Martini, Plunkett file for Zionsville Town Council seat

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Two people have filed paperwork to replace town council Jeff Papa on the Zionsville Town Council.

Sara Martini, an elementary school teacher in Brownsburg, and Jason Plunkett, a financial representative at Northwestern Mutual, are interested in becoming the next town councilor. As of press time they were the only applicants to file. The filing deadline was 7 p.m. May 12.

A Boone County Republican caucus was held at 7 p.m.

May 15 at Zionsville Town Hall Martini to vote on a replacement for Papa, who is stepping down June 30 just before he begins a new job with Barnes & Thornburg, a firm that provides legal counsel to the town. The new councilor will begin July 1.

“This individual who is chosen will have time to work with the current elected officials and other members of the council and the mayor to be up to speed by the time he or she starts,” said Debbie Ottinger, chair of the Boone County Republican Party.

Martini, 32, has lived in Zionsville for approximately three years but knew she wanted to move to town much longer.

“I have a brother- and sister-in-law that

live here,” she said. “When I first came to visit them five years ago, I knew right away I wanted to live in Zionsville.”

Martini is president of the Zionsville Village Residents’ Association, and in that role she said she works “hand in hand” with the town council. She is also the market manager for the Zionsville Farmers’ Market.

“I am passionate about Zionsville and care about my town,” she said. “It is a unique place, and I want to preserve its character and charm. I believe I can make a positive impact, and I am looking forward to the opportunity of giving back.”

Plunkett, 38, has lived in Zionsville since 2011. He is the Plunkett president of the Zionsville Community Development Corp. and serves on the Boone County Convention and Visitors Bureau. He and his wife, Brittany, are expecting their first child in June.

“I am very excited about the town of Zionsville and care deeply for the progress and growth of this area,” he said. “I have been in business here since 2002, and I have seen firsthand how our community cares for and supports one another.”

New roadwork project – Milestone Contractors has begun work on a $1.4 million project to add turn lanes at the Interstate 465 and U.S. 421/Michigan Road interchange on the north side of Indianapolis. All interchange ramps are planned to remain open during the project. Some lanes at the interchange will be temporarily narrowed and shifted to maintain traffic and provide space for construction. The project is anticipated to be complete by November.

Run encourages organ donation

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com At age 23, Justin Langford tragically lost his life as the result of an accident while driving a flat-bed truck fundraiser for his employer, in Flagstaff, Ariz., in May 2014.

His parents, Bryan and Janice Langford, have made sure their son’s memory lives on. As an organ donor, Justin made certain others live on.

The second annual Justin’s Run4Hope is at 9 a.m. May 20 at New Hope Christian Church in Whitestown. Proceeds from the 4-mile walk/run, 1-mile walk and half-mile kids dash goes to the Justin David Langford Memorial Fund for a scholarship at Vanderbilt University and Zionsville Community High School. Justin, a 2009 ZCHS graduate, graduated from Vanderbilt in 2013.

The race will raise awareness about Donate Life America, which encourages organ donation.

Prior to last year’s run, the Langfords met Justin’s heart recipient, Fernando Zazueta.

Michael Valdez, 37, has been a diabetic his entire life, had complete renal failure and lost vision in an eye. He received Justin’s pancreas.

“He’s no longer diabetic.” He’s gainfully employed. Michael frequently says, ‘Thank You, Justin’ to himself.”

Bryan was on business in Montana and met kidney recipient Alex Taylor, 4, and his family, who live in Idaho.

“He’s just so full of life,” Bryan said. “He’s funny and energetic.”

Market loses traditional tents

2017 SUMMER CAMPS

By Heather Lusk news@currentzionsville.com The special tents that previously blanketed Main Street for the weekevent end of Brick Street Market will no longer be part of the annual artisan fair. Instead, the chamber of commerce board is requiring vendors to bring their own tents.

“It allows our Main Street merchants freedom to have traffic on Friday,” said Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tracy Phillips, noting tents were always in place the night before the market began.

The market runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Phillips noted that vendors who attend Brick Street Market are frequent art fair participants and generally already have their own tents. More than 100 artisans, selling everything from upscaled items to photography and ceramics, will be part of the 32nd annual event.

“The hallmark of this event is handcrafted items,” Phillips said. “The jury that selected these artists was very selective this year, and we have very high quality.”

Episcopal diocese makes history

Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows was ordained as the first black female faith diocesan bishop in the history of the Episcopal Church April 29 at Clowes Hall in Indianapolis. The Most Rev. Michael Curry, the church’s presiding bishop, was joined by more than 40 bishops from the Episcopal Church during the ceremony.

The Episcopal Diocese includes St. Francis-in-the-Fields in Zionsville.

“I’ve had a chance to visit St. Francis-inthe-Fields and I’m moved by the faith of the people I’ve met and by their commitment to invigorating the church,” Baskerville-Burrows said in a press release. “I am looking forward to working with them on bringing the transforming love of God into the life of their communities.”

Baskerville-Burrows succeeds the Right Rev. Catherine Waynick, who retired after 20 years leading the diocese’s 48 congregations in central and southern Indiana.

Four years ago, she created Crosswalk to Work, a program for at-risk youth “that has been transformative for both teenagers and adult mentors alike,” she said.

When she has free time, she enjoys baking breads and cakes and trying new recipes for friends. She also enjoys training for triathlons and cheering her son, Timothy, at T-Ball games.

ZNC to unveil turtle exhibit

By Heather Collins • news@currentzionsville.com The Zion Nature Center will celebrate its 15th anniversary with Birthday & Box Turtles from 1 to 4 p.m.

ANNIVERSARY May 20. The Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech St., opened in 2002 and has more than 200 programs and more than 11,000 visitors and participants each year.

During the celebration, the nature center will unveil its new turtle exhibit. It raised $9,500 last year to bring the professionally designed display to the center. Attendees at the Birthday & Box Turtles event will be the first to see the new box turtle exhibit, which resembles a 6-foot-tall hollowed-out tree stump and includes two portholes to allow visitors to get down to turtle-level.

The exhibit was designed and installed by Minnesota-based Blue Rhino Studio.

The event will also include turtle-themed crafts, animal programs, cake and a slideshow of the history of the nature center.

“It is truly an outstanding story that doesn’t get told too often in this field,” said Mindy Murdock, Zionsville park naturalist and nature center manager. “This event is in celebration of those 15 years and every-

one that played a role in making the nature center what it is today.”

The Zion Nature Center is planning to move into a building near Heritage Trail Park and the Rail Trail Gardens property, a site the Zionsville Town Council recently authorized for purchase. Murdock said the nature center is outgrowing the current space, which has been leased through Zionsville Community Schools.

“This event helps give back to the community, and provides us an opportunity to show them where we envision the nature center heading the next 15 years,” Murdock said. “Our new exhibit, our future building, they are just a start for what I hope we can accomplish with continuing support from the community.”

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com A visit to New York’s National History Museum sparked a small idea in Laura Martin’s mind.

Seeing a dinosaur cover story the size of a dog, and learning that scientists are trying to reanimate dinosaurs, raised several questions. Could people have them as pets? Could they be farm animals? What would that look like on a worldwide scale?

Those questions led to the Zionsville resident’s two-book series published by Harper Collins, 'Edge of Extinction,' beginning with "The Ark Plan," released last year.

“I had this image of a girl trying to get the mail in a world where dinosaurs are back, and something easy like getting the mail isn’t easy anymore,” Martin said.

Martin said that writing a book has been a long-time ambition.

“Even if you live your entire life working toward a dream that doesn’t happen, it’s a better life spent than (saying), 'I wish I’d done that,'” she said.

As a former language arts teacher in Carmel, Martin taught her kids to chase their dreams, always starting the school year by reading the Langston Hughes poem of that name. While teaching she wrote on the side, gearing her books toward reluctant readers with a focus on middle school boys, whom Martin said want action and adventure but might not be ready for the grit or content found in more mature novels.

“I had all these seventh-grade boys who just didn’t like books,” Martin said. “I said, ‘No, you just haven’t found the right book yet.’”

Martin enjoys focusing on middle school students, which she said is a neglected group.

Extinction' had been accepted for publishing, so she decided to leave teaching and focus on writing.

“I feel like when God hands you have a dream that you’ve wanted your whole life, you put everything you have into it,” she said.

But this wasn’t her first book.

“My first book was awful,” she said. “I had to write a book that was bad before I learned how to write a book that was good.”

Martin visits classrooms to talk about reading and writing with students, which she compares to being a grandparent.

“I get to come in, have fun, talk to the

kids, get everyone riled up and don’t have to grade their essays,” she said.

"Edge of Extinction" was originally a single book, but the publisher believed it was too long and decided to make it a twopart series, with a cliffhanger in the first book. Martin added about 75 percent of the content to the second book to extend it.

The additional research took her characters to Lake Michigan with prehistoric marine reptiles, which technically aren’t dinosaurs but were swimming reptiles.

Martin said dinosaur research is changing constantly because things are still being discovered, adding that she filled gaps in research with her imagination.

The sequel, "Code Name Flood," will be released May 30 with a day-long event at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library.

Martin will be at the library for Dino Desserts and a question and answer session from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with other dinosaur-related activities, including a fossil exhibit, adopt-a-dinosaur activity and a survival challenge with the Zion Nature Center.

Martin recently learned that her third book will be published. She expects it to be released next year. The topic is not dinosaurs but is based on stories she heard from her father growing up about overcoming differences.

“You get dreams at certain times in your life for a reason,” she said. “I was literally handed this dream I’ve wanted since I was a little girl at the exact moment when I went from having lots of time to zero time.”

Following dreams is something she encourages students to do during speaking engagements.

“Twenty years are going to go by anyway, so I might as well spend 20 years doing something that I enjoy, and at the end of 20 years have something to show for it,” she said.

Divided notions Commentary by Terry Anker If we were to name only one, what would it be? Certainly, we thinking humans establish our lives in ways that set personal priorities. But if we had to identify a single thing, around which the whole of our lives was formed, could we do it? We might put our faith at the top of the list, or family, or career, or education. Others could hold that avoiding an addiction to be of the highest order – each moment would place that desire to precede all other needs. Often, our priorities shift over time. Those of us who put our children at the zenith would have surely not considered such a structure before beginning a family.

Whatever the prioritization, we all follow some chart helping us to navigate our way in the tumultuous sea of daily existence.

Alas, for some, we think so precious little about what our Polaris is (or should be) that we are led by it with little notion of its presence – or worse, our dominion over it.

Over the past 64 years, North and South Korea, a people divided, have followed different guiding stars. The leaders of the North set as their first objective the preserving of their political regime. As such, military needs consume most resources, and national priorities are tightly constrained. The South followed an intellectual path to free markets and open democracy.

Today, there are vast differences, evidenced by these divergent roads, with two of the starkest being life expectancy, which is 25 percent greater in South Korea, where personal freedom exists.

If priorities set long-ago can destructively constrain our future growth, do we fall behind in failing to routinely review our own guide stars?

Things I didn’t know about wrens Commentary by Ward Degler

There’s a lot I didn’t know about wrens. For starters, plain talk there are at least 80 species, including the house wren, Carolina wren, Eurasian wren, winter wren, Bewick’s wren, cactus wren, marsh wren, sedge wren and rock wren.

I think the ones that have taken up housekeeping at our home are Carolina wrens. They are tiny birds compared to the robins, finches and sparrows that gather noisily at our front yard feeders.

Even so, they are the second largest of all wrens, trailing the cactus wren by several centimeters.

Wrens first showed up at our house several years ago when I forgot to take down a hanging basket on the front porch. When I tried to remove it, I got a cussing by the man of the house that would make a sailor blush. Male wrens are the primary singers, but they also have a vocabulary for swearing that would scare away a hungry mountain lion.

Fast-forward to this year. Another forgotten basket. This one outside the back door. When I reached for it a couple days before Easter, a highly indignant male wren flew ranting and raving to a

nearby post where he let me know in no uncertain terms just what level of bottom feeder I really was, and how the world would be a much better place if all humans would pack up, move out, go to and stay put.

Early this spring I hung a birdhouse from the Japanese maple in the front of the house in hopes a family of bluebirds or finches might find it to their liking.

There were a lot of lookers, but no takers. Until this week when a couple of wrens signed the lease and moved in.

Meanwhile, in the back yard, I looked out the door the other day in time to see three fledglings launch their maiden flight. Two of them flew to the ground while the third lit upside down on the screen door to the back porch where he spent a few minutes trying to figure out which way was up and how to get there.

At last, I thought, I could get rid of the hanging basket. That was yesterday. This morning the female was back in the nest and the male was noisily standing guard.

Another thing I didn’t know about wrens: They raise multiple broods each year.

I am not a crier. Never have been. I don’t know if it’s because I grew up with four sisters and, in an effort to dishumor tinguish myself from the herd, decided to lock that emotional shtick down, or if it’s thanks to my 50 percent British blood that left me with a bit too much Yorkshire stoicism. Regardless, I rarely get weepy. But lately, I’ve noticed myself tearing up at the stupidest times.

Have you seen the new Volkswagen commercial with the family traveling cross-country to deliver the grandfather’s ashes to the Pacific? Throat-clogger. Or the Principal Financial one where the dad has to quit school because his girlfriend gets pregnant, then 20-odd years later graduates, right behind his son? Gulp. At least I can blame these moments of weakness on the magical manipulators of marketing.

But the other day I was sitting in the always-long drive-thru line of Chick-FilA, opening the mail, and out of the blue I begin full-on sobbing into my steering wheel. The culprit? Graduation information from the high school! I mean, seriously!

I’m counting the days until “Geoff-Geoff” is on his merry way, out the door and onto independent, adult living. But between the dorm-fridge raffle announcement and information on cap and gown pick-up, all I could do was think about my first baby boy. Towheaded and talking at an elevated level to be heard above his invasive twin siblings.

Playing 5-year-old rec soccer for the Green Power Rangers and being the tallest kid on the field. Breaking his collarbone in a pickup football game at a Derby party and our telling him to “Shake it off, you’ll be fine.”

I pride myself on keeping my emotions in check, but this graduating from high school thing has me worried. I much prefer a sappy Hallmark ad. Peace out.

Mary Ellen went to a conference last week in Chicago and left me at home.

Alone. When she abandoned humor me last year, I realized I did not know how to run the dishwasher or operate the convection oven.

I felt guilty about all the dirty dishes she came home to, but I am really good with the clothes washer, so to make up for the mess in the kitchen, I went through Mary Ellen’s laundry basket and washed everything. I don’t know what she ate in Chicago, but when she got home two days later and took everything out of the dryer, nothing fit.

Mary Ellen and I watch so many different programs that I can’t keep the story lines or characters straight. I continually ask her to hit the pause button so I can ask questions, like: Is that a good guy or a bad guy? Is that his wife or sister? Is this a flashback?

The first night she was in Chicago, I checked out the DVR to catch up on some shows. There were shows like: “Underground,” “Billions,” “Homeland,” “Feud,” “24” and “Designated Survivor.”

I put on “Billions,” a great show about the world of high-stakes finance, starring Damian Lewis as cutthroat investor Bobby Axelrod. Five minutes into it, I called Mary Ellen in her hotel.

“This Bobby Axelrod character, wasn’t he killed a few episodes back?”

“No, Dick, you are thinking of Damian Lewis when he played Nicholas Brody in “Homeland.”

“Is that the show where he beheaded two of his wives?”

“No, that was when he played Henry the VIII in ‘Wolf Hall.’

“So that’s how he earned his reputation as a cutthroat.”

Mary Ellen made me promise to quit watching TV so she could get some sleep.

I searched under the couch and between the pillows, under the coffee table and behind the lamp. I wanted to turn off the TV. But it wasn’t remotely possible.

“The employees are very proud of it,” said Josh Garrett, co-founder and chief strategy officer. “It is a testament to those employees that we won. It’s not (CEO Scott Kraege) and I. We may be accepting the awards, but we’re getting the awards because of (the employees), not because of us.”

TechPoint hosts the Mira Awards annually to celebrate Indiana’s tech growth. Garrett said company officials were surprised and proud to receive the honor.

Mother, daughter dance into switched roles

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Village Dance Studio has moved five times in the past VILLAGE DANCE STUDIO 39 years, but Annette Pettigrew has been the owner and director through it all. That’s about to change.

Pettigrew and her daughter, Traci Broman, will soon switch roles at the studio. Broman will be the new owner and director while Pettigrew will solely teach classes.

“I’m excited. I think it’ll be good. Mom will get to enjoy what she does best, which is teach. I think I’ll bring a little more organization and some of the new elements,” said Broman, a Fishers resident.

Pettigrew, a Carmel resident, knew she wanted to be a dancer at 4 years old. A few years later she realized she wanted to teach and own a studio.

“I always wanted to teach dance, but about 8 or 9, I could visualize what (the studio) would be,” Pettigrew said. “When I have a vision, it ends up happening. I just did everything I could to make that dream, that vision, happen.”

With help from her husband, Ron, they built a studio from scratch. The first location was an old movie theater in Zionsville, which they renovated and opened within two weeks. They moved three more times in The Village before landing at the current site, 5964 S. 700 E., in 1997.

Broman was a dance student there until she at-

tended Indiana University to study arts management. After graduating in 2011, she returned to the studio to teach while also running her own event planning company.

Pettigrew said she is happy to swap roles and hand off responsibilities.

“The students and families should have the best person,” Pettigrew said. “I think (Broman) is better at running the studio.”

This year’s recital, “When the Stars Align,” will celebrate the nearly 40 years of Pettigrew owning the studio. Broman choreographed a surprise number for her mother to end the show.

The recital is at 6 p.m. May 20 and 2 p.m. May 21 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. The show is free and open to the public.

The duo worked together on the show and will continue to partner through the summer before Broman officially takes over directorship in the fall.

Childless women increasing – There has been a small but significant increase in the number of childless women in their early 30s over the past decade, according to recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey’s fertility supplement. In 2006, 26.2 percent of women ages 30 to 34 were childless, meaning they had never given birth to a child. By 2016, that number had risen about four percentage points to 30.8 percent.

“It was an amazing experience,” Morgan said. “It was a competition, but I looked at it more as a growing opportunity because you got class every day, so you are able to push yourself and learn more about yourself every day rather than just one time on stage.”

The Rust sisters have received several scholarship offers for short -term summer and year-round training.

“We are definitely going to be able to stay together for the summer,” Julia said.

“We aren’t competitive. We don’t think about that. When she wins something, I’m really happy because it feels like I won.

When I win something, she is super-happy for me. We push each other in a good way."

Family friendly ice cream desserts Submitted content courtesy of Family Features and Breyers Brookie Cherry Ice Cream Sandwiches Prep time: 20 minutes, plus 2 hours 30 minutes freezing time Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 8 Ingredients: 1/2 pound fresh cherries, pitted and halved, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice, 4 cups Breyers Natural Vanilla Ice Cream, softened, 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted, 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted, 4 large egg whites, at room temperature, pinch of salt, 1/2 cup walnut pieces, coarsely chopped, nonstick cooking spray Directions: In small saucepan over medium heat, bring cherries, granulated sugar and lemon juice to simmer, mashing cherries with potato masher or fork to break up. Simmer, stirring frequently, for about 15 minutes, or until mixture thickens. Transfer to shallow container, cover and refrigerate until cold.

In large chilled bowl, fold cherry mixture into ice cream until blended. Cover and freeze approximately 2 hours, or until firm.

Heat oven to 350 F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper.

Meanwhile, in medium bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, egg whites and salt. Beat for about 1 minute, or until just blended. Fold in walnuts.

Immediately drop 16 mounds of batter onto prepared baking sheets. Spray underside of spoon with cooking spray and spread into 2 1/2-inch rounds. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until tops are shiny and cracked. Cool cookies completely.

Scoop ice cream onto flat side of cookies.

Place another cookie on top of ice cream and gently press down. Return sandwiches to freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up before serving.

There are hundreds and hundreds of paver options availhome improvement able with size, color and shape, all part of the dizzy equation. Couple that with concrete versus clay pavers and confuse it with the natural stone alternative, and the decision process can be daunting — unless experienced professionals are guiding the sourcing process.

Miracle of the Hanging Church Commentary by Don Knebel Members of the Coptic (Egyptian) Church trace their origins to Saint Mark, who they believe visited Egypt in 42 A.D. travel and became their first patriarch. Today, the Coptic section of Cairo is known for a unique church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom they attribute a famous miracle.

Built as early as the seventh century, the church rests on a foundation of logs and stone extended between the tops of the south gate towers of the Roman-era Babylon Fortress, creating the illusion that the church was suspended in the air and giving the church the name Al-Muallaka, meaning “the Hanging” or “the Suspended.” Centuries of accumulated debris have raised the ground level around the church by about 20 feet, nearly burying the towers and eliminating the illusion, but entering the church still requires climbing 29 steps.

The interior of the church has been remodeled repeatedly, but one of its most distinctive features remains. The vaulted wooden ceiling is reportedly intended to

suggest an inverted Noah’s ark. Seven huge icons above the altar are among the church’s 110 icons, one of which, called the “Coptic Mona Lisa” because of its iconic portrayal of Mary and the infant Jesus, was created in the eighth century. In the late 10th century, the Fatimid Caliph who ruled Cairo reportedly challenged Patriarch Abraham, who had recently remodeled the church, to prove that faith could move mountains, as Jesus had taught. Copts believe that after Abraham prayed for three days to Mary’s icon, she appeared and gave him the power to cause a section of a mountain near Cairo to break off and move, earning the Caliph’s favor. Whether or not the story is true, the Hanging Church remains a symbol of the ongoing Christian history of Egypt, and the mountain is still called “Mokattam,” meaning “broken off mountain.”
