TPCA breaks ground on new high school building
By James Feichtner • james@youarecurrent.com Traders Point Christian Academy officially broke ground May 15 on its newest addition – a $7.5 million high school facilEducation ity. The school, which was founded by Traders Point Christian Church, currently shares the same facility for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, which TPCA Head of School Ron Evans said is at maximum capacity. “It’s very, very tight, and the church has been gracious to open up parts of their building for us during the day, because we just don’t have enough room,” he said. The new facility will be open for the 2017 school year at 6600 S. Indianapolis Rd. in Whitestown. The building is expected to accommodate an additional 160 high school students and will feature chapels, assembly halls and a student-run coffee shop. Evans said the school system has seen continued growth over past years and the new building will provide the extra space needed for future growth. “Our dream is that the first phase of this project, when it gets done, will easily accommodate 250 high school students,” Evans said. “We’re at about 90 (students) in high school now. Right now, it looks like we’ll be a little over 700 (students) from early childhood through grade 12 for next year. It’s not only about making room for the high school students but making more room for next year.”

Evans said the building will be the first of four planned buildings on the property and that the high school facility is the first step toward preparing for the expansion. “It’s about making room for what the demand is, really,” Evans said. “Our hope would be that beyond this building, this property is planned for up to three additional buildings. So we’re dreaming big. This is the first phase of that, a $7.5 million campaign that we’re raising money for, and we’ve raised more than half of that already.” Joining Evans at the groundbreaking ceremony was Indiana Gov. Mike Pence who congratulated TPCA for its efforts in investing in education. “I’m truly grateful on behalf of the people of this state and of this community to be able to
turn some soil today and celebrate this groundbreaking,” Pence said. “I want to commend the team at Trader’s Point Christian Schools. While there is a little ways to go, the partnership of members at TPCC is truly extraordinary and represents an incredible contribution to education in the state of Indiana.” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton also commended TPCA for its continued efforts of expanding its school system in the town. “On behalf of the town council members and the entire staff of the town, we are very thankful that the church and the school and the donors are making this investment in this school for this product to be in our town, in our county and in our region,” Norton said.

Stewart a top softball pitcher By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com University of Louisiana-Lafayette pitcher Alex Stewart has developed a fire that has made her one of the top achievement college softball pitchers nationally. “We’ve been developing my competitive personality and my confidence,” the 2013 Zionsville Community High School graduate said. “Every practice I’m pitching against the best hitters in the country with my team. With the more experiences I’ve gotten with that and having my team trust me, there is nothing to be afraid of out on the field. We’ve been sticking to the same protocol and preparation for the past three years, so that’s built a lot of confidence. I’ve developed new pitches since coming here so it’s a credit to our protocol.” Prior to the NCAA tournament, Stewart had a 27-4 record with a 1.52 earned run average. She was averaging nearly a strikeout an inning (177 strikeouts in 180 innings) for the ESPN.com 10th-ranked Ragin’ Cajuns. As a freshman, Stewart made just four appearances with a 0-2 mark and a 9.49 ERA. In 2015, she improved to 10-2 with a 2.09 ERA. “I’m always trying to get better,” Stewart said. “If you put in the work, one day it’s all

I know I still have strides to go.” Stewart said the biggest difference for her this season has been the team chemistry. “We’re playing for each other,” Stewart said. “We have a great senior class with leadership and we just all love each other.” At first, Stewart said she was nervous being so far away from home. “But right away I was loved by my sisters (on the team). It was fun from then on,” Stewart said. “The town and fans are so supportive.”

Friend to share about Doris Day
Dispatches
By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Mary Anne Barothy had been one of Doris Day’s biggest fans since she was little. “I saw ‘Calamity Jane’ in the event mid-‘50s and something about that struck me,” said Barothy, who grew up in Indianapolis. “I had a teacher at St. Agnes (Academy) say, ‘If you only spent as much time on your homework as you do on Doris Day, you’d be a fine student.’” As fate would have it, the super fan became a personal secretary to Day for four years. Barothy, 68, will discuss her book, “A Day at a Time: An Indiana Girl’s Sentimental Journey to Doris Day’s Hollywood and Beyond,” May 27 in the chapel at Zionsville Meadows, 675 S. Ford Rd. Lunch will begin at noon with the program to follow at 12:30 p.m. The program is organized by Boone County Senior Services. For more, call 317-873-8939, or email info@ booneseniors.org. RSVP by May 25 to attend. Barothy, who returned to Indianapolis in the late 1970s, had written a manuscript after her time with Day but never did anything with it, turning it into a book in 2007. Day, 92, lives in Carmel, Calif. Barothy took trips to visit a friend, another Day fan in Los Angeles, but never ran into Day.
Mary Anne Barothy and Doris Day in 1973. (Submitted photo)
Finally on her third visit, they were at the bakery where Day visited often. “She rode in on her bike, and I just about passed out,” Barothy said. Barothy, then 24, decided to move to Los Angeles in 1968, to work in public relations with the May Department Stores Co. “The Doris Day Show” made its debut in September 1968. “I had a terrible car accident and broke both legs and my arm in early 1970,” Barothy said. She was off work for 10 months and would run into Day at the bakery. “Two days after I went back to work, Doris called and asked if I wanted to come work for her,” Barothy said.

Whitestown Town Hall provides home for adoptable kittens By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com Walk into Whitestown Town Hall and you’ll find the usual workplace environment, with two furry exceptions – kittens, lookpets ing for a home. Two months ago, at a Humane Society for Boone County board meeting, members were discussing different ways to display the kittens and cats filling foster homes. “Dogs seem to get a lot of exposure, but cats really don’t,” said Michelle Atkinson, director of fosters at the Humane Society. “Tanya (Sumner) mentioned perhaps the town hall could take a few in. We thought that was such a great idea.” Sumner, director of public relations for Whitestown, said the town was happy to help the Humane Society through its busy spring kitten “explosion” season. “We have the space, and we get a lot of foot traffic through the lobby here at the Whitestown Municipal Complex, so it seemed like a natural partnership,” Sumner said. “Until the new, permanent Humane Society for Boone County rescue shelter is built here in Whitestown, this seemed like a great option for exposure for these little kittens looking for a new home. And hopefully, town hall will be a convenient place for families looking for a new pet to visit during normal business hours.” So, on May 3, Tiny Tim, Oliver and Bluto – gray male tabbies – moved into Town Hall, complete with biographies and adoption forms. Within days the trio found their “forever” homes. Because of the success getting the first three adopted, two more felines – Petey, 10, and Suzie, 5, – settled into Town Hall on May 12. Their stories, however, are a bit different. Petey, a black and white male, and Suzie, a tabby female, were surrendered to HSBC after

their owner went into a nursing home. Atkinson said both are loving, social cats but will need some time to warm up in a new environment. The move helps the shelter by freeing up much needed space in foster homes. “We have taken in several litters in the last month, and the foster home keeps them until they are 3 months old and can be spayed or neutered, so now their foster has room and can bottle feed a new litter instead of having big kittens at her house,” Atkinson said. While HSBC has partnered with area vet clinics in the past to feature adoptable cats, this is the first time it’s been done at a town hall or business. Atkinson said she hopes it won’t be the last time. “I would certainly hope others would consider doing this. Maybe an insurance company or a storefront on the brick street – anyone who is interested,” she said. “We can get all the supplies they need and send volunteers to them.” For more on hosting kittens or fostering, contact Atkinson at hsforbc@gmail.com.

boys and girls club of zionsville west reaches out
BINGO Domingo at Zionsville Meadows Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville West recently threw a party – BINGO Domingo – for the residents of the Zionsville Meadows nursing home. The kids handed out prizes to the winners and served a Mexican buffet for lunch. To prepare for the party, the club applied to the United Way of Central Indiana for a grant to fund the purchase of the prizes as well as the buffet lunch. The party was intended to serve as a vehicle for intergenerational engagement. The kids got to listen to 1950s music, and the adults enjoyed the energy the kids brought. Partygoers effusively expressed appreciation to the organizers, describing it is a much welcomed change of pace. (Above left) The partygoers await the calling of the next number. Celebrating an icy spring day Commentary by Ward Degler The lady from the bookshop walked across the street to offer me a blanket and hot chocolate. She said I looked cold. That was probably because last Saturday plain talk was arguably the coldest May 14 on record. And, that was the day our village held its annual Brick Street Market. I was there with a collection of prints and note cards from some of my artwork. Halfway through setting up my tent, I realized I had left my gloves at home. My fingers were turning blue, and there was frost on my fingernails. Once things were up and running, I realized I had also left my coat at home. Why did I think just a heavy shirt, a heavier sweatshirt and a bulky hoodie would be enough to keep me warm? I called home and asked my wife to bring all the warm clothes she could find. She arrived minutes later with an assortment of sweaters, parkas, mukluks and whale blubber. Traffic was surprisingly brisk, and coldbraving art lovers walked into my tent. Most folks were dressed for the weather, but sometime in mid-afternoon a gaggle of teenage guys walked by in T-shirts. I figured they were
just showing off and would be running the defroster on high on their way home. They reminded me of the Winter Carnival held in St. Paul, Minn., every January. It’s always 20-below and several contingents of Norse-blooded college students inevitably try to outdo one another in skimpy beachwear. And beer, of course. Lots of beer. As the day wore on and the crowd thinned to practically none, I recalled another May 14 a mere 12 years ago. It was my greatgranddaughter’s first birthday, and her mom decided to celebrate with a party at the park. My memory may have faded, but I recall blizzard conditions. The wind howled, and as the temperature plummeted, we huddled in the park shelter and warmed our hands over the single candle on the cake. When the celebrant blew it out, we immediately relit it for the extra warmth. I thanked the lady from the bookshop for the blanket and hot drink and asked her if she had any firewood. Business owner Mike Cole organizes inaugural Zionsville Half Marathon By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Bringing a half marathon to Zionsville seemed like the right thing for Mike Cole to do. “I’m an avid runner,” cover story Cole said. “I’ve raced since I probably was 14 years old, and I’m 41 now. I wanted to see a big community race starting and finishing in downtown Zionsville.” The inaugural Zionsville Half Marathon will start and finish in front of Greek’s Pizzeria, on Main Street, which Cole owns. The half marathon, along with a 5K, will start at 7:30 a.m. June 12. Cole said other communities such as Carmel, Noblesville, Geist and Indianapolis have half marathons, so he felt Zionsville should as well. “It’s something I planned (on) doing the last two or three years and finally got around to doing it,” he said. Cole has three sons who are runners, including Logan, 13, who will be an eighth grader at Zionsville Middle School in the fall. Syler, 11, will join the ZMS team as a sixth grader, while Aidan, 9, will be in fourth grade in the fall. Cole, who ran cross-country and track at Ball State, will become the Zionsville Community High School assistant cross-country coach in the fall. Cole had been Tri-State University’s (now Trine University) men’s and women’s cross-country and track and field coach for seven years. Prior to that, he was a Calumet High School cross-country coach. The past five years, Cole has been a private coach. Cole started a Zionsville youth cross-country club for kids ages 7 to 14, which includes his three sons. The money raised from the races, including three 4K summer races, will go to the high school and middle school cross-country programs. “I’m trying to build a stronger youth running program here so we can hopefully compete with the state powerhouse Carmel and some
of the other strong cross-country programs like Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern,” Cole said. “This area is super strong as far as cross-country and track. I’m hoping to get Zionsville as close as it can to competing. That’s my goal. As my kids get older and older, I’d love to see them have a chance to win a state championship medal in cross-country.” Logan has already run the mile in 4:58, a record for ZMS for seventh graders, Cole said. “I’ve been running Mike Cole crosses the finish line to win the USATF 5K championship in since I was five years 2014. FROM THE COMMUNIT Y
Who are you? Study tells us We recently were handed the results of our latest round of commissioned marketplace research. SMARI, Inc. of Carmel did the heavy lifting for us, and we’ve learned even more about what people want in their Current each week. (You might recall that our report historically has been based on such findings. We, indeed, let the community edit our product.) So, who are you? For starters, we know 70 percent of our initial readers are female, 82 percent are married, 69 percent have lived in the community for 10 or more years, 47 percent of households have no one 18 years old or younger in them and while 46 percent of households earn a minimum of $100,000 a year, another 11 percent of households earn at least $200,000 a year. We also know 92 percent of Current recipients read our editions, and 64 percent of them keep Current in the home from one to seven days. Our audience is most fond of dining out (fine dining, sit-down dining and fast-food dining), travel, parks, spas and beauty opportunities, shopping for cars or automotive products, gardening and landscaping, live performances, health/wellness and fitness, museums, in-theatre movies, do-it-yourself projects, auctions and all manner of cultural events. Cheating cheaters Commentary by Terry Anker If cheaters never prosper, why do they seem to win almost every time? Take the high road. Turn the other cheek. It can be tough to listen quietly as others express hurtful, ignorant or even intentionally destructive remarks. They take advantage of guile, fear and manipulation to keep us put. And, they “win” every time. Well, not every time. Trust matters. We humans learned long before the first creative types memorialized our joint efforts on the cave walls that it is to our mutual benefit to work in groups. We protect each other. We sacrifice our own interest for each other. We have a much better chance of prevailing against the Woolly mammoth when in the company of each other. When we cultivate confidence and fidelity in our friends and family, we can best count on their support when and where we need it. Alternatively, lying, bullying and other subterfuge, no matter how clever we imagine it to be, eventually, wears thin.
Prevaricating, threatening and manipulating can keep others under our will for a moment, but only until the occasion allows for escape. Wouldn’t we be better served to forge our relationships in honesty, knowing that our rejection, if deserved, will be immediate rather, than coming when we most need the backing? If we tell the truth and let folks get to know us upfront, wouldn’t we expect that, when the chips are down, they are there because they want to be and will stay at our sides? Fear, fraud and deception are like iron shackles – they only work when tightly bound but fail if loosened. Sure, we might get expelled from the mean-girl club, but knowing that our friends know us, and are still willing to stand with us, is worth it. Cheaters may win occasionally, but they never prosper for long. Terry Anker is an associate editor of Current Publishing, LLC. You may email him at terry@ youarecurrent.com.
Q UOTE OF THE WEEK Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
– Martin Luther King Jr.
For the life of me, I could not think of anything to write about this week until I spent two and a half hours humor on a bike, cycling through the small towns and farms just north of where I live. If that sounds miserable to you, believe me, it was. Every single minute of it was an exercise in concentration, perseverance and bladder control. But I’m hell-bent on finishing a half-Ironman in June, and just because the temperature is an unseasonable 43 degrees with wind gusts of up to 25 mph does not mean you can go back to bed on a Saturday. There’s guard practice to carpool and dance competitions to attend! Anyhoo, back to my two-wheel road trip. I’ve always had remarkably strong powers of observation (it’s a gift), so I decided to put them to use, at least when I wasn’t accidently heading for a ditch or purposely peeing in one. I was absolutely amazed at the weird, wonderful and undoubtedly disturbing things I saw within a 10-mile radius of my house. There were horses, cows, geese and hogs; honeysuckle, roses, poison ivy and dandelions; Colts flags, IU basketball hoops, WHS signs and a rogue Patriots banner (How dare you, sir!). I smelled bonfires, fresh manure and gasoline; rode past new subdivisions, crumbling Craftsmen and what I’m pretty sure was a meth lab; and discovered a back road that doesn’t even appear on Google maps. I saw dental offices, consignment shops and eggs for sale; was passed by pickups, mini-vans, a semi and a rusty garbage truck; and wondered on several occasions how long we’d last after a Yellowstone super volcano eruption with all the silos and water towers punctuating the landscape. (I recently read “Ashfall,” and it makes a zombie apocalypse look like a clogged toilet.) My toes froze, my sunglass were blown off and with the wind, I think I actually was pedaling backwards at times. But I was rewarded with a fascinating look at rural Indiana and something non-controversial to write about for the week. Peace out. Danielle Wilson is a contributing columnist. Meal delivery biz launches By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For some busy families, Stephanie Marshall might seem like an angel. That’s because her business, food Slice of Heaven Delivered, supplies a full array of meals. “I have a whole menu of different items for a lot of different diets and needs,” said Marshall, who lives on the outskirts of Zionsville. “I prepare them and deliver them with instructions on Marshall how they should bake them or grill them.” Most of Marshall’s meals are prepared so families can bake them at home in the oven. Some meals, like her pulled pork, are already cooked when delivered. Marshall, who started the business in early April, is in the process of getting the proper food handling permits. She said she expects to have those soon and will start working at Carmel’s Kitchen, a commercial kitchen in Carmel. Once she starts at Carmel’s Kitchen, she plans to set up a website. Her Facebook page is under Slice of Heaven Delivered. She estimates

90 percent of her clients are from Carmel. Marshall, 44, has long delivered meals to friends in need. “If I found out someone just had a baby, or they just got home from the hospital, I would just make an extra meal and deliver it to people’s houses out of love,” said Marshall. “My husband (Chuck) one day said, ‘Why don’t you turn this into a real-life business?’ I see a lot of moms and dads who are busy and don’t have time to cook a meal. I like to see them enjoy their families like I got to do when I was (a stay-at-home mom).”

Camp Riley registration now open By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Camp Riley is designed to help children with special diet restrictions such as Jack Sullivan enjoy a traditional camp summer atmosphere. “There is not really any other camp that would take a child like Jack because of the seizures,” said his father, Todd Sullivan. “Jack is on a medical diet, and they fulfill all of his needs for the ketogenic diet. It’s a very difficult diet to maintain. Just the food prep is a huge undertaking. All his meals need to be weighed and measured. What they do is really amazing.” Jack, 16, a Zionsville Community High School freshman, has Glut1 deficiency, a genetic disorder that impairs brain metabolism. The symptoms include cognitive, behavioral and disordered movement and seizures. Camp Riley is designed to empower children ages 8 to 18 with physical disabilities by providing life-changing experiences. Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health provides medical staff for the camp, which is held at Bradford Woods in Martinsville. Jack said his favorite things about Camp Riley are “the alpine tower and the friends I make.” The alpine tower is a 50-foot jungle

gym of climbing. Jack went to Camp Riley for one week in 2014 and two weeks last year. “They do all the normal camp stuff from canoeing, zip lining, wall climbing, singing and dancing and being a kid,” Todd said. The staff-to-camper ratio never exceeds 1-to-3. Registration for camp is now open. For more, visit RileyKids.org/Camp. Read the full story at currentzionsville.com.

A.R.N. to host Memorial Day ceremony By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com For Jennifer Nelson Williams, the A.R.N. Funeral and Cremation Services Memorial Day Art Contest gives her business a chance to celebrate veterans and the art talent of Zionsville middle art school students. A.R.N., which stands for Aaron Ruben Nelson, will present the fourth annual Memorial Day Art Contest along with a community program at 7 p.m. May 26 at A.R.N., 1411 N. Michigan Rd., Zionsville. The artwork, which revolves around the theme of Memorial Day, will be on display through June 30. The work is from students at Zionsville and Zionsville West middle schools. “Some of the art teachers have formed curriculum around Memorial Day,” said Williams, president of A.R.N. and daughter of CEO Max Nelson. “Some of them do it as an outside project. The art can be in any medium and (the students) can form partnerships and produce the art together.” The contest pays $250 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. The artist must be present to win. If the artist is not present, no award will be given. Williams said typically they receive approximately 100 submissions. “Since we’re not art critics, the art is judged by MyArt instructors in Zionsville,” Williams said. The ceremony includes American Legion members. “Sometimes we have people from the Wounded Warriors,” Williams said. “The last couple of years the commander from the American Legion post has spoken about the significance of being a veteran

When guitarist Casey Harshbarger played at Zionsville Community High School during a battle of the bands competition music as a sophomore, he realized what he wanted to do for a living. “We didn’t win, but it was a pretty pivotal moment in my life,” Harshbarger said. “I got to play ‘Eruption’ by Van Halen and pretty much got a standing ovation,” he said. “Right then and there I thought, ‘I’ve got to figure out how to do this for the rest of my life.’” On June 1, Harshbarger will return to Zionsville with his band The Warrior Kings to open the Lincoln Park Concert Series. They will play from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “We do original music of our own,” he said, along with covers of groups like Led Zeppelin. “It’s based on guitar. We do a lot of musical exploring.” A uniqueness of their band lies in the lead vocalist, Benjamin Williams, who is also the drummer. “It’s amazing that he can do both things at the same time, and not just do them but do them well,” Harshbarger said. Jeff Stone on bass rounds out the trio. “We tried to really create a brand of music

that people would kind of know,” Harshbarger said. “There’s an expectation for what we’re going to produce.” The Warrior Kings’ albums are available for download on iTunes and Amazon. They perform throughout Indianapolis but are often at the Slippery Noodle or in Nashville at Chateau Thomas. Harshbarger, who began his musical career playing the French horn at Zionsville Middle School, picked up a beat-up guitar in the band room and began taking lessons shortly thereafter. In the ’90s he began teaching guitar as a way to continue doing what he loved. “I’m just happy to be making a living playing guitar,” he said.

Where’s Amy enjoyed the VIP Tea Party with special guests and cast members from the Central Indiana Dance Ensemble before their production of “Alice in Wonderland” at Civic Theatre. The room was decorated beautifully with colorful tables, place settings and a red carpet. Attendees of the party ate cupcakes and sweets by Cahill Bakes of Fishers and delicious traditional finger sandwiches. It was so fun to see the children who attended cheer with glee as they had the opportunity to meet Alice and her cast members who came dressed and ready to entertain before the show. I loved catching up with Artistic Director and CIDE Owner Suzann DeLay who was proud of her students and the ensemble’s mission is to educate, inspire and perform. That is exactly what they did as I sat an awe at the brilliant performance of “Alice in Wonderland.” Everything from the dancing, acting, music, sets and costumes was perfect. Every single character came to life, the dancing was exceptional and indeed like Alice, the CIDE’s magical production left the audience wondering if it was just a dream or a real-life adventure. Where’s Amy gives an official Mad Hatter hats off to Alice and her gang and urges everyone not to be late for the next important CIDE date. For more, visit cidedance.org.

Blueprint for Improvement: Elegant bathroom transformation Commentary by Larry Greene
After solutions:
After
The goal was to create more open, functional bathroom for the homeowners that added the elegant details they were looking for. 1. The dividing wall was removed, creating a more open space and allowing larger shower and cabinetry footprints. 2. The larger shower features a stunning curved glass door and adjacent wall panel. 3. A spa-like, custom shower system was installed, enabling the homeowners to use multiple fixtures at once. 4. A new, soaker tub replaced the old carpeted, jetted tub. The new tub faucet is another eyecatching detail. 5. The new 10-foot-long vanity was set between the two windows, providing much needed storage and a makeup area. 6. The finishes combine the traditional feeling of their home with the glitzy and elegant touches the homeowners had dreamed of for years.
Before Background info: This 1980s master bathroom on Geist Reservoir, in the Feather Cove neighborhood, was in desperate need of an update! Even with multiple windows, a skylight and a vaulted ceiling, it felt too dark and cramped, with a wall separating the small shower and toilet from the rest of the space.
Before problems: The existing space had a dysfunctional vanity, carpeted tub, cramped shower and outdated finishes. Simply, by removing the wall separating the shower and toilet from the rest of the space, we were able to overcome the challenges the homeowners faced.

The Parliament Building in Budapest, Hungary. (Photo by Don Knebel)
Budapest, a city on the Danube Commentary by Don Knebel Presumably because Hungary does not figure much into U.S. political or religious history, far fewer Americans visit Budatravel pest than London, Paris or Rome. That is unfortunate. Budapest is one of the world’s great cities, with magnificent buildings, beautiful settings and its own impressive history. Budapest was formed in 1873 by the merger of Buda, a city on hills west of the Danube River, and Pest, a city on the flat areas east of the river. The cities were joined physically in 1849 by the “Chain Bridge,” a large suspension bridge completed 24 years before the Brooklyn Bridge. Even before their official merger, the cities jointly served as co-capital of AustriaHungary, a powerful empire that existed from 1867 to 1918. During the height of the Empire, the Hungarian Parliament Building was constructed along the Danube on the Pest side. The river front façade of this elaborate Gothic Revival style building is six feet wider than that of London’s Palace of Westminster, whose design inspired it. Today, Budapest’s
parliament building is the world’s third largest. Budapest also includes what is said to be the world’s second largest synagogue, completed in 1859 in a Moorish style reflecting the good relationship between Budapest’s Jews and Muslims when the city was controlled by the Islamic Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries. Picturesque Castle Hill, across the Danube from the parliament building, includes the imposing Buda Castle and the 14th century Matthias Church. The church held the coronation of Charles IV of Hungary, the last ruler of Austria-Hungary, who renounced the Empire after its defeat in World War I. Today the church roof is covered in bright orange Zsolnay tiles, invented in Hungary. In October 2013, readers of Condé Nast Traveler named Budapest the “world’s top city.” It is certainly among them. Don Knebel is a local resident who works for Barnes & Thornburg LLP.
