Ertel named Teacher of Year Compiled by Sara Baldwin • sara@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees met May 14 to recognize the Teacher of the Year, discuss the Strong in Every Way initiative and vote on upgrades to the HVAC system.

What happened: Zionsville Community Schools announced Zionsville Middle School’s Amy Ertel as Teacher of the Year.

What it means: Each school principal worked with staff to choose one Teacher of the Year.

“Amy has spent 17 years with the professional mission to empower students to be independent thinkers, writers, readers, historians and humans,” ZCS Community Relations Coordinator Lynn Kissel said.

What’s next: Ertel is now a nominee for the Indiana State Teacher of the Year.

The winner is expected to be announced in the fall.

What happened: The board of trustees approved the purchase of grounds equipment totaling more than $30,000 and HVAC equipment totaling $2.5 million.

What it means: The purchase of a specialized flatbed trailer up to $12,000 passed unanimously. Also unamiously passsed was the purchase of a specialized machine for field upkeep, used for aerating turf and grating and leveling clay on baseball fields. The machine also can assist in snow removal. The cost was $18,401. Consideration of 2018 HVAC project bids was presented by Victor Landfair, vice president of The Skillman Corp. Skillman recommended nearly $2.5 million for plumbing and heating of multiple ZCS facilities. The expenditure, encompassing a series of ongoing HVAC updates, passed unopposed.

What happened: Amanda Slonaker provided a year-end update on the Strong In Every Way initiative. Students presented what they learned from the SIEW pilot series.

What it means: The Strong In Every Way initiative encompasses three main domains - developing connections with students, assets and resources and cultural understandings. The SIEW pilot series focused on The Five Traits of Success: ethics, compassion, wellness, confidence and determination.

A Zionsville man was arrested May 16 for allegedly lying to police about not being the driver in a crash that killed his friend in October 2016.

PUBLIC SAFETY Jack H. Kaplan, 22, is facing 10 charges – including reckless homicide, failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death and obstruction of justice — as a result of a single-vehicle accident that occurred on CR 300 S west of US 421 leading to the death Kaplan of 21-year-old James Dupler.

Police said they found several inconsistencies in Kaplan’s version of the event and that DNA analysis and Dupler’s autopsy pointed to Kaplan being the driver of his Ford Explorer at the time of the crash. Kaplan’s blood alcohol concentration was believed to be between .116 and .190 at the time of the crash, Dupler according to a probable cause affidavit.

The Boone County FACT reconstruction crash report states that “Jack Kaplan removed Mr. Dupler from the front passenger seat of the Ford Explorer ultimately leaving him lying on the ground near the driver’s side of the vehicle dying.”

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, investigators determined that Kaplan was on the scene for nearly an hour before emergency responders arrived to find Dupler on the ground near the driver’s side door. The probable cause affidavit states that Kaplan’s first call was to his father, David Kaplan, and that his father was on the scene 20 minutes before emergency responders arrived.

The affidavit states that shortly before the crash Kaplan and Dupler had been watching a Chicago Cubs game and drinking at the Stacked Pickle on 106th Street and Michigan Road. It states that Kaplan then drove to a nearby Marsh — although he initially said that Dupler was driving — where Dupler bought bourbon.

Kaplan told investigators he was in the driver’s seat when leaving Marsh but after driving 10 feet asked Dupler to take the wheel, the affidavit states. It also states store surveillance footage did not capture the area where the vehicle was parked.

Investigators believe the crash occurred approximately seven minutes after the vehicle left the Marsh parking lot.

When emergency responders arrived nearly an hour later, they found Dupler bleeding on the ground, “unresponsive with agonal respirations and actively vomiting,” the affidavit states. They transported him to St. Vincent hospital where he later died.

Dupler’s family released a statement May 16.

“Our family would like to sincerely thank the tireless efforts of the Boone County investigative team in finding the truth and honoring James’ memory,” it states. “There is hope in Jesus and a measure of peace in knowing the truth. We would also like to thank our family, friends and Traders Point Christian Church for their love and continued prayers of support.”

Kaplan has an initial court appearance set for May 25.

Mobile home park residents take cleanup into own hands

By Sara Baldwin • sara@youarecurrent.com When help from the town and their landlord seemed unlikely, residents of the Zionsville Mobile Home Park at 9111 HOUSING East CR 600 South decided to take matters into their own hands by hosting a community cleanup day May 12.

“It may not be our place to keep this park up, but we live here and we take pride in our community. Sometimes you have to do things for yourself,” said Benny Louden, who organized the cleanup day along with Mary Ann Shepherd, a park resident since 2004.

Louden, a park resident since 2006, regularly mows many of the lawns in the park.

During the cleanup event, he organized landscaping and power-washed several trailers.

Zionsville Mobile Home Park owner Laura Lei has faced legal action in the past several years regarding a failed septic system and other issues. In January 2017, Boone Circuit Court Judge Justin Hunter ruled that more than a dozen tenants must move out of the park after a visit from Boone County Health Dept. deemed parts of the park unlivable because of a failing septic system.

Many of the abandoned properties have since become overgrown. Residents of the park are concerned that if they don’t clean the place up themselves, they will be forced to relocate.

“This place has not been taken care of,” said Brian Stocker, a resident of the park since 2008. “We just do it ourselves, unless it’s a water issue.”

Shepherd, Louden, Stocker and others said they wish Lei would take action and restore the park to its full occupancy.

“We don’t want to sit on our decks looking at abandoned homes,” Shepherd said.

When reached by phone, Lei said she has done her share to try to get the park in working condition and cleaned up the sewage-contaminated site as she was ordered by the court. Lei said she has paid the fees and is waiting on the (town) to repair the septic issue so that her license to operate, which she lost in 2015, can be renewed.

“I do not want the park to close,” Lei said. “People should not have to lose their homes.”

Louden said many people in the community have said the same to him.

“We are holding out, trying to save this park,” Louden said. “Now businesses are on board. People are telling us that they don’t want this park to close and they are on our side. The mayor has assured us that he has no plans to close the park.”

Amanda Vela, a spokeswoman for the Town of Zionsville, said the town sent feedback on the repair plans to the mobile home engineer and is awaiting resubmitted plans with corrections and payment of a fee for the review.

ZUMC burns mortgage

By Anna Skinner anna@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville United Methodist Church congregation gathered on the church’s front lawn recently for a mortgageFAITH burning ceremony. The event celebrated the church becoming debt-free after paying $8 million for its mortgage since breaking ground in 2000.

“We are really grateful for all that has happened here over the many years,” Rev. Glenn Howell said during the ceremony.

“One of the things we know is that people who are the most generous are people who have felt God in their life. People who know that God has given to them have such gratitude.”

Howell, a former senior pastor of the church, said money can now be directed to different ministries within ZUMC, such as the children’s ministry, the Ten Point Coalition or Mission Guatemala.

“We have the capacity to do amazing things,” he said. “The very fact we are burning this mortgage today means we see and feel God and what an incredible church this is.”

Zionsville author Laura Martin is preparing to release her third book, with three more on the horizon.

BOOKS “Float,” which goes on sale May 29, was inspired by stories from Martin’s father, whose pranks and adventures were woven into her characters’ experiences.

The story follows kids with superpowers spending a summer at camp, including Emerson, who has the ability to float but wears weighted shoes to stay on the ground.

“He has this superpower, but it’s almost a disability,” said Martin, noting that Emerson learns that he needs to step outside of his comfort zone to appreciate life.

“We were raised that way,” Martin said.

“You go outside your comfort zone, and that’s where the adventures happen.”

Martin wanted to write about her father’s stories, like setting a lake on fire and lassoing a pig. “Float” gave her the opportunity.

“I always knew in the back of my mind that I wanted to use his stories somewhere,” Martin said.

and the third that’s been published. She recently completed “Hoax for Hire” about Bigfoot and other mysterious creatures and has been asked by her publisher to write two more.

“It’s exciting and also terrifying because I don’t have these books written,” she said.

Martin’s stories target middle schoolers, particularly boys, to engage reluctant readers.

A summer camp-themed release party will be at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library May 31 with s’mores and a book signing.

Tiny homes coming to IMS

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com Some Indianapolis 500 fans will combine the hotel stay with the convenience of remaining at the track during INDY 500 the long race weekend.

Fifteen tiny homes will be positioned around an infield lake during the May 27 race. The homes were booked within a day and there is a wait list of 100 people, something that Try it Tiny owner Maggie Daniels believes bodes well for the future.

“To sell out in 24 hours of announcing, and the backlog that the track has (with the wait list), it even surprised me, for sure,” said Daniels, who worked with the IMS to bring the idea to this year’s race.

Daniels saw the concept in action in April at Bristol Motor Speedway, where she felt the opportunity for renters to bond with other race fans was well-received.

Campfires and grills were positioned in the tiny home area as a place for fans to congregate each evening.

Try it Tiny owns the rental homes to ensure the standards are at a level expected by the renters.

ZCHS graduate uses knowledge of rideables to develop e-snowboard, hoverboard

COVER STORY His knowledge and experience with electric rideables had him developing a hoverboard, a self-balancing rideable, for a Mark Cuban company in Dallas to working with electronic snowboards for a Los Angeles-based company.

ZCHS teacher Matt Mulholland saw Williams, who goes by E.J., as special early on.

“As a physics teacher, I’m fortunate to have lots of smart students come through my classes,” Mulholland said. “What distinguished E.J. is his ability to create and problem solve. He was always kind of ahead of his time in thinking of new ways to do things, and that’s what sets him apart. He’s intelligent and extremely creative. He’s always thinking about things from a perspective that is different from how most of us view the world.”

Williams realized he wanted a greater challenge after serving internships with Allison Transmission in Indianapolis and Tesla Motors in Palo Alto, Calif., working on a powertrain control system.

“Even that was a little too corporate for me,” Williams said of Tesla. “I think whatever position I took had to be more wellrounded in terms of technical, in terms of marketing and a bigger picture.”

job after graduating from Purdue in 2015.

“Two days after graduating, I went to Europe for a month because I didn’t have an opportunity in school because I was too busy,” Williams said.

When he returned, he received an email from Cuban asking what he was working on. Williams’ father, Evan, had been teammates with Cuban on Indiana University’s rugby club team. The elder Williams was an investor in Cuban’s Motley’s Pub in Bloomington, and they had kept in contact through the years.

“It was lucky on my part and lucky on his part because he wanted to get into those hoverboards, and I was very well-versed in that technology as far as self-balancing because of that Segway project as a senior

in high school,” said Williams, who received a $3,000 grant from the Zionsville Education Foundation to work on a Segway project.

“I had the years of self-balancing and I had the powertrain experience through working with electric go-karts at Purdue and Tesla, so the hoverboard was the perfect product for me to work on.”

Williams spent two-plus years in Dallas working with another engineer to develop the product, MOOV, as a Radical Transport employee.

“The experience of making it was awesome,” Williams said. “We launched it on Kickstarter and it did pretty well. There were a few hiccups. There was a patent that was becoming a hiccup, and turning the company from development to sales was taking longer than expected.”

Williams said he left on good terms with Cuban, who will have to decide if he wants to market the product. “(In 2017), 10 of us were in the Dallas St. Patrick’s Day Parade riding them,” Williams said. “It’s really like nothing else on the market because it’s got a solid platform. It’s an interesting combination of recreation and transportation.”

Williams said Radical Transport is unique.

“Virtually all of what Mark has done in the last 10 years has been investments,” Williams said. “He actively managed us, so that was neat.”

Williams, 25, started engineering consulting in November and returned to central Indiana in February with his girlfriend, Rachel Terrell.

A Facebook commenter on a story about Radical Transport suggested Williams and 2000 ZCHS graduate Aaron Aders, chief executive officer of Leiftech, connect because Aders was in a similar field.

“They have a cool product and I reached out to him,” Williams said. “Within 20 minutes we’re talking on the phone, so I started working with Leiftech to rebuild their firmware and electronics for the esnowboard. It’s a land snowboard that is electric. And they’re doing amazing as a company with great growth. It’s crazy that two Zionsville grads happened to invent and build something in this space within the same couple of years. They had a huge need for electronics engineers with a focus in electric rideables.”

Williams served as a Leiftech consultant and wants to do more consulting with the company in the future.

In addition, Williams is a part-time staffer at Purdue, working with its Motorsports/ MSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiative.

Williams, who worked with the evGrand Prix program at Purdue, is serving as the evGrand Prix development adviser. The evGrand Prix, a competitive electric go-kart race, was held May 15 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with high school teams and May 16 at IMS with college teams. Williams personally helped some teams get started.

“I would like to teach an electrical and autonomous vehicles class at Purdue, which I kind of did when I was a student there,” Williams said.

The good folks at our Indiana Legislature have just completed a “special legislative session” of that august body. It seems that the governor convened the group because of work they did not complete before adjourning for the year. As might be expected, not everyone took the same view about the unusual move.

Some hold that the estimated $30,000 expense is unnecessary – especially since much of the money is going to the people who, as the argument goes, are responsible to have avoided the extension in the first place (incidentally, many legislators have publicly announced their intention to donate the added salary to their favorite charities). Others believe that this year was so abundantly important that it would have been a Herculean effort to get the job done on time.

Without regard to the machinations of the political machinery of our fine state, one imagines the very notion of a do-over.

How would our lives be different if we could call a “special personal session” to rethink and correct our failures, regrets and shortcomings? In a relationship gone awry, could we bring everyone back to “work it out?” In a failed business venture, could we return to the table knowing that we cannot leave until we find a resolution?

Would knowing that we had a failsafe only lead us into further brinksmanship?

Or, would understanding that some higher authority would call us to account for our failures keep us focused on the many tasks confronting us? Life rarely allows itself to be relived. If we fail, we live with the consequences. Yet, are we doomed only to our past self? Is it time for us to call a special session of our own?

I’ve made a radical observation, people: Grounding a teenager is like teaching a baby to sleep through the night. Here we go!

HUMOR One of my early goals as a mom was always to get my precious little infant to sleep a solid eight hours. To do so successfully required three to four nights of me fighting back high blood pressure and tears while my baby “cried it out.” Despite understanding the rationale for such cruel tactics, the urge to succumb to Mama Beardom was generally so great that my husband Doo would have to physically restrain me from “going in.”

Apparently, the tortuous wails of our offspring didn’t affect him. Monster. Of course, this maternal misery was quickly forgotten with the first night of uninterrupted sleep, praise Jesus, but each time I had to go through it, it was pure hell.

Enter grounding a teen. I know in my heart of hearts that when one of our highschoolers makes a poor decision, he or she must face the consequences. This is how they learn from mistakes and avoid adult incarceration. But it’s so much harder when they can argue their case and play the Unfair Card (which they know is my personal trigger). They barter and bribe and professionally manipulate until I’m ready to not only reduce their sentence but extend their privileges. Luckily, Doo isn’t fooled by this nonsense. Just as he did when they were newborns, he keeps me strong.

So, even though 75 percent of our kids can now drive, they will always be my babies. And sometimes, even when it’s difficult, I still have to let them cry it out.

LEGION LOOK The meaning of Memorial Day Commentary by Rick Baum Memorial Day’s history reminds us that our cherished freedoms are not free.

Our nation’s flag flies as a reminder of the last breath of each military member who died protecting us. Someone once said, “They gave their tomorrows for our todays.”

First known as “Decoration Day,” General John A. Logan signed a nationwide proclamation to recognize May 30, 1868, as a time to remember those who died in the Civil War. Volunteers decorated the graves at Arlington for approximately 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. The soul of America during that era was deeply connected to the military as the magnitude of war casualties touched multitudes of surviving family, friends and comrades.

The Civil War’s battlefields brought the establishment of national cemeteries.

Today’s veterans possess the right to be buried on these sacred grounds purposely established throughout the U.S. on behalf of a grateful nation, honoring those who served.

Memorial Day stands as a federal holi-

day on the fourth Monday of May. Veterans organizations preserve the distinctiveness of Memorial Day by conducting ceremonies, speeches and tributes in memory of those military personnel who died while serving our nation.

Each year, the Zionsville American Legion conducts ceremonies at local cemeteries with a memorial reading, rifle salute and the sounding of “Taps.” Volunteers place flags on local veterans’ graves as a statement that, “You are remembered.”

The next time you attend a Memorial Day family function, sale, picnic or veteran event, remember “Freedom is not free.” Keep in mind the countless veteran grave stones placed throughout America.

They stand as a testimony of the sacrificial values, honor and commitment that our nation is the greatest bulwark for freedom in the world. We should honor their legacy.

READER’S VIEW Congrats to primary election winners Editor, Congratulations, winners in the primary election! We thank you for representing your party and your shared ideas. We wish you success in the November election and hope that you accomplish your goal of serving the people of Indiana.

In addition, we thank the competitors in the Indiana primary who ran but did not win. You have made your party and your primary competitors stronger and better. It is difficult to suffer a loss, but many, many successful politicians have suffered and survived to distinguish themselves in lives of public service. Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger!

The practice sprint has been run and now we must all unite, strategize and work together to win the important race — the November election. You have canvassed, campaigned, called and donated, but the struggle has just begun. We will not

stop running till the results come in on election night. Our toughest competitor is ourselves. We may accomplish whatever strength of mind and body, intellectual and physical effort, and the power of hope and the strength of our beliefs will allow till the time before Election Day runs out.

Lastly, candidates cannot compete without money! We must do what we can — outright contributions, fundraisers, coffees, meetand-greets and donations in kind.

Candidates should not be sent to the battle unarmed.

A young friend couldn’t wait to tell me about the latest internet development. “You can order groceries online, and they will PLAIN TALK deliver them right to your door,” he beamed. “You never have to leave the house.” He was smiling so hard his teeth looked like a white picket fence.

“Not to burst your bubble,” I said, “but that’s nothing new.”

“Sure it is,” he said. “They just started it last week.”

For a moment I thought about conceding and letting him glow in his discovery. But then I remembered the glee my parents had when they announced to me that the brand new song I had just heard was one they had danced to in high school. That’s when I told him about Willard’s Grocery store.

Willard’s was a local IGA store at the corner of Clark Avenue and Chestnut Street. Mr. Willard was the son of the original owner, and even though he had added an addition to the back of the store for a freezer section, the place was laid out pretty much the way it had always been.

On Thursday my mother would write out her grocery list and call Willard’s on the phone. Occasionally, she talked to the part-time clerk who

worked there, but most of the time she talked directly with Mr. Willard.

While Mom slowly read the list, Mr. Willard would copy the items down on a pad he kept next to the phone. Then he would walk down the row of shelves, pulling out bags of flour and sugar, boxes of Mother’s Oats and cans of peas and Chef Boyardee and put them into a cardboard box.

At the meat counter he would select the pork chops and weigh the hamburger. Fresh carrots, a head of lettuce and a stalk of celery were added to the mix. When the list was filled, Mr. Willard would tally up the bill and put it in the metal box he kept under the counter. Dad would settle up on the first of the month.

“Then he would load the box of groceries into his pickup and deliver it to our house,” I said.

“Seriously?” my friend asked.

“And you know what else?” He shook his head.

“Mr. Willard would bring the groceries into the house and put them away for Mom.” I asked if the Internet would do that.

Meditations on angry meditators Commentary by Dick Wolfsie I’m under fire after a recent column I wrote about people who meditate. Here is an actual email I received: HUMOR HOW DARE YOU CRITICIZE MEDITATION! I WAS AN UPTIGHT ANGRY PERSON UNTIL I STARTED MEDITATING. YOU ARE REALLY TICKING ME OFF!!!!

OK, using all uppercase is not a capital offense (or maybe it is), but it did make me rethink my initial observations.To educate myself, I headed for a local health food market where they have a bigger selection of New Age magazines than granolas. I was trying to find the right publication, so I grabbed one called Mindlessness, which I thought would advocate for my personal lifestyle. When I got home I realized it was actually called Mindfulness, which was not something I was remotely interested in.

The publication was chock full of advice on how to focus, but experts also advised you should let your mind wander, so I became very confused. How can you do both?

One writer claimed meditation goes back to the early shepherds in the Promised Land.

While the shepherd was minding his flock, if he dozed off, his sheep would do the wan-

dering for him. There you go.

Most of the exercises can be done in the sitting position — exactly the kind of fitness program I was looking for. First, there is alternate nostril breathing: “Hold your right thumb over your right nostril, then release the right nostril and plug it with your pinkie.”

I gave it a try, but my wife came in the room and caught me with my finger up my nose.

One yoga teacher advocates “holding your ears down with two fingers and gently pulling them away from your head at a 45-degree angle.” My wife caught me doing this, also, and told me to go back to picking my nose. Another meditation guru suggests hiding your cellphone to achieve some peace. No problem: I can never find it, anyway.

Finally, “Plant a seed, water it daily and expose it to daylight. Then enjoy the beauty you will behold.” I did that with grass seed. We still have the worst lawn in the neighborhood.

I’m going to meditate on that.

Shop makes customized donuts

By Adam Aasen • adam@youarecurrent.com For four years, Stephany Steiner, a stayat-home mom in Zionsville, has been toying with the idea of opening up a DONUTS boutique donut shop.

“It started as a love for donuts,” she said. “I’d work on the idea when my kids were napping or at school.”

Steiner wanted to do something similar to Charlie’s Donuts in Florida. When her family would visit Rosemary Beach, they’d wake up early to get fresh donuts around 6 or 6:30 a.m. since there would be a long line and they’d sell out fast.

Steiner wanted to create something unique with that same kind of draw. After long nights of researching and lots of donut tasting, she said “our stars aligned” and she opened her own shop, the Donut Refinery, on Old Meridian Street in Carmel next to Brockway Public House. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. to noon Sundays.

The concept is a little different from other local donut shops. Customers build their own donut by starting off with a vanilla cake donut and adding icing, a topping and

a drizzle. Icings include vanilla, chocolate, maple, caramel and more. Toppings include sprinkles, Oreos, bacon, nuts, fruity pebbles and more. Cost is $1.75 for a single donut, $9.50 for a half dozen and $18 for a dozen.

The Donut Refinery fills large orders ahead of time and creates treats for special events such as birthday parties and weddings.

For $265, the Donut Refinery rents its space for 12 guests on Sundays from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Attendees get their own apron to decorate and take home and each guest gets to decorate and take home six donuts.

Additional donuts are used as a birthday cake and beverages are included.

Third time’s a charm

By Heather Lusk • editorial@youarecurrent.com Claire Kaufman is about to appear in her third production of “Annie” within the past year, but this time she’ll play the lead in full-length professional theater at Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre.

THEATER She’ll share the stage with friend Anna Wagner, whom she met when they played orphans in Carmel’s Civic Theater production of “Annie” in fall 2017.

“It’s pretty crazy because there were only a couple of us that got in (at Beef & Boards),” Kaufman said. “And, of course, we were the orphans that have the same birthday.”

The Zionsville residents recently turned 12 and celebrated their birthdays together. This will be Wagner’s first professional production, but Claire got a taste for professional theater and a more grueling schedule in “Peter Rabbit” at the IRT. “I’m glad that I have a little head start,” Kaufman said.

Wagner and Kaufman will perform 46 shows of “Annie” from May 31 to July 15.

“I feel like it’s going to go really fast, though,” Wagner said.

Despite the busy schedule, Kaufman and Wagner look forward to spending spend time with the new friends they’ll make.

“The thing is that we get to hang out with our (school) friends every day,” Kaufman said. “The people (like Anna) you don’t see that often you get to hang out with.”

Wagner is cast as Pepper, one of the older and tougher orphans. Sadie Cohen from Carmel also is part of the cast. The girls portraying orphans range in age from 8 to 13 and come from as far as Crawfordsville and Kokomo.

“Anytime we use local talent we’re always blown away by the level of talent we see,” said Eddie Curry, Beef & Boards’ artistic director.

Curry said the theater typically casts young local talent instead of bringing in performers because of logistical costs, but also because of central Indiana’s deep talent pool.

During auditions, Kaufman and Wagner said they felt nervous seeing other children with extensive theatrical experience.

“I was like, ‘These girls are so professional,’” Kaufman said.

While waiting for cast assignments, the girls were tasked with learning all lines and songs on their own before diving into two weeks of rehearsals prior to opening night.

Although she portrayed Annie a few months ago in an abbreviated version of Zionsville Middle School’s production, Kaufman has had to learn many new elements of the role.

“There’s actually more songs in the original one, more lines,” Kaufman said.

She’s been helped by her sister, Cynthia Kaufman, who is an actress and student at Zionsville Community High School. Cynthia has been part of the Beef & Boards family, having been an understudy to the Wednesday Adams character in “The Adams Family” several years ago.

Cynthia also inspired humility in her sister.

“I want to be the person who pushes others to try their best,” Claire Kaufman said. “I don’t like bragging because people don’t like it.”

Ruoff Home Music Center will host the most concerts it has since the outdoor venue opened as Deer Creek Music Center in 1989 in Noblesville, spokesman Andy Wilson said.

Nearly 50 concerts have already been announced so far.

The center was slated to open its concert series with country star Jason Aldean May 19. The series’ second concert will be perennial crowd favorite Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band. Buffett played at the venue 25 consecutive years before skipping in 2015, returning in 2016 and skipping again in 2017.

Kenny Chesney will appear May 31 and then the calendar really heats up starting with Dead & Company June 6.

Dave Matthews will play two concerts July 6-7. Lynyrd Skynyrd will stop on its farewell tour Aug. 4.

The September schedule has five shows, capped by Ozzy Osbourne Sept. 23.

The final scheduled performance for 2018 is Chris Stapleton Oct. 5.

Zionsville — May 26 is Bike to the Market Day at the Zionsville Farmers’ Market.

Sotheby’s features artist series

By Renee Larr editorial@youarecurrent.com The name Sotheby’s has been synonymous with art since its inception in 1744 by Samuel Baker. Sotheby’s is the EXHIBIT oldest and largest internationally recognized firm of fine art auctioneers in the world. The company also has a real estate division.

Encore Sotheby’s International Realty in Carmel is owned by Mark Zukerman. He was looking for a way to bring the same appreciation of fine art from the auction house to his real estate business.

“I was in (New York City) at the Sotheby’s auction house and noticed they had art that was going to be auctioned off at a future auction available for the public to view,” Zukerman said. “I wondered if I could bring the same idea back to Indianapolis and give the local artists a platform.”

That concept became known as the Encore Sotheby’s International Realty Visiting Artist Series Presented by the Bank of Indianapolis. The first artist to be showcased in Carmel is Cindy Wingo.

The shows are held twice a year in the spring and fall. The spring show was recently held in conjunction with the May 3 grand opening of the new office.

Indiana Wind Symphony Artistic Director Charles Conrad figures concertgoers are in for a rare trumpet treat.

CONCERT “It’s not exaggerating to say Allen Vizzutti is one of the great trumpeters of history,” Conrad said. “He will be our trumpet soloist, and his wife (Laura) is a tremendous pianist and she will be our piano soloist.”

IWS presents “Trumpet Magic with Allen Vizzutti” at 7:30 p.m. May 25 at The Palladium.

Vizzutti performed with the IWS five years ago, Conrad said. This will be the first appearance on stage with IWS by Laura.

“Together they will do a piece that Allen wrote for them to perform with orchestras called ‘Gershwin’s Timeless Treasures,’” Conrad said. “It’s one they’ve done with orchestras around the country and probably in Europe as well.”

Conrad said it will include “I Got Rhythm,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Rhapsody in Blue” and some songs from “Porgy and Bess.”

Conrad said the Vizzuttis are huge IndyCar racing fans and will join him at the Indianapolis 500 May 27.

Conrad said the concert will start off with “Magnolia Star,” a famous train between New Orleans and Chicago.

“He has chosen to guest-conduct ‘Riften Wed,’ which refers to a scene in a video game,” Conrad said. “It’s by a composer we have enjoyed doing many of her works, Julie Giroux.”

Blueprint for Improvement: Geist master suite remodel Commentary by Larry Greene

Before

Background Info: This 1980s home is in the Windjammer neighborhood near Geist. Although this is a very desirable area, the finishes of the home were dated and lacked appeal. Additionally, much of the space was functionally underutilized.

The goal was to give the owners a new master suite that was modern yet timeless and get better utilization out of the space they had.

1. One major transformation came from removing the carpet and replacing it with a wood-look tile. This unique tile flooring is much more functional and visually appealing.

2. Another large impact came from updating all the cabinetry and adding an additional vanity space with custom cabinet accessories, like built-in laundry hamper storage.

3. Removing the shower and replacing it with a larger custom tile shower helped give the space a more updated look.

4. Replacing the tub and adding some detailed tile work and paneling helped create a cohesive design.

5. Additionally, fixtures, hardware and painting completed the look.

View Mesa Verde National Park Commentary by Don Knebel Mesa Verde National Park, in the southwest corner of Colorado, includes remarkably well-preserved dwellings TRAVEL of people living in what is now North America hundreds of years before Columbus.

More than 10,000 years ago, Native Americans began living in what is now the Four Corners region of the United States.

Originally hunter-gatherers, they eventually established villages and cultivated corn.

In about 600 A.D., a group now called the Ancestral Puebloans, perhaps to escape their enemies, began building villages atop a 7,000-foot-high plateau Spanish explorers named Mesa Verde (Green Table). They located their villages on ledges below overhanging rocks. By the 13th century, these cliff dwellers were constructing long-lasting structures made of sandstone blocks held together by mortar, with roofs made of wood. They erected stone towers as lookouts for unwelcome visitors.

Over time, about 600 cliff dwellings were built atop Mesa Verde. A collection of structures known today as Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling in North America, built

in about 1200 A.D. to house 100 people. It includes 23 kivas, circular rooms that were used in religious ceremonies. Cliff Palace also includes a 26-foot tall square lookout tower and a shorter round tower, the exact purpose of which remains unknown. In about 1285, the cliff dwellers of Mesa Verde and the inhabitants of the surrounding area abandoned their villages and moved south, probably to avoid a severe drought in the area, leaving behind many of their household items.

In 1888, two Colorado ranchers looking for stray cattle atop Mesa Verde discovered the abandoned ruins of Cliff Palace, which they described as a “magnificent city.” In 1906, after visitors had walked away with many of the artifacts of the area, Mesa Verde became a national park. Visitors today can hike with knowledgeable park rangers to many of the cliff dwellings, including the Cliff Palace,
