Holliday Farms construction under way

By Chris Pappas • news@currentzionsville.com Holliday Road and the surrounding farmland have been a centerpiece of Zionsville’s natural beauty and historic alDEVELOPMENT lure. Now, construction for a development that includes an 18-hole championship golf course, 9-hole executive golf course, 450 luxury homes and nature trails for hiking and walking is under way on Holliday Farms. Henke Development Group intends to use tactful planning and impactful conservation strategies to enhance the allure rather than tarnish it.

Homes in the Holliday Farms development will range from $600,000 to $2.5 million. There will be a small town center with commercial businesses, such as coffee shops and restaurants. Holliday Road will be turned into Holliday Road Trail, for walking and biking, and it will connect to Turkey Foot Park.

According to Steve Henke, president of Henke Development, 80 percent of the original trees on the property will remain. In addition, a vast amount of land north and south of the town will be reforested by Henke Development.

“We are committed to planting about 25,000 trees (50 acres) and restoring a forested area on the banks of the White River in a nearby local county park,” Henke said. “We have committed to plant an additional 40 acres of trees and restoring wooded habitat in a couple fields next to a creek south of Indianapolis for a wildlife habitat. We will also be planting thousands of trees at Holliday Farms over the next four or five years and are preserving extensive wooded buffers along Eagle Creek for wildlife as well as almost all of the wetlands.

“We have also preserved the woods on (U.S.) 421 on both sides of the entry to Holliday Farms to preserve the feeling one has when entering Holliday Road now.”

“I was pretty upset that they would disrupt and change such a beautiful piece of land, especially to build another golf course,” he said.

Zionsville student receives scholarship — Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana recently awarded $5,000 scholarships to 20 students around the state.

Zionsville Community High School student William Schrepferman was one of the recipients. This is the 11th year the charity has been able to provide scholarships to students with outstanding academic achievements.

The famous red bridge, near Holliday Road, which recently collapsed in an accident, will be part of the development. A new road is being built for residents to have safer access to Michigan Road. At the request of Henke Development Group, Boone County is rebuilding the bridge exactly as it was, down to the red paint.

Zionsville American Legion celebrates history — The Zionsville American Legion Post 79 will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the American Legion by conducting a community day with a 5k run, walk or 25K bicycle ride June 22. Airport to conduct charity event

By Jarred Meeks • news@currentzionsville.com A local airport will be the site June 22 of a free charity event that combines two previously separate events, showcasing new FUNDDRAISER aircraft and other aviation elements.

First Wing Jet Center, the fixed-base operator at Indianapolis Executive Airport, will conduct the 13th Annual Open House and Fly-In at Indianapolis Executive Airport at 11329 E. Ind. 32.

First Wing Jet Center, formerly Montgomery Aviation, has partnered with the Commemorative Air Force’s Wings Over Indy event. The event will feature new aircraft, airplane rides and aviation displays.

The event will begin with a $5 pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed by family friendly activities from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A Sun King beer garden also will be open for those 21 and older starting at noon.

A new Hops ‘n Props veterans’ dinner will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on-site on the day of the event. For more, visit wingsoverindy.com/hops-n-props.html.

ZEF receives $25,000 grant – The Zionsville Education Foundation recently received a $25,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation. The grant will be used to fund the 2019 Fall Classroom Grant cycle within Zionsville Community Schools. ZEF classroom grants are awarded twice a year through an application process.

Westfield, Whitestown among fastest growing communities – Whitestown and Westfield have both ranked as the state’s fastest growing communities for the second year in a row, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates analyzed by the Indiana Business Research Center. Both Whitestown and Westfield grew by approximately 5.2 percent in 2018. Other fast-growing communities include St. John, Avon and Plainfield.

ZIONSVILLE/ WHITESTOWN The Boone County HighCONSTRUCTION way Dept. closed 96th Street between Ford Road and Moore Road June 10 for resurfacing and safety improvements. Local access for residents will be maintained within the closure. The road will temporarily re-open to through traffic at the beginning of July. A second, full closure to thru-traffic will begin in late July or early August for a final road surface treatment. For more information, contact the Boone County Highway Dept. at 765-482-4550.

The Indiana Dept. of Transportation has announced a bridge rehabilitation project on the U.S. 421 Bridge over Little Eagle Creek between 121st and 131st streets. The project will restrict traffic to one 12-foot lane, which began April 29. Motorists will be controlled at the bridge with a traffic signal. This work will be completed at the end of August.

Zionsville Road remains closed for a reconstruction project involving the widening of a 1-mile section of the road, converting it from its current two-lane configuration to three lanes by widening the existing lanes and adding a center turn lane between Technology Center Drive and 106th Street.

The project also includes adding a 10-foot, multi-use pathway along the entire length of the project on the west side of the road. There also will be a 10-foot, multi-use pathway on the east side of the road from Inglenook and Zionsville Cemetery north to 106th Street. The road is closed in order to minimize cost and project duration and is expected to continue through November. Local access for residents to and from homes and businesses will be from the north end of the project. No traffic will be permitted south of the Vonterra subdivision entrance.

WESTFIELD Shelborne Road between 146th Street and 151st Street, and between 146th Street and 141st Street will be closed for road reconstruction. The road will be closed to all through traffic, tentatively opening on or before Oct. 21. During the closure, traffic should utilize the signed detour route. Property owners will continue to have access to their properties through the construction area. This closure is part of the improvements to 146th Street, which will widen the roadway to four lanes of traffic from Towne Road to Shelborne Road.

Major utility relocations are ongoing as part of the intersection improvements at Ind. 32 and Ditch Road, which will include the addition of turn lanes and a traffic signal. No road closures are anticipated at this time.

Memories of ‘John the Baptist’ Commentary by Ward Degler

If God treats souls according to their impact on humanity, there is a very special place reserved in heaven PLAIN TALK for John Angle. John has been gone for many years, of course, but to folks in Jefferson City, Mo., he holds a permanent place of honor in their hearts and memories.

John was known to all of us as “John the Baptist,” a name he selected for himself at some undetermined moment in his life.

He was simple-minded, the illiterate son of emancipated slaves, born two days before Christmas in 1875.

The first time I saw John was in 1950 when I was in high school. The last time I saw him I was a writer for the city newspaper a dozen years later. Both times, he was sitting on the sidewalk in front of a downtown store, purposefully squeezing an ancient and barely functional accordion and humming along with the phrases of some wordless tune.

John was always shabbily but colorfully dressed. His signature costume consisted of a frayed tuxedo jacket and an ancient silk top hat that he wore at a jaunty angle atop a crop of wiry white hair. Several rows of medals were pinned to his jacket along with a number of military campaign ribbons and a faded VFW Buddy Poppy. His entourage included two or more stuffed animals and a mechanical monkey that clapped metal cymbals together when wound up

with a key.

On the sidewalk in front of him was a brass collection plate, an anonymous gift from a local church. John was always grateful for any donation passersby contributed.

He never asked for anything, but if shown a handful of change, he would always opt for the pennies rather than the silver.

“Gold money,” he called it.” I like gold money.”

Whenever there was a parade in town, the folks in charge always made sure John was positioned somewhere near the front, often right behind the drum major. John the Baptist was no slouch at strutting his stuff.

He lived with three elderly women on the west side of town. Someone said that one of them was a distant relative, but I never confirmed it. Each morning he gathered his belongings at the bus stop and rode downtown to the corner where he would set up shop. When the stores closed in the evening, he would ride the return bus back home. The bus drivers never charged him a fare.

I left town shortly after the last time I saw John and never returned. I found a note in the newspaper archives published on his birthday in 1968 inviting readers to send birthday cards to him at a nursing home in a neighboring city.

ZCS shares prevention program

The beginning of summer break marks the end of the initial Preventure program at Zionsville Community High EDUCATION School.

During the June 10 meeting of the board of trustees, Chief Academic Officer Kris Devereaux presented results from the first year. Preventure is a substance abuse prevention program that targets personality types that are more likely to misuse substances.

The program begins with a freshman student survey to establish a baseline within the district.

Of 547 freshmen, 537 completed the 23-question questionnaire identifying personality traits. Of the respondents, 228 were invited to participate in two 90-minute workshops, including 133 who identified with anxiety sensitivity, 30 with negative thinking, 14 with impulsivity and 51 as sensation-seeking.

The workshops, led by three assistant principals and two counselors trained by Preventure staff, had a 50 percent attendance rate.

According to Devereaux, students reported they felt more confident (4.28 out of 5) in their ability to recognize those traits in themselves after the workshops.

“I’m really excited that we’re doing stuff like this,” board member Michael Berg said.

The process will continue for two or three years before the program is implemented in other high school grade levels.

Other meeting highlights: • Officer Josh Chapman stepped down from his role as a ZCS school resource officer to pursue a new position with Homeland Security in California.

• The board approved a new behavioral health services partnership with Integrative Wellness, a community-focused practice based in Boone County treating mental health and addiction disorders.

• School meal pricing will increase 15 cents again next year, in accordance with the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which provides funding for federal lunch and breakfast programs.

• 2020 commencement has been rescheduled for May 31, 2020, to avoid a two-week gap between the last day of school and graduation date.

Local farmers having difficulty planting crops due to wet weather

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville resident Dawn Kouns said the adage “knee-high by the fourth of July” in reference to corn COVER STORY growth is outdated because of modern farming methods. But she said the saying might prove true this year because local farms are still fallow after excessive rain.

“What’s interesting is the wet weather has really been since last fall,” Kouns said.

“A lot of people in general notice weather but they don’t realize the rolling effect of weather last fall and the difficulty it causes farmers.”

Because of the wet fall weather, Kouns said she and her husband, Craig, were unable to do fall field preparation that’s normally required. Some farmers, she said, weren’t even able to harvest their crops.

The Kouns were unable to harvest two fields of corn last season due to wet fields.

Planting this season also has proved difficult. Typically, the cut-off date to plant corn is May 10. Kouns, along with many other farmers, only has approximately 30 percent of fields planted.

“This is very, very late trying to plant,” she said. “I’ve heard people getting out and getting stuck and people having to plant around pools of water in the fields. Grain

prices are rising, which when grain prices rise, food prices rise because the cost to feed the animals is rising. It has an effect on everyone, even if you don’t realize it at that point.”

Driving by fields, residents might see stranded tractors, which can’t be retrieved until the ground dries.

Seed companies, fertilizing companies and chemical companies also are being impacted.

In addition to raising corn and soybeans, the Kouns also have a hay crop. But because of wet fields, farmers can’t cut the

hay to meet the high demand of local horse farms.

Kouns said she and her husband have never experienced wet weather to this extent. Even if farmers are able to plant corn, rain still poses a problem.

“Now, we have a shorter growing season, so if it continues to rain, it can wash out the seed or it could rot in the ground,” Kouns said. “The hardest thing about farming is you can’t control the weather.”

Self-made legacies

Superheroes deserve the attention

Commentary by Terry Anker Around the second century B.C., leading Augustan poet Horace declared, “Pulvis et umbra sumus.”

He may be right in believing that “we are but dust and shadow.” Our lives fleet almost before we note their departure. We build monuments that, like his beloved Rome, eventually return to the Earth. Our names are first confused, then mispronounced, only to ultimately be forgotten altogether. Given the futile nature of legacy-building, are we simply better served to live for today? Or, can we hope to hang on through those subsequent others influenced by us hoping for a generation or two of remembrance?

But even as we strive to make our own name, too often we obsess about fleeing the inheritance imposed upon us by the generations that came before. We struggle to separate ourselves from our progenitors. Throughout our youth we strike out to be different, only to slide back to a deep-rooted fear in our own insignificance. We live in the shadow of giants. Is it possible to extract ourselves from those who came before?

And, did these mythical titans, our parents, mentors and heroes, fear the same? Were they, too, living an echo of their own antecedents? No doubt, failure to recognize the contributions and strengths of our forebearers is to miss the point of being human. Much can be learned about who we are by knowing who they were. It is a fool who imagines that we have evolved so much in these thousands of years.

Yet, are we running so hard from being someone else that we never bother to become ourselves?

Let the drunken games begins Commentary by Danielle Wilson Hijinks and shenanigans are on the horizon, friends. Next week is our annual vacation to South Carolina, where we cram 26 people into a beach house HUMOR for seven days and see what happens. Ranging in age from 3 to 77, my side of the family will test our survival skills as we seek to navigate toddler tantrums, sister drama and late-night, alcohol-fueled charades. I can’t wait!

My husband, Doo, learned long ago to bow out early, so he will be returning half way through. Another in-law employs similar tactics, arriving a few days after we’ve settled in to our sun- and sand-sojourn. But for most of the time, there will be plenty of humanity negotiating communal bathrooms, laundry and refrigerators (plural, thank God!). For me, the hardest part is always bedtime, as I and I alone tend toward the very early side of midnight (i.e., 10 p.m.), usually just as the

karaoke dance party is beginning right below me or an intense game of hide-and-seek commences outside my door. Aunt Danielle is definitely not the fun aunt!

Still, I wouldn’t miss this trip for anything.

We live all across the U.S., and the cousins have few opportunities to spend time with each other. And my mom insists that her grandbabies are all in one place; no separate condos for this mamaw! I’ll be sunburnt and emotionally drained by the end, for sure, and will probably have engaged in at least two sibling tiffs, but the memories of time spent with loved ones make the crazy worth it.

So, prepare for a tale of hijinks and shenanigans, friends, ‘cause it’s about to go down!

Editor, Superheroes are everywhere these days.

Superman and Batman have been household names for decades, but in the past 10 years, thanks largely to the Marvel movies, characters once only known by the most devoted of comic book junkies now have their own action figures.

Why do superheroes have such a powerful hold over our imagination? Two researchers in the European Journal of American Culture described superheroes as a part of America’s “national myth.” In their 2016 study, the researchers examined a Marvel comic mini-series called “Fear Itself.” The allusion in the title to Franklin Roosevelt’s famous speech was itself a part of the national myth. That period in history was found to be particularly important to the message of the comic.

In the 2000s, when the mini-series was published, society was in the midst of significant social unrest. Society had a long list of reasons to be fearful and worried, and for most of the 2000s the comics industry reflected that unrest. So in 2011, “Fear Itself” called upon America’s national myth, the ideals of society and used superheroes to promote them.

That portrayal of society’s ideals is the true importance of the superhero.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Whenever I visited Phyllis Baskerville’s toy museum in Fortville, I was mesmerized by the endless array of toys, HUMOR dolls, board games, records, lunch boxes and old magazines, each one in mint condition. The old Pentecostal church that housed her collection was dubbed Dolly Mama’s and was in operation for more than 12 years.

Phyllis and I became good friends and when she fell ill several years ago, she asked if there was anything in the museum I particularly had my eye on. Was there ever! But I was uncomfortable making the request: She had life-size statues of my comic heroes, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, in their classic poses, replete with bowler hats. I opted instead for a less extravagant selection, a set of Laurel and Hardy puppets, which I still proudly display on my bookshelf.

Before Phyllis died last year, a final wish was that her prized assortment of memorabilia would always remain as a single unit.

I didn’t mean to disrespect that wish, but I knew I could give those statues the home they deserved, where they would be truly loved. I approached her daughters, Tara and Tammi, and offered to buy the pair, certain that any offer within my means would appear paltry.

Phyllis would have never “sold” any individual item, so no money exchanged hands last week. I believe Tammi and Tara knew that their mom would have wanted them to go to a true Laurel and Hardy fan. Let’s just call it a successful open adoption.

My son and a hired strongman loaded the duo onto a flatbed truck and headed to my house. I was not certain Mary Ellen would like having these enormous artifacts in our basement.

“Wow, they are really classy looking,” she said, words she has generally reserved for the likes of Cary Grant and Gregory Peck.

We discussed whether Stan and Ollie should be placed on either side of our TV in the basement. We chose instead for them to always be next to each other.

Actually, history had already decided that.

Beware of ‘one-ring’ calls — If it seems you can’t go a day without receiving unwanted phone calls, you’re not alone. Robocalls are worse than ever. Now, the Federal Communications Commission warning of a new fraud tactic known as the “one-ring” scam.

Criminals dial and hang up quickly after the first ring so the recipient doesn’t have time to answer. If the scam goes according to plan, the victim will call back the mysterious number, inadvertently opening up expensive toll charges. Robocalls use the number 222, the nation code of the West African nation Mauritania. Hitting “ignore” on phone calls from foreign sources is an easy way to avoid robocalls.

Jr. Civic presents ‘Shrek The Musical Jr.’

After growing up, the THEATER North Central High School graduate became a Jr. Civic adult to work with production.

“I moved to Chicago to do children’s theater a few years ago,” she said. “But I came back this summer because I’m getting married. I asked Brent (Marty) if I could do the show. This would be my eighth Jr. Civic production to stage manage.”

Jr. Civic Theatre will present “Shrek The Musical Jr.” June 21 to 26 in a Mainstage production at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. There will be nine performances. Cast members range in age from 7 to 14. “‘Shrek’ is a great show for kids because there are a lot of great featured roles,” Rae said. “There is a lot of good music to work with.”

Marty, who is directing, said there are 52 cast members.

“This might be the largest cast we’ve had, and I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” he said. “They’re a good group, they love the show and love the theater.”

Anna Wagner, a Carmel resident who will be a Creekside Middle School eighthgrader this fall, is cast as Storyteller No. 2.

“I enter the scene and set the story,” Wagner said. “Then, the storyteller kind of pops in and pops out and helps narrate the story.”

Wagner has been acting at Jr. Civic since she was 8 years old.

“I do musical theater at my middle school and I do Beef & Boards productions,” she said.

Maddux Morrison, who will be a Noblesville High School freshman, plays a Duloc citizen and the Pied Piper.

“I saw it at Beef & Boards and it looked fun,” Morrison said. “I also saw it on Netflix because the Broadway musical is on it.

The music is great.”

Morrison started performing in Jr. Civic productions in fourth grade.

Actor-comedian Kevin James’s comedy tour will stop at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Palladium at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

James is being added to the season as a special event. Tickets are available now with a subscription to the 2019-20 Center Presents season. Patrons can purchase tickets when the show goes on sale to the general public in August.

James began his career as a stand-up comedian on the Long Island comedy scene.

After being discovered at the 1996 Montreal Comedy Festival, he signed a network development deal to create his own sitcom.

In other Center news, Carmel-based Allied Solutions will continue to serve as the lead sponsor of the annual Center Presents performance. “Teen Fiona doesn’t have many speaking lines, but she is part of a trio of the Fionas, and I get to do wonderful harmonies with super-talented girls to make the song sound elaborate,” Connor said. “It’s thrilling.”

Connor was familiar with the show because she did it before with Christian Youth Theater when she was 9 years old.

“I was Baby Bear and that was my first big role ever,” she said. “I am so excited to be teen Fiona, because when I was younger, I always wanted to be one of the Fionas. The trio song is challenging but it’s worth the work and I can’t wait to perform it with the other Fionas.”

Sadie Cohen, Carmel, plays young Fiona, and Isabel Casciani, Zionsville, plays Fiona as an adult.

A.J. Wilson, who will be a North Central High School freshman, plays Shrek.

“I also played Shrek in my school musical (at St. Richard’s School) in February,” Wilson said. “I like the songs and I like the range he has from very high notes to lower notes.”

YAP PRESENTS REVUE! Youth Artists Program Director Anne Beck came up with the concept of doing an extra show for the YAP in the summer.

“The show is a cabaret, so we dive into the lives of these fabulous young artists a bit,” Beck said. “They help write all of the content with me based on answering questions about life. This year we discussed family, where they have come from, where they could be heading.”

Beck said there is an incredible team assembled to guide, direct and lead the students into the world of cabaret.

“Kenny Shepard is directing them,” Beck said. “Tamara Wise Totty is pushing them musically to be their best, and and this year Shannon Forsell from downtown’s Cabaret (Indianapolis) is working with them a few times for tricks of Cabaret style, finesse, communication, etc.”

Nechita’s exhibition set for CV Art & Frame

The Los Angeles-based PAINTER artist took a hiatus from the business and promotional side of being an artist.

“I had still been producing a tremendous amount of work that I hadn’t had exhibitions in the (United) States,” Nechita said.

“I took time off from the chaos I’ve been a part of for so many years. It suited me well.

It’s a good thing for everyone to do. Sometimes slowing down is the best way to propel yourself forward. It gave me a chance to spend time in my studio that wasn’t dictated by deadlines or expectations from dealers. It gave me an opportunity to be with myself and re-evaluate the things I wanted to talk about in my work.”

Nechita’s “Re: Imagined,” a new collection, will be on exhibition and available for acquisition June 21 to June 30 at CV Art & Frame, 110 S. Main St., Zionsville. The exhibition begins with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. June 21. There will be meet-the-artist opportunities from 6 to 8 p.m. June 29 and from 1 to 3 p.m. June 30. There will be a children’s event June 29 from 11 a.m. to noon with Nechita.

“During the (hiatus) time, I made a lot of work and also had a child and I’ve gotten the gift of hanging out with her that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy if I had maintained before,” said Nechita, who has a 4-year-old daughter. “With all the hard work I had done before, it was gifts I was able to give myself. But the artist’s blood I have flowing through me is the need to be curious and live in the chaos.”

So, Nechita decided it was time for her to display her work again.

“I wanted to get in a gallery space and get people to see my work and see this new side of me that has come out because I’ve delved into this experience of me being a mother and this femininity that overcomes me — femininity in terms of a tenderness, or softness,” she said.

Nechita, 33, was born in Romania before moving to the U.S. when she was 1 1/2 years old. Nechita, regarded as a child prodigy who was nicknamed “Petite Picasso,” had her first solo exhibition at age 9 at the Los Angeles Library. At 11, some of her paintings were selling for more than $100,000. Eventually, one of her paintings sold for nearly

During her hiatus, Nechita completed an important public art project in Romania, which she was commissioned for two summers ago.

Nechita said she never felt pressure from her parents.

“My parents always said, ‘Let’s shut this operation down if you are too tired, exhausted or burned out,’” Nechita said.

“I always had these conversations when I felt I was too exhausted or missing out on social things.”

Nechita said because she had such a great experience she “never got lost in the quicksand.”

“We’ve worked out a (tour) system that will keep me happy and grounded enough but still give me an opportunity to showcase my work and give me the opportunity to see how people respond to it,” Nechita said. “I’m incredibly curious to see how it will be received.”

Nechita decided several years ago to craft an event for children to make art more approachable.

“I wanted to create an atmosphere where kids felt comfortable to look at art,” she said. “Observe it, like it, not like it, say what they like. It’s one of my favorite events I did.

It’s not malicious. Kids say what they think and say what they feel. I look forward to those sessions more than anything because it fills me with a new energy and new life.”

Background: This 1998 home is on Geist Reservoir in Fishers. The homeowners are retired and enjoy hosting extended family at their home.

THE CHALLENGE This home has an incredible location right on the waterfront. The homeowners are retirees with a lot of children and grandchildren who visit regularly. They wanted to expand and enhance their outdoor living space with more seating and a permanent covered dining area.

THE SOLUTION A few creative additions to the already lovely outdoor space really revved up this home’s waterfront appeal.

1. A brand-new deck and staircase were constructed, using Trex composite decking and railings. These materials are much easier to maintain than wood.

2. The roof was extended to create a screened porch; the lower level guest bedroom was expanded and now features a bay window overlooking the lake.

3. The curved design of the staircase and the stained wood beam ceilings add incredible style and coziness to the home.

4. The concrete patio was replaced with a larger paver patio and the retaining walls were redesigned and updated with coordinating stone.

Don’t call it ‘Krogers’ Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt

Saladin and the Cairo Citadel Commentary by Don Knebel The Cairo Citadel, among Egypt’s most visited sites, was erected by a ruler often considered the most important TRAVEL Kurd in history. An extraordinary medieval well named in his honor is still visible at the site.

By the time he was 37, Saladin (Salad ad-Din), a Sunni Muslim Kurd, had wrested a large block of territory east and south of the Mediterranean from Shia Muslims.

In 1175, he became the first sultan of Egypt and Syria. His immediate task was securing his capital in Cairo against attacks from the bordering Kingdom of Jerusalem, established by Christian Crusaders in 1099 after they broke through the walls of Jerusalem and massacred its Jewish and Muslim inhabitants. Saladin soon began building a walled fortress, featuring massive cylindrical bastions, to surround both Cairo and Egypt’s nearby former capital of Fustat, burned to prevent its falling to the Crusaders. From this Cairo Citadel, Saladin organized and led a military expedition that decimated Crusader forces at the Battle of Hattin in 1187 and soon recaptured Jerusa-

lem, allowing Jews and Muslims to return.

To provide water for the increasing number of people within the citadel, Saladin ordered Crusader prisoners to dig a 285-foot-deep well, with a spiral donkey stairway inside, that became known as “Joseph’s (Yusuf’s) Well” after his first name. Saladin’s immediate successors extended the walls and added mosques to the Cairo Citadel. By the 14th century, Cairo and its citadel were at the center of the Islamic world.

In 1828, Muhammad Ali, Egypt’s Ottoman ruler, began building an imposing mosque on a citadel hilltop modeled on Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, destroying monuments of his predecessors in the process. The Cairo Citadel served as the administrative center of Egypt until the late 19th century. Today’s visitors can see Joseph’s Well and three mosques and tour museums reflecting Egyptian history.

I’ve lived in Indiana for 12 years now, and, prior to that, I was born and raised in Oklahoma. In both GRAMMAR GUY places, I couldn’t help but notice the same strange phenomenon when people talked about shopping at grocery stores.

For some reason, people tend to add an “s” to the end of the name of the store.

In the Midwest, I hear Aldi’s, Meijer’s, and Kroger’s all the time. In Oklahoma, I heard several people say Walmart’s. I don’t think people are suggesting they went to multiple Kroger stores, so that’s why I wrote them as possessives instead of as plurals. Why do people do this?

It could be because some grocery stores already end in “s,” whether it’s a possessive or plural name: Whole Foods, Albertsons (which used to be possessive, but now it’s not), Trader Joe’s, Sprouts Farmers Market (no apostrophe necessary), Publix, and — my favorite — Schnucks. Schnucks, a St. Louis-based regional chain, just sounds like a word you’d call someone if you wanted to characterize him as some sort of dense

nincompoop.

On the other hand, some of these stores have their origins as possessive names. For instance, Meijer began as “Meijer’s Thrifty Acres,” although Kroger started as “Kroger Grocery and Baking Company.” Did you know Walmart was originally called “Walton’s Five and Dime?” However, we don’t call Walmart “Walton’s,” so why the “s” on the end of Walmart? Sam’s Club (founded by Walmart founder Sam Walton) is like if Walmart — which is already humungous — got exponentially bulkier, but I can’t get in because they keep denying me a membership.

My guess is adding an “s” to the end of grocery store names is a holdover from when many stores used the last name of the store owners as their names. These “last-name apostrophe s” stores were so common that many people instinctively add an “s” to the end of the grocery store name, regardless of its name or origin.
