Zionsville schools adopts armed-officer policy

At the June 11 Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees meeting, the dialogue focused heavily SCHOOL SAFETY on school safety and policy changes that will ensure students’ protection.

ZCS Supt. Scott Robison, Boone Co. Sheriff Mike Nielsen, Zionsville Police Chief Robert Knox and Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak announced that all ZCS schools will have at least one uniformed police officer beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

Several law enforcement authorities attended in a show of support for the policy.

Robison introduced a multi-pronged approach to school safety, which involves two main categories — a systemic change initiative focusing on behavior and mental health support, and a strategic implementation of devices, practices and staffing which will include at least one armed police officer in all schools.

“Simply put, safety solutions could never cost as much as any child’s safety is worth,” Robison said.

Behavioral Intervention Practitioner Dabney Frothingham and Director of Student Services Maggie Ioannacci presented a new enterprise known as the Dynamic Student Services Team. DSST ties in to the ZCS Strong in Every Way initiative, focusing on student social and emotional development. The approach also will connect parents with additional community resources and provide support for teachers who have challenging students in their classroom.

“We are seeking to support students at all levels,” Ioannacci said.

Nielsen stressed the importance of having an officer in every school. He said that the recent Noblesville shooting hit too close to home, but that he felt it was not a matter of if, but when, it happens here.

“As sheriff, I take the safety of our children more seriously than any other part of my duty,” Nielsen said.

Nielsen said he is working with Knox on the district’s ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) procedures. Noblesville uses the same safety strategy. Nielsen commended Noblesville Schools for their execution of the plan after the recent shooting.

DCI tour stop — The Drum Corps International (DCI) Summer 2018 Tour is making a stop in Zionsville. DCI is the major league of marching bands. They will be at Zionsville High School on July 11. or reactionary recommendation, adding that the council has been working on implementation for more than a year. Funding will be the issue, but the Town of Zionsville must follow up on Nielsen’s recommendation.

“If you don’t have safety, nothing else matters,” Jacob said. “I stand before you to tell you that we are going to find funding, some way, somehow.”

Knox promised that the Zionsville Police Dept, will follow through and provide an officer for every school.

“We will do everything we can to keep all of the children safe,” Knox said. “That is my commitment to you. As long as I’m on the job, we are going to have officers in our schools.”

Haak stressed the importance of the issue.

“We have a common goal with an easy solution,” Haak said. “This is extremely important.”

Concluding the discussion on safety, Robison announced that Chad Smith would be returning to ZCS to serve as the district’s safety specialist and energy manager, effective July 1.

Caregiver support — The Metro Indy Lewy Body Dementia caregiver support group meets from 2 to 3:30 p.m. the second Thursday every month at Amore Pizzeria in Boone Village, Zionsville. Transportation discussions — The Indiana Dept. of Transportation will host an open house session, where transportation-related topics will be informally discussed. INDOT team members will be available to address questions from the public and solicit input.

Storms spark fire in Zionsville

Adrian Matejka spoke June 7, reading from his work, “Map to the Stars.” Matejka was born in Nuremberg, Germany and grew up in California and Indiana. He is a graduate of Indiana University and the MFA program at Southern Illinois University. He is the author of “The Devil’s Garden” (Alice James Books, 2003) and “Mixology” (Penguin, 2009). His third book, “The Big Smoke” (Penguin, 2013), was awarded the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. His most recent book, “Map to the Stars,” which contains a poem with the same title, was released from Penguin in March 2017. Matejka teaches in the MFA program at Indiana University in Bloomington and is working on a new collection of poems, “Hearing Damage,” and a graphic novel.

AL SALAM FOUNDATION HOLDS CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IFTAR

Al Salam Foundation hosted the Civic Engagement Iftar June 1 at 502 Event Center, which brings together Muslims and people from other faith communities for a meal to break the daily fast during the month of Ramadan. 30 years of Charm Club Quilts

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com This year’s Charm Club Quilt Show at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center may become a treasure hunt as SULLIVANMUNCE many of the quilters have hidden the theme of “Thirty” into their quilts to celebrate three decades of quilting together.

“You can hunt for what they might be,” said Judy Pleiss, one of a handful of charter Charm Club members. “It was challenging to come up with something that was a little bit different.”

Each unique quilt is 30-by-30 inches. A second quilt theme will show buildings, homes or fences.

“Houses are a common, popular theme within traditional quilt making, but we have more innovative ones as well,” Pleiss said.

The biennial show began at the SullivanMunce to display the charm quilts created by a group of women who simply wanted to collaborate and create that type of quilt, which doesn’t repeat any fabric design.

Pleiss appreciates that the Charm Club is supportive of the different styles that each quilter creates, whether traditional or con-

Whitestown man crashes ATV

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a crash involving an off-road vehicle that occurred around PUBLIC SAFETY 6:30 p.m. June 11. First responders and conservation officers were dispatched to the area of Main Street and Albert S. White Drive in Whitestown. Conservation officers were assisted by Whitestown Fire Dept., Whitestown EMS and Whitestown Police Dept.

Whitestown resident Brian Romano, 35, was operating a Yamaha Raptor 700 on Albert S. White Drive when he lost control. He was thrown approximately 25 feet from the vehicle at a speed later determined near 40 mph. The vehicle was not registered to be on the roadway.

Whitestown EMS transported Romano to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Romano was wearing a helmet but sustained a broken femur.

“We do see quite a few ORV crashes where further injury is caused because someone was not wearing a helmet,” McCauley said. “You can have blunt-force trauma, which is a serious issue.”

Indiana law defines “off-road vehicle” as “a motor-driven vehicle capable of cross-country travel without benefit of a road.”

In July 2017, Indiana lawmakers made it a Class C violation for individuals under 18 to operate an ORV without a helmet.

“It’s getting warmer and kids are out of school. We know that people enjoy (allterrain vehicles),” McCauley said. “There is a safe way to go about it.”

Sisters cap special season

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Senior Anna Campbell knew this was a move she had to make.

After three years playing TENNIS No. 1 singles for the Zionsville Community High School girls tennis team, Anna had the opportunity to play No. 1 doubles with her sister Lauren, a sophomore.

“We knew this was our last chance to play together,” Lauren said. “We know each other’s games as well as we know our own.

We cover well for each other’s weaknesses.

We just work well together.”

Anna said she expected the duo would do pretty well in the state tournament.

“I was really pleased with our season,” she said. “I wish our draw could have been different for the state finals.”

The sisters won their quarterfinals match, topping Penn’s Ali Kumfer and Alexis Snelson 6-0, 6-3 June 8. However, the Campbell sisters managed to win just one game against Cathedral’s eventual unbeaten state champions Claire Koscielski and Meg Coleman in the semifinals June 9 at Park Tudor.

“It was awesome we got that far,” Anna said. “It was really good competition. We had a lot of fun with it. Our goal was to get to state, but I think we surpassed expectations with some of the big wins we had.”

In the team regional, the Campbells lost the first set 6-0 and were down 3-0 to Brownsburg’s Caitlin Predin and Payton Haygood before rallying for the three-set victory.

“We had an ability to fight and stay in matches other people would have already checked out of,” Anna said.

The Campbell sisters finished 22-4, also losing to Cathedral’s Koscielski and Coleman in the regular season.

“We get along on and off the court,” said Lauren, who played No. 1 doubles with Simryn Kapur as a freshman. “We’ve never had too many issues, except for the little things.”

Driver charged in fatal crash

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com A Zionsville man was arrested June 7 on charges involving a fatal car crash that killed a 3-year-old PUBLIC SAFETY boy from Rockford, Ill. The Illinois State Police Dept. determined that Matthew Munz, 49, of Zionsville, was using his cellphone moments before the crash, which occurred on I-90 at mile post 47 near Huntley, Ill. March 23.

Munz On June 5, the Kane County State Attorney’s Office approved felony charges against Munz, which included two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a communication device, both Class 4 felonies.

According to a press release from the Illinois State Police Dept., the preliminary investigation indicated that Munz, driving a black Ford Fusion, failed to stop for a red Ford Taurus that was disabled in the middle lane of traffic and rear-ended the vehicle.

The passenger of the Ford Taurus was criti-

cally injured and a 3-year-old boy died.

According to the press release, Munz surrendered to Illinois State Police District 15 investigators June 6. He posted a $10,000 bond and is scheduled for a July 13 court date at the Kane County Courthouse in St. Charles, Ill. “The Illinois State Police ask all motorists, nationwide, to please put down their cellphones while driving, to avoid senseless tragedies,” Sgt. Ryan Cape of the Illinois State Police Dept. stated.

WTHR anchor John Stehr puts plans on hold to assist co-workers

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com John Stehr began to ponder a path to retirement following a medical scare. In July 2017, the WTHR-13 coCOVER STORY anchor had open-heart surgery to repair a thoracic aortic aneurysm.

“It just gave me perspective,” Stehr said.

Stehr had yearly check-ups on the aneurysm when it was detected, before surgery was deemed necessary. The long recovery process gave him time to consider his future.

“When you have time to sit and think, you tend to sit and think,” he said. “I realized it was time. A 42-year run in broadcasting is pretty good. I loved the career and now can turn my attention to other things.”

However, a turn of events at the station has caused Stehr to postpone his retirement.

His team at WTHR-13 was so supportive during his own recovery that when co-anchor Andrea Morehead, who shares duties with Stehr and Anne Marie Tiernon, announced she had breast cancer in early May, Stehr committed to postpone his retirement for as long as he is needed.

“Everyone was very supportive of me when I was going through my medical issue last year, both my co-workers and bosses,” said Stehr, who turns 60 Aug. 20. “Offering my support to them now is the only right thing to do. I feel fortunate to be in a position to be able to help.”

Morehead is appreciative of Stehr’s decision.

“He very well could have stayed committed to his June 20th retirement date, but after revealing my health fight with breast cancer that will have me on and off the anchor desk for several months while I undergo treatment, John immediately told me he would work indefinitely, so that I could focus on healing,” Morehead said. “The kind and heartfelt gesture is much appreciated and echoes our commitment to help one another that goes beyond just being coworkers. Our friendship extends to our families, and his wife, Amy, has been an angel

with delicious prepared meals.”

Even after he retires, Stehr said he will be a contingent employee for WTHR, helping on Indy 500 race day coverage and some fill-in anchoring for a couple of years.

“I can keep my toe in the water without having to tread water every day,” he said.

Although it will be nice not to stress over ratings, Stehr knows he has been fortunate.

“I’m one of those people that knew from the time I was 5 years old what I wanted to do. I’ve never wavered and really never

wanted to do anything else,” Stehr said. “I remember specifically when I was 5 years old, we were sitting down to watch (CBS News anchor) Walter Cronkite and my family was being a little bit noisy. I was the one saying, ‘It’s time to be quiet, Walter Cronkite is coming on.’ I would watch the evening news every night.”

Stehr became a WTHR evening anchor in 1995 after leaving a job at CBS News in New York as a network correspondent and anchor for CBS Morning News.

He said he has enjoyed the interaction of being tied to a community.

“You can fake anyone for a day, a week or short period of time,” Stehr said. “Over the long haul, people will see if you are being authentic or not. I just had to be who I am and people will like me or not. At our station, the relationships you see are real relationships. It’s a nice culture we’ve built and maintained.”

Morehead said she will miss Stehr’s sense of humor the most.

“For the past 19 years, his microphone check before the broadcasts has always been the same, his impression of Ronald Reagan saying, ‘Well, I don’t know,’” Morehead said.

Meet John Stehr Personal: Pittsburgh native graduated from Gannon University in Erie, Pa., in 1980. Has five children, Morgan, Connor, Riley, Jeanie and Meredith. Married Amy in 2003. Amy owns Sugar Shuga desserts. Moved to Zionsville when he started at WTHR-13 in 1995. Member of Zionsville Presbyterian Church. Starting to build a new home in the Village of Zionsville this summer.

Career: Started at Erie TV station while in college. Worked at Grand Rapids, Mich., and WISH-8, then a CBS affiliate, on a late-night news show in Indianapolis. Then went to a Salt Lake City TV station before going to New York as one of CNBC’s founding anchors. He joined CBS as a correspondent and served as anchor on CBS Morning News before joining WTHR. Favorite thing about job: “I really enjoy the day-to-day coverage of things.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a day where I felt there is nothing to talk about. The flow of information is always important.” One highlight was traveling with former Sen. Richard Lugar to Russia in 2002.

Favorite Zionsville activities: Walking with his dog, Johnny Cash, a labradoodle, on the trails. Riding bicycles on the trail with his youngest daughter, Meredith.

Commentary by Terry Anker As the tide rolls in with the phases of the moon, the afternoon surge of email and other communication is predictable. New information is posted, articles published and requests sent. We go to our mailbox, whether encountering physical correspondence or the electronic sort, to address the interactions.

Some is of the marketing variety, trying to draw attention to their product, service or nonpprofit. Some is of the business variety, updates to balances, changes to agreements or reminders for needed action.

And still more is of a weighty collection of matters – personal and business letters, checks and deposits or pressing decisions that require our input. We triage, sort and ameliorate each. Most are quickly scanned and recycled. Others are processed and cataloged. But a few require response.

Questions are asked with the sender holding motion until our rejoinder.

With note of the irony, it is in this very most important of the categories where we often procrastinate. Setting aside critical matters for future consideration, we postpone our attentions until some other, nonspecific time. When a message contains three questions (two to be answered with little thought and one requiring some deliberation), we respond only to the two, ignoring what must have been the most pressing in the mind of the sender.

Shouldn’t we make clear our intention to answer (or not) the unanswered at some defined point yet to come? Like an undiagnosed and selective attention deficit disorder, are we dancing around the most difficult and, one could surmise, most critical while paying clear attention to the inconsequential?

My middle sister decided to split the 12hour journey in two, driving roughly 60 percent on Friday and the remainder on Saturday. Benefits included significantly less lumbar pain, a decent amount of sleep and pool time for her young teenagers who couldn’t possibly spend one more second on their phones. Of course, the downside was the cost of a hotel room and the dead battery she discovered at the onset of Day 2. Prep team, we’re gonna need more Chardonnay!

Doo and I elected last-minute to drive straight through the night. There was virtually no traffic, only one Cracker Barrel stop and markedly lower brattiness levels among our kids. But my eyes started crossing around 1 a.m., Doo almost killed us outside of Asheville with his sleep-deprived impersonation of a Formula 1 racer, and our entire six-pack was on the verge of mutually assured destruction as we pulled up to the beach house that wouldn’t be available for another eight hours.

As you can see from this analysis, your best bet is to fly. Peace out.

Tribute to Charles Krauthammer Commentary by Ward Degler I have admired Charles Krauthammer since I first heard him speak on a television news program years ago.

PLAIN TALK He said something to the effect that both Democrats and Republicans were idiots. He believed political extremism from any source was a plague. This was noteworthy at a time when most citizens and the preponderance of journalists were fiercely on one side or the other of the political spectrum.

I also admired the man because of his bulldog approach to a diverse life that had an incredible number of moving parts. He studied economics and political science at McGill University in Montreal, expanded his world view of politics during a fellowship stint at Oxford, only to return to the United States to study, of all things, medicine at Harvard.

During his first year at Harvard he broke his back in a diving accident which left him permanently paralyzed from the neck down.

Despite being hospitalized for the next 14 months, Krauthammer continued his medical studies, became a certified psychiatrist, and over the next few years while confined

to a wheelchair, pioneered new advances in the treatment of mental illness, specifically bipolar disorder.

His achievements earned him an assignment planning psychiatric studies in Washington, D.C., under the Carter administration, a move that bounced him back into the political arena. He started writing political pieces for the New Republic and later, essays for Time magazine. He ultimately became a columnist for The Washington Post and a commentator on NPR. His work for the Post earned him a Pulitzer Prize. In recent years many of us have enjoyed his wisdom on Fox News.

He measured human endeavors and his own responses with the yardstick of common sense.

And now we learn Charles Krauthammer is dying of cancer. It’s not fair. Our crazy world desperately needs a common-sense spokesman. He was among the best and he will be sorely missed.

Here’s my 2 cents Commentary by Dick Wolfsie If you were the last person leaving your favorite restaurant and the only umbrella in the coatroom looked just like HUMOR yours (but you knew it wasn’t yours), would you take it? That would be very wrong, and I wouldn’t do it. Unless, of course, it was raining.

Here are some hypothetical situations and how I would advise anyone faced with these dilemmas: Q: I have been a waitress at a steak house for 35 years and I have taken home a bottle of ketchup every night since 1985. I now have 9,000 bottles in my garage. Now I feel guilty but don’t want to get in trouble just before I retire.

A: Returning them all at once would raise suspicion. Return them the same way you acquired them. So, delay your retirement or eat there every night until 2040.

Q: When traveling I take the little bottles of shampoo and conditioner from the hotel bathroom. The desk clerk said the business expects it. I recently picked up a Sony TV and a General Electric hair dryer from the Westin. Should I stop?

A: Only after you cross the border.

Q: My neighbor doesn’t know I mow his lawn when he’s at work. It’s driving him crazy that his grass never grows. Should I tell him?

A: And ruin this perfect practical joke?

Hey, here’s my address. Wouldn’t it be funny if my car never got dirty?

Q: My fiancé bought a hideous felt hat and I’m embarrassed to be seen with him. Each week, I secretly replace his hat with an identical one, but about a quarterinch bigger. John thinks his head is shrinking. Do you think he’ll figure this out?

A: Heavens, no (see letter below).

Q: Recently, I have come to the realization that my head is shrinking. I’m probably dying. Should I tell my fiancée what is happening? I don’t think she knows.

A. You have underestimated her (see letter above).

Zoning approved for ZCS clinic

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com Zionsville School Corp. recently purchased a 2.42-acre residential home at 700 Mulberry St., with the SCHOOLS intent of building an employee clinic. The building is adjacent to the ZCS Educational Services Center at 900 Mulberry St. At the June 4 Zionsville Town Council meeting, the council unanimously approved a zoning change for the acreage, from urban residential (RSF-2) to special use zoning (SU-1).

Director of Planning and Economic Development Wayne DeLong presented the

zoning change to the council, saying that it had been favorably recommended by the Zionsville Plan Commission. The zoning change supports the school system’s plan to move forward with a clinic that will provide medical care to school district employees.

“This project will require future development plan filings with the town Plan Commission,” Delong said at the meeting.

“There will be future hearings related to this project.”

Access to the clinic will be from the west side of the property, which faces the school.

There is no new access proposed along Pine Meadow Drive or Mulberry Street.

TriPhase Technology to relocate

TriPhase specializes in INNOVATION custom electronics and technology for in-home and commercial use.

It offers surveillance, networking, lighting control and interior design services, among offerings.

“Our mission is to connect people with innovative technology solutions to simplify and enhance their lives at home and work,” TriPhase Technology founders Robert and Shanna Haecker stated in a press release.

“We look forward to bringing our customized technology solutions to the Zionsville community.”

The company’s decision to move was due in part to the efforts of the Boone County Economic Development Corp. (BCEDC), which works to bring profitable companies to Boone County communities.

According to BCEDC Executive Director Molly Whitehead, Zionsville embraces companies like TriPhase, which can have a positive economic impact on the community.

“We want to make sure that we bring companies here that can bring a positive benefit to the community, and that it’s the sort of company that the community would like to see,” Whitehead said.

TriPhase plans to add approximately 10 new employees to its workforce of 43 by 2021.

TriPhase’s new location, a nearly 28,000-square-foot building on Bennett Parkway, will function as a multi-purpose space.

“It will not only serve as a design center but also an event space, and it’s meant to showcase their technology and designs,”

Whitehead said. “They will undergo some renovations on the building, and it may be some time in 2019 before they can open their doors.”

“Entrepreneurs and businesses continue to find success in Zionsville and we look forward to watching TriPhase Technology grow here,” Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak stated.

Youth piano competition showcases talent, offers scholarships

By Maria Cook editorial@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition will PERFORMANCE return to Carmel for its fifth year. From June 27 to July 1, artists ages 5 to 18 will compete for awards and scholarships.

Competitors represent 16 states and 15 nations, including China, the United Kingdom and Russia. Areas of competition include solo, duet and concerto.

Carmel Klavier President Irina Gorin has more than 35 years of experience teaching piano to grade-school students, both in the Ukraine and the U.S. After several years of observing other international piano competitions, Gorin realized there was a need for a more inclusive competition which could bring youth from around the world to Carmel.

“I always was taking my students to numerous local, national and international competitions and was not happy with politics, venues, judging system, rivalry and high costs in many,” Gorin said. “I always wanted the competition for youth to be a celebration of talent, encouragement and motivation for children. I had this idea of bringing young talents from around the world to Carmel and giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent in beautiful buildings and stages as well as to attract world-renowned judges and artists to educate the youth and perform for the Carmel community and competition participants.”

In addition to competing for scholarships, such as the $16,000 scholarship offered to a selected finalist by Indiana Wesleyan University, Carmel Klavier participants also compete for a variety of prestigious opportunities. In 2017, 9-yearold Lauren Lo, Fishers, was a recipient of the Contemporary Composer’s Award presented by Elena Cobb. The award includes an opportunity to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where stars such as The Beatles and Julie Andrews have performed.

“I got to play on Elton John’s red piano,” Lo said after her April 5 performance.

Lo’s mother, Christine Lo, said Carmel Klavier has changed the way her daughter approaches piano.

“The experience has given her more confidence with performing in public and has inspired her to practice even more,” Christine Lo said. “The camaraderie and energy in the recital hall was electric and definitely something she will cherish for a lifetime. Opportunities of this nature are so positive and give young performers like Lauren a chance to connect with other young pianists and to see the world.”

For older competitors, Carmel Klavier can be an important starting point for

their musical careers. Ari Brown, Carmel, competed in Carmel Klavier in 2014. He is now 21 years old and studying music composition at the New England Conservatory of Music and Computer Science at Tufts University in Boston.

“Whether or not I won, practicing to compete at the rigorous level set by the Carmel Klavier both developed work ethic and creativity that I can now apply to problem-solving in so many other fields,” Brown said. “Practicing for my performance, attending master classes and engaging with the other performers at Carmel Klavier were invaluable experiences in my path to attending New England Conservatory of Music. The Carmel Klavier strikes an unprecedented balance between rewarding excellence and celebrating the arts with everyone, which is a difficult task in competitive environments. All competitors walk away feeling a sense of personal accomplishment, which is the type of support that fueled my desire to continue into a creative major.”

Carmel Klavier will take place at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Selected finalists also will have an opportunity to perform solos, concertos, duets, ensembles and the pieces of featured composers at The Palladium in Carmel.

Heartland Film presents Indy Shorts Film Fest editorial@youarecurrent.com Heartland Film, Inc., a nonprofit arts organization, is expanding to bring a new festival to Indianapolis in support of the annual Heartland International Film Festival. Indy Shorts International Film Fest (Indy Shorts), will exclusively feature films less than 40 minutes in length July 26 to 29 at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.

“In 2017, our film submissions grew by more than 1,000 submissions from around the world,” Heartland Film President Craig Prater stated. “The majority of these were short films, and we are thrilled to dedicate an all-new festival to this exciting medium of independent film.”

The show is one of GHDT’s most elaborate and intricate full-length ballets and a favorite of Hancock’s. The performance will be the closer for GHDT’s 20th anniversary season.

“The story is so beautiful and tragic, and then to interpret that into dance is really beautiful,” Hancock said. “It’s my all-time favorite piece.”

Doobie Brothers return

CONCERT “It’s nice playing with other bands whose music you admire and enjoy,” Simmons said. “To check out what they’re doing every night is a big perk for other musicians, to be able to suck in the talent and artistry.”

The Doobie Brothers will join Steely Dan in a 7:30 p.m. concert June 24 at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center. The Doobie Brothers toured with Journey in 2016 and Chicago in 2017. The Doobies will join the Eagles for concerts in San Francisco and San Diego in September.

“It’s kind of standard to give concertgoers a little more bang for their buck,” Simmons said. “Our entire career we’ve performed with other bands on and off. We play some shows on our own, too. These tours are a little more upscale.”

Simmons, 69, couldn’t imagine being part of the Doobie Brothers this long when they formed in 1970.

“I didn’t even think I’d be alive this long, to be honest with you,” Simmons said. “It’s

Simmons said he’s been fortunate to work with great songwriters. He wrote several songs for the Doobies, including the No. 1 hit “Black Water.”

Simmons has been the one constant in the band. Tom Johnston had to take a leave of absence for health reasons in 1975 and was replaced by Michael McDonald, who brought a more soulful approach. Johnston eventually quit the band in 1977. The band disbanded in 1982 with McDonald pursuing a solo career. The Doobies reformed in 1987 with Johnston back on lead vocals.

Through his craft, Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre company dancer Isaac Jones expresses the hunch and humanDANCE ity of Quasimodo.

Gregory Hancock of GHDT said Quasimodo is the most challenging role he’s ever created for a dancer. Jones doesn’t have a fake hunch on his back.

Instead, he finds different ways to contort and distort his body to portray the central character of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” like bending, lifting and changing his footing.

“I feel like every time I run it, I find new ways to find that distortion within the character,” Jones said.

GHDT’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” set for 7 p.m. June 29 and 30 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, reminds people to look past appearances. “(Quasimodo) is not the suave, handsome man,” Jones said. “But in the end, he’s one of the most beautiful characters in the show.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Meridian Kessler three seasons room Commentary by Larry Greene

Background info: This 1925 bungalow in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood of northern Indianapolis was the perfect space for the owner and family, but the backyard lacked the same charm the rest of the home possessed.

The goal was to create a space that the homeowner and family can utilize throughout more of the year for leisure and entertainment.

1. The largest transformation came from eliminating the deck and replacing it with a three-seasons porch. The porch was created using EZE-Breeze Venting Windows, which allow for up to 75 percent ventilation.

2. The interior of the three-seasons room was finished with the addition of a gas fireplace, plank-wood flooring and a lighting plan.

3. The exterior of the porch addition was finished to match the remainder of the home, making the addition appear as if it were a part of the original home.

4. Another major change came from the addition of a stamped concrete patio with a seating wall and gas fire pit.

Jaipur’s giant silver jars Commentary by Don Knebel According to the “Guinness Book of World Records,” the world’s heaviest silver objects are two enormous jars on display in Jaipur, India. An identical jar lies at the TRAVEL bottom of the Red Sea. In the 18th century, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II constructed a city in northwest India to be the capital of his Amber Kingdom. He named the city Jaipur after himself and erected an imposing palace near the city’s center. In 1876, important city buildings, including the palace, were painted pink to celebrate the official visit of Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Edward, making Jaipur the Pink City. Upon Victoria’s death in 1901, Edward, now King Edward VII of England and Emperor of India, invited Jaipur’s then-ruling maharaja, Madho Singh II, to his coronation.

Hindu religious leaders conditioned Madho Singh’s trip on finding a ship that had never served beef and carrying with him sufficient water so that he and his entourage would never have to use English water for drinking or bathing. A brand new

steamboat satisfied the first condition.

The second condition was met by filling each of three identical silver jars with 900 gallons of water from the sacred Ganges River. Each jar, made from 14,000 melted silver coins, was more than 5 feet tall and weighed 750 pounds. During the ship’s passage through the Red Sea on the way to London, the waters became unusually rough. Worried Hindu priests on board convinced the maharaja to placate Varuna, the god of the sea, by tossing him one of the silver jars, after which the trip proceeded without incident. The maharaja attended the king’s coronation and the king inspected the maharaja’s water jars. The two remaining jars are now displayed inside Jaipur’s Pink City Palace, where guards use their mirror-like surfaces to assure that their turbans are positioned correctly.

Everyone’s on the lookout for their next clever party anecdote for that awkward pause between the GRAMMAR GUY cheese course and dessert (I know I am). The perfect quip at the perfect time will make you feel like a million bucks in the tuxedo people are now assuming you own. If you memorize today’s grammar gem, you’re guaranteed to be the hero at the next soiree or gala you attend.

Do you remember the pneumonic device from math that goes, “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally?” This helps you remember the order of operations in a math equation (parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction). In English, there’s an equivalent but largely unknown “order of operations” for the order in which adjectives go in front of a noun. Even more shocking is that this rule is taught to most non-native speakers, but native speakers are never taught it. The order is quantity, opinion, size, physical quality, shape, age, color, origin, material, type, purpose, noun.

We are never formally taught this adjective order, but we know that “five wrinkly

octogenarian bronze Italian sunbathers” sounds correct (albeit an odd scenario), but if you say “octogenarian five Italian wrinkly bronze sunbathers,” you sound like a total weirdo. You don’t know how you know that’s wrong; you just know it.

Let’s try it with some simpler phrases.

You’d never say “old little lady”; you would always say “little old lady.” You’ve probably heard someone remark about their baby’s “big brown eyes,” but if that same parent went on about their baby’s “brown big eyes” you’d think something was wrong with them. Try saying these phrases out loud and you’ll hear how truly ridiculous adjectives in the wrong order sound to your English-preferring ears.

And, while I don’t have a clever pneumonic device for adjective order, it’s something you should feel privileged not to know — unless, that is, you want to be the talk of your town’s small secretive Sicilian social circle.
