Little League looks elsewhere for headquarters

By Sara Baldwin Schatz sara@youarecurrent.com In the wake of a petition started by Zionsville residents last week, Little League International has announced DEVELOPMENT that it will begin the search for an alternative site for their headquarters. it had been proposed on a 15-acre property at 8602 E. County Road 500 South in Zionsville.

During a June 5 Zionsville Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, Little League Chief Financial Officer Dave Houseknecht read a statement from Little League International CEO Stephen Keener.

“Little League International believes it’s in everyone’s best interest to begin exploring other options, both with the Zionsville Local Organizing Committee and potentially elsewhere within our central region,” it stated.

“Through the relocation process, we have become increasingly aware of animosity and ill feelings from the Zionsville community toward the proposed site for our potential relocation,” the statement continued.

For months, remonstrators have expressed concerns with a Pulte development tied to the Little League project. If the project gained town approval, Pulte planned to purchase the entire site and donate a portion of it to Little League International for the Central Region headquarters. It would then build a 78-home development next to the headquarters and count the fields as its required green space.

Pulte’s proposed zoning appeal included reduced front yard and building line setbacks and reduced perimeter street buffers. However, at the June 5 meeting, Pulte asked for a continuance until the July meeting.

Concerns from nearby residents A group of Zionsville residents created the website zvilleprojectconcerns.com and launched a petition last week. Apprehensions include increased density and traffic, decreased property values and more. The petition itself, attached to the website, is titled “Oppose Pulte Fields” and did not mention Little League International. It has been updated to clarify that it is not in opposition to Little League, only Pulte. However, zvilleprojectconcerns.com outlines several bullet

Schiferl stated that he thought it was wrong for the town to sell this project as an economic benefit to Zionsville, because visitors would likely spend money on food and hotels in Whitestown.

Teen suspected of fatal Lebanon shooting

A 16-year-old suspect has been taken into custody by the Lebanon Police Dept. for alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Jamie Dover.

INVESTIGATION The Boone County Communications Center received a 911 call at 1:17 p.m. June 4, reporting a shooting in the parking lot of J&J Muffler at 1404 West South St. in Lebanon.

When police arrived, a 17-year-old male was found dead in the parking lot outside of a vehicle. He was later identified as Dover.

Two other juveniles were present when the shooting occurred.

Both were taken into custody without incident. It was learned through the investigation that one of the juveniles witnessed the shooting. The other, a 16-year-old, is considered a suspect.

Investigators are continuing to work to determine the events leading up to the shooting. The suspect is being held in a juvenile detention facility, with formal charges pending. Investigators are working with the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if charges will be filed.

“Due to the nature of juvenile involvement, we cannot release any more information at this time,” LPD Sgt. Ben Phelps said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Zionsville residents expressed concern after two parks in neighboring towns were vandalized. There was a temporary closure of West Park in Carmel May 29 as park crews cleaned SAFETY up damage to toilets, sinks, mirrors and changing stations the previous evening. That same day, spraypainted messages were found on a baseball dugout at Whitestown Lions Club Park.

Whitestown Lions Club Park park is managed by the Whitestown Lions Club, and Zionsville Baseball Club helps with maintenance.

Whitestown Fire Dept. also helped to re-paint the dugout.

Nathan Messer, Whitestown’s parks director, said cameras will be installed in future parks that are planned, including the Main Street Park in Whitestown and the Anson Industrial Park, among others. “(Cameras are) a deterrent for a lot of issues, from vandalism to bullying on the playground,” Messer said. “It’s hard to put a price on public safety.”

Matt Dickey, parks director for the Town of Zionsville, weighed in on the recent vandalism, saying that it is not typically a problem for Zionsville.

“Ours have been smaller incidences,” Dickey said. “Vandalism is an unfortunate reality for parks. Most often it’s young adults, middle school to college age, doing this. The real key is to make sure individuals are raised in a way that they are respectful of property.”

Solar springing up in Village

Bob McKinney, president of Johnson Melloh Solutions, which installed some of the panels, said he’s noticed a yearly increase in residential solar panel installation despite Indiana’s Senate Bill 309 that eliminates net metering, which requires utility companies to pay solar users for excess energy created by their solar panels.

“You could actually sit outside on a really sunny day and watch the meter go backwards,” Village resident Mervyn Cohen said.

The benefit of net metering for homeowners is the ability to more quickly pay for the panels, which the Cohens estimate cost $30,000 after tax rebates. The legislation means homeowners installing new panels will be reimbursed at a lower amount moving forward.

The Cohens became interested in solar options when their church undertook a solar panel project. They installed the first set of panels in their home six years ago.

“We’re pretty green in lots of ways,” Janet Cohen said.

McKinney doesn’t believe the legislation will impact the future of residential solar panel installation.

“Our pace of solar (installation) in the first quarter is exceeding the last quarter of 2017,” he said.

McKinney said residential solar energy is in the early stages of growth in Indiana.

“We don’t think our residential market has even begun to hit the tipping point,” he said.

As of 2017, more than 1,100 homes in Indiana had solar PV systems, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Local contractors estimate 20 of those homes are in Zionsville.

The Zionsville Town Council held its monthly meeting June 4 at Town Hall, 1100 W. Oak St. What happened: Zionsville resident Kevin Schiferl appeared before the Town Council to remonstrate against last month’s approved rezoning of 15 acres at 8602 E 500 S to accommodate a new headquarters for the Little League International Central Region Headquarters, citing issues with financial transparency and a 76-home Pulte development that is tied to the project.

What it means: Schiferl is representing a group of residents that have been speaking out against the development, specifically because Pulte Homes is planning to purchase the entire parcel, build 76 homes on approximately 40 acres and donate the remaining 15 acres to Little League. The remonstrators have expressed concern about a lack of transparency from both the builders and the Town of Zionsville, and disapproval that Pulte has requested a variance to use the Little League land to meet open space requirements for the proposed neighborhood. Fifteen acres determined for the Little League International Headquarters was approved in May, but the remaining zoning changes have been continued.

“It is my duty as a neighbor, husband, father, citizen and voter to request that this town council do two important things. Number one, adopt a resolution that no public funds from any town-controlled account be allowed to be expended for the Pulte/Little League project without public and transparent procedure in place, with public input allowed,” Schiferl said. “And two, to launch an investigation into how this commitment of public monies to this project came about, without this fiscal body knowing about it.

Who made the commitment, whether it is at all documented anywhere, when it was made, and how much is this going to cost in funds under town control? We’ve heard no numbers, only generalities.”

What happened: The council considered on first reading three ordinances establishing three funds that will receive monies from residential developments.

What it means: The council first approved an ordinance (2018-05) establishing the Hampshire Road Fund. The subdivision is required to fund a portion of off-site road improvements. The funds have already been received. The second ordinance, (2018-06), is for money received from Inglenook and Vonterra subdivisions for a water main extension. The third ordinance (2018-07) approved

was for the Inglenook Entrance Fund. Because the Zionsville Road construction project is very close to the construction timing of the Inglenook, and the road is going to change alignment drastically, a value was agreed upon for the entrance. The town of Zionsville will construct the entrance to the subdivision with money from Inglenook but as part of the Zionsville Road project.

What happened: Amendments were approved to the Zionsville Parks and Recreation 5-Year Park Master Plan, including a three-tier plan that prioritizes Overley-Worman Park trail extensions.

What it means: The Parks and Recreation held three public meetings earlier this year to survey residents on their park “wants and wishes.” Eighty-four percent of respondents asked for more land for parks. More than 90 percent indicated that walking facilities were important. This helped guide the department to develop a list of priori-

ties for funding. Priority A involves OverleyWorman park trail extensions to Eagle Creek and a trailhead on Zionsville Road that aims to tie into the Rail Trail, allowing easier access to the Monon Trail. The Big 4 Rail Trail extension to Whitestown also is prioritized.

All projects will still have to be individually approved.

Garden Party feeds local families

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com With warm summer weather comes beautiful, abundant gardens. The Lebanon Community of Shalom will GARDEN showcase local homeowners’ gardens to raise money for its organization. It will host a Garden Party and Garden Tour to celebrate summer blooms.

LCS started in 2006 with a mission of feeding the community. It offers meals twice a week at the Shalom House and meal delivery on Saturdays. It also provides lunches for students in the summer through the Shalom Kids Sack Lunch Program.

“Through the summer we have 300 to 500 kids come through,” said Lisa Williams, program coordinator at LCS. “Last year, we served 4,580 kids, and that’s 22,900 meals.

The Shalom House did a little over 13,000 meals last year.”

The Garden Party kicks off at 6 p.m June 15 at Maplelawn Farmstead in Zionsville.

“This is the second year for this,” Williams said. “We have drinks, hors d’oeuvres, a live jazz band playing. We have a lot of fun yard games for people to play. We have a silent auction that we’re going to be doing. It’s a really fun evening.”

The ZEF Prize Patrol was on the move last month, awarding grants from the Zionsville Education Foundation. More than $25,000 in grants were presented to six recipients, surprising teachers in their classrooms throughout the day. The ENL team with Zionsville Community Schools received a Strong in Every Language grant, which will provide translation technology in all schools so that information can be clearly and quickly communicated to non-English-speaking parents. ENL teacher Kris Barksdale said that 52 languages are spoken in the school system. Previously, translators were hired on a case-by-case basis to assist with translation. The technology should allow newsletters to be shared in each family’s preferred language. Boy Scout honors war-era women

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Carter Sugar, a member of Boy Scout Troop 358 and Eagle Scout candidate, said he had always thought about LEGION building a new fireplace for the American Legion Post 79 as his Eagle Scout Service Project. Next year, his idea will become a reality. He has already begun leading construction of the project.

Sugar conceived and designed Freedom’s Fire Sugar at The Legion, a place to honor women who have served the community and the nation from the home front.

Freedom’s Fire at The Legion will consist of a raised plaza and ceremonial fire circle to honorably retire America flags.

Freedom’s Fire will be dedicated to the women “who kept the home fires burning and assembly lines churning” in support of American troops on Mother’s Day of next year and also will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary. Many of the women’s names will

Carter said his older brother, Jackson, created Memorial Plaza at the American Legion Post 79 for his Eagle Scout Service Project and he wanted to make sure his project also recognized the service of women, who didn’t directly serve in the military but helped on the home front.

“There’s a lot of women empowerment going on and I wanted to make sure they were recognized for their service to give women equal recognition,” said Sugar, 15.

Freedom’s Fire at The Legion will consist of three engraved limestone reflection benches surrounding a masonry fire circle.

The 19-foot by 19-foot measurements are in recognition of the year the American

Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919.

“While members of the Auxiliary have served selflessly for decades, we are deeply honored by this special recognition during our centennial year,” Rita Wilson, president of the Post 79 Auxiliary, stated in a press release. “Long before women were allowed to serve our country in uniform, grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters and daughters have nurtured and sustained the home front and we continue to do so today.”

ZMS Equestrian Team places third in nationals

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Four members of the Zionsville Equestrian Middle School team traveled to Syracuse, N.Y. in late April for the HORSE RIDING Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) Nationals. The team of Emma Repenning, Sadie Penix, Casey Burns and Annie Yorgen placed third out of 18 teams.

“This was an amazing accomplishment for our team. We show throughout the season in a very competitive region. Making it out of our regionals was incredible,” coach Emily Ahlfeld said. “Once you get into the postseason the competition continues to grow. To be able to finish third in a field of 18 teams was truly incredible.”

IEA is different than a regular horse show in that riders “draw” a horse prior to competing, which creates the challenge of riding a horse they aren’t familiar with and adjusting to the horse.

Repenning, 15, said the competition was “an amazing opportunity to compete with some of the best girls in the nation.”

hard,” she said. “I owe a huge thank you to coach Emily, who is such a great coach, loves our team so much and supports us in so many ways throughout whole season.”

For Penix, 12, the competition was “surreal.”

“It was such an honor and privilege to be surrounded by people who love this sport

with the same level of passion I have,” she said. “Getting the chance to represent Zionsville was incredible, and it was all I’d imagined and more.”

Burns, 12, who has been riding since age 3, placed second in the competition, earning five points for the team.

“It’s crazy that people come from all over the United States to compete,” Burns said. “I never thought I’d make it to nationals, so it was definitely a dream come true.”

“It was such an honor to be able to ride and represent the team at nationals. It was one of my greatest experiences and I’ll remember it forever,” Yorgen said. “It was an awesome learning experience and I’ve made so many friends along the way.”

The team was formed four years ago at Sierra Woods Farm in Zionsville. It practices once a month, and all riders are required to take weekly lessons at a hunter/jumper barn.

“Riding takes a lot of hard work and focus. It’s a different challenge every time you get on a horse,” Ahlfeld said. “The team allows the girls to share their love of horses with each other and to support each other throughout the season.”

Enduring fondness for fast cars Commentary by Ward Degler

Our village hosted the Porsche parade last weekend. Every year the proud owners of these zippy little sports PLAIN TALK cars line up their steeds along the brick street and talk Porsche with one another as hundreds of onlookers ooh and ahh.

My sports car period included two Porsches. Alas, the period ended when I realized you don’t own a sports car, it owns you. I spent all my time and a lot of my money on my cars. I endlessly changed the oil, replaced the brakes, and lovingly washed, waxed and polished every square inch of the vehicle.

It was good fun and totally absorbing.

And, I confess, my heartbeat still revs up close to the red line whenever sports cars show up on my radar.

I’ve owned a lot of cars since those days.

Family sedans mostly; sensible Chevys, sedate Fords and lumbering Buicks.

But my favorite car of all time was none of these, not even a Porsche. My one and only true love was a car I never even got to drive — a 1935 Lincoln.

It was May 4, my 12th birthday. Our sleepy little town was experiencing a rare burst of energy because the Shell Oil Company was

putting a pipeline through the area.

Pipeliners, as we called them, took up room and board with many of the townspeople. Our renters were the Smiths, a leatherfaced welder everyone called Hardrock, and his wife, You-all. Both born and raised in Kilgore, Texas.

Hardrock and the other pipeliners loved to play poker and usually invited men from the town to join in. The stakes were sometimes hefty. Lots of money, and on this occasion, a 1935 Lincoln that had been left at the local Chevy dealer during the Depression and never reclaimed.

When Hardrock learned it was my birthday and that I was born in 1935, he insisted on giving me the car he had won the night before.

Sadly, Dad wouldn’t let me keep it and Hardrock sold it to someone else. But for about a week, I was the most popular kid in town, and I spent a lot of time in the basement of the Chevy dealership sitting behind the wheel of my very own car.

Hometown Competitors Pageant vet Samantha Robbins heads group of 4 Zionsville contestants in Miss Indiana, Miss Outstanding Teen contests

The 2016 Zionsville Community High School graduate is competing in the Miss Indiana pageant COVER STORY for the third consecutive year. Prior to that, Robbins competed on the same stage at Zionsville Performing Arts Center in the Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen pageant for three years.

“It keeps getting better every year,” said Robbins, who will be a Ball State University junior this fall. “I’m shooting high this year. My main goal is to be Miss Indiana. I think it’s a job I can do well. I’ve been preparing for it for a long time.”

Robbins will be joined by Zionsville resident Kaylee Arthur in the Miss Indiana competition. The winner advances to the Miss America pageant in September. Zionsville residents Claire Nieshalla and Shaylee Barnes will compete in the Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen pageant. The pageants will be held June 13 to 16 in the ZIonsville Performing Arts Center. Preliminary competition will be held June 13, 14 and 15 with the finals June 16.

Robbins’ platform is substance abuse prevention. It is called “Control Alt Delete”.

“It means taking control of your life, choosing alternatives to drug culture and delete negativity,” said Robbins, whose previous platform was D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). “A lot of my family struggled with addiction. That inspired me to prevent it in young people.”

Robbins, whose talent is tap dancing, qualified by winning the Miss Southern Heartland title. She said the pageant is always the culmination of a year of hard work.

“The best part is having the work come to fruition,” she said.

Arthur, who will be a Purdue junior, graduated from Frankfort High School in 2016. Her family moved to ZIonsville two years ago.

Arthur started doing pageants when she was 6 years old and competed for Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen in 2015.

“I’ve been doing pageants for so long, I can’t imagine my life without them,” Arthur said. “I started doing pageants because I have a hearing disability.”

That caused Arthur to have some social development issues.

“We entered a pageant with an interview portion to force me to talk to people and talk for myself,” she said. “It took some time, but eventually I went from my family trying to force me to speak to trying to get me to shut up.”

Arthur’s platform, “Change for a Cause,” is about volunteering. She qualified by winning the Miss Purdue pageant.

Miss Outstanding Teen competitors Nieshalla’s platform is substance abuse prevention with an acronym of RAIN: Refraining from substance abuse, Acknowledging the consequences, Implementing good decisions so we can Navigate well though life.

“Through extended family, I have experienced the difficulties and pain that comes through substance abuse,” said Nieshalla, who is homeschooled and will be a senior this fall. “I have some family who have come out of that dark hole and some that are still in it. I’ve definitely seen the effect that it has. I chose it because it’s not only an issue in our community, but also in our state and nation as well.”

Nieshalla organized a prescription drug take-back day at ZCHS. “It was the first of its kind being held at a high school

and it was a huge success,” Nieshalla said. “We gathered over 254 pounds of unused prescription drugs. This was an opportunity to raise awareness for parents and families to clean out medicine cabinets.”

Nieshalla qualified by winning the Miss Fall Festival crown in Zionsville.

“The Miss America organization has taught me so much through interview and communication skills,” Nieshalla said.

“It’s built my confidence.”

Nieshalla sings and writes her own songs. She will sing her original song “Rain” during the pageant.

Barnes, who will be a ZCHS sophomore this fall, has been competing for two years.

“I really like the (pageant) community,” said Barnes, who qualified by winning Miss Heart of Indiana Outstanding Teen. “I’ve made so many friends doing it.”

Barnes’ platform is mental health awareness.

“I’m trying to have schools recognize mental health issues,” she said, “and trying to get schools to incorporate mental health awareness more in their curriculum.”

In the many trips we have made around the sun, our driving skills have been tested by thousands of miles and countless hours.

Many are well into the hundreds of thousands – racked up by years of summer vacations, trips to grandma’s house and carpools for club sports. A few can even boast to be million-milers. These souls have logged a good deal of their lives behind the wheel – and, invariably, behind other motorists. In this mass accumulation of experience and memory, patterns of human behavior begin to emerge.

We’ve all seen folks stop, having missed the proper turn from the roundabout they are circumnavigating, seemingly perplexed by what the next step is. After a momentary pause to reconsider the appropriate subsequent action, the bewildered driver lunges back into motion, rounding again until the proper exit reappears. Recently, an auto antecedent to my own was informed by some chirping Siri that the proscribed exit had passed. Therefore, this determined person not only stopped but threw the car into reverse – seemingly undeterred by the danger or peculiarity of the act.

Likewise, we find ourselves cut off in traffic only to have the interloper promptly apply the brakes. It seemed they had nowhere to go but needed to be in front.

Gen. George S. Patton Jr. is credited with proclaiming, “Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way.” What is it about human nature that so routinely and intentionally keeps us from committing to any one of these camps? When should we lead? When should we follow? And, when should we step aside? Are we making the choice or simply backing up in a roundabout?

A couple years ago I chipped one of my already-crooked, bottom-front teeth. Luckily, my horse-sized chompers hide the snaggletooth for photo ops, but it’s HUMOR quite noticeable when I talk, which, unfortunately, I have to do on occasion. I could have it filed down, but even pretend manicures make me flinch.

My dentist, however, said not to worry, dubbing me “charmingly imperfect.” I’ve decided to adopt this phrase as a mantra and apply it to all of my less-than-ideal attributes. The thigh cellulite that even half-Ironman training wouldn’t destroy? Charmingly imperfect. Those laugh lines and age spots that no amount of Retin-A will vanquish?

Charmingly imperfect! And how about my practically non-existent belly button? Definitely imperfect but seriously charming!

The point is, even though Photoshop could charge me extra, these are the features that make me me. And now that I’m in my 40s, I’m finding it much easier to simply embrace them. In fact, I think it’s kind of cool to walk around with charmingly imperfect characteristics, like unusually long second toes and an Osgood-Schlatter calcium “tumor” on my kneecap. Jealous?

As a side note, I thought I had exhausted my list of charmingly imperfect attributes, but then the spouse read this and suggested a few more – bubble-butt, slight overbite, flat chest, invisible eyelashes … OK, OK, I get it. Thank you, Doo. You’re awesome.

So, yes, pre-varicose veins are creating a perverted but oddly accurate map of the Mississippi River Delta on my milky-white calves, but, by God, I am charmingly imperfect — jacked-up teeth and all. Peace out.

Artist’s legacy lives on

They never die. That’s the thing about artists.

SULLIVANMUNCE So it is with Zionsville’s great artist, Kellar Mahaney, known to us as Edie.

She died in November 2017 but lives on in the tremendous art she left behind. Do yourself a favor and get to the SullivanMunce Cultural Center before the exhibit ends June 23. Feast your soul and eyes upon the joyful celebration of color that is Edie’s legacy.

I met Edie in about 1980. She’d been hired as founding director of the Zionsville Munce Art Center (now the SullivanMunce Cultural Center). I did a story about her and the new art center. As I recall, I photographed her holding the keys to the place.

At that time, Edie personified the Village to me — where everybody knew everybody, and Main Street was where we all met. She told me she had a dream to someday have a studio and spend her time just painting.

Decades later, her husband Jack created a studio above their garage. Her work soared in acclaim and value. Soon, she had her studio on Main Street.

Her art was displayed in prestigious

The flag represents cherished freedom and our resolve to protect it at all costs.

Our nation’s flag is particularly celebrated on June 14, known as Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

Our nation’s flag reveals a history of struggle, suffering, lives sacrificed and crippled bodies for freedom’s sake. It is the banner representing our religious freedom, Bill of Rights and Constitution.

In the late 1800s, schools across the U.S. observed Flag Day programs to contribute to the Americanization of immigrant children. The children were taught with respect to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

shows and won numerous awards.

What I remember most, though, is very personal. I used to write a column, “The Question of the Week.” Every week I went out with my camera and photographed six people and asked them the “question of the week.”

Before I left the house I sat down at my kitchen table and answered the question myself. One week the question was, “Who do you know you’d like to be more like?”

My answer was “Edie Mahaney.” The reason was simple: Whenever I met Edie on the street, my day was better. Her hug was life-affirming.

I still want to be more like Edie.

Take me out to the Hall of Fame Commentary by Dick Wolfsie David Raymond was a fanatic, or, more precisely, a Phanatic (The Philly Phanatic is the official mascot of the HUMOR Philadelphia Phillies). For 17 years, he lived inside the iconic costume, taunting umpires, mocking the competition and dancing on the opposing team’s dugout. Raymond was the first to bring the furry green, flightless bird with an extendable tongue to life.

His experience convinced him that a mascot was essential to a team’s ultimate success on the field, in the stands and at the box office.

Now, 40 years later, Raymond will open the first Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting, Ind. Much is still in the planning stages, but a soft open is scheduled for Dec. 8 (mascots love anything soft). The museum’s mission is to teach the importance of mascotry (that’s a word I just made up), like how to be a mascot — or how to make one.

Guests can attend the museum’s Mascot University to obtain a Mascot Diploma by completing courses all about mascoting (I made up another one). By trying on the various garb, visitors feel the weight and even

experience the smell inside the suit. They will learn the essential moves that bring a character to life, including physical schtick.

The person inside the costume must know how to interact with the players and umpires to create a narrative fans can follow. It’s pure theater and all part of the fun.

The museum will display photos of mascots posing with celebrities like George W. Bush, Muhammad Ali and J-Lo. In one hall, the giant heads of mascots are suspended from the ceiling, spinning about to celebrate their induction into the Hall. The voting is done by a panel of fans and sports professionals who look at design, technique and fan support.

When I ended my interview with David Raymond, I asked him what his final assessment was of the museum.

“It’s going to be the Disney of mascots,” he boasted.

I agree that it’s going to be fantastic. I mean, phantastic.

Hendricks Regional Health will host a cookout in honor of Deputy Jacob Pickett, with proceeds benefiting his family. The Deputy Jacob (Jake) PickFUNDRAISER ett Benefit Cookout will be held, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 21 in the parking lot Hendricks Regional Health Brownsburg Hospital.

Pickett, a Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was killed in the line of duty in March. Pickett was a Zionsville resident, husband and father of two, and a Brownsburg native who graduPickett ated from Brownsburg High School in 2002. He was the first BCSO deputy to fall in the line of duty since 1935.

Cost is $5 per meal, which includes your choice of hamburger, brat or hot dog with toppings, a bag of chips, choice of fruit, a gourmet cookie and bottled water.

Sean Sullivan has been in Zionsville only two years but is firmly entrenched in the community.

Center for the Performing Arts’ 2018-19 season features variety of good vibrations

“We receive a lot of CONCERTS feedback from our patron surveys and simply from talking to people who come to the performances, so we have a pretty good idea of what they want to see,” said Doug Tatum, vice president of programming, the Center for the Performing Arts. “The challenge and the fun for us is to cater to all those different tastes as much as possible with the resources we have, yet also to present artists who may be less familiar but can provide a compelling experience for our audiences that really expands their appreciation of the arts.”

The 2018-19 season, sponsored by Allied Solutions, with most of the shows at The Palladium, includes three rock ’n’ roll stars: Brian Wilson (Nov. 17), of Beach Boys fame; Graham Nash (March 22, 2019), from the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and John Hiatt (Nov. 9). All will be making their first appearance at The Palladium.

Others included in the Katz, Sapper & Miller Series are a wide variety of crowdpleasing rock, pop and folk acts, including

blues legend Buddy Guy (Sept. 22), twotime Grammy winner Melissa Etheridge (Sept. 25), Indigo Girls (Sept. 28); plus Queen (Sept. 20) and ABBA tribute shows (May 2, 2019) and Dennis DeYoung (Nov. 30), playing hits from his Styx days.

The Country Series includes Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (Sept. 21), Kellie Pickler (Nov. 3) and Sara Evans (Nov. 29).

The Holiday series includes “Glee” star Jane Lynch (Dec. 1) and David Koz & Friends Christmas (Dec. 9).

The Printing Partners Classical Series includes violinist Joshua Bell (Oct. 12), Drew Petersen (Jan. 13, 2019) and the Russian National Orchestra (Feb. 22, 2019). “(Bell) has appeared here previously with a chamber orchestra, but this is his first recital at the Center with only piano accompaniment, so his skills will be on full display for the entire evening,” Tatum said.

“We also have a recital by Drew Petersen, a brilliant young pianist who was the American Pianists Association’s 2017 Gold Medal Winner. The Russian National Orchestra, which truly is one of the world’s greatest, will perform an all-Rachmaninoff program, so that’s quite a combination.”

The Drewry Simmons Vornehm Jazz Series showcases Pat Metheny (Oct. 11), a 20-time Grammy-winning guitarist and composer who has a new band featuring

acclaimed British pianist Gwilym Simcock, and David Sanborn’s Jazz Quartet (Feb. 8, 2019).

“There is a real buzz in the jazz world about Metheny’s new quartet, so this is on my list as a ‘don’t-miss’ event,” Tatum said. “David Sanborn’s Jazz Quintet also is a new group that represents a return to his more acoustic jazz roots.”

Tatum said Veronica Swift, 23, is one of the hottest jazz vocalists in New York and has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald.

“She’s one of several emerging artists that we’re introducing to our audiences this season,” Tatum said of Swift, who will visit March 8, 2019.

The Songbook Series includes Engelbert Humperdinck (Oct. 26), Megan Hilty (Feb. 15, 2019) and Jack Jones (March 23, 2019) and Michael Feinstein (May 23, 2019). The Songbook Celebration Gala, featuring actor/ crooner Chris Isaak, is set for Sept. 15.

“Megan Hilty has a lot of fans as a TV actress as well as a Broadway star, so we think a lot of people will enjoy seeing her,’ Tatum said. “Jack Jones is a real singer’s singer, and people say his voice is just as rich as ever.”

Three Carmel High School students, Sophia Miller, Tara Lacy and Griffin Scott, are among five Hamilton County student vocalists selected for the Great American Songbook Foundation’s annual Songbook Academy in Carmel, it was announced June 6. The other Hamilton County students are Peter Fulton, of Fishers who attends Colonial Christian School in Indianapolis, and Marissa Tappy, Noblesville High School.

Zionsville Community High School’s Oliva Broadwater also was picked.

The Songbook Academy was founded by five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein and is in its ninth year. The 2018 academy, sponsored nationally by the Central Indiana Community Foundation’s Efroymson Family Fund, is scheduled July 21-28 at the Songbook Foundation’s headquarters, the Center for the Performing Arts.

The week culminates in the July 28 Songbook Academy Finals, a performance and competition, July 28 at the 1,600-seat Palladium concert hall. Tickets go on sale June 15, at 317-843-3800 or TheCenterPresents. org.

Zionsville — Monika Herzig, a jazz pianist, will play at 7 p.m. June 13 in the Lincoln Park Concert series.

Mr. Daniel, who performs children’s music, will play at 6:30 p.m.

Carmel — The Jazz on Monon free concert series continues 6 to 9 p.m. June 16 with Main Street Jazz Band. It has moved to just south of Union Brewing Company at Monon Square, the northeast corner of the Monon Greenway and City Center Drive.

Westfield — Urban Vines Winery and Brewery is holding Thursday night concerts throughout the summer. Holly Stults Hass has a number of reasons for wanting kids to see Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s musical THEATER production of “James and the Giant Peach.”

Absorbing a positive message is one reason. Inspiration to work in theater is another.

“The fact that the kids in the audience will be seeing kids like themselves performing on stage is so important,” said Stults Hass, executive programs director for Civic Theatre. “It may inspire a child in the audience to take a class or audition for a play or musical, or merely help them relate more to the story because kids are up there.”

Jr. Civic’s production of “James and the Giant Peach” has no shortage of kids in the cast: 33, to be exact, including more than a dozen from Hamilton County. The young performers range in age from 7 to 15 and share the stage with two adults, including Stults Hass, who plays Aunt Sponge — one of two villianous aunts who torment the protagonist, James Henry Trotter, an 8-year-old orphan who, after discovering a magic potion,

is whisked away on harrowing adventures inside a giant peach.

Based on the 1961 novel by Ronald Dahl, Jr. Civic’s production runs June 15 through June 20 in The Tarkington, 3 Center Green, Carmel.

“There are so many life lessons hidden in this peach of a story,” Stults Hass said. “(There is) hope, finding the magic and wonder in what seems to be grim circumstances (and) tolerance, realizing that it is OK to be different and embracing that in everyone.”

Attending the Indiana Wind Symphony Side-by-Side Concert last year was instrumental for CONCERT Ella Haisley, who will be a Fishers High School sophomore in the fall.

Haisley met principal horn player Larry Purdue at a side-by-side concert Haisley and began taking lessons from him.

It earned Haisley a chance to play with the IWS at its May concert.

“It was one of the best experiences I’ve had,” Haisley said. “Playing with the Doughty IWS has allowed me to gain the experience of what it is like to play with a professional group and be exposed to that environment. It has helped me improve my confidence greatly. I went to watch the Side-By-Side concert last year, and it’s cool to see that just a year later I’m now playing at it.”

“The Side-by-Side ConPerfetti cert provides me a great opportunity to gain advice from professional musicians and interact with fellow students who share a love of music,” said Perfetti, a percussionist.

Doughty, who plays clarEllsworth inet, said she is eager to learn from professionals as she challenges herself to play more difficult music.

“I’m looking forward to this opportunity to play alongside other very talented musicians, and I think I’m going to learn a lot from playing with them,” said Ellsworth, a trumpet player.

Solutioneering: What does that mean?

Engineering creative solutions for outdoor living spaces is our provocative definition of solutioneerOUTDOOR LIVING ing. Certainly, it carries forward to bathroom and kitchen remodels. But the dramatic results are predominantly patio/ deck-driven.

EXAMPLES 1. A few weeks ago, a lovely Carmel couple wondered how they could make their dull screen porch not so dull.

Their presumption was that the walls needed removed, windows added or the entire structure imploded to begin again. Nope. A few gentle nudges got the benign concrete floor, coated with a glossy cocoa stain topped with a brilliantly colored oversized rug and coordinating bright pillows on the patio chairs, added a sparkling touch.

2. The featured project photo moved the fire feature to the edge of the patio instead of the center and saved 120 square feet of patio and a few thousand dollars. That freed up dollars to build a grill counter.

What’s the difference?

Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt When it comes to the finer things in life, some people have distinctly refined tastes. They can tell GRAMMAR GUY the difference between a St. Francis and a Sterling Cabernet Sauvignon. And, yes, I did just ask Google about fancy, expensive red wines in order to make that comparison. Others couldn’t tell one of Napa Valley’s best bottles of wine from a box of Franzia. In their opinion, both wines “get the job done,” so to speak.

Today, we’re looking at one of grammar’s narrow distinctions: When to use “different than” and when to use “different from.” If you think there’s not much difference, just consult with my reader inbox — I often get electronically scolded for using the wrong one by Grammar Guy’s most refined readers.

In general, “different from” is the preferred phrase among grammar aficionados. It’s an adjective phrase that is used to compare two things. Here are a few examples: Marty set himself apart from the rest of the field with his stunning flute solo. Although the new “Space Wars”

movies had special effects different from the originals, I think they’re all pretty much the same movie.

Although “different than” shouldn’t be employed as often, it does have its merits.

Like “different from,” “different than” is an adjective phrase used to compare two things. What makes it unique is that the phrase often gets divided. For example: Brian picked a different balloon animal than the one Noah picked. I understood Barry’s new neck tattoo to represent something much different than your interpretation. Mike took a different route than I did to get to the monster truck rally.

“Different from” is seen as the gold standard among editors, linguists and grammarians, although some people can’t really notice a difference. In general, use “different from.” An easy way to remember this is that “from” starts with “f,” just like “formal” does. So, in any formal writing, make sure you use “different from.”

Kom Ombo’s unique dual temple Commentary by Don Knebel A temple 31 miles north of Aswan, Egypt, has a unique configuration and provides unusual images of ancient surTRAVEL gical instruments.

In about 1400 B.C., Pharaoh Thutmose III erected a temple overlooking the Nile River for worshipping the god Sobek, usually shown with a crocodile head.

Thutmose hoped that honoring Sobek would placate the area’s vicious crocodiles. By the second century B.C., the temple, near Kom Ombo, had fallen into ruins. Pharaoh Ptolemy VI Philometor, whose reign began in 180 B.C., believed Sobek deserved a new temple.

Not wanting to offend Sobek’s rival, the falcon-headed Horus, Ptolemy built a limestone temple featuring two identical, sideby-side sections, one devoted to Sobek and the other to Horus. Succeeding pharaohs expanded the dual temple, adding a secret chamber between the sanctuaries where a priest, pretending to be an oracle, could answer questions about the gods’ desires.

A circular well with steps to the bottom functioned as a nilometer, allowing priests to determine the level of the Nile during its

annual flooding.

Rome annexed Egypt as a province in 30 B.C., and Caesar Augustus added a forecourt and reliefs to the Kom Ombo temple. After Christianity became legal in the Roman Empire in the fourth century A.D., Christians used the temple as a church. As worshippers did in other temple/churches, they defaced images they considered pagan.

Flooding, earthquakes and scavengers eventually destroyed much of the Kom Ombo temple. In the 19th century, during restoration of the remainder, workers found 300 crocodile mummies, a few of them now displayed in a room in the temple. Workers also found reliefs along the temple’s rear wall depicting about 40 Roman-era medical instruments. Carved representations of scalpels, forceps, scissors, catheters, bone saws, medicine bottles, specula, suction cups and dental tools are assembled between a basin and goddesses on birthing stools.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Insurance / Financial Advisory Firm in Carmel is seeking an Office Administrator to work Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 – 5:00, with occasional flexibility to trade days for family and vacation situations.

Primary responsibilities are providing administrative support to 7 reps.

This includes submitting paperwork for processing and follow-up as needed. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office, have strong organization skills, attention to detail, and be able to multitask. The office administrator is expected to be personable, resourceful, exercise good judgment and be able to work independently. Experience in insurance or investments is not required for the right candidate but would be helpful.
