DISPATCHES Zionsville ranks fifth — Chamberofcommerce.org recently released a report detailing the best cities to live in for each state.

The comprehensive analysis behind this report looks at cities with populations of more than 25,000 and covers five essential factors: employment, housing, quality of life, education and health. More than 2,500 cities were examined and given rankings on a per-state basis. In Indiana, Zionsville ranked fifth, behind Bloomington, Carmel, Fishers and Westfield.

Gonzalez named to dean’s list — Mackenzie Gonzalez of Zionsville has been named to the Deans’ List/Explore Center List of Distinguished Students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for the spring semester of the 2018-19 academic year. Gonzalez is a freshman English major.

Luciani named to dean’s list – Sarah Luciani, Zionsville, was one of more than 1,900 students from Saginaw Valley State University who earned a spot on the winter 2019 semester Deans’ List.

Zionsville student receives scholarship — Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana recently awarded $5,000 scholarships to 20 students around the state. Zionsville Community High School student William Schrepferman was one of the recipients. This is the 11th year the charity has been able to provide scholarships to students with outstanding academic achievements.

New tech fights lung cancer — New robotic technology holds great promise in fighting lung cancer and is being used to treat patients at Franciscan Health Cancer Center in Indianapolis. The innovation, Auris Health Monarch Platform, is used to view the inside of lungs and obtain a tissue sample for biopsy. The system integrates the latest advancements in technology, data science, software and endoscopy. Franciscan Health Cancer Center is the only hospital in the state to deploy the robotic platform.

Pedestrian and bikeways surveys —The Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization is in the process of updating its regional bikeways and pedestrian plans for Central Indiana and is looking for feedback with two surveys regarding each plan. ZPC approves senior-living facility

The commission approved a petition to allow construction of two warehousing and distribution buildings at 5190 S. Ind. 267 that will be approximately 187,971 square feet in what is zoned as a light industry district.

The proposed site plan calls for all loading docks and all truck docks positioned between the two buildings to have a 50yard buffer area separating the site from residential homes. The buildings will be 42 feet high, and the accompanying lighting will be 20 feet high with downward lighting, in accordance to town requirements for buildings near residential properties.

will continue to help the drainage issue in the area. Representatives assured their site plan accounted for such concerns.

The commission also approved a petition for a development plan amendment to allow for the addition of a three-story senior living facility in the interior of Hoosier Village, a senior living community, in what is zoned as a special use district.

The development amendment is a move the retirement campus had anticipated since the initial development plan in 2011.

The facility will contain 80 living units and be approximately 118,000 square feet at the center of the 6.4-acre campus. The site also will include an additional 100 parking spaces.

Harder, Broadwater excel in competition

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Paige Harder was doubly blessed as she found herself in the final five in the Miss Indiana competition ACHIEVEMENT for the second consecutive year.

“I felt overwhelmed by God placing me here this week with these girls,” Harder said. “Just the opportunity to be there was such a blessing and such a privilege. I’m just grateful to God.” Harder, a 2015 Zionsville Community High School graduate, was third runner-up in the June 15 Miss Indiana competition at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

Tiarra Taylor of New Albany was crowned Miss Indiana and will advance to the Miss America competition. In the Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen competition, Olivia Broadwater, who will be a ZCHS senior in August, was first runner-up.

Harder, whose parents now live in Carmel, was the Miss Indiana second runner-up in 2018.

For Harder, the relationships she made was the most special part of the week, which culminated with the finals.

“These girls are so intentional with one another, lifting each up, encouraging each other, praying with each other,” Harder said.

“It’s been incredible to get to know girls from all walks of life and spend time with them.”

Harder, who plays piano, won the Edward Poe Instrumental Scholarship. She earned $1,500 for placing fourth. A Taylor University graduate with a degree in exercise science, she plans to become a nurse practitioner.

Olivia Broadwater finished second in the Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen competition.

“We’ll see what God has in store,” Harder said of possibly competing in Miss Indiana again.

Broadwater advanced to the competition by winning the Miss Fall Festival competition.

Broadwater, who earned a $1,000 scholarship for finishing second, won the interview award for her group and a preliminary talent award for her performance singing “Never Enough.” She also sang the song at the final competition.

Broadwater said she was happy for the winner, Hadley Abram of Bloomington, who she became close with during the week.

Evelyn Harrison, who will be a Carmel High School senior in August, was one of the 11 semifinalists in the teen competition.

Samantha Robbins, a 2016 ZCHS graduate who was competing in her fourth Miss Indiana competition, won the Hoosier Spirit Award, which includes a $500 scholarship.

Pantry encourages reading

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Reading aloud to children boosts their vocabularies, language development, sound awareness and letter-recognition BOOKS abilities, according to the American Psychological Association.

The Book Fairy Pantry project works to provide books to food pantries like the Zionsville Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.

It’s a grassroots family literacy movement created by Pam Leo, author of “Connection Parenting.”

“I had heard about the Book Fairy Pantry Project on ‘Read Aloud Revival’ podcast,” said Emily Duhn, a Zionsville resident. “I just thought it was a beautiful project and wanted to get involved. I started contacting pantries in the area.”

Duhn was then connected with Marty DuRall, who volunteered at ZPCFS. “I was already going out to thrift stores and buying books to give out at the pantry,” DuRall said. “But it was a smaller, oneperson-type show.”

The two teamed in January to increase the number of books given away. The pantry now has a cart with an aquarium theme

to hold the books.

“The pantry is open on Thursdays and Fridays,” Duhn said. “Marty will be there, and when she sees a child, she offers them a book to take home and keep. Or she might ask an adult if they have children in their home they can read to and offer them a book.”

The goal is to get books into the hands of parents and children who might not otherwise be able to afford them.

Wit and wisdom from Abe Martin Commentary by Ward Degler

I was cleaning out some files the other day and stumbled up on one I had labeled “Wit and Wisdom.” It conPLAIN TALK tained a half-dozen pages of one-liners by Frank McKinney Hubbard. Hubbard himself claimed to have gotten them from a Brown County hillbilly by the name of Abe Martin.

Some of you may remember “Abe Martin” as a daily comic strip in the Indianapolis News. Hubbard lived at a time when a cartoonist could point out a man’s foibles without belittling him or declaring war on his tribe.

“Abe Martin” first showed up in our local paper in 1904 and continued to amuse and irk folks until Hubbard’s death in 1930. By that time, the cartoon was printed in some 300 newspapers nationwide. I think the News continued to re-run the cartoon until it ceased publication in 1999.

Without naming names or starting political fires, “Abe Martin” exposed the idiosyncrasies of human behavior in a way that had everyone looking in the mirror to see if the day’s taunt was personal.

As an example, Abe pointed out that, “We’d all like to vote for the best man, but he’s never a candidate.” He also showed us that, “Some folks can look so busy doing nothing, that they seem indispensable.”

Then, he added, “Honesty pays, but not enough to suit some people.”

A few of my favorites, as true today as they were then: • “A man who owns his home is always just coming out of the hardware store.”

• “Boys will be boys, and so will a lot of middle-aged men.”

• There “isn’t much to see in a small town, but what you hear makes up for it.”

• “It’s hard to tell what does bring happiness, since both poverty and wealth have failed.”

• “It’s going to be fun to see how long the meek can keep the earth once they’d inherited it.”

• There were some others in the file that probably didn’t come from “Abe Martin.” Someone said, “Life isn’t fair, but it’s better than the alternative.” And this, “Don’t take yourself so seriously.

No one else does.” And, “Make peace with your past so it doesn’t spoil the present.”

• I also jotted down these odd factoids: • “There are at least six people in the world that look exactly like you and there’s a 9 percent chance you will meet at least one of them.”

• “A person’s height is determined by their father, their weight is determined by their mother.”

• “Stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve razor blades.” Interestingly, so are most soft drinks.

And, a final word from “Abe Martin:” “Live so you can at least get the benefit of the doubt.”

Boone County Sheriff’s Office adds two bloodhounds to K-9 team for search and rescue

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Dogs are renowned for their excellent senses of smell, and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office is using that trait to its advantage with the addition of two COVER STORY bloodhounds to its K-9 team.

BCSO Sgt. Ryan Musgrave said the idea to get the bloodhounds was inspired by Deputy Jake Pickett, a BCSO K-9 officer killed in the line of duty in March 2018.

“The reason we got the bloodhounds was to expand on Jake’s idea of an elite K-9 program,” Musgrave said. “He wanted to be able to provide as much help for the public as he could. He was very passionate and dedicated to make it what he thought was very beneficial to the public, so when Jake passed, we got a lot of support from the public, which allowed us to expand our K-9 program.”

Musgrave said when the department began researching bloodhounds for search and rescue, a Lebanon citizen recommended Find-M’ Friends, a Florida organization that promotes the benefits of bloodhounds and trains them to be placed with law enforcement agencies.

“They train their dogs and then donate them to police departments,” Musgrave said.

BCSO received two bloodhounds, Chase and Makya. Chase

is paired with Musgrave, and Makya is paired with Det. Clint Stewart.

The bloodhounds have already proven their value.

“Det. Stewart was called out to a possible suicidal female and located her car in the middle of the county. It was unoccupied and she was believed to be in danger,” Musgrave said. “He was able to get her scent from the door handle of the vehicle when she shut the car door, and then tracked her a quarter of a mile and found her underneath a bush.”

Musgrave said the woman had taken some pills. She survived but might have died if not for the help of the K-9, Musgrave said.

“They’re very affectionate animals,” said BCSO Sgt. Ryan Musgrave, the K-9 handler for Chase. “It gives us that buffer between citizens and police because bloodhounds are so affectionate. They just want to cuddle and kiss anybody. (The public is) blown away by how friendly the dogs are.”

“Nobody knew where he went, so they called us there,” Musgrave said. “We were able to get the parents to go home and obtain an article of clothing and they brought it back and we were able to track him from the high school about a mile to a park where he was up on top of a hill, just sitting there.”

Although bloodhounds are often used in search and rescue cases for persons with dementia or Alzheimer’s or missing children, they can be used in criminal cases, too, such as the recent case where a man was found murdered on the Rail Trail in Zionsville. “(The bloodhounds) could even be used in very serious crimes,” Sheriff Mike Nielsen said. “If you want to see exactly where a suspect or victim has been, if you have that scent, you could track that. With technology the way it is today, while (the officer) is tracking, his body-worn camera device keeps track of GPS and you can lay that GPS layer on top of a map and we can see exactly where that dog has taken us. We are very excited about the opportunity that the bloodhound program will bring. Most importantly, I think it will save lives.”

The BCSO has six K-9s: two bloodhounds and four narcotics dogs.

Homework is not a part of the evening ritual and wake-ups are a bit less frenzied. Class projects, final exams, the big game and the epic dance, no longer on the horizon, are all slowly fading in the rearview, never to be seen again.

The events themselves slip into some blur of our collective memories. They become part of the weeks, the months, the years into which we organize ourselves. We adults, every one of us, has some recollection of school days. They revolve around friends, teachers and, hopefully, some smiles. But even as the reminiscences flood in, the details are faded and facts are confused. To help us maintain some order as life rushes by, we rely upon photos and mnemonics to keep it straight.

Dad remembered events by the car he drove at the time something occurred. Each automobile was imbued with special significance and could be recalled in chronological order. Others invest in firsts – first kisses, first cars, first homes and first flat tires. It makes some sense since we humans are prone to remember most under a modicum of distress. There may be nothing more stressful than crossing over from the uninitiated.

Likewise, we may keep a list of lasts – the last time we saw a dear friend, the last chicken dumplings that our grandmother made for us and the last time we laughed until our sides ached. Others? Even so, these firsts and lasts can sneak up on us. For some, this school year was the last, and for others, the first. Should we plan for these or are we better served to just let them happen?

All’s calm on the vacay front Commentary by Danielle Wilson As I begin writing, I can hear our Lab’s stomach seriously gurgling, loudly and often. She just ate, so I’m not sure if everything is about to come back HUMOR up or simply in the digestive process. Reminds me of the old days when I’d try to crunch out a piece during nap time. Would I finish before the rugrats awoke or would my creative flow be blocked by crying and dirty diapers? Time will tell. I may need to cut this short if the dog throw up, but I’m willing to risk it for the biscuit.

I’m pleased to announce that we here at Chez Wilson survived the annual family vacay to the beach, where 26 of us piled into a house for one week. The littlest is 3 and the oldest is 77, but we managed to make memories and keep the shanking to a minimum.

Actually, I don’t recall any fights between cousins, spouses, or my four sisters, which

is really impressive when I think about how much wine was consumed. We had one case of confirmed bronchitis, several painful sunburns and my mom did come precariously close to rumbling with a neighbor group who set up their tent directly in front of ours (and threw fishing lines where the kids were swimming!), but on the whole, it was remarkably relaxing. In fact, the only drama was a live production of “Legally Blonde,” where my 6-year-old niece, in the role of Elle Woods, asked if her toilet-paper boobs were too big. Classic.

Nothing else to report, and I can no longer hear gastro rumblings from The Dog. Life is good.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie A few days back, I forgot our anniversary — our 39th. I remembered the first 38, so my record isn’t bad. Our HUMOR anniversary was Friday, and we had planned to attend the Italian Fest and the Talbot Street Art Fair on Saturday to celebrate.

The actual date totally slipped my mind on Friday. I left the house that morning with no thought of the special day. When I returned home, I found a sweet anniversary card Mary Ellen had left on my desk, but she was left cardless and flowerless and I was obviously brainless. I think you can understand how I made this error.

Saturday’s weather was terrible, but Mary Ellen still wanted to go downtown.

She seemed to be in a good mood, but I sensed I was still in the dog house.

After we parked, she requested a certain eatery (I didn’t particularly like the place, but I was in no position to assert my preference.).

We walked the art fair in a downpour, with only one umbrella.

“It’s OK, Mary Ellen, you use it. I enjoy walking in the rain. It’s romantic,” (It’s actually not and I hate getting wet, but remember, I did space out old No. 39).

On our way home, Mary Ellen asked if we could stop at her favorite antique store.

“Of course,” I said. “I love antique shopping.” I hate it, but I was trying to crawl out of the dog house.

That evening, she asked me to clean the cat’s litter box.

“Wait a second, I never do that. Angel is your cat.”

“No, she’s our cat. Just like we are now celebrating our…”

“I know, I know. Where’s the scooper?”

Saturday finally ended, after I had yielded to every one of Mary Ellen’s whims and desires. To further make up for my memory lapse, I also promised that for our 40th next year we would travel to Barcelona, a place she has always wanted to visit.

Before we fell asleep, she leaned over to kiss me goodnight and whispered, “My birthday is in July. Please let it slip your mind.”

Oak threat in Indiana expands — The Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources has confirmed more than 70 Walmart stores and 18 Rural King stores in the state have received rhododendron plants infected with sudden oak death, a fungal pathogen that kills oak trees. Criminals dial and hang up quickly after the first ring so the recipient doesn’t have time to answer. If the scam goes according to plan, the victim will call back the mysterious number, inadvertently opening up expensive toll charges. Robocalls use the number 222, the nation code of the West African nation Mauritania. Hitting “ignore” on phone calls from foreign sources is an easy way to avoid robocalls, but not all scams are so obvious.

County rallies around ALS victim

By Maria Cook news@currentzionsville.com In December 2018, after a 19-year career with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Det. Sam Scott was diagGIVING BACK nosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a progressive, fatal neurological disease.

Scott retired May 10. But according to a recent press release, he and his family have vowed to “stay in the fight” when it comes to participating in studies and raising funds for ALS research. The Boone County community also has stepped up to help, with raising funds for ALS research and raising money for the Scott family.

“Myself, Rachel and the entire Scott Family are a team,” Scott stated. “Our team moto is ‘Stay in the Fight.’ We will deal with this monster called ALS. We will continue to research, study and fight … A cure may not be in my lifetime, but if I can contribute to a cure in the future for this terrible disease, that is what I will do.”

Scott is donating blood for ALS research and participating in a clinical trial for future ALS medication. On June 15, Warthogs Motorcycle Club conducted a fundraiser for the Scott family in Lebanon. On June 19, El Mason Mexican Restaurant in Lebanon donated 10 percent of its sales to the Scott family.

With craft beer and local breweries on the rise, here’s a brief guide to some of the best breweries — and what they offer — in Hamilton County.

Union Brewing Company

Address: 622 S Range Line Rd., Carmel Hours: Noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 4 to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and noon to 1 a.m. Saturday Best beer: Java Diffie Review: I typically am not a dark beer drinker, but this collaboration between Union Brewing Company and Java Coffeehouse really hit my taste buds right. Union Brewing Company serves cask beers, which means the beer’s carbonation occurs naturally. The beer is stored in a cask with sugar, which the beer yeast consumes and then turns the product into a carbonated brew. Cask-brewed beers have a creamier mouthfeel and not as much bite from the carbonation. Since UBC’s brews are unique, I suggest ordering a flight so you can try several at a time. UBC’s samples are sold separately, at $2.50 each, and are 5 oz. pours. I sampled the Java Diffie (my favorite), the Triple Zeroes (very dry, but delicious), Under the Table (a Beligan strong beer, which owner Nathan Doyle describes as “big and boozy”) and Fred’s Red Ale. Upland Carmel Tap House

Best beer: Champagne Velvet, a pilsner.

Review: Upland’s best deal is definitely its flight of seven 6 oz. beers for $9.95.

Five are from Upland’s year-round menu: Dragonfly IPA, Upland Wheat, Champagne Velvet, Campside Pale Ale and Bad Elmer’s Porter. The person ordering gets to pick the other two from the seasonal menu. If it’s available, definitely check out the Latitude Adjustment. Upland has a quiet, beautiful patio that is the best environment to enjoy its excellent beers.

The Center for the Performing Arts has announced the upcoming season for its Peanut Butter & Jam series, which introduces children ages 1 to 7 to the performing arts.

Tickets are on sale for the 2019-20 season of monthly performances, which take place 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Saturday mornings in the Palladium and other Center venues. The casual presentations feature family friendly Indiana artists and provide interactive opportunities that engage children in the performance.

Admission is $10 per child, which includes free admission for two adults, making PB & J a convenient low-cost outing for parents or grandparents. Tickets are available through the Palladium Box Office at 317-843-3800.

The Great Theatre of Ephesus Commentary by Don Knebel A dramatic confrontation reported in the New Testament occurred inside a Roman theater in Ephesus. That colossal theater is TRAVEL still in service today.

Ephesus, on the west coast of what is now Turkey, was founded by Greek colonists from across the Aegean Sea in the 10th century B.C. By the third century B.C., the city was famous for the nearby temple of Artemis, an important fertility goddess. Featuring 127 ionic columns and covering 1.6 acres, the temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. When the Romans took control of Ephesus in the first century B.C., they made it the capital of the Province of Asia. They reassociated the temple with their goddess Diana and greatly expanded a Greek theater built into a hillside on the north side of the city, creating a seating capacity of 25,000. By the first century A.D., the population of Ephesus was as high as 250,000.

According to the Book of Acts, Paul went to Ephesus in about 54 A.D. Local silversmiths

selling miniature representations of the temple complained that Paul’s teachings about Jesus were endangering their livelihoods by suggesting that Artemis/Diana was not a real god.

Residents responded by dragging Paul’s traveling companions into the Great Theatre, where a shouting mob menaced them. The melee ended and the men were released when the city clerk demanded that the silversmiths pursue their grievances in court, warning that they could be charged with provoking a riot. By the time Paul left Ephesus in 56 A.D., the city was home to an important early church.

Christian vigilantes destroyed the temple of Artemis/Diana in 401 A.D. after Roman Emperor Theodosius I had outlawed paganism. But the Great Theatre, with its three-story stage house, has survived and is occasionally used for performances, including one by Elton John in 2001.

Cliff from Wilmington points out how I recently wrote that I was GRAMMAR GUY “raised in Oklahoma.”

First of all, thanks for not making some sort of joke about how Okies don’t know anything about grammar. After all, it’s a statewide mandate that all Oklahomans love our papaws and grammers (especially her synonym rolls). Cliff takes issue that I chose the word “raised” instead of “reared.” Let’s talk about raised and reared, shall we?

There’s an old grammar axiom that goes something like this: Animals are raised; humans are reared. This is based on the definition of “raise” as to grow or breed, while “rear” means something more like “taking care” of something and “assist something to maturity.” On paper, that makes sense. Case closed, right?

Not so fast! According to the AP Stylebook, “Only humans may be reared. All living things, including humans, may be raised.”

That’s a horse of a slightly different color. It allows “raised” to be applied to humans. Is the AP Stylebook the judge, jury and executioner on the subject? Well, technically, it’s the standard for newspaper writing, so — yeah, kind of. But let’s let popular opinion be the jury, shall we?

word and phrase usage in books through time. When I searched both “rear children” and “raise children,” I came away with some fascinating findings. Yes, “rear children” was the more popular phrase back in the day. However, around the mid-1960s, “raise children” overtook “rear children,” and continues its steady march in popularity to the present day. At this point, to “raise children” appears about three times more frequently in books than to “rear children.”

So, it seems that “reared” in Oklahoma is probably the precisely correct term, although, according to the AP as well as the court of popular opinion, “raised” is the normal thing to say. Here’s where my subjective grammar gavel comes down: Use “reared” in a formal setting; use “raised” for informal use. To me, “reared” sounds like something that happens to your car when the guy behind you doesn’t stop in time.

Just don’t raise hell or kick my rear if you happen to disagree.
