Town officials support new DNA sample law

By Christine Fernando news@currentzionsville.com Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a bill June 1 that requires individuals arrested for felonies to submit a DNA sample to law education enforcement. Several officials with Zionsville ties surrounded the governor as he signed the new law because they provided support and feedback throughout the legislative process.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak worked with sponsors of the bill, including Rep. Donna Schaibley, to voice his support. The bill passed the Senate 36-13 April 13 and will take effect statewide Jan. 1, 2018. “(The law) will ensure law enforcement have the tools they need,” Haak stated in a press release. “This is a valuable and long-overdue tool that will make communities in Indiana safer.”

The law has special importance in Zionsville. A DNA sample collected in Ohio allowed the Zionsville Police Dept. to identify and arrest Damoine Wilcoxson, who has been charged in the September 2016 murder of John Clements in the driveway of his Zionsville home. He is awaiting trial for Clements’ murder and other charges and has been held at the Boone County Jail since Oct. 31, 2016.

In the past, Zionsville has relied on other states’ DNA collections. ZPD Chief Robert Knox said Indiana can now contribute to the DNA repository.

“So many more DNA samples will be submitted and available for comparison, so this will be a huge asset to law enforcement in their efforts to solve crimes,” he said.

Knox said he is confident that being able to match DNA samples from crime scenes to those in a repository is essential to solving

difficult cases.

“The likelihood of determining who the suspects are who commit crimes will be increased, making all our citizens safer,” Knox said.

However, opponents of the law, including several Republican senators, claim it is unconstitutional and a violation of protections of privacy and against unreasonable search and seizure. Indiana is the 31st state to pass a law requiring such DNA samples.

The law states that a DNA sample can be removed from the database if the person is acquitted, if felony charges are converted to misdemeanors, if charges are dismissed or if no felony charges are filed within 365 days.

However, opponents worry that the law does not allow for the automatic removal of DNA samples in such cases. Instead, the individual must file a court motion for DNA removal.

Knox said officers are required to explain the right to DNA removal and provide instructions for doing so to an individual before collecting a DNA sample. He said the requirement ensures law enforcement does not infringe on individual rights while collecting samples.

The bill requires those arrested for a felony to submit cheek swabs, fingerprints, photographs or other DNA data to arresting officers after being taken into custody.

As a result, Knox said the law will help keep the community safe while protecting the rights of individuals involved in a crime.

“I feel it will help keep Indiana safe by assisting in the apprehension of criminals,” he said. “(The law) will greatly increase our ability to solve crimes that have been difficult to solve.”

A Pennsylvania man who drove to Zionsville to have sex with a minor in 2015 has been sentenced to more than 19 years in prison. public safety U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt sentenced Sean A. Donnelly, 22, of Ephrata, Penn., June 15 after he pleaded guilty to enticing a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity and possession of child pornography.

Court records state that Donnelly met a 14-year-old girl from Zionsville in an Internet chat room in February 2015.

Their text messages and phone calls became increasingly intimate, and Donnelly asked the victim to share naked pictures of herself, which she did.

Donnelly drove from Pennsylvania to Zionsville July 2, 2015, and had sexual relations with the victim, according to court records. He returned a week later for the same purpose. Zionsville police found Donnelly and the victim in Turkeyfoot Park and took him into custody.

“Young people need to be so careful about social media,” Zionsville Police Dept. Chief Robert Knox said. “There are predators out there and this is that case in point. This bad person is going to be off the street, but there are plenty of others out there.”

Knox said he is grateful for help from the FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, Boone County Prosecutors Office and Silvia’s Place Child Advocacy Center for bringing Donnelly to justice.

Prosecutors said Donnelly must serve 20 years of supervised release after his prison term and pay a $5,000 fine.

A new element is being sown for this year’s annual Gardens of Zionsville Tour.

Along with seven backyards event to tour, the Garden Market will sprout around the vicinity of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center with more than a dozen vendors with items ranging from yard sculptures and wood to pottery and macrame from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“With part of our mission being art, it’s a natural extension of the garden tour,” SullivanMunce Board President Patricia Scott said. “The Garden Market is something that’s core to what we’re already doing.”

“We want to provide educational opportunities,” Scott said. “We’re really trying to connect the community with art, garden and education.”

The seven gardens to tour are spread throughout Zionsville, featuring a shade garden, a Certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat and one with transplants more than 60 years old.

“The gardeners are so excited showing off what they love to do. That, to me, makes the day worthwhile,” said Marsha Webster, who is chairing the event.

Proceeds will benefit SullivanMunce’s mission to make art, history and genealogy programs accessible to the community.

The roundabout is expected to be complete before school resumes in August.

Westfield East 151st Street will close for the construction of a roundabout at Westfield Boulevard. The closure is expected to begin on or after June 19 and last 60 days. Motorists travelling eastbound along East 151st Street will encounter detour routing which will bypass roundabout construction at the new intersection of East 151st Street and Westfield Boulevard between Greyhound Pass and U.S. 31. Target will only be accessible to traffic from the east, so customers approaching from the west will need to utilize the detour route. Eastbound traffic crossing U.S. 31 at 151st Street will need to utilize the detour or approach 151st Street from U.S. 31 north or south.

The Zionsville school board met June 12 to announce principal appointments, approve school calendars and discuss classroom grants.

What happened: Andrew Foreman was announced as principal of Eagle Elementary, and Stacy Smith was announced as principal of Pleasant View Elementary.

Lauren Kersey was announced as the first assistant principal at Boone Meadow Elementary.

What it means: Foreman was most recently assistant principal at Hoosier Foreman Smith Road Elementary in Fishers. He is replacing Christine Squier, who became the district’s director of academic services. Smith was assistant principal at Cherry Tree Elementary in Carmel and will replace Chad Smith, who became principal of Bethesda Christian Academy.

Judge orders partial closure of mobile-home park

More than half the tenants at Zionsville Mobile Home Park are being forced to relocate after a judge public safety ordered parts of it shut down because of what it deemed broken sewage systems.

“The eastern and central sewage systems were failing, causing health concerns for the residents,” Corey Elliott, press secretary for the Indiana attorney general’s office, stated in an email.

But the mobile-home park manager, Laura Lei, denies those claims. She said the septic system is old but not failing and that none of the residents have experienced any health issues or other major problems as a result of sewage problems. If anything, they’re feeling “miserable” and “depressed” from being displaced, she said.

“Everybody is very upset,” Lei said. “They said they have no (drain or sewage) issues and (wonder) why the court ordered them to go.”

Lei said the problems stemmed from three clogged pipes – a problem the homeowners were required to fix but didn’t. She said she hired plumbers who successfully unclogged the drains and that the system is working as it should.

“We fixed the issue,” she said.

But Boone Circuit Court Judge Justin Hunter ruled Jan. 30 that all but 12 of the 31 tenants move out of the park at 9111 E 600 S by April 30. As of early June, some of the tenants required to move were still on the property, according to court documents. Lei said June 15 that she believes all of the tenants but one were gone.

Hunter ordered Jan. 30 that Lei provide

the Indiana State Dept. of Health with “proof that all sewage materials that have discharged from the ground surface under the unoccupied home on lot 6017 has been bagged and hauled to a sanitary landfill and that lime has been applied to the contaminated ground.” The state said it did not receive proof as of June 6 that Lei had met that requirement, but Lei said she cleaned up the site as required.

Court records show that Lei and the mobile-home park have been ordered to pay $279,950 in restitution and that the park is operating without a license. According to the ISDH website, its license expired at the end of 2015.

Lei said she sent in the fee for the license but that the state has been refusing to renew it until the sewage problems are fixed. She said the state is refusing to acknowledge the work she’s done.

Zionsville Director of Communications Amanda Vela said the town is providing financial support to displaced Zionsville Mobile Home Park tenants without the resources to accomplish the relocation of their homes through its public-assistance program.

Lei said the court order required the people to move, not the mobile homes.

She said the park has an innkeeper lien on most of the homes, as their owners are behind on lot rent payments, and she doesn’t believe that the town should have spent approximately $15,000 to help former tenants relocate.

“The people can move out to rent an apartment or another house/home,” she stated in an email. “They don’t have to and shouldn’t have taken their mobile home with them due to the existing innkeeper lien against their mobile homes.”

The money was from a remainder trust set up by longtime Zionsville resident Elton Brooks. “(Elton and Barbara Brooks) were really involved with a lot of different philanthropic organizations,” said Kristi Reynolds, CFBC president and CEO. “Elton, in particular, spent his entire life working to help people understand how to give back philanthropically.”

Elton died in December 2016. His son, Paul Brooks of Zionsville, wrote a letter discussing his father’s generosity that was read at the check presentation.

The money will go toward scholarships for the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy program.

Indy Eleven midfielder Daniel Keller is sharing his soccer skills and knowledge with youngsters. soccer Keller, 25, is serving as the lead coach for the team’s youth summer camps.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to give back to the game,” said Keller, in his third year with Indy Eleven. “When I was younger, I spent my summer going Keller to camps. For me, it was the former Indiana professional team, the Indiana Blast. I would go to Carmel United camps. I remember how much an impact those camps had on my career. To be able to give back and pay it forward to these kids is something I take pride in.”

The Carmel resident has a degree in finance and economics from the University of Louisville.

“At some point, I might venture into the business world,” Keller said. “Soccer is a game I’ll always follow closely, and when I have my own kids someday, I’ll definitely be involved with their teams.”

Keller is running a Carmel Dads Club camp, which started June 19. Keller, a 2010 Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School graduate who grew up in Carmel, redshirted and then played at Louisville from 2011 to 2014.

Keller went from a walk-on to starter at Louisville. He was a Major League Soccer third-round draft selection of the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The camps include instruction and appearances by Indy Eleven players and coaches, a ticket to a 2017 Indy Eleven game and an Indy Eleven Soccer Camp T-shirt.

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com In honor of National Cancer Survivor’s Day June 4, Donna Blackmon hosted a tea party at Serenity in fundraiser Zionsville to benefit her philanthropic efforts through the Power in Purple campaign to fight cancer.

Throughout May and June, 20 women are participating in the American Cancer Society’s Power in Blackmon Purple campaign to raise funds for and awareness of the resources offered by the ACS for cancer patients and families.

Blackmon manages communications and marketing strategies in the Indianapolis Suburban Region for the Women’s, Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Cancer service lines at IU Health. Although she heard about the Power in Purple campaign opportunity through her contacts at work, she was motivated to participate for personal reasons.

Blackmon’s mother died of lung cancer in 2013.

“Just working with the service line I work with and working with the ACS and learning about all of the great programs they offer, it’s one of those things I wish we’d known a little bit more about at the time,” she said. “So that’s kind of been my driving force is to make sure others are

Each candidate has a target goal of $2,500, and the ACS wants to raise $52,500 by the end of the campaign. Candidates also must wear purple every day during the month of June to raise awareness.

“The overall goal would be to erase the pain and suffering of cancer for future generations, which is part of the reason why I hosted the tea party at Serenity,” Blackmon said.

She chose to use a “Mommy & Me” theme to include her two young daughters and their friends. The event included a photo booth, an etiquette lesson from owner Karin Glass, games, crafts, food and tea.

“It was so cute,” Blackmon said. “It just turned out so very well.”

Blackmon is still working to reach her fundraising goal before the campaign’s closing ceremony in July.

Gobbling up turkey talk

When I quit smoking more than four decades ago, I did it cold turkey. I had tried to quit by installments a plain talk couple times, you know, cutting back a little at a time, but quickly learned that didn’t work.

If I’m going to break an addiction, it’s got to be cold turkey.

Recently, I got to wondering if “cold turkey” had some deep secret meaning, perhaps some obscure event in history that might harken back to colonial days and white man’s negotiations with Indians for an allotment of wild turkeys. Maybe the feathered kind of wild turkey traded for the Kickapoo Joy Juice kind that came in a bottle.

Every reference I found, however, had to do with kicking the habit. John Lennon came up with “Cold Turkey” in 1969, a song about breaking free from heroin. In 1971, Hollywood released a movie, “Cold Turkey,” about a small town where every resident gave up smoking to win a $25 million prize.

Sadly, nobody offered me $25 million to give up smoking, but my wife did threaten to kick me out if I didn’t stop smoking in the house. Since it was the middle of winter in Minnesota, quitting was suddenly easier.

Even at the point of origin, cold turkey

meant the sudden, unprepared giving up of something that had you by the throat: opium, heroin, even Kickapoo Joy Juice. The idea was, in the quick meal department, a lunch of cold turkey required neither planning nor preparation.

I also discovered that the phrase “cold shoulder” referred to an icy reception, probably of someone who hadn’t yet gone cold turkey to clear up some nasty habit.

It’s interesting that these days we call someone like that a turkey.

And then there’s “talking turkey,” which translates just about everywhere to engaging in serious negotiations. I did discover some earlier references, however. In the 1800s, talking turkey referred to pleasant conversation over dinner, perhaps Thanksgiving. Turkey definitely is serious business on Thanksgiving.

And back in Colonial times, it really was common practice for settlers to negotiate with neighborhood Indians for food. Presumably, that included wild turkeys. And who knows, maybe even a jug or two of Wild Turkey.

“Don’t geek out when you see somecover story one you really admire,” Franzman said.

“When I went to (the 2016) Olympic Trials, I saw Michael Phelps pass in the halls, and I pretty much lost a heartbeat. I kind of freaked out a little bit.”

Franzman and Tessa Wrightson, who will both be seniors at Zionsville Community High School in August, have qualified to compete in the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials at the Indiana University Natatorium on the IUPUI campus June 27 to July 1.

Although Phelps won’t be in Indianapolis, there will be other standout swimmers, including Olympic gold medalists Ryan Murphy, Nathan Adrian, Katie Ladecky, Lilly King and Simone Manuel.

Franzman will race against Carmel High School rival Drew Kibler, who will be a senior this fall.

In the state high school finals in February, Kibler was first and Franzman second in the 100-meter freestyle in their head-to-head individual meeting. Franzman won the 50 free at state while Kibler won the 200 free.

“I get a good motivation in the back of my brain whenever I go to practice,” Franzman said.

The Olympics Trials in Omaha, Neb., doubled as the National Championships for 2016.

“You have to go into it like you would any other meet,” Franzman said. “I’m going into this preparing like it’s the biggest meet of my life. I do that with every meet, though.

(The Olympics Trials were) a little different because that was the biggest meet of my life.”

Franzman said there might be a small advantage to the National Championships being in Indianapolis.

“It’s a swimming pool, so there is not a huge home-field advantage,” Franzman said. “You can’t hear the crowd when you are under water. But there is that point of, ‘I’ve been here before. I know exactly where I am.’ I’ve been here for five years. It’s not that scary.”

Franzman will compete in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle and the 50 and 100 butterfly.

“I like the 50 free a little bit more than 100, but I still really like the 100 because it’s that pure sprint,” Franzman said.

Wrightson will compete in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke.

“I would love to drop some time, but we’ll see how it goes,” said Wrightson, who finished second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke at the high school state meet in February.

Wrightson has been a part of Zionsville Swim Club for approximately 10 years.

“I’m excited to race because I know there is really good competition there,” Wrightson said. “I’m taking the same approach that it’s any other meet and trying to do my best, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Franzman’s older half-brothers, Aric and Ryan, swam at Brownsburg High School. Aric, a 2008 Brownsburg graduate, swam at the University of Kentucky but had to quit after one season because of a shoulder injury.

“I was really hesitant to start swimming. I didn’t want to be in their shadow, because they did really well,” said Franzman, who transferred from Brownsburg to Zionsville after his freshman year. “But then I thought I’d pick it up.

They taught me how to swim in a competitive fashion. I did nothing with that for five years. I had a guy I didn’t quite like on the team, so I started racing him and it felt really good when I beat him. It didn’t feel good at all when I lost to him, so I wanted to train real hard to beat him.”

Commentary by Terry Anker In any single day, we share thousands of words. We talk them. We type them. We write them. We use these words to communicate, share ideas, and express our needs.

The speaker and the listener are bound to an unwritten contract committed to mutual understanding. The speaker is responsible to form cohesive and complete thoughts, empathetic to how the message is being received and perceived. The listener, for their part, works to ensure that they are asking clarifying questions wherever an understanding gap might exist, and listening intently with a specific goal of receiving the most accurate interpretation of the sender’s message. Over these many thousands of years, we humans have figured out much of how to make this process a successful one. Good.

Yet in our full and rich lives, we have developed more than a bit of shorthand, ever seeking to communicate with less overhead. On smartphones, we use emojis.

With voicemail, some refuse to listen, asking instead for a text from callers. With traditional U.S. mail, many have called it too cumbersome to have much of a future. Even our own brains will fill in words from a sentence where they do not exist. In editing oneself, draft after draft will omit words.

Sentences are nonsensical, but our mind fills in, deceiving us that it all makes sense.

It isn’t until a new, objective reader finds the error that our own perception allows us to see the folly.

If our own understanding of our own thoughts is so strong that it causes us to misperceive the specific words on paper, what else in our lives is not really there – at least as we imagine it to be? How do we find our own blind spots?

Cartoon ‘another cheap shot’ Editor, I wanted to write to lodge a complaint about Tim Campbell’s cartoon published in the June 6 edition of Current in Zionsville.

Perhaps my take on it is wrong, but it seems to me to be yet another cheap shot taken at a candidate that, while she lost, was gracious enough to show up to her opponent’s inauguration and put the country’s interests ahead of her stymied bid for president.

In light of the ongoing investigations and continued revelations about the Republicans’ complicity in laundering money from Russian oligarchs, I question why Hillary (Clinton) continues to be attacked repeatedly by a party that has placed its own self-interest above the interests of

America as a sovereign nation.

I like to think that as a resident of Zionsville, the current crop of Republicans I live around are much more capable of arguing for conservative principles on their own merit, not by shoving their failures off to a boogeywoman of their own making.

Please consider refraining from casting stones while we have someone in office that was put there by the aid of someone who is proud of the fact that he has a Nixon tattoo on his back, amongst plenty of other “colorful” characters.

The Republican party has a (lot) of house-cleaning to do. In 2017, it’s not that woman’s work.

Summer break is finally here, but for whatever reason, I am struggling to find my groove. Nothing is being humor accomplished, yet I feel like I have no free time. When I mentioned as much to my husband, Doo, he replied, “Stop complaining. You have two months of vacation!” Oh. No. He. Did-ent.

And then I realized, Doo doesn’t get it. He thinks just because I’m not teaching every day that I’m sitting at home on my tush eating bonbons. That I spend my hours reading Nora Roberts and downing pina coladas.

No, all I’ve done is go from being a mom who works full time to one who stays at home. And that means carpooling, cleaning and cooking, not to mention managing four teenagers who seem to think noon is an ideal time to awake. It means finally visiting the dentist and the dermatologist and the always intriguing OB/GYN because I never have time during the school year.

It means calling a roofing guy to evict the little bird family that has been squatting in the wall behind my closet for three months.

It means getting the Wilson six-pack whipped into shape after a long winter and spring of doing absolutely nada.

It also means squashing my desire to shave someone’s eyebrows off for not validating my anxiety and inability to settle into a routine. I have to remind myself that Doo is dealing with his own issues and that to him, a summer break would be a welcome respite. Of course, if he actually understood the job requirements of a stay-at-home mom, particularly one whose children are out of school, he might think differently.

Hanging out with ‘Oisk’ Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Last week I had the honor of presenting to Carl Erskine the Heritage Place Award, given to six senior Hoosiers humor for their lifetime service to the Indianapolis community. Carl is a retired banker from Anderson. He also previously pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers, helping the team win the World Series in l955.

Growing up in New York, I often feigned sleeping with a tiny transistor radio hidden under my pillow. I prayed for another no-hitter by Carl (he had two). If you had told that 9-year-old in l955 that Carl Erskine, affectionately known as “Oisk” among Brooklyn faithful, would one day be his golfing partner, he would have thought you were nuts.

My memory of Oct. 4, 1955, is clear. Even then I knew the majesty of those hallowed words: Seventh game of the World Series. This had traditionally been a time for Dodger fans to prepare for the inevitable.

The Yankees had beaten Da Bums, as they were called, in four previous Series games.

I remember our tiny TV with the rabbitears antenna. The black-and-white picture

was quite fitting, because that game was clearly a battle between the forces of good and evil. I perched myself on our wooden coffee table, after pushing it right up to the television. When the Yankees threatened, I retreated to my room until the peril had passed. I still do that during Pacers and Colts games. When Yankee catcher Elston Howard flailed at the final Dodger pitch, I sprang from my perch on the coffee table and let out a scream. The Wolfsie family embraced in a group hug.

The day after the awards dinner, Carl and I played golf. We talked about his son, Jimmy, who was on his way to bowl at the Special Olympics. Carl talked about his wife, Betty, of 70 years.

“Golf is like marriage,” he said. “I’m not always very good at it, but I want to keep doing it for a long time.”

“Still lots of time for both,” I told my 90-year-old boyhood hero. “You’re going into extra innings.”

Big Dave makes way for duo

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com August will mark one year since Syd Latina and Carol Plopper took over Big Dave’s Deli after spending new owners last summer observing and learning the business from Dave Chapman himself.

The women previously worked together in the retail industry. The possibility of buying Big Dave’s had been on their minds the past few years.

When they reached a “fork in the road” with work, Latina said, they decided to do it now or they’d never do it.

“It was either going to completely close or we were going to do it,” said Plopper, a Zionsville resident. “We couldn’t stand the thought of Zionsville without Big Dave’s.”

The new owners’ goal is to preserve the identity and history that Chapman created in his 17 years of ownership.

“We didn’t want to change that much,” Latina said. “We figured if we changed it then it wouldn’t be the same.”

Latina, who lives in Noblesville, always had an interest in smoking meats and butchering. Plopper bakes the muffins and

Latina finds it interesting how business demands change throughout the year, whether it’s an increase in boxed lunches in late May or tenderloins at Christmas.

“It’s fun to see the different interests and the different seasons,” she said.

In the future, Latina and Plopper want to increase the special events side of the business. Although they don’t cater, they produce party trays and boxed lunches.

They also want to grow the meat market, which sells items like ribs, steaks and brisket in addition to Boar’s Head cold cuts.

Chapman is still a frequent presence in the deli.

“This is his baby,” Latina said.

“I think he’s excited to see that we’ve continued on,” Plopper said. “I think he’s excited to see that he can still be a part of it.”

Local Marsh stores sold to Kroger subsidiary — Several Marsh Supermarkets stores will soon be under new ownership after a bidding process took place June 12. This comes after Marsh’s filing of a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection May 11. On June 12, a motion was filed by Marsh in the state of Delaware seeking approval for two bidders to purchase 16 Marsh stores at costs of $16 million and $8 million, respectively. Why umbilical cord stem cells?

Actually, the existence of stem cells was hyscience pothesized over 100 years ago, and scientists and researchers have been actively studying them for more than 30 years. Researchers soon looked for other sources of young and healthy stem cells and found that umbilical cord-derived stem cells do not have these cancerinducing properties. Approximately two years ago, the use of umbilical-cord-blood stem cells was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for clinical application in humans. These cells are thoroughly tested and certified against genetic and infectious diseases.

It has been found that umbilical cord stem cells are immune-neutral, that they do not cause rejection after transfusion.

On June 3, six guests arrived at Joan Carney’s Carmel residence to enjoy a philanthropic dinner party benefiting the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette. The guests won tickets to the dinner party through an auction fundraiser for the museum. They arrived in Carmel from Lafayette in a limo provided by the museum.

Carney, a long-time art collector and former owner of Lilly’s Boutique Gallery in Zionsville, provided a “colorful voyage” that took her guests on a journey through several different exotic backdrops, including Turkey, Greece and Morocco. The dining experience was donated

by Carney to the museum’s auction as a way of showing gratitude for helping her launch her career in the art world several years ago.

A taste of Indian culture will be on display June 25 at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana. culture The Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra, which is translated to Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath, is set to start at 10 a.m. at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana, 3350 N. German Church Rd., Indianapolis.

“It’s the biggest temple in Indiana,” said Smita Patnaik, a Carmel resident who added she is one of many Carmel residents who attend the temple.

Lord Jagannath is a deity worshipped by Hindus.

The Jagannath Association of Indiana and Hindu Temple of Central Indiana host the event, Patnaik said.

The festival originated in Puri in approximately the 12th century.

“Once a year Jagannath comes out and goes on this once-a year trip to his aunt’s place, which is another temple in India,” Patnaik said. “He gives everyone a chance to meet the god. We take the god and we carry him on a chariot. It’s completely open to anyone who wants to do it. We pull the chariot. He stays there nine days and for these days, we make customary treats and food, pancakes and all traditional sweets.”

hadra, are pulled on chariots as well.

“All the ladies carry Subhadra,” Patnaik said.

There will then be a buffet available for a small fee, followed by a cultural program featuring traditional folk music and classical Indiana dances. There is no admission fee and it is open to the public.

“At the cultural event we have a number of traditional dances,” Patnaik said. “We have a lot of people doing it. It’s a pretty organized cultural program, about an hourand-a-half to a couple of hours.”

Jagannath’s stay will actually be shorter as the return is set for 10 a.m. July 2 at the Hindu Temple of Central Indiana.

“It’s pretty similar to the June 25 event.

We return the god to his temple and there is food to eat,” Patnaik said.

Playing a couple in “Aladdin Jr.” won’t be strange to Cynthia Kauffman theater and Weston LeCrone.

The friends played Ado Annie and Will Parker in Zionsville Community High School production of “Oklahoma” in 2016.

LeCrone will play the title role and Kauffman is cast as Princess Jasmine in Summer Stock Stage’s production set for June 21-25 at Park Tudor School’s Ayres Auditorium in Indianapolis.

“It helps that we know each other instead of playing to a stranger, which is really nice,” LeCrone said.

Blueprint for Improvement: Base-level master bath turned custom Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal was to design a customized master bath with a larger shower and added storage.

1. The larger shower footprint was accomplished by removing the large tub. The existing window was replaced with a frosted, vinyl fixed window to allow daylight in while keeping the shower private from the exterior of the home.

2. The shower included dual showerheads, a recessed niche in the half wall to store products, and a sliced pebble accent tile for the shower floor.

3. The vanity was replaced with wood-grain cabinets that maximized storage with tower cabinets. Additional storage was created with built-in utility cabinets where the old shower used to be.

4. The natural-looking materials and additional lighting make the bathroom visually inviting to the couple. Now they have a fully functional bathroom when their kids’ bath is remodeled in the future!

Long-deserted towns were once among Syria’s most popular tourist destinations.

Tragically, Syria’s ongoing civil war is causing some of these ghost towns travel to be repopulated.

In the first century, people began building towns on the fertile western end of the Aleppo plateau in what is now northwestern Syria, taking advantage of the area’s location along the trading route between Anatolia and the East. Eventually, approximately 700 towns lay along a strip approximately 90 miles long, prospering by exchanging wheat, olive oil and wine for silver and gold. In the seventh century, the area came under the control of the Umayyad Caliphate, which changed the trade routes.

The residents, their commercial opportunities eliminated, abandoned their towns and moved to the cities. Surprisingly, many of the buildings have survived more or less intact, creating an eerie impression of rural life at the height of the Byzantine Empire. In 2011, 40 abandoned villages were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site named the

“Ancient Villages of Northern Syria.”

Serjilla, about 60 miles southwest of Aleppo, is among the best preserved of the so-called “Dead Cities.” Founded as a Christian town in 473 A.D., Serjilla includes the ruins of an ancient church. A few hundred feet from the church are a still-standing, two-story villa and the remains of a stone building containing an ancient olive press.

Much better preserved are a large public bathhouse and a nearby meeting hall. Close by, in the abandoned town of al Bara, are two extraordinary pyramid-shaped tombs, the larger one encompassing five stone sarcophagi with Christian markings.

As Syrians have fled the fighting and bombings in Aleppo and other cities, thousands have sought refuge in the Dead Cities, some living in the tombs and others living in camps among the ruins. In Syria’s Dead Cities, life goes on.

Dispatches Grilling corn – It’s almost that time of the summer when fresh picked Indiana sweet corn is at its best. If you haven’t tried grilling corn, here’s how to do it.

First, pull the husks down around the base of the corn, but leave attached. Remove silks and soak the corn for 15 minutes in cold water. Pull the husks back up and place on the grill. Cook at about 350 degrees for 10-20 minutes, turning several times during the process.
