By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Jelka is a dog who loves to chase tennis balls, which has turned out to be a blessing and a curse.

The Zionsville Police Dept. repolice cruited the 2-year-old Belgian Malinois in part because of her “ball drive,” which is key to training a K-9 officer, but it also led her to dash into the street in front of a pickup truck May 15 when she played fetch with her handler, officer Josh Stutesman, at their Westfield home.

The truck struck Jelka, leaving her with a fractured leg, a hole in her diaphragm and a punctured lung that wasn’t found until it was almost too late. At first, veterinarians warned Stutesman she might not survive, but less than two weeks later she’s well on her way to making a near-complete recovery.

“When I take her outside, she automatically still wants to go chase rabbits, so she’s definitely getting back to herself,” Stutesman said. “She doesn’t even recognize that she has been through three different surgeries.”

Stutesman is recovering well from the ordeal, too. He is thankful he didn’t see Jelka get hit by the truck, although sometimes in his mind he still sees her running back to him on three legs, as she did after the accident.

“She’s got the best spirit of a dog that I’ve ever seen,” he said. “I don’t want that to go away.”

Funds and forgiveness The ZPD K-9 program has been completely funded through donations since it began in 2013. The fund became depleted soon after the accident as vet bills began rolling in. Stutesman said the cost to treat Jelka could reach $15,000 or higher.

So far, the community has stepped up in a big way. Steve Russo, a longtime supporter of the ZPD K-9, program, launched a GoFundMe page to support Jelka, which reached its $6,000 fundraising goal in three days. He also started a Facebook page to track her progress and has scheduled a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings in Whitestown from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

“We love our dogs and our police department here in Zionsville. The outpouring of support both in donations and prayers by so many great donors here in Zionsville is proof positive,” Russo said.

Stutesman also is grateful for the outpouring of support, and not just from those who give financially.

healthy.”

Stutesman is a man of strong faith, and he said that made it a no-brainer for him forgive the pickup truck driver who hit Jelka.

“One reason we’re able to forgive is because this is what (God) would want, but (also), the guy didn’t do anything wrong,” he said.

Stutesman said he encountered the man driving through the neighborhood again soon after Jelka came home from the vet.

“We’ve become friends,” Stutesman said.

“He’s actually met Jelka now, in a good way.”

Back to work In the days after the accident, ZPD officials indicated there was a good chance that Jelka might not ever be able to go back to work.

Now, her vets say she should be able to return to full duty in three to five months.

Jelka will take it easy as she recovers, and Stutesman knows there will be a bit of a learning curve when it’s time to start full training again. But one of his biggest questions about her recovery has already been answered: Would she still be eager to chase tennis balls?

“I brought in a tennis ball to see what she would do,” Stutesman said. “Her eyes got real big and her ears popped up.”

Zionsville Nature Center will offer special activities June 10 to 18 designed to get kids and families outside to enjoy nature nature.

“Nature Play Days is an initiative that was started last year through the Indiana Children and Nature Network,” said Mindy Murdock, Zionsville park naturalist. “The idea is to encourage families Murdock throughout Indiana to get outside and unplugged.”

There is also a social media contest in conjunction with the program.

“If people are out and about and they snap a picture of something they’re doing and use the hashtag #ICANNaturePlayDay on social media, they can win prizes,” she said.

Murdock hopes each year the program will continue to grow.

“My hope is in the years to come it becomes an annual thing,” she said.

Aaron Krerowicz doesn’t travel “Across the Universe,” but he does go around North America to give presentations music about The Beatles.

“I had nine tours last year and have 10 tours this year,” said Krerowicz, who lectures at various stops on each tour.

On June 20, Krerowicz will present “From the Shadow of JFK: The Rise of Beatlemania in America” at 6:30 p.m. June 20 at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N 5th St., Zionsville. Krerowicz said the hour-long presentation explains The Beatles’ popularity rise in the U.S. in early 1964, not long after President John Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963.

Krerowicz, 31, also has recently published two encyclopedias, one each on the structural and harmonic analysis of the legendary British group.

“These are encyclopedias of analysis to explore why this band’s music is so great,” he said.

In June 2015, Krerowicz quit his other musical pursuits to concentrate on writing books and giving presentations on The Beatles.

“If I came home from work and spent an hour a day, it would take me 20 years to write these books,” he said. “The idea to make this a full-time career is to put all my creative energies into analysis and lecture tours.”

5K promotes healthy lifestyle

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville will host a 5K Family Fun Run and Health Fair on June 24. The club hopes to running inspire families to engage in healthy physical activities through the event.

“We don’t do it as a fundraiser but rather an opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles and physical fitness to the community,” said Sarah Webler, ZBAGC unit director.

“It’s at our east club, and the whole point is to make it fun. It’s family friendly and dog friendly. It’s really laid back. The fee is minimal. It’s for the families to make memories doing something healthy and active.”

The run will include raffle tickets along the way to encourage participants to keep going. All the raffle items will promote physical fitness in some way.

“I have businesses in the community that have donated items that continue to promote physical fitness and healthy lifestyles. We have passes to Skyzone or Monkey Joe’s. There is stuff for kids, but also for adults,” Webler said. “They want to go get that extra ticket so they have a higher chance of winning a prize at the end. In the

past we’ve had workout passes, fitness classes and bikes.”

The health fair will include various organizations that promote healthy lifestyles.

A good book.

Professor Justin McDaniel is the chair of the Dept. of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Prompted by the realization that an overwhelming majority of his students had never read most of the best 20th century literature, he requires students of his class, RELS256, to spend one seven-hour evening a week doing nothing but reading. No prerequisites. No cellphones. No interruptions. Just plain reading of high-quality books.

In New York City, bibliotherapist Noreen Tomassi is the executive director of the Center for Fiction. Although careful not to discount the importance and necessity of psychiatry, she says her book-a-month prescription for clients helps decrease stress in our rushed and bellicose world.

This isn’t new news. In a 2013 Cambridge

University study, Maria Nikolajeva, professor of education, wrote that she, “used Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel ‘The Secret Garden’ to demonstrate … emotional literacy can be enhanced through the reading of fiction.”

And in 2013 at Emory University in Atlanta, neuroscientist Gregory Berns and his team of researchers discovered both immediate and lasting changes in the brains of readers which “suggest that reading a novel can transport you into the body of the protagonist … that good stories can put you in someone else’s shoes in a figurative sense.”

A lot of folks are planning summer vacations and stay-cations and ways to stay cool this summer.

Beck’s, ISU train drone pilots

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com A unique partnership between an Indiana university and a seed company is designed to help Hoosier farmers farming grow better crops. Beck’s Hybrids and Indiana State University are working to train drone pilots to get an eye in the sky.

“Historically, the problem farmers run into is that patterns within their fields get larger than they can see standing on the ground, but once they get some elevation they can see those patterns easier,” said Jim Love, UAV and light robotics manager for Beck’s, which recently opened a new corporate hangar at Indianapolis Executive Airport in Zionsville.

“They can establish what caused the problem or, in some cases, why some areas are better than others, so this is a tool for better scouting to get uniformity in fields,” Love said.

ISU condensed what had been an eightweek course into a two-day seminar for Beck’s. Training started in Nov. 2016, with three sessions already completed.

date, with another session tentatively scheduled for fall. The new drone pilots received roughly 16 hours of training. Love said the ultimate goal of the program is to help customers be successful.

“We are constantly looking at new products and innovation, and this is just another advancement in technology to help farmers make more timely assessments,” he said. “In the old days you might have a 10-day waiting period to get an aerial photo, and now you have it right away. So, because these are timely and give more actionable data, (farmers) have a better chance of making corrections midseason.”

Remembering Decoration Day Commentary by Ward Degler

The first time I remember Memorial Day it was still called Decoration Day. Folks in my hometown would go plain talk out to the cemetery on that day and put flowers on the graves of soldiers who died during World War I. Actually, Decoration Day began in the spring of 1868 in Arlington National Cemetery. Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic made a speech about the loss of human life during the Civil War. After he spoke, a crowd of 5,000 decorated the graves of 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

I recall Decoration Day as a somber affair. Folks went to the cemetery and then brought their memories home. There were no backyard barbecues, and as far as I know, it wasn’t a three-day weekend.

In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson officially changed the name to Memorial Day. A special memorial wall now commemorates the thousands who died in Vietnam.

It was formally dedicated in 1982 and folks bring flowers on Memorial Day. A memorial to the Forgotten War — Korea — was dedicated in 1986 in Washington, and after many years of planning, a World War II memorial was finally completed in 2004.

The wars keep coming, of course, and so do the flag-draped caskets. There is much to remember. The graves at Arlington as well as every other national cemetery in the world are decorated each Memorial Day with flowers and an American flag.

Sure, it’s a three-day holiday now, and people everywhere fire up the backyard grills. The Indy 500 dominates around here for the month of May. But we still go to the cemetery with flowers and flags. Race fans stand in quiet remembrance as the somber strains of Taps echo through the air at the track.

And in the hearts of each of us there remains the eternal flame of someone we knew and loved who fought for our freedom and who never came home. And for those it will always be Decoration Day. By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A magazine, TV shows and countless blogs are dedicated to living with less, and now a Zionsville resident has created a website dedicated to tiny home cover story rental.

Try It Tiny launched in March, connecting tiny homeowners with renters and landowners.

The idea came to Maggie Daniels after listing her rural Zionsville property on Airbnb.

“I ended up getting a lot of interest,” she said. “I was leaving my property every week.”

She decided to add a tiny home to her property to serve as a temporary residence so she wouldn’t rely on friends and family when her home was rented. Learning more about the tiny house movement, she discovered that people are interested in temporarily downsizing “just to see what it’s like.”

“That’s where the lightbulb started to go off,” she said.

“As long as I didn’t rent them both at the same time, I wouldn’t have to keep leaving,” she said.

A former employee of Kite Realty, Daniels began toying with the idea of creating a website for tiny home and prop-

erty rental. By the end of last year, she raised $175,000 in seed money to help with website development and marketing.

“I was fortunate enough to have folks that believed in the idea, even though I didn’t have the product built,” Daniels said. “I think any entrepreneur would probably say they have a healthy amount of fear and skepticism at the same time that they have hope and excitement. Sheer paranoia keeps me up at least once or twice a week.”

Although part of the concept is similar to other home rental websites, Daniels adds a unique opportunity to rent land for those whose homes are mobile. She estimates that 75 percent of tiny homes are mobile, although the number is difficult to track.

Across the nation, 1 percent of homes are listed at fewer than 1,000 square feet. But because they don’t require the same building permits as larger homes, they are more difficult to track.

Land can be rented to anything that’s 400 square feet or less, whether it’s an RV or mobile tiny home.

“I’ve tried to be able to offer a level of specificity that helps in terms of getting the right sense of that land (for rent),” she said. “That’s the hardest part. There is no real template for what that looks like.”

Parking availability, what type of ground the house will sit on and whether RV hookups and water are available are among the questions hosts are asked.

“There really isn’t a defined standard,” she said. “That happens to be the biggest ambiguity,” Rental homes are ideally 400 square feet, but Daniels said there are no rules about size defining what a tiny house is. The average tiny house is 186 square feet, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

“I think the movement is more about the lifestyle than it is about the structure,” she said.

The website is recruiting hosts with a free listing, and 500 people have signed up for a newsletter.

Daniels’ website rentals are all in the United States. She has no plans to extend internationally.

On April 20, the Boone County Economic Development Corp. presented Maggie Daniels a free membership to zWORKS, Zionsville’s co-working space. Boone EDC presents a zWORKS membership to a local entrepreneuer once a year. The entrepreneur who founded Crave.ly, an app that assists people who are searching for certain types of food, was the previous recipient.

“This is just a tiny idea,” she said.

Daniels also created the website Dream Tiny, a side project that is “akin to Pinterest” for small house owners and dreamers.

“That’s been a really exciting tool to engage with the industry,” she said. “It’s a fun way to see what the latest and greatest is that’s out there. It’s the realization that the tiny house movement isn’t just for those who live in a tiny home full time. I think the movement is rooted in selfsustainability, the low carbon footprint, this minimalist lifestyle, and I think that it is here to stay.”

Airbnb has recently come under fire in Indiana, with Carmel sending letters to known short-term lessors in January warning that they were in violation of city zoning laws and were required to cease operations.

In February. the Indiana House passed a bill barring local governments from banning short-term rentals with certain guidelines such as maximum length of rental. The bill did not become law, but legislators have expressed interest in re-examining the issue in the future.

“I don’t want to comment too much on this,” Daniels said.

“There are a lot of differences between what we’re trying to do and what that bill is trying to accomplish.”

Daniels said that her website would limit rentals to a maximum of 30 days.

Sinking costs Commentary by Terry Anker In for a penny, in for a pound is a cliché originally intended to point to the equivalency of punishment under early English rule. It held that failure to repay a penny would be as severe as that for the much larger English pound sterling.

Today, most use the expression to indicate that once someone has gone so far down an intended path, they must apply whatever resources, even if excessive, to see the task through to completion. The notion holds there is a point of no return.

In business, one might call this phenomenon a sunk cost. Once one has invested so much in a project or person, the incentive to see it through to completion can outweigh a prudent decision to review the circumstances dispassionately and walk away.

Yet occasionally, pushing just a bit more provides significant enhancement.

Universal Studios Orlando offers Fast Pass technology. In a nutshell, a ticket through the park becomes supercharged with private (much shorter) lines for accessing the attractions. At roughly double the ticket price, a purchaser can navigate the experience with many fewer line-hours-per-ride.

After one has spent thousands of dollars and much precious vacation time, sunk cost theory might persuade us that a few hundred more is a pittance to ensure that ours is a robust, full and memorable trip.

Still, sunk cost theory can lead to a sinking feeling. In us, the methodology creates a cavalier attitude toward spending. For purveyors, it can create complacency in innovation.

Let’s address childhood trauma Commentary by Tami Silverman Nearly 20 years ago, the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study changed how we understand trauma’s effect on children.

It inspired countless studies, intervention innovations, trainings and program assessments aimed at helping our kids be healthy, safe and successful.

The ACE Study highlighted the cumulative effect multiple types of trauma have on a child. In addition to examining direct traumas, such as physical and sexual abuse or serious neglect, the study also measured the effects of exposure to experiences such as divorce, domestic violence, or living with someone who had a mental illness, substance use disorder, or was incarcerated. The cumulative effect of these ACEs can result in lasting cognitive, emotional and behavioral problems.

Yet the impact of these experiences varies from child to child. The American Academy of Pediatrics distinguishes normal stress, some of which is developmentally beneficial, from repeated or prolonged exposure to ACEs. Experts say stressful events aren’t necessarily traumatic if they are countered by caring adults.

We know we have reason to worry about the well-being of Hoosier children.

New research from the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that Indiana had the nation’s greatest percentage increase in the number of children placed in foster

care. Indiana’s Dept. of Child Services reported a sizable increase in substantiated cases of abuse or neglect last year, and more than half of removals were due to parental substance abuse.

The ACE Study helps us understand that addressing Indiana’s opioid epidemic is not only vital to the health of the adults using those drugs but is also critical to protecting the children who are exposed to substance use and the turmoil it causes.

I encourage everyone in a profession serving children to dig into the ACE Study. It forever changed how many of us view the impact of trauma on kids. Our communities need to ensure there are school- and community-based programs to work with these complex cases. They must also include support systems for the caring adults who work with these young people.

By acknowledging the complexities of childhood experiences, we can work to develop interventions with lasting impact. There are no easy answers, yet creating an Indiana where all Hoosier children can grow to be healthy and productive citizens is worth pursuing.

Doo and I recently held a family meeting to hammer out the details for a homicidefree summer. Our four children humor were invited to share their thoughts, and as expected, the biggest sticking point was over Xbox. Our boys argued that since it’s summer, they should be able to do whatever they want, including wasting weeks at a time sniping virtual zombies. We felt it might lead to serial killer status. Decision? Two hours max a day. Suck it up, kids!

Also in the plan, the reinstatement of the “I’m Bored Jar,” a repository for the dollar fines handed out to anyone muttering any derivative of the word “boring.” Proceeds will go to an end-of-summer Dairy Queen bonanza and to prevent a “Bud Light Jar” phenomenon, the perp will be assigned some degrading task, like scrubbing the basement toilet with her toothbrush. Don’t mess with Mom! And once again, to further enhance this summer’s salt mine experience, “Amish Day” will occur weekly. It was proposed unwittingly five years ago by our then 10year old son who, at the aforementioned decision to limit electronic interaction, cried, “I’m not going all Amish!” Should have kept your mouth shut, Andrew, for you will indeed go Amish. No video games, computers, television or phones for one whole day.

They must use their imaginations and find old-fashioned forms of amusement. It may not work, but their discomfort should prove highly entertaining. Mwah-ha-ha!

So the chore chart is up and rockin’, and the Forced Family Game night schedule (“you will have fun!”) is in full swing. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that our careful planning will result in a blissful summer vacation with minimum shanking. If not, at least I’ll have some solid column material!

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Before our last vacation, I made an appointment with the orthopedist. My left knee was killing me, a probhumor lem that goes back to an old college football injury. I was drunk and fell out of the stands during homecoming.

I asked why my former doctor retired.

Apparently, he wanted to devote more time to skiing. Nice for him, but for the patients scheduled for surgery, this is really rubbing it in.

“Dick,” Dr. Estes said, “I hope your vacation is not going to be too strenuous, considering your knee.”

“My wife wants to go to Canada to go hiking.”

“Sounds a bit rocky.”

“Yes, the mountains are pretty rugged terrain.”

“No, I mean your marriage. What wife makes a husband endure that much pain?”

His nurse walked in with the big grin of someone who was going to stick a needle directly in your throbbing kneecap. I’d been through this before.

“Time for a little cortisone. You know the

drill,” she said.

I told her “drill” is not the best word choice before administering a shot.

The cortisone helped, but most of the Banff trails were too rugged for me, so I waited in the car for my wife and son while they walked along the Hoodoos, waited while they hiked in Johnston Canyon and waited while they explored the Marsh Loop.

One of the trails had a sign that said: “Handicapped and stroller friendly.” I question the friendliness part. A guy in a wheelchair was griping at me to speed it up, and a toddler in a stroller was shaking his fist and crabbing at me to get over to the right so he could pass.

This week, I called the surgeon’s office and said I was ready for a new knee. “OK,” said Leslie, his assistant, “but the earliest Dr. Estes can fit you in is September. Will you be OK waiting?”

“Of course,” I said, “I’ve gotten really, really good at that.”

Cartridge detects synthetic drugs quickly

Synthetic drugs are man-made, mind-altering drugs that contain similar ingredients to those of Manicke marijuana, cocaine, heroin and others but contain different chemical compounds. Synthetic drugs are sold as alternative options with a higher potency in a smaller concentration.

“The problem, though, is that (synthetic drugs) are quite dangerous, because these compounds have not been tested in humans or even animals in the vast majority of cases, so very little is known about the effect they could have on people or what an appropriate dose, if anything, would be,” Manicke said.

The healing power of stem cells Commentary by Dmitry M. Arbuck, MD We are at a truly revolutionary time in health and medicine. The introduction of stem cell technology represcience sents innovation on the same level as the development of antibiotics or the invention of modern imaging (MRIs, etc.). Stem cells are already changing the way medicine is delivered, increasing lifespans and saving countless lives.

Scientists and researchers have been studying the benefits of stem cells for more than 30 years. They have found that these special cells provide great benefits all over the body, from muscles and joints to chronic diseases, to growing new teeth.

You may have read about athletes treated with stem cells to speed healing after an injury or about burn victims who use stem cell therapy to minimize scarring.

Hancock Theatre presents ‘A Night in India’

When it’s a full-length story, it’s created to have different ups and downs within the story.

When we do several pieces of several different shows, we pick all the high-energy, high-stamina, exciting sections. Since we are doing several different pieces, it means quadruple times the costumes. Every time we go off stage, we have to make a costume change.”

“A Night in India” will be presented at 7 p.m. June 9 and 10 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The show features two guest dancers from India. Hancock said the show features some pieces from previous productions and some new pieces as well.

Hancock has been traveling to India for several years, choreographing and teaching.

“There is a large Indian community in Carmel, and when we’ve done Indian works before we usually draw a large Indian crowd,” Hancock said. “The whole concert is designed for Western and Eastern audiences, so it will be appealing to everybody. It’s colorful and exotic.”

Academy faculty member Christine Thacker said like most of Hancock’s shows, it is athletically demanding for the dancers.

“There are a lot of steps packed into a short period of time for all of the pieces,

and then we add costuming,” Thacker said.

“It starts to alter the movement quality.

There are a lot of bangles, a lot of jewels and scarves. The dresses are heavy.

They’re not designed for dancers, so they have to get used to the weight of the skirt and stay on top of the music.”

Thacker said it includes a duet from “Lagaan,” one of the first Indian-inspired pieces Hancock has done.

“That goes back many years (2001) when we first did that piece,” Thacker said. “What we discovered when we first presented that and continued to present it is that we had a lot of exuberant support from our audiences. They enjoyed the music, the costuming and the movement.”

Prep time: 25 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients: 1 package (2-layer size) white cake mix, 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract, 1/2 teaspoon Blue McCormick Assorted Neon Food Colors & Egg Dye, 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons McCormick Red Food Color, nonstick spray, 1 container (16 ounces) white frosting, 1 cup raspberries, 1/2 cup blueberries Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Prepare cake mix as directed on package, adding vanilla. Transfer 1 1/2 cups batter to small bowl and tint with neon blue food color. Tint remaining batter red by adding cocoa powder and red food color. Pour each

color batter into separate 9-by-5-inch loaf pans sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.

Bake blue-tinted cake 20-25 minutes; red-tinted cake 30-35 minutes. Cool cakes in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans; cool completely. Trim cakes to remove rounded tops and edges. Slice red cake in half horizontally to form two thin layers. Place one layer on platter. Slice remaining red cake layer in half lengthwise. Slice blue cake in half lengthwise. (Blue and red cakes should be same dimensions.)

Frost red cake layer on platter with 1/3 frosting. Top with lengthwise slices of red and blue cake side-by-side. Frost with 1/3 frosting. Repeat cake layer and frosting.

Blueprint for Improvement: Wall removal expands kitchen Commentary by Larry Greene

After solutions: The goal was to design a visually expanded pulland-replace kitchen by opening up the wall to the adjacent spaces and replacing the dated materials.

1. The main solution for opening up the kitchen to the dining room was to remove the nonstructural wall that separated the two spaces. This allowed for a bar-height seating wall in the design.

2. All of the materials were replaced, which included raising and staggering the heights of the wall cabinets, upgrading to granite countertops and adding a second bar-height wall on the living room side to accommodate more cabinetry.

3. Additional touches of detail include a trash pull-out cabinet accessory, a deep doublebowl stainless steel sink, a new kitchen faucet with a pull-out sprayer, an improved lighting plan and an elegant, elongated subway tile backsplash.

Before Background Info: These owners needed a design/build solution for their home in the Spring Arbor neighborhood of Carmel to update and visually expand their kitchen.

Before problems: The existing kitchen footprint was closed off to the adjacent spaces, and the cabinets and other materials were very worn. There also was an unused desk area taking up valuable space. In addition, the owners are both quite tall, so they wanted to take advantage of taller cabinetry to add storage to their kitchen.

Cave 25 and the oldest verses Commentary by Don Knebel A tomb in Jerusalem provides evidence of ancient Jewish burial practices. It also provided what is thought to travel be the oldest example of text found in the Bible.

In 1979, Gabriel Barkay, an Israeli archaeologist, had a hunch that residents of Jerusalem might have buried their dead in caves in an area called Ketef Hinnom, located southwest of the Old City near the Scottish Church of St. Andrew. His hunch paid off, and he uncovered a tomb complex he dated to the seventh century B.C. One tomb included a stone bench, once inside a cave, containing headrests for six bodies. Under the bench Barkay found a chamber, carved in the rock, where bones and grave gifts were deposited after the body had lain on the bench for 12 months. When Barkay looked inside the chamber, he concluded that its contents had been looted long ago. But to keep an annoying 13-year old volunteer on the site occupied, Barkay sent him into the chamber with a hammer. The

young volunteer discovered what turned out to be more than two feet of accumulated bones and more than 1,000 items.

One of the items in what became known as Cave 25 was a tightly rolled sheet of nearly pure silver. When eventually unrolled, the sheet, about 4-inches long by 1-inch wide, was found to be inscribed with ancient Hebrew script spelling out the so-called “Priestly Benediction” recited in Numbers 6:24-26. Another smaller rolled silver sheet contained the same text. Experts have confirmed that these writings were made before 587 B.C., when Jerusalem was conquered by the Babylonians, making them at least 400 years older than the Dead Sea Scrolls, the second-oldest examples of Biblical writings. The silver scrolls, thought to have been used as amulets, are now in Jerusalem’s Israel Museum.
