.

Friends of Boone County Trails is working with the four municipalities to encourage Boone County to create a parks board that will take over administrative duties and lead the development of the trail system. Warkentein said the trail group’s goal is to dedicate its time to fundraising for amenities rather than maintaining the trail.

State

Since 2006, The Big 4 Rail Trail has been a State Visionary Trail Route, meaning the state strongly supports the development of the trail system.

Bob Bronson, chief of the State and Community Outdoor Recreation Planning Section within the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources, said the department has awarded five grants to fund different projects along the trail.

“The trail movement since particularly (former Gov. Mitch) Daniels came in has progressed much more actively,” he said.

“It used to be much more controversial.”

Bronson Bronson said community members often worry about litter, home disruption and crime on trails, but those concerns have decreased.

“To me, all the reasons like economic development, health, socialization and brain drain, all the positive things about trails are coming to fruition,” he said.

Presenting to a large assembly of mostly central Indiana business leaders, the young mayor of the recently ordained City of Fishers, Scott Fadness, outlined a vision for his community and that of the larger body of central Indiana. While at once relaxed, even jocular, he is intensely focused on navigating the threats and opportunities with which he is confronted. One is comforted to expect that even if the challenges prove overwhelming, it would not be for any lack of effort, intelligence or intensity on his part.

In examining the population growth, rising real estate values and other affirmations of the positive direction his citizenry enjoys, he admonished the group with his own mantra — namely to invest oneself in “knowing the difference between what you are doing and what’s happening to you.”

Too often, we revel in the success we might encounter in life, claiming that “we own” all that is good and right. We are making it happen. We are “doing” it. Still, as life turns against us and the winds blow blustering cold in our face, we assert all matter of calamity to be “happening” to us.

Surely, sometimes we are correct. Yet, how often did we take credit for a rising tide and refuse blame for a sinking ship?

In our own work, home and family, are we holding ourselves to account for what we can hope to affect and deflecting credit (or blame) for that which we cannot? Is the magic in life not whether we own our actions or not but instead knowing when and how to hold ourselves accountable and when to claim a pass? Fadness reminds us to check not only our hubris but also our humility.

We survived! Twenty-three people, seven nights, one beach house. Compared to previous family vacations, this week ranks pretty high. Here’s why.

HUMOR For starters, the “littles” are getting older. Three of my nieces were drowning victims waiting to happen last year, but this summer they can all sort of swim. And more importantly, they can truly be threatened with, gulp, “No iPad time!”

True, my youngest sister still has two kiddos in diapers, and they cried a lot. I mean a lot. But their antics were more than offset by copious amounts of alcohol.

Wine, beer, rum, vodka, tequila, even a fifth of Jack, were consumed in vast quantities, making the boxes of SPF 70 we went through look like we were wintering in Siberia. And that’s saying something, as most of us are pasty gingers.

There were no severe sunburns, only one fight (the result of an impromptu Dr. Phil session where one of my nieces told her sister she didn’t like her new haircut), and with the exception of another niece projectile vomiting in a rental car on the way to the airport, no illnesses. We enjoyed sandcastle-building, Boogie-Boarding, storm-watching, dominoes, Jeopardy, eating, reading, fishing, original performance, and actual, live, face-to-face, conversation.

At the last night’s dinner, we played HighLow, where everyone shares the best and worst parts of the trip. My dad, who had experienced limited beach time because of a twisted ankle, said it best: “I just like being here with all of you.” Me, too.

Inside the summer ice house Commentary by Ward Degler Today, we buy ice in 10-pound bags at the grocery store. My wife and I drove by the place they make PLAIN TALK it the other day, and it reminded both of us of earlier days when ice came in chunks from the local ice house.

Everything is air-conditioned today, but we didn’t have AC when I was a kid. In fact, the only place in town that did was Finch’s Drug Store. Sometimes when it was blistering outside we would sneak in and sit on the floor under the magazine rack and read the latest comic book. One of us would usually pony up a dime to buy the book before we left so that Mr. Finch wouldn’t get mad at us.

We did our chores in the heat and the sun cooked our brains, but I don’t remember any of us complaining. And when we could feel the soles of our sneakers melting on the pavement, we would head for the ice house.

The ice house was owned by Mr. Ferguson. He had a wagon and a pair of mules.

Summer days he would load his wagon with blocks of ice and then plod through town delivering ice to the folks who still had iceboxes.

We would assemble on our bikes at the top of the hill overlooking the ice house just about the time Mr. Ferguson was

loaded up and ready to roll. When he was safely down the road, we scooted down the hill, parked our bikes out of sight and crawled up the wooden chute into the magical interior of the ice house.

The ice was cut from a local lake in mid-winter. Mr. Ferguson and his boys cut slabs of ice with a giant hand saw and then hauled it to shore with tongs attached to a rope pulled by a tow motor run off the back wheel of Mr. Ferguson’s Model A Ford.

Back at the ice house they rigged the tongs to a pulley and hauled the giant ice slabs up the chute into the dark interior of the ice house. Then they covered the ice with sawdust from the local sawmill.

No matter how hot it was outside, inside the ice house it was cold. Once inside, we’d scrape away the sawdust and chip off generous pieces with our jack knives. Then we’d slide down the chute, find some shade and suck on our treasured ice chips.

Ice houses are no more, of course. And today’s kids will never know the pure pleasure chipping off a piece of ice to cool off when it’s 90 degrees outside.

As an apology to a friend, I sent him a $30 gift card for a breakfast.

We ate together the next HUMOR week. After we finished, the waiter informed us there was still credit remaining.

“You use it,” Jim said before he left.

“How much credit is left?” I asked the waiter.

“The balance is $971.12. That’s a record here. Second place is $13.78.”

“Wait,” I said, “that’s not right. The card was only for $30.”

The manager came over and confirmed I could use the card’s balance.

“Our mistake,” he said, “and we will honor it.”

I told Mary Ellen, and she demanded that I return the card. I wanted other opinions.

First, I emailed my brother in New York.

“Peter, I bought a $30 gift card but they credited me $1,000 by mistake. What should I do?”

Peter’s response: “About what?”

Then I emailed my editor, Heidi.

“Can you help with a situation. I have a $1,000 gift-card from a local breakfast joint, but I only paid for a $30 card.”

Her response: “First, you need a question mark after ‘situation.’ Second, gift card is not hyphenated. Enjoy your free breakfasts.”

Finally, I called my friend, Bob. “Bob, I’m not hurting anyone if I use the card, am I?” “You’d be killing chickens.”

“I’m just eating the eggs.”

“They could have been chickens.”

Bob asked his wife what she would do.

“Cathy agrees with Mary Ellen, 100 percent.”

“Did you tell her what Mary Ellen said?”

“No, why would that matter?”

I did cut up the card. I was looking forward to a three-egg, four-cheese omelet every Sunday for two years, so I’ll be a little down about that — but so will my cholesterol.

Mary Ellen was happy. She said if the café caught their mistake, I’d have egg on my face for using the card. Which was my plan from the beginning.

Pippa Mann addresses CoderDojo students

Indycar driver Pippa Mann spoke at Zionsville Community High TECHNOLOGY School June 17 about the importance of design in technology to help motivate Zionsville CoderDojo students for the July 28 Coder Hackathon and Design Competition.

Mann told the students every product they use is designed by someone, and that form and function are extremely important in product use. As a result, desgin and technology go hand-in-hand.

Jon Gilman, CEO of Clear Software in Zionsville, helped found the Zionsville chapter of CoderDojo in September 2017. CoderDojo has nearly 100 students, ranging in age from 7 to 17. Most are older than 10. The occasion marks the first time the Zionsville students will be involved in the Hackathon. “(The event) was a call-out to get kids interested in the Coder Hackathon and Design Competition that takes place in July,” Gilman said.

The Coder Hackathon is comprised of four separate competitions. Students can build a mobile app with a group of two to six; build a video game with a group of two to six; compete in an individual Python competition; or compete in an individual Scratch competition. Python and Scratch are two of the programming languages taught at the Dojo.

The Zionsville CoderDojo Design Competition is parallel to the Hackathon. Any Zionsville resident 7 to 17 can design a logo for CoderDojo. The winner will receive a cash prize, and the winning logo will be printed on T-shirts and sold on Mann’s website. The winning student keeps the profits. Designs must be submitted by July 13.

“We want to teach kids that even if they are more artistically oriented, they can have a career in the technology industry or any industry where design is important,” Gilman said. “A lot of times, kids growing up that are artistic think the only thing they will do after college is work for a museum. We want to challenge that notion.”

Gentry channels Judy Garland again in Magic Thread Cabaret performances

“Judy, in my mind, was the MUSIC best entertainer to ever live,” Gentry said.

Gentry will perform Garland’s songs during Magic Thread Cabaret’s production of “Katy Gentry is Judy Garland LIVE!” The performances are set for 7:30 p.m. July 6 and 7 and 4 p.m. July 8 at The Cat, 254 Veterans Way, Carmel.

Gentry said the best thing about the 2017 show “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre of Indiana was hearing how others remember Garland in the receiving line after the performances. The Fishers resident was one of three actresses to portray Garland at various stages of her life, sharing a most impressive actress in a lead role/professional theatre division in the 2017 Mitty Awards with Annie Yokum, who played Garland in her middle years and an actress from another show, Karaline Feller. Gentry played Garland at age 38 during her famous 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall.

Gentry had previously played Garland in her 20s in the 2007 ATI production.

“The best things that I remember hearing were, ‘Thank you for bringing Judy back to me. I remember seeing her on her show,’ or, ‘I remember seeing her live,’” Gentry said. “People had tears in their eyes telling me this. There is definitely a connection there between her and her audience.”

Magic Thread Cabaret founders Tom Alvarez and Dustin Klein approached her about starting the cabaret-style theater.

The Magic Thread Cabaret debuted in November 2017.

“They would love to feature you as Judy,” Gentry said. “Over the last few months I think it’s become its own entity.

Of course, it’s a dream for me to feature Judy again.”

She will be accompanied by music director and pianist-composer Klein, bassist Christian Starnes and drummer Greg Wolff.

“I will be dressed as Katy and talking like Katy, but when we feature the songs, Judy will arrive,” Gentry said. “It’s a performance that allows me to share some of my connections with Judy. Then I go into her (personna) and bring her spirit out in the songs.”

Gentry’s favorite Garland song is “Come Rain or Shine.”

“It captures her entire life in one song in my opinion,” Gentry said. “That no matter what happens we’re going to get through this and sort of press on. We’ll end the first act of the show with that. A lot of the songs are taken from the Carnegie Hall show.”

Klein said he wants to accompany the show from the start.

“I was so honored that Katy asked me to music direct, and I actually sing a duet with her as well. I have also always loved this style of music. It’s my thing, for sure,” Klein said. “We thought Katy would be a good fit for our cabaret because we

had seen her in “Beyond the Rainbow” at Actors Theatre in Carmel, and we were blown away by her talent. Our mission is also to spotlight and give a stage to central Indiana singers and performers.”

Gentry said audience members are enjoying the small, intimate setting The Cat offers.

Gentry, who is known by her married name McCord as a teacher, is starting a new position with the early child program in special education at Hamilton Southeastern Schools for the 2018-19 school year. She previously was in special education in Noblesville Schools. Her husband, Greg McCord, teaches at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High.

Artist honors fallen deputy

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com Ellen Rusk didn’t personally know Jacob Pickett. But when she saw a photo of the slain Boone County deputy with his K-9 partner, Brik, she felt like PAINTING she lost a dear friend.

“I never met Deputy Pickett, but when I saw his picture I knew what a sweetheart he was, and he adored Brik,” said Rusk, a Zionsville resident who was profoundly saddened by Pickett’s March 2 shooting death while in the line of duty.

Moved to help in some way, Rusk reached out to local law enforcement and the Pickett family the best way she could -- through her art.

Within a week of his death, Rusk -- an amateur painter -- began work on a portrait of Pickett with his partner, Brik. Working from a photo she saw on TV during the deputy’s funeral, she created an oil painting on a 15-inch by 17-inch Masonite canvas.

Rusk finished the painting in about six weeks. Declaring it her best-ever piece, she gifted copies to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Whitestown Police Dept.

She gave the original to Pickett’s widow, Jennifer Pickett.

ed to receive the unsolicited, unexpected gifts.

“The painting was a beautiful gesture,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown. “You could tell there was a lot of emotion behind creating it, and that Ellen had a true appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice that Deputy Pickett made.”

More than three months after Pickett’s death, Rusk is still moved by his sacrifice.

“I wanted to paint this painting because I adore dogs and I was heartbroken hearing about Deputy Pickett,” Rusk said.

It’s only been two years since 9-yearold Sadie Cohen performed in her first production. It was the THEATER summer of 2016. At the tender age of 7, Cohen played Mary’s Little Lamb in “The Trial of Goldilocks” at Jr. Civic Theatre.

And it was just the beginning.

“This past year has been an exciting year for me,” Cohen said. “I was in the Children’s Chorus of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre. I then went straight on to be one of the King’s Royal Princesses in ‘The King and I’ at Brebeuf Jesuit (Preparatory School). I was also in the advanced class at Jr. Civic for the ‘Variety Hour Show’ this past spring and we just performed ‘Emoji: The Musical.’ I was so excited to sing the Matilda solo in the ‘Revolting Children’ scene.”

Now, she is on stage in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s production of “Annie” as one of the orphans, Ruby. The musical runs through July 15.

“I wanted to be in ‘Annie’ because I like trying new experiences and I thought that it would be fun, and I love the show and the movie,” said Cohen, who was selected as a 15-and-under semifinalist for the July 3-4 CarmelFest Has Talent.

Why does this soon-to-be fourth-grader at West Clay Elementary School spend so much time in theaters?

“I like performing because I love to sing, act and dance and entertain people,” Cohen said. “It makes me happy and I know it makes other people happy, too.”

That’s not to say there aren’t a few challenges along the way – like dancing.

“I’ve had to work hard at the dancing, but it’s been worth it,” she said, adding her favorite part of the show is the song “Hard Knock Life.”

Her performing career also has included three years with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir. But when she’s not on stage, she enjoys arts and crafts, gymnastics, playing piano, swimming and playing with her pets.

“I also love going to museums and doing fun things with my family, like seeing shows or traveling,” Cohen said.

Palatine Hill and its palace Commentary by Don Knebel Most visitors to Rome get to the Colosseum and the Forum, but many overlook nearby Palatine Hill, which not only provides an extraordinary view of both TRAVEL but includes the colorful home of Caesar Augustus.

According to Roman mythology, Palatine Hill, the centermost of Rome’s seven hills, included the cave in which a she-wolf nurtured the infant twins Romulus and Remus.

Romulus later founded Rome on Palatine Hill after killing Remus, who wanted instead to build a city on Aventine Hill. Rome, named for Romulus, expanded onto the surrounding hills. In 31 B.C., after Octavian defeated forces loyal to Mark Antony and Cleopatra, becoming Rome’s unquestioned leader, Romans hailed him as the new Romulus.

Octavian acknowledged the connection, constructing a house on Palatine Hill near a hut where Romulus reportedly once lived. In 27 B.C., the Roman Senate gave Octavian the title “Augustus,” by which he was known when he became the first Roman Emperor.

As emperor, Augustus made the house on Palatine Hill his official residence until his

death in 14 A.D. Although contemporary writers thought the house was too modest for Rome’s powerful emperor, it was sufficiently impressive that the words “palatial” and “palace” come from the house’s Palatine Hill location.

Augustus’ palace was apparently destroyed by fire during the reign of Emperor Nero and its exact location was lost until 1961, when archaeologists discovered the buried house and began excavations and meticulous restorations. The two-story stone house was opened to the public in 2008, highlighting rooms adorned with still-vibrant frescoes. The large Oecus (Banquet) Room and smaller Mask Room display theatrical images, including comedic and tragic masks.

I’m nostalgic for the past. I collect vinyl records and listen to them on my vintage turntable. I live in GRAMMAR GUY a house that was built in 1890. I write a newspaper column, which is something at this point I’ll have to explain to my grandkids from our colony on Mars. I’m a 30-something with the soul of an octogenarian. I have a hard time admitting the past has passed.

The words “past” and “passed” are easier to get mixed up than a set of identical twins on school picture day.

Past can be an adjective, noun, adverb and a preposition. Its meaning almost always refers to something that happened before the present time. For example: In the past, MTV played actual music videos.

Over the past 12 months, an entire year has gone by. The time is a quarter past four. These uses of past all point to a time that happened prior to the present.

Passed is a verb that is the past participle of the word “pass.” It means to move ahead or proceed. For example: In his career, Peyton Manning passed for

539 touchdowns, an NFL record. Congress passed no legislation last week. You get the idea.

Here’s where things get confusing. You could correctly write, “I somehow passed the elephant without seeing him.” You could also correctly write, “I somehow walked past the elephant without seeing him.” The only difference in these two sentences is the word “walked.” As a rule of thumb, use “past” whenever your sentence already includes an active verb like “walked.”

Sometimes “passed” trips us up when it’s not used as an active verb. The local taco restaurant has finally passed its health inspection. Passed doesn’t always indicate literal movement.

Do you care about children and want to make a difference? Would you like to give children the tools they need to keep themselves safe? If so, Chaucie’s Place has the perfect job for you! We are looking for part-time Body Safety Educators to deliver prevention programming for children in grades K-12.

Chaucie’s Place provides child abuse and youth suicide prevention programming to schools and youth serving organizations. The child abuse prevention program presented by Body Safety Educators is delivered in 45-minute to 1-hour sessions in a classroom setting. These presentations are scripted, however interaction with children is encouraged. Comprehensive training will be provided by Chaucie’s Place.

Duties: Present body safety curriculum to children and youth in schools, primarily in Hamilton, Boone and Marion counties, but including Hancock, Hendricks, Madison, and Tipton counties as well. Interact with teachers, school staff, and children in a professional, but caring manner. All presentations are scheduled within normal school hours, generally 8am-3pm during the school year.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in education, counseling, social work, psychology, or a related field preferred; or a combination of experience, education, and/or training. Presenters will be paid $15/presentation.

Skills: Ability to work with and interact well with children, good presentation skills, effective communication skills with school representatives.
