Teacher of the year brings the world to her students

Fifteen years ago, when Lindsay Alessandrini began student teaching at Zionsville Community High School, she never Achievement imagined that someday her mentor teacher, Kris Cavolick, would present her with the district’s Teacher of the Year award.

“It was really a nice full circle moment for me,” said Alessandrini, currently a Spanish teacher at ZCHS. “I had learned so much under her mentorship and she really gave me such a great start in teaching.”

Alessandrini was announced as the Zionsville Community Schools 2015 Teacher of the Year at the school board meeting May 11. The top teacher is selected by a group of Zionsville residents who do not currently have children in the district. Alessandrini is now in the running for Indiana Teacher of the Year, which will be announced this fall.

Alessandrini wants her students to be able to experience and use language in ways that are meaningful to them, and she incorporates culture and history along with her language lessons.

“We know with any education, personal interest drives learning,” she said, “so when kids outside of the classroom can latch on to something that they really enjoy, their learning just comes more naturally.”

It’s the personal interest that has led Alessandrini, who lives in Zionsville, to make several trips to Honduras as part of the Indiana group Heart in Education Teacher Outreach. Indiana educators bring supplies that are difficult to find in Honduras to poor rural areas, and then they partner with local teachers to assist with training.

Her eyes light up as she describes providing these students with the basics for learning.

“It’s such a really neat experience,” she said.

“And it’s a great way to practice my Spanish.”

had the opportunity to host an exchange student from Spain while attending high school in Fort Wayne. She then studied in Spain during her junior years of both high school and college before graduating from IU with a major in education with a concentration in Spanish.

Alessandrini feels grateful to the school, the corporation, the families and especially to her students.

“When you love your students then it’s fun and it’s easy watching them taking it in for themselves,” she said,

Missing man found safe – A Zionsville man reported missing May 18 was found safe the next morning by a former associate who picked him up walking along State Road 47.

Robert Schutte, 50, told police he slept in the woods overnight and was distraught over finances. He was taken to the Boone County jail for a Failure to Appear warrant. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office and the Zionsville Police Department partnered with Montgomery Aviation to search for Schutte.

Plant auction – The Zionsville Garden Club will hold its annual plant auction from 10 to 11:30 a.m. June 2 at the Zionsville Town Hall shelter located on the north side. Dairy Queen owner seeking façade updates

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com The owner of Zionsville’s Dairy Queen is hoping to update and modernize the building this summer to comply plan commission with changes that the corporate office would like to see at all stores.

Lee Kleiner, owner of the restaurant on S. 1st St., presented the project to the Zionsville Plan Commission on May 18. Proposed updates

include a fresh coat of paint and a new facade, but some commissioners questioned whether the changes are appropriate for the Village.

“Part of the value of being in Zionsville is the architecture standards we have all businesses apply to,” said commissioner Larry Jones. “Make some attempt to comply with the architectural standards we have, and this doesn’t hit any of them.”

Kleiner requested and received the appointment of a subcommittee to help revise the plans

so an updated project can be presented at the ZPC’s June meeting. He said all renovations need to be complete by Aug. 6 and that his contractor will need five weeks to complete them.

In addition to requests for updates from the corporate office, Kleiner said that a new Dairy Queen is being constructed on Michigan Road that could potentially lure customers from Zionsville. He hopes that updates to the store will encourage them to continue visiting the Zionsville location.

Town hoping to find right buyer for PNC site

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com The Town of Zionsville purchased the site of the former PNC bank building two years ago to ensure part redevelopment of the lot would be available for nearby street improvements. Now that preliminary engineering work on those projects is complete, the town is getting ready to sell the lot – but not to just anyone.

The town is working with a consultant to ensure that the “right” development goes on the site, according to Town Council President Steve Mundy.

“We have contracted with HWC Engineering to assist the town in facilitating a series of design visualization meetings and associated work in order to … solicit proposals for development,” Mundy said. “This work will utilize the charrette process and include a number of parties that represent varied and key input.”

Those invited to participate include representatives from the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, Zionsville Economic Development Commission, Zionsville Redevelopment Development Commission, Zionsville Town Council, The Village Resident’s Association and the Zionsville Plan Commission.

Dates for the stakeholder meetings have not been set, but the public will be welcome to attend. The meetings are expected to take place in June and July, with a final presentation to the Town Council expected in August or September.

While the town isn’t planning to hold on to the land, finding the right buyer is key for

many reasons, Mundy said. The site is in an extremely visible location, and its parking lot is home to the Zionsville Farmer’s Market in the summer.

“A new owner could easily have other plans and a deed restriction prohibiting another bank meant [the Farmer’s Market] would not be possible,” Mundy said.

Upgrades planned at interchange

By Chris Bavender • news@currentzionsville.com INDOT has given Whitestown the green light on plans to add lanes to the interchange at Whitestown transportation Parkway and I-65, which is expected to reduce congestion in the area.

The upgrade will add two free-flowing right turn lanes to the north bound exit ramp for commuters coming home from Indianapolis during the evening commute and two left turn lanes to the bridge for commuters heading south to Indianapolis for the morning commute.

Debbie Calder, INDOT communications manager for the Crawfordsville District, agreed that congestion was the key issue for the agency signing off on the work.

“Whitestown demonstrated that traffic on their street, Whitestown Parkway, was congested during various times,” Calder said.

“The project is a low-cost solution to the immediate issue of congestion on Whitestown Parkway.”

The Whitestown and Zionsville town councils passed resolutions in the summer of 2014 urging INDOT to upgrade the interchange but were told by the state agency that the project

was not included in the 10-year funding plan.

Whitestown decided to search for another option and used town resources to design a plan that could be implemented in the short term.

Whitestown also proposed a plan to fund the entire $1.6 million project through a tax increment financing bond. With approvals, the bond is expected to close in mid-July with construction beginning as soon as September.

Town official will also continue to work with its partners at INDOT, he said, for a complete reconstruction of the interchange within the next five years.

Walk through town parks with Tails on the Trails

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Zionsville is encouraging dog owners to leash up their pets and experience the town’s parks and pathsummer program ways this summer through the inaugural Tails on the Trails event. The program, which runs throughout June and July, features walks to complete alone or during a town-scheduled group outing through eight different parks.

Once the walks are complete and recorded, participants receive a Tails on the Trails bandana and are entered into a drawing to win a year’s supply worth of dog food from Platinum Paws. The walks range in length from .4 to 3.6 miles.

Mindy Murdock, park naturalist and Zionsville Nature Center manager, is coordinating the event. She will also be participating with two of her three dogs.

“I see a lot of people walking their dogs in the parks, and we often overlook people out there enjoying nature and parks with the family pet,” Murdock said. “This is a way to celebrate them and get them involved.”

Registration is free and ongoing through the end of June. The event capacity is 100

dogs, and there is still plenty of space available. Murdock said she hopes to see 30 to 40 dogs and their owners participate in the event’s first year.

Participants may register at the Zion Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Registration is also available at Akard True Value Hardware during normal business hours. Upon registering, participants will receive a “Wag Bag” that contains a “Paws-Port” to record all the walks they complete, dog treats and a variety of other materials.

Church to install Marian shrine

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Art and religion have always gone hand in hand. St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church has reached out to renowned Italarts ian artist Carl Moroder to create a Marian shrine for parishioners to venerate the Virgin Mary. Moroder is known for using ancient techniques to hand carve Lindenwood sculptures.

“It’s not only a religious shrine to help the parish grow spiritually but also if you’re an artist you’re going to want to see Carl Moroder’s work,” said Nancy McKee, Marian Shrine committee chair and parishioner.

SALCC’s shrine will feature a large, handcarved representation of the image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Church officials are not yet releasing renderings of the sculpture or indicating where it will be located.

The hand-carved statue will stand at about five feet tall and behind her will be reliefs of 20 different holy women and two archangels, Michael and Gabriel. The artwork will be created in Italy and then shipped to the U.S. “In a lot of older churches they already have a devotional area for our lady. Ours is a rather modern church so we didn’t have it built in like a lot of other churches,” McKee

said. “It has been a vision of Father [Dennis] O’Keeffe’s to get a Marian Shrine since 2004.”

The church will host a dedication of the artwork after the 5:30 p.m. mass on Aug. 1, the anniversary of St. Alphonsus Liguori’s death.

“To have the shrine dedicated on St. Alphonsus’ peace day is going to be very big,” McKee said.

Orphans safe after earthquakes

By Michelle Williams news@currentzionsville.com After the first devastating earthquake hit Nepal weeks ago, Youth Enhancement and Training Initiative philanthropy President Jeff Papa was relieved to learn that the 26 children who live at the orphanage supported by his organization were safe. The second, more recent quake left a new crack in the wall at the orphanage, but also left the children unharmed. For the time being, they are sleeping outside in tents until the building can be inspected for structural safety.

Papa, who is also a Zionsville town councilor, is unsure what the timeline might be for inspection.

“We’re leaving it up to the locals to worry about more pressing matters.” he said. He explained that the tropical environment in Nepal is warm enough at night for the children to sleep outside, and they can also find shelter in the orphanage’s one-story cafeteria building in the case of stormy weather.

The newly paved path behind Pleasant View Elementary officially opened for use May 6 and is now safer than achievement ever for bikes, thanks to the students in Kasey Cope’s second grade class. Her students became the first to use the new path, carefully fastening on helmets before taking a few laps at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The project, known as Bike Your Way to Safety, started after Cope attended a conference about project-based learning, a teaching method that encourages students to learn about real-world problems and think critically to solve them.

PVE students decided to use project-based learning to find a way to make the mulch bike path behind the building safer. A class-wide vote decided that the material of choice for the new path should be concrete.

With a clear goal in mind, Cope’s students grabbed their rulers and calculators and got to work, first measuring the path and then doing

the math to figure out how much the project would cost. The class came up with a total of $8,000, bringing them to the next step: applying for grants.

“Writing grants (was my favorite part),” said John Bailey, a student in Cope’s class. “I think we wrote five.”

Students worked hard to prepare presentations for each grant, and they earned enough grant money to cover the cost of the project.

The school now has a path that’s safer for bikes, but that’s not the project’s only success. “(We’re) trying to get other teachers in the district to take the risk to try PBL,” Cope said.

Bus drivers take a test run

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Dave Barthelmes took the wheel of a school bus for the first time May 16. He was one of nine people to test transportation drive one of the massive vehicles at Zionsville Community Schools’ Community Day at the Transportation Center.

“I was interested to see how it feels to drive one and see if it’s something I’m interested in,” Barthelmes said. “It’s a little intimidating at first. You just have to drive it, it’s like anything else.”

The day was set to try to recruit candidates for bus drivers, as the district is facing a shortage of them next school year because of retirement, out-of-state moves and other reasons.

Barthelmes, 61, was curious if it might be a good fit when he retires from his current job.

The Zionsville resident said this was an excellent way to learn about the job.

“You can get a lot done in a short period of time,” Barthelmes said. “It’s more of a relaxed atmosphere. You’re not sitting in a room, asking questions.”

ZCS transportation director Amy Eaton said they are looking to fill six to 10 driving spots for the fall.

“It’s been pretty successful for the first time we’ve done it,” Eaton said.

Susan Cleary, of the ZCS human resources department, said the event allowed staff members to discuss the application process one-on-one. ZCS pays $10 during training and then pay is $16.75 per hour during the probationary period. The average work week is 25 hours with a potential for more hours with field trips.

Let’s talk about prunes. No fruit has ever been more maligned, and none warrants a wink and a smirk more than Plain talk prunes.

Face it, when we think of prunes, we think of old folks and their inherent digestive concerns. “Have you had your prunes today, Grandpa?” (wink-wink, smirk-smirk).

Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding these tasty fruits has all but obliterated the fact that prunes are also one of the most healthful foods on the planet. A study funded

by Tufts University, for example, listed prunes as the number one antioxidant found anywhere, containing more than twice the antioxidant capacity of blueberries or raisins.

This is mostly because of the high levels of phenolic acids. I never took chemistry, but I did read somewhere that these acids are also known to slow the aging process.

Now, let’s deal with the wink-wink side of prunes. Fact: prunes keep you regular, and if you do get knotted up from time to time, they fix the problem and get you back on track.

There are two reasons for this. They have a high concentration of dietary fiber, and they are loaded with sorbitol, a substance that kick starts peristalsis, the internal process that keeps things moving.

Mom used to feed us prunes with breakfast. She stewed them in a small amount of water, making them softer and easier to eat.

Looking back, I have to say they worked (wink, wink).

As good as they are, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an advertising campaign for prunes.

I heard years ago that the California Fruit Growers Assn. tried to run a sweepstakes promoting prunes once but had to cancel because the materials would have required the phrase, “Void where prohibited.” (I didn’t make this up.)

More recently, a national ad agency apparently made some gains with a startling discovery: While nobody likes prunes, everybody likes dried fruit. The ad guys simply changed the label from Prunes to Dried Plums.

That’s all well and good. But, they’re still prunes (wink, wink, smirk, smirk).

Camp inspires innovation

A unique summer camp designed to teach kids self-esteem, teamwork and goal setting skills is once again summer break coming to Boone County. Camp Invention is a weeklong program for students entering first through sixth grades supported by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Its goal is to foster innovation and creativity.

“The thing I like best about Camp Invention is that kids are free to try new ideas, make mistakes and explore in ways they aren’t able to during the school year,” said Darren Hale, a director for the camp, and a fifth grade science teacher at Zionsville West Middle School.

Camp Invention reaches out to qualified educators such as Hale in the local area to act as instructors.

“These talented individuals are selected for their abilities to excite and motivate children and their enthusiasm for creative learning,” said Annie Miller, communications coordinator for Camp Invention.

Gymnast finds national success

Mariacher, a 15-yearachievement old Zionsville resident, earned fourth place on the beam, eighth on the vault and 11th in the all-around competition in the Senior I division of the Junior Olympics Level 9 Eastern Championships in Kissimmee, Fla., on May 9.

“I really want to make it next year,” she said. “The competition was good, and everyone on the team was really encouraging. I did as well as I was hoping to do. I did place a little higher than I thought I would on the beam. The best part was the team and the coaches were fun to be around.”

Mariacher was the only member from Sharp’s Gymnastics Academy in Indianapolis at the competition. She said she knew a few girls at the competition but most she hadn’t met before.

Mariacher qualified for the national meet by finishing fifth in the all-around division in the regional in Youngstown, Ohio, in April.

She has been in gymnastics for 10 years.

Beam is her favorite event, she said.

“It’s fun to be part of a team,” Mariacher said of competing in gymnastics. “It’s challenging but you still have fun.”

Mariacher, who will be a sophomore in the fall, has been home schooled for several years. She trains Monday through Saturday at Sharp’s, usually for about four hours each day.

“I would like to get a college scholarship,” she said of her career gymnastics goal.

‘Crash Gladys’ relishes annual trip back home for Indy 500

By Michelle Williams • news@currentzionsville.com In Zionsville she’s known as Christy Clutter, but her hometown is one of the few places where people know her real name.

Cover story To the rest of the nation she’s Crash Gladys, Crasher or Crash for short. Crash Gladys is Clutter’s on-air radio personality. She and her husband can be heard on the weekly Fox Sports Radio show SpeedFreaks and daily in the Phoenix market on The Freaks with Kenny and Crash.

Clutter, 42, describes herself as a spitfire who takes her sports opinions to the extreme and likes to incite heated debates for entertainment value. Her forte is motor sports, and it all started with a lifelong love for the Indianapolis 500 that she shares with her family.

A 1990 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, Clutter’s father worked as the assistant medical director for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until he suddenly died in an automobile accident when she was only 4 years old. Her mother, Linda Wolff, kept the family tradition and her kids’ connection to their father alive through the Indy 500.

“Racing got in my blood real early because of my dad’s involvement,” Clutter said.

Racing to the top Clutter credits her education at ZCHS with preparing her for a career in entertainment. She was involved in a variety of activities in high school, including the Royalaires, drama, dancing and musicals. After graduating from Indiana University in 1994, she landed a job with Dick Simon Racing – later renamed Team Scandia. In 1997, she was hired onto PacWest Racing and held positions relating to marketing, hospitality and sponsorship development.

In 1999 Clutter moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, but her interests and skills collided when her agent approached her about a position with a new motor sports radio show. She auditioned with a man named Kenny Wolfard, who would hire her and eventually become her husband. She and Wolfard – better known on-air as Kenny Sargent – began working together on the show SpeedFreaks in 2001, and two years ago, they moved to Phoenix to start up their daily all-sports show.

Although Crash Gladys is well-known among racing personalities, she does not consider herself a media celebrity.

“Everyone has unique opportunities and they just need to reach out and grab them,” Clutter said. “All I am is someone who gets to talk on the radio every once in a while and get paid for it.”

“Indy cars are rocket ships,” she said. “You have to be so precise with your placement on the track. It’s a whole different mentality that intrigues me.”

Andrew Carroll, Clutter’s race photographer and fellow ZCHS graduate, said his friend always returns to her roots for the Indianapolis 500.

“May is special to Christy and always will be,” Carroll said. “Since she has moved to LA and Pheonix, she hasn’t missed the Indy 500 and a get-together with friends and family during the month. I can’t remember a time we haven’t gotten together for laughs and great times.”

She’ll be back in Zionsville again later in the summer for her 25th high school reunion.

“My friends from middle and high school are still my friends now,” Clutter said. “A lot of people can’t say that, and I feel fortunate.”

When visiting, she simply prefers hanging out at her friends’ houses for pool parties or basement parties.

“But if I’m home for at least a week, I’m likely to end up at The Friendly at least one night,” she said. “You always run into someone you know at The Friendly.”

Zionsville will always hold a special place in Clutter’s heart, as it’s one of the few places where people still call her Christy instead of Crash – and she hopes to keep it that way.

Meet Crash Gladys • Favorite pastime: Well, this has changed a bit now that I’m a mom. It used to be gardening. But now I’d say any alone time I can get with my husband and daughter is my favorite pastime, since that time is so rare.

• Favorite color: Red! Indiana Hoosiers red!

• Favorite vacation: The only vacation spot we can go to and not have to really worry about anything and not have an agenda of what to do each day is our condo on South Padre Island, Texas.

• Car she’s driving: Lexus RX 330 • Most DVR’d TV show: That’s a toss-up between Grey’s Anatomy, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel and House of Lies.

Well, there you are, Mr. Candidate! No sooner do we accuse Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) of losing his bluster (Current, May 12) than does he release this gem about President Barack Obama (D-White House) and trade initiatives: “I’ve said that the only way I would give fasttrack trade authority to a president was if it was a president that could actually … negotiate well, and after watching the way this president has negotiated with folks in Iran, I have real concerns about giving this president the ability to negotiate on his own.” As do we.

With regard to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Donald Trump (R-You Name It), in a joint statement with Americans for Limited Government, offered: “Instead of fast-tracking TPP, Congress should pass legislation that holds China and Japan accountable for currency manipulation.”

The U.S. Senate was scheduled to vote last week to advance the legislation. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-Ark.), with whom we don’t side on much, scored points with us on this: “We don’t create good jobs for Americans by entering into unbalanced trade deals that forego congressional scrutiny, and then looking the other way as the law is ignored so that we can import low-wage labor, undercut American workers, and drive wages lower than the Dead Sea.” Are the Republicans showing some fire? Yes. Will it last? We doubt it. Listen to Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.): “I am not for giving more authority to a president who ignores the Constitution, the separation of powers, and will of the American people. This particular President must not be given any more power to do anything else to harm this country. He cannot be trusted.” Really. Can anyone?

Status cities

We humans care about status. A lot.

Archeologist excavating ancient Sumerian (centuries before Christ) communities, discovered necklaces of sea shells harvested hundreds of miles from the graves. It points to the likelihood that commerce has been with us from the very foundations of society – yes. But too, it indicates the desirability of prestige from our earliest civilized moments.

While some of us have become highly adept at concealing it, one would be hardpressed to find any among us who is immune to its allure. Sure, not everyone covets a red sports car or diamond ring of epic proportions; but if the consideration of status is imagined beyond the limits of precious metals, our obsession with it becomes clearer.

Some find the performance of our children to be status enhancing (perhaps extinguishing). Others care deeply about personal command of Holy Scripture. Oth-

ers still find appearance to be the currency of their own relative standing.

The last few years have been tough on California. Yet friends from certain communities cling to an almost antithetical boastful superiority. Can it be that the city of our residency is just another status tool? Are you really smarter and better if your zip code includes the Silicon Valley? And, does keeping Portland weird and Austin interesting actually point to an underlying desire toward superior status rather than the stated open-mindedness?

“If you are not from my town, you cannot be as cool as me.” Maybe. Or, maybe not.

Even as we are wisely investing in our own communities, we should be reminded – is our objective to achieve a better quality of life or to grab a little more status?

Fellow moms of this planet, our day has come and gone. We must wait a whole ‘nother year to feel loved and appreciated, to receive ceramic pencil holders humor and pasta necklaces and to earn an eight-hour reprieve from dishes and laundry. This most recent Mother’s Day differed dramatically from my first, when morning sickness kept me close to cold tiled floors, although interestingly, the same kid is to blame! Let’s pause to ponder the evolution of your favorite columnist’s Mother’s Days, shall we?

In the first few years, I can’t say I looked forward to the second Sunday in May. I hadn’t yet learned how to articulate my expectations, and more often than not ended up covered in vomit or baby poop as I cried myself to sleep. No flowers, no shopping, no mimosas. MD was just like any other day with four small children: mind-numbing, lonely and exhausting.

Shortly into 2005, realization dawned. All I needed to do was leave the house and not return until nightfall. My husband Doo knew how to open a can of Spagettios, change a diaper and dial 911; I was a moot point! So my annual sojourn morphed into a twelveto-fourteen hour guilt-free “Me Spree,” that included malls, movies, manicures and McDonald’s. And on the two occasions when illness or family commitments hijacked my “moment,” I simply called a “redo.” If I only get one day, dammit, it will happen, come hell or high fever.

Over the last few years however, I’ve felt the urge to spend Mother’s Day closer to home. I still go to brunch with friends and do a little bargain hunting, but I’m usually back before dinner to enjoy mandatory “Be Nice to Mom” time with my minions. And even though this year didn’t quite play out as I’d hoped – receiving a call in Stein Mart from your newly-licensed driver after he’s caused a fender-bender dampens the mood somewhat – I did appreciate the opportunity to pamper myself while it lasted.

Here’s wishing you a belated Happy Mother’s Day. [Seriously, he’d had his license for four days!] Peace out.

Our takes on steak: Best of the Northside

While many places restaurants have the word “steakhouse” in their name as an obvious indication of what they’re trying to advocate, there are places that sometimes might get overlooked.

Certainly there is a collection of names that come to mind in Indianapolis and the surrounding area when one thinks of the best steakhouse in town, but for those who wish to venture from the “standard” in the steak game, consider these choices for your next steak.

With the bold declaration of being “Carmel’s only Prime steak house,” Prime 47 is a force to be reckoned with. What sets it apart from its Indianapolis and Cincinnati locations is that it’s locally owned and operated, separate from the aforementioned. This gives it a unique

As for the steak, my recommendation is the dry-aged Kansas City strip, cooked to your liking. The dry-aged process offers exceptional flavor boosting the tenderness and texture of the meat. Lightly seasoned with salt, pepper and a touch of garlic and thyme, this is a great steak. Try it by itself or with one of Prime’s decadent toppings.

While some readers may recall Murphy’s Steakhouse, now Murphy’s @ Flynn’s is off Allisonville Road in Indianapolis, and in Fishers is Murphy’s Pubhouse. A younger brother of the Indy location, the pubhouse is a laid-back bistro that sports similar style family owned values as Murphy’s @ Flynn’s, but in a relaxed pub atmosphere. With three generations of family in the restaurant business, Murphy’s Pubhouse owner/manager Ryan Stonebraker has a simple philosophy: it’s all about satisfying the customer.

“We just treat everybody right and that comes back to helping us in the end,” Stonebraker said.

My recommendation would be the filet, Oscar style. That’s a juicy filet mignon topped with a delicious crab cake, drizzled in a Chardonnay cream sauce. It truly compliments the steak.

Pair that with a baked potato and you’re set.

Secluded on the back roads of Zionsville you’ll find something of a gem in the form of a farm-to-table style restaurant.

Located at the headquarters of Trader’s Point Creamery is The Loft. What makes this place so special is its adamant approach to providing customers with the most organic foods that you can get your hands on.

Heading the kitchen is Brandon Canfield, a true culinary inspiration that goes out of his way to ensure nothing is wasted.

The menu varies by availability, but when in stock the filet is a sure win. During my visit I was served the pan-roasted, grass-fed strip loin. The grass-fed beef provides a steak experience unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. The natural flavors weren’t flooded by fat, as found in a standard steak.

Delicious.

Many connoisseurs of steak probably have heard of the famed St. Elmo’s steakhouse downtown. And while some may say it tops the chart, it’s more contemporary counterpart, Harry and Izzy’s on 86th Street near Clearwater, deserves just as much respect as its upscale equal.

Heading the kitchen at both St. Elmo’s and Harry and Izzy’s is executive chef Dave Foegley. Sourcing its beef out of Illinois, Foegley ensures that only the best beef they can acquire makes it to the table.

Grilled Eggplant with Caramelized Onion and Fennel Ingredients: 1 (1 1/4-pound) eggplant (about 4-inch diameter), peeled, Cooking spray, 1/4 teaspoon salt, divided, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided, 2 3/4 cups chopped fennel bulb (about 1 large bulb), 2 cups finely chopped yellow onion, 2 cups trimmed arugula, 1 teaspoon white balsamic vinegar, 1 teaspoon extravirgin olive oil, 1 cup quartered cherry tomatoes, 1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese, 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme Directions: Prepare grill to medium heat. Cut eggplant crosswise into eight (1/2-inch-thick) slices. Lightly coat both sides of eggplant slices with cooking spray; sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Place on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill seven minutes on each side or until browned. Set eggplant slices aside. Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Add fennel and onion; sauté eight minutes or until vegetables are tender and lightly browned. Combine remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, arugula, vinegar and oil in a medium bowl; toss gently to coat. Divide arugula mixture evenly among eight appetizer plates; top each serving with one eggplant slice. Arrange about 1/3 cup fennel mixture on each eggplant slice; top with 2 tablespoons tomatoes and 1 tablespoon cheese. Sprinkle the chopped basil and thyme evenly over cheese.

Celebrate summer with steak Commentary by Ceci Martinez One of my favorite holidays is Memorial Day. Not only do we celebrate the beginning of long and relaxing summer days, but it is also a day to honor our heroes and their families. Let’s fly our flags and enjoy these flavorful steak tacos cooked over an open fire.

STEAK TACOS WITH CUCUMBER AVOCADO SALSA Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1 tablespoon chili powder, 2 cloves garlic, minced, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, Pinch of cayenne pepper, 1 1/4 pounds top sirloin steaks, 12 corn tortillas, 3 cups shredded red cabbage, 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro, 1 lime cut into wedges Directions: Preheat the grill or coat a large non-stick skillet with cooking spray and preheat it over medium- high heat. In a small bowl, stir together the chili powder, garlic, cinnamon, salt and cayenne. Rub the mixture into both sides of the steaks. Cook the steaks on the grill or skillet for five minutes per side, turning once for medium

rare or to desired doneness. Remove from heat; let the meat rest for five minutes. Cut into thin slices. Wrap in a kitchen towel to keep them warm. Place the cut steak onto tortillas and spoon the cucumber avocado salsa on top.

CUCUMBER AVOCADO SALSA Ingredients: 1 medium English cucumber, seeded and diced (about 2 cups), 2 medium firm-ripe avocados, diced, 1/2 red onion, diced, Juice of 2 limes (about 1/4 cup), Salt to taste, 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, 1 teaspoon jalapeño pepper, seeded and finely chopped Directions: Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and toss gently. Let it sit for 30 minutes to let salsa marinade.

Summer options for disabled kids Commentary by Catherine M. Michael, JD As summer quickly approaches many parents begin making summer plans for camps, academic enrichment and relaxation. programs Parents of children with disabilities can often struggle to find what is available for their child and sometimes feel like they don’t have many choices.

For summer academics, parents need to be aware of Extended School Year options through their child’s public school. Extended School Year is a legal requirement under the special education laws including Article 7 and IDEA. Extended School Year is different than summer school. If your child has a history of regression then this may be a necessary component of your summer plans. Parents need to be clear at their child’s IEP meeting this spring that their child does need summer services based on their child’s needs and history. Summer services can be specifically tailored to what that child needs and parents should not be afraid to ask for these necessary services.

There are also a variety of centers throughout Indianapolis and Carmel that provide

summer day programming for children with autism or other challenges. For instance the Applied Behavior Center in Carmel offers parttime to full-time summer programming that may be covered by your insurance for children with autism. The Dyslexia Institute of Indiana located in Indianapolis offers some fantastic camps for students struggling with dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and offer day programs to teen camps. Noble of Indiana offers Day Camps for children with and without disabilities. Easter Seals Summer camp offers a variety of day programming options in our area as well. For children with asthma, Happy Hollow Child’s Camp sponsors a weeklong program this summer.

With 2,912 pended sales in April in Central Indiana, overall year-to-date home sales are up 8.9 percent compared real estate to this time period last year, according to statistics compiled by F.C. Tucker Company. On a monthly basis, April 2015 pended home sales rose 0.2 percent compared to April 2014, a modest increase of six homes sold in the nine counties that F.C. Tucker tracks.

In Boone County, pended home sales slipped 7.3 percent to 331 homes from 357 homes for the first four months of this year compared to the same time period last year.

• Zionsville has experienced an uptick in sales. Last month, 51 homes pended, a modest increase of three homes compared to April 2014.

• Year-to-date home prices in Zionsville continue to rise. The average price spiked 6.8 percent to $370,796 from $374,188 last year.

• Of the pended home sales in Zionsville

last month, 15 were priced $500,000 to $999,999; 23 were priced $300,000 to $499,999; eight were priced $200,000 to $299,999; and five were priced $100,000 to $199,999.

• The pace of home sales in Zionsville is steady. Last month, homes sold in 82 days on average which is on par with April 2014’s pace.

Jericho, in the Palestinian Territories, is best known as the city where Joshua “fit the battle” and the “walls come travel tumblin’ down.” Archaeologists cannot confirm that famous Biblical story, but did unearth a tower that held a world’s record for more than 5,000 years.

Located in the Judean Desert, Jericho is known as the “City of Palms” because of its lush landscape, watered by underground springs. Nomads attracted by the springs founded Jericho in about 10,000 B.C., creating one of the world’s first permanent settlements. By about 9,400 B.C. the residents of Jericho erected the world’s first city walls, protecting themselves from hungry thieves.

Archaeologists have uncovered more than 20 successive Jericho settlements, each built over the ruins of the one before, eventually creating a six-acre tell (mound) of dirt and rubble.

In the 1930s, John Garstang, an archaeologist excavating at Jericho, uncovered walls that had suddenly collapsed, which he believed demonstrated the truth of the Biblical account. In the 1950s, Dame Kathleen Kenyon, a British archaeologist, made a systematic

study of Jericho’s walls and concluded that they had fallen, perhaps as the result of an earthquake, hundreds of years before the presumed date of Joshua’s battle. She also concluded that Jericho was not occupied at the time of Joshua. Subsequent investigations have confirmed her conclusions, which few scholars now challenge.

During her excavations, Dame Kenyon found a cylindrical stone tower about 26 feet high and 28 feet in diameter just inside the oldest Jericho walls. The tower, incorporating an internal stairway, has been dated to at least 8,000 B.C., making it perhaps the world’s

oldest man-made structure. Archaeologists originally thought the tower had defensive or irrigation functions, but recent studies suggest it marked the summer solstice. Whatever its purpose, the Jericho tower remained the tallest man-made structure in the world until about 2650 B.C., when it was surpassed by the stepped pyramid of Djoser in Egypt.

Contemporary master bathroom with Lake Views Commentary by Larry Greene EXISTING BATHROOM: The owners of this 1975 home, located on Eagle Creek Reservoir, had lived with their out-of-date master bathroom for nearly four blueprint for years. “We bought this house for the improvement breathtaking views of the lake, but the inside didn’t reflect our style. The layout didn’t work. It felt dark, the shower was too small and the humidity and moisture from the lake was ruining our clothes.”

BATHROOM DESIGN ELEMENTS: “We wanted to transform our bathroom into a spacious, serene and contemporary space.” To achieve this look, three existing rooms including the hall bath, master closet and master bath were combined to create one large open space. The bathroom now features an enclosed wardrobe closet, an open dressing area, a larger shower, a private water closet, a sleek floating vanity and freestanding tub.

FREE-STANDING TUB: To preserve the scenic view of the lake from the bathroom window, the tub remained in the same location. The owners selected a Victoria & Albert free-standing tub to compliment the new
