Police search for suspects in Karen Drive break-ins

thefts had been reported. The men appeared to be nervous and began walking away from the deputy, who noticed a backpack leaf blower and a new box of baby diapers out of place along the roadway.

The deputy instructed the men to stop, but they fled on foot to a gold Hyundai XG3 and sped off, running a stop sign and heading west on Oak Street. Zionsville police officers caught up to the vehicle as it crashed into the Stonegate subdivision entrance sign.

The suspects fled on foot. Zionsville and Hamilton County K-9 units were called in to help track the suspects, who are believed to have gotten into another vehicle and left the area.

Police said approximately five properties along Karen Drive had been broken into, including vehicles and outbuildings. Anyone with information on the suspects or incident is asked to contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at tips@co.boone.in.us.

Man enjoys work in Antarctica

Volunteers put out fires

Antarctica is full of both beauty and danger. One thing it doesn’t have, however, is the Friendly Tavern and its “best cheeseburger in the USA,” at least acresearch cording to Bruce Tischbein.

The Zionsville resident is spending more than a year working as a heavy equipment operator for a mission support company at McMurdo Station, a U.S. research center.

Tischbein arrived in Antarctica in August 2015. He assists scientists, performs light carpentry work and removes snow from the front of doors to allow access to the buildings, among other tasks.

“I was out of work and wanted to go on an adventure as I’ve never been here,” he said. “I found (this job) online when in Denver.”

Forty-eight other people are on the mission with Tischbein. There are no flights in or out of the area between February and November when temperatures are at their coldest, and they keep in touch with the outside world through the Internet. They have to time getting online just right, as they rely on a satellite that comes by once a day for only a few hours.

When fire threatened a Zionsville resident or business owner in 1921, volunteers were summoned by the telephone operator to the site of the blaze. back in the day A bucket brigade formed at the nearest well pump, and buckets of water were passed from one person to the next to douse the flames. This method was effective mostly in preventing the spread of fire to the next building.

Fire protection took a giant leap forward in 1927 when state law was expanded to allow the town and the surrounding Eagle Township to spend money for firefighting equipment. During that year, for example, the township purchased a chemical tank and 500 hundred feet of hose. By 1930, the town decided to formally establish an official volunteer fire department.

One of the charter members was Maynard Moore, who continued with the fire department until his death (not associated with a fire) in 1972.

Moore was known in town as a dedicated community servant. He served 30 years as town marshal. Other jobs included water-

As for the differences between Zionsville and the South Pole, Tischbein said there is no comparison.

“The most beautiful sight here is the sky,” he said, “The moon comes up once a month and it is spectacular. It’s up for 24 hours for about 10 days, so it’s like the sun shining here.”

Tischbein celebrated his 60th birthday in Antarctica and plans to come back to Zionsville in October.

For his service to the community, Moore was awarded the first Zionsville Jaycee’s Distinguished Award in 1961. He retired as town marshal at the age of 70 in 1967 but continued as fire chief and fulfilled other community services roles.

Kerns to guide Blondes in charity football game

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Shannon Kerns might not be a natural blonde. For that, the light brunette needs a little help from her fundraiser friends at Allure Salon in Zionsville.

But Kerns does happen to be a natural quarterback.

Kerns will be the QB for the Blondes in the annual Alzheimer’s Association Blondes vs. Brunettes Indianapolis flag football game, which will be held at 11:30 a.m. June 25 at Eli Lilly & Co. Colonel Field.

“From a very young age, my dad taught me how to throw a spiral, so I think that’s a big piece of why I’m a quarterback today,” said Kerns, who grew up in Terre Haute. “Growing up through high school, they nicknamed me Shannon the Cannon because I gravitated to that position.”

This is the fourth year Kerns, 38, has played in the game.

Kerns, the Blondes team captain, works out at Fitness Garage in Zionsville, which her boyfriend, Mike Christman, has owned for six years. Christman is the assistant coach of the Blondes team. The

couple lives in Broad Ripple.

Kerns said one of her best friend’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year.

“One of the neat things about playing is that it raises awareness,” Kerns said.

“You start to learn you are much more tied to the cause than maybe you first realized.”

Kerns was originally approached by Blondes head coach Steve Dopka, a friend, to play. Kerns participates in Circle City Athletics’ flag football league.

Christman said he got involved in the charity event when he starting dating Kerns and learned about the game’s mission.

“I had a great aunt who was a very important person to me growing up who had Alzheimer’s disease,” Christman said.

“When Shannon told me about the organization, I got involved for what it meant.

I was a part-time coach last year. In the off-season, I was asked to be an assistant coach, which gives me a lot more involvement in it.”

No classes, no books, no food?

Commentary by Tami Silverman Summer break means higher food insecurity for children across Indiana. Nearly 2,500 kids in Boone County – 21 plain talk percent of its public school students – have reliable access to nutritious meals thanks to free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast programs during the school year. Yet when school ends, many of these young people struggle to get the fuel they need to thrive.

In fact, 15 percent of children and 11 percent of households in Boone County are deemed “food insecure” – a term the U.S. Department of Agriculture defines as a socioeconomic condition of limited or uncertain access to food that supports a healthy life.

Experts say these families often choose between food and utilities, transportation, medical care or even housing. Emily Weikert Bryant with Feeding Indiana’s Hungry says most families they help buy cheaper food, get help from family or friends, or sell their possessions. More than a third even water down food or drinks, including infant formula.

FISH, the Indiana Department of Education and local food banks are teaming up for the

But these food sites need help to operate.

Most food pantries and soup kitchens have limited, if any, paid staff, making volunteers critical. And while organizations appreciate every donated product, they note each item must be sorted and inspected. Monetary donations allow food banks to turn each dollar into multiple meals by buying in bulk.

Those are ways in which we all can help Hoosier kids get the basic nutritional building blocks they need to grow and succeed.

By working to ensure they have access to adequate, healthy food all year round, we can positively impact every child’s physical and mental well-being, academic achievement and future economic productivity.

Alpha Leos donate books

news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club recently donated 64 books to the library at the United Methodist Children’s Home in clubs Lebanon. Members purchased the books through a Youth as Resources grant from the United Way of Central Indiana, which provides funding for young people to develop projects that will make a difference in the community.

The club’s project, Good Reads for Teens, addresses one of the United Way of Central Indiana’s priorities: literacy. Club members selected books that would appeal to teen readers.

“As students who enjoy reading, we wanted to choose books that would encourage other teens to keep reading,” said Lauren Stone, Alpha Leo Club secretary.

Youth at the Children’s Home also have a store where items can be “purchased” with points earned in school. The Leo club also wanted to donate fun items the teens would like to buy. ZALC raised an additional $400 at a bake sale to contribute to its project. Leo members spent an evening shopping together for gift cards, makeup, games and sportswear.

Last month, the Leos traveled to Lebanon to set up a small book fair to display their books and present the school with their donations. Students from the Children’s Home were able to visit the fair and talk to members of the club. Leo members were excited to share some of their favorite books with other teens.

The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club is open to local youth age 12 to 18 years old. The club provides many opportunities to give back to the community while also developing leadership skills. For more, visit zalc.org.

Memorable highway signs Commentary by Ward Degler I have a thing about road signs. Stop signs for example. I cleaned out a warehouse for a guy once and found a plain talk carton of six of them. I gave the last one away several years ago to a college student who wanted something to spruce up his dorm room.

The first stop sign appeared in 1915 in Michigan. It was followed, of course, by the first traffic ticket issued to a motorist for running a stop sign.

The first stop signs were round with black lettering. In 1922 the shape was changed to octagonal. From 1924 to 1954 they were black lettering on yellow backgrounds. Since then, they’ve stuck with white lettering on a red background.

There were other road signs that were part of my growing up years. Burma Shave signs, for instance, once populated roadways in just about every state.

The first Burma Shave signs appeared in 1925 promoting a liniment, which claimed healing powers from the magical Maylay Peninsula.

Unfortunately, nobody took notice until the company switched to a fancy-shmancy new brushless shaving cream. Sales accelerated and were

brisk until the 1950s when bigger, wider, faster highways sprouted across the country and roadside advertising was relegated to billboards. In 1963 the signs were pulled for good.

From one end of U.S. 40 to the other, motorists were treated to an endless series of white diagonal signs with black lettering that read, “Pete’s Café.”

Nothing else, just Pete’s Café. The café itself was a non-descript building in downtown Boonville, Mo. Everybody knew about Pete’s Café but almost nobody knew where it was. I had a very good breakfast there once.

One I always liked was Tractors With Lugs Prohibited. We don’t see them anymore. Years ago, farm tractors had giant cast iron wheels with points called lugs on them. This was not a problem until we started paving our roads.

The lugs quickly tore up the asphalt.

Finally, a few years ago, a cartoon appeared in New Yorker magazine. It showed a series of tombstones that read: “Here lie/the lads/who wrote/the ads for/Burma Shave.”

Zionsville author chronicles husband’s near-death experience in first book

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Jennifer Muszik always thought she would write a book. She just wasn’t sure what the topic would be.

Her story, “An Evcover story eryday Miracle,” came last year, when her husband, Paul, became extremely ill with toxic shock syndrome. TSS, a rare and life-threatening bacterial infection, entered his bloodstream through a wound on his back.

Originally, Paul was diagnosed with shingles Feb. 16, 2015. Three days later, the real culprit was discovered, and Paul was promptly taken to the ER, then the intensive care unit and then put into a medically-induced coma.

“When they told me he wasn’t going to live, I made a choice to focus on God’s ability to heal him, to focus on the positives versus the negatives, and what other people were expecting,” Jennifer said. “They didn’t expect him to make it at all, and if he did, the longterm damage would have been unbelievable.

I remember grabbing my (mother-in-law’s) hands and saying, ‘We are not going to focus on the negatives. I believe it to be true that this isn’t the end.’ So, that’s what we did.”

Throughout the 10 days of Paul’s coma, Jennifer blogged frequently and asked people on social media to pray for her husband’s healing.

“We would ask for really specific prayers, and we would see God moving as he continued to heal Paul,” she said. “The book is really that story. This book is about how all of us can see everyday miracles and how God continues to show up.

He answers those little things, those little prayers, so many times.”

Jennifer said since she blogged throughout Paul’s healing process, the book is almost like live tweeting. “An Everyday Miracle” was self-published through IUniverse, an arm of Penguin Random House, last December.

“Paul read the book, and he knows the story from when he woke up. So by reading the book, he was able to understand the story from when he was put in the coma, and even though he was awake before that, he wasn’t really lucid, so he lost almost two weeks of his life,” Jennifer said. “Reading the book was hard for him. It was hard to feel it from our

perspective as to what happened.”

Paul said he thanked God for his wife and her strength after reading the book.

“It was weird reliving the episode and getting a play-by-play of what went on around me when I was in the coma, but I am so incredibly proud of the way Jenn’s faith carried her through such a difficult time,” Paul said.

“She was so strong and held the whole family together.”

Jennifer said the experience has strengthened the bond between them. Although Paul has stage 3 chronic kidney disease from the TSS, he is able to control that with diet and exercise.

“I think we took our lives for granted. We always thought there would be tomorrow, but something like this happens, and you realize that tomorrow is never guaranteed,” Jennifer said. “I wrote this book to share this amazing story of hope and healing with others. I also wrote the book to share God’s desire to have a personal and intimate relationship with each one of us.”

Involvement is good for you

With all the guns-and-butter news of recent days, we thought we’d turn our attention and yours to something that may prove fulfilling to you. We’re talking about volunteering. Friends of ours, Rollie and Cheri Dick, he the ex-chief financial officer at the former Conseco, and she the former executive director of Civic Theatre, met while volunteering, crafted a wonderful, later-in-life love affair and eventually married. The one-time widower and widow might never had met had it not been for their volunteering efforts. Rollie is fond of saying, “Good things happen to those who volunteer.”

He’s quite correct. While you may not find the love of your life, we encourage you to consider volunteering at one of the many community festivals coming up in celebration of the Fourth of July. It always amazes us, being volunteers ourselves, how everyone pulls together for the cause, whatever it may be, and many come away with a lot of gratification if not newfound friendships. It doesn’t have to be a festival. So many not-for-profits could use a few or more hours of your time through the year. You can help in a number of areas.

It’s ultra-gratifying work, and it feels so good knowing you made a difference. So, don’t be shy; look for opportunities in the community and please consider making the commitment to pay forward as you are able. The whole practice of volunteerism enhances the community in ways many of us cannot fathom.

Shake and don’t bake Commentary by Terry Anker Over time, there have been many descriptors for it. Today, one of the most popular couplets is “helicopter parents.” But, overprotective and excessively involved parents are not a particularly new phenomenon.

Some of us struggle to let go. Perhaps, it is based in an understandable fear of the many dangers of the modern world and our desire to protect our offspring from malady. Perhaps, it comes from the hypercompetitive environment confronting our progeny and our legitimate yearning to give Junior a leg-up. Or, perhaps it stems from an obsessive need for control – after all, if they grow up, they might leave us. Whatever the genesis, a fixation with constant involvement can be destructive for parent and child alike.

To the kids, our love can suffocate, propagating a failure to develop self-reliance and personal responsibility. While the adults become so fully entangled in dance recitals and travel hockey, they fail to attend to their

own interests, careers and marriages. Don’t misunderstand, the parent-child relationship is a sacred one. If parents were universally and appropriately involved in providing for their own children, so many of the world’s problems would naturally resolve.

But to miss a third-grade soccer game or two isn’t grounds to call protective services. It is not about seeing every single step, or even the first step. Instead, isn’t it about walking along side for the ones that follow?

And is a family better served with happy and fulfilled parents rather than ones who, while ever-present, have grown too weary or resentful to find joy in the role?

Every kid is different and demanding of a unique approach. And, they are our first obligation. But once-in-a-while, let someone else make the cookies.

Two weeks ago, Current published a health piece on labor and delivery for firsttime moms. Dr. Ashley Perkins humor provided wonderful advice, but she missed a few nuggets of information that I feel compelled to share. Disclaimer: I am not a physician, but I have played one for 17 years.

1. Throw modesty out the window.

There’s no time to worry about your mommy parts being the main attraction at the freak show called Birth, so just fagettaboudit. You’ll be too busy writhing in pain or cussing out your partner to care that your OB, three med students and a custodian are all discussing your laid-bare hoo-ha.

2. Seriously consider drugs. Lots of them.

And if you still decide on a “natural” birth (Though as my doc used to say, “Unless a baby comes out your nose, all births are natural!”), at least have a Plan B that prominently features federally-controlled narcotics. You can’t predict how your labor will go or how well you will tolerate it, so the best thing you can do is be open-minded about pain control. No offense to warm showers, but after five hours of Pitocin-induced contractions, it might be time to call in the big guns. I prefer the one called Epidural.

3. Prepare yourself for a C-section. The goal here is a healthy baby and a healthy you, not that your customized birth plan be followed to a T. Make peace with this possibility.

4. As soon as your little angel arrives, start pounding the prune juice and caffeine! I actually know a woman who suffered from post-partum constipation so badly that she wound up naked on a tile floor a week out, sobbing for relief from her plugged-up bowels. Labor and delivery (and opiates) wreak havoc on your digestive system; it’s imperative to get things moving as soon as possible. Enlist the help of your nurse, demand Colace, and don’t leave the hospital until you do your doodie.

Sale of Pittman home could suggest mediocre development Editor, A recent article in the IBJ and Current noted that Steve Pittman would no longer be the developer of “The Farm” project here in Zionsville off Michigan and Sycamore Road. Shouldn’t this raise significant concern to the residents and leadership of Zionsville? A lot of residents that attended meetings leading to the zoning for The Farm were moved by the promise that Steve’s brother, Chad, not only lived next to the property being proposed but also would lead the development of the property itself.

We have since learned that Steve will no longer lead the development and – by word of mouth – have heard that the family residence that sits adjacent to The Farm is for sale.

A for sale sign is up on The Farm home here on Oak Street in Zionsville. This only furthers our community’s concern that the original perceived vested interest of a family member living next to the property the family was intending to build would be done in the highest regard

– no one wants to live next to a mediocre development. By Steve announcing his departure and with the sale of the home it further lends (suspicion) to the appearance of Pittmans’ commitment to a high-quality product the rest of us will now have to live next to.

I would recommend that the residents and leadership of Zionsville take pause to reassess the integrity of what’s being proposed.

I hope that we can re-engage with the town leadership and vet any new developer.

I propose starting a Kickstarter fund - I’d be the first to raise $50K – and moving this property to become a park or a future civic center for our community. I am sure the CEO of Marsh supermarkets – which owns two grocery stores within a two-mile radius of the proposed Kroger – would be first in line to match my funds. I commend (councilor Susana) Suarez for her inclination to be suspicious.

Locally grown shrimp debut

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A new vendor at the Zionsville Farmer’s Market has visitors turning heads and wondering whether fresh AGRICULTURE saltwater shrimp are truly from Indiana.

John Padgett combined his farming background with an engineering degree from Purdue to create Sugar Bay, the first shrimp farm in Boone County.

“This aquaculture really tailors to both of those things as far as agriculture and mixing it with mechanical engineering,” said Padgett, born and raised on a Thorntown farm.

“It’s a brand new industry, so some of those concepts aren’t really solidified yet,” he said. “There’s a big opportunity to design new ways to raise the shrimp.”

Padgett was studying engineering at Purdue when Indiana-based RDM Aquaculture became the third privately owned shrimp farm in the United States. He was interested in pursuing his own farm after learning more about the environmental impact of shrimp fishing and farming internationally.

Padgett said overfishing in the wild has resulted in dwindling shrimp stock, and traditional shrimp farming can often be detrimental to the environment when shrimp waste is exhausted into the estuaries, causing an excess of nitrogen. The oxygen in the water will become so depleted it kills the fish in the area.

“It’s similar to fertilizer run off that you have from traditional land farming,” he said.

Sugar Bay’s shrimp are raised in indoor, saltwater tanks across three acres with zero runoff into the environment by regulating the water quality. The shrimp are hatched in Miami and shipped to Indiana at 11 days old. Water parameters are measured daily to ensure the health of the Indiana shrimp.

“It’s very sustainable,” he said. “It’s an ecofriendly message.”

Sugar Bay shrimp will be ready for harvesting in mid-July, but in the meantime Padgett is selling shrimp from RDM at Zionsville, Westfield and Brownsburg farmer’s markets.

Ancho Chile Rubbed Smoked Pork Butt Submitted content courtesy of Omaha Steaks and Family Features Prep time: 1 hour Cook time: 8-10 hours Rest time: 1 hour Total time: 10-12 hours Ingredients: • 1 Omaha Steaks Whole Pork Butt • 2 cups white vinegar • 1/2 cup yellow mustard • 1/2 cup Omaha Steaks Ancho Chile Rub • 4 cups Ancho Chile Smoking Spritzer, divided (recipe below) • 8 cups apple or cherry wood chips, soaked in water Directions: Score top fat so it will melt into pork while smoking and allow more rub to get into meat. Rub pork with white vinegar then rinse with water. Pat dry with clean paper towels.

Rub pork butt with yellow mustard. Rub pork butt with ancho chile rub. Inject pork with 10-12 ounces of Ancho Chile Smoking Spritzer.

Set up smoker with 1 chimney using unlit lump charcoal and 2 chimneys using lit lump charcoal.

Adjust vents in smoker until temperature settles between 225 and 250 F. Place pork butt fat side up, and add a lot of wood chips.

Every half hour, add more wood chips, and spritz pork with smoking spritzer.

After 2 hours, insert remote thermometer probes. Be careful not to let thermometer touch bone to prevent false readings.

After 5 hours, place pork in foil pan and liberally coat with spritzer. Wrap pan tightly with foil.

Continue cooking without adding wood chips or opening smoker until thermometer hits 190 F (for sliced meat) or 200 F (for pulled meat), approximately 8-10 hours total.

Let rest one hour before serving.

was approached by frequent customer and Danny Boy co-owner Kevin Paul to open a second Patrick’s location in the brewery last year, but he said the timing wasn’t right. When Paul approached the two again this spring, the restaurant duo was ready to move forward.

A week after signing the contract, Patrick’s Smokehouse opened, just prior to Memorial Day. “It went well,” Mullen said. “We didn’t run out of food.”

While the brewery is open daily, Patrick’s Smokehouse Kitchen has limited hours 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Food trucks will be on site Mondays when the restaurant is closed.

Patrick’s Smokehouse Kitchen has opened inside Danny Boy Beer Works in the Village of West Clay smoking briskets, pork food shoulders and ribs. This is the second location for the married restaurant duo Beth Dickerson and Patrick Mullen, who also own Zionsville’s Patrick’s Kitchen and Drinks.

Meats are smoked 12 to 18 hours so scheduling is “a little tricky,” said Dickerson. “When it’s gone, it’s gone,” she said of the note on the menu that items from the smoker are available “while supplies last.”

The brewery’s menu was previously pizzafocused but now has shifted to a hybrid of small plates from the Zionsville restaurant’s menu and smokehouse barbecue.

“We wanted people to recognize it if they knew us,” said Dickerson of the menu with the familiar salads, chili and desserts. Barbecue is served with homemade traditional red sauce with Danny Boy beer or yellow sauce mimicking a Carolina vinegar-based sauce.

They used the proceeds from their booth at the Zionsville Farmers Market for a home smoker that is being used in the kitchen with plans to buy a second smoker in the future.

Salt your garden for benefits for production, vegetables Commentary by Noah Herron

Epsom salt can provide many benefits in the home garden. It has been shown to increase flower production, intensify greenness and increase yields with tomatoes, peppers and roses.

It should be used in unison with a well-balanced home fertilizer.

Epsom salt contains hydrated magnesium sulfate.

Magnesium is critical for seed germination and the production of chlorophyll that aids photosynthesis. Magnesium also helps strengthen cell walls and improves plants’ uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur. Sulfur, a key element in plant growth, is critical to production of vitamins, amino acids and enzymes. It also helps increase flavor within some vegetables.

Epsom salt is cheap to buy and easy to apply. I like to use it in a foliar spray, as Epsom salt is highly soluble and absorbs quickly into the plants when applied to the leaves. It’s typical to use 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per one gallon of water. One gallon can be used to spray 3 to 5 plants. So, just increase or decrease depending on amount of plants. The best time to apply is during bloom time and again 10 days later when tiny fruits have developed.

The goal was to create a functional layout with a larger kitchen, a sophisticated material palette, and a single upgraded bathroom.

1. The second, unused bathroom space was utilized for a larger, more open kitchen.

2. The remaining bathroom was reconfigured for maximized efficiency, with updated plumbing and lighting.

3. The sliding patio doors were upgraded to French doors to allow open access and views to the pool area.

4. The upgraded materials included semicustom cabinetry, granite countertops, new pendant lighting, a geometric tile backsplash, brushed nickel hardware, ceiling fans, and wood-look tile flooring.

5. New, recessed can lighting, along with a fresh coat of paint on the walls, ceiling and trim, complete the overall look of the new and improved pool house.

Before Background info: This 1990 Carmel home in the gated Bridlebourne community needed an updated pool house with a more functional, open layout to entertain. They also wanted to upgrade sliding patio doors for better access and views to the pool deck and lake.

Before problems: The existing pool house circulation and layout did not coordinate with how the homeowners use the space. There were two bathrooms, when they really only used and needed one.

The kitchen was also cramped and needed a fresh, sophisticated update for both entertaining and relaxing on a warm, summer day.

Capernaum, then a prosperous fishing village on the northwestern shore of Israel’s Sea of Galilee, was the site of travel many of Jesus’ healing miracles.

Visitors today can stand above a house associated with one of those healings.

Capernaum, the home of four of Jesus’ disciples, including Peter, became the center of Jesus’ ministry after he had been rejected in Nazareth, his home town. When a centurion came to Capernaum, Jesus healed his servant. Despite these and other healings, the Bible reports that residents of Capernaum did not repent as Jesus had expected, so he condemned them (along with residents of Chorazin and Bethsaida) to Hades, the realm of the dead.

Notwithstanding the condemnation, Capernaum continued to prosper. In the late fourth century, an ornate synagogue made of white limestone was erected over the basalt synagogue where Jesus had taught. In the fifth century, Christians built an octagonal church over the ruins of the house long identified as Peter’s. These structures were rediscovered in the late 19th century. In 1990, a memorial to Peter, supposedly suggesting a fishing boat, was perched on eight columns above the remains of Peter’s house and the ancient church. A glass floor enables visitors to see the ruins below. The partially-restored white synagogue, one of the oldest in the world, displays a plaque memorializing its connection with Jesus. The importance of ancient Capernaum to Christians around the world is reflected by a large Orthodox church just east of the ruins.
