Construction on Ford Road roundabout to begin soon

Construction will soon begin on the roundabout at the intersection of Ford and Bloor roads after nearly a yearTRANSPORTATION long delay.

On June 2, after the last day of school, Bloor Road eastbound will be close to through traffic for the summer.

As of May 26 the west entrance to the Village Walk subdivision will close permanently. This short street segment will become a pathway for pedestrians.

Village Walk resident Andrea Tennancour expressed frustration with the necessary elimination of the entrance in order to create the roundabout. “It probably will help traffic on Ford Road in actuality,� she said, “but it’s not going to help our neighborhood.�

She’s concerned that it may be a challenge during rush hour to turn left or right out of fewer entrances because of an anticipated backlog created by the roundabout.

Tennancour felt that the additional drive time that it will take for those who live near the soonto-be-eliminated entrance may not be worth the benefit. “It’s unfair for the residents who live on that side of the neighborhood who use that entrance daily,� she said. “It’s a big neighborhood.�

The 120-day project will be completed in four phases. According to Lance Lantz, Zionsville superintendent of street/stormwater services, it’s during the last phase when full utility of the intersections will be restored. The project is planned to be complete before school resumes on Aug. 11. “We’re trying to be very respectful of the needs of the school itself as well as students who drive to school,� Lantz said. “We are looking

During the project, Ford Road will remain open to through traffic for most of the time with occasional short closures to dig storm sewers under the road. “This schedule requires everything to fall in line very, very well,� Lantz said. “That doesn’t always happen with road construction projects.�

The project was originally approved in March 2014. The delay was primarily caused by challenges in acquiring the property at the southeast corner. The home was in foreclosure and the property was transferred to different banks. According to Lantz it was often difficult to find the correct person with whom to do business, creating a longer than anticipated delay. The home was vacated upon the death of the occupants.

The home on the property was acquired by the town in December 2014 and demolished in February.

Hospital thanks volunteers – Witham Hospital recently held a luncheon to thank its volunteers and chaplains. At the event, hospital officials presented a special gift to volunteer services director Donna Boyland to thank her for 33 years of service. Roberta Owen received the Volunteer of the Year award. Owen has served at the hospital for more than 10 years after working there for almost 25 years before retirement.

ZCS Teacher of the Year – Zionsville Community High School Spanish teacher Lindsay Alessandrini received the district’s Teacher of the Year award at the school board meeting on May 11. Alessandrini has taught at the high school for 15 years.

DECA competitor – ZCHS senior, Sam Burton, qualified during state competition to attend the National DECA competition in Orlando, Fla., in April. Burton placed in the top 40 for Restaurant and Food Services out of 400 students and placed in the top 20 in Role Playing in Marketing. He was among 18,500 students across the nation who were competing in the Nationals.

ZPD joins search for well-dressed thief

A thief described as well-dressed and polite made Zionsville Presbyterian Church his latest target May 7, although he did not end CRIME up taking anything from the church.

The man, who wears a suit and tie, is suspected of stealing items such as wallets and credit cards from various Indianapolisarea businesses and churches. He walks into a business as if he belongs there and will try multiple doors to gain access. “He doesn’t seem to be a threat, just a guy

that has a system apparently working for him,�

Zionsville Police Department Capt. Robert Musgrave said. “He is unsuspecting, well-dressed and it takes people a bit to recognize who he is.�

Musgrave also said that residents and businesspeople can take several steps to avoid becoming the thief’s next target. “Keep your belongings near you or locked up in a secure portion of building, don’t leave them laying out and make sure doors are locked so people can’t just walk into an unoccupied room,� he said. “Keep lights on in the area, make sure you are in an occupied area with other people.

Police are urging anyone who sees the suspect to immediately call 911. Once the emergency call is made, Musgrave said it is crucial to give a physical description, a vehicle description, the direction of travel or anything identifiable.

No other reports have been made since the church called in as of presstime.

ZCS considering referendum

By Ann Marie Shambaugh 0]]<PaXT/h^dPaTRdaaT]c R^\ Zionsville Community Schools will drop to the lowest funded district per pupil in the state for at least the next two SCHOOLS school years thanks to the biennial budget bill signed by Gov. Mike Pence on May 7.

While that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sound like good news for the district that led the charge for state school funding reform, ZCS officials told the school board May 11 that they consider the new formula a step in the right direction. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It does give us hope our message is starting to get heard,â&#x20AC;? said Mike Shafer, ZCS chief financial officer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we go back to future sessions we hope to see a continuation.â&#x20AC;?

By 2017, Shafer pointed out that ZCS will receive about $193 more per pupil than the current budget allows, but it will still fall short of the state average by nearly $745 per pupil.

Adding to the funding crisis, ZCS is also facing the expiration of a referendum passed in 2012 at the end of the calendar year. If the referendum tax rate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which voters approved at a maximum of about 24 cents â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is allowed to expire, ZCS will be forced to operate at lower levels of per pupil funding than ever

before, officials said.

An event to showcase the inner and outer beauty of people seeking to rebuild their lives after spending time in prison is expanding.

Cindy Crowe-Layne, FUNDRAISER owner of As the Crowe Flies salon in Zionsville, will hold her next Uncage Your Beauty event in her hometown of Crawfordsville from 7 to 8 p.m. May 21 at New Hope Christian Church.

The mayor of Crawfordsville and others who work with people in recovery will speak.

Crowe-Layne developed the idea for Uncage Your Beauty after corresponding with women at the Boone County Jail. She decided to use her salon to give the women a free makeover once they were released from jail. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I would go in (to the jail), I would see these beautiful women and they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem like they had any hope,â&#x20AC;? Crowe-Layne said.

Some pictures of the women after they received their makeover are on display in the salon. The makeovers gave the women a newly established confidence, she said.

Fifty percent of the proceeds from the fundraiser will stay in Crawfordsville and will be divided between organizations who work with people in recovery. The other 50 percent will go to the Zionsville-based Birds Be Free Foundation, Crowe-Layneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nonprofit that organizes the event. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think because of the epidemic we are seeing nationally with substance abuse, if people come to the event it will give them more information of what they can do to help or to help someone else,â&#x20AC;? ZWMS students needle their way into growing hobby 1h 7TPcWTa ;dbZ Â&#x201C; ]Tfb/RdaaT]ciX^]beX[[T R^\ They gather weekly to knit and chit chat about their day, movies theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen, books theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve read, their pets COVER STORY and families. They help each other with stitches and show off new patterns.

But this is not your average knitting club.

The Knitting Ninjas are comprised primarily of fifth- and sixth-grade students at Zionsville West Middle School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It reminds me of the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s groups I go to,â&#x20AC;? said the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advisor, Julie Breuninger, who is a Zionsville West school counselor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just sit around and chat together.â&#x20AC;?

Breuninger - who patiently alternates between assisting a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new project, helping them reposition needles and repairing dropped stitches - learned to knit when she was slightly younger than these students thanks to an aunt in England. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And then I really didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t knit much,â&#x20AC;? she admitted.

When her daughter required a knitted item for a costume in a school musical, Breuninger decided to knit it herself and remembered how much she had enjoyed it. Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been knitting ever since.

Now she teaches and assists a group of girls (and occasionally boys) at each club meeting. Their projects vary from booties to scarves to hats.

Most of them find the process relaxing, and some chose to knit when they had finished ISTEP instead of reading. Many find themselves knitting instead of playing computer or electronic games. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It keeps you busy if you need to distract yourself,â&#x20AC;? said sixth-grader Camilla Walbank.

The students are learning patience, and, though some are hesitant to admit it, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found that math helps in many ways. But above all many are learning perseverance.

Sarah Beck, a sixth-grader who first began knitting last year, spent nearly a week making a square as part of the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service project. They planned to connect the squares and create a blanket to be donated to a local NICU. But Beck laughs that the week-long project would have taken only four days without the

Mady Reid finds the first row the most challenging part of knitting and had to restart three times in the same hour that the group meets after school, yet she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give up. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The hardest part is where you forget where you are so you have to guess,â&#x20AC;? said sixth-grader Moriah Campbell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Or when you drop a stitch and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to do.â&#x20AC;?

The beginning The girls are all smiles when they talk about the origins of the Knitting Ninjas. Talking over one another, they each wanted to tell the story. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a girl from Zionsville Middle School,â&#x20AC;? said Reid. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They had a knitting club called Sit and Knit.â&#x20AC;?

Walbank recounted that the student had recently transferred to ZWMS and wanted to continue knitting, so she asked the school administrators to consider starting a club (the club at ZMS is no longer meeting). She was able to get a group together, with Breuninger ultimately being assigned as the teacher leader. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When they took their club photos they did ninja moves with their needles,â&#x20AC;? Beck said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and decided they should be called the Ninjas.â&#x20AC;?

And the name stuck.

That tradition has continued for more than

six years, and now the annual club picture for the yearbook shows the group in ninja-like poses wearing as many hand-knitted items as they can find, many of which they have created themselves.

The group meets in the library next to a section of books about knitting, where they can easily search for ideas as needed. They use a variety of donated yarn and needles and can choose to knit around a table or can find a quiet corner of the library if they would prefer. Occasionally they watch a movie while knitting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easier,â&#x20AC;? Beck said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harder at the beginning,â&#x20AC;? said Walbank, â&#x20AC;&#x153;because you have to get it all ready.â&#x20AC;?

On average 20 students participate in the club at the same time, with both girls and boys learning to knit together. Most students are beginners but advanced students are welcome, too.

They all want to continue to try different things and learn more about knitting, but some simply want to keep going. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I want to make a hat and to actually finish something,â&#x20AC;? said Reid.

Knitting isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just a big deal at Zionsville West Middle School â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picking up steam among young people across the country, according May Colucci, executive director of the Craft Yarn Council.

The Craft Yarn Council represents leading yarn companies and other related industries and provides information and resources for knitters and crocheters. It works with teachers around the country through a program called Teaching Teens: Learn to Knit and Crochet. The CYC and Joann Fabric and Craft Stores co-sponsor the program, which has been gaining in popularity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve distributed more than 180,000 free yarn kits to junior and high school students, and we know from teachersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; feedback that the number of younger students, grades six and up, who crochet and knit is increasing,â&#x20AC;? Colucci said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The students are enthusiastic about learning these crafts and especially love the creativity of making something themselves. Teachers love these classes because knitting and crochet have a calming effect on students, as they do for crocheters and knitters of all ages.â&#x20AC;?

In addition, Colucci said, learning to knit improves studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; motor skills and problem solving abilities.

Teachers leave a lifelong impact Commentary by Ward Degler Of all the teachers I had growing up, two stand out: Mr. Jackson taught eighth grade science, and Miss Heldman PLAIN TALK taught high school English and literature. Both were utterly dedicated to their tasks.

Neither were married, maybe because they never quite connected with the right person.

Or because they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford it. Teachers were dirt poor in those days.

Mr. Jackson had a thousand ways to make science interesting to a room full of restless 12-year-olds. He used an electro magnet to lift a 20-pound anvil a foot into the air. Then he dropped it onto a handful of walnuts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Science can be helpful when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hungry,â&#x20AC;? he said, tossing a handful of nutmeats into his mouth.

Miss Heldman loved literature and the English language. And she was determined to pass that love onto us. She had us memorize the Prologue to Chaucerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canterbury Tales â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in the original Old English â&#x20AC;&#x201C; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whan that Aprille with its shores soteâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;?

She had us read short stories and memorize poems. Then, to prove we too could create, she had us write our own versions of a

poem of our choosing.

We agonized, we sweated and we complained to high heaven. But we also got the message. Literature became permanently imbedded in our lives.

Discipline was not a problem in either class.

Of course, no one brought guns to school in those days anyway. If someone had brandished a .45 in Mr. Jacksonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class, he probably would have used the occasion to launch an animated discussion about the properties of gunpowder.

If it had happened in Miss Heldmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s class, I believe she might have drawn her own weapon from her purse, laid it on the desk and dared anyone to start something.

Both taught as long as they could. Mr. Jackson spent his impoverished final years in the county home outside of town. Miss Heldman had managed to save enough money to spend one week in England.

Neither left much when they died. Except in the hearts and minds of those who sat in their classrooms.

READERâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S VIEW Low voter turnout allows small minority to decide elections Editor, I would like to say a HUGE â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thank Youâ&#x20AC;? to those of you who came out and voted for me in this recent Primary Election. Unfortunately, the total voter turnout for all of Boone County was 14.7 percent, or if you would like a different number, only one in seven of Boone County registered voters voted. Very sad!

Along with embarrassingly low voter turnout, we seem to be willing to let a small minority choose

our elected officials for us. Residents need to be more engaged in the process and aware of the issues facing the Town of Zionsville. At the same time, elected officials need to be more transparent and clearly explain to residents why certain decisions are being made, respect our two-tiered taxing districts and not tax rural residents for urban costs, no matter how they are justifying it.

There was a time when we actually believed Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) would make a fine presidential candidate. And then came Super Storm Sandy a few years back.

President Barack Obama showing up on a wind-ravaged boardwalk, Christie at his side, pledging help to rebuild the Jersey Shore, followed that. It was a great and noble gesture, the presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appearance and promise. It also was important. And then they shared a quick hug. Sure, it was in the emotion of the moment, but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when Christie seemed to lose his backbone (endemic of the Republican Party across this great nation). He was, in the moment, being a great governor, though. And then came Bridge Gate and a blown opportunity. When challenged, if he was as innocent as he claims, then why didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t he go Christie on the media and critics? Very strange. The larger picture will show that he lost, and probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t regain, the pointed bluster for which he was known. Too bad. Perhaps because the party isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily giving him a second look that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a signal he still may be a viable candidate. America needs a president that can stand in the gap, kick butts and take names, and he appeared to be that person. The question is this: Is it too late for him to become a phoenix? We wish we knew. The Daily Beast last week wrote Christie â&#x20AC;&#x153;is planning, over the course of the next few weeks â&#x20AC;Ś to deliver a series of policy speeches on various topics â&#x20AC;Ś Still, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no telling whether his attempt to change the conversation will work.â&#x20AC;? Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be interested to see how it all shakes out, but in our view it probably will be a case of too little too late.

The life-form ladder

One wonders how like us Neanderthal humans may have been. To be sure, there are countless environmental and even physical differences between us moderns and our ancestors. But, is there a retinue of characteristics that has been with us from the beginning? Love, envy, happiness and despair might be on the start of such a list. Surely, they deserve consideration as perpetual qualities of humanity. What about anger, hope, intellect and generosity? But then, canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we expect the family dog to exhibit many of these same traits? Is it that these words apply to all creatures on a continuum from amoeba to Homo sapiens?

Does our command over concepts increase with each rung on the life-form ladder?

Philosophers have discussed and dissected these kinds of questions for as long as weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had language with which to debater the matter. Arriving at a moment when we â&#x20AC;&#x153;knowâ&#x20AC;? that we are a being and imagining what that means is a common conception of

what might distinguish humans from other higher order animals. But if they lack the ability to communicate with us, is it possible to imagine that they do understand more than we think? Many others point to Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s choice of humans to hold dominion over his earthly creation. Do the animals know of this directive? Did they have one of their own? It all becomes very confusing, very quickly. In a world where universal truths are hard to come by, we look for common ground. If we can distill the elements that make up our collective humanity, can we hope to better understand one another?

In looking at a little closer to home, do we see ourselves and those closest to us with an eye informed by these basic elements?

Could it help us understand our spouses?

Teenagers? They are humans, arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they?

How do I describe, in 350 words or less, the multitude of emotions that bombarded me when my oldest obtained his driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license? I have no idea, but HUMOR doggoneit, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m gonna try!

The first feeling that hit was relief. This has been a long-anticipated event in our household for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is having a third driver able to pick up/drop off at dance, volleyball, tae kwon do, track, PRE, student council, Orff, art club, cross country, Sports Clips, Yogurtz and Subway. [Carpooling and I no longer must maintain our façade of niceties and can finally go our separate ways; I wish him the best of luck!]

Piggy-backing relief was pride. We have kept our heir alive for sixteen years and instilled in him not only excellent roundabout negotiating skills, but also, gasp, civic responsibility! While completing the paperwork at the BMV, he registered as an organ donor and inquired about his eligibility to vote in the next Presidential election. Our son may live in a pig sty of a room and think fruit snacks are nutritional, but, by God, he might just make a real contribution to society after all!

Finally, and this one didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t land until I glanced in my rearview mirror and saw Geoffrey behind the wheel of his grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ford Explorer, I felt abject terror. I had just consented to giving a teenage boy the power to kill not only himself, but everyone in the northern Indianapolis suburbs. [Insert emphatic cussing here.] True, his provisional license places limits on when he can drive (not between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.) and on his passengers (no friends for another six months), but still, he can now cause, and be the victim of, both minor fender benders and horrific car accidents. Even worse?

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not a single thing I can do about it.

The last thread of parental protection has been cut, and my 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;2â&#x20AC;? baby is on his own!

Raising children is hard, but wading through the emotions of watching them grow is even harder. Peace out.

Reasons Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll miss Letterman Commentary by Dick Wolfsie

10. The monologue. Unlike other hosts, David Letterman is quick to admit when one of his jokes has bombed, a technique he learned from Johnny Carson.  But hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another difference in late-night monologue HUMOR style: for Jimmy Fallon in particular, virtually every punchline is followed by additional commentary, attempting to reinforce the joke. Lettermanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s zinger is over when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over, except for the hostâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mugging to the audience. Which approach is better?  Well, if you were a Jack Benny fan like I was, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d know the answer.

9. Fun facts (a segment they have discontinued). Based on the fictitious Federal Bureau of Miscellaneous Information, the sketches began with some relatively obscure-but-legitimate facts to set up the premise, but then we got gems like this: Â&#x201C; Orville Wright was the first person to return his seat to the upright and locked position. Â&#x201C; The recent space probe to Mars found no water, but rather traces of Diet Sprite. Â&#x201C; When Thomasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; English Muffins were invented there were only nooks. The cran-

nies came years later.

8. The opening joke. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usually an â&#x20AC;&#x153;insideâ&#x20AC;? joke that only the people in the studio audience understand because Dave came out earlier to interact with the crowd and find someone to poke fun at. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no logical reason this should work, but it always does.

The audience laughter is infectious and viewers want to get in on the fun. 7. Paul Shaffer.  I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know enough about music to judge how good a bandleader he is, but I think his sidekick role has been underappreciated. Paul provides the perfect background commentary to Daveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rants and observations, often simply reiterating or confirming what Dave has said with a perfectly pitched mocked sincerity.  Oh, and Paul has worn a different wild suit or sport coat every night for over 30 years. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll miss that, too.

Small scale: how anyone, anywhere can grill great food Commentary by Sam Elliott

My inner Ron Swanson has never given up on finding a way to grill. Growing up in the suburbs with parents who both cooked regularly, I took grilling out for granted. Because when you move out and can’t grill as OUTDOOR LIVING regularly, you’re driven to find a solution. College life introduces you to the George Foreman style of things.

But I like to think that Swanson – the meat-loving all-American legend of television’s late “Parks and Recreation” – would be proud of my adaptability and creativity when it comes to cooking raw meat over an open flame.

Even city slickers can easily get in on the grilling greatness. Experience has taught me that there’s a grilling option for any size outdoor space. One of my young adulthood’s homes in the city included a small rectangular patch of outdoor concrete no longer than six feet on any side.

But limited space shouldn’t limit your outdoor cooking experience. The best options for small-scale grilling include the smallest of charcoal grills or portable camping propane options. Not having access to a full-size kitchen or grill doesn’t mean you don’t have access to an incredible grilled meal.

And you know what’s great to cook on small grills? Small things.

Ditch the big burger patties for individualized, customizable sliders served on smaller dinner rolls for buns – also grilled, of course.

Tip: To make your own small-size burger buns, use a quick biscuit mix, but instead of water use plain yogurt in the mix. Roll into small balls, bake at 350 degrees and serve topped with mini burgers and toppings.

SOAKED SHRIMP

SHARK STEAKS

Marinate shrimp a concoction of lemon juice, lime juice, salt and pepper overnight or at least for a few hours before cooking. Or you could use Italian dressing. Or barbeque sauce. Or hot sauce. You get the idea. It’s a super easy and effective way to add some solid flavoring to your meat before you grill. Pair with: Sesame Rice and a glass of Chardonnay. Ingredients: Fresh garlic, cayenne pepper, fresh shrimp, paprika, olive oil, salt and lemon juice.

Directions: 1. Preheat grill for medium

heat.

2. In a small bowl, crush the garlic with the salt. Mix in cayenne pepper and paprika, and then stir in olive oil and lemon juice to

form a paste.

3. Lightly oil grill grate. Cook shrimp for two to three minutes per side, or until opaque.

Regardless of how you felt at the end of “Jaws” – or any of the forgettable cash-grab sequels that followed – you’ll find shark steak to be delicious and unlike your typical seafood fishy eating experiences. Shark steaks come pre-cut smaller than beef steaks, but are just as delicious. An overnight stay in a Ziploc bag full of Italian dressing really does wonders for the steaks, adding an enjoyable supporting cast of flavor but still allowing the natural taste of the shark meat to come through the grilling experience. Or try the time-tested milk bath recipe. Pair with: A glass of Pinoit Grigio.

Ingredients: two, eight-ounce shark steaks, two cups of milk, one tablespoon lemon juice, sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.

Directions: 1. Place the shark steaks in a shallow dish and pour

milk over them to cover.

Let stand for 2 hours, or refrigerate overnight.

2. Prepare a grill for medium-high heat. Remove the shark steaks from the pan and pat dry. Discard leftover milk. Season the

steaks with lemon juice, sea salt and pepper.

3. Grill the steaks until meat is firm, about 15 minutes, turning once. Fish should appear white all the way through.

Celebrate spring with artichokes Commentary by Ceci Martinez Spring is here and so are artichokes! An artichoke can be a spectacular dish; it is a dish that makes an impressive starter no matter what the occasion. There are so many ways to prepare them, but my familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite is this easy and simple recipe.

Note: When buying artichokes choose a large bulb with leaves that are tight. Artichokes are cooked perfectly when you pull out an inner leaf and remove the meaty part with your teeth and it is creamy. When you get to the center of the artichoke (which is the best part) take a spoon and pull the fuzzy hairs.

ARTICHOKE APPETIZER Ingredients: 4 large artichokes, 1/2 lemon Dressing: 1/3 cup of good quality olive oil, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 4 tablespoons lemon juice, salt and ground pepper to taste Directions: Wash artichokes under cold water. Cut off bottom stem. Trim tips of leaves with scissors to remove thorns.

Place artichokes in a deep pot with 3 inches of boiling water, add 1/2 a lemon to prevent oxidation. Cover with a lid and gently boil for

Before you ever get on a mat, a yogi should understand five social observances, or the first limb of yoga, called Yamas.

The five external disciplines and restraints are: Â&#x201C; Non-violence (ahimsa) Gandhi said that non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. Jesus encouraged his followers to love their enemies. Every spiritual system in this world shares one common ground: the intention to not cause harm. Â&#x201C; Truthfulness (satya) This yama is the avoidance of all falsehood, exaggeration and pretense. First and foremost, it must be in harmony with ahimsa. Â&#x201C; Non-stealing (asteya) Asteya asks that we take only what is offered and use only what we need. This can be practiced in the realms of material resources,

intellectual material and respect for othersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; time and energy. Â&#x201C; Wise use of energy, including sexual energy (brahmacharya) This yama has often been questioned if celibacy is required as a yogi. It is a commitment to use energy wisely, neither suppressing nor overindulging. Â&#x201C; Non-attachment (aparigraha) Sogyal Rinpoche, author of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying,â&#x20AC;? once said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Freedom does not come from acquisition. It comes from letting go.â&#x20AC;? Buddha considered attachment to be a root cause of suffering. Author Charlotte Bell said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;As we come to peace with the reality of constant change, wisdom grows.â&#x20AC;?

Hardware store celebrates 60 years

The store moved to Boone Village in the late 1970s where it remains today. This store, run

by Steve Akard and his daughter, Leigh Ann, is celebrating its 60th anniversary all month long. The hardware store was started by Steveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, J.J. Akard.

The familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ties to Zionsville are deep.

Steve graduated from Zionsville Community High School. So did Leigh Ann in 1991. Leigh Annâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youngest son Spencer is graduating from ZCHS in June and her son Anthony graduated two years ago. Her oldest son Stuart attended ZCHS before graduating elsewhere. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All three boys have worked here at one time and my sister worked here when she was young,â&#x20AC;? Leigh Ann said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many years ago, my mom, Marsha, was in the store every day, too.â&#x20AC;?

The store is known for supporting the community through fundraisers and other events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always trying to find out different ways to give back to the community,â&#x20AC;? said

Sevilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tower of Gold

The C^aaT ST[ >a^ (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tower of Goldâ&#x20AC;?) reflects an era in which Seville, Spain, became the economic and cultural center of Europe. The source of the towerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alluring TRAVEL name remains a mystery.

Seville lies along the Guadalquivir River about 50 miles upstream from the Atlantic Ocean. By the thirteenth century, Seville was one of the most important cities in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. In about 1222, the Almohads, an Islamic dynasty controlling Andalusia, built the C^aaT ST[ >a^ aside the river to protect the city against attack from Christian forces of the ATR^]`dXbcP (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Recaptureâ&#x20AC;?). The tower comprised a lower section in the form of a regular dodecahedron and an upper octagonal section made of brick.

A large chain stretched from C^aaT ST[ >a^ to another tower across the river, lashing together a series of pontoons and creating a floating barrier to prevent attacking ships from entering the city. The plan failed. In 1248, forces under Ferdinand III of Castile smashed through the barrier, captured Seville and converted the tower to a chapel and then a prison.

Seville continued to grow and prosper under Christian control. After Christopher Co-

Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan left from the C^aaT ST[ >a^ in 1519
