By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com The Boone County Council narrowly approved a justice center project during its June 14 meeting that GOVERNMENT will expand administration offices and jail space at the Boone County Jail, 1905 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon. The council also approved funding for the $59 million project with a local income tax increase.

The vote was 4-3 to raise the tax, a .2 percent increase to the county’s local income tax. The tax will pay down debt service on a $59 million bond to fund the project. The council also voted 4-3 on a resolution acknowledging the need for the project.

During a public hearing prior to the vote, some residents urged the council to approve the tax immediately so costs wouldn’t continue to rise. When the Boone County Commissioners proposed the justice center project 18 months ago, they expected it to cost between $40 million and $45 million.

But the estimate has increased by nearly $20 million since.

Residents also asked the council not to raise taxes amid soaring inflation.

When the $59 million bond for the project ends in 20 years, the tax will sunset.

Twenty percent of the tax will be used for operations, such as utilities or hiring new employees. The remainder will pay the debt service of the jail.

County attorney Bob Clutter, who represents the Boone County Commissioners, said the commissioners opted for a build-operate-transfer contract. Clutter said the BOT Clutter contract is a procurement method different than the usual design-bidbuild contract where costs can increase.

“The unique thing about the BOT process is it’s a fixed cost,” he said. “There will be no change orders. So, once we decide on an exact cost — right now the estimate is just under $59 million — bonds will be issued to cover the cost of issuance and pay the debt service but that is a fixed cost.”

The Boone County Council justice center commission released a report in May stating some of the requested additions to the jail weren’t needed. However, not all councilors agreed, and the majority supported the project.

“There is a need for this structure,” council member Don Lamb said. “The way we handle offenders now is totally different than it was 30 years ago (when the jail was built). The processes we ask our employees to accomplish is much different, from administration to record keeping to communications to addictions and mental health.

It’s all very, very different now than it was 30 years ago. A change in the structure is needed for that.”

Lamb said although the project may never be the perfect answer for the county’s needs, it was professionally planned with the intention of making all aspects of the justice center fit together. Some council members said that the entire project wasn’t needed, and more research should be done to pare down the proposal.

“For financial reasons and doing the right

thing, I don’t have a better idea than what’s proposed,” Lamb said.

Council member Jennifer Hostetter said building a new jail was estimated to cost $112.5 million, almost double what the jail expansion costs. She said even if the council didn’t approve Hostetter the project, some expenses would still be required because some of the county’s offices, such as the coroner’s department, probation and community corrections and prosecutor’s office, are at capacity.

“So even if they don’t go out there (to the expansion), we are still stuck with the expenses of finding out where they’re going and what facility they need,” she said.

Council member Aaron Williams, who voted against the proposal, said there was a need to increase administration and jail space, but the proposal didn’t fit the need.

“This is not our money,” Williams he said. “This is the taxpayers’ of Boone County money. At a time when everybody is consistently saying the economy is getting worse, why then would we put an additional burden on our taxpayers?”

HMMPL Foundation to present Diamond Jubilee Book Ball

By Haley Miller news@currentzionsville.com The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library Foundation will host the Diamond Jubilee Book Ball Aug. 20 to celEVENT ebrate 60 years of supporting the library.

The fundraiser, set for 7 to 11 p.m. at the Zionsville library location, will feature live music, games, food and drink and a live auction.

Since its first book ball event in 1962, the foundation has donated more than $1 million in grants to the library, according to a press release from the foundation. Projects have included Wi-Fi installation and bookmobile funding.

In addition to traditional print media, the library offers a wealth of online resources for the Zionsville community, such as audiobooks and newspaper subscriptions.

F.C. Tucker stats — Zionsville experienced yet another month of notable residential real estate activity as homes continued to leave the market faster and sale prices increased. According to F.C. Tucker Co., Zionsville homes stayed on the market nine days, or 225 percent, longer than in May 2021. The average sale price for a home in Zionsville continued to increase to $646,486, a 25.5 percent increase compared to this time last year and, once again, the highest average sale price in the central Indiana region. The average price per square foot for a Zionsville home also increased 11.7 percent, to $205.76.

Angel prints to benefit memorial

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville artist Nancy Noel devoted her life to art and trying to make an impact in children’s lives.

ART Sons Michael and Alex Noel Kosene are committed to honoring their late mother by continuing that mission. Noel died in August 2020 after a battle with cancer.

Michael, an Indianapolis resident, and Alex, a New York resident, keep her studio going with their mother’s friend and business manager, Kathy Pierle.

“We want to keep her legacy going, and my mother had a long history of supporting children with disabilities and tragic events,” said Michael, whose Kosene & Kosene Residential, Inc., is based in Zionsville.

The Noel Studio will present proceeds from any of Noel’s angel prints sold during the month of June to the Robb School Memorial Fund. Nineteen Robb Elementary School students and two teachers were killed May 24 by a gunman in Uvalde, Texas.

Parents shaken by shootings that ‘can happen anytime’

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com In the wake of a mass shooting last month in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 elementary students and two EDUCATION teachers dead, parents across the nation have felt understandably shaken.

In Zionsville, several parents interviewed

by Current expressed confidence that Zionsville Community Schools is doing everything it can to keep students safe, but they still feel a sense of unease about sending their children to school.

“Generally, I feel like my kids are safe at school, but every time there is a mass shooting, I increasingly feel like it is a matter of when — not if — my kids are involved in a mass shooting as some type of victim: one who is killed, physically injured or psychologically traumatized,” said Abbey Chambers, who will have three children in ZCS elementary schools in the coming school year. “I feel like I have to repress my fears and keep myself numb to the reality of the nation’s gun violence crisis, even though it is a crisis that could be addressed with better gun laws.”

Allie Benham’s 1-year-old son isn’t old enough to attend ZCS, but she has already spent time researching the district’s efforts to protect students. As a survivor of a mass shooting in October 2017 in Las Vegas that left 60 people dead and more than 400 injured, Benham is acutely aware of the public’s vulnerability.

“I don’t know that kids (or adults) are truly safe anywhere — grocery stores, movie theaters, schools,” Benham said. “It can happen anytime, anywhere, and it’s the frequency (with which) they’re happening and the sizable loss of life each time that makes me feel more dejected about safety at public school.”

Benham would like to see ZCS add technology that would send live video feeds from each building to police and equip all classrooms with a solid door jam. However, she believes the most impactful way to improve student safety is by tightening gun laws.

“We need universal background checks, restrictions on mentally ill and domestic abusers. Close the private seller loopholes,” Benham said. “The guns are the problem here. Other countries have crime, they have

Public input is next step set for Carpenter Nature Preserve

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Dept. is seeking public input with a survey on the Carpenter Nature Preserve.

Jarod Logsdon, superintendent of parks and PARKS recreation, said the generosity of Jim and Nancy Carpenter has given the parks department the opportunity to acquire a 215-acre parcel and create the largest park and conserved natural space in Zionsville. The Carpenter Nature Preserve will feature trails, protected habitats, boardwalks and serve as the home of a future Zionsville Nature Center.

The parks department will use a variety of funding strategies for the legacy project, and some of those funding options require the Town of Zionsville to own the parcel to be eligible, Logsdon said. The parks and recreation board is considering securing a bond to purchase the land for the nature preserve and use the remaining funds to begin construction design. The Carpenters purchased the land in 2021 and are the temporary landowners. Logsdon said the Carpenters have offered to discount $1.5 million from the appraised price, at a minimum.

“We’re at the point where we need to purchase the land so we can go on with this legacy project,” Logsdon said.

“Once we are the owners, it unlocks multiple grants and allows the foundation to fundraise for particular things on the site and really gets the ball rolling.”

The master plan process began at the beginning of this year.

“We invited the public to review what we found for the planning of the site,” Logsdon said. “We did receive great feedback there.”

More than 1,400 responses were received, Logsdon said.

“But that’s only a small portion,” he said. “Now that we’ve presented this master plan to (the) town council, the parks board and the community, we understand this is going to be a large project and it’s going to need funding mechanisms from all types of varieties. We’re prepared to acquire

those opportunities whenever they come up, whether that is grants, impact fees or fundraising of Zionsville Parks Foundation. All of those opportunities, we’ll definitely capitalize on but a lot of those opportunities require the town to own the land.”

Logsdon said the department wanted to ask the community how it felt about the town securing a $5 million bond to purchase the land.

Logsdon said conserving green space is important as Zionsville continues to grow.

Meyer Najem celebrates 35 years

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Fishers-based Meyer Najem Construction celebrated its 35th anniversary June 4 at Traders MILESTONE Point Creamery in Zionsville. The construction firm primarily serves clients in the health care, municipal, corporate and senior living sectors.

Meyer Co-founders Anthony Najem, Indianapolis, and Karl Meyer, Zionsville, originally met at Purdue University as fraternity brothers in the mid-1980s.

They founded the company in 1987. Since then, Meyer Najem has completed several high-profile projects, including the Nickel Plate Trail, Humane Society for Hamilton County, Crew Carwash’s corporate headquarters and multiple Veterans Affairs outpatient clinics.

Meyer Najem is working on portions of the new IU Health downtown medical campus expansion, among many other projects.

“When we started the company, it was really based on a trusted friendship between Karl and I, which has led to what I will call a successful 35 years of being in the general construction business,” Najem said. “Part of what our vision was, was to execute a company that was very polished

and approached the delivery of construction in more of a professional way.”

Meyer said he’s most proud of the environment the company has created for its employees.

“It’s been really a great ride, needless to say,” Meyer said. “I think the thing I’m most proud of is that we have created an environment that people feel welcome and appreciated and they can grow and Najem expand in their professional careers. We have some people that have been with us for their entire career.”

Looking ahead, Najem and Meyer want to continue mentoring the company’s young executive team.

“I’m really excited to see where they want to take it the next 35 years,” Meyer said. “We want to help the next generation executive team develop their vision and execute on that. It is going to be really exciting.”

Meyer and Najem started their company by renting space in Marion County. They moved the business to Fishers in 1997 and then constructed the company’s headquarters at 11787 Lantern Rd., Fishers, in 2014.

On March 17, 2022, our dad was called home to begin his eternal life free of pain and illness.

What he left behind was a family who loved him, friends that will miss him and a legacy of memories that we can never forget.

One of his items for which we are seeking a new home is his car that he cherished.

He owned a 2011 Cadillac DTS which was his pride and joy. Having grown up and raised his family in a town dominated by General Motors, his goal was to “Climb the Ladder” as he would say regarding the GM family of cars. In the 1960s, he kept the garage occupied with Chevys and Pontiacs. In 1973, he graduated to Oldsmobiles, and they dominated the rest of the ‘70s. Always, he kept his eye on the Cadillac one day being the ultimate prize. Then, in 1985 he made it to the top when he was able to buy a used 1982 Eldorado. From that day forward, the only car he steered was a Cadillac.

He liked the big ones, primarily Sedan Deville because, “You are always safer in a big car.”

He liked to run them through car washes regularly because “A clean car always seems to run better.”

We have had his 2011 DTS Sedan checked out by a master technician and a local tire store in Carmel.

Both said that this would be a good used car for anyone looking for size and a little old-school styling.

Foundation Fighting Blindness conducts fundraiser

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com Westfield resident Rick Poplin learned he was going deaf and blind at age 35 when he was diagnosed with Usher EVENT syndrome Type 2.

Usher syndrome is a condition characterized by partial or total hearing and vision loss that worsens over time.

Now 43, Poplin no longer drives. Everyday tasks are more difficult. But he is using his experience to help others as resource chair of the Foundation Fighting Blindness Indianapolis Chapter.

“My whole world was rocked,” he said.

“I wanted to find out current research and stuff like that and I couldn’t really find it from my doctor. Some of the in-the-trenches stuff you can never find. That’s what got me connected to the Foundation. It’s an opportunity to speak to people all over the world.”

Foundation Fighting Blindness was founded in 1971. The Indianapolis chapter was established last year. The foundation’s goal is to drive the research that would lead to preventions, treatments and vision res-

toration for the spectrum of degenerative retinal diseases. “(Researchers) are isolating the genes and finding cures or ways to bring light back into people’s dark worlds,” Poplin said.

“It is really nice to see that. For me, (seeing the research) was big because as a person,

as a patient who is already suffering from a degenerative retinal disease with no cure, it’s comforting.”

The Indianapolis chapter will conduct its inaugural fundraiser, Birdies Fore the Blind, June 30 at Ironwood Golf Club in Fishers.

The event will raise money for the chapter and its initiatives.

Poplin said before his diagnosis, he was extremely active and enjoyed playing basksetball.

He hasn’t driven a vehicle in eight years since his diagnosis.

“So, that’s kind of a bummer,” he said.

“Day to day, I have my family, my seeing-eye people. They really do a good job supporting

me and getting me where I need to go. I move forward just like any other person.

I have bruises and cuts all over my shins from running into things. I don’t have peripheral vision. It’s like looking through a straw.”

Foundation Fighting Blindness Indianapolis chapter President Angie Kirchoff said community is very important for people with vision loss. Kirchoff was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited degenerative disease, at age 32. Now 59, she’s starting to experience the effects of her disease. She was paired with Abbie, a black Lab guide dog, in 2021.

“My interest in the foundation is to try and find a cure for this disease,” she said.

“The foundation is the world’s leading driving influence behind research and funding for clinical trials to find cures for various types of retinal diseases.”

Kirchoff was asked by the Foundation Fighting Blindness engagement manager in Chicago if she would serve as president of the new Indianapolis chapter. Kirchoff immediately said yes.

“Our biggest mission is to reach out to this area to those who are affected by retinal disease and provide support,” she said. “We are at the forefront of research and know what type of clinical research is being done for them. Our ultimate goal is to provide a mentor relationship for them, help them find resources in the area that can help them and also give them a source to go to for genetic testing.”

Alexander S. Wrona of Zionsville, Indiana passed away on June 3, 2022 at the age of 67. He battled pancreatic cancer for 7 years and never gave up.

He was born May 25, 1955 in East Chicago, IN, to the late Alexander S. and Rose P. Wrona.

Alex was passionate about football and played defensive back at Butler University.

He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

After graduation, he began his career at Roadway Express where he became a Terminal Operations Manager in Lebanon and Lafayette, IN. His next career began when he started and retired from his own company TF Logistics.

Alex loved many things – sports, travel, beaches, parties, golf; by far his greatest love was his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Cinda Lou Wrona; sons Stephen Wrona (Cara) and Eric Wrona (Yasmin); grandchildren Hudson and MaryRose Wrona; 5 nieces; and 2 nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and both brothers Jeff and Mike Wrona.

Nonprofits’ partnership benefits people with intellectual and developmental disabilities

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com As a parent of a son with intellectual/development disabilities, Tom Easterday — a longtime Special Olympics coach — is committed to helping people with IDD live full lives.

Easterday is president of Independent Living for Adults with Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities, or ILADD, Inc. “It’s a not-for-profit that my wife Deb and I and a group of other parents of individuals with disabilities, and also a lot of individuals that have a passion of working with people with disabilities, helped create in October 2019,” said Easterday, a longtime Zionsville resident.

ILADD, Inc. recently received a donation of 8 acres of property on Whitestown Parkway near State Route 267 in Zionsville from The Sunshine Society to be used for classes, meetings, social events and other activities benefitting adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities in central Indiana. The property features a building known as the Sunshine Barn that The Sunshine Society, through its Sunshine Social Club, had used primarily for social events for adults with IDD since 2014.

“The Sunshine Barn will be very helpful as far as the independent-living skills classes, such as the relationships classes and money matters classes can be taught there,” Easterday said. “It’s going to require some upgrades but not significant.”

Easterday hopes it will be completed by end of this month.

Since its formation, ILADD’s programs have grown to serve approximately 70 adults with IDD through its independent living classes and social outings. There is a club for books, hiking and games.

“Game nights at Amore Pizza (in Zionsville) are a lot of fun. We’ve had as many as 27 adults with IDD show up on one night,” Easterday said.

ILADD recently launched a Community Service Club. ILADD also offers informational seminars and networking opportunities for self-advocates, families, guardians, caregivers and the public. With the addition of The Sunshine Society property, Easterday said ILADD will have a versatile venue where it can host some of the activities and expand its services to more adults with IDD. Easterday’s son, Matthew, 34, lives at home but takes the independent living classes.

“We are hoping someday he can live on his own,” Easterday said of his son, who works at Kroger and Goodwill.

Easterday has coached Special Olympics in Boone County for more than 20 years. He and Deb serve as coaches for the track and field and cross country team for Boone County.

Easterday previously coached softball, basketball and bowling.

Several years ago, Easterday said there was a Special Olympics athlete whose grandfather regularly brought him to softball practice.

“One day someone else brought him to practice,” Easterday said. “I noticed Justin was crying and I asked him what was wrong. He said his grandpa was really sick and probably was going to die.”

Easterday asked him what was going to happen to him, and Justin said he was told he would be put in a group

home on the south side of Indianapolis.

“He had lived his whole life in Lebanon and had all his friends there,” Easterday said.

That had Easterday and other parents thinking if they could find ways to help people with IDD live on their own.

“The trend nationally and here in Indiana is to get away from group homes,” Easterday said. “We want them to live independently and have the same choices everyone else has. We want to make sure they have the opportunity to work like everyone else has to make a living.”

“This is so very important that nothing else matters! Our ends assuredly justify the means. We are smart people.

We have spent some time thinking about this problem. And we know that we have the only correct solution.” So goes the narrative. Agree with us, or those opposing are open to all manner of attack, polite or otherwise. Many imagine that others, with differing points of view, are stupid, evil and deserving of rebuke. It is all so very convenient to dismiss them, to vilify those who are otherwise not villains.

Truly, there are a handful of critical realities where personal space must be allowed. But do we often restrain the behavior of other adults only to force them to conform with our current state of mind? History is littered with tales of our certainty gone wrong. Countless heretics died only to be proven correct only a few years later, small consolation. Still, we collectively tolerate the intolerance.

Social media is rife with the clarion call: This is so important that the rules don’t apply; I’m so important that the rules don’t apply; I’m in such an emotional state that the rules don’t apply.

Even so, isn’t there some value in adhering to a minimum standard? When are we able to suspend social order? How extreme must be the case? Have we slid too deep into the morass when we each decide what we can say to others and not to what we will allow them to say to us? When words are called violence and legislative votes are called murder, how do we confront actual violence and actual murderers? Are they the same thing?

If we find ourselves always on high alert, when do we start ignoring the sounding of the alarm? Are we destined to miss a genuine warning?

Summer is in full swing, and I for one am already doing my darndest to hide from my children. I know, I know — some of you are already screaming, “You’re such a terrible mother!” But really, I’m just being honest, and I think most parents will appreciate my perspective: It’s all fun and games until it’s not, somewhere around mid-June.

Sure, those first couple of weeks are grand. My coeds are home from school, we’re enjoying the laidback vibes of late mornings and no real schedules, and the flighty Indiana weather is finally cooperating. Our six-pack is generally kind to one another, and in the spirit of family reunited, we ignore the irritating idiosyncrasies of each other. But like our usually low Meijer bill, harmony will not last.

Now, all I can do is focus on the noise and the mess and the never-ending loads of laundry. I get swept up in their sibling drama and inevitable boredom and pleas for cash. I can’t get a single moment to myself because someone, somewhere always seems to need me.

Why? Did I not raise you to be independent? Go. Away.

Too soon I find myself longing for August, when my time and my house will once again become my own. When communication with my darling offspring will equate to periodic check-ins via FaceTime. When I can return to an “outof-sight, out-of-mind” mentality and not obsess over the occasional bad choices my young adults will most certainly make. When a half-gallon of milk has a decent chance of expiring in the fridge.

Terrible mother? Probs. But at least I’m honest.

Editor, I am one of the estimated 110,000 Hoosiers currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, and I would like to share a bit of my experience to help others understand this disease.

• It is possible to live well with dementia. Being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is life changing. When in the early stage of the disease, we can still function independently and continue doing the activities we enjoy.

• If you want to know how I am doing, just ask me. I have shared my knowledge and experience with friends and family. Their prayers have helped me live and work through my diagnosis.

Zionsville teen hits all the right notes

By Rick Morwick rick@youarecurrent.com When Adriana Koch applied to join a prestigious national youth orchestra, she did so with zero expectations MUSIC of being selected.

Suffice it to say, the Zionsville teen was more than pleasantly surprised when she made the roster.

“I was actually very surprised,” said Koch, 18, an oboe player who has been selected to perform this summer with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

Assembled by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, the NYO-USA is comprised of the top musicians ages 16 to 19 from across the U.S. Following a July 29 concert at Carnegie Hall, the orchestra — which has musicians from 34 states — will tour Europe, with performances in Amsterdam, Berlin, Naples, Italy, and Lucerne, Switzerland.

Koch, who recently graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Mich., is one of only two Hoosiers selected for the NYO-USA. She applied simply because a teacher suggested she should.

The Interlochen Arts Academy is a pre-professional boarding high school that offers seven arts majors, including music. “(The NYO-USA) was one of those things that you apply just to apply, you don’t actually think you’ll make it,” said Koch, who has played the oboe since fifth grade.

“I applied knowing that only four or five spots were available for my instrument.

That’s four or five high school-aged musicians in the entire United States, so you can understand why I didn’t have high hopes, but things worked out in the end.”

Participation in the orchestra NYO-USA program is entirely free. All travel expenses to New York and Europe, including airfare, hotels, meals, visa costs and additional transportation fees, are covered by the Carnegie organization.

“This is one of the biggest reasons why people apply to the program,” Koch said.

“Not only is it composed of the best musicians across the country, but we get to tour Europe for free.”

Koch, who will double major in computer science and oboe performance at Indiana University in the fall, has always enjoyed music and wanted to play alto saxophone in grade school. But she wound up following her mother’s advice when it was time to actually learn an instrument.

“My mom thought that the ‘smart’ kids played the oboe and that’s what she wanted for me,” said Koch, whose parents are Matt and Yvonne Koch. “I have never been happier about choosing the oboe. I think it was the best decision my mom ever made for me. I can’t imagine my life

without it.”

Although music is important to Koch and has opened many doors for her, she doesn’t plan to make it a career. But she does plan to continue playing, regardless of where her career path leads.

“I hope to become a software engineer and work for a major tech company,” she said. “I love playing the oboe, but computer science stimulates my brain in a different way than music. Music has always been a healthy outlet for me, and I don’t ever see myself stop practicing or playing in an orchestra in my free time.”

Page & Stage Co. has announced its 2022 summer camp, bringing new techniques, materials and productions to Hamilton County and the surrounding area.

Page & Stage Summer Camp is for ages 4 through 18. It is the first and only theater-for-literacy company in Indiana, according to Paul “Spike” Wilson, the theater’s artistic director and camp head.

The camp was set to start June 20 for basic and intermediate levels and began June 13 for advanced campers. All campers participate in public performances July 22 and 23. Enrollment will remain open until June 24. The camp will take place on the grounds of Holy Family Episcopal Church, 11445 Fishers Pointe Blvd., Fishers. Mystery spoof set at Red Barn

“I enjoy the murder mysTHEATER tery genre and it has a comedic spin to it as well,” said McLaughlin, who is directing the production at the Red Barn Summer Theatre. “I enjoy putting those two things together. As an English teacher, there are a lot of references to classic literature and Agatha Christie that I appreciate and enjoy.”

“Murdered to Death” runs June 22 through July 2 at the Frankfort venue.

The show is a spoof of the Agatha Christie whodunit genre set in an English Manor.

“It’s a fun script, a nice mix of mystery and comedy,” said McLaughlin, a Frankfort resident who teaches at Clinton Prairie High School. “I’ve seen it on a stage before and when I saw it, I thought this is a great show I wanted to either direct or be in one day.”

McLaughlin is pulling double duty. McLaughlin, Red Barn’s associate artistic director, is one of the two male leads in the

production of “Deceiving Granny,” which was set to end June 19.

McLaughlin saw the play at Frankfort High School several years ago. Michael Taylor, Red Barn’s artistic director and a Frankfort High School theater teacher, directed the high school production.

Among the performers in the show is Jan McGill, who has performed for 43 seasons with Red Barn. McLaughlin said another performer, Linda Benge, has performed for more than 20 years at the theater. Benge and McLaughlin are Frankfort residents.

Abigail Judy is finding a lot to like about her first Young Artists Program experience with Civic Theatre.

PERFORMANCE “What I love most is getting the opportunity to work with such great directors and meeting new people,” said Judy, who will be a Carmel High School junior in August.

The YAP’s “REVUE!” is set for 6 and 8 p.m.

June 28 at the Studio Theater at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“My favorite number that I’ve learned so far is ‘Holding Out for a Hero,’” Judy said.

“The music is super fun and we do a lot of really great harmonies. The people in this number are super fun to work with and I think it will be one to the best.”

One challenge is learning the numbers because rehearsals didn’t start until earlier this month.

“It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to learn everything and put it all together in such a short amount of time,” she said.

Anne Beck serves as YAP director. Johnna Tavianini is the music director and Kenny Shepard is the director. All three are Ball State University colleagues.

“Kenny and Johnna are a power couple when it comes to putting this show together,” Beck said. “They are both a wealth of knowledge of musical theater songs from all kinds of shows. They always put together an amazing mix of songs people know along with ones not so well known to educate the audience and enlighten us with great material not as well known.

“This year they did it again and Johnna also has put together some fabulous mashups. She is extraordinary at that.”

“So, it is an exciting year for the show chock full of such great talent,” Beck said.

Tavianini said Shepard came up with creative questions for cast members based on some overlying, universal themes that all have to do with being teenagers.

“By using their responses, he crafted a personalized script with the music that we’ve chosen supporting the stories that our cast members are going to share with the audience,” Tavianini said.

This is Tavianini’s second year as music director for “REVUE!” Having only 10 rehearsals is a challenge to learn all the songs and monologues, Shepard said.

“Another challenge, which I love, is making sure each artist’s voice is heard and each story is told authentically,” he said. “All 13 of them answered a long list of questions for me, and I took their experiences about social media, dating, family, friendships, bullying and other topics and wrote a script, often using their words verbatim as monologues.”

A history of Rome’s obelisks Commentary by Don Knebel Today, in the continuing series about Rome, we look at its obelisks, eight of which have connections to TRAVEL three religious traditions.

More than 4,000 years ago, Egyptians began carving obelisks, weighing up to 400 tons and standing up to 150 feet high, from single blocks of granite. Egyptian temples featured two matching obelisks at the entrances, their gradually sloping sides and pyramidal tops symbolizing the divine connection between Egyptian pharaohs and the sun god. When the Romans gained control of Egypt in 30 B.C., they began taking down the obelisks and transporting them on specially built ships to Rome, where they reerected them with an ingenious system of ropes and pulleys. The first obelisk taken to Rome was erected by Emperor Augustus at the center of Circus Maximus, symbolizing the divine connection between Augustus and the Roman gods. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, all but one of the Egyptian obelisks eventually toppled and broke apart.

Beginning in the 16th century, popes restored and moved eight obelisks brought from Egypt and topped them with Christian crosses and symbols of the pope. The best known is the 84-foot-tall obelisk now in St. Peter’s Square, the only one that never toppled. The largest Egyptian obelisk, about 150 feet tall and the last to be brought to Rome, is now located across from the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. Another Egyptian obelisk is now located in Piazza del Rotonda, just outside Rome’s famous domed Pantheon. Others are located in Piazza di

Have you ever crossed paths with a While I’ve never come nose-to-tail with a skunk, I’ve taken notice where one has raised a stink, so to GRAMMAR GUY speak. What gives a skunk its spunk?

I don’t know — but I can tell you all about skunked terms.

Take the word “biweekly,” for example.

Traditionally, biweekly has meant “every two weeks.” Your job may pay you biweekly. Although this is what the word originally meant, people have come to understand “biweekly” to mean “twice a week.”

Biweekly is a classic example of a skunked term, a phrase coined by lexicographer Bryan A. Garner in 2008. A skunked term is a word that becomes tricky to use because it is transitioning from one definition to another. Whether it’s correct or not, the trending usage of biweekly makes it a confusing word to use.

What I’m suggesting is that we hit the pause button on using skunk terms.

Since the words we choose are critical in

making our communication clear, using a word that is transitioning from one definition to another is distracting, if not downright confusing.

Here are some more examples of skunked terms. “Decimate” originally meant taking out one-tenth of an enemy’s army; now it has come to mean totally destroying something. A “factoid” used to be an untrue statement that many believe to be accurate; now it means a small fact.
