Council debates removing zoning for The Farm

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council ended its June 6 meeting debating a last-minute addition to the agenda: the merits of redevelopment moving zoning put in place for a stalled mixed-use development known as The Farm.

Town Council President Susana Suarez proposed directing the Zionsville Plan Commission to move “swiftly” to remove planned unit development zoning approved for the 62 acres in 2013 and revert to the previous zoning, R-SF-2 residential.

The plan commission approved a development plan for the site on the southwest corSuarez ner of Michigan Road and Sycamore Street in September 2015, and Kroger has announced plans to build a Fresh Fare grocery store there. But construction has been delayed as the five Pittman siblings – who own the land – are in court to determine the fate of their $2.4 million estate that includes several properties in Zionsville and Carmel.

With the outcome of the court case unknown, Suarez said she worries that the development, which is on land designated as an important gateway to the town, would be “up for grabs” and could fall into the hands of developers who don’t have the town’s best interest in mind.

“I just don’t believe that this particular part of Zionsville is something we should leave up to chance,” she said. “We get one chance to develop this parcel, and I certainly hope we do it right.”

While sharing her concern about the future of the important project, other councilors said they didn’t see a compelling reason to change the zoning – especially on such short notice.

“People spend a lot of time and money and effort to get to the point where (the developers) are now,” said councilor Tom Schuler, who said he first heard about the proposal shortly before the meeting began. “That does create value on that particular asset, and I would hate to strip that value away for no actual valid reason I’ve heard here tonight.”

Other councilors echoed a desire for more time to consider the proposal. Some wondered why a representative from the Pittman family wasn’t present to answer questions and provide input.

Steve Pittman said June 7 that he was unaware the council was considering this issue at all, let alone discussing it publicly, and that he or another family member would have been more than willing to answer questions at the meeting.

He said he can “appreciate why concerns have risen” and confirmed that his family still intends to develop The Farm as approved by the town, even if not all of the siblings are on board.

Steve Pittman said his brother Mark Pittman, and his sister, Anne Kelton, are looking to sell their share of The Farm but that members of his family still intend to develop the project.

“Mark Pittman is one of five managers of Pittman Investors. In this instance, his views do not reflect those of the majority of managers,” Steve Pittman stated. “I and my brothers Scott and Chad Pittman, who reside in Carmel and Zionsville, respectively, plan to work within Pittman Investors to continue advancing development of The Farm project. No company action to sell The Farm or approve other developers has been taken.”

Mark Pittman, who lives in Los Angeles, denied that, stating “all of the Pittman siblings have been actively involved in the process of potentially selling the project or joint venturing with a qualified developer for more than a year.”

“Our concern is that our family doesn’t have the financing, tenant relationships or development expertise to deliver a quality project that the community would be proud of,” Mark Pittman stated, adding that the family hopes to have selected a developer within a month.

Pittman siblings have met with several developers, and all of them have committed to working within the approved PUD, Mark Pittman said.

“All of the developers we are talking with are local, and several of them have either done work in Zionsville or have active projects in Zionsville.” he stated. “From Zionsville’s perspective, nothing has changed.”

The council did not take any action on the proposal to give officials more time to research the matter and avoid a potentional legal battle of their own. Councilor Bryan Traylor said changing the zoning could thrust the town into the middle of a heated family dispute and cause more problems than it solves.

“It seems like it could definitely be used as a bargaining chip, but we don’t know for who,” he said.

Garden tour features Village

Proceeds will benefit the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, comprising the Zionsville history museum, art center and genealogical library. “I think it’s a wonderful asset to the town,�

For Zionsville resident Lana Funkhouser, this is the third time in 20 years her yard has been featured on the garden tour. “I wanted to support SullivanMunce because I appreciate all that they have brought to the community for so many years,� Funkhouser said. “(My garden) is just part of something that is a spring, summer and fall ritual,� she said. “I enjoy sharing it with people because it’s an expression of my family history here.�

Her family has owned the property since 1944.

With parking available near each home, driving also is an option. Approximately 300 people participated in the annual tour last year.

Along with the garden tour are many events at the museum. A number of donated container gardens from local nurseries will be auctioned, tablescapes from local businesses and individuals will be arranged inside and an art exhibit by the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association is on display at the art center.

Town adds two positions

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A director of community relations and a new member of the planning department will soon be among staffing the Town of Zionsville staff members. The Zionsville Town Council approved nearly $187,000 at its June 6 meeting to create the positions.

The planning position, Stevanovic which Deputy Mayor Ed Mitro described as a “second in command” to department director Wayne DeLong, will be funded through a line item previously earmarked for the Economic Development Commission, which no longer is in existence. “(Responsibilities include) managing all the projects we currently have in town,” Mitro told the council. “Quite frankly, Wayne is drowning, and he needs the help.”

On June 7, the town promoted assistant planner Janice Stevanovic into the new position

and promoted administrative assistant Chrissy Koenig to assistant planner.

“We will be looking for a new administrative assistant in the planning department and hope to fill that fairly soon,” Mitro said.

Each department will help fund the director of communications position, as that person will handle information for all of them. Mitro said he and Mayor Tim Haak have already spoken with a couple of candidates and plan to interview a Koenig few more.

The director of community relations will be responsible for writing press releases, speaking with news outlets and updating social media. The position will be in the administration department.

Councilor Tom Schuler was the lone vote against the changes. He said he understood the need for help in the planning department but believes the funds spent to hire a communications director could be better spent elsewhere, such as resurfacing roads.

Community shows support for stricken officer

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com Sgt. Dan Boutwell has been a fixture around Whitestown for 22 years. First serving as a part-time deputy town public safety marshal from 1994 to 2008, when the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Dept. was created, Boutwell then served as a part-time lieutenant detective with WMPD until joining the department as a full-time public safety officer in JanuBoutwell ary 2013.

“A household name you might say,” Whitestown Police Chief Dennis Anderson said. “Dan is that guy you know you can always count on to lend a hand regardless, day or night. An iconic figure within WMPD.” But in May, the 49-year-old Boutwell was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome following a blood infection. Guillain-Barre is a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. Weakness and tingling in the extremities are usually the first symptoms, which can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing the whole body.

admitted to the hospital and has been hospitalized ever since.

“Much like everyone fighting a debilitating attack on the body, Dan has both good and bad days. During the first couple of weeks, I

am certain he would describe them as more bad than good,” Anderson said. “This week perhaps a little more even. I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to go from total mobility to total reliance on someone else at the snap of a finger.”

To help keep his spirits up, Anderson said Boutwell’s Town Hall family has designed a big get well card. The card and a large teddy bear are in the lobby of the Whitestown Municipal Complex and are available for the public to sign through June 19. The card and bear will be delivered to Boutwell on June 20.

“Even through the pain, he tries to keep a smile and always asks, ‘How are things going?’ when you first walk in to visit him,” Anderson said. “A gentle giant who refuses to give into pain or the limits. We try to have officers visit as much as possible, and I try to go see him every other day myself.”

As for his prognosis, Boutwell and his wife, Kim, are convinced he will make a full recovery, an opinion reinforced by his doctors as well, according to Anderson.

“The bigger question now that remains unknown is the length of time his recovery will take and what that recovery looks like long term,” Anderson said. “We want him back, and back soon.”

Volunteer gets Sagamore honor

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Larry Randel of Zionsville recently received the top honor a Hoosier civilian can receive when his longtime achievement friend, David White, presented the Sagamore of the Wabash to him May 14 at the Thorntown Alumni Banquet.

White went through the process of nominating Randel for the award based on his volunteer work in Boone County and his dedication to his kids and grandkids.

“Larry’s done a lot of work for lots of different people as a volunteer,” White said. “Larry always helped coach his kids in summer activities. Now with his grandkids in the Zionsville area, one of his vows is to never miss one of their activities. When somebody like him puts in all that time, most people take that stuff for granted.”

Randel said he was quite surprised to receive the honor.

“It was a complete surprise when they made the presentation. I thought they were talking about somebody else,” he said. “I was just overwhelmed with the honor and very humbled and appreciative of the award. I know what the award means and what it

is and what it represents, and I was just so pleased and so appreciative that David went to the trouble to do that.”

Randel has been a Zionsville resident for 45 years and a Boone County resident his whole life. He attended Thorntown High School. He is a past president and vice president of the Thorntown Alumni Banquet, and he is active in Salem United Methodist Church in Zionsville. He is also the associate director of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. He assists with the Zionsville Crop Walk and the Hawk Foundation.

Panhandle pipeline still used

Originally incorporated in 1929 as Interstate Pipe Company, the entity started with 860 miles of line and planned to terminate at Minneapolis, Minn. Expansion happened quickly,

Every guy knows that some jobs need to be seasoned before being tackled. Cleaning my garage is a perfect example plain talk because it has several seemingly contradictory dimensions.

For example, the garage has never really been a garage and has never housed a car in the more than three decades we have lived here.

It has, however, always been a workshop.

There is a beautiful table saw, a fine miter saw and a lovely drill press awaiting tasks therein. It is also the place where broken things go to be fixed. Many of these also have become jobs that needed to be seasoned.

Several broken lamps, saggy shelves and a couple wobbly chairs fall into this category.

And since the garage is not a part of the house where we gather on a daily basis (we don’t eat meals, watch TV or play the occasional game of gin out there), it is also an ideal place to store things that can’t find an immediate home in some other part of the house.

As a result, the garage has accumulated uncounted boxes, bags and storage tubs on

the workbench and on top of the table saw and other tools.

This means until I deal with these boxes, bags and storage tubs, I can’t use the tools.

Nor can I fix the broken things that have been seasoning there in recent months.

All of this is motivation to tackle the garage, of course, but first I need a plan for where to start. I am working on that plan every day, or at least every time I go into the garage.

To put a fine point on it, our son just gave me a fine new garage door opener to replace the one that got struck by lightning a few years ago and sagged into a curdled, molten clump. Since then I have had to raise the door by hand, a job that has grown worse since the tension springs came unraveled sometime last winter. Installing the new door opener will solve that problem.

All I need now is a place to set up my ladder so I can install the opener. I guess that means the job has finally seasoned long enough.

In addition, interviews are now 10 minutes long, instead of six to eight minutes in the teen competition.

“So I’ve had to work on my fitness and speaking skills,” Robbins said.

Robbins will tap dance for her talent portion in the pageant.

For their talent portions, Stacy plans to do a contemporary dance and Sampson will sing.

Stacy, who competed in smaller pageants in Texas when she was younger, moved to Zionsville at the start of her freshman year.

“My mom encouraged it when I was a freshman in high school, but I never wanted to do it,” Stacy said. “This school year, she encouraged me to do it, and I said ‘I’ll do it just for you.’ I did it and really enjoyed it.”

Stacy said she enjoys hanging out with girls before the pageant.

“I’ve become friends with girls (from) all over the state from doing it,” Stacy said.

Stacy and Sampson are good friends.

Sampson, who said she was encouraged by her mother as well, qualified by winning the Miss Fall Festival contest in September.

“My mom told me I should do it, and I trusted her and tried something new,” Sampson said. “The best part is bonding with girls all over the state, and there are many scholarship opportunities, which I really appreciate. The pageant has done so much more for me than I could have ever imagined. It made me better at communication. It opened doors for me.”

ZCHS well represented among Miss Indiana contestants

“Now it’s just to experience cover story different walks of life, learn through other people and learn different ways to present myself,” said Robbins, who has been involved in the Miss America organization for five years. “But I do have that goal of one day becoming Miss Indiana. I do want to have that job experience, travel our state and be a representative and give back to this organization for all that it’s given to me.”

Robbins, a 2016 Zionsville Community High School graduate, will compete in the Miss Indiana pageant June 15 through 18 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. Marissa Stacy and Cassidy Sampson, who will be seniors at ZCHS in August, will compete for Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen. The finals in both competitions will begin at 6 p.m. June 18.

Robbins advanced to the Miss Indiana competition by winning the Miss Wabash Valley crown in her first year of eligibility. High school seniors through age 24 are eligible. She participated in Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen (age 13 through junior year) for three consecutive years. In 2015, she was one of 10 state finalists and was named Miss Con-

FR O M T HE b a c k s h o p Referendum on transit is coming There has been little coverage of this, but the long arm of government is coming after a small (for now) slice of your income for mass transit ($0.25 per $100 of income) in Hamilton County.

Boone County can’t be far behind. A referendum will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. Vote “no.” Here’s why: • Look at IndyGo as an example, and tell us when it turned a profit. You can’t, because it hasn’t. Same for Amtrak, a business disaster.

• There is much talk about building for the future, and that’s fine. We vastly prefer a privatized system with real profit-and-loss oversight.

• This isn’t discussed: Mass transit has several disadvantages, including possible threats to personal safety on the ride and in the community, irregularities in scheduling, and the fact that, in some areas, mass transit could have limited coverage and could be available during limited hours.

• Too, various types of public transit are subject to malfunctioning equipment as well as service disruptions caused by emergencies and even labor strikes.

• Traffic. It is stated that mass transit would take alternate routes. Do those include the routes motorists take to avoid the jams?

• Government usually is way off base when it comes to ridership, economic impact and other such projections.

• The rate won’t remain at $0.25 per $100 of income. They’ll just raise it “as necessary.”

It disgusts us whenever government comes after even more of our money. Typically, it has shown itself to be a poor steward of our dollars.

Running to run down Commentary by Terry Anker We run to the post office. We run to the store. We run to the school to pick up one offspring or another. We run, run, run.

Hoosier colloquialisms of “running” hither and yon aside, many of us run in honest-togoodness foot races. We run marathons (all 26 miles, 385 yards). We run half-marathons.

We run 10Ks. We run 5Ks. We run on the street and have even gone so far as to create treadmills so that we can run endless miles! The point is, one could surmise, that we run A LOT. But where does all of this running take us? Do we have an objective? Are we running toward something new and positive?

Are we running away from something frightening and shunned? Or, are we simply continuing to run because we don’t really know how to stop?

The treadmill where I have been known to log a mile or two includes a small digital screen that generates imagined hills that

the user is encouraged to surmount. They are designed to push a reluctant athlete to burn a calorie or two more. If burning calories is the goal, it works. But if we aren’t really going anywhere anyway, what’s the point of breaking a sweat?

The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not of fighting the old, but on building the new.” He has a point. We cannot run enough miles to escape our past. It exists and is permanent. However, we have enormous control over our forthcoming present – said another way, the direction and speed in which we shall run in the future. So, is all of our running getting us anywhere? Or, at the end of the day, will we be in the same place only feeling a bit more run down?

When I was a kid, I pitied the fool who wore glasses. (I also saw Rocky III in the theater multiple humor times and had a semicrush on Mr. T.) I prayed to every Catholic saint I could think of to spare me the horror of poor eyesight and the stigma that came with having “four eyes.” Later, during my short stint in the Air Force, I again pitied the kid with sub-par vision who had to exchange his contacts for hideous safety-goggles. I thanked baby Jesus that I didn’t have to deal with the added pressure of wearing “birthcontrol glasses” while trying to climb a 20-foot rope ladder under extreme duress. Then, I married a boy with terrible vision, and soon came to see that a guy in glasses is hot, plain and simple.

Maybe it was my new-found maturity, but I think it was the world simply becoming more accepting of people in glasses.

So yesterday, when my almost15-year-old son was given the news that he is a tad bit near-sighted and needs corrective lenses for school and driving, it wasn’t the social death sentence it would have been in 1982 or even 1991. Hooray for progress! And Andrew was thrilled. Sure, he was happy he wouldn’t have to always sit in the front row or continuously squint, but he was just as excited to have an excuse to wear glasses. Imagine that! The ostracizing plastic-and-glass contraptions of my youth have become the essential cool-kid accessory. As the technician helped him try on different frames, he grew more and more confident with his new look. Of course, the gal knew how to help along a sale: “Those really accentuate your jaw line.”

There’s no real point to this column except to comment on how times change. And to note that I googled Mr. T, and he still looks pretty good, even without glasses. Peace out.

Librarian requests blood donation Susan Ottinger is hoping to urge 50 people donate blood to the Red Cross on her 50th birthday.

Susan Ottinger, a librarian at Eagle Elementary, is eagerly awaiting her birthday for one special reason: 50 pints of giving back blood for 50 years.

On June 25, her birthday, Ottinger is putting on a blood drive at Salem United Methodist Church in hopes of getting 50 pints of blood donated to the Red Cross.

“For me, giving blood is super, super easy,” Ottinger said. “It is such a no-brainer way to help people. There’s always a need.”

When describing herself, Ottinger used the words “friendly, creative and helpful.” She hopes the blood drive embodies just the kind of person she strives to be.

“I thought, maybe I could do 50 good deeds for my birthday, but that just seemed like I might not be able to get that all done,” she said. “So instead, I’m going to get people to do the good deed for me.”

Ottinger said there aren’t many blood drives in Zionsville, but she still tries to donate as much as she can. Every two months, she tries to give blood.

“I think there’s just a lack of opportunity to give blood,” she said. “In Zionsville, I really have

to look hard to find a blood drive.”

The Red Cross is helping Ottinger set up the blood drive and will be there from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for anyone willing to give blood on Ottinger’s birthday.

“I hope just by reaching out to as many people as I can,” she said, “I’ll hit 50 and maybe even go past 50.”

“I don’t need more stuff,” she added. “I’ve got more than enough, but there’s always a need for blood.”

Which Wich off to fast start

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Calling it a grand opening might be considered an understatement. The new Which Wich in Whitestown has surbusiness passed its owners’ expectations in its first two months.

“In the first six weeks we opened, we have been one of the busiest Which Wiches in the country,” co-owner Lee Kleiner said. “I’ve heard from different corporate people that we are doing very well.”

According to its website, Which Wich has more than 400 stores in 39 states and 10 nations. Six of them are in Indiana.

Brian Kahn is the other co-owner of the Whitestown restaurant. Kleiner manages the day-to-day operations of the restaurant, at 6708 Whitestown Parkway, which opened April 18. Micah Brown serves as the general manager.

“Zionsville-Whitestown is growing like wildfire, and we wanted to be a part of it,” Kleiner said.

Kleiner said they did their due diligence and knew they were in a spot that could be very successful.

thought we would be this busy,” Kleiner said.

Kleiner has owned the Dairy Queen franchise in Zionsville for 16 years.

“I really love the area,” said Kleiner, who also owns DQ restaurants in Fishers, Fortville and Danville.

The restaurant is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Kleiner said he owns the rights and plans to open Which Wich franchises in Avon and Greenwood.

“We hope to open this year,” Kleiner said.

“We’re heavily looking for locations right now.”

Rush on Main now open

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com After a soft opening on May 28, Rush on Main, 112 N. Main St., is officially open for business with steady traffic each day food according to co-owner Johnny Vargo.

“We had a great crowd,” he said. “It wasn’t overwhelming for the staff.”

Vargo said he wanted employees to be comfortable with the menu and restaurant before fully advertising the opening. The restaurant serves Chicago-style food with Italian beef sliced on site. Hot dogs, burgers, salads and sandwiches round out the menu.

The restaurant will open at 11 a.m. daily, closing at “11ish” Sunday through Thursday and “1ish” on Friday and Saturday.

Start with style – Start by deciding how you’d like to prepare your meat. Smoking infuses flavor throughout the meat, while extended cook times at low temperatures make it extra tender. Smoking also lets you create unique flavors using wet and dry rubs, seasoned wood chips and planks.

Choose your cut – The most popular cuts of meat to smoke are brisket, ribs, pork shoulder or turkey, all of which are typically large in size. Guarantee a great experience with new Omaha Steaks Brisket for smoking, which was created with the competitive barbecue and smoking circuit in mind.

Ready your rub – For the best results, brush meat with cooking oil or another liquid ingredient (such as yellow mustard) before adding the rub. Coat both sides with rub.

Set up the smoker – Preparation varies from one recipe to the next, but one constant is the importance of maintaining a steady temperature. As you prepare your charcoal, be conscious of where you’ll place wood chips or other flavor enhancers.

Ancho Chile Rubbed Smoked Beef Brisket Total time: 13-16 hours Ingredients: 1 whole Omaha Steaks Brisket for smoking, 2 cups white vinegar, 2/3 cup yellow mustard, 3/4 cup Omaha Steaks Ancho Chile Rub, 4 cups Ancho Chile Smoking Spritzer, divided (recipe below), 8 cups apple or cherry wood chips, soaked in water Directions: Remove brisket from bag and rinse with white vinegar then water. Dry completely using paper towels. Slather brisket with yellow mustard. Rub generously with ancho chile rub and inject with one cup Ancho Chile Smoking Spritzer. Prepare smoker using one chimney of pure lump charcoal fully lit and one chimney of pure lump charcoal unlit.

Make sure water pan is full and adjust vents until smoker maintains a temperature between 225 and 250 F. Place brisket on smoker, fat side up, and brush smoking spritzer over top. Every hour check smoker temp, squirt with smoking spritzer and add handful of wood chips. After three hours, flip brisket, fat side down, and squirt with spritzer. After six hours, flip brisket, fat side up. Wrap heavy-duty foil around the last 3-4 inches of brisket tip to prevent it from drying out. Restock water pan, and add lump charcoal as needed. Adjust vents until temperature is between 225 and 250 F. Beginning at eight hours, check internal temperature every hour, and apply spritzer and wood chips. Between 11-13 hours, when internal temperature is between 195 and 200 F, if fork slides easily into brisket, it is done.

Let brisket rest for one to two hours before slicing and serving.

Mini-golf makes a comeback at the Indianapolis Museum of Art Commentary by Jenni Ingersoll The Indianapolis Museum of Art has created an Indiana-inspired mini-golf course. Mini Golf at The IMA celebrates family fun the 200th birthday of our state with holes themed around Hoosier history, heritage and landmarks. Designed by local and regional artists, the interactive art experience remains open through Oct. 30.

Situated outside on the IMA Sculpture Court, instead of windmills and water-traps, the obstacles on these 18-hole greens include electric guitars, covered bridges and chimes tuned to play (“Back Home Again in Indiana”). A whimsical likeness to President Benjamin Harrison, a farm field dotted with miniature wind turbines and a layout of iconic landmarks including Monument Circle and the Speedway oval make obvious connections to Indiana, while the “Great Squirrel Invasion of 1822” is an unfamiliar state fact. A nod to Hoosier native and “New York Times” crossword puzzle editor allows golfers to play the crossword maze and solve the puzzle as well.

Looking for the perfect dessert to bring to the next barbeque? Try this simple layer bar recipe.

Servings: 16 Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups sifted flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup shortening, 1 egg, milk, 2/3 cup crushed corn flakes, 1/2 cup Tree Top or Seneca Apple Sauce, 5 cups sliced, peeled apples, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon Glaze: 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 2 tablespoons lemon juice Directions: Sift together flour, sugar and salt. Cut shortening in with pastry blender or two knives. Put egg yolk into measuring cup and add a little big of milk to make 2/3 cup.

Add to shortening mixture. Mix just enough until dough shapes into a ball. Roll out half the dough into 15 x 11-inch rectangle. Transfer to baking sheet. Cover with corn flakes. Mix

apple sauce together with apple slices, and add mixture on top of corn flakes. Mix sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle over apple mixture.

Roll out other half of dough for top crust.

Place over apples. Pinch edges together. Beat egg white until stiff and spread on top crust.

Bake in hot 400°F oven for 40 minutes. Cut into 16 squares.

Combine confectioners’ sugar and lemon juice to make glaze. While hot, drizzle glaze over top.

Smell, sip, swish: Carmel readies for annual Art of Wine

By Desiree Williams editorial@youarecurrent.com Wine lovers: mark your calendars. Art of Wine will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. July 16 in the Carmel Arts & Design drinks District.

“The Art of Wine event was one the city generated to encourage large groups of people to come down and enjoy Main Street in a festival-like setting,” said Melanie Lentz, project manager for the Community Relations and Economic Development Department.

The event is open to all ages, but those 21 and older can purchase a wine glass and a wristband for $20 on arrival at any of the four checkout points. There will be booths set up along Main Street featuring each winery. The booths offer a variety of wines for tasting to those with wristbands, as well as the option to purchase wines by the bottle.

“We’re marrying art with music and food and wine,” Lentz said. “It’s a good way to tie in the Arts & Design District and bring it all together.”

that 18 wineries were asked to participate this year and 5,000 wine glasses were ordered in preparation for a large crowd.

“You can bring your entire family to the event and walk freely throughout the event,” Lentz said. “It just creates a good, close environment.”

Fourteen wineries have confirmed their participation this year, including Hopwood Cellars from Zionsville.

For those younger than 21, the restaurants and galleries throughout the district will be open. There will be a concert in the PNC bank lot at the end of the night as well.

‘Back to the 80s’ to open June 17

The Rising Star production features actors ages 20 and under.

“The main challenge to the cast is that these songs are all about 30 years (old), and while they are extremely familiar to me, as I graduated high school in 1989, many of the songs are brand new to these kids,” Haas said. “I have to remember that even though I can still sing most of them by heart from when I was a teenager, it takes some time for them to get them down. There are also a lot of pop references from the 1980s that I have to explain to them because they do not understand them, while their parents will likely get most of the jokes right away.”

CCP’s production of “Back to the 80s” runs from June 17 to June 26 at Carmel Community Playhouse at Clay Terrace, 14299 Clay Terrace Blvd., Suite 140.

Kelly is going to attend Northern Kentucky University in 2016-17 on a scholarship to study theater.

“While I have acted with my daughter before, this my first time directing her,” Haas said.

The musical also includes leads such as Carmel High School students Cameron Clark, Lily Wallack, Brooke Porter and Clay Middle School student Cara Nowlin.

“The show is light-hearted and upbeat, and the cast seems to be bonding even though this is the first time many of them have met,” Haas said.

It’s that time of year again: real estate season. You may have noticed more houses going interiors up for sale in your community. If you’re considering hiring a realtor and selling your home, are you ready? Is your home reflecting what buyers are looking for?

If your budget is modest and you want a quick update, consider tackling a small or half bath first. There are attractive tile flooring options that won’t break the bank, such as vinyl tile or vinyl planks. Stylish, modern faucets can be replaced in an afternoon and still provide an updated look. Is your bathroom still sporting can lights or spotlights from the ’80s? It might be time to let those go. If you’re not familiar with electrical projects, it’s worth it to hire a professional to get it done right the first time. New lighting is not only fashionable but can brighten up your space immensely.

If your bathrooms are in good shape and you have a bigger budget, you might focus on your kitchen. If your

This means the next two months tend to be the busiest for our pesky little friends. Who wants to be unable to enjoy an evening on their patio without covering up in clothing and coating themselves in chemicals? With that in mind our company would like to give you some tips to keep your property mosquito free.

• Eliminate stagnant water and drainage – Mosquitoes require water for breeding. Ensure that there are not areas of stagnant water on your property such as clogged gutters, drainage ditches, low spots in your yard that collect water or even a flower pot.

• Remove clutter and debris – These could be as simple as tarps, children’s toys collecting water, a bird bath, an inoperable fountain or a bucket sitting upright in the yard. We recommend changing birdbath water weekly, ensuring toys are put away in a manner that

they will not collect water, keeping tarps taught so that water will not puddle and flipping over buckets and containers.

• Ground cover and grass – Keep tall grass, weeds, and brush trimmed around your home. These are all areas where mosquitoes rest throughout the day.

• Don’t rely on bug zappers or citronella – These solutions are not very effective for mosquitoes like they are for other insects. This is because mosquitoes that are biting you are attracted to your heat and carbon dioxide, which cannot be masked with these things. Zappers catch some mosquitoes just by chance, but mosquitoes are not attracted to light like moths, flies, etc.

• Utilize residential mosquito services – Take back your yard with large-scale services to treat your entire backyard.

The house Maria built Commentary by Don Knebel Some Americans may remember that Maria Theresa of Austria was the mother of Marie Antoinette, who lost her head travel during the French Revolution.

Most don’t know that Maria Theresa built a luxurious summer residence inspired by the French palace whose excesses contributed to her daughter’s demise.

In the 16th century, the Habsburg family, which ruled much of Central Europe until 1918, acquired a tract of land southwest of Vienna, called Schönbrunn, for royal hunting expeditions. In 1688, Leopold I commissioned a design for a grandiose palace on the site, intended to rival the Palace of Versailles.

Financial realities prevented him from realizing his dream. When Leopold’s son, Charles VI, died without sons, his daughter, Maria Theresa, succeeded him. In 1743, she began building a baroque palace at Schönbrunn based on the original designs, eventually adding a floor to accommodate her 16 children, the second youngest of which was Marie Antoinette. When completed, Schönbrunn Palace contained 1441 lavishly appointed rooms, twice

as many as Versailles. A Great Gallery evoked Versailles’ famous Hall of Mirrors.

The Schönbrunn Palace has long played host to history. In 1762, Mozart, then six years old, played the harpsichord for Maria Theresa and her family in a mirrored parlor, jumpstarting his career. In both 1805 and 1809, Napoleon lived in the palace after capturing Vienna.

After Napoleon was exiled, his son by Maria Theresa’s great granddaughter, whose father Napoleon had defeated, occupied Napoleon’s favorite bedroom. In 1961, President Kennedy and Premier Khrushchev met in the Great Gallery to try to reduce tensions following the Bay of Pigs.

Forty of the most important rooms of Schönbrunn Palace are open to the public, providing insight into the life of Maria Theresa, one of the greatest European leaders of her time. A trip to Vienna is not complete without a visit to Schönbrunn.
