Work begins on I-65 interchange

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com A project to ease congestion along Whitestown Parkway at the I-65 interchange at Exit 130 is set to begin. The transportation $1.6 million project will add lanes for drivers entering or exiting I-65, which is expected to help rush-hour traffic flow through the area once complete.

“The ramps will be expanded, two-lane ramps going north and two going south,” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “When you get off the interstate, you are getting off on one lane, and (after construction), you will be able to get off on two lanes.”

Access to and from I-65 at Exit 130 is not expected to be closed at any point in the project, but some lanes will be restricted at certain times. Whitestown officials are urging motorists to expect delays. They plan to post specific closures on the town’s Facebook page. Construction is expected to wrap up in September.

Drivers are encouraged to become familiar with alternate routes to help ease congestion during construction. Possible routes include Exit 133 for drivers heading north and Indianapolis Road/Lafayette Road for drivers going south. Lafayette Road reconnects to I-65 at 71st Street. Local drivers in Zionsville are encouraged to use Ford Road or Zionsville Road to access 86th Street or I-465.

Plans to improve the interchange began in late 2014 when Norton reached out to state officials to see what could be done.

“Some residents in the town were a bit concerned about congestion on the interchange,” Norton said. “I went with a group of people to INDOT to inquire about reconstruction of the interchange.”

After learning that reconstruction was not on INDOT’s short-term list, Norton worked with town engineers to draw up a plan for the interchange.

“In 2015, we negotiated with INDOT, and they were great partners,” he said. “They approved us to work on their infrastructure and gave us a right to do so.”

Teacher retirements – Zionsville Community High School teachers and staff recently celebrated the retirement of two longtime teachers.

Family concerns delay development of The Farm

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Last April, Kroger announced plans to build a Fresh Fare grocery store to anchor a development known as The Farm, a update 62-acre mixed-use development on the southwest corner of Michigan Road and Sycamore Street, but a family disagreement has delayed the project – at least for now.

Steve Pittman, owner of Pittman Partners, had suggested that his company serve as the developer of the $90 million project. After some of his siblings, who own an equal share of the land, expressed concern about the arrangement, he decided not to involve Pittman Partners.

“My siblings decided that that was too messy and that it would be hard for me as a beneficiary, as an executor and as a developer to wear all of those different hats,” he said.

Instead, he believes that Pittman Investors, which is owned by all five siblings and owns the land, should serve as the developer.

“I am suggesting that our family entity called Pittman Investors be the developer and that we develop that property as a family entity the way that we have planned it from the beginning,” he said.

Not all of his siblings agree, however. Steve Pittman said two of them – Mark Pittman and Anne Kelton – have reached out to other developers to gauge interest in purchasing their 20 percent shares. Steve Pittman hasn’t ruled out

purchasing them himself, but whenever ownership is determined, he hopes that the project will go forward as planned.

“My brother Chad and I, who were responsible for rezoning the property, are committed to making sure this development occurs based upon all the commitments and promises we made,” Steve Pittman said. The Zionsville Town Council approved rezoning for the project in August 2013, and the Zionsville Plan Commission approved the development plan in September 2015.

John Elliott, a spokesman for Kroger, said that he did not believe the grocer’s plan to move to Zionsville had changed.

The land has been part of the Pittman family since the 1980s and once served as a working farm.

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Developers of the proposed 200 West mixed-use project met with members of the Village Residents’ Association on May 31 to answer questions and development present several changes proposed.

Modifications include reduced building heights, increased setbacks for top floors of the tallest buildings and decreasing the number of single family homes while increasing their lot size.

“When we went back and looked at changes what we really thought about was fit, how does this fit into the Village area of Zionsville?

That’s what we focused on. We didn’t necessarily look at abstract numbers,” said Tim Ochs, an attorney representing developer Fabrico. “It’s looking at how we do a design that makes this fit better, if you will, into the Village area.”

Developers are seeking a rezoning of the four acres at Sycamore and Second streets from Urban Outdoor Business Development District to a Planned Unit Development District. The most recent plans include eight single-family homes, no more than 62 multifamily dwellings and retail space.

Residents in the Village have been expressing several concerns about the project for months. They are worried about increased traffic, drainage on the property and how the project would fit into the look and feel of the area.

Ochs said that a traffic impact analysis is being done by A&F Engineering and that the results will be made available to the public before the next Zionsville Plan Commission meeting. No matter what it shows, however, he acknowledged that the Village has “traffic issues” that are “not the fault of this proposed project.”

He also said that the $30 million project will generate “a substantial amount” of impact

fees that the town can use to improve transportation in the area, a goal that everyone involved shares.

“Why in the world would anybody spend $30 million if you couldn’t get to the thing?”

Ochs said. “In other words, our goals and objectives here are not as adverse to you all as you think. We want access to this project to be as good as possible, because that benefits the developer. That benefits the folks that are going to live there.”

Developer Randy Green said that it’s not known if the proposed multi-family housing units will be apartments or townhomes, but he expects they will be high-end. He agreed that future residents will only be interested if the area is accessible.

“We’re going to make a very strong commitment to do our best with the traffic,” he said.

“No one is even going to rent an apartment for that kind of money if they can’t get to it.”

After the presentation, many residents continued to express concerns about the project scope and its potential impact on the area.

“This loathsome PUD is changing the Village into what looks like Carmel,” said resident Sue Rizzo. “So you can take that street out here and make it a roundabout, because that’s what this stuff looks like.”

The Zionsville Plan Commission is expected to discuss the PUD at its meeting at 7 p.m.

Program celebrates Hoosier history

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Cramming two centuries of Indiana history into roughly an hour is a pretty big task, according to James H. Madison, but he intends to do his best when he presents event “200 Years of Indiana History.”

The free program, sponsored by the Zionsville Historical Society, celebrates the state’s bicentennial. It will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. June 12 at the Zionsville Lion’s Clubhouse, 115 S. Elm St. Madison moved to Indiana from Pennsylvania when he was 21 years old and began teaching a class about Indiana history in the 1970s at Indiana University. He wrote his first book about Indiana Madison in the 1980s.

“I’ve got this strange fascination with Hoosiers,” he said.

“No other state has a name like Hoosier,” Madison said. “That is more than just a brand name, there’s substance to it. There’s a feeling of connection and sometimes of pride and sometimes of regret, but a feeling of connection to Indiana and to all these other people who think of themselves as Hoosiers.”

He will present highlights of Indiana history with connections between past and present to help Hoosiers think about their future.

“I’ll try to introduce some new questions that come from new understanding,” Madison said.

“We’ve really learned a lot more about many core aspects of Indiana history,” he said, citing women’s history and environmental issues among the kinds of subjects that have come to the forefront in the 21st century, versus those explored in the previous half century.

Madison, an emeritus professor of history at IU, has published half a dozen books about the state, most recently “Hoosiers: a History of Indiana.”

“I’m kind of an Indiana missionary,” he said, in particular during the state’s bicentennial.

“I’m trying to recruit people to Indiana history.”

Relay for Life returns June 10

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Relay for Life will return to Lions Park June 10. The eight-hour event celebrates survivors and remembers those who lost their battle with cancer. The festivifundraiser ties will kick off at 3 p.m. with an opening ceremony and will continue throughout the afternoon and evening.

“We’ll have activities that are family-friendly throughout the day,” said Jeff Johnson, a senior manager with Relay for Life with the American Cancer Society.

Participants form teams and fundraise throughout the year. On the day of the event, one person from each team must walk or relay around the track at all times.

“We have teams that have registered and taken part in fundraising over the course of the last year that are planning on coming out with their family and friends. They will be setting up campsites around our track to do a little on-site fundraising and to celebrate the work they’ve done throughout the year,” Johnson said.

The day will include activities for kids, a silent auction, a kickball tournament and a bake sale.

Poet honors stars and stripes

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Luca Ranalli’s first foray into poetry has made quite an impression.

“It was a class assignment to write any kind of poem,” said Luca, 8, flag day who just finished second grade at Boone Meadow Elementary. “I don’t know why I chose the American flag. It just came into my mind.”

His mother, Jennifer Ranalli, said that’s partly true.

“But this kid is an extremely patriotic kid,” she Ranalli said. “He’s a kid who will notice a veteran’s hat or a veteran in uniform and be the first kid to stick out his hand and say, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

His mother never saw the poem until after Luca turned it in. Luca said he wanted to keep it a surprise.

“He’s doesn’t like to draw a lot of attention to himself,” Jennifer said. “He’s very modest.”

His teacher, Jennifer Bender, said Luca worked on the poem by himself for most of the session.

“We talked about using strong words in poetry,” Bender said. “Our big theme was taking

something that seemed ordinary and using your words to make it extraordinary.”

Coaches launch cheer program

By Kelsey Ligon • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville area families have a new option when it comes to competitive cheerleading.

The Indy Stars Cheer program is minutes south of town and accepting athletics more athletes through July.

The Indy Stars Cheer program offers training in tumbling, stunting, dancing and jumping for girls and boys ages 3 to 18.

Coaches and Zionsville residents Stephanie Evrard and Jennifer Scagnoli have three teams in the program and are looking to add more athletes. Having coached together for three years, Evrard and Scagnoli take pride in turning beginners into winners.

“It’s a great process to watch the difference from the beginning to the end of the season,” Evrard said.

To prove it, Evrard and Scagnoli enjoy sharing success stories.

“We have had cheerleaders who did not make their school team and have joined our squad for a season, then made the varsity cheerleading team the following year,” Evrard said. “Our program is set apart by the bond our teams form.”

themselves the “cheer sisters” because they became so close, but Evrard and Scagnoli say they are excited to build the male demographic of the program as well.

With an emphasis on goal setting, positive attitude, work ethic and confidence building, the duo works to build well-rounded young adults in addition to a strong team.

To help their teams get the most out of the program, Evrard and Scagnoli are bringing in a gymnastics and tumbling instructor and are flying in a top level choreographer. Their facility at 8070 Georgetown Rd. in Indianapolis features two Tumble Traks, two floors, a rod floor and in-ground trampoline.

Habitat for Humanity of Boone County has organized the Faith Build, a home constructed and sponsored by Boone County churches. Despite the rainy spring weather, the Faith Build at 523 Franklin St. in Thorntown is making progress. The home is being built for Janet, a mother of five with two living at home with her full time. Janet came to Habitat in 2013 after her rental house burned to the ground. The only things the fire department was able to save were a few family pictures. Having to rebuild her life, she rents a mobile home in Thorntown. On May 11, members of a ladies study group from Zionsville Presbyterian Church served as the crew. Multiflora Rose: Good, bad, ugly Commentary by Ward Degler If you are old enough, you may remember Multiflora Rose. Right after World War II, in Missouri, where I grew up, plain talk the Conservation Commission heralded Multiflora Rose as botany’s latest and greatest gift to farmers.

The rose, which is a rambling, tangling bramble, grows into an almost impenetrable hedge six feet high. It was proclaimed a modern marvel because farmers could plant it instead spending money on fences.

Even better, the state offered the plants for free. All the farmers had to do was plant them.

And plant them they did. In the ensuing years, driving through the state was like visiting an oriental garden. Multiflora Rose bordered every field, highway and byway.

Then the unexpected happened. From every blossom there came a seed in the form of a bright red rose hip. Birds loved them. And wherever birds roosted, perched or stopped for a potty break, new Multiflora Rose plants sprouted.

The birds, it turned out, did a more thorough job of planting the shrub than the farmers did, and soon the entire state of Missouri

(and probably at least 40 others) had Multiflora Rose growing everywhere. Hedges grew up in the middle of pastures. City parks were overrun with the plant.

Hasty meetings and serious research ensued. Proclamations were made. Warning fliers were distributed. “Do Not (repeat) Do Not Plant Multiflora Rose!”

In China, Japan and Korea, where the plant is native, it has natural controls and reportedly behaves itself. In the U.S., however, it was like the rabbits in Australia and multiplied beyond all human understanding.

Just about everywhere the plant was declared a noxious weed. A mite-borne virus that slowly kills the plant was quickly and widely distributed. Despite an all-out battle, however, Multiflora Rose still persists in most states.

Few things are all bad, however, and agscience folks now inform us that Multiflora Rose is excellent goat fodder.

I wonder what an invasion of goats will be like.

Zionsville philanthropists meet quarterly to give where they live

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Call it beginner’s luck, but the first time certainly was a charm for Mark Plassman.

On his first visit to the Zionsville Cencover story tury Club, not only was he selected to present his charity, but he left with a $6,800 check to donate to it.

The Century Club is a group of men, predominantly from Zionsville, who meet quarterly to support a charity. Each attendee interested in presenting a cause drops his name in a hat, and three are selected to explain why their charity should receive a donation. The club members vote through a secret ballot, then everyone writes a $100 check to the winner.

“Our motto is to give where you live,” said Zionsville resident Todd Sullivan, the nonprofit’s chief organizer. “My mother is in a group in Ohio. They’re up to 250 women now, so when they get together, they give away 25 grand a pop. We’re just trying to grow.”

The club’s name refers to its goal of having 100 members.

At the last few meetings, Sullivan said attendance has been approximately 60 to 70 men, and the group has been growing through word of mouth.

“Everyone here is here because a friend or neighbor told them,” he said.

Sullivan said the first time the group met there were 20 men in attendance. The meetings are held the second Thursday of the month in February, May, August and November at the American Legion, 9950 E. 600 S., Zionsville. The next meeting is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

Plassman’s charity was Noble of Indiana.

“My sister has cerebral palsy, and she benefited from an organization like Noble of Indiana in Fort Wayne,” said Plassman, a Zionsville resident who grew up in Fort Wayne. “It was very helpful for early childhood development and allowed her to ultimately mainstream in elementary and high school education. I wanted to find an organization in Indianapolis (that is) similar.”

His sister, Anne Plassman, 39, now lives in Muncie.

Plassman said Noble of Indiana provides job placement and workforce development for those with disabilities. Plassman has chaired a golf outing for Noble of Indiana for 11 years.

Rock steady

Plassman said the $6,800 will be a “huge help” for this year’s golf outing.

His brother-in-law, Jon Weed, brought Plassman to his first Century Club meeting. Weed made the presentation for November’s winning charity, Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville, which received $6,500 from the Century Club. Weed has been on the organization’s board for nine years and has been president for two years.

“It was perfect because it was a time of the year where we had a lot of expenses we didn’t plan for, like repairs of air conditioning,” Weed said. “(Century Club) has been a really neat community organization. We just need to get it to 100 guys. To be able to hand someone a check for $10,000 in one night is something.”

Zionsville resident Randy Judd knows firsthand the value of Rock Steady Boxing. The mission of the Indianapolis organization is to empower people with Parkinson’s disease.

“I found out about Rock Steady shortly after I was diagnosed,” Judd said. “I’ve been going to Rock Steady for 2 1/2 years. I serve on the board of directors at Rock Steady.”

Judd presented Rock Steady Boxing, the previous winning charity, $6,700 in February.

Rock Steady Boxing was started in 2006 by Scott Newman, former Marion County prosecutor, who is living with Parkinson’s disease.

“A police officer, who is a boxer, invited Scott to go for an exercise, and Scott recognized the benefits immediately,” Judd said.

Rock Steady Boxing gave a demonstration during the May Century Club meeting.

Rock Steady Executive Director Joyce Johnson said a 10-minute segment on CBS Sunday Morning in November did more for the group than it had been able to do previously.

“Our phones went crazy, and our website shut down,” Johnson said. “Everybody wanted to have Rocky Steady Boxing in their community. A year ago, we were training 10 or 12 people a month. After that piece, we are training 50 to 60 a month. They learn to do it and replicate in their communities.”

Johnson said they used to have to do the training with a tiny TV and a little PowerPoint presentation. The donation allowed Rock Steady to secure a 10-foot-wide screen that comes down from the ceiling, an overhead projector and a speaker.

Road workers deserve better Several times a week, we audibly laugh at some of the news releases that sail across the transom here. And what is really incredible is that many come from government agencies about things (a) you already should know about, (b) at which you would roll your eyes, or (c) both. Last week, we received one from INDOT about drivers’ responsibilities in construction zones. We read the list, but we didn’t laugh. It made us think mostly about the commonsensical items presented in the missive that never should have had to be listed. But we, in general, comprise a people that seems to not care much about the details. As long as we’re able to drive between the orange barrels with our knees while cradling cell phones on our shoulders in an effort to keep hands free to open Vitamin Water, it’s all good. It also brought to mind a recent weekday afternoon, when one of us was returning from an engagement at IUPUI, and, there was a construction zone. One of the workers was wildly flailing his arms in an attempt to get motorists to slow their speeds. Sadly, it didn’t work. Over in Illinois, where there are construction zones, so, too, are there signs that read, “My mommy works here.” Some might ask, “Aw, isn’t that cute?” They would be wrong and missing the larger message. The highway workers are there because they’re making improvements to make your motoring life better, and they deserve the same courtesies as pedestrians. Fear not, you’ll get to your destination in one piece. It’s everyone’s business to make sure the workers do, too.

Sunk costs and lost causes Commentary by Terry Anker It seems that along with age is delivered a diminished interest in fighting the uphill battle to stay personally up-to-date. Where once we coveted each and every new style, color and cut, we now, if the suit still fits and well-serves its intended purpose, find an off-trend width of lapel or shade of blue as insufficient to compel replacement. Have we all become collectively less stylish? Do we care not about our presentation, or are we stuck in some past decade, comfortable with the standards of that now expired era?

But if the sofa/curtain/countertop/suit/ whatever is still in good working order, why would we feel a need to replace it? Once we made the decision to acquire the stylish dusty-rose toaster oven, does it make sense to buy another simply because it is skinned in stainless steel? Basic economics teaches us that our sunk cost is only recovered via use. We pay $100 for shoes to walk 100 miles. We then only walk 10 miles. We could

argue we have $90 left in them. Unless sold to someone else for $90 (or more), we’ve forfeited the remainder of the worth. Once purchased, the kicks should be used until consumed. Even so, how do we discount for style and convenience? Is there a case where the first 10 miles is worth $100 and the rest nothing?

Some people buy a new house every few years. They want new style, new appliances and new landscaping. Likewise, clothes, worn-once, find a new home through charity (or worse, the landfill). And, leftovers don’t have a home in the freezer but, instead, the garbage. Should we live in a world where sunk costs are a lost cause? If so, how can we hope to measure the right time for the exchange? Maybe it’s time to go shopping.

Summer could not have come soon enough here at Chez Wilson. The last week of May in particular was a humor striking testament to how the stress of the school year can wreak havoc.

Yesterday, for example, I showed up at work with a hole in my pants, directly over my right buttock. Luckily I had a sweater, and I was able to make it through without incident, though I felt stupid walking around in a warm building with extra clothing tied around my waste. What am I? A middleschooler surprised by Aunt Flo? At lunch, I received a text from my husband telling me that the high school had just called: our oldest was in the midst of missing a final. Remember those college nightmares where your alarm fails and you wake up two hours into your psychology exam? It was happening! He made it with time to complete the test and claims he just got his schedule mixed up, but I know part of the problem is the craziness at our house.

To wit, my youngest threw a veritable conniption fit last night because we couldn’t find her math book. After searching high and low, all I could come up with was a PRE bible from 2007. “I feel like I’ve seen it recently … but where?” I’m sure it’s under a bed or in a closet, but it could also be fetching a fine price at Goodwill. The real issue is that we have yet to recover from our kitchen remodel when, in preparation for demo, I stashed or donated cabinet contents, small appliances and all manner of chachkies. A missing pre-algebra textbook is the least of my problems. We still have unemptied coolers from Derby!

And then there’s last week’s “Andrew Incident” when we left said kid at French tutoring with a dead phone. For two hours!

When I eventually remembered, we found Andrew roadside, about a half-mile into a three-mile walk home. Parents of the year?

So thank you Jesus for summer vacation.

The Wilsons sure need it. Peace out.

Booming ideas Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Baby Boomers have not been given the credit we deserve for the successful adaption we made to new technology humor back in the ’50s and ’60s, such as: • Post-it notes: I quickly learned to peel each sheet off flawlessly. I also came up with the idea of using different-colored slips of paper for different things. This was not in the directions. Of course, Postits are still used today. I am constantly applying notes to my fridge, desk and mirror.

Some habits really stick with you. (Sorry.)

• The Rolodex: The idea was actually 2,000 years old, but there were no phones then, so there was no point in making one. I meticulously fit the notched edge of the cards into the device. It took a long time to find the numbers I wanted before I read the directions and discovered I needed to arrange the names alphabetically.

• Remote control: I easily mastered the on/off switch and could adjust the volume without even looking at the buttons.

Channel selection required a little more skill, so for about a year I only watched

CBS. The early models were not wireless, so I never lost the remote. Those were the good old days.

• Ziploc bags: Sealing that little bag took a careful hand. The slots for closure were originally labeled “male” and “female” tracks. I didn’t know what that really referred to, but when it finally dawned on me, I began to enjoy packing my own lunches.

• Transistor radio: I could go from AM to FM seamlessly. However, I frequently poked myself in the eye with the antenna.

Kids today would be baffled by a transistor radio. What’s the dial for? Why can’t I ask it for directions to Greenwood?

• Velcro: Invented in the ’60s, one of its earliest applications was for bras. I was way too young to understand or witness the application of the product. Didn’t matter. I was having way too much fun opening and closing Ziploc bags.

Shop blossoms in first 3 years

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Three years ago during prom season, the line was out the door of Nana’s Flower Shop.

The former owner and anniversary his staff had left, and temporary employee Brian Davies was left to run things by himself.

He decided that something needed to be done and soon purchased the shop, changing the name to Zionsville Flower Company, “to let people know there was a new owner, new service but higher quality.”

On June 1, Davies celebrated three years in business. Most of his changes over the past several years have centered on the variety and quality of the flowers in his shop, along with a change to the water system. After leaving some flowers in water overnight “they just didn’t look right” the next day, he said. A little investigating uncovered that the building’s water ran through a softener.

He soon installed a filtration system to weed out impurities and mix in floral preservatives for the flowers.

“If you just top (an arrangement) off with filtered water, you’ll extend the life of the arrangement by three to five days,” he said.

er arranging as a hobby, and with the support of his grandmother and friends, became certified, eventually teaching at IUPUI. “I have my grandmother’s green thumb,” he said.

He estimates his team created more than 4,000 bouquets last year. He looks forward to the business’ continued growth but not at the expense of customer service.

“We don’t play by the rules,” Davies said.

“We really want to do what the customer wants.”

More restaurants, other retailers coming to Anson

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com The third of four buildings in the Villages at Anson will soon be home to five new businesses. Dunkin’ Donuts, new biz Flamme Burger, Sprint, Classic Cleaners and Xcel-Fit Club have all announced they will be tenants in the Whitestown development.

“It’s huge, because this is continued retail and restaurant investment into the county,” said Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton.

“The assessed value is what we want, because that is how we pay for services, how we tax. It shows a very healthy economy and shows our growth and makes it less risky to make an investment here, so I think that is why you are seeing a lot of investment.”

Norton said he can only speculate on why the five businesses decided to locate in The Villages.

“I think that some of them may have talked to their counterparts in (buildings) one and two,” he said. “Which Wich and Pie Five are doing well. Eighty-five percent of restaurants fail within the first year, research shows, but we were told by someone that Which Wich had the highest sales in their first month here than any other store in the chain in the

country.”

It has also been a good marketing tool for attracting new residents, he said.

“One of those items on the list of amenities you want is a diverse food base, if you will. Meijer helps as a grocery, too, because we aren’t in a food desert,” Norton said. “So, of course it helps. It is a people attractor, and you need people in turn to attract higher-end industry and higher-end jobs, which are going where people are and not waiting for people to go to them anymore.”

Construction on building three in The Villages began in January and is expected to be complete by the third quarter of 2016.

Seven businesses and restaurants currently are tenants in the first two buildings in the development.

Home inventory down 14.2 percent Commentary by Jim Litten April was the 52nd consecutive month of increasing year-to-date home sale prices, growing an average 1.9 percent real estate in central Indiana. While prices grew, home inventory stayed tight, as available homes were down 14.2 percent from this time last year.

Boone County saw growth across the board. Average home prices were up 7.3 percent to $279,603. Inventory saw a slight gain of 0.7 percent with 418 homes available as of April 30. The number of pended sales is also one of the highest in the 13-county region F.C. Tucker tracks. Compared to last year, monthto-date pended sales are up 10.5 percent, while year-to-date sales are up 15.5 percent.

• In Zionsville, the average year-to-date home sale price increased 16.6 percent to $394,184.

• Inventory moved at a slightly faster pace in Zionsville in April 2016. Overall, homes sold in 71 days – three fewer days than this time last year.

• Buyers in Zionsville had more options available to them. Last month, 198 homes were available for sale – 18 more homes compared to April 2015.

• Pended home sales slipped in Zionsville.

In April 2016, 42 homes sold – nine fewer sales compared to April 2015.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville last month, one was priced $1,000,000 to $1,999,999; seven were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 22 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; nine were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and three were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

The rate at which the average sale price is increasing is strong, but it’s also showing signs of tapering. From 2013 to 2015, prices grew rapidly, but now, they’re beginning to level off, similar to the beginning of 2012.

Get fit through dance

By Amanda Foust • news@currentzionsville.com Kim Compano and Chana Sweeney enjoyed their experience staying in shape with REFIT so much that they decided to class begin offering the dance workout classes on their own.

The Zionsville residents have launched a ladies-only Monday night REFIT class at College Park Church. The program is designed to build confidence and develop the whole person in body, mind and spirit.

“We want the rippling effect in our community,” Sweeney said. “We use (REFIT) as a vehicle to connect people, hearts and lives.”

The hour-long class includes cardio and strength training combined with dance movements for a wide range of participants. It is designed for anyone from experienced dancers to beginners.

“They are simple and easy moves that anyone can do,” Campano said.

The same songs are chosen across all REFIT locations so participants can feel welcome everywhere. Online videos are available as well.

Both women began their REFIT experience at Traders Point Christian Church in Whitestown, where they developed a desire to become instructors. They aim to create a

welcoming community with no pressure – and it’s working, participants say.

“I feel welcome and accepted by the people there, and it’s wonderfully freeing,” said participant Becky Brooking.

Rules of the road trip Commentary by Mary Brunner, MD, Riley Physicians Pediatrics – Zionsville Summer is a popular time for travel, especially road trips. While traveling with children can present challenges, with family some planning and creativity, family road trips can be a pleasant experience for all. Here are some tips for car travel this summer.

Safety first. Before leaving on a road trip, review car safety seat and child restraint information to ensure you’re in compliance with the current guidelines and state laws. Fire departments have trained personnel who can check to make sure your car seat is properly installed. Call to find out if your local station offers this service.

Map out rest stops. Long car trips mean lots of sitting. It’s important for everyone to get out of the car and stretch their legs, so plan frequent breaks. If you’re traveling with toddlers or school-age children, perhaps check a smartphone map to find rest stops where children can run and play for a few minutes.

Pack snacks and plenty of water. While convenience store snacking is tempting,

choose the healthier route by packing wholesome snacks. Fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and whole grain crackers, granola bars and trail mix are good options. Stock a cooler with water to keep everyone hydrated.

Don’t forget the fun. To fight the boredom that often accompanies road trips, bring ageappropriate games and activities for kids to pass the time. While tablets and smartphones are popular, limit screen time in the car, as you would at home, and consider travelfriendly games, coloring and activity books and crafts, too.

Outsmart the sun. While not essential when riding in a car, sunglasses and sunscreen are a must for summer vacations if children will be spending time outdoors. Wearing sunglasses – even at a young age – protects against the development of cataracts later in life, and sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer.

Spiced pork and apple burger with maple Dijon Submitted recipe courtesy of Tree Top and Family Features Servings: 6 Ingredients: 3 tablespoons maple syrup, 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard, 2 pounds ground pork, 1/2 cup Tree Top Natural Apple Sauce, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon dry mustard, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 6 hamburger buns, baby spinach leaves Directions: Stir maple syrup and mustard together in a small bowl. Set aside. Spray a large, non-stick grill pan or griddle with cooking spray, and place over medium to medium/ high heat.

Mix pork, apple sauce, salt, chili powder, dry mustard, pepper and cinnamon together in a large mixing bowl. Form mixture into six patties. Place patties in pan, and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Turn, and cook an additional 4 to 5 minutes or until done.

To serve, spread bun bottoms with maple mustard mixture. Top each with a patty, spinach leaf and bun top. If desired, toast buns and top with cheddar cheese, grilled onions, pickles, tomatoes or other favorite toppings.

Serve with crispy, sweet potato fries and steamed beans for an easy but special meal.

Hoge brings solo act to Carmel

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Will Hoge is getting back to his solo acoustic roots.

Hoge, who recently released a music live album from solo performances, will perform at The Warehouse, 254 First Ave. SW, Carmel, at 8 p.m. June 11.

“So it’s given me an excuse to play some old songs and new songs and get back to the core of the acoustic guitar storytelling part of this that started it all,” Hoge said.

Hoge said he enjoys playing in living roomstyle concert venues such as The Warehouse.

“It gives me a break from the big, loud rock clubs,” Hoge said.

Hoge, 43, is conducting a solo tour the rest of the year, except for a gig with his band at Americana Music Festival Sept. 20-25 in Nashville, Tenn.

Hoge, who grew up just outside Nashville in Franklin, Tenn., had planned to be a high school history teacher and basketball coach.

“Once I got to college, I realized it wasn’t something I was as passionate about as I was writing and singing and playing in bands,” Hoge said.

His career was put on hold when he was involved in a serious scooter accident in 2008,

breaking several bones.

“It took about a year to walk again, and to be honest I probably jumped back into it quicker than I should have,” he said.

Hoge has a reputation as a prolific songwriter.

“The ones that are good hopefully find themselves out in the world,” Hoge said of his songs. “The ones that aren’t good hopefully never make it past my notebook.”

One keeper earned Hoge a Grammy nomination for Country Song of the Year for “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” recorded by the Eli Young Band. Hoge co-wrote it with Eric Paslay.

The goal was to create a large deck for outdoor living space that overlooks the beautiful yard. This upgrade allows the homeowners to entertain at the convenience of the main level of their home.

1. A large, curved deck was built to replace the dated wood staircase.

Copenhagen’s iconic statue of the Little Mermaid is a must see for visitors. It has also become an inviting target for travel vandals and protestors.

In 1819, Hans Christian Andersen, then 14, moved to Copenhagen, hoping to become an actor. When that did not work out, he began writing, publishing his first story at age 17.

Initially focusing on fairy tales he had heard as a child, Andersen soon began writing the original stories now famous around the world, including “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Snow Queen” and “The Little Mermaid.”

In 1909, the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Brewery was so charmed by a Copenhagen ballet based on “The Little Mermaid,” a story about a mermaid who leaves the sea in search of a human soul, that he commissioned a statue of a mermaid using the ballerina as the model. When the ballerina refused to pose nude, the sculptor’s wife became the model for the body. In 1913, the four-foot-tall bronze statue was perched on a

granite boulder on the waterfront in Copenhagen’s harbor, where it has become the symbol of the city, attracting a million admirers every year, both by land and by sea.

The Little Mermaid has been attacked repeatedly. She has lost her head twice and her arm once. She has been splashed or sprayed with paint at least five times, sometimes by groups who see the statue as degrading to women. On two occasions, the Little Mermaid has been dressed in Muslim clothes, once to protest Turkey’s effort to join the European Union. In 2003, the entire statue was blown into the water by explosives. The obvious deterrent of moving the statue further from shore has been rejected. A persistent rumor that the original statue is hidden away somewhere has never been substantiated.
