Zionsville Princess becomes Queen

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Shivani Bajpai had absolutely no idea she had a shot at being named the 500 Festival Queen.

500 festival The Zionsville resident was chosen from the 33 Festival Princesses at the 500 Festival Breakfast at the Brickyard May 20 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“I often joke and say — ‘if I had known, I would have at least painted my nails’,” Bajpai said. “I did not even pay attention to what the Queen would do after being announced. I thought, surely it won’t be me. This is because I have spent the past few months with some of the most accomplished, kind-hearted and genuine women I have ever met. I do not consider myself any more qualified than any one of them; those ladies never cease to amaze me. They say being Queen means representing the values of the Princess Program in addition to the 500 Festival — so if I have been chosen to represent women as wonderful as they are, I am truly honored.”

Each 500 Festival Princess receives a $1,000 scholarship. As Festival Queen, Bajpai receives an additional $1,500 scholarship from the 500 Festival. She will continue to represent the 500 Festival at events throughout the year.

Although she resides in Zionsville, Bajpai lives in the Carmel Clay Schools district and graduated from Carmel High School in 2013.

She graduated from IUPUI in May with a degree in biology and minors in Spanish and chemistry. She plans to attend medical school.

Bajpai said the most memorable part of the 500 Festival Princess Program is the service work they do.

she said. “We are vibrant and innovative ambassadors of the 500 Festival who have really tried to reach every community in a positive way.”

Bajpai said she is proud the Princesses have been a part of more than 300 outreaches since they began this program in mid-February.

“I think the education programs that we help with are particularly interesting,” Bajpai said. “I am pursuing a career in the STEM fields myself, so to see that we are building a bridge between the track and Indiana classrooms is great to see. There are physics and logistics and critical thinking behind every car that leaves the garage. To see wheels turning in the kids’ minds is so entertaining to me. You never know what may inspire them.”

Accident with injuries — On May 19 at 7 p.m., members of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the intersection of US 421 and Taylor Avenue for an accident, where they discovered a collision between a Mazda SUV and a Honda motorcycle.

The driver and passenger in the vehicle were treated and released at the scene.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. At this time, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.

Art contest winners named — The 2017 Congressional Art Competition has announced that Zionsville resident Julie McMichen, a junior at Zionsville High School, received an honorable mention for her piece titled Lion of Many Nations. U.S. Rep. Susan Brooks will display this piece along with other winners in her district offices in Carmel and Anderson.

The $889,000 roundabout is being partially funded by a $1 million matching grant from INDOT. The grant also is expected to fund the reconstruction and rehabilitation of several roads in Zionsville.

The first roundabout at the intersection of Bloor and Ford roads underwent the bulk of its construction during the summer of 2015 to minimize the impact on schools and bus routes. A roundabout at US-421 and SR 32 was built in 2015, but then closed for rebuilding later that year, and again in 2016.

It’s summer reading time at the HusseyMayfield Memorial Public Library, with prizes availlibrary able for participating teens and youth and new opportunities for adults to give back to the community when they finish reading their first book.

Hilbert Registered adults can select a free book at the library after logging their first book read, then they can choose to have the library donate $1 on their behalf to the Humane Society for Boone County or to the library’s Teen Community Service Club.

The HSBC donation, funded by an anonymous donor, will go toward vaccines for county pets. The Friends of the Library contributed money for teens to add a cutting garden to the library grounds.

Librarian Orty Ortwein said there are usually 400 to 500 adult participants for summer reading and he hopes the new features will encourage more people to participate. For every book read, adults earn entries for gift cards from local businesses.

“A lot of times people think it’s just for the kids,” HMMPL Marketing Director Virginia Hilbert said. “It’s beneficial for adults to get involved, too, and to discover some new titles or genres they haven’t tried before.

We hope that all ages participate together.”

Also new this year, the library has partnered with online resource Beanstack, which tracks books read for the programs.

It also makes reading recommendations based upon previously read books or preferred genres.

Ice cream socials the evening of June 8 and the morning of June 9 are open to anyone who has registered for summer reading and kicks off two months of free events and programs for all ages. Unique programs include SAT preparation, Minecraft, travel, cooking lessons and live music.

Work begins on I-65 — INDOT has begun work on a $47.2 million project to patch and resurface I-65 between Lebanon and Lafayette from the 141 to the 165 mile marker. Nighttime lane closures will vary between the hours of 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. The project is planned through October 2018.

ZUMC raises $32K for coalition

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com After six weeks of collecting a Lenten offering, Zionsville United Methodist Church donated $32,500 May 8 to help faith the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition in its mission to reduce violence in the state’s capital.

“It was absolutely amazing, the connection that our church made with this effort,” said Sue Forry, lead of the Ten Point Ministry Team at ZUMC. “You’re almost awestruck to see that people in the suburbs would be willing to step up to help the inner city in that way.”

Ten Point Coalition formed in 1999 when a group of pastors from Indianapolis came together to create outreach patrol groups to walk through neighborhoods and connect with people on the street to find out how to help. Forry said outreach workers encourage kids to stay in school, use discussion to quell violence and give out cards for businesses that collaborate with Ten Point to provide jobs.

Forry heard about Ten Point three years ago and felt God calling her to join. ZUMC became a Ten Point church in 2015. As a

member church, ZUMC works to fundraise and support Ten Point’s efforts every year.

Each Lenten season, ZUMC donates the combined offering to a single cause. ZUMC Senior Pastor Glenn Howell said the church raised $10,000 on Easter Sunday alone.

“It’s a privilege to be able to help people,” Howell said.

ZUMC hopes the check will allow Ten Point to reach its goal of expanding to another neighborhood.

Students sweep history contest

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Five Zionsville Middle School students will head to Washington, D.C., in June to compete in the National Contest achievement for National History Day after nine students medaled at the state level, sweeping the Junior Documentary category.

A documentary chronicling the history of Crispus Attucks High School created by eighth-graders Sam Benedict and Jack Schrepferman won first place at the state event May 6.

“Originally, our focus was on the basketball team,” said Benedict of the first all African-American school in the nation to win a state championship.

Researching further he and Schrepferman learned the Indianapolis school was originally built to segregate black said white students and their focus shifted beyond sports.

“We didn’t know how much history and how influential the school was that is 25 minutes from here,” Benedict said.

and Sam Clayton developed a documentary about rotary jails.

Prior to the national competition in June, students are able to adjust their presentations based on judges’ feedback. Benedict and Schrepferman have made a few alterations and were able to incorporate Crispus Attucks High School’s 2017 boys basketball state championship win into the film.

More than 5,000 students across the country participated, with 450 competing at the state level in Indiana this year.

She has kids live with her whose parents can’t take care of them, and sometimes they even go to our school and we meet them. We also have class Dojo, and she finds us doing great things and gives us points to win prizes.

Jim Powers had never dwelled on his World War II service.

In fact, he seldom talked military about it before moving from South Bend to the Hoosier Village Retirement Center in Zionsville two years ago. Powers was one of several veterans recognized at the Veteran Garden dedication ceremony May 19 at Hoosier Village. The veterans were honored with a medal and their name and service on a brick in the garden.

“It’s absolutely fabulous,” Powers said.

Ron May, Hoosier Village chaplain, had the idea to start the garden after hearing about Bricks of Remembrance.

“They place those bricks around the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis,” May said.

May said that would be nice, but he and others at Hoosier Village thought it would be better to have the bricks in a spot where residents could see them more often. Thus, they decided to build the Veteran Garden. In addition to the veterans living at the community, May said if a spouse of a veteran who has died lives in Hoosier Village, they will honor that veteran as well.

“It was a fantastic turnout,” said May, who presided over the ceremony. “It’s so nice to be part of something that will be a lasting tribute to our veterans. We had wonderful support from the parent company (BHI) and the (BHI Foundation) and the staff that went above and beyond to put this together.”

May said the garden will likely be updated twice a year, near Veterans Day and Memorial Day. They honored 133 veterans at the ceremony, with 93 of them still living.

Powers, 92, and his wife, Marilyn, moved to Hoosier Village to be closer to their sons, Jeff, a Geist resident, and Jim, a Carmel resident.

Powers went with his son, Jeff, on the Indy Honor Flight a year ago. Powers said May was responsible for arranging that.

A member of the U.S. Army Air Corps., Powers was stationed in Italy, serving as the radio operator on a B-24 bomber, flying several combat missions.

“It’s stunning the amount of love and affection Hoosier Village gives to the veterans here,” Jeff said.

Hoosier Village resident Dr. Donald Spees, a retired Zionsville dentist and 1944 Zionsville Community High School graduate, was one of those honored. He served two years in the Navy in the Pacific Theater.

“This is nice for the veterans,” said Spees, whose son, Kevin, is a Zionsville dentist and member of the town council.

Program to examine Bryan’s stay

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com What’s the chance that a former U.S. secretary of state spent the night in a Zionsville home? history That’s the question that will be debated at a free program from the Zionsville Historical Society on June 4, whether or not William Jennings Bryan stayed at Bryan a local residence when he visited Zionsville.

Bryan, a former Nebraska congressman, lost presidential bids in 1896, 1900 and 1904 but eventually served as secretary of state under President Woodrow Wilson.

Between his attempts at the presidency, Bryan was involved in the Chautauqua Movement, named for the Lake Chautauqua region of New York where the movement began as a training for Methodist leaders, then evolved to educate adults in arts and humanities.

Bryan was a frequent speaker as the circuit traveled the country, but there is debate about the extent of the Chautauqua circuit locally and where Bryan might have

stayed when he visited Zionsville.

David Malcom learned of the possibility that his Queen Anne home in the Village housed the former politician when he read an old newspaper article quoting a former resident. He plans to share the extent of his research about his home, accounts of Bryan’s visits and the Chautauqua movement.

“This has been 40 years in the making,” said Malcom, a former teacher Malcolm who has lived in Zionsville nearly four decades.

The discussion will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. June 4 at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St. Regardless of the outcome, Malcom believes the possibility is what makes the town unique.

“One of the things I really believe in, the only way a town can really have an identity is to have a history,” he said. “We’ve got some old houses that people love. It gives us an identity, a substance, that other towns really don’t have.”

“Knowing the history of your town shows you a little bit about yourself,” Malcom said.

I still don’t clean my plate Commentary by Ward Degler I still haven’t mastered the art of “cleaning my plate.” When my wife and I are finished eating, her plate is plain talk clean enough to put away without washing. Mine looks like something the dog rejected.

This bothers me. Mostly because I was a kid during the Great Depression and knew a lot of people didn’t have enough to eat.

Some of the things that grew in our garden, however, God never intended people to eat. Turnips, rutabaga and okra come to mind. Rutabaga was the worst.

And this is where “plate-cleaning” became an issue. I would devour my pork chop and mashed potatoes and then sit there staring woefully at a clump of mushy rutabaga, untouched and pushed to the far edge of my plate.

“Clean your plate,” Dad would mutter as he helped himself to another dollup of that disgusting vegetable.

For long minutes I would stare at my plate, trying to conjure some powerful incantation that would banish this evil thing, or maybe make it taste like ice cream. When that failed, held my breath

and crammed my mouth full of what was undeniably the most vile tasting substance on Earth.

Then I grinned in achievement and hoped neither of my parents would notice the rutabaga residue still clinging to my plate.

I quickly spread it around to make it less obvious.

“There’s still enough on your plate to feed a family of starving Armenians,” my mother would intone.

The Armenians were mom’s trump card.

They were a religious minority in the Ottoman Empire, persecuted for their beliefs.

Between 1915 and 1925, some 1.5 million men, women and children died, many from starvation.

It didn’t matter that this all had happened more than 20 years earlier, and the Armenians were doing much better now. As far as mom and dad were concerned, they were still starving, and I was still faced with a big lump of rutabaga.

Polo season kicks off June 16

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Hickory Hall Polo Club in Whitestown will begin its 2017 season June 16. On Friday nights throughhickory hall out the season it will host Polo at Sunset, and on Saturdays it will host Polo on the Prairie. Each match benefits a charity. “(The charities will) do things like wine pulls or silent auctions to raise money. All of the gate money goes to the charity,” said Nicki Baltz, charity coordinator.

The cost to attend an event is $20 per carload. Guests pay at arrival, cash only.

“The admission is $20 per car whether that is one person or 20 people,” Baltz said. “That’s for the match and an evening of fun.”

The charities often line up halftime entertainment and food and beverages.

“The polo match is made up of four chuckers, which are like innings. They play two chuckers and then they have halftime,” Baltz said. “The charity holding the event that evening has some entertainment to promote their charity.”

Guests are allowed to bring dogs, blankets, chairs, food and beverages but no alcohol. Barn tours are available upon request.

Other charities represented this year include Boone County Senior Services, Indianapolis Mounted Police Association, Make-a-Wish, Boone County Habitat for Humanity, St. Alphonsus Knights of Columbus and Indiana Educational Scholarship Fund.

The 2017 season runs through Sept. 30.

Zionsville Half Marathon set for June 11

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com With the Zionsville Half Marathon approaching its second year, race director and founder Mike running Cole is seeing a rise in registrations.

“We’re about 10 percent ahead of last year at this time,” he said. “That’s my goal, to increase 10 percent a year.”

Cole said there were 402 runners last year. The goal is approximately 450 for this year.

“If we can get to the point in a few years where Cole we have 800 runners or so, that is about as much the town can probably handle, anyway,” he said.

The second Zionsville Half Marathon and 5K is set for 7:30 a.m. June 11, starting at 30 Main St. The races start at the same time, and then the 5K course splits off.

“It seems like a lot of the runners that ran it last year are running it again this year,” said Cole, who competed in track and cross country at Ball State. “I’ve been able to promote it at other marathons going on.”

Cole is a Zionsville Community High School assistant cross country and track and field coach. His oldest son, Logan, recently won the 2,400 meters in the North Suburban Conference meet as a Zionsville Middle School eighth-grader.

“We’re looking forward to see what he can do at the high school level,” Cole said.

His middle son, Skyler, was a sixthgrader on the ZMS track team. Aidan, a fourth-grader at Pleasant View Elementary School, will join his brothers at summer races at ZMS. Early packet pickup is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10 at Endurance House, 30 Main St. The fee for the half marathon is $50 and $30 for the 5K through May 31. The half marathon price increases to $60 June 1 to June 7. After June 7, online registration is closed. Runners can register at the early pickup June 10. Race day registration starts at 6 a.m. and is $65 for the half marathon and $35 for the 5K. All half marathon finishers receive a medal, and the top runners receive prize money. Out of a building that serves as the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry on 30th Street in Indianapolis, two Zionsville health care professionals help run a free medical clinic.

Operated by Gennesaret Free Clinics, this particular clinic operates while the pantry is distributing food.

Volunteers, including Dr. Lucinda Keller and pharmacist Nicole Jasperson, both with Zionsville ties, offer their professional help caring for patients. They work as part of a cohesive team of professionals that typically includes an administrative person (who signs people in and manages the files), a nurse, pharmacist and a doctor as well as other help when they can find it.

They try to see as many as 14 to 18 patients in a two-hour span, so extra hands are always helpful.

Volunteers with backgrounds as nurse practitioners, nurses and EMTs can be put to good use in preparing patients for their visit with the doctor, and the clinic makes use of college students, including those who are pre-med and those who are studying pharmacy. Often, the volunteers sign up for one shift a month, which may be two or three hours of work. Several of the open hours are in the evenings as well as Saturday morning, when patients are best able to come.

Keller gives her time freely because “there is a need, and I can do something about it. Often in life it is easier to write a check than to give time or energy, but sometimes we need to use our hands and feet to meet needs. I think Jesus wanted his followers to care for humanity,” she said.

Zionsville’s Sally Bassett shares spiritual benefits of yoga throughout the world

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Sally Bassett has learned to balance many roles in her lifetime, including professor, humanitarian, CEO, cover story author and world traveler. She’s found the peace and strength to handle it all through the spiritual benefits of yoga, and she’s hoping to help others discover them, too.

Bassett is the author of “Yoga through Christ: Via the Eight Limbs of Yoga,” published in February through Christian Faith Publishing. The book offers a step-by-step approach to developing spirituality through yoga. Bassett considers it a ministry from the mat.

The Zionsville resident is an adjunct professor at Christian Theological Seminary and Butler University, where she teaches yoga basics and philosophy. She also is the founder and president of the Peace through Yoga Foundation, a nonprofit she founded in 2012 to make an impact through transformational yoga and service.

The book is geared to every spiritual path, Bassett said, not just Christians. She recommends the book for yoga enthusiasts, theologians, students, teachers and general audiences.

“As a Christian, my path includes Christ.

We all want the same goal, but there are many paths. My book, hopefully, will inspire others to find their own spiritual path,” Bassett said. “Yoga is spiritual. It’s not religious.”

Bassett said most Westerners come to the mat for the physical benefits, but her book explores the spiritual benefits of yoga.

Bassett moved to Zionsville in 2009. Previously, she was immersed in the business world as the president and CEO of Ambassador Travel Club.

“Yoga gave me the balance I needed while in the busy corporate world,” she said. “It grounded me in quieting the mind.

I’d go to a class as a student with a busy ‘monkey-mind’ and could leave 75 minutes later in a very calm, Zen-like state. Yoga can actually be like peeling an onion one layer at a time. We’re not all the titles we wear each day.”

Bassett began training yoga teachers in 2002. That same year, she founded Peace through Yoga studios in Zionsville. In 2011 she opened the Peace Through Yoga: International Center for the Girls in the middle of the rainforest and two miles inland from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica. The center offers the Girls for Success program, which teaches 16 local girls English, sewing and yoga. Bassett travels to the center and hosts service retreats throughout the year.

travel, yogi and humanitarian backgrounds through her inner and outer journeys. She has visited more than 140 countries and said yoga is what gave her direction.

“Everybody gets on the mat for a reason. I ended up on the mat in 2001. It just brought me a lot of peace,” she said.

Chris Yovanovich, owner of Indiana Yoga Studio in Lebanon, previously taught at the Peace through Yoga Studios and is the director of development for the Peace though Yoga Foundation. “(Bassett) has a magical way of leaving you feeling more energetic, joyful and just lighter in your body and mind after taking her classes,” Yovanovich said. “By creating a sacred and safe space to go deeper into your spiritual practice, Sally is truly a transformative yoga teacher.”

Bassett hopes her book will help people strengthen and transform their spirituality through yoga.

“There truly would be peace on earth if everyone did yoga,” Bassett said. “I hope to inspire people to get on their mat through my book, regardless of religion.”

Edit-orialize Commentary by Terry Anker Modern word processing makes counting pages and words easy and uncomplicated.

At the bottom of this very page as it is being typed, Bill Gates has inserted a handy counter that identifies this as the 36th word on page 1 of 1. As we mature through our literate life, we learn at first single words. Then, we come to pull together sentences. Soon, paragraphs, pages, essays, papers and, even for some, books follow in due course.

But along the way, we learn a few basic rules. The story must progress in an understandable, hopefully entertaining fashion and follow the expected standard for length, language and form. For some, a 10th-grade English composition assignment of a five-page paper strikes fear. How can we ever use all that real estate? Then others of us have angst, knowing that there is no chance that we can get our point across in so few pages. So, to make it on to the 11th grade, we learn to edit.

As adults, few of us carry on the habit.

We use insufficient words, or too many, and leave the object of our intended communication hopelessly confused, or worse, with a misunderstanding of our intent. Even more, do our meandering epistles suggest a lack of command over the subject matter? How often do we ask an unassuming question, only to be inundated not with a simple yes or no but instead a surging fire hydrant of explanations and excuses? Do we use an abundance, or dearth, of words to clarify our point, or, perhaps on a bad day, to intentionally deceive? Are we our own editors, or do we expect those around us sort to it out alone? Can we editorialize without editing?

Always ready for new Lions Commentary by Gail Robbins Let me start by borrowing some words from our 2011-12 International Lions Club president, Wing-Kun Tam of clubs Hong Kong, China.

“Before I joined the Lions, I only knew it was an honor to be a member,” Tam said. “After I joined, I started to understand the spirit of the Lions.”

That’s pretty much how I feel. We are a service club, and we serve our community as well as the rest of the world. We live by our motto, “Where there’s a need, there’s a Lion.”

In Zionsville and around Boone County, our park events are pretty well known: the Eggnormous Egg Hunt, July 4th, July Sundays in the Park concerts, Fall Festival, Miss Fall Festival Outstanding Teen Pageant plus Pumpkin & Hayrides. Our club is involved in many activities, such as eye exams for schools and businesses, RAP (reading action program), collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids, Indiana Lions for the Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired, Speech & Hearing, Leader Dog (I am a Leader Dog trustee), Indiana Lions Eye Bank, Lions Cancer Control Fund, and throw in our diabetes and environmental committees, and we have plenty to keep our members active.

90s. We are always accepting new Lions.

It takes a lot of them to accomplish our goals. Service club memberships in America have been really dropping, as they grow huge in India and Japan.

My goals aren’t only to keep improving our park and playgrounds (although I would like to add some special needs play equipment), but to add new members and accomplish our club’s bigger goals with helping our younger school children with reading and getting more involved with diabetes and environmental needs. We are so thankful for our Partners in the Park, along with our Friends in the Park and our in-kind donations. We couldn’t do all we do without them!

I’ve been with the Zionsville Lions Club for four years. I believe I’m the fourth female president in our club’s 87 years.

The emotional breakdown continues, my friends. You may recall my pitiful sobs in a Chick-fil-A drive-thru a humor few weeks back thanks to the looming graduation of our oldest. I thought I’d gotten it out of my system, which as Doo likes to point out, is typically cold-hearted and devoid of emotion. But the tears keep on comin’.

Next on the list of triggers was the Academy Award-nominated movie “Lion,” which I watched on the recommendation of a younger sister. Curse you, Christina! I cried for 1 hour and 39 minutes straight, plus an additional 20 minutes while I went to pick up a daughter from practice. And let me tell you, navigating 14 roundabouts through gut-wrenching sobs is not easy. “Lion” is a beautifully made film with fantastic acting, but if you aren’t in the mood for pathetic hiccups and free-flowing snot, or if you have to drive in Carmel, take a hard pass.

Then I headed into the second-to-last week of school, which at the high school level is perhaps the most stressful. The threat of projects, speeches and final exams can overwhelm even the most capable of students, resulting in me becoming a makeshift therapist (never mind that other people’s distress makes me extremely uncomfortable, and that I like giving hugs as much as I enjoy sopping up dog vomit while it’s still warm). So I spent several days listening, empathizing and encouraging, sometimes to kids I didn’t even teach, only to return home each afternoon to deal with my own set of teenagers, one of whom isn’t coping too well, either. She wound up boo-hooing in the shower for a solid 12 minutes one night.

Oh, and then a best friend from childhood called to tell me her dad had died.

That’s it. I’m officially, emotionally spent.

Co-parenting after a divorce can be challenging enough, but trying to coordinate schedules between parents and a child can often create additional frustration. Summer schedules are typically much different than during the school year and, as summer break is quickly approaching, it is important to be mindful of the challenges of juggling differing schedules. The Indiana Parenting Time Guidelines (IPTG) do offer some direction on how to divide a child’s summer vacation, but remember these are just bare-minimum guidelines and that it is best to do what works for the unique needs of the child(ren) and the parents.

Plan summer schedules ahead as early as possible. The IPTG require a noncustodial parent to make their summer parenting time selection by April 1st of each year; however, if you are currently in the process of going through a divorce, creating a summer parenting time schedule should be at the top of your to-do list. Summer vacation begins the day after school dismisses for the summer and ends the day before school resumes for the new school year. If you plan to follow the IPTG, for children 5 years and older who follow a traditional school schedule, each parent gets one-half of the child(ren)’s summer vacation. Although summer vacation is to be shared equally between parents, it can be divided in a way which works best for the parents and child(ren). Planning an out-of-town vacation? Regular parenting time essentially flip flops for whichever parent is currently exercising their extended summer parenting time.

Get that vacation scheduled and on the books early so the other parent can plan accordingly. When creating a schedule, the IPTG dictate that parents should also consider the other parent’s work schedule, and a parent’s work restrictions should never be used against them. Let the other parent know as early as possible if any employer-imposed restrictions exist that may conflict with a summer parenting schedule, and plan accordingly.

Remember that what’s in the best interest of the child(ren) is most important! A summer parenting plan should be crafted to fit the child(ren)’s specific needs. Consider speaking to your child(ren), especially if they’re older, about their wishes for summer vacation.

What may work for a 10-year-old may not work for as well for a 16-year-old. Although a child should never make the ultimate decision as to whether parenting time occurs, it is important to consider a child’s activities and wishes, so they can also enjoy their vacation from school. If your child participated in a particular summer camp or sports league prior to your separation, the divorce should not dictate a significant change. Be mindful fact that academic, extracurricular, and social activities are just as important to the child(ren)’s development, even if it’s during your scheduled parenting time. It is not uncommon for adolescents to have to study more often, to be heavily involved in extracurricular activities (such as sports), or to have varying social activities with friends, and the IPTG recognize that parents should make all reasonable efforts to accommodate that participation.

Be flexible and avoid parenting power struggles. Unless an inability to civilly and effectively communicate exists (thereby creating an environment that puts the child(ren)’s well-being at risk), communication with your former spouse is key. Even happily married couples often have differing parenting styles and a separation can intensify these differences. Pick your battles and find agreeable ways to communicate with each other.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and to do its part the Youth and Family Health Network of mental health Boone County on May 3 held “Mental Health Matters” at the Whitestown Municipal Complex. As part of the event, a panel that included Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen spoke about mental health issues that affect many in the community.

The keynote speaker was Darren Evans, a former Indianapolis Colts running back and current employee of the state of Indiana’s Dept. of Workforce Development’s HIRE Program. Evans spoke about his hardships growing up and fighting through injuries to reach the NFL, only to suffer another one that turned out to be career-ending on his first play.

“I didn’t have football. I lost my identity.

I didn’t know who I was, but my family, my mental fortitude helped me with that,” Evans said.

heightened by witnessing his daughter, Lebanon police officer Taylor Nielsen, suffer from PTSD triggered by the 2016 murder of a Zionsville mother and son.

“We have to do everything we can to stop the stigma that comes along with mental health issues,” Mike Nielsen said.

“I can tell you that over the past 20 years we have not done a good job of taking care of mental health issues.”

Nielsen said that 82 percent of the 220 inmates in his jail on a daily basis deal with some type of mental illness.

CruZionsville welcomes History of Wheels

The seventh annual CruZionsville charity car show is a free event set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downhistory town Zionsville. Steve Tarr said the name of the event is derived from cars cruising into Zionsville. Tarr, a Zionsville resident, is a member of the Central Indiana Porsche Club of America, the presenting sponsor.

Henle and the Loops will perform live music from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tarr said he expects approximately 4,000 visitors at the event.

“We want to make this meaningful and fun for the community,” Tarr said.

Tarr said he is delighted CruZionsville will be the first organization to host the Indiana Historical Society’s History on Wheels traveling exhibit, which is titled “Auto Indiana.”

The exhibit is dedicated to Indiana’s automotive and racing heritage. The five themes examined are the roots of the auto industry; roadside culture; parts and pieces/modern manufacturing; extreme: racing, muscle cars and monster trucks and the future; and innovation and consequence.

Tarr said the car show raises money through sponsors, car owner registrations and merchandise sales to donate to the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2016, it raised $20,000.

Another new feature this year will be radio-controlled Porsche cars racing on a track from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“The drivers with the best times will race in the CruZionsville Grand Prix (at 2:30 p.m.),” Tarr said. “We have support of local merchants who have their names on the (radiocontrolled) racecars, so that will be a lot of fun.”

Feherty to perform at Palladium

Dave Feherty is not your typical golf reporter.

Known for his sense of humor and his off-beat antics, Feherty, who has a selfentertainment titled Golf Channel show, has interviewed former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. He also interviewed Donald Trump before he took office.

“It’s been unbelievable,” Feherty said. “It’s so much fun to do over the last seven years. It’s not like work.”

Feherty will perform at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at the Palladium in Carmel.

“It’s a mixture of jokes, anecdotes and my stories from a lifetime in golf,” Feherty said.

“But it’s not all about golf, it’s probably 50 percent.”

Feherty, who said he is less politically correct than he is on TV, said some stories are about “growing up in Northern Ireland with an idiot family,” so there are a lot of Irish jokes. Feherty is brutally honest about battling his own demons.

“I try not to suffer from depression or alcohol-

ism, I try to live with it,” said Feherty, who has been sober since 2005. “You have to maintain your sense of humor through it. That’s been an enormous help for me.”

Feherty, 58, is a former PGA Tour and European Tour competitor. After retiring, he began working as an on-course reporter for CBS. In 2016, he moved to NBC Sports’ golf coverage.

“I tell other people’s stories as well, unapologetically, because if I don’t tell them, they’re going to die,” Feherty said. “(The stories) are from men like Ken Venturi and Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and (Seve) Ballesteros.”

Feherty said interviewing NBA great Bill Russell was an amazing experience.

“The greatest winner in the history of American sports, grew up in segregation, but doesn’t have a race card in his deck,” Feherty said. “The most gracious and dignified (person) I’ve ever met. When I shook hands with him, there was a warmth and electricity he had that I’ve only felt a couple times in my life. Carmel Klavier competition — The fourth annual Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition will be held June 27 to July 1 in Carmel. Throughout the competition, 130 contestants ages 5 to 18 will gather at the Center for the Performing Arts to represent several countries and 14 U.S. states. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. June 27. In the evening, Duo Petrof will perform a duet concert. Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Servings: 12 Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds medium Yukon gold potatoes, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 5 teaspoons McCormick Grill Mates Bacon Chipotle Seasoning, divided, 6 slices Applewood smoked bacon, cut into 1/4-inch pieces, 1 cup chopped yellow onion, 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper, 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese, 2 tablespoons finely chopped green onions, 1/4 cup sour cream Directions: Heat grill to medium. Place potatoes on microwavable plate. Pierce potatoes with fork several times. Microwave on high 5-6 minutes, or until fork-tender but still firm. Let stand until cool enough to handle. In large bowl, toss potatoes, oil and 3 teaspoons seasoning until well coated.

Big ideas for big spaces in Carmel Commentary by Randy Sorrell This massive Carmel property is surrounded by rare open fields with large homes hovering in the distance. The pool is appropriately scaled to the outdoor living surrounds, which demanded the landscape and privacy solutions be just as powerful.

To create the needed privacy, we employed these three strategies.

PERGOLA We design/construct as many pergolas for shade as we do for privacy, and adding drama to a space that feels too stale or open. The resulting pergola in the featured project is 36-feet long, spanning in excess of the pool width. Note that each side returns with a right angle. The space is immediately hugged and manageable while eliminating the vulnerable, naked feel. Structurally sound columns detail the structure and are borrowed elements from inside the beautiful home.

GO BIG Large spaces command big things: big furniture, big pots, big trees, big beds, big ideas! The naturalized diablo ninebark in the background have grown together and are in excess of 8-feet tall. They completely eliminated the vulnerable sight lines. The evergreen upright junipers glimpsed behind them offers another level of privacy and appreciated winter influence. Blue junipers were repeated along the pool edge, serving as adhesive to make the space more visually manageable and inspiring. Perimeter shade trees fill the tall canopy.

COLOR AND LAYERS All spaces appreciate color, but huge spaces are desperate for it in waves of coordination. Layers and color help define the space and prompts energy. The interest of layers keeps the space moving while enhancing privacy,

too. We love Russian sage, black-eyed susans, moonbeam coreopsis, repeat blooming roses and purple coneflower around pools. They scream color and flowers during pool months.

ORDINANCE NO. 05-08-2017-B An ordinance amending the sewer surcharge established by Ordinance 09-14-15 to pay for the cost of the local sewers in the Cedar Point Subdivision serving lots 1 - 85 in Hamilton County, Indiana; provisions for financing of payment and other matters connected therewith.

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Clay Township Regional Waste District heretofore approved plans, specifications and estimates and determined to construct, equip, own, operate and maintain sewage works within an area commonly known as the Cedar Point Subdivision serving lots 1 - 85, and has completed the constructed of the sewage works, and has determined the cost is less than originally estimated; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CLAY TOWNSHIP REGIONAL WASTE DISTRICT, Indiana, that: Section 1. Applicable Fees and Charges.

Every person whose premises, Cedar Point Subdivision serving lots 1 – 85, is to be served by the sewage works of the District shall be charged for the services provided, including a monthly user charge in the amounts and in the manner provided for by the District.

The cost associated with the purchase and installation of the private low pressure pump which includes all apparatuses, lateral assemblies, and the sewer lateral shall be the responsibility of the property owner. These costs are not otherwise included in or covered by this Ordinance.

In addition, every person whose premises, in Cedar Point Subdivision lots 1 - 85, is to be served by the sewage works of the District shall pay the Local Construction Cost of Three Thousand Eighty Six Dollars ($3,086) at such time that said premises is connected to the sewage system of the District or prior to that time. Until paid, the Local Construction Cost shall increase at an annual rate of 2.5% commencing on January 1, 2018 as detailed in Exhibit A. Upon passage of this ordinance, refunds of One Hundred Forty Two Dollars ($142) shall be issued for all property owners who paid the estimated cost of Three Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Eight Dollars ($3,228) before final costs were determined.

Section 2. Connection to Sanitary Sewer.

Connection to the sanitary sewer shall be in compliance with the District’s Sanitary Sewer Connection Policy.

The owner of property that is to be served by the sewage works of the District must pay in full the Local Construction Cost per this ordinance. The owner shall also pay the Equivalent Dwelling Unit (EDU) fee and Inspection fee in effect at the time of the issuance of the permit for connection or prior to that time to lock in at the current ordinance rate.

Section 3. Severability.

The invalidity of any section, clause, sentence, or provision of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of any part of this Ordinance which can be given effect without such invalid part or parts.

Section 5. Effective Date.

This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage.

Recalling Prague’s reformation Commentary by Don Knebel Prague’s Old Town Square is one of the most colorful of such plazas in Europe. It is dominated by a church and travel a monument, both reflecting a period of religious reform unknown to most Americans.

During the Middle Ages, Old Town Square was anchored by Prague’s Town Hall, acquired in 1338. In 1385, the Catholic Church began building the twin-spired Church of Our Lady Before Tyn along the eastern side of the square. Like some other Gothic churches, one tower was intentionally made larger than the other, reportedly showing that only God is perfect.

Jan Hus, born in 1369, at an early age moved to Prague, where he became a priest. One hundred years before Martin Luther, Hus preached against the excesses of the Church and was burned at the stake for his unrecanted teachings on July 6, 1415. His executioners reportedly said they were cooking his goose, a cruel play on the meaning of his last name. Hus’ outraged followers, called Hussites, started a rebel-

lion against the Church that became known as the Hussite Wars. The Hussites took over the Tyn Church as their main church and created a golden chalice as their symbol, signifying that all congregants could partake of the Eucharist wine. In 1621, after a series of battles, Catholic forces finally defeated the Hussites and regained control of Tyn Church. They melted the Hussite chalice and used the gold to create a radiant figure of Mary and the baby Jesus, which they mounted between the towers of Tyn Church.

On July 6, 1915, exactly 500 years after Hus’ killing, the residents of Prague unveiled a massive monument in Old Town Square in his honor. The monument shows Hus looking toward Tyn Church, surrounded on one side by warriors and on the other by Hussites forced to leave Prague in 1621.
