Little League rezoning approved

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Town Council voted 4-2 on May 7 to rezone 15 acres to accommodate a new headquarters DEVELOPMENT for the Little League International Central Region Headquarters, even as councilors and nearby residents expressed concerns about a 76-home development called The Fields tied to the project.

The rezoning changes approximately 15 acres at 8602 E 500 S from urban residential to a special use zoning district. The site is part of a larger parcel owned by State Bank of Lizton. Pulte Homes is planning to purchase the entire parcel, build 76 homes on approximately 40 acres and donate the remaining 15 acres to Little League, but only if the town approves both projects.

Most of the remonstrators spoke in favor of the Little League headquarters but said the Pulte development would be out of place in a rural part of town.

“We’re unable to find any area in Zionsville, or Whitestown for that matter, with equivalent or higher density. Effectively, this would be apartments disguised as homes,” said Max Schmidt, who lives near the proposed development.

Others expressed disapproval that Pulte has requested a variance to use the Little League land to meet open space requirements for the proposed neighborhood. Zionsville Director of Planning and Economic Development Wayne DeLong said he believed Carter Station Park was used in a similar way to meet open space requirements for a nearby development.

The council only voted on rezoning the site of the Little League headquarters, but some councilors said they could not ignore its ties to the proposed neighborhood.

“The two-step process seems a little peculiar given that the two things are linked,” councilor Tom Schuler said.

Schuler suggested delaying a vote on the rezoning to give remonstrators more time to review the proposal and give feedback, but the council decided to approve the rezoning in part to avoid slowing down the Little

Pulte’s proposed neighborhood south of the site of the Little League headquarters is known as The Fields and features baseball-themed street names, such as Wrigley Avenue, Cubs Circle and Cardinal Court. After meeting with neighbors, Pulte has decreased the proposed number of homes from 78 to 76.

Plans filed with the town show that Little League’s portion of the land would include two ball fields with press boxes, a building with concessions and restrooms, a building with a gift shop and restrooms, a covered shelter and more.

Matt Price, an attorney representing Pulte Homes and Little League International, said that when Zionsville submitted its bid to land the new headquarters it committed to having the new ball fields ready in time for the 2019 summer tournament. He said a delay could put that in jeopardy.

Zionsville’s bid also committed to finding land for the headquarters that would be free to Little League and to raising $1.5 million to help offset construction costs.

Council President Josh Garrett pointed out that the town council voted to approve Zionsville’s bid and that Pulte is the only group to step forward to donate land so far. He said remonstrators will have opportunities to voice their opinions at upcoming meetings of Zionsville’s board of zoning appeals and plan commission, which will discuss and vote on plans for the neighborhood.

The plan commission will meet at 7 p.m.

May 21 to discuss the project.

Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen is on track to serve four more years in office after voters overwhelmingly elected COUNTY him over Mike Greene in the May 8 Republican primary.

Nielsen received 6,203 votes, or nearly 83 percent, of 7,508 votes cast.

“I appreciate the support of all the Boone County voters,” Nielsen said.

“We’re excited we’ve got Nielsen another opportunity to continue our five-year strategic plan we’re in the second year of implementing.”

In the race for Boone County Circuit Court Judge, Lori Schein received 41.38 percent of the vote to narrowly edge out Todd Meyer, who received 40.89 percent. Tamie Jo Morog received 17.74 percent of the vote.

No candidate filed to run for sheriff or judge in the Democratic primary.

Thornton wins District 5 race

Voters selected Dee Thornton in the May 8 primary as the Democratic candidate in the race for the U.S. House of ELECTION Representatives Fifth District seat. The Carmel resident received 53 percent of the vote in a field of five candidates seeking the seat held

by Republican Susan Brooks, who was unopposed.

Thornton said she “couldn’t be happier” with Thornton the results.

“I know that we were running a strong race, and I think the results demonstrated that,” she said. “I am encouraged by the overall turnout in the midterm.”

Thornton received 18,073 of the 34,111 votes cast for candidates in the Fifth District Democratic primary. Kyle Moore finished second with 23.7 percent of the vote, followed by Dion Douglas (10.3 percent), Eshel Faraggi (7.6 percent) and Sean Dugdale (5.4 percent).

Apartments proposed for US 421 site once planned for Walmart

A petition for a 218-unit apartment complex has been filed with the Town of Zionsville for a site that was once expected to be the home of a new DEVELOPMENT Walmart.

Archview Properties has petitioned to rezone nearly 15 acres west of Michigan Road between 106th Street and Bennett Parkway from urban business to residential multi-family zoning.

Development plans include three, three-story apartment buildings, a club room, game area, swimming pool and nearly 400 parking spaces. The Zionsville Plan Commission will consider the request at its May 21 meeting.

Tim Ochs, an attorney representing Archview Properties, said the apartments would only be built on the Boone County portion of Walmart’s land. The retailer’s property straddles the Boone and Hamilton county line, with about one-third of the site in Carmel. Ochs said a plan is being developed for the land in Hamilton County but did not

disclose details.

Walmart still owns the land but intends to sell it if the project is approved, Ochs said. A Walmart spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

The empty lot was the source of a legal battle between Walmart and the Town of Zionsville for 10 years, culminating in 2016 when a Boone County judge reversed the Zionsville Plan Commission’s 2008 decision to deny Walmart’s plans to build.

Walmart officials said in 2017 that they would not pursue a store at that location, citing a changed retail landscape since the store was first proposed.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak hosted the first Mayor’s Night In of 2018 on May 2 at Town Hall. The informal event TOWN NEWS provided an opportunity for residents and business owners to speak directly with Haak and town department heads.

“These nights are designed for you, the community, to answer your questions and hear from you,” Haak said.

Haak spent an hour discussing current and future plans for the town, including development, roads, parks and ordinances.

The first major project discussed was the expansion of Zionsville Road and addition of a pathway into the Village.

Construction will begin in June on Zionsville Road. The roadway will be reconstructed and expanded, creating a wider road and a pedestrian bridge with outcroppings. The pedestrian bridge will serve as a path into the Village and will meet up with the Rail Trail when the trail is extended. A section of Zionsville Road will be closed throughout most of the summer, which saves time on the overall construction cycle and allows

Other projects mentioned by Haak included an amendment to Zionsville’s smoking ordinance to ban all tobacco products or derivatives. He also discussed the “80-20 by 2020” plan to reduce property taxes.

“Our goal was to reduce the residential tax base to 80 percent by 2020, down from 95 percent back in 2008, when we first announced this plan,” Haak said. “We announced earlier this year that we hit our goal two years early.”

The next Mayor’s Night In is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 28 in the St. Vincent Community Room at Zionsville Town Hall.

Ten new vendors will join the market this year, with several replacing those not returning with items like pasta and beef jerky.

Vietnamese Eggroll Bar, Old Major with custom sausages and Confections by Kay are new while 3 in 1 Restaurant serving tamales will return by popular demand after skipping last year’s market.

Many of the new vendors each year live locally or hear about the market through word of mouth.

“They come to the market, they’re customers at the market, they already know about it,” said Market Master Sara Martini, who coordinates market activities and vendors. “I try to bring in things that are unique and different and maybe things that wouldn’t be found on Main Street.”

every other weekend. Two booths are being shared by four vendors, appearing on alternate weeks.

Three Dog Bakery will have a booth this year because the ban on dog food and treats is lifted “to give those furry customers a vendor of their own,” Martini said.

“We welcome dogs and think that they should be part of the market, too.”

Zionsville is one of the few dog-friendly markets in the area.

A partnership between the Whitestown Parks Dept. and Centier Bank will give kids a chance to earn WHITESTOWN money to spend at the Whitestown Farmers Market. The goal of the Crop Coins program is to give youth a reason to look forward to the market.

“I had attended a Farmers Market Forum where other market managers had talked about a kids program they had that was similar,” said Sarah Burns, Whitestown Parks Dept. events coordinator. “I took that idea and morphed it a bit to turn it into something that worked in our community.”

The Crop Coins program lets kids earn money to spend at the Farmers Market.

They pick up a “task card” at the Farmers Market or at the Whitestown or Zionsville branch of Centier Bank and then visit area businesses to pick up items. When they’ve completed the tasks, they bring the com-

pleted cards to the market to redeem their Crop Coins to spend at vendor booths.

Centier Bank donated $500 to get the Crop Coins program started.

Burns said the program will appeal to kids because it will be a “fun” way for them to participate in the market.

“This gives them the experience of shopping at the market, the satisfaction of earning money and using that money to buy something,” she said.

Kids younger than 18 can participate in Crop Coins. For the inaugural year, they can earn $5 to spend at the market.

“Hopefully next year, once we can prove the success of it, we’ll be able to raise the amount the kids can earn,” Burns said.

“I am hoping this is something we do in coordination with the parks department for years to come,” Duncan said. “Whitestown is an excellent place to work and live, so we hope we can always collaborate in ways to give back.”

The Whitestown Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays until Sept. 1.

ZMS student wins two pageant awards

By Sara Baldwin • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Middle School student Akira Hall placed second runner-up for her age division in the Miss Teen Indianapolis Pageant last month at ACHIEVEMENT the Avon High School auditorium. She also won the Photogenic Award for her age division.

But it likely wouldn’t have happened without a selfless act by her older sister, Jecinda Bankert, who decided to give up her spot after the girls didn’t raise enough sponsorship money for both to compete.

“We went to a lot of places around Zionsville and Boone Village, but we ran out of time,” Bankert said. “There was enough for at least one of us to go through with it, so I wanted my little sister to go. She seemed more passionate about it. It’s more of her dream, and it made her happy.”

When Bankert told Hall, 12, that she should be the one to go, Hall protested that her older sister should compete in the pageant so that she could win scholarship money for college. Bankert is headed to Ball State University in the fall to study nursing. But Bankert decided to focus her scholarship efforts elsewhere, so Hall proceeded.

Bankert found the Miss Teen Pageant opportunity while searching the internet for college scholarship opportunities. She realized that her younger sister also was eligible to participate.

“Everyone (at the pageant) was really nice,” Hall said.

Brick Street active in literary world

Sidewalk poetry winners announced

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Poetry has been a lifelong love for Joyce Brinkman.

So fittingly, Indiana’s first official poet laureate helped found Brick Street Poetry in her hometown of Zionsville.

POETRY “It got its name because we started at the Brick Street Inn in June of ’08,” said Brinkman, who served as the poet laureate from 2002 to 2008.

The sites have changed in Zionsville over the years, but the name remains. On the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m., except for January, there is a Poetry on Brick Street reading. The readings are now at SullivanMunce Cultural Center, 225 W. Hawthorne St., Zionsville.

Adrian Matejka, Indiana’s reigning poet laureate, will be featured for the June 7 reading.

Tipton Poetry Journal became part of the Brick Street Poetry Inc., a nonprofit, not long after the group was founded.

“One of the reasons we consider ourselves a global company is the Tipton Poetry Journal gets submissions from all over the world,” said Brinkman, a former Indiana state treasurer and state representative. “In our Poetry on Brick Street, we’ve had poets from Germany, Mexico and Ecuador as well as local poets. We always have an open mic after our guest poet (concludes).”

Poetry Alive started out as a hospital program but has since grown to schools and state parks.

“We read poetry from a book we’ve published called ‘Words & Other Wild Things,’ a book of poetry for children,” Brinkman said.

“We have costumed characters from animals in the books. We’ve also done that in the parks and campgrounds. The kids always

Former journalist/columnist Dan Carpenter serves as a member of the Brick Street board.

“There is a smorgasbord of stuff we put together,” Carpenter said. “They have the Zionsville readings and readings on the south side of Indianapolis down by Garfield Park. They do programs from Artsgarden. Joyce is tireless, she has one project after another.”

Brick Street has supported the Muslim Voices Poetry Project, which included poems in public collection boxes on Monument Circle in Indianapolis during April.

Zionsville Cultural District, in partnership with the Town of Zionsville, has announced the winners of the second CONTEST annual “Step-On-Us Sidewalk Poetry Contest,” which launched in January. In the adult category, Mary M. Brown has been selected the firstplace winner, and in the youth category, Aleyna Salas has been selected the firstplace winner.

An Anderson resident, Brown taught literature and creative writing at Indiana Wesleyan University and was the editor of The Steinbeck Review.

“I tried to write a poem accessible to children as well as adults in this public place,” Brown said.

Aleyna Salas is a fourth-grade student at Eagle Elementary. In her free time, she enjoys writing books.

“I entered the contest because I think writing of any kind is enjoyable and I wanted to try something new,” Salas said. “J.K. Rowling is my role model.”

Second-place winners include S. Evan Walters of Lebanon in the adult category and Elia Makinson, a student at Zionsville West Middle School, in the youth category.

In total, 58 poetry entries were submitted in the adult category and 12 entries were submitted in the youth category.

IMS president job a dream come true for Zionsville’s Boles Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles has a goal each night of calling 10 customers during the 35-minute ride to his Zionsville home.

“No matter how bad the day was, it’s COVER STORY amazing to talk to fans and hear their stories about the Speedway,” Boles said. “It’s cool to find why they fell in love with the place and what it means to them.”

Boles, 51, knows where he gets his love of the sport.

“I grew up in a household where the major thing we talked about was auto racing, in particular the Indy 500 and IndyCars,” Boles said.

After working in publicity at the U.S. Auto Club, his father, Jeff, went to law school and eventually became a Hendricks County Circuit Court Judge, retiring in 2014. Through the years, Jeff Boles has continued working as an observer for the Indy 500 and IndyCar races.

“It’s definitely how I fell in love with the sport,” Boles said. “I talk to my dad every day and usually the first question out of his mouth is, ‘Is there any racing news?’ It’s been a bond we’ve had our whole life.”

When Doug Boles was 10, his dad determined it was time for him to attend his first race.

“That was A.J. Foyt’s fourth win (in 1977), so he got to watch him parade around afterwards with (IMS owner) Mr. (Tony) Hulman in the pace car,” Jeff Boles said.

Many fans have similar stories of family race traditions, Doug Boles said.

“A lot of times people’s parents have passed on, but they’ve introduced their kids and grandkids,” he said. “It’s one of those events that has passed on from generation to generation.”

Even when Boles was choosing colleges, the Danville High School graduate decided to swim at Butler instead of DePauw because it was closer to IMS and he could watch testing sessions.

“I was a journalism major because I thought if I can’t race, I can write about it,” said Boles, who drove in the Sports Car Club of America series after college.

However, Boles first worked in politics, working in the Statehouse and for then-Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, who put him on a motor sports task force.

“Our task was to get racing businesses to relocate to Indianapolis,” Boles said. “Through that I did weekend work for ESPN.” From 1997 to 2006, he became part of the Panther Racing team as chief operating officer and part owner.

After serving as a drivers’ agent, Boles, who earned his law degree in 2000, joined IMS as vice president of commu-

nications in 2010. He added the title of chief operating officer in 2013 before becoming president a few months later.

“It’s been the greatest five years a kid from central Indiana could ever have,” Boles said.

All his racing experiences are a boost to Boles.

“He understands all the different sides on how to sell the race and put the race in the best light,” said Kevin Lee, NBC Sports racing reporter and longtime IMS Radio Network reporter. “While we think about the president’s role as administrative and all-encompassing, I think Doug would say one of the most important aspects is the promoting aspect.

It kind of harkens back, this is a bit like (IMS founder) Carl Fisher was like. He was a promoter.”

Lee said there wasn’t as much need to promote the Indianapolis 500 from the 1930s to the 1990s.

“It kind of sold itself,” Lee said. “But now there is so much competition, not only in the sports landscape but the entertainment landscape, that you have to be front and center and remind people what is going on.”

Boles has skydived into the Speedway, pulled an Olympic skier around the yard of bricks and camped out in a tent with race fans.

Personal: Boles and his wife, Beth, moved to Zionsville in 2001. They have a son together, Carter, a freshman at Heritage Christian High School, and Beth has three sons from her marriage to former driver Derek Daly: Conor, Colin and Christian.

On living in Zionsville: “I’ve lived there longer than any place else in my life,” Boles said. “I love Boone County. I love the Town of Zionsville. I get on my bike and ride all the county roads between Zionsville and Whitestown and Lebanon.”

Strangest request: A woman from the northeast U.S. sent Boles a letter with ashes of her late husband, a devoted Indy 500 fan, saying she promised him some of his ashes would be spread at the Speedway. State law prevented Boles from doing that. “But I didn’t want to let this lady down, so I walked up in the grandstands and opened up the envelope with a small amount of ashes in a tiny Ziploc bag.”

Boles taped the bag to the seat where the man always sat and took a photo to send to the widow.

Vintage Racing Invitational, NASCAR’s Big Machine Vodka 400 at the Brickyard race, Red Bull Air Race and concerts, Boles stays busy year-round.

“We’re trying to find ways to keep a race track (active) that at one point was open only one month a year,” Boles said.

Lee witnesses the long hours Boles puts in, noting Boles’ car is often still there after Lee finishes hosting historian Donald Davidson on a radio show at 9 p.m.

“He’s tireless,” Lee said. “As hard as we think we work, we know the boss is always working a little harder.”

The best moments for Boles are annual.

“Race day and those 30 minutes leading up to the command is always a magical moment,” Boles said. “You couldn’t be prouder to be a Hoosier and have this place on an international stage. I spend 80 percent of the day walking in the grandstands finding people who I want to thank, people that have been coming here for a long time.”

Commentary by Terry Anker Mick Jagger famously reminded us that “You can’t always get what you want.” The catchy pop tune penned by Jagger and his longtime collaborator Keith Richards reinforces a simple point, one that should have been committed firmly into our collective psyche by early adulthood yet manages to elude us even decades later. Life, it seems, is filled with unrequited hopes and desires.

We balance competing priorities, often spanning extreme poles, always living in compromise. Our desire to enjoy a placid domestic life stands in contrast to our fantasy of following Hemingway to an endless sea of adventure. Few of us can afford to drive a monster truck, exotic sports car, custom classic and stylish sedan – we have to pick one, or maybe, if we are lucky, two, and go with it.

As the years pass, we settle comfortably into our choices. Still, can we hope to reconcile our imagined lives with the ones that we are actually living? Can the fantasy compete with the reality?

What if The Rolling Stones had asserted “You don’t always want what you get” instead of positing their now-famous musing?

Many of us must wonder if we are in command of our own expectations sufficiently to unequivocally know what it is that we want. Would it be more honest to admit that we too often wait for life to deliver itself to us – and then we react to it. If ours is an existence of abundant compromise, should we embrace the choices we’ve made or, instead, live in eternal regret over the paths not taken? Or, do we ultimately find that life gives us just what we need?

Drunken lawnmower racing Commentary by Ward Degler

A guy from Franklin, Ind., was arrested last week for drunk driving – while operating his lawnmower.

PLAIN TALK Apparently, he was driving his mower down a county road when he suddenly decided to veer into someone’s yard and start cutting their grass.

I happen to know a little about drunken mower driving. When I lived in Minnesota, the guys in the neighborhood held lawnmower races on summer weekends.

You’ve got to understand, Minnesota winters are long and often brutal. After you’ve run the snow blower for the 100th time there’s not much else to do except soup up the lawnmower. And everybody knows lawnmower souping-up is a highly delicate endeavor that takes a lot of planning. And a lot of beer.

By the start of the race every driver,

pit crew member and most fans are snotflying drunk. When the starter fires his gun, most of the mowers are more or less lined up at the starting line, albeit some may be facing the wrong direction.

The race itself is supposed to be 50 laps but often ends when the last mower running conks out in the third turn. Others have blown their engines, accidentally driven into the shallow creek behind the industrial park, or the drivers have simply passed out somewhere on the track.

By Monday, most of the machines are back in their garages while their drivers work frantically to ready them for next weekend’s race. That takes beer, too.

My baby is home from college! For the next 102 days. I know because I checked.

And I may or may not have started a secret countdown to his departure in HUMOR August.

It’s not that we don’t love our oldest, who just completed his freshman year at IU. He’s generally kind and funny and interesting to talk to. But we’ve gotten so used to not having him around that when he returns, everything seems out of whack.

For starters, he uses a lot of space, both physically and audibly. He’s 6-foot-3 and loud, and mostly unaware of either. On the car ride home, my youngest commented on his incredible ability to hijack the minivan with his person and stream-of-consciousness-like chatter: “Mom, I can’t get away from him! Every time I turn up the music, he purposely raises his voice.”

To fuel that large frame and chattyCathyness, our oldest consumes millions of calories a day. I’d reduced my major Meijer runs to once a week, but we are already out of milk, bread and Kraft products. He’s been here less than 24 hours. Sweet mercy, our grocery bills are going to take a major hit.

And finally, though it doesn’t sound like a big deal to reduce a family of six by one teenager, it is. We enjoyed an entire school year of one less kid to keep track of and lose sleep over. Now that he’s back in sight, he’s unfortunately back in mind. And I’m not prepared to worry about four children again!

My baby is home from college for a 102 days. Wish me luck.

O brother, where were thou?

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie My column a few weeks ago was about a longtime friend. Now 92, Keith Bratton lives in a retirement community in HUMOR Fishers. I recounted some of his unique inventions over the years, like a urinal splash guard with Osama Bin Laden’s photo. Current in Fishers ran the article as a front-page feature.

The column was posted on a Facebook page viewed by Sarah Erdman, the daughter of Ron Bratton of Fort Wayne. Sarah forwarded the article to her dad, wondering if Keith might be a relative. When Ron read about Keith, he was pretty sure this was his long-lost half-sibling. He had never previously mentioned Keith to his family.

It had been 68 years since they last saw each other, if they had ever met at all.

Keith’s mother passed away when Keith was about 24. His father remarried, and Ron was the offspring from that relationship. The more than two-decade gap in age, coupled with Keith’s entry into the Army, resulted in a subsequent failure to connect.

Ron was planning a trip to Indy and included a stop at Keith’s senior community.

Ron approached the front desk and asked if

there was a Keith Bratton living there. The receptionist was appropriately cautious.

“Are you a relative?” she asked.

“I think I may be his half-brother,” said Ron, which sounded a little suspicious.

However, Ron was allowed entrance.

Keith was told he had a visitor, but no other clues were given about the mystery guest.

Ron introduced himself, revealing their relationship. Keith responded with a zinger: “What took you so long?”

As they reminisced, the phone rang. It was Keith’s daughter, Kim, who lives in Florida.

“So, what are you doing?” she asked.

“Visiting with my half-brother.”

“I didn’t know you had a half-brother!”

As I interviewed Keith for this story, I asked how sure he was this whole thing wasn’t a scam. Then, I got a befitting wisecrack from him: “Why would anyone admit to being my brother … if it weren’t true?”

Schools (almost) Out for 5K

SCHOOLS OUT 5K/1 MILE WALK

School won’t quite be out for this year’s Schools Out 5K May 24, but the race’s goal is still to celebrate the end of the school year and support Relay RELAY FOR LIFE for Life.

This is the second year of the family focused event. Last year, 250 people participated, raising $14,000 for the American Cancer Society when it was held on the last day of classes for Zionsville Community Schools. This year, a snow day necessitated adding a day to the school year, but the event is still near the end of school.

“We are definitely celebrating another successful year,” said Deb Torrence, Stonegate Elementary School’s wellness teacher.

Torrence participated last year and is trying to organize a team of staff members and encourage students to participate.

“My mission for the last several years has been running for children battling childhood cancer,” Torrence said. “The whole mission of School’s Out fits with everything that I’m trying to do and aspire to do.”

The 5K run winds through portions of the Cobblestone Lakes subdivision and the Zionsville Rail Trail. A 1-mile walk around Mulberry Fields is a shorter option. Registration is available for individuals or families of more than two people.

Miller to bring standup routine to The Palladium

Right now, Miller is doCOMEDY ing two weekly PodcastOne shows, a weekly TV appearance, and a syndicated twice-daily radio spot called the “Miller Minute.”

On top of that, Miller, 64, is on a standup comedy tour, which includes an 8 p.m. stop at The Palladium in Carmel May 18.

“I started a sports podcast three months ago and I got people (who) say they like the podcast but I don’t like sports,” Miller said. “So, the guy asked me if I want do the events. I’m learning even if it’s a stream-of-consciousness you have to provide some structure to it. I lack the structure now but I’m working on it.”

Miller, who had his own talk show for several years, has weekly appearances on “Kennedy” on Fox Business Channel. Miller, a conservative, previously was a regular contributor on Bill O’Reilly’s “The O’Reilly Factor.”

“I just go on because she (Lisa Kennedy Montgomery) makes me laugh,” Miller said.

“When O’Reilly got fired and that went away, I wasn’t hearing any other calls from anybody else on Fox, so I’ll go on ‘Kennedy.’”

Miller rose to prominence as an acerbic anchor for “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” from 1985 to 1991.

The standup tour is in advance of a TV comedy special for a producer, who plans to syndicate it.

“I’ve worked it out in an hour and 10 minutes,” Miller said of his routine. “I got to prune 10 minutes for the special but it’s not a lab rat situation. I got it down.”

It won’t all be political.

“Two-thirds of it is just jokes I want the audience to get belly laughs out of,” Miller said. “But once you’ve done ‘Weekend Update,’ you have to pay some attention to current events, and that’s what people have come to know you for. So, two-thirds is about making them laugh about the world we live in and one-third is about the current political times. If you live in times when you have (President Donald) Trump

After taking a break from Twitter for two-plus years, Miller uses Twitter to gauge how some jokes fare.

“I put up a joke a few weeks ago about Trump coming to California and he was booed, and, quite frankly, for Trump to be received warmly in California, he’d have to come in illegally,” Miller said. “I got like 58,000 likes. At that point you can tell you got a good joke. I do think Twitter gives you a once-removed idea if something is a good joke or not. Again, it’s tough to gauge because the country is so polarized now, some people wouldn’t laugh at

anything.”

Miller came to Indianapolis a few times to see the Indy 500 with his late friend Andy Granatelli, a legendary car owner.

The comedian also visited during his stint as a “Monday Night Football” color commentator in 2000 and 2001. Miller said the first year, 40 percent might have liked him on MNF and 60 percent hated it.

“Over two years I think I got it up to the mean line, which I considered a success,” Miller said.

In addition to his TV talk shows, Miller had a syndicated radio show from 2007 to 2015.

“Eight years and three hours a day for five days a week, I was talked out,” Miller said. “I was sick of me.”

Sun King announces restaurants editorial@youarecurrent.com Sun King Brewery has announced the four independently operated local restaurants that will fill the food BREWERY hall inside its Carmel tap room and distillery, which is scheduled to open this summer, according to a press release Sun King’s food hall will feature four, 100-square-foot food stalls designed to invoke the spirit of the Monon Railway inside the 15,000-square-foot tap room. Each unit will house a small kitchen, service counter and menu boards. Following are descriptions of the restaurant concepts and menu offerings: BEAST: Offering gourmet burgers and hand-cut fries crafted with quality, locally sourced ingredients. The Sun King Carmel tap room and distillery will be BEAST’s first brick-and-mortar location.

La Margarita: Currently operates a location in Indianapolis’ Fountain Square neighborhood. Among the menu items will be chorizo tacos featuring Mexican ground sausage, creamed corn poblano aioli, queso fresco, cilantro and onion served on blue corn tortillas.

Oca: This is the second Oca restaurant to open in a Sun King Tap Room. Developed

by Chris Eley, owner of Indianapolis’ Goose the Market and Smoking Goose, the new Oca menu includes snacks like soft Bavarian pretzels with pimento beer cheese and charcuterie tasting boards as well as unique sausages and sandwiches. Fans of the Eley Batali sandwich, named one of the nation’s best by Bon Appetit magazine, includes three types of house salumi, spicy pickled vegetables, tomato preserves and provolone.

Pi: Operates a food truck offering handcrafted, brick-oven pizza and seasonal salads. Among the menu items will be the Indiana Corn Pi featuring garlic sauce, sausage, corn, spinach, caramelized onions, jalapeños and mozzarella and provolone cheese.

“Food halls are a growing trend throughout the U.S., where the number of them grew by nearly 40 percent in 2016,” Clay Robinson, co-founder of Sun King Brewery, said in the release. “Think of our new food hall like a food court in the mall, but totally modernized with local, independent restaurants serving diverse, fresh food quickly.”

The Maiden Tower at Devin Castle Commentary by Don Knebel Devin Castle, a few miles from Bratislava, Slovakia, provides a spectacular view of the Danube River Valley. Its TRAVEL popularity is enhanced by a romantic legend about an ancient tower.

In the first century, the Danube River formed part of the northern border of the Roman Empire. To keep watch on the Germanic tribes across the river, the Romans built a tower atop a 650-foot cliff above where the Morava River flows into the Danube. In the ninth century, the Great Moravia, formed by uniting Slavonic tribes, built a castle on the site to protect its western border from the Germanic tribes that had overrun the Roman Empire. In the 13th century, the Kingdom of Hungary, which had taken over the territory of Great Moravia, expanded the castle to protect its western border from what was becoming known as Germany. Additional stone buildings, including a palace, were erected on the site, and the complex became known as Devin Castle.

In 1809, after defeating Austrian forces in

the nearby Battle of Wagram, Napoleon ordered the destruction of Devin Castle as a part of his strategy of neutralizing potential threats. During the Cold War era, the area surrounding Devin Castle was lined with barbed wire to prevent residents of Czechoslovakia from escaping to Austria.

An octagonal tower, perched on a rock below Devin Castle, is named Maiden Tower after a story about an unnamed king who held his virgin daughter in the tower to separate her from her lover. Despondent, she leapt from the tower to her death. The Maiden Tower is an important symbol of Slovakian heritage and was featured on Slovak coins until Slovakia adopted the euro. The ruins of Devin Castle and Maiden Tower, with their network of intersecting walkways, are among the most popular and most photographed sites in Slovakia.

The month of May in Indianapolis is a wonder to behold. It’s time to converge on Indycar’s most GRAMMAR GUY hallowed site, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and people can’t wait to hear the most famous words in racing: “Drivers, start your engines.”

For years, we heard “Gentlemen, start your engines,” as every driver who qualified was male. But when Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify for the Indy 500 in 1977, the starting command became “In company with the first lady ever to qualify at Indianapolis, gentlemen, start your engines.” As that was (at best) an awkward sentence to utter, the next year (when Guthrie again qualified), the command was modified to “Lady and gentlemen, start your engines.”

As more female drivers have qualified over the years, the wording for the starting command has changed. And in 2017, IndyCar and NASCAR settled on this phrase for all races: “Drivers, start your engines.”

I like this change. It mirrors official

changes that have become acceptable in English usage. For instance, last year the AP Stylebook made a significant rule change, adding “they” as an acceptable singular pronoun. According to the AP, “They/them/their is acceptable in limited cases as a singular and-or gender-neutral pronoun, when alternative wording is overly awkward or clumsy.”

So, according to the AP, clarity is key here, primarily because the word “they” has always served strictly as a plural pronoun. But, as newer, experimental gender-neutral pronouns like “xe” and “ze” haven’t yet gained popular adoption or garnered widespread awareness, “they” is acceptable, as long as it’s clear to whom the writer is referring.

As culture and language drive each other forward, rules change. Regardless of who takes the checkered flag for this year’s 500, my son and I will be cheering for a good race with clean passes and no crashes.

You’ll use assembly tools, test equipment, or pick and pack for our kitting operations. We’re looking for people with little to no experience, and training is provided.
