Porsche cars to line Main Street for CruZionsville

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com For the fifth straight year, Porsche owners will cruise into Zionsville on June 13 to display their vehicles and simultaneously fundraiser raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease during CruZionsville.

“I wanted to do something to bring people to our community,” Steve Tarr, event organizer, said.

“We wanted to create something that was more than just a car show.”

Tarr emphasized the community involvement and the opportunity for families to enjoy the event together. The day will include vehicle-related booths – such as auto detailing and windshield protection – a fashion show and a food-eating contest. Local cub scouts will serve as color guard and Miss Fall Festival will sing the national anthem. Roughly 125 Porsche cars are expected to be on display along with Ducati motorcycles.

Many Main Street businesses are offering special items to their customers, with Hopwood Cellars selling specially numbered CruZionsville bottles of wine and Inga’s packaging its Sweet ’N Cheesy mix in a special Porsche mug.

“We want people to see our beautiful community and meet our merchants,” Tarr said. “It’s all about promoting our community.”

After the vehicle parade, the cars will be on display on Main Street and will be judged in a variety of categories based on class, model and year plus two special awards from celebrity and youth judges. Celebrity judges are expected to include Miss Indiana, WISH-TV anchor Lauren Lowrey and ZPD Chief of Police Robert Knox. The youth trophy will be presented by children who first interview selected car owners and then decide to whom the trophy should go.

Tarr hopes that children will appreciate the beauty of these cars as more than just utilitarian.

“We want to help kids understand that art is in different kinds of things,” he said. “It’s not only a painting. Lots of things can make up what art is.”

The food competition will pit four teams of three people against each other. A different member from each team will have two minutes to consume as many food items as possible: Bub’s burgers, Greek’s pizza or hot wings from The Friendly. The food contest is scheduled twice during the day, with both winning teams receiving $450 to donate in their name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“We feel strongly about supporting our local organizations, especially those targeted at educating our community’s youth,” said Steve Schwartz, owner of Ballerinas and Bruisers.

While the event is free to the public, money is raised through sponsorships, car restorations and other activities. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Almost every family in some way or another has a connection to Alzheimer’s or dementia,” Tarr said. “This money goes to help fund research to help solve this.”

Every 67 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s, and it’s the sixth leading cause of deaths according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Tarr estimates that by the end of this year CruZionsville will have donated $50,000 in total over the past five years.

Council delays PNC site charrettes – The Zionsville Town Council decided to delay several planned charrettes on development of the former PNC Bank site until councilors can come to a consensus on the scope of the project. In April the council approved plans to contract engineering firm HWC to develop guidelines for the site, but some councilors expressed concerns that HWC’s role would limit options and stifle creative solutions. The town bought the land two year ago to have control over a crucial area near an intersection set to be improved.

Council paves way for new Town Hall building

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council effectively – though not officially – ruled out the possibility of renovating its redevelopment current Town Hall building by passing two ordinances June 1 and approving funds that lay the groundwork for the construction of a new town hall.

The first ordinance approved by the council outlines the plan to finance the project, which is expected to be funded primarily through tax increment financing, food and beverage taxes and cumulative cap development funds. In order to get a lower interest rate, it also allows the council to levy a special benefits tax as a backup funding method, although that tax is never expected to go into effect.

Bruce Donaldson, the town’s bond counsel, said he sees the backup tax Donaldson levied “quite frequently” in other communities, but he does not expect Zionsville to go that route.

“The town council has a reasonable expec-

tation to use funds other than the property tax backup to make the debt service payments,” Donaldson said in an email.

The second ordinance allows Zionsville to switch out its current lease bond with a general obligation bond with identical terms once the town has officially moved out of its current building. This will allow the building to be released from its lease so it can be sold and commercially developed.

Councilor Steve Mundy said after the meeting that a key next step in moving the project forward is finding a buyer interested in developing the site of the current Town Hall to create tax revenue that can be used toward the new facility.

Mundy “Right now we are marketing the property and making developers aware of it,” he said. “We know there are some who have some interest, but we have no firm offers on anything yet.”

The council also approved $250,000 from the general fund to pay for CSO Architects to continue designing the new town hall. The funding should cover the project through the rest of the design phase and result in a proj-

ect ready to go out for bid.

“This does certainly take a big step toward saying we are intending to build a new town hall after we sell off part of this property and put it on commercial tax rolls,” Mundy said at the meeting. “It does take out of the question the likely refurbishing of the building we’re sitting in right now.”

Parts of the current Town Hall building are more than 50 years old, and the facility would require major repairs to heating, cooling, plumbing and other systems, Mundy said.

He also said that the new town hall will likely cost between $6 and $6.5 million but that the new bond will likely be closer to $8 million to help pay off debt associated with the current Town Hall building.

The Suburban Lines commuter bus was nearly underwater on S.R. 334 east of Elm Street during one of the worst floods in Zionsville history in early July 1957. Several men tried to rescue the bus with no luck. Starting on June 28, 1957, storms dropped record amounts of rainfall. Topping the recorded list was 7.35 inches at Whitestown – all falling into the Eagle Creek basin and heading south for Zionsville. By Friday morning, the waters spread across the banks and into town. Water had backed up and cut through the earthen levee, allowing a cascading wave to cover a large area of the town.

Items left in cars tell a story Commentary by Ward Degler Three days a week I drive cars for a local car auction. It’s a part-time gig that helps fill in the gap Social Security Plain talk leaves behind.

It’s decent work, interesting and sometimes even fun. We pick up cars at local dealerships and drive them to the auction.

They are trade-ins mostly, sometimes repossessions. Some good. Some, not so much.

Some even require a couple Hail Mary’s to ensure we get where we are going.

One interesting thing is the stuff the owners leave behind. You can tell a lot about people by what you find in their cars.

In one aging pickup I found a new radiator cap, an oil filter and a new serpentine belt.

The receipt for them was six months old. The owner probably meant to make repairs but couldn’t find the time. A lot of people are super busy these days.

A small can of automotive touch-up paint was on the floor of another car. I noticed a couple chips in the paint on this one. There was a box of fuses in another. Some of the electronics on the dash were out. The owner was probably too busy to get it fixed, I guess,

and just replaced fuses from time to time.

Some cars have gaping holes in the dash where the radio used to be. A lot of young people install super-gee-whiz, hot-damn stereos in their cars, and then remove them when they trade. I don’t know why they don’t put the old equipment back in. Maybe they’re just too busy.

A lot of people leave pennies behind. Sometimes they are at the bottom of the cup holder, fused into a solid lump. No one respects pennies anymore.

The saddest car I’ve driven was an older pickup truck. It was in pretty good shape, but in the back seat I found several pairs of blue jeans, a couple of clean shirts, some socks and a pair of sneakers. There was also a loaf of bread and a package of spoiled lunchmeat.

Some people are forced to live in their cars.

They are busy, but struggling. It’s usually temporary.

Still, it’s sad when the finance guys show up.

It is crucial that you know where registered sex offenders reside and talk with your children about how to stay safe.

Once you have registered an address, the system will automatically alert you via e-mail when an offender moves within a two-mile radius of the registered address.

If you plan on spending time with family or friends, register their address beforehand so you know where the registered sex offenders live. Register any and all addresses where your children spend a lot of time, for example at friends, grandparents or babysitter’s ad-

dresses. This keeps you up to date on newly registered sex offenders in your area without you having to do anything other than read your email alerts.

Navigating adolescence

Adolescence. If you have ever been an adolescent or perhaps have one living under your roof, that word conjures up family many different emotions. Some may be good, some less than ideal to say the least.

Adolescence is a difficult developmental phase for those going through it, as well as those of us that are living with someone that is. It’s a time to figure out who we are, differentiate ourselves from our parents in order to figure out where they stop and we begin. This whole process can be downright exhausting.

Although it may not be apparent, adolescents need parents and mentors more now than ever as they navigate uncharted territories of who they are and what they are going to become. I like to describe adolescence as a time to try on many different coats. I know I personally tried on the ‘skater’ coat (all you ’80s kids know what I’m talking about), a horse girl, a jock, a nerd, a boy crazy girl, an anti-boy crazy girl. It was all part of the process and I’m sure as maddening to watch as it was to live.

We need to remember a few things as we seek to support the adolescents in our lives:

They need us even if they aren’t asking. Be available to them, ask questions and patiently listen for answers.

Share our own struggles and try to help them normalize the stress and strains of what they are going through.

Remember that if the coat your beloved adolescent is wearing today drives you crazy, hold on! They may change to another one soon. Openly resisting coats tends to lead to more pushback rather than connection.

Don’t be afraid to have boundaries with adolescents. They need boundaries and relax when they know what they are.

Make sure to find support in taking care of yourself as you help the adolescents in your life. In essence, put your own oxygen mask on before that of your neighbor.

Remember that adolescents are going about the very important business of growing up. They need our support, encouragement, honesty and sometimes discipline in order to end up the mature adult they can become.

Court ruling allows Jeff Papa to become Zionsville’s first mayor

By Ann Marie Shambaugh • annmarie@youarecurrent.com When Jeff Papa woke up the morning of June 2, he had no idea that he was about to make history.

But with the Indiana Court of Appeals cover story reversing that morning a Boone County ruling that invalidated Zionsville’s reorganization with Perry Township, Zionsville officials quickly threw together a swearing-in ceremony to make Papa the first mayor of the newly-expanded town.

“I’m happy that the questions about the reorganization were answered and now we can get to work with our new partners in Perry Township and repair our friendship with Whitestown and move forward,” Papa said a few hours after assuming his new role.

In November 2014, voters in Zionsville and Perry Township approved a reorganization plan, which expanded Zionsville’s area by about 40 percent and created the position of mayor.

The Town of Whitestown responded by filing a lawsuit seeking to block the reorganization, but the appeals court found their arguments lacking.

“The trial court erred when it entered summary judgment for Whitestown and against Zionsville on the question of whether Zionsville was denied authority under the Act to reorganize with Perry Township,” the appeals court ruling stated.

The Whitestown Town Council scheduled a meeting in executive session for June 9 to discuss sending the issue to the Indiana Supreme Court. Whitestown Town Council President Eric Miller expressed disappointment that Zionsville proceeded as if the matter were decided when a higher court could issue a different ruling.

“Whitestown was prudent in awaiting review by the Court of Appeals and similarly believes the parties should see the case through to its conclusion before taking any further action on the reorganization,” Miller said in a statement. “We believe it is in the best interest of residents in the area to not move forward with Zionsville’s reorganization plan to incorporate and develop the bordering community of Perry Township without providing municipal services.”

Quick change The original plan approved by voters was scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2015, and provided a year for the reorganization to take place. Now Zionsville has half that amount of time to

Uncertainties remain Although Zionsville is quickly moving ahead to complete the reorganization, some details are still up in the air. The approved plan calls for Papa to serve as mayor only until the end of the year, and he is not allowed to run for mayor in the November election.

Zionsville Town Council member Tim Haak filed to run for mayor in the May primary but was not on the ballot because the court did not make its ruling before the election.

Papa – who works as chief of staff and chief legal counsel for the Indiana State Senate by day – believes it would be fair to list Haak as the Republican mayoral candidate in the November election, and he expects that candidates from other parties should still have time to file for the position. It remains to be seen, however, exactly how the final November ballot will come together.

It’s high time to shutter IRS We’re sure you’ve heard about the latest fail at the IRS. It was recently reported tax return information for “about 104,000” taxpayers was illegally accessed by computer hackers overseas. The stolen information was used to submit fraudulent returns and, as a result, “about $50 million” in refunds were issued. This, of course, is on top of the recent scandal wherein the IRS was caught targeting conservative organizations. We taxpayers finally need to say, “Enough, already. Time to shut it down!” Wherever you find our government, corruption and incompetence are sure to follow. Since we know the Republicans will never have the collective spine to overhaul our tax system, it’s time to look at thirdparty candidates.

An idea, well-conceived

Our eldest son capped a successful first year of college with a class trip to the seeming birthplace of democracy, Athens, Greece. As a student in Indiana University’s Civic Leaders program, it related sufficiently enough to “actual” study to make the expenditure worthwhile.

In spite of a lurking suspicion that he’d found a loophole that provided an oh-so-perfect excuse for an island junket, his mother and I were impressed by the reading list and occasional photo from important historical sites. Certainly, there are other pictures of young adults being young adults – let’s call those historic sights – but, we are content that the time and money was well spent.

As luck and an understanding spouse would have it, I found myself enticed to participate in a program at a nearby Aegean pied-a-terre a few days antecedent to our son’s scheduled return to the U.S. The gap after the Memorial Day conference and my retrieving our progeny allowed for a

short tour of the Peloponnesian isthmus.

Populated since pre-history, our present understanding comes from Paul’s letters in the New Testament to the locals of Corinth, or perhaps to the Olympics foundations in Olympia, or maybe to the Hollywood film “300” and its spawn which follows the legendary tale of the Spartans.

With each vista more impressive than the last and with each ruin more awe-inspiring than another, one wonders what will remain of us in more than 3,000 years. Would city leaders be pleased in how they are memorialized? Are we destined to be remembered by empty tombs, ancient vandals and fragments of broken marble? If not a statue of stone, then can an idea, well-conceived, hope for immortality?

I’ve just left my youngest child’s recognition ceremony, though as my husband Doo likes to point out in his Mr. Incredible voice, “It’s not a graduation. She’s humor moving from fifth to sixth grade!” Regardless, the Wilson family is now officially done with elementary school and I couldn’t be happier.

Of course tears threatened a few times.

When you see your baby at the podium recalling her fondest memories of kindergarten in front of a few hundred people, and she speaks with poise and confidence and just the right amount of humor, you can’t help but feel proud and slightly sentimental. I sat amidst parents and teachers whom I’ve gotten to know over the last eleven years, and I realized this might be the last time I see them. And if I’m perfectly honest, I’m not quite ready to replace field days, science fairs, and movie nights with field trips to D.C. and scientific dissections of pigs and, gulp, date nights.

Graduation ceremonies inherently emphasize your child’s growth, and force you to take stock of how far she’s come. I can easily remember Maddie’s first day of school and how my neighbors and I congratulated ourselves with a mimosa cocktail that morning.

Today, after I put my dancin’ queen on the bus for her last day, I had a single moment of melancholy and then jumped into the air for an Irish feet clapping. “Job well done!” I thought. So though part of me will miss the innocence of elementary school, I mostly feel relieved that we can finally close this chapter of our lives.

Not that I’m particularly anxious for another teenage girl in the house; her older sister is providing enough hormones, sass and eye rolls for the both of them and I haven’t yet developed a strategy for hiding all of my clothes, shoes, make-up and accessories.

And Lord help us when we have four drivers; one has aged me easily 10 years. [Yes, I now look forty!]

But despite what Doo thinks, graduating from elementary school is a big deal, and I for one am celebrating. Peace out.

Get wild at Indy’s Zoobilation

June 13 will be a wild night for the Indianapolis Zoo – well, even more wild than the usual wild animals make it.

That’s the Friday of the Indianapolis diversion Zoo Zoobilation, an annual event bringing together humans, animals and central Indiana businesses for one night of food and fanfare from 5:30 p.m. to midnight.

“It’s grown into a party,” said Zoobilation co-chair Ellen Coen.

According to Ellen, Zoobilation began at the house of Indianapolis real estate magnate Herb Simon in the 1980’s. It has since become a sizable fundraiser and event, with live music and more than 70 restaurants and vendors in attendance – all on the grounds of the Indianapolis Zoo. Each year, Zoobilation celebrates a different exhibit, whether new, returning or enhanced, according to Larry Coen, Zoobilation co-chair. This year, the zoo’s returning koalas are center-stage; the sold-out event even has an Australian theme.

“We’re expecting a big crowd, shoulder-to-shoulder attendance where 5,000 people are packed into relatively small areas, if you think about the pathways that we use at the zoo,” Larry said. “So it’s a really great party atmosphere.”

More than 70 restaurants and bars across central Indiana will join in the fun, donating their food and services to the night, including Matt the Miller’s and Langton’s Irish Pub in Carmel, and Stone Creek in Zionsville, according to Larry.

These businesses will offer their fare not only to guests, but also to a panel of judges, who will select winners in different categories.

Last year’s dessert winner, Stone Creek, will be bringing back an old favorite, according to marketing manager Mallory Doyel.

“It is our golden raisin and cranberry bread pudding,” Doyel said. “We’ve been serving it for years now, and it’s kind of a crowd favorite. So every year, people kind of come up to our booth, hoping we’ll have it, and they get excited when we do.”

According to general manager Chris Parker, Matt the Miller’s will be serving shrimp and grits, while Langton’s will be serving cottage pie and seafood chowder.

Parker said the event is great both for the zoo and participating businesses.

“We’re located in Carmel, and doing events outside Carmel and Hamilton County are beneficial just to reach people that might not know we exist, or where we’re located, or have ever heard of us before,” Parker said. “It’s probably the biggest fundraising event in the city every year, from what I gather.”

By now, even at 9-years old, he should have plenty of them.

The family musical at Beef & Boards brings the total of productions listed on his resume to 10. Performing since he was a 4-year-old, he’s been seen in shows at The Artist Studio, Civic Theatre and Theatre on the Square, to name a few. Of course, each has its challenge.

“The hardest part is remembering all the lines,” McCabe said.

Still, it’s all about the friendships he’ll take with him long after the curtain goes down.

“My favorite thing about ‘Peter Pan’ are my friends,” he said. “I get to hang out with them on breaks.”

While he’s been developing his acting chops most of his life, he also has another potential career in mind.

“I have wanted to be a scientist since I got my first science kit in preschool,” McCabe said. “But I love to act, too. So I don’t know yet!”

“Peter Pan,” the high-flying Tony Award-winning musical featuring the iconic songs “I’m Flying, “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “Never Never Land” and “I Won’t Grow Up,” is on stage through July 3 in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

Behind Bars: Wild Indie Mule Grilled Ham and Pineapple Kabobs Cook: 8 mins Original recipe makes 4 servings Ingredients: 3 tablespoons brown sugar, 2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 1 teaspoon prepared mustard, 3/4 pound cooked ham, cut into 1 inch cubes, 1 (15 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained Directions: Preheat grill for high heat. In a medium bowl, mix together brown sugar, vinegar, vegetable oil and mustard. Thread ham and pineapple chunks alternately onto skewers. Lightly oil grill grate. Place skewers on the prepared grill, and brush liberally with the brown sugar mixture. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes, turning frequently and basting often. Serve when heated through and richly glazed.

Ingredients: 2 oz Citrus Vodka, 1/2 oz HUM Liqueur, 1 oz Ginger Syrup (or Ginger Beer can be substituted), 1 oz Lemon Juice, Fresh Mint, Fresh Cilantro, Lemon (for garnish) Directions: In a shaker, muddle mint, cilantro and lemon juice. Add ice, vodka, HUM and ginger syrup to shaker, then shake for about 15 seconds. Fill cocktail glass with ice and strain shaker contents into each glass. Garnish with lemon.

PORK CHOPS Serves: 4 / Cook: 20 minutes Ingredients: 4 bone-in pork chops (about 2 1/2 pounds) at room temperature, 3 tablespoons olive oil, Salt and ground black pepper Directions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Season pork chops with salt and pepper, cook in batches for about 7 to 9 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Using the same hot skillet add wine or balsamic vinegar to the drippings and add a dollop of mustard. Scrape over heat until you have a sauce.

Tune up to avoid health crashes Commentary by Stephanie Cohen Men, do you ever check under the hood of your car? It’s how you protect your investment, extend your men’s health vehicle’s life and performance and avoid crashes. But when it comes to checking under your own hood, your health, that is where many come up short.

Beyond the usual risk factors of obesity, smoking, high cholesterol and diabetes – there’s the dreaded hazard no one likes to talk about and happens to be my specialty: cancer.

The top three cancers in men are lung, prostate and colon cancers. Lung cancer has a strong environmental component: smoking.

The other two often hinge on genetics. Having multiple relatives with cancer or one relative with multiple cancers are red flags.

Fear often keeps men from uncovering their risks. Many think that if they feel fine, it’s best to not look for trouble. What they may not realize is that finding something early may make a big difference in the stage when cancer is identified, and, ultimately, survival. With colon cancer, for instance, you can remove a growth and stop cancer from happening.

Others are concerned about the cost of

health screenings, both money and time, which is why St.Vincent Fishers is hosting the Men’s Health Tune-Up from 7 to 11 a.m. on June 17. There will also be the chance to test drive a Tesla Model S and meet an Indiana Pacers player.

For risks with a strong genetic influence (like cancer), my advice is simple: Have regular health screenings, learn your family history and share it with your physician.

Frog pose focuses energy Commentary by Anne Johnson Namaste! My name is Anne, and I teach kids yoga at Simply Yoga in Zionsville. Yoga helps us connect our breath with our yoga movements to steady our minds.

There is no perfect in yoga. It’s okay to look silly, wobble a bit and laugh. Now let me hopp-ily introduce Frog Pose.

When they are still, frogs occupy a tiny space. But when they spring forward and leap, they are surprisingly long. While they are small, frogs are strong. They must balance their power and control as they hop and land on floating lily pads.

Try to transform yourself into a frog. Stand with your feet wider than your hips. Bend your knees and squat low, dropping your bottom toward the ground. Bring your elbows to the inside of your knees with your hands at your heart.

Stay in your tiny frog squat and place your hands on the ground. Press down into your feet and hands to spring up with energy like a frog, lengthening your body out. Return to your squat. Hop as many times as you like, squatting low, then stretching long. Use your strong core to help you land without a sound.

‘Lead’ and ‘led’ Commentary by Jordan Fischer Question: “Dear Jordan, I look forward to your column in The Southside Times every week. I especially enjoy grammar guy your sense of humor and the fact that you don’t take grammar too seriously. Please do address the difference between the homonyms ‘lead’ and ‘led.’ They are used incorrectly more and more often, as you did in your May 7 - 13 column. You are so rarely, if ever, inaccurate, I forgive you!” – (Petra Ritchie) Answer: You know, I put those mistakes in my columns just so clever readers like you will catch them and give me more fodder to write about.

(No, not really. Great catch, Petra!)

The mistake at hand here is mixing up the proper past tense of the verb “lead” – meaning to guide, especially by going in advance – with the element lead (which, incidentally, has the best Latin name: plumbum).

“Lead” is an irregular verb, so its past tense isn’t “leaded,” but “led.” The trick isn’t in remembering that it’s irregular, though, but how it’s irregular, because it conjugates differently than “read,” which is spelled the same in the past tense, but pronounced differently.

Unfortunately, Word’s little squiggly lines aren’t much help here, because “leaded” is a word in its own right meaning “covered, weighted with or containing lead.” Why they didn’t go with “plumbumed,” I’ll never know.

So there’s no trick on this one – you’ve just got to remember that “lead” becomes “led” in the past tense. Even your friendly neighborhood Grammar Guy needs a refresher on it from time to time, though, so you can rest easy knowing we’re all in this together.

Legendary Cape of Good Hope Commentary by Don Knebel Cape Point, a UNESCO World Heritage site situated 30 miles south of Cape Town, South Africa, offers an extraordinary travel view of the famous Cape of Good Hope, which is neither the southernmost point of Africa nor the point where oceans meet. It is, however, the home of a macabre legend.

In 1487, Portuguese explorer Bartholomew Diaz and his crew sailed south from Lisbon along the western coast of Africa, hoping to find a sea route to India. Diaz managed to sail east after reaching the southern coast of Africa, but his frightened sailors refused to continue. On the return trip, Diaz encountered a rocky headland jutting into the ocean that he named “The Cape of Storms” because of violent weather in the area. His patron, King John II, renamed the point the “Cape of Good Hope” because it proved sailing to India was feasible.

The king’s optimism was justified. In 1498, Vasco de Gama “rounded the Cape of Good Hope” and continued until he reached India.

The notion of “rounding the Cape” has long suggested that the Cape of Good Hope is at

the southern tip of Africa. It is not. To the east, little-known Cape Agulhas extends further south. Cape Agulhas is also where the warm currents of the Indian Ocean bump up against the cooler currents of the South Atlantic, creating turbulent weather. Cape Point tourists, having never heard of Cape Agulhas, buy T-shirts incorrectly saying they have seen “where two oceans meet.”

To reach the hilltop offering the best view of the Cape of Good Hope, visitors to Cape Point ride “The Flying Dutchman,” a funicular named for a legendary Dutch ship reportedly lost off the Cape of Good Hope during a storm. According to a 17th century tale, the ship and its ghostly crew are destined to sail the oceans forever, foretelling doom to anyone catching sight of the glowing ship. After seeing the Cape of Good Hope, the adventuresome can look for 250 species of birds and several troops of baboons. They can also try to avoid spotting the Flying Dutchman.

Try a breezy screened-in porch addition this year Commentary by Larry Greene PROJECT OVERVIEW: This home, located in the Sandstone subdivision in Fishers, was built in 1997. “The deck on our house did not provide a true outblueprint for door living experience.

We wanted to add a improvement screened porch that gave the feeling of being outside without the nuisance of intense sun and pesky bugs.”

DESIGN CHALLENGES: “We started with the intent of placing the new porch off the back of the house and we wanted it big enough to fit all six grandchildren.” Due to building setback regulations and roofline complications, the new porch would not fit off the back of the house. The south side of the house was found to be the best option.

INTERIOR FINISH: Once the foundation and structural framing was complete, pressure treated deck boards were installed. To create improved access in-and-out of the house, the existing window left of the fireplace was converted to fit a new exterior glass door. EZE-Breeze windows were chosen due to their ability to open three of the four lightweight, vinyl-glazed panels to create an

outdoors feel. The bead board ceiling and cedar trim throughout the interior of the porch was painted to match the existing house trim color.

EXTERIOR FINISH: Skirting was added to conceal the exposed bottom portion of the deck. Hardie exterior panels and cedar trim was installed throughout the perimeter of the porch to tie in with the existing house.
