ZPD K-9s battling health issues

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Police Dept. is without available K-9s as both dogs are battling injuries or health issues. public safety Jelka, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, is recovering from surgeries after being hit by a pickup truck May 15. She was playing with a ball with her handler, ZPD officer Josh Stutesman, when it deflected into the street near Stutesman’s Westfield home.

She was struck by the truck and suffered a compound fracture in her left hind leg and a hole in her abdomen that pushed her organs forward, making it hard to breathe.

Jelka was rushed to MedVet Indianapolis for a two-hour surgery. On May 17, she had another emergency surgery after complications with a chest tube led to “very grave, dire circumstances,” according to ZPD Chief Robert Knox.

“She came through surgery just amazing. She’s doing well right now, (although) yesterday morning I was told she was doing great and 15 minutes later the doctor called and said something took a turn,” Knox said.

“It’s been quite a ride so far.”

Police don’t know yet if Jelka will be able to return to her role on the force.

“Jelka may never work as a police canine again. However, there is always a chance her nerves and bones will heal beyond expectations,” ZPD Sgt. Adrian Martin said.

“This adversity will limit the agency to one K-9 until other options are explored or if Jelka makes a substantial recovery.”

Eso, ZPD’s other K-9, is also having health problems and has been unable to work for the last couple of weeks. He’s been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and is beginning to develop arthritis in his hips and back. His handler, Sgt. Brad Kiefer, hopes he can return to work soon.

“There’s not anything that’s just going to cure it. It’s something he’s going to have for the rest of his life. We’re trying to see if we can get something to get him back to work where he feels good enough to work where he’s not constantly going to be in pain or sick while working,” Kiefer said. “Right now it’s just kind of been a trial and error trying to find a different combination of medications that’s going to get him feeling at least better than what he is now.”

The ZPD K-9 program is funded through donations, and Knox said that Jelka’s vet bills have exceeded what was in the fund.

The vet estimated costs at $10,000 to $13,000, but Knox thinks it could go higher.

“I don’t even have a line item for the K-9s (in my budget),” Knox said. “Everything has been donations so far. If we lose a dog right now, and if we to have to buy another one, I don’t have the funds to even do that.”

Donations for the program may be made by sending a check to ZPD and writing “K-9 fund” in the memo line,” Knox said.

Dispatches Essay contest winner – ZCHS junior Jonathan Ralstin was named the national grand prize winner in an essay contest from The Bill of Rights Institute for its We the Students Ralstin contest. Ralstin won a $5,000 cash prize, as well as a full scholarship to the Institute’s Constitutional Academy in Washington D.C. this summer. Ralstin’s essay was titled “Does peaceful resistance to laws positively or negatively impact a free society?”

Academic All-Stars named – Forty high school seniors from throughout Indiana have been named 2017 Indiana Academic AllStars, including several from local schools.

They include: Elise Zaniker, University High School; Neil Thompson, Zionsville Community High School; Michael Wang, Carmel High School; Ashton Murray, Fishers High School; Alessia Bernocco, Guerin High School; Tyler Zhang, Hamilton Southeastern High School.

In addition, Zaniker received a $1,000 scholarship from Purdue University.

New roadwork project – Milestone Contractors has begun work on a $1.4 million project to add turn lanes at the Interstate 465 and U.S. 421/Michigan Road interchange on the north side of Indianapolis. All interchange ramps are planned to remain open during the project. Some lanes at the interchange will be temporarily narrowed and shifted to maintain traffic and provide space for construction. The project is anticipated to be complete by November.

Teen police academy – The Zionsville Police Teen Academy is accepting applications.

The academy is a one-week program for kids ages 12-16 who might be interested in law enforcement.

Caucus picks Plunkett as next councilor

Princess familiar with IMS

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Carly Bailey knows her way around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“My father was an 500 FESTIVAL employee for almost 20 years,” Bailey said. “I would spend a lot of time there. At the parade, I would see all the Princesses, and I thought I would love to be that representation of the community, my family and now Bailey Purdue University.”

Now, the 2014 Zionsville Community High School graduate is doing that as one of the 33 500 Festival Princesses.

Her father, Kelly Bailey, was general manager of the Brickyard Crossing Inn, which closed in 2008.

Bailey recently completed her junior year as a nursing student at Purdue.

She is switching to IU Health North to work in its neonatal intensive care unit.

She said her message to young girls who might want to be princesses is “be your-

self, be authentic, take advantage of any opportunities."

Another Princess, Shivani Bajpai, is a Zionsville resident who lived within the Carmel school district, graduating from CHS in 2013.

Bajpai, an IUPUI graduate in biology, is waiting to hear on her medical school applications.

“My best friend (Lena Peters) was a Princess before I was, so (I enjoyed) just watching her do all Bajpai these amazing things,” Bajpai said. “I saw her grow as a person, too, over the year. When the Princess applications opened again, it was like, ‘You got to do it.’”

Bajpai said she is looking forward to the May 28 race.

“I went once in 2015 with my father, who is Indian, and two of my uncles, who are British and Australian, and my brother-inlaw, who is American,” Bajpai said. “It was the first time for all of us. They came for my sister’s wedding but it was the perfect time to go. We all had a great time.”

Randel honored for aiding sport

“I was very surACHIEVEMENT prised and very humbled and honored to achieve that award,” Randel said.

The longtime Zionsville resident received the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2017 President’s Distinguished Service Award April 29 during the Hall of Fame’s 16th Annual Women’s Awards Banquet at Primo’s Banquet Hall in Indianapolis. Each year the award is given to one person at the men’s and women’s Hall of Fame banquets.

The award is given to a non-coach, nonbasketball player who has gone “above and beyond” in service, commitment, dedication, participation and loyalty to the Hall of Fame. Randel has been an associate director and volunteer for 16 years. There are 125 to 133 associate directors, which is a volunteer position.

“Prior to being with the Hall of Fame, I was part of an association (Indiana Citizens for Sports Equality) with other women trying to get equal opportunities for girls in the Indiana high schools,” Randel said.

“Whatever the boys had, we wanted the girls to have the same.”

The group disbanded when the Hall of Fame started the women’s banquet and began more support for girls basketball.

Randel said the driving timeline was to have the first Hall of Fame induction for women at least 25 years after the first girls state tournament, which was in 1975-76.

“There needed to be a group supporting the women’s banquet, and I said I would be glad to help,” Randel said.

Alpha Leos give back

By Nick Poust • news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Alpha Leo Club has a history of assisting and mentoring clubs children in need. On May 3, it presented the Zionsville Boys & Girls Club with a $750 check to help the nonprofit purchase a new game table.

Before and after the check presentation, the Alpha Leo Club members, made up of students ages 12 to 18 from the Zionsville community, met with the Boys & Girls Club’s youth to make an array of crafts, including dreamcatchers.

Cale Phillips, a junior at Zionsville Community High School and secretary of the Zionsville Alpha Leo Club board, was among the club members to make crafts and play basketball with kids during the afternoon’s festivities. He is in his third year as a member of the club and loves getting the opportunity to benefit kids’ lives.

“After a long day at school I was looking forward to coming here, relaxing, playing with the kids, being creative, playing games and the sense of giving back,” Phillips said.

What began as a job to balance seasonal work during the winter months turned into a longer gig for Zionsville education Community Schools bus driver Roger Adams, who celebrates 40 years of driving this week.

“It’s something I enjoy doing, so it’s not hard to come back,” he said.

Adams has the longest tenure of the roughly 90 bus drivers at ZCS and plans to add at least a few more years.

“I started out driving bus No. 1, route one,” he said. He’s driven several of the routes over the years, but for the majority of his career has transported students in the Village.

Meredith Abbitt, who has been driving ZCS buses for 30 years, began by driving teams to sporting events. A former athlete himself, playing basketball, baseball and softball, Abbitt said he could relate to the players going to and from games.

“I can sympathize with the boys when you lose a hard game,” he said. Abbitt was part of the 1953 Zionsville Union basketball team that won the regional basketball championship and lost in the semistate finals.

“I’ve got good memories,” Abbitt said.

“It’s my privilege.”

Both men agree that the kids are one of their favorite aspects of the job.

“I think kids are better now than they were years ago,” Adams said.

Adams recalled that the parking lots were gravel when he first began driving, and the oak tree that stood when he was a student at Eagle Elementary is still behind the school.

By driving elementary students, Adams said they can set expectations with one another before the students reach a potentially “rambunctious” middle school age.

Silverware returns to Union

By Desiree Williams • news@currentzionsville.com Girl Scout Troop 742 launched a pilot program in April at Union GIRL SCOUTS Elementary that encourages students to help the environment by using less plastic. The fourth-grade troop asked the school to provide silverware at lunch instead of plastic sporks.

Rachel Hatcher co-leads Troop 742 with Christina Race. As a troop leader, Hatcher said her goal is to foster the girls’ leadership skills.

This year, the troop wanted to pursue a Bronze Award, the highest award for a Girl Scout Junior. The troop must complete a leadership journey and a project within the community to succeed. One Scout suggested a project to reduce plastic use, so the troop collaborated with Kathy Beanblossom, the cafeteria manager at Union Elementary, to remove the sporks.

The school had extra silverware from the past that was enough to cover one grade level. The Scouts act as monitors during each lunch period to make sure students are using the silverware and not throwing

it away. They also wear T-shirts periodically that advertise ways to reduce plastic use.

In only seven weeks, Hatcher said the troop has prevented 3,500 sporks from ending up in landfills.

“We’re hoping to continue this pilot program in the fall and then see how it goes with adding another grade,” she said. “Our goal would be to have the whole school using silverware if we can.”

Hatcher said the troop wants to use the profits from cookie sales to purchase silverware for the rest of the school.

Zionsville Community Schools recently earned the Trusted achievement Learning Environment Seal from the Consortium for School Networking. The seal is awarded to school systems that go above and beyond to protect student data privacy. School systems with the seal excel in five areas: leadership, Layton business, data security, professional development and classroom.

“We embarked on this about two years ago knowing the first year we probably weren’t going to be able to get the TLE seal,” said Daniel Layton, ZCS chief technology officer. “As we looked through we knew there were some weak areas we needed to work on, but we really just wanted to show we are taking data privacy very seriously from a security perspective, from a transparency perspective, and protecting all that information that is crucial to operating a school system.”

The application process was an arduous task.

“It was an extensive process. You have to show credible evidence in 25 different areas from the five different subcategories,” Layton said. “It was quite extensive to put together and took us a long time. We sent it in and we received the rubric back saying what we did well in and areas where they thought we could solidify a little more.”

The seal distinction lasts two years, then ZCS has to re-apply.

“We’re continually wanting to improve everything we’re doing,” Layton said. “We know there are a few areas we want to work on ourselves. We hope in two years we’ll receive that seal again, and they’ll say that our rubric scores are even stronger and we’re doing even better work for our students.”

Only five school systems were chosen this year to receive the distinction.

“We’re obviously proud of it, but more so because it was an entire team effort by our technology department,” Layton said. “It makes us feel better about what we’re doing to protect our kids. That’s really where we’re excited.”

ZEF awards spring grants

By Heather Lusk• news@currentzionsville.com The Zionsville Education Foundation awarded $24,749.19 to fund education eight grants during the spring grant cycle. The grants fund programs and teachers within Zionsville Community Schools.

Chief Development Officer Katie Reasoner, who joined ZEF in March, said presenting the grants was the best day of work so far.

“Three or four people were brought to tears,” she said.

ZEF Chief Operating Officer Lyle Browne, who also began in March, was impressed by the process.

“As a donor, you see that you give money and grants are awarded, and it all kind of happens behind the curtain,” she said. “The grants committee is comprised of community members and board members, and to see the amount of thought and discussion that they put into it is really amazing.”

One grant that has potential for reaching every student in every school funded virtual reality headsets that teachers can request from the ZCS IT department.

Browne said the devices give teachers the

ability to take students around the world or even into space.

Tying into the school system's Strong in Every Way initiative, all elementary schools received funding for Mindfulness Training to help students improve attention, enhance emotional regulation skills and reduce stress and anxiety. The program was implemented at Stonegate Elementary earlier this year.

‘Incredibly fortunate’ Zionsville soldier among unit honored for valor on Iraqi battlefields

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Nearly 10 years ago, Tim Stoner’s Medevac unit accomplished many firsts in the state.

“We were Indiana’s first aviation unit that had ever been deployed in combat in any war ever,” Stoner said of his medical evacuation unit. “We were cover story the first Blackhawk (helicopter) and Medevac unit in Indiana. Indiana had sent many soldiers since Sept. 11 (2001), but we had always done combat arms units or military police.”

Stoner, 47, now a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and 307th Medical Brigade executive officer, was in the Indiana Army National Guard for 26 years before switching to the Army Reserves.

At the time of his deployment to Iraq, he was commander of Company C, 2nd Battalion/238th General Support Aviation Battalion, which received a Valorous Unit Award for Extraordinary Heroism in Military Operations Against an Armed Enemy from Aug. 4, 2007, to April 15, 2008. The award is equivalent to the Silver Star for all individuals in the unit. It was awarded in 2009, but the unit didn’t learn about it until approximately three years later. Thus, it drew little attention in Indiana. As Memorial Day nears, Stoner is eager to share his unit’s accomplishments.

The unit had approximately 3,300 combat flight hours, 1,000 combat missions and 1,500 patients evacuated from the battlefields of Iraq.

“We brought everyone home that we took over and we were accident- and incident-free,” said Stoner, who works in cybersecurity for PricewaterhouseCooper. “We were incredibly fortunate.”

Rules of engagement Stoner’s unit consisted of 140 members, with the majority from Indiana. The Medevac aircraft unit has no machine guns aboard, per the laws of the Geneva Conventions. Unit members carry a rifle and a pistol.

The enemy did not follow those rules of engagement.

“We weren’t fighting the national states who signed the accord. We were fighting an insurgency,” Stoner said.

In addition, Stoner said at least 30 percent of the patients they rescued were enemy insurgents.

Bryon Blohm, who lives on the northwest side of Indianapolis, served as the executive officer under Stoner in the unit.

“We had tremendous success,” said Blohm, a major in the Army Reserves. “We had a very skilled team. We had patients on board for up to 2 1/2 hours, covering the distance we had to cover, which is an incredibly long time for patient care to be delivered in the back of the aircraft.”

During his deployment, Tim and Tiffany each wrote blogs and then turned them into a book when he got home. Tiffany and her brother, Nathan Rowe, are co-owners of Nathaniel Edmunds Photography, which supplied the book’s photos.

All proceeds of the book sales of “FamilyPrint” benefit military families.

“It could be for swimming lessons or baseball or whatever the family wants to keep the kids busy while the dad is deployed,” Tim said. “That way the extracurricular activities don’t get canceled because of the financial stress they are under.”

It takes a neighborhood Tiffany Stoner negotiated her husband Tim’s deployment with more than a little help from friends and neighbors.

“When I left, we had four children under age 6, three in diapers, so it was a tough tour for Tiffany as well,” Tim said. “(The spouses) have the hardest piece of the tour, holding the home front down and making sure the kids are all right.”

The Stoners, who have lived in Zionsville since 1999, have two sons, Briggs, now 17, and Gage, 12, and twin daughters Emerson and Campbell, 10.

“Tim challenged me, because he said I would drown before I ask for help, because that’s the type of personality I was,” Tiffany said. “I took the challenge and said, 'You know, this is the point I’ll take whatever help anyone wants to offer.'”

Before Tim left, neighbors tied a yellow ribbon at every house in their Austin Oaks neighborhood.

“I knew then that there was going to be a tremendous amount of help,” Tiffany said. “Everyone knew I had my hands full. That was obvious.”

If neighbors cooked a big dinner, they would bring extra helpings for Tiffany and the kids.

“If there was snow, there was certainly someone out there shoveling my driveway,” Tiffany said. “There was one guy who said he was just going to come over once a month and change the furnace filter.”

Even though the Stoners were not members, Zionsville Presbyterian Church sent someone over in a rotation to stay with the children for 90 minutes during the Bible study session so Tiffany could get some alone time or run errands.

“They would walk in and I’d say, ‘You don’t even need to know their names. Here’s the bottles,’” Tiffany said.

Decisions, decisions Commentary by Terry Anker It is inevitable. Eventually, we are asked to describe what we do. Sometimes, the question comes from a stranger sitting next to us on a plane. Sometimes, it comes from our growing children, just beginning to understand that we have full and complete lives that do not include them. Sometimes, it is a line on a government form.

Dentist. Cowboy. Astronaut. Each of these labels seems succinct enough. But do they really tell us, or anybody, what we do? An astronaut rides a rocket ship into space.

Right? But are they an adventurer, scientist or pilot? Can they be all?

Such is the problem when folks, innocently enough, say to the entrepreneur, “What, exactly, is it that you do?” Well, we build and manage companies. If, one might suppose, an inanimate object can be managed. Maybe said another way, we build and manage people. OK. Experience teaches that much of the entrepreneur’s capacity is consumed by decisions. Certainly, they sell, keep books, clean the floors and all manner of necessary tasks. Yet as a company grows, decision-making may be the singular and exclusive function that cannot be outsourced.

The power of choice, in many ways, is liberating. Directions are set and plans are laid.

Good. But the responsibility accompanying this authority can be burdensome. Are the decisions the right ones?.

With so much at stake, a bit of preparation is warranted, if not required. Then, where do we begin? How do we teach ourselves, our children and our colleagues to value positive choice? One assumes that to be successful, we will need to decide.

Posthaste and hell for leather Commentary by Ward Degler Someone asked me to do something the other day, and then suggested I do it “posthaste.” No way could I let that go unchallenged. What antique chapter of language history did a phrase like “posthaste” come from?

Sixteenth century England, it turns out.

A courier on horseback was called a post.

Delivering an urgent letter back then required galloping through the dark of night and changing horses frequently to get the job done “posthaste.”

We did the same thing later in America and called it the Pony Express. I can’t imagine that any of those hard-riding mailmen ever uttered the phrase, posthaste, however. Maybe to encourage his horse to greater speed if a Comanche war party was hot on his heels.

Shakespeare liked the phrase and used it in a scene from “Richard”: “Old John of Gaunt hath sent post haste to entreat your majesty to visit him.” In another play, Cassio says to Othello, “the Duke requires your post haste appearance.”

Synonyms for posthaste include apace, briskly, double quick, fleetly, chop-chop and hell for leather. Chop-chop comes from Canton Chinese meaning, hurry-hurry.

Canton, of course, was a major Chinese seaport and the eastern terminus of the ancient Silk Road, a mercantile travel route that brought silk and other valuable com-

modities from China and Japan to Europe.

“Chop-chop” itself would probably have never gained a foothold if Canton hadn’t been flooded with English sailors who found the phrase useful. “Hey, sweetheart, bring me another gin and tonic, chop-chop!”

“Hell for leather,” on the other hand, is often confused with hell-bent for leather.

The former refers to an arduous walk through rugged terrain, one that usually destroyed the man’s shoes. Hell-bent for leather refers to a cow that was so hard to handle that the wrangler considered slaughtering it and converting it into leather.

I had a head-strong dog once that made an exasperating career out of escaping our back yard and running away “hell-bent for leather.” I admit that I harbored a few dark thoughts about her future from time to time.

I haven’t heard anyone say posthaste for a long time. And hardly anybody goes hell for leather nowadays. Come to think of it, I don’t remember the last time I heard anyone say chop-chop.

Except when ordering a gin and tonic, of course.

This is not my Mother’s Day. No, I refuse to accept the second Sunday in May as the one day of the year that I am humor to be celebrated. I didn’t vote for it, I don’t like it and so I am calling for a revolution. Moms everywhere, let us unite in strength to reschedule our most precious of days to a time that makes some freakin’ sense. Like a Saturday. In July.

Seriously, how is a mother supposed to enjoy herself during one of the busiest months on the calendar? I spent most of May 14th at Warren Central High School suffering through the second day of a dance competition and attempting to grade a gazillion high school papers, only to come home to a house still destroyed from our Derby party and Doo packing his bags for a business trip. Happy Mother’s Day! We hope you enjoy hours of watching faux-lashed tiny tappers, reading Monica Lewinsky short answers, scrubbing borrowed chafing dishes and prepping for the joys of single-parenting!

No. Thank. You. Between end-of-school shenanigans, end-of-season tournaments and end-of-May race hoopla, no mother in Indiana has even a free second to take time for herself. That is why I propose July, perhaps the third Saturday. Shops and salons are all open, no one is graduating, the weather is almost guaranteed to be beautiful, and apart from those silly families stupid enough to get involved with baseball, kids’ activities are essentially nonexistent.

I wouldn’t even have to feel guilty about skipping church. I could spend an entire day doing whatever I wanted without sacrificing maternal, professional or domestic responsibilities.

Let’s make Mother’s Day great again!

Spell by numbers Commentary by Dick Wolfsie There should be a law against having phone numbers that denote words instead of, well, numbers. Hello, it’s a humor phone number, not a phone word. There’s a national organization dedicated to educating people about a serious illness. Their phone number spells the name of the disease. That makes the number easy to remember, but impossible to dial on your cell phone if you are in the car and have to watch the road, balance your coffee and try to figure out where the PQRS button is.

While trying to dial this number, I almost ran into an 8733, which is “tree” in touchpad language, in case you haven’t mastered this concept yet. I got so mad I probably said a number I shouldn’t say in mixed company: 3687. Before you go running to your phone to figure this out or call the newspaper to complain that I said some dirty digits, I picked four numbers at random that don’t spell anything, but maybe I better go back and re-check. I wouldn’t want any four-number words in a family newspaper.

Suppose I wanted to have a number like I AM DICK. Apparently, those same num-

bers for I AM DICK could spell a lot of other words or letter combinations. Maybe someone else has beaten me to the punch.

I went to www.phonespelling.com, where you can see what words your phone number might spell. That’s where I discovered that 426-3425 (I AM DICK) has almost 10,000 additional letter combinations. Here are some they thought were unforgettable: GAN-E-IJC, BN-EH-AL or IC-MFG-BK. See how much simpler it is to remember seven letters than seven numbers?

If you are from the planet GAMDIA-5, you’d have snapped this number up eons ago to make it easier for fellow aliens to remember how to reach you.

County chamber names director

“As the Boone County Chamber of Commerce executive director, I have the opportunity to advocate Schultz for businesses and collaborate with organizations, schools, town and county officials throughout Boone County, helping our businesses succeed and our communities prosper,” Schultz said. “I look forward to growing the Boone County Chamber and meeting with chamber members to discuss their membership needs, providing resources to address these needs.”

Wellness event coming to creamery

A mix of yoga, music, food and festivities will fill the Blooming Life yoga Wellness Event at Traders Point Creamery in May. The idea began when Blooming Life Yoga owner Lily Kessler recognized unique businesses and services are being created by community members.

Kessler “There are so many really beautiful things that people are doing just out of their own passion,” she said. “Their passion is bringing wellness not only into their own lives and their families but sharing it in the public.”

Being able to share these local businesses with a wider public spurred the idea for Kessler. A family yoga session at

11:30 a.m. will kick off a day of group yoga sessions, ending with kirtan at 1:30 p.m.

Although admission is free, proceeds and donations will be given to Freedom United, which teaches others to recognize human trafficking.

“If we can recognize that, we can be more conscientious consumers, and we can be a voice for the voiceless,” Kessler said.

For the past two years, Blooming Life Yoga has hosted Mats on Main Street, a public yoga class held under the tents traditionally set up the night before the annual Brick Street Market, which necessitated the closing of Main Street.

The town recently decided to eliminate the tents and keep Main Street open the night before the market, but Kessler wanted to continue the tradition of hosting an annual public event.

“We hope that it gets bigger and bigger,” she said.

The wellness event is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 27 at Traders Point Creamery, 9101 Moore Rd., Zionsville.

CSO names new director

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Janna Hymes had a good feeling about her guest conductor stint with the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. music “It felt natural to be in Carmel,” Hymes said. “The Palladium is unbelievable. We just connected and made wonderful music together. Everybody was fantastic. I loved the community and everyone I met with.”

Hymes was announced as the new music director May 12 of the Carmel Symphony Orchestra. She was the last of three guest conductors to audition for the full-time job, appearing April 8 with the CSO. The other finalists to replace David Bowden, whose contract was not renewed, were Kelly Corcoran and Ron Spigelman.

Hymes, who officially starts July 1, said the 2017-18 season was already programmed before she was hired.

“So this is going to be a transitional year where I learn a lot about the orchestra and the community,” she said.

Hymes said announcing goals now would be premature.

“I’ll have a sense by the end of the year, going into 2018 where we want to go,” Hymes

said. “I want to get my feet in there and get going. The most important thing is to have every concert be sensational. I got the impression the board and the orchestra is ready to really grow. I think they are ready to go to another level with another person, so that’s exciting. I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the community and learning more about the area.”

Hymes said she wants to learn what the community wants to hear.

Hymes has served as music director of Williamsburg (Va.) Symphony Orchestra since 2004. She previously was an associate conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Hymes, whose home is in Maine, said the schedules of all three mesh well.

CSO opens the 2017-18 season Oct. 14.

Blueprint for Improvement: Indoor/outdoor living space addition Commentary by Larry Greene

Before Background Info: These owners needed a design/build solution for their home in Zionsville’s The Willows neighborhood to add both indoor and outdoor living space.

After solutions: The goal was to design an addition with a seamless connection from their new indoor living space to their new outdoor living space.

1. The new structure’s proportions and materials were studied to ensure the new addition looked original to the home.

2. From the existing home, the basement was reworked to create an open foyer with a bridge to connect the two spaces on the main level. Two beautiful French doors from the new bridge allow convenient access to the new exterior patio. The new basement stair connects to the existing basement and to the new basement storage under the addition.

3. Large casement windows, a vaulted ceiling, perimeter accent lighting and durable porcelain tile finished off the living space to maximize daylight and inviting aesthetics.

WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Clay Township Regional Waste District heretofore approved plans, specifications and estimates and determined to construct, equip, own, operate and maintain sewage works within an area commonly known as the Cedar Point Subdivision serving lots 1 - 85, and has completed the constructed of the sewage works, and has determined the cost is less than originally estimated; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CLAY TOWNSHIP REGIONAL WASTE DISTRICT, Indiana, that: Section 1. Applicable Fees and Charges.

Every person whose premises, Cedar Point Subdivision serving lots 1 – 85, is to be served by the sewage works of the District shall be charged for the services provided, including a monthly user charge in the amounts and in the manner provided for by the District.

The cost associated with the purchase and installation of the private low pressure pump which includes all apparatuses, lateral assemblies, and the sewer lateral shall be the responsibility of the property owner. These costs are not otherwise included in or covered by this Ordinance.

In addition, every person whose premises, in Cedar Point Subdivision lots 1 - 85, is to be served by the sewage works of the District shall pay the Local Construction Cost of Three Thousand Eighty Six Dollars ($3,086) at such time that said premises is connected to the sewage system of the District or prior to that time. Until paid, the Local Construction Cost shall increase at an annual rate of 2.5% commencing on January 1, 2018 as detailed in Exhibit A. Upon passage of this ordinance, refunds of One Hundred Forty Two Dollars ($142) shall be issued for all property owners who paid the estimated cost of Three Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Eight Dollars ($3,228) before final costs were determined.

Section 2. Connection to Sanitary Sewer.

Connection to the sanitary sewer shall be in compliance with the District’s Sanitary Sewer Connection Policy.

The owner of property that is to be served by the sewage works of the District must pay in full the Local Construction Cost per this ordinance. The owner shall also pay the Equivalent Dwelling Unit (EDU) fee and Inspection fee in effect at the time of the issuance of the permit for connection or prior to that time to lock in at the current ordinance rate.

Section 3. Severability.

The invalidity of any section, clause, sentence, or provision of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of any part of this Ordinance which can be given effect without such invalid part or parts.

Section 5. Effective Date.

This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage.

comprising southern Spain and northwest Africa. In 1147, the Almohads, practicing a more severe form of Islam, conquered Marrakesh and destroyed its mosque. By the end of the 12th century, the Almohads, led by Yaqub Al-Mansur, had completed a new mosque on the site of a destroyed Almoravid palace.

The most famous feature of what became known as the Koutoubia Mosque is its 253-foot-tall sandstone minaret. A wide ramp inside the square minaret enabled the muezzin to ride his horse to the balcony to announce prayer time. The minaret is topped by four gilded copper balls extending from a dome.

An improbable legend says the fourth ball was created from the jewelry of the AlMansur’s wife, taken from her as penance for breaking her Ramadan fast.

The word “Koutoubia” remembers the dozens of book sellers who once plied their trade at the base of the minaret. In the 12th century, when much of Christian Europe was still intellectually asleep, Islamic Marrakesh was an important center of learning. One of the residents of Marrakesh at the time was Averroes, the Spanish genius born in Cordoba in 1126. Averroes’ commentaries on the works of Aristotle, which had been forgotten in the West, were taken back to Europe by visiting scholars, where they eventually formed some of the foundations of the Renaissance.
