ZPD receives crime-scene vehicle

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Police Dept. has a new tool to fight crime thanks to the Zionsville Fire Dept.

A retired ambulance PUBLIC SAFETY is being retrofitted for criminal investigations after Mayor Tim Haak approved the transfer of the vehicle to the police department.

The vehicle will now be known as ZPD’s Crime Scene Response Unit.

ZPD Chief Robert Knox said buying a new vehicle of the same quality would be difficult.

“We had budgeted for a crime scene vehicle for a few years, but then the option of taking the retired ambulance came along and we know how well the fire department took care of it, so when it became available for free it really was a no-brainer,” Knox said. “It’s so much more than I could have budgeted for. It’s built to specs, it’s heavier and has so many compartments. It saved us a lot of money instead of going out to have something made.”

The vehicle will be used for evidence processing and will be equipped with the tools evidence technicians need to respond to a crime scene. All evidence from a crime scene can be collected and processed within the vehicle, which will include a computer, printers, tables and more.

“The (crime scene) vehicle we have is an old heating and cooling-type vehicle and it has served its purpose. But it’s just a box truck with shelving in it, and we have a lot of equipment – generators, tools, portable lights, bags of evidence processing items - that were just loose,” Knox said. “Now, all that equipment and other items will have its own compartments and won’t be rattling around on some shelving.”

Sgt. Joe Dennemann, ZPD’s lead evidence tech, will work out of the vehicle along with other officers and detectives.

“The evidence techs will know it will be reliable and should last a very long time,” Knox said. “It’s one more asset not only for the department but for the whole town.”

The first grant, for $1,225, is part of Duke’s Foreign Direct Investment Partnership Program that will help implement FDI strategies that support economic development growth. The second grant, for $5,000, is part of the Marketing Partnership Program to implement strategic marketing plans that showcase the community’s assets.

Boone EDC announces new structure – The Boone County Economic Development Corporation has recently completed a restructuring process and has announced its new board members and the creation of the Boone EDC Platinum Circle. The Boone EDC Platinum Circle is a group of leaders passionate about Boone County and about the economic development, talent attraction and placemaking efforts of the Boone EDC. The Boone EDC Platinum Circle, comprised of public officials, education representatives and private investors, will provide crucial insights, connections and feedback to the board and staff to guide the Boone EDC’s strategies. ZCHS grad named Queen Scholar

Johnson, a 500 Festival Princess, was listening to an announce500 FESTIVAL ment on who would be named Queen Scholar.

“It was surreal,” she said. “To announce Queen Scholar, a piece of the winner’s Princess application is read just before announcing the name. For those few seconds, only I knew I was the 2019 500 Festival Queen Scholar and it is those few seconds that will really stick with me. It is truly an unparalleled honor to continue to represent the 500 Festival in this capacity.”

Johnson, a 2016 Zionsville Community High School graduate and Purdue junior, was named May 18 at the 500 Festival Breakfast at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Each 500 Festival Princess receives a $1,000 scholarship. Johnson is the recipient of an additional $1,500 educational scholarship from Fifth Third Bank.

Wisdom of a reluctant hero Commentary by Ward Degler The first thing Jason Seaman will tell you is that he is not a hero. Even if he did thwart a school shooting PLAIN TALK last May. Even if he did save lives. And even if he got shot in the process.

“If I let 15 minutes on May 25, 2018, define me as a person, then I have failed as a person,” the Noblesville West Middle School coach and science teacher told the audience at the Hamilton County Prayer Breakfast May 17.

Seaman went on to say that not only is he not a hero, but “who I am is still being worked out every day. It’s a lifelong process.”

That defining process took a sharp, unexpected turn when Seaman was a junior in high school.

“I was a gifted athlete,” he said. “All-State football and basketball. Seven Big Ten universities were offering me scholarships. My goal in life was to play Big Ten football, and it was all coming true.”

And then, there was that ill-fated basketball game.

“I jumped up to get a rebound, and when I came down my knee was destroyed,” he said.

What followed was extensive surgery and long months of painful rehab.

“And all the scholarship offers vanished,” he said.

With unexpected time on his hands, Sea-

man did a lot soul-searching.

“I realized that I had been totally selfish.

I didn’t even recognize the support that others had given me – my family, teachers, coaches and my physical therapist,” he said.

“It was all about me.”

That was when Seaman decided he wanted to be a teacher.

“I wanted a chance to give to others the way others had given to me,” he said.

During the 2018 shooting, a 13-year-old student entered the classroom with a gun and opened fire. A female student was wounded, and Seaman was shot three times while wrestling the shooter to the floor.

“That’s not what people will remember about me,” he said. “They will remember how I treat others every day – my family, my kids, my students. They’ll remember those things because that’s who I am. The impact my life has on others is not a one-day event.

It’s a lifetime pursuit.”

He added that the same is true for all of us, and he challenged the audience to think about ways each one of us is influencing those in our lives.

“It’s important,” he said. “The little things you do for others can make a big difference.”

DISPATCHES F.C. Tucker stats – The housing market in Zionsville slowed last month as homes took more time to sell. According to F.C. Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in April 2019 was $418,180, a decrease of 6.3 percent (but still the highest price in the area) compared to April 2018.

Homes in the city sold in an average of 68 days, 4 days slower than in April last year.

Zionsville school board approves two questions to boost staff, build school

The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees voted unanimously May 13 to approve two referendum COVER STORY questions for the Nov. 5 ballot. The first is an operating levy and the second is a capital bond.

District leaders presented the questions at the January 2019 board meeting as a solution to rising enrollment rates. According to the Indiana Business Research Center’s projections, ZCS will see an increase of 200 or more students each year for the next decade. Many schools in the district will reach, or exceed, capacity by 2023.

The questions are whether to continue the current operating referendum at the same rate that began in 2015, and whether to allow and fund construction of a sixth elementary school, additions to the high school and renovations to the transportation center.

“I was on the board back in 2010 when we had our first failed referenda and I experienced, as many of you did, the effects of what happened when that failed,” board member Jane Burgess said. “It was probably one of the most painful times that I have ever served on this board, seeing class sizes go up, teachers being let go, programming being cut, and it’s a time I hope we’ll never go back to again.”

If the referendum doesn’t pass, district leaders said ZCS could encounter increased class sizes, portable classrooms, traveling classes, student traffic hazards and multiple redistricting efforts.

“When we put children in classrooms where there’s too many kids, teachers can’t get to know them,” said Molly Seward, a Zionsville resident who spoke at the May 13 public hearing. “When we put kids in situations where even physically there’s not a lot of room, I think it becomes really detrimental to them because no longer are they a person, they’re a number and they become insignificant.”

Other residents echoed Seward’s views, including Mark Munley, Ann Bender and Mike Karnuta.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

By continuing the operating referendum, the aggregate school tax rate will be $1.268 per $100 of assessed value, which is slightly lower than the current rate of $1.298.

The capital referendum’s proposed tax rate is 19.69 cents per $100 of property value.

According to Robison, 68 percent of bills for all types of properties will decrease slightly or stay the same and 32 percent will increase. A tax calculator will be available online for residents to determine individual impact. case is there. The compelling need is there, and the time is now.”

The Nov. 5 ballot will address two referendum topics: 1. A November 2019 ballot question that, if successful, would extend the existing operating referendum capped at the current maximum school tax rate of $0.2444 for an eight-year term with proceeds to be used entirely for the funding of an adequate teaching and counseling staff throughout ZCS. If successful, the 2015 operating referendum would be repealed and the new referendum installed at the exact same tax rate.

2. A separate November 2019 ballot question would authorize the construction of a new (sixth) elementary school on the S 875 E campus, renovations and additions throughout Zionsville Community High School which will provide for approximately 32 additional classrooms and additional common spaces, and other facility projects throughout the district in preparation for additional space at the Transportation Center all with a maximum tax rate.

“The need for the referendum to be on the Nov. 5 ballot has been clearly shared by oth-

ers and is backed by data and demographics analysis,” Karnuta said. “The business

The capital bond would fund the expansion project, estimated at $89 million. The board proposes the district-owned S 875 E property as home for the sixth elementary school. It would mirror Union Elementary School’s floor plan. Supt. Scott Robison said a single redistricting effort that coincides with the opening of the elementary school in 2022 could rebalance attendance rates until 2028.

The high school expansion would create a second east-west corridor, add 32 classrooms and allow for a centralized cafeteria and multi-purpose space.

The last portion of the project includes adding parking spaces to the transportation center and reconfiguring Boone Meadow Elementary for more classroom spaces.

“It is critical that we do (one referendum) simultaneously with the other one so that we ensure that we have the monies to do staffing as we grow in the new facilities,” Robison said.

Design would begin immediately, with the elementary school construction scheduled to begin mid-2020 and the high school additions to begin in 2021, if the referenda are approved Nov. 5.

LETTER Younger residents feel they aren’t welcome

Commentary by Terry Anker Why is it that certain things seem to disproportionately upset us? Little annoying matters, like getting the wrong order at the drive-thru or that person driving the car in front of us who stops without warning before entering a roundabout, seem to have the magic power to ruin our morning, day, or even week.

Maybe we are just being empathetic. If others were showing signs of fear, would we suddenly be afraid? If they were laughing, would we find ourselves doing the same?

If so, is it such a surprise that we’d likewise reflect the unfriendliness of others? Still, many infractions delivering the most egregious irritation are blithely inert. The perpetrator has no idea that they are disturbing us or, sigh, even that we exist. It might be exactly that final element, that they are indifferent to our presence, which brings the most acute retribution from us.

How can they fail to acknowledge us? We are good people. We have had a tough day. Who do they think they are? We’ve waited our turn.

We’ve followed the rules! They are terrible people!

In a swelling torrent, indignation transforms into rage. It follows that our sense of self is too quickly transferred to others. As such, the slightest transgression elicits wrath.

Is it possible, just possible, that we are simply turning an inconvenience into a problem? The moment required to comply with the officious TSA airport gorilla is inconsequential to the hours spent once they put us on the do-not-fly list. The tiresomeness of stopping behind the school bus pales to the shame of hitting a child while we are self-absorbed with our own tribulations. Isn’t life complicated enough without turning molehills into mountains?

Dance mom days revival Commentary by Danielle Wilson Friends, I have so much to share this week I don’t even know where to start. The storm that took out two of our trees and left baby raccoons stranded HUMOR in our garage and bathroom wall (another raccoon story!)?

The Mother’s Day debacle that caused me to seriously question the way I’ve raised my little angels (not one card, flower or cleaned dish!)? Or the fact that I am hosting a graduation party this Thursday and never sent out invitations (although I did order a cake!)?

Worthy fodder, for sure. But honestly, all of these pale in comparison to this little tidbit: My daughter is returning to competitive dance! After a year-long hiatus, she has decided to unearth her jazz shoes and give it another go. The best part? I will be a dance mom again! And I’m not being facetious. I’m only somewhat ashamed to say that I truly missed living vicariously through my tiny dancer and could not be more thrilled to be

headed back into the fray of sequined booty shorts, dressing-room drama and considerable financial strain.

That still sounds snarky, but I’m speaking my truth! During her five years of competition dance, I got to know the other moms fairly well, and relying on Facebook to share in their experiences was tougher than I imagined it would be. So, when my daughter expressed similar feelings a few months back, I secretly hoped she’d change her mind. And she did!

We have until the fall before life becomes exciting again, but rest assured, friends, great stories are on the horizon (presumably without villainous raccoons and degenerate offspring)!

Gifts sure to please Dad? Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Mary Ellen never gives me anything for Father’s Day. She explains, “You’re not my father; you’re Brett’s father.”

“But I always give you a gift for Mother’s Day!” “Come on, Dick. That’s a totally different situation.”

Grant provides curbside composting

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com Heather Maybury started her curbside composting business in 2013 with $300 and a Honda Civic.

“Because once you get an idea ENVIRONMENT in your mind, no one can tell you no,” Maybury said. “That first year I made sure to stay out of my competitor’s - Earth Mama’s - area because she was there first. So, when she got out of the business (in 2014), she called me and said, ‘I know you treat your customers right. Would you like to buy me out?’ At that point, I was a stay-at-home mom and had a whole six clients after a year.”

Now, in addition to Marion County and Carmel, Earth Mama Compost is offering a curbside compost pilot program to up to 200 clients in Zionsville and Whitestown at a monthly cost of $20 per resident. The pilot includes bi-weekly residential curbside service and compoststarter kits. A grant from the Boone County Solid Waste Management is helping pay for community education on composting.

“I want people who already compost to feel like they are making a huge difference and people who want to compost to have the access and empower them to make the change for the better,” Maybury said. “There are so many people in neighborhoods with covenants against composting or they have too small a yard and would love to compost and feel guilty about throwing trash away, so I want to give them an option so they know their food

waste is going for good.”

Maybury collects an average of two tons of food waste a a week. It is taken to Green Cycle, where it’s composted and sold to landscapers, farmers and others.

“If you’re concerned about the environment, composting is actually on the list of the top 80 ways to reverse climate change,” she said. “It reduces the time the food waste takes to break down, and by doing so, it reduces the amount of methane gas and carbon dioxide as it breaks down. We are always talking about our carbon footprint, and by composting, it really affects that.”

DISPATCHES Stock of the Week — Cardinal Health Inc. (CAH) provides medical products and pharmaceuticals to hospitals, health-care systems, pharmacies, surgical centers, clinical labs and physicians’ offices. It had 433 million outstanding shares in 2003 and now has 295 million, with the share total dropping every year. The dividend of $1.91/share/yr., recently yielding 3.96 percent appears quite secure and has tripled in the last decade.

And Cardinal Health recently formed a partnership with CVS Caremark to source more generic drugs jointly, which should help boost its business while reducing costs for patients.

Consistency is key Commentary by Bill Dean Do you remember a guy named Reggie Miller? No. 31? Some would argue he’s the greatest Indiana Pacer in hisFITNESS tory. Well, for seven exciting years, I had a front row seat to Reggie’s greatness.

Prior to opening my personal training studio in 2005, I was the strength and conditioning coach for the Pacers. Without a doubt, Reggie was one of the most consistent, hardest-working athletes I’ve ever trained (you could also add Austin Croshere, Derrick McKey, Chris Mullin and Al Harrington to this short list). According to my rough calculations, Reggie spent 2,500 hours per year perfecting his craft, rarely taking a day off. He was the first player to arrive each day and one of the last to leave – without fail. The sharp shooting (and trash talking — yes, he also practiced that skill) that Pacers’ fans witnessed on the court for 18 years had a direct correlation to Reggie’s meticulous preparation before each practice, shoot-around and game.

Sure, there were doctors, coaches, therapists, trainers and staff at Reggie’s disposal. Yes, we flew on chartered jets, ate catered meals and stayed in 5-star hotels. However, there was something else that made Reggie great: Consistency. He was one of the best to wear the jersey because he focused on his craft each and ev-

ery day. People are best at the things they do most often – and that’s not something exclusive to professional athletes.

Gone are my days in the NBA. It was a fun ride while it lasted and I do miss the competition, but my current role as a personal trainer is much more challenging and just as rewarding. I still consider myself a part of a team, although it’s most often a team of two. I’ve helped people complete halfmarathons, ski down mountains after back surgery and live pain-free. I’ve been told, “You changed my life” on several occasions because of the work I do with my current clients. And they have something in common with Reggie: They’re consistent. They each exercise at least 30 minutes a day, three to five days per week, sticking to that schedule long-term.

So, I challenge you to make an appointment with yourself. Schedule your fitness like you would any other important matter. Just as eating and sleeping are non-negotiable, so is your health. With consistency, we can all be fit enough to get off the sidelines and confidently pursue our passions.

Artistic director Hancock puts his most personal pieces into one performance

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Gregory Hancock has found a way to connect his three most personal pieces.

“Until There is No More,” DANCE “Every Moment … Every Day” and “The Violin Under the Bed” will be part of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre’s performance at 7 p.m. June 7 and 8 at The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

This is the second time each piece has been done, but in the past, all were at separate times.

“Every Moment … Every Day,” is about Hancock’s grief over his mother Florence Marie Hancock’s death at age 88 in September 2014. His mother was still working full time at St. Vincent in medical records department.

“Every moment of every day I miss my mom,” said Hancock, executive artistic director of GHDT. “I miss her presence.

People don’t understand grief. They think it’s something you deal with and move on. In the piece, I use a truck loaded with rocks that the dancer drags around, which is the essence of me, (and) carries across the stage. It’s something that is present with you all the time and you learn to deal with. You move forward because you have to. I have to keep doing my work. I have to keep paying my bills. When you lose someone significant like that in your life, you don’t move on from it.

“My mother was way more than my mother. She was my teacher, my spiritual advisor, my business partner, my travel companion. Her absence created such a void, personally and professionally.”

The opening piece, “Until There is No More,” is about Hancock’s battle with kidney cancer in 2014. In August, he will be cancer-free for five years.

“It’s about facing your mortality, your fears, your ills,” said Hancock, whose father, Norman, died when he was a teenager.

The piece about his mother is touching, funny and hopeful, he said.

“It’s more a celebration of her and things she liked,” Hancock said. “She was a great softball player, so there is a softball piece.”

When his mother was young, her large family in Kansas was poor. At 12, she started cleaning houses to help pay bills.

The house owner had a violin under her bed and she told Hancock’s mother not to touch the violin.

“My mother would pull it out under the bed and just look at it and imagined playing it because her family couldn’t afford to give her lessons,” he said. “Many years later, I bought her a violin for Christmas.

She never learned to play it. She tried and stuff, but she put it under her bed. The point was her life had come to the point she could have a violin under her bed.”

Every Day,” she has a scene with fellow company dancer Taylar Green playing Hancock’s spirit.

“It’s a special moment everyone dreams about to be able to feel that person one

last time,” Lessaris said. “Maybe have that closure. I touched Taylar’s shoulder and there is that feeling you are going to be OK. You can do this without me because I’ve prepared you for this.’ ‘Violin Under the Bed’ is more a celebration for the life Florence led. It’s about her meeting Gregory’s father, playing softball, her love of travel.

It’s a bright piece that has beautiful music.

Even if you didn’t know Florence, it’s easy to get lost in the color and music.”

Green can relate to the stories of grief.

“I lost my sister tragically (at age 22) and I still go through these emotions all the time,” Green said. “For me, I am portraying Gregory, but it’s also a journey for me every time.”

Isaac Jones, a dancer with the Dayton Ballot, previously played in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” for GHDT. Jones takes on Hancock’s essence in the opening piece and his father’s spirit in the final piece.

“When you lose somebody, it’s important to remember the beauty and love they brought into life,” Jones said.

Many of the recipes originate from owner Amy Long or her family. The beer-braised beef sandwich combines beer-braised beef, giardiniera peppers, fried onions, arugula, mozzarella cheese and a creamy horseradish on a hoagie roll. Try it with a side of coleslaw.

I also tried the smoked-then-fried wings ($10), which are tossed in the house buffayaki — a fusion of buffalo and teriyaki – sauce. Other sauce options also are available. Fork + Ale House offers a variety of

Farmers don’t own market Commentary by Curtis Honeycutt I love this time of year for many reasons, but perhaps my favorite thing about early summer is the GRAMMAR GUY farmers market.

But today’s big question is: Does “farmers market” need an apostrophe in it? We have three contending spellings vying for the top spot: farmers market, farmer’s market and farmers’ market. Which is it?

Farmers market is what the AP Stylebook considers a “descriptive phrase” (as opposed to a possessive phrase). In general, the farmers do not own the market, nor does one sole farmer. And, as far as I know, they’re not selling farmers at the market. It’s a market for farmers, not a market that belongs to farmers.

Use an apostrophe when “of” would be an accurate longer form possessive phrase. For example: Newton’s law. This is a law of Newton. Victoria’s Secret is a secret of, or belonging to, Victoria.

For descriptive phrases, you don’t need an apostrophe when “for” or “by” are accurate longer form phrases. For example: Colts quarterback is a quarterback for

the Colts. A teachers college is a college for teachers. In these cases, the plural noun (farmers, Colts or teachers) function as adjectives to describe what kind of market, quarterback, or school you’re discussing.

Now, for some exceptions (because English is fun)! Descriptive phrases such as women’s rugby get an apostrophe because the plural “women” doesn’t end in the letter “s.” Other examples include children’s hospital (the children certainly don’t own the hospital) and men’s restroom.

As long as my local farmers market is always well-stocked with corn-related items, I don’t think I’ll complain if I see a rogue apostrophe on its sign. Besides, apostrophes are just commas giving high fives. I do, however, personally think the term “farmers market” as a descriptive phrase does not require an apostrophe.

Re-igniting the eternal flame Commentary by Don Knebel John F. Kennedy, born 102 years ago May 29, is one of two presidents (William Howard Taft is the other) buried in TRAVEL Arlington National Cemetery.

He is the only president whose grave is marked by a so-called “eternal flame.”

After President Kennedy was assassinated Nov. 22, 1963, his wife Jacqueline selected his gravesite on a hillside just below Arlington House, which the president had admired just months earlier. The day before the funeral, Mrs. Kennedy asked that the grave be forever marked by a flame like the one at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Engineers hastily connected a tiki torch to a propane tank, concealing the equipment beneath evergreen branches. To accommodate growing crowds, the body of the president was later moved 20 feet downhill and a more permanent flame mechanism installed after cemetery officials concluded that the gravesite was not subject to the rules of Arlington National Cemetery that

banned such devices. The new mechanism was set in a round fieldstone from Cape Cod and included a lighter to reignite the flame whenever it goes out, which it does from time to time, usually because of the wind.

Despite the re-ignition mechanism, the flame has been manually re-lighted on at least three occasions, the first when a group of school children unintentionally doused it with holy water. In 1967, a heavy rain flooded the flame and the re-igniter.

In 2013, the re-igniter failed and had to be replaced, requiring the flame to be extinguished after first being used to light a temporary flame nearby.

After her death in 1994, Jacqueline Kennedy was buried beside her husband, joining two of their children who died shortly after birth. Thousands of people still visit their gravesite every year, some attracted by its eternal flame.

The future of breast imaging has arrived at St.Vincent Carmel Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Center, as doctors are now able to use a new technology that has a better rate of detecting early breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue than mammography.

Tomosynthesis, like a CT scan, takes images from multiple angles and uses computer processing to create a 3D image that a radiologist can use to look at a breast from various angles.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Instead of having one view, you have a series of slices,â&#x20AC;? says Dr. Janalyn Ferguson, a radiologist at St.Vincent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of like youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re looking at a breast like slices of bread.â&#x20AC;?

Recent studies have shown that tomosynthesis can increase the cancer detection rate by about 20 to 25 percent.

It also decreases the likelihood that patients will be called back for additional imaging, as the limited number of views provided by mammograms can cause normal overlapping tissue to appear cancerous.

With tomosynthesis, doctors can look at about 50 images per breast instead of just a few. It may take a little longer for patients to get results, but physicians believe the many benefits are worth the wait.
