ZCS goal: Police presence in every school

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A school shooting May 25 in Noblesville shocked central Indiana after a student opened fire in a EDUCATION classroom, striking a teacher and fellow student, who both survived the attack.

Even before the tragedy, school and town officials in Zionsville had been working on a plan to increase the police presence in Zionsville Community Schools.

Mayor Tim Haak stated in a May 27 Facebook post that the goal is to have a police officer or sheriff’s deputy on-site at each

campus during the school day when classes resume in the fall.

“The shooting that happened in Noblesville rocked all of us,” Haak stated in the post.

“Shootings like this don’t typically happen in major cities. They are happening in suburban communities all across the U.S. like Noblesville and Zionsville. I’ve talked with many of you who are understandably scared. I am as well.”

Town of Zionsville spokeswoman Amanda Vela said officials have been discussing the plan since the beginHaak ning of the year. Funding is expected to be discussed at the June 18 town council meeting.

Rebecca Coffman, ZCS chief operations officer, said ZCS administrators have been meet-

ing with law enforcement officials and plan to release details of the arrangement soon.

INDOT is planning interchange upgrades along I-65 in Whitestown, the state’s fastest-growing community.

INDOT Proposals include constructing a diverging diamond interchange at State Road 267 and I-65, a new interchange at CR 550 S and I-65 and ramp widening at Exit 130.

The plans were met with positive feedback at a May 22 INDOT public meeting in Whitestown.

“People in the audience were very happy about the reconfiguration at Exit 133 (State Road 267), especially,” said Tanya Sumner, Whitestown director of public relations. “It’s badly needed and will really help prevent those backups we see now at 267. Adding a stoplight at Indianapolis Road is also something residents have been asking for, so all (are) very positive moves.”

The work, which will be paid for with federal funding, is the result of an interchange capacity analysis, according to Debbie Calder, communications director for INDOT’s Crawfordsville district.

“The new interchange at CR 550 diverts a significant amount of traffic from not only the SR 267 interchange, but also the Whitestown Parkway interchange,” Calder said. “This diversion improves the operations of the corridor so much that a less expensive interchange at SR 267 can be constructed and still provide the desired

Sumner said projects such as these are “huge” for Whitestown.

“We’re very grateful to INDOT for proactively planning for future growth and getting ahead of any potential traffic problems,” Sumner said. “These projects will greatly speed up the flow of traffic, especially from our industrial areas.”

If the project is approved, INDOT expects to work on right-of-way acquisition in 2019.

Construction on the $40 million interchange project is projected to begin in 2020 and is expected to take two years to complete.

Calder said the CR 550 S interchange, the northern (new) SR 267 bridge and some of the SR 267 interchange work can be done with minimal traffic impact. She also said there is the potential to make the CR 550 S interchange operational prior to the reconstruction of existing portions of the SR 267 interchange.

HAND extends reach to Boone Co.

HAND – Hamilton County Area Neighborhood Development – is investing more than $2 million in Lebanon in Boone County to acquire 17 duplexes, which will be renovated and transformed into affordable apartments. The rental community will have 33 leasable units on two cul-desacs, along with an office for property manager Mark III and a community room open to all residents.

HAND, a nonprofit that addresses housing needs of low- and moderate-income people, families and senior citizens in Indianapolis suburbs, is branching into Boone County to serve a need, according to HAND’s Outreach and Fundraising Manager Andrea Muirragui Davis.

“We know that other suburban communities are facing the same challenges as Hamilton County,” Muirragui Davis said.

“Housing costs are rising as the population grows, making it difficult for folks with

modest incomes to afford to live in those communities.”

The Lebanon duplexes, called Hickory Commons, were built in the 1950s. The renovation project, with funding from the Indiana Housing Community Development Authority and a private loan from Lake City Bank, is expected to take about a year and will not displace residents.

Because of its proximity to Hamilton County and the rising need for affordable housing options, Boone County was a natural place for HAND to extend its reach, Muirragui Davis said.

“Boone County also is experiencing the rapid population growth that drives housing costs up, so it has similar challenges (to Hamilton County),” Muirragui Davis said.

HAND’s Boone County project likely won’t be its last outside of Hamilton County.

Following nearly five decades, the I65/I-70 inner loop in Indianapolis is wearing down.

After ROAD CONSTRUCTION reviewing plans to replace the infrastructure, some downtown business people are concerned with INDOT’s proposal to erect 25-to-30 foot walls around most of downtown to widen lanes on the north, east and south side of downtown. Many of them who formed the Rethink 65-70 Coalition are convinced this would create a devastating effect on commerce and livability.

Paul Knapp, a steering committee member of the Rethink 65/70 Coalition who commutes from the Zionsville area to downKnapp town Indianapolis for work, said the organization wants INDOT to use good old Hoosier common sense.

“We do not dispute that the interstates are nearing the end of their expected life,” Knapp said.

“We also understand that some of the bridges and road decks need immediate attention. So, on that level, we call on INDOT to immediately address the near-term maintenance and safety issues which will extend the life of the interstates for three to five years. But this stabilization work should not go outside the current lanes of the interstates.”

INDOT Strategic Communications Director Scott Manning said safety concerns and aging infrastructure are driving the new plans. “(The I-65/70 north split) has two times the accident rate compared to other urban interstates around the state,” Manning said.

“We’ve seen just shy of 1,500 crashes there in the last five years.”

Manning said INDOT has been meeting with the public and interested groups — including the Rethink 65/70 Coalition — to refine plans for the project.

“What is unique about the Rethink group and this specific project is they brought some really high-level concepts to the table as it relates to the entire downtown system,” Manning said. “It may be worth a collection of civic-minded groups taking a look at further and seeing if they are worth exploring in greater detail, taking a

greater look at how we possibly would fund them, whether they would be constructible, whether the engineering is feasible.”

Knapp, CEO of downtown Indianapolisbased Young & Laramore Advertising, said his group sees the need to reconstruct the downtown interstates as a major economic development opportunity for central Indiana.

“This project will define the core of the state’s biggest economic engine for the next 50 years,” Knapp said. “We don’t want INDOT to simply double down on a highway idea from 50 years ago, one that divided and destroyed so much of downtown and the downtown economy.

“This project holds the possibility to transform the capital city into a Mecca for the 21st century with businesses wanting to relocate or stay in a thriving urban center.”

Knapp said the Rethink 65/70 Coalition is not proposing any specific plan at this time but sees so much opportunity that it is calling on the governor to recognize this matter is bigger than traffic and INDOT’s scope of responsibilities.

“We need the governor to convene a regional team to study and develop a plan to truly get us to the next level in how we handle highway traffic in the state’s urban core,” he said.

Knapp said the Rethink 65/70 Coalition is made up of a wide array of people and organizations, including downtown business owners, civic organizations and more than 28 neighborhood associations. Knapp said more organizations are asking to join the group every day.

“It could shave a minute or so off of a normal dispatch,” Whitestown Fire Chief Josh Westrich said.

“It boils down straight to response time,” Westrich said. “If we’re able to get our resources out on the streets even faster than we are now, it’s a great benefit to the entire county.”

Westrich said he wants to have the system implemented by September.

The cost of the upgrade is $174,555, which will be split amongst Boone County agencies.

You know what the phrase “post haste” means. Everybody does. It means in a hurry, urgent, chop-chop!

I remember reading the PLAIN TALK storybook “Pollyanna” to my kids and stumping them with the sentence, “Didn’t she send me post haste with an umbrella ‘cause she saw a cloud in the sky?”

“What does post haste mean, Daddy?” my eldest daughter asked. We spent the next half-hour looking the phrase up in the dictionary and using it in assorted sentences.

It turns out I was right about the meaning, but I hadn’t a clue where it came from or how old it was. Rewind to the 16th century, back to 1530 when an anonymous writer described an official on horseback, “The horse in a foam and the bearer smoking like a boiler with a post haste letter.”

Apparently, urgent mail was stamped “Post Haste” in olden times. Even a hundred years later, John Motley wrote in his “History of the Netherlands” that two letters were sent post haste to Spain.

Airmail” not so many years ago. We had Airmail stamps and special red, white and blue postage-paid envelopes that would wing our messages from here to there post haste. And if you really wanted to show off, you could get envelopes that said, “Par Avion.”

Other phrases come to mind. An “old chestnut” is a tired, worn-out story that had its origins in an 1800s melodrama play during which a player describes something falling from a tree. Another actor interrupts, claiming it was the same “old chestnut you told us about 27 times.”

One of my favorites is “a fate worse than death.” This cliché was coined by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his story of “Tarzan” when he described how Jane Porter was thrown over his shoulder and carried off to “a fate worse than death.”

Actually, I grew up on “Tarzan” movies and always thought Jane looked pretty pleased with herself living in a tree. I wondered about Cheetah the chimpanzee, though. Sometimes he didn’t look all that happy.

The post haste business got out of hand with my kids, though. For days after I read Pollyanna to them, everything was post haste.

“OK, girls, take the dishes out to the kitchen.”

“Should we do it post haste, Daddy?”

“Time for bed, kids.”

“Can we go to bed post haste?”

“Do your homework.”

“Post haste, Daddy!”

“Enough with the post haste already,” I finally said after the gazillionth time.

“We’re quitting, Daddy,” my eldest said.

As they walked away, I heard my youngest whisper, “post haste.”

Natural gardens focus of tour

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com This year’s Gardens of Zionsville tour will feature seven properties with a naturalistic feel, a change from SULLIVANMUNCE the formal gardens showcased in previous years. Some are rural and some are in the village, but all have a country-garden feel, according to event organizer Candace Ulmer, a member of the SullivanMunce Cultural Center Guild.

Being part of the garden tour was a bucket list item for Sandra Fontaine. Her cottage garden, dubbed “Le jardin secret,” has been a work in progress since her family purchased a 5-acre property 30 years ago. When clearing the bramble in the yard, she discovered a pond underneath, now surrounded by irises.

“The yard has evolved,” she said. “We fell in love with this property. It’s very hidden.”

One of the first homesteads in Zionsville, the property has original fruit trees and bushes.

also recognized the positive impact SullivanMunce had on her daughter’s life. Lauren Phillips, now an artist, began taking classes at the art center when the family first moved to Zionsville.

The tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23 beginning at SullivanMunce. It will have a Garden Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the museum property.

Boy Scouts building veterans memorial

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com Three Zionsville teens from Boy Scout Troop 358 are raising money for a Veterans Memorial to be built at WHITESTOWN the Whitestown Municipal Complex. The trio is working on the project as part of attaining their Eagle Scout rank.

The Zionsville Community High School students, Chris Luciana, a sophomore, and Luke Revercomb and Lucas Pishon, both juniors, are working on separate Eagle Scout projects that will culminate in the completion of the memorial that would have cost the town approximately $30,000 to build.

The teens got the idea after talking with the Whitestown Veterans Committee and town officials who spoke of their desire to update the front of the municipal complex with a possible veterans theme.

“I wanted to make something that would last for a long time and that would benefit the community as a whole,” said Pishon, whose part of the project is the five limestone memorial pillars featuring a plaque with the insignias of each military branch at a cost of $6,200.

“We all picked a part of the project that sounded feasible to us,” Revercomb said. “I have some experience doing some of these things from helping my dad, so it fit pretty well.”

“It’s really impressive (that) these high schoolers have such a lofty goal and have chosen to honor local veterans with their Eagle Scout project,” said Tanya Sumner, director of public relations for the Town of Whitestown.

Hoosier Village honors veterans

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Hoosier Village Retirement Community held a Memorial Day ceremony May 24 and added 25 engraved bricks to MILITARY its veterans garden.

A year ago, Hoosier Village dedicated the garden, which is in the center of the community. Rob May, the Hoosier Village chaplain and a retired U.S. Navy chaplain, led the ceremony.

“We started off with 129 names on those first batch of bricks, and this is now the third time we are gathering to honor veterans to add more bricks,” May said. “Every time we have the opportunity to add more bricks is a special day.”

Out of the 25 bricks added to the garden wall, 21 bear the names of living veterans who are part of the Hoosier Village community. Of those, five served in World War II, 10 served in Korea and 12 served in Vietnam.

A few served in multiple wars. Of the 25 names, 14 are from the Army, four from the Navy, three from the Marines and four are

from the Air Force.

As May announced each name, the veterans received a medal and small American flag. Following the reading of the names, a video honoring all veterans in attendance with a playing of all the service songs was shown. A video clip of the veterans garden dedication also was shown.

Women with a mission SullivanMunce prepares for the future as it preserves the past

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com When Iva Etta Sullivan died 52 years ago in Washington, D.C., she surprised Zionsville by leaving her estate to the town to create a foundation with a goal COVER STORY to study and preserve Indiana and local history. She stipulated that it be named the Patrick Henry Sullivan Foundation in honor of her greatgrandfather, an early Boone County settler and veteran of the War of 1812.

“It was something that was a great gift,” said Sam Fix, who served on the foundation’s board before the resulting Patrick Henry Sullivan Museum even had a building. “It was an exciting time in the development of it.”

Now 45 years after opening, the museum has transformed into a combination art center, genealogy library, welcome center, gift shop and catalog of the town’s history.

“It just kept growing and growing,” said Fix, who served on the board for 22 years and was president for nine years.

The different additions in different buildings weren’t always cohesive. Executive Director Cynthia Young, who joined the museum in 2007 as an art instructor, didn’t initially realize that all of the pieces were part of one entity.

“I really wanted to make SullivanMunce Cultural Center more recognizable,” she said.

Physically connecting the museum and the Munce Art Center next door was the first step, but in the past decade she has focused on raising awareness for what the organization does.

A September 2017 formal gala on a local farm kicked off the 45th anniversary. This year will involve moving the cultural center forward with technology, expansion and classes.

“I wanted to take a step back and really focus on our mission and why we’re here and to really concentrate on our programming and what we’re offering to the community,” Young said.

The cultural center is slowly rolling out an online catalog of the museum’s artifacts and materials, partly to preserve paper items and others delicate pieces. The biggest challenge is finding volunteers to photograph, scan and label items.

The catalog is created from museum-specific software that was already gathering membership information.

“We had the software for a while but it wasn’t being utilized like it could,” Young said. “It was exciting when we found that out.”

future thanks to an affiliation with Family Search.

“They’ll do it for their purposes,” Young said. “We have some unique things that they probably don’t have.”

Donated personal family histories and Boone County information are specific to SullivanMunce and not available elsewhere.

Recently, the museum established an endowment through the Community Foundation of Boone County and will focus on volunteer staff development.

Moving forward, Young expects more collaboration with businesses and other organzations in the community. Two goals for the near future are collecting public input for new programs and creating a new strategic plan.

A women’s guild established in 1972 to support the museum still continues today. It raises money through its annual garden tour, a Victorian tea and bake sales. Initially, guild members served as museum guides.

One of the founding guild members, local artist Edie Mahaney, eventually became the museum’s founding director.

Mahaney, who died last fall, established the Munce Art Center and initiated the First Come, First Hung exhibit, which affords amateur artists the opportunity to see their work displayed in a gallery.

“Edie Mahaney played a monstrous part in the museum,” Fix said. “We’ve lost a lot of great people who had a lot to do with the museum.”

The Patrick Henry Sullivan Museum may have been named for a male, but it’s thanks to the generosity of females that the SullivanMunce Cultural Center has become integral to Zionsville.

Iva Etta Sullivan was an 1896 graduate of Zionsville High school who became a librarian and moved to California to assist with historical research for Cecil B. DeMille. She then moved to Washington, D.C. until she died. Although she reportedly never returned to Zionsville, she evidently had an affinity for the town, bequeathing it $434,155, the equivalent of $2.9 million today.

In 1981, The Munce Arts Center opened at the bequest of former artist Mary Elizabeth Munce, who grew up in the area. Nine years later, the Moore/ Brunes Memorial Addition was built to house a rural family life exhibit thanks to a donation by Sparkle Moore Furnas and her family. It has since become the Moore/Brunes Gallery for art exhibition. The buildings were connected in 2010, partly through a donation in memory of Cynthia Yeo, a Zionsville artist who lived a few doors down and was active in the art center. In 2014, the Zionsville Welcome Center, after losing its downtown location, became incorporated.

The initial bequest from Iva Etta Sullivan’s estate took several years and a bit of debate to determine where to build the foundation’s headquarters. The Hussey Memorial Library, then on West Hawthorne Street, owned two adjacent lots left by Lora Hussey when she donated her home to create a library. The new board of the Patrick Henry Sullivan Foundation eventually came to an agreement to purchase the lots from the town and broke ground Nov. 21, 1971.

The cost was estimated at nearly $135,000 to build the museum, with the remainder of the estate used for purchasing artifacts and establishing a trust for upkeep.

The Patrick Henry Sullivan Museum was dedicated June 10, 1973, with former Indiana Gov. Roger D. Branigan presiding over the festivities and reportedly calling it “a beautiful jewel box” of Zionsville.

Yet, new people continue to be involved. More than 200 volunteers help the museum with daily operations and various events, such as the October GhostWalk, a Gardens of Zionsville tour and garden party, art exhibits, summer camps, third-grade history tours and a biannual quilt show.

Young is the only staff member paid by the foundation.

In the past decade, Young has welcomed groups to meet at the SullivanMunce if they share the organization’s mission celebrating art, history and genealogy. None has a formal place to meet, such as The Calligraphy Guild of Indiana, Zionsville Historical Society, Zionsville Drumming Group and Psi Iota Xi, among dozens of others.

“We’re more community-oriented instead of feeling like a separate entity,” she said.

Commentary by Terry Anker It is always something. At least, so goes the aphorism. Each new day presents its own challenges. And, each improvement brings with it requisite unintended consequences. On the tightrope walk of life, balance is achievable only for an instant. Even as we find ourselves stable and in perfect and sublime equilibrium, our weight shifts and we strain to find a steady footing again.

On the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the urban legend goes, one can stand an egg on its end. It is true but not then alone. Alas, as much as we might imagine that the shifting balance of Earth’s gravity or the ideal cleaving of hours of dark and light to bring magic to the ovoid breakfast food, we, with a steady hand and sufficient patience, can stand an egg on end any day. As the chicken dutifully produced the shell, calcium deposits form unevenly, creating a granularity to the surface that leads to the phenomena. Undisturbed, it will stand on end, well, endlessly.

So, why can’t we settle in, resting on our own lifelong-accumulation of barnacles, to an uninterrupted run of balance? Don’t we deserve the chance to stand on end, escaping the otherwise prone nature of existence? Either external or internal, we find it difficult to maintain our stance. We wobble, stumble and sway, returning again and again to the steady state of our natures, frustrated by our inability to hold on to flawless symmetry.

Yet, we humans are very much animate. And while it may keep us in the constant pursuit of balance, it also enables us to adroitly dispense with shifting circumstance, prospective harm and disrupting environments. Should we simply embrace the truism that it is always something? Happily, it might be something good.

A lot of people stepped up and helped in a lot of ways to make this major event a tremendous success. There is an enormous amount of work and preparations that must take place in order to get this annual food drive accomplished in each of our cities.

I am sure they are all very much appreciative of our efforts at our local food pantries and churches. The generosity of our local communities is amazing, to say the least. This annual food drive replenishes local food pantries in our communities, and we should all take pride in helping the less fortunate in our communities we serve.

Each city collected the following: • Carmel — 21,892 pounds to Open Doors Food Pantry • Noblesville — 18,342 pounds to Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank • Fishers — 17,905 pounds to Delaware Township Trustee’s Office and Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank • Westfield — 9,550 pounds to Open Doors Food Pantry • Zionsville — 6,278 pounds to Zionsville Presbyterian Church This was the 26th year of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which is the nation’s largest, one-day food drive. The amount of good all the donated food will do in our local communities is measured by the number of people that will be helped greatly over the next several months. I’m getting old, people. And clumsy.

Here’s what happened: After work on Tuesday I HUMOR checked in with all of my kiddos, made a carpool run to dance, then prepped for a jog. I used the bathroom four times, dug up some sunglasses and set off into the rush hour traffic with a vague 6-mile route in mind.

Almost to the half-way point and a much-needed port-a-pot, I switched from the sidewalk to the road for smoother and more asphalt-ey ground. As an oncoming car approached, I drifted slightly to the left but remained on the road.

Briefly. Within the next three seconds, I’d rolled my ankle off the edge, broken my fall with my right knee and hands, and began dragging my wounded body out of harm’s way. The car that I had sought to avoid drove right on by without so much as a mild slowdown. I couldn’t believe it!

Stunned, embarrassed and fairly certain I’d broken something, I sat up and assessed my situation. I was almost 3 miles from home, bleeding and hurting, and I didn’t have my phone (I’ve already been reprimanded by the kids and my husband Doo about that last tidbit, so zip it). I stood up and began to walk, and thanks to the adrenaline and shock, discovered I could jog. Momma had to get home! And I made it in record time because I’m awesome.

My ankle is still swollen and my scabby knee looks like an 8-year old’s, but I learned a valuable lesson. My balance and judgment are not what they used to be. I’m switching to swimming, Peace out.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie A Wisconsin man just ate his 30,000th Big Mac (more than one a day, for 50 years).

Donald Gorsky lives in MilwauHUMOR kee, which is unbelievable. No, not the Milwaukee part — the living part. Think about it: 30,000 Big Macs is the equivalent of 800 heads of lettuce, 523 pounds of cheese, 100 gallons of special sauce, 14 heads of cattle and several million sesame seeds. And he says he never gets sick. He has no known health issues, but he has surely created some unknown ones.

Every doctor in the nation would have predicted that Gorsky should have been in his McCoffin by now, but instead, a newspaper article about his feat claims he is healthy, robust and has actually fathered genetically viable children. And he broke four other records as well: • Person with the most clothing with special sauce stains.

• The only person to order the exact same thing at the same McDonald’s for 50 years and get the wrong order 27,000 times.

• First person to go on Weight Watchers and run out of points by 8:30 a.m. ev-

ery day.

By the way, Gorsky also eats at White Castle regularly, but he never mentions it because he knows it’s a disgusting habit and he’s trying to quit.

I have set some records myself. For example, every morning for 25 years, I have checked my cellphone for messages 12 or more times. This is a world record that I hold. Well, OK, I don’t actually hold that record: I am tied with 4 billion other people.

For my entire adult life, I have started my to-do list with the word EXERCISE followed by a little O that I fill in when I have completed that chore. I have never missed a day. Not actually exercising — just coloring in that little O. By the way, when Gorsky was a prison guard in Milwaukee, the inmates rioted because they had been served Salisbury steak three days in a row.

Needless to say, he wasn’t very sympathetic.

Common running injuries Commentary by Dr. Joseph Hui Common overuse injuries can affect the hip, knee, lower leg, foot and ankle for runners.

SPORTS MEDICINE Injuries to the hip typically can be separated by location: groin, anterior, lateral and posterior. Injuries to the groin may include labral tears or stress injuries to the femoral neck located near the top of the femur bone. Physical therapy and a period of relative rest can be helpful.

Anterior or frontal hip pain may be associated with iliopsoas tendinopathy or strain, while lateral or side hip pain is typically associated with gluteus medius tendinopathy. For issues related to tendinopathy, eccentric strengthening and tool-assisted soft tissue massages are often helpful. Posterior hip pain is often due to a pinched nerve, either due to piriformis syndrome or from sciatica. Pain from this issue can be alleviated with core strengthening exercises.

Injuries to the knee also can be separated by location: kneecap, joint line, lateral and posterior knee. By far the most common cause of knee pain from running is from improper knee biomechanics resulting in pain around the kneecap, which is called patellofemoral pain syndrome. Orthotics,

strengthening of the knee and hip and cross training, such as biking or swimming, are good ways to treat this issue. The condition is more common in women and can occur after a hiatus from activity such as during pregnancy.

Lateral knee pain can be caused by a tight IT band, which is attached to the knee and helps stabilize and move the joint. Rolling on a soft foam roller, also known as a OPTP roller, and other forms of soft tissue massages can help stretch and loosen the connective tissue to reduce the pain. Posterior knee pain often results from hamstring tendinopathy. As mentioned earlier about tendinopathy, eccentric strengthening and tool-assisted soft tissue massages can be helpful in this case.

Lastly, for runners older than 40, one common reason for knee pain at the joint line is due to wearing away of the cartilage, also known as arthritis. Transitioning to low impact running and knee and hip strengthening can help treat arthritic pain.

Stevia for Lyme disease — A recent study hints that Stevia may be an effective treatment for Lyme disease. Stevia is a plantbased sweetener, often used as a healthier alternative to sugar. Lab results show that Stevia did kill off Lyme bacteria and there are some anecdotal reports of it working.

It’s too soon to know for sure, but Stevia is considered safe, so it can’t hurt to add it to your diet.

It’s “serendipitous” that 120WaterAudit’s fulfillment has taken over the building at the corner of Main and First Street, according to co-founder and CEO EXPANSION Megan Glover.

“We were in crunch time where we didn’t have a plan B,” she said. “We were literally prepping to have fulfillment come back into my basement.”

The fulfillment center is at 390 South Main St. in a building owned by the town of Zionsville and recently vacated by another local startup, Boosterville. Town officials previously announced they will allow growing companies to utilize the empty building until the property is sold.

Newly added ergonomic equipment helps 120WaterAudit’s dedicated fulfillment staff ship up to 7,000 water-testing packages each week.

The entire company, including fulfillment, had been utilizing a large room in zWORKS where the company was founded. As staff grew, fulfillment storage was spread over multiple locations, requiring the team to often make multiple daily trips to ensure they had enough product. Recently, Glover learned it had to relinquish the zWORKS space for another startup.

Fishers Imports coming soon

Construction at a second location at 96th Street and Michigan Road, near Zionsville, is likely to begin in August EXPANSION and open in early 2019.

Peyman Rashid, who co-owns the luxury pre-owned dealership with his brother Amir, said they are working with a branding company to decide the name of the new location.

The 4.5-acre dealership will include car sales, service and parts in one location.

“We are going to be almost tripling our inventory,” said Rashid, the chief executive officer. “For us to be able to take over and assist the west Carmel, Zionsville and north Eagle Creek market is really a big deal. We have really dominated the east Carmel and Fishers area.”

The new location will focus mainly on BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi.

With the new location, Fishers Imports plans to become the first Indy-area dealer to introduce a membership model that will assist customers with their ongoing vehicle service, along with providing customers a 2-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty to

protect against any major vehicle expense.

Rashid and his brother live in Fishers, but he said one of them likely will move to Zionsville.

Rashid said the new locations will likely have more than 400 luxury vehicles and create at least 30 new sales and management jobs. The average price range is $25,000 to $30,000 for the cars.

“It’s perfect for the 25- to 50-year-old buyers who don’t want to spend the money to buy a brand new car but want a newer, nicer car for a decent price,” Rashid said.

Founded in 2011, Rashid said his company has sold more than 6,000 cars.

Carmel Community Players perform rare Mark Twain play ‘Is He Dead?’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Mark Twain’s play took more than a century to come to stage.

“It had been buried in his THEATER manuscripts for 100 years, which is really cool,” Mark Tumey said. “A modern-day playwright took the play and condensed it from three acts and 35 people to two acts and 11 people.”

Twain wrote the play, “Is He Dead?” in 1898. Twain scholar Shelly Fisher Fishkel had it published in 2003. David Ives adapted the play for its debut in 2007.

It will make its Indiana premiere as a Carmel Community Players production June 8 to 24 at the 150-seat Studio Theater 37 at Ji-Eun Lee Music Academy in Fishers.

Tumey, a Noblesville resident, suggested the play to CCP and was asked by CCP to direct it. It is the first show he has directed for CCP. Tumey acted in the production in a theater in Gilbert, Ariz., 18 months ago.

“I thought it was such a great show and I wanted to bring it to central Indiana,” he said.

The play focuses on Jean-Francois Millet, a starving artist in Paris.

“The idea is you don’t make any money as an artist until you’re dead, which brings the whole concept of we’ll fake the death, so Millet feigns his death,” Tumey said. “Pictures start to rise in value. His widowed sister comes into the picture to settle his estate — that is Millet, crossdressed as a sister. Most of the play focuses on Millet as the sister, fighting off two male suitors in the process. At the end, Millet comes back as himself. It’s a slapstick comedy, borderline farce. There is an energetic cast of 11 people, seven male and four females.”

Brownsburg resident Jaime Johnson is performing the role of Millet and his sister.

“The dual roles of artist and widowed sister are quite a bit different,” Johnson said. “The changes in the character depend on who is in the room. If there is

someone in on the joke, then it’s one way, regardless of the dress. My pupils are the ones that are in on it. My girlfriend doesn’t know anything.”

Although Johnson has acted for 20 years in central Indiana, this is his first appearance with CCP. “It’s not often you find something that has been buried for 100 years and you get to put a nice modern spin on it,” said Johnson, who typically does comedies. “It’s pretty neat, the lineage on it. Who gets to do Twain?”

Larry Adams, a CCP regular who lives in the Brownsburg area, plays Bastien Andre.

“I have one of the most fun parts because the villain is always fun to play,” Adams said. “I get to chew the scenery quite a bit with this. I can’t say it’s the most challenging role I’ve had because it is so much fun to do.”

Morgan Morton, a Broad Ripple resident, portrays Marie in her first CCP appearance.

“I wanted to work for CCP,” Morton said. “I auditioned before and didn’t get it. I wanted a chance to work with this theater company and meet some people.

I wanted to do a comedy. I tried out, and here I am.”

Morton was a theater major at Taylor University.

“She’s very delightful,” Morton said of her character. “She is just the right amount of naïve. She’s very spunky and has a lot of drive because of her love for Millet.”

The Zionsville Community THEATER High School sophomore plays Ren McCormack in Christian Youth Theater’s production of “Footloose” June 8 to 10 at Marian University. McCormack moves from Chicago to a small Texas town, where dancing and rock music have been banned.

“I watched the movie a couple of times to get the bad boy sense feel,” Elefante said.

“I’m not really like that in real life, so I had to prep for it. It’s something I’ve never done before, so it’s kind of exciting and new. I’m always playing the funny character in the shows. There are bits of humor, but it’s more serious.”

White-hot summer wine Commentary by Elizabeth Morse I enjoy unique wine varietals, and there are so many great whites out there. I thought I’d share some WINEderlust of my current favorites as we jump into the heat of summer. These are all great to enjoy on your patio, or by the pool, but I’ll also give you tips with each on how to pair them with food in case you’re curious.

First up is a Grüner Veltliner, an Austrian white that is typically enjoyed as a young wine. A great value is Hugl Grüner Veltliner: A big, litre-size bottle will only set you back about $15. It’s fresh with flavors of citrus, stonefruit, flowers and the signature white pepper. A great match for grilled artichokes, asparagus or spicy Asian dishes.

My next pick, Paco & Lola Albariño, is ideal for pairing with aged cheeses, sushi, chicken salad or grilled fish. Alabriño hails from the Rias Baixas region in Spain and is a crisp wine that’s

perfect for summer. It’s gives a flowery, tropicaI impression on the nose but you’ll enjoy the lean flavors of citrus and green apple in your mouth. The bottle ($19) boasts a cunning black-and-white, polka dot label that creates a stylish focal point on your table.

Finally, I’ll suggest a dry, Hungarian wine called Furmint. Furmint comes from the famed Tokaj region of Hungary and is an indigenous grape (not the dessert Furmint, which is very sweet). I’m loving the 2015 from Patricius Tokaj right now, ($14). A bright wine with a perfumed nose, driven by minerals with ripe peach and a little almond. It’s tangy and a great accompaniment to seafood, chicken and pork.

Blueprint for Improvement: West Carmel outdoor living space Commentary by Larry Greene

Background Info: This home in the Woods of Williams Creek neighborhood in Carmel still is considered fairly new, having been built in the early 2000s. Although the interior was mostly up to date, the exterior was in need of updates.

The goal was to give the owners an outdoor living space they could enjoy while also making it easier to maintain.

1. The biggest transformation came from replacing all the wood decking with composite decking. Not only does composite decking look and feel like real wood, but the homeowners won’t have to worry about staining or painting their deck every few years.

2. Another beautiful addition to the deck is the lighting system that was incorporated into the composite.

3. A stainless steel cable railing also was incorporated along the perimeter of the deck, not only enhancing safety but also creating a more modern design.

4. The screened-in porch was updated by adding a French door, flooring to match the decking and a higher ceiling, making the space appear larger.

Believe it or not, correcting other people’s grammar isn’t going to win you any friends.

And you also might GRAMMAR GUY have trouble keeping the friends you do have if you follow them around with your figurative red pen poised in conversations.

I’ll admit, I fell prey to the low-hanging fruit of correcting a friend’s grammar the other night. My red ink came out almost as a grammatical reflex. For the record, I was correct. Also, for the record, I’m sorry I did it. Unless someone gives you explicit permission to correct their grammar during conversations, just don’t do it. You’ll look like a jerk. It’s almost as bad as picking your friend’s nose.

I chose to drop the grammar hammer over the words obtain and attain, two word cousins people often get confused. Let’s learn about these two words and how to use them correctly. Attain is a verb that means to achieve or accomplish reaching a goal. Obtain is a verb that means to acquire or get something. Based on these two definitions, the words seem strikingly similar.

When it comes to attain, think about

achieving or accomplishing something. This is usually something that isn’t physical, like enlightenment or wisdom. You can attain a rank in the Army, which isn’t necessarily something you can physically hold. When you obtain something, it’s usually a physical object, like car keys or a pet octopus.

The fine line between attain and obtain is found with things such as degrees and diplomas. You attain a degree (something you achieve or accomplish). You obtain a diploma (the physical piece of paper). In “National Treasure,” Nicolas Cage’s character obtains the Declaration of Independence. By doing so, he attained criminal status.

If you choose to correct people’s grammar publicly, you risk attaining a reputation for being someone nobody wants to be around. You might even obtain a black eye. So, put the red pens away; people aren’t friends with you because they like it when someone points out their grammar discrepancies.

The church of Jesus’ grandmother Commentary by Don Knebel A magnificently well-preserved Crusader church in Jerusalem honors Saint Anne.

Although not mentioned TRAVEL anywhere in the Bible, both Christian and Islamic traditions recognize her as the grandmother of Jesus.

The New Testament is silent about the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In about 145 A.D., the “Infancy Gospel of James” first identified Mary’s mother as the longbarren Anna and her father as the wealthy Joaquin. By the fourth century, Church authorities had determined that this popular book was spurious. However, the story about Anna and Joaquin had gained a life of its own among the faithful. According to one popular version of the story, Mary was born to Anna in a Jerusalem cave. The Quran, which devotes an entire chapter to Mary, also suggests Mary’s mother was barren. Islamic tradition gives her the name Hannah. By the eighth century, the grandmother of Jesus was being venerated as Saint Anne.

After the Crusaders captured Jerusalem from the Muslims in 1099, they discovered

the ruins of a fifth-century church just north of the Temple Mount, the enormous platform on which the Jewish Temple stood until destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. Somehow concluding that the ruins marked the birthplace of Mary, between 1131 and 1138 the Crusaders erected on the site a Romanesque-style stone church dedicated to Saint Anne. The church included interior steps leading to the cave where they believed Mary was born. When Saladin recaptured Jerusalem in 1187, he spared Anne’s church, using it to house an important Islamic center of learning.

Today, the Church of Saint Anne, in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem, is owned by the French government. The church is famous for its extraordinary acoustics, said to be perfect for Gregorian chants. Visiting groups are encouraged to hear for themselves by singing (or chanting) inside.
