A second chance: Officer adopts dog he rescued from dumpster

His name is Chance. A playful, friendly dog.

You’d never guess that about two months ago he was huddled in the corner of a dumppets ster in Whitestown on a miserable, rainy night.

“It looked like he had been there for a while and had pretty much given up,” said Whitestown Police Dept. Officer John Jurkash, one of the first on the scene after a call from a family who’d heard the dog’s whimpers. “He looked defeated.”

Originally named Ray (after the dumpster), the dog was rescued and taken to a foster home to recover. But there was something about him that Jurkash couldn’t get out of his mind.

“He reminded me of my dog back at home who lives with my dad now,” the 26-year-old said.

“And before this call even happened, my wife and I had been talking about getting a dog for about a month. I am a person of faith, and I believe everything happens for a reason. So to find this poor guy who was abandoned and left for dead … it just seemed like the thing to do to give him a good home.”

But there were a few obstacles in the way.

For starters, when Jurkash and his wife, Mallory, went to visit Chance, the reception they received was anything but friendly.

“This was about a week after he was recovered and his demeanor was so untrusting of humans. He was absolutely petrified when we came in and sat around a corner looking at us,” Jurkash said. “We wanted a dog that would be loving and playful, so we were a bit skeptical and

thought that with his unfortunate trauma he was going to have some damage and be a lot harder to work with.”

The couple was also getting ready to move into a new home.

“We did not want to bring him into an environment and as soon as he got acclimated make him go through a move,” Jurkash said. “That’s stressful enough for humans, so imagine a dog.”

And, as the saying goes – time did indeed seem to “heal all wounds.”

“The day we got him he was just the opposite; he was jumping all over me and barking and really playful,” Jurkash said.

As for whoever left Chance to die in the dumpster, that’s still a mystery, Jurkash said.

“There are no leads, but the important thing is we got him rescued and he has a good home,” he said.

Towns ready to move on after land battle

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com They took the Perry Township land battle all the way to the Indiana Supreme Court, but officials from update Zionsville and Whitestown say there’s no bad blood between the towns.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak – who became the town’s first elected mayor as a result of Haak the reorganization with Perry Township – said he met with Whitestown Town Council President Eric Miller to discuss how their towns can work together in the future.

“There’s no animosity personally between us.

that Whitestown felt they had to do and so did we,” Haak said. “(Miller) and I agreed to meet on a regular basis to talk about different things.”

Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said he still “stands on its belief that the statute was misused” and that town officials may ask the state legislature to consider taking another look at the law. But he also said he didn’t feel as though the towns’ relationship was “necessarily strained” even during the court battle.

Norton “I think the negative perception comes from those antagonists on either side, people who just want to cause dissension and issues,” he said.

Now that Zionsville’s territory wraps around Whitestown on the east and west it’s even

more important for the towns to get along, he said.

“Now as a matter of fact to get to west rural Zionsville you have to go through Whitestown, so we’d better have a close working relationship,” Norton said.

Haak said he is working with Whitestown officials on various projects, including the renaming of the Rail Trail as it’s known in Zionsville and the Farm Heritage Trail as it’s known in Whitestown to The Big 4. The name change for the trail – which is planned to eventually stretch across the county – was originally suggested by a countywide group, but Haak said one reason he supports it is because it is “a fairly easy way to unify the county symbolically.”

Norton said the towns may also partner to rename County Road 700 E, which runs north and south through both municipalities.

Commission shares concerns on 200 West

By James Feichtner • james@youarecurrent.com In its fourth appearance before the Zionsville Plan Commission, the 200 West project was granted another continuance during a special meeting development May 4. The proposed 200 West project, which aims to rezone approximately four acres of land at Second and Sycamore streets and develop a mixed-use planned unit development with single-family, multi-family and commercial uses, will be brought before the June 20 plan commission meeting.

The special meeting, which brought out dozens of concerned residents, included a public hearing that lasted approximately three hours. Several members of the public voiced their opposition during the meeting, citing concerns about building size, flooding and drainage, traffic and overall architectural impact on the Village district.

Members of the plan commission shared their own concerns with the proposed PUD. Since the area in question is partially in a tax increment finance district, commissioner Kevin Schiferl expressed concerns as to whether residential development would be appropriate for the area.

“What a TIF district actually does is it keeps that money in the TIF district and doesn’t give it to the schools for a 20 to 25 year period,” Schiferl said. “So, in fact, putting residential development in a TIF district is probably one of the worst tax things that we could do as a community that values their schools.”

Plan commission vice president Jay Parks stated that the language of the PUD as presented was too vague and that the building height would not fit in with the surrounding architecture.

“I do have concerns about the PUD as written, because it is much too broad and provides too much leeway for further changes down the path,” Parks said.

Tim Ochs, an attorney representing the 200 West project, said the petitioners are open to further negotiation to address commissioners’ comments.

“This is a significant project for the town of Zionsville and it is going to be there for a very long time,” Ochs said.

“We’ve heard concerns from a number of commission members about tightening up the PUD. Certainly we would sit down, roll up our sleeves and continue to work with the town and staff to try and tighten this up.”

SPRING CARPET SALE NOW THROUGH MAY 31ST

What happened: The council approved an amendment that would allow for a fuel station at CR 700 E. and Whitestown Parkway, a use previously excluded at the site. Councilors voted unanimously in support of the change, which came with a unanimous, unfavorable recommendation from the Zionsville Plan Commission.

What it means: GetGo wants to build a facility on 2.3 acres that would include a convenience store, dining area and a fuel station. At their April meeting, plan commissioners expressed concerns about the number of fuel stations in the area. A GetGo representative told the council the facility is more modern and offers amenities not found at other nearby fuel stations.

What’s next: The project’s development plan is expected to go before the plan commission at its May 16 meeting.

What happened: The council established the position of deputy mayor.

What it means: Mayor Tim Haak said the town’s executive structure has caused some confusion.

So, he recommended changing Town Manager Ed Mitro’s title to deputy mayor to provide clarity. He also said if something were to happen that would prohibit the mayor from performing his or her duties, the deputy mayor would step into the role until a new mayor could be chosen.

What’s next: Mitro will serve as the town’s first deputy mayor. The change in title does not include a change in pay or duties. The ordinance states the deputy mayor “serves at Mitro the pleasure of the mayor,” and Haak said he has no desire to make a change.

FINANCING AVAILABLE

What happened: The council approved a waiver of the drainage ordinance for a 12-home subdivision to be built on 77 acres at Whitestown Road and CR 875.

What it means: The developer of the subdivision has been working with town officials and the county surveyor to create a drainage plan that will meet the unique needs of the area. The council voiced support for the plan and approved the waiver contingent on Boone Co. officials supporting it as well, which is expected to happen.

What’s next: The project is expected to move forward. A spokesman for the developer said the project will be a “low-impact, conservation-style subdivision” and that 11 of the 12 future homeowners will be relocating from elsewhere in town.

What happened: The council tabled a resolution for that would have created a position in the planning department and a position for the director of communications and community relations.

What it means: Town Manager Ed Mitro said he wants to be “absolutely sure” the new jobs can be financially sustained in the long term, so he asked the council to delay a vote to allow more time for officials to review the funding of these positions.

What’s next: The council is expected to vote on the matter in June.

Zionsville resident helps bring Up with People camp

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com As an Up with People alum, Zionsville resident Pau Nelson is familiar with the organization’s mission.

Up with People started in summer the 1960s when there was social turmoil in the United States.

“It started with a group of college kids who wanted to build bridges and build understanding among cultures and society,” Nelson said.

“For the last 50 years, it has been for college students.”

One of the alums started Nelson a summer camp for ages 13 to 17, a three-week program in Virginia, five years ago. Nelson said it has been successful, so the idea was to start locally with younger students. So Up with People Jr., a performing arts summer camp for ages 8 to 11, is coming to Indianapolis in June. Indianapolis was selected as one of five pioneer sites.

Nelson, who grew up in Mexico City, traveled all around the world as a UPW cast member in 1991.

“As a former teacher, I thought it was great message to bring to the kids in Indiana,” said Nelson, who has been living in Indiana for 20 years.

Nelson left teaching one year ago to work in her husband’s family business.

“The idea is to bring the camp internationally so throughout the year my kids from Indianapolis can have pen pals,” Nelson said.

“Our idea is to have our campers connected with campers all over the world. So that’s the main purpose of the camp.”

The two-week day camps, for boys and girls, will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13 to 24 at the International School of Indiana, Michigan Road campus. Nelson formerly taught Spanish at the International School and Traders Point Christian Academy.

UWP Jr., a nonprofit group, seeks to inspire the community through education, team building, community service and performing arts during the camp. UWP Jr. shows address topics such as diversity, international awareness and personal identity.

The Knights of Columbus at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church began supplying volunteers in January to provide transportation for veterans to the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Many of the veterans are unable to drive themselves, and they may need frequent visits to the hospital. So Zionsville volunteers like Tom Weintraut have been driving the veterans.

Why? “Because we owe it to them.�

The need is great. So far, they have three drivers who help drive within Marion Co., but they said they’d really like to recruit enough drivers so that they can serve veterans in Boone Co. Boone Co. is one of the few counties in the state of Indiana that does not have volunteers organized to drive veterans to the VA hospital. Brick Street Market returns

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Brick Street Market hits Main Street for the 31st consecutive year from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More than 175 exhibitors shopping from the Midwest will showcase their variety of arts and crafts.

Jewelry, clothing, pottery, metal works, a glassblower and many upcycled items will be available in the booths lining Main Street.

“It’s a pretty good variety,” said Julie JohnsCole, Zionsville Chamber of Commerce executive director. “Ceramics, woodworking, just about every media.”

The event brings 10,000 to 12,000 people annually to town.

“It’s a nice way to showcase Zionsville,” Johns-Cole said.

Visitors are encouraged to park at town hall and catch a shuttle to downtown Zionsville.

The shuttle will run from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Food trucks and vendors will be sprinkled along Main Street. Nacho Mama will return along with others selling steak sandwiches and various street fare.

Upgrade art at trunk show

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com The Original Fine Art Trunk Show will return to Main Street, coinciding with Brick Street Market.

The “affordable art” market painting is a way for people to upgrade art posters with original art, according to Rhonda Crawshaw, gallery director for CV Art and Frame, which is hosting the event.

More than 300 pieces of original paintings in different styles will be for sale from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 14. Prices range from $200 to $20,000, with an average price between $1,000 and $2,000.

“There are so many pieces in one place,” Crawshaw said.

“You can really get a feel for what your own style is,” she said, encouraging those who aren’t comfortable buying art or who don’t know their style to sift through the different options.

Based upon availability, Crawshaw is available to visit clients’ homes prior to the show to see what might work with their decor. She said she’s also willing to track available pieces a few days after the show if a client regrets not making a purchase.

All of the artwork is unframed, but Crawshaw said the framing gallery in the back of the store could help buyers choose a frame.

“Some of the artists are museum-quality artists, and some are just emerging, but all are high quality originals,” Crawshaw said. All of the artists are South American, primarily from Peru, but their art varies from landscapes to abstract.

Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served at the 100 S. Main St. store during the show.

Spring awakens old projects Commentary by Ward Degler Spring awakens something in guys. In my case, I start sniffing around unfinished projects with renewed enthusiasm for finally getting them done and plain talk scratched off my list.

My workshop, for example. Actually, it’s the garage, but in the 30-plus years we’ve lived here, no car has ever been under its roof. There’s a table saw, a workbench, a band saw, a jigsaw, a drill press and hand tools by the score, but nothing automotive except an air compressor that comes in handy for putting air in the occasional underinflated tire.

The shop has also been a convenient place to store stuff. Temporarily. Like when we have 50 people coming for Easter and five boxes of assorted stuff are sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor with no place to go. They go into the shop, “temporarily.”

“Temporarily” has now reached its statute of limitations, and I’m ready to thin the herd.

I realize that means boxes of assorted stuff will now have to find a new home. I’m considering the attic, “temporarily.”

Painting the house trim has been on the

list for a while, too. I’ve actually started a search in the shop for my paintbrushes. They’ll probably show up when I start to clean. I have already inventoried about six-dozen halfempty cans of paint. I don’t recall any of them being trim paint, however. I’m not sure what they are for, so I’ll probably keep them until I can figure it out.

Five years ago I called in a garage door specialist to install new springs on the overhead door. Sometime in the last year or so, they have come unwound and I need to have them come back and rewind them. I’ll do that right after I clear a space in the shop so they can get in.

There are gardening projects, landscaping projects, building projects complete with a barn full of lumber to see them completed, and, of course, I have several unfinished writing projects waiting in the wings.

It’s spring, and I’m hot to trot. I’ll get started any day now.

By Amanda Foust • news@currentzionsville.com Selling lemonade is traditionally one of the first ways young children experience a taste of entrepreneurship. entrepreneurs Today, Lemonade Day has become a statewide fundraiser introducing students to a world of business.

Eagle Elementary’s second-grade class and Zionsville Community High School’s entrepreneur students have partnered for the school’s first Lemonade Day Fundraiser May 13.

“We are going to set up lemonade stands throughout the high school during lunch periods and the second grade will come over to sell to the students,” ZCHS business teacher Jonathan Grismore said.

Second-grade teacher Candace Hons has let her class take the lead and plan the details of their stands.

“They have to come up with profit margins, material costs and then determine their cost for profit,” Hons said.

The funds raised on Lemonade Day go toward upgrading Eagle’s damaged playground. “(The class) did a craft show, hosted a snack stand, a bingo (event) and a garage sale,” Hons said. “They are working toward their goal of $5,595.”

also to bring the different schools together.

“I’m really excited to see all these kids experience what we are doing similarly in our curriculums,” ZCHS senior Katie Bakayasa said.

Lemonade Day is not all business. A lot of the experience is fun as well.

“I am most excited about making the lemonade and the stand because it might be really fun, and I like really fun stuff,” Eagle Elementary second-grader Henry Huffman said.

Mayor signs monarch pledge

By Amanda Foust • news@currentzionsville.com The monarch butterfly is in danger, and Zionsville leaders are on a mission to help.

Over the last several years, the nature population of monarchs has decreased because of the lack of habitat available to them.

From the time they are caterpillars, monarchs can only eat milkweed. It grows on field edges and farm corners, but it can also be planted in residential areas to help the next generation of monarchs.

Zionsville Mayor Tim Haak recently signed the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge to help raise awareness of the butterfly’s needs by naming May “Mayor’s Monarch Month.”

In his pledge Haak stated, “Cities, towns, and counties have a critical role to play to help save the monarch butterfly, and the Town of Zionsville has already played a leadership role via our native milkweed planting efforts, educational sessions and other such programs from our park department, our Zion Nature Center, as well as from similar efforts from our dedicated individuals.”

One local dedicated individual who started these habitat protection efforts in Zionsville is Elizabeth Mueller. From the time she moved

Historical book wins gold medal

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville resident and business owner Laura Town will receive the gold medal for adult fiction at the Independent author Publisher book awards May 11 to 13 in Chicago. Her historical novel, “The Renegade Queen,” tells the story of the real-life suffragist, Victoria Woodhull. While events in the book are real, some of the conversations between characters were created by Town. “(Woodhull) was an amazing woman,” Town said. “She Town was born in 1839 in poverty.

She went on to become the first female stock broker in 1870. In 1871 she became the first woman to testify in front of Congress on why women should have the right to vote based on the 14th and 15th amendments. In 1872 she became the first woman to run for president.

She ran on the equal rights party ticket. Her vice presidential candidate was runaway slave Frederick Douglass.”

Woodhull piqued Town’s interest when she was learning about the American Reconstruction Period. She began reading biographies of prominent figures during the time. She even

ZCHS grad a rising star

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Former Zionsville Community High School track standout Dylan Sorensen never gave much thought to triathlons.

That changed during his triathlon final track and field season at Georgetown University in 2014 when he was approached by 2004 Olympic triathlete Barb Lindquist from USA Triathlon.

“The way the Olympic format is set up, the runners win the races,” said Sorensen, a twotime All-American in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Georgetown. “She recruits college runners and swimmers but primarily runners she thinks might have had some swimming experience and a cycling background. I did neither of those things. She contacted me because my coach referred me to her. I’ve always been bigger as a runner at 6-2 and 170, much bigger than your average distance runner. I played basketball until high school was over. I was more athletic than your typical distance runner who is uncoordinated. She thought I could be good, and she made me believe I can be good, too.”

Sorensen, 25, who also competed in cross country at Georgetown, is ranked No. 307 in the world and hopes to be in the top 150 by the end of the year. He completed his first triathlon in July 2014 and then attended a camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., later that summer.

“I’ve been making massive improvements in my swimming,” said Sorensen, adding the cycling adjustment was easier.

Sorensen said he has been training approximately 16 months with the USA group, based in Scottsdale, Ariz. Three men and three women make up the U.S. Triathlon team. The men’s Olympic Trials are held May 15 (Sorensen’s 26th birthday) during a triathlon in Japan. If an

American gets in the top three at that triathlon, he or she automatically qualifies for the Olympics in Rio. “Only the top six Americans make that race (in Japan),” he said. “The Olympic points period is two years long. I’m way behind in the points because I’ve only been in it about a year. Unless I get in that race and get on the podium, I won’t be in the race. The good thing is I’m one of the best runners in the world for triathlon.

If I’m able to get in the race, have a good swim and am able to get in a good spot coming off the bike, there’s no reason I shouldn’t be racing for a spot on the podium.”

Sorensen said he and some others were actually brought into the group for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

“So they had a longer-term plan, but they said if everything goes well, they would love to have us go sooner,” Sorensen said.

As his condition worsened, Sally’s father, Normand Marchand, was moved to make a promise to his son-in-law.

“I said, ‘Pete, I’ll take your place up front on the tandem,’” Marchand said.

Collins died in February 2001 at 36. Four months later, Marchand, then 65, kept his promise.

Five years after that ride, Marchand completed the Lake Tahoe ride again going solo.

So on June 5, the Thorntown resident will again tackle the 100-mile scenic ride in Nevada to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Marchand had been riding bicycles since he delivered newspapers as a kid in Massachusetts. But he hadn’t attempted anything like this before.

“It did scare me,” Sally said of the first ride.

Persuasion is powerful tool In the wake of Donald Trump’s presumptive nomination for the Republican entry into the presidential election, there has come the usual analysis. It’s mostly what we expected.

In short, he wrote he believes Trump’s methods of persuasion are genius, even though Adams is not a Trump supporter. He predicted last August that Trump would win the election.

At death’s door Commentary by Terry Anker They say bad news comes in three. First, who is “they?” And second, who made “them” the arbiters of bulletin delivery? Yet, like so many of the old-saw populating our common lexicon, these often seem true. As the gloomy tidings roll in, we live in foreboding, expecting the next dark messenger to arrive. And with the appearance of the third in our unhappy trinity, we relax to enjoy our false security that the worst is over.

As is the nature of things, as we age, those we love age along with us. With the surprise passing of yet another decade, we are taking careful note of the face in the mirror but often ignore the deepening lines in the faces of our parents, grandparents, and other loved ones. We humans have a sell-by date. It is often not readily apparent, but don’t doubt its presence. Our lives can list from robust to decline in an instant.

Last week, a close friend lost her battle to a mean cancer, leaving her young daugh-

ter, despairing husband and family absent understanding. This week, a dear aunt finally let go of a life that had shifted from joy to burden – as the advancing years stripped her memories along with so much dignity.

And then, a close cousin, almost exactly my age, reached out to let us know he’d decided to discontinue his cancer treatment and hope for the best. Life, he said, was not meant to be lived as he was being forced to endure it.

While most of us, happily, will not darken death’s door for quite some time, why is it that death is so pleased to show up, uninvited, bringing the bereavement to us? With death comes longing and sadness, but also is delivered a seed of hope. Why wouldn’t we plant it?

Only two of our children inherited my ginger genes, but unfortunately, all four have what we like to call “Brithumor ish teeth.” Thankfully, modern orthodontics can easily fix cramped mouths and overlapping shark-row chompers, though it usually entails more than just braces for us Wilsons. Namely, the extraction of four or more teeth. Our oldest daughter actually had to have 11 out before donning the metal. Eleven! (That’s one louder, by the way.)

Last week, our youngest was up to bat, needing several uppers and lowers pulled, and as we did with her siblings, we supported her decision to receive mild sedation. We had fun predicting how she would react to the drugs. Our other kids have run the gamut from uncontrollable giggling at literally nothing to prolonged weeping over the perceived loss of a chin. Since Maddie tends to have a flair for the dramatic anyway, I anticipated she would lean towards the emotional.

That proved to be the understatement of the year. From the moment I helped her out of the wheelchair into the car, all the way through the Steak ‘n Shake drive-thru for the prescribed milkshake, the entire length of my run-in to CVS for painkillers, to when we pulled into the driveway 45 minutes later, this child was sobbing.

First it was because her phone was out of memory, and the planned video recording of her post-medication antics had to be scrapped. (No worries, I used mine. It’s priceless!) Next, she was upset because she couldn’t remember falling asleep, and then she became distraught because she was drooling her strawberry/chocolate side-by-side all over her shirt. Finally, she mourned the fact that she could not feel her mouth.

As her mother, I was both enormously entertained and legitimately concerned, but eventually, I was just plain exhausted. I ended up taking a nap alongside my daughter after we’d both recovered from the morning’s shenanigans Peace out.

Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Scientists now claim pecans (my favorite) may not be as healthy to consume as previously believed. Just when I think humor I’m eating the right stuff, some nut comes along and ruins everything.

Coffee was reported to be bad for us, and then studies said it was good for us. No matter, it’s all going to change again, anyway.

A health alert this week took the cake.

Cake, by the way, is not good for us, unless it’s chocolate, which has aphrodisiac qualities.

But chocolate also has caffeine, which is bad for us (unless it’s the same amount of caffeine that was good for us if we were drinking coffee before August of 2007.)

Now, I read that salmon contains too much mercury, even though it contains beneficial Omega fatty acids. I’ve been chowing down on anything that swims upstream to die: Coho, Chinook, King, Alaskan pink and sockeye. If my heart wasn’t bright red before, it is now.

Then I saw this headline last week in USA Today: FARMED SALMON MORE DANGEROUS TO EAT THAN WILD SALMON Statistics can be misleading. For example,

did they take into account that some of those people fishing for wild salmon were eaten by bears? That kind of data gets lost in those fancy university studies.

My doctor said I could eliminate salmon from my diet and instead swallow fish oil pills, which are made from Docosapentaenoic Acid.

Let’s see, lox and bagels or Docosapentaenoic Acid and bagels? There are no easy choices in life.

By the way, I never believed the findings that eating fish regularly was good for your memory. In high school, I ate fish sticks three days a week and tuna sandwiches on weekends. Then in college, I spent half my waking hours looking for my car, my spiral notebook or my wallet.

I also couldn’t find a date.

This morning, I had smoked salmon on a bagel and for dessert, a handful of chocolatecovered pecans. See you next week … if I live that long.

The Scoop honors local heroes

The Scoop’s name is designed to reflect more than the fact that it’s an ice cream shop.

Tired of negative news, fundraiser owner Elizabeth Demaree wanted to use her Zionsville shop to promote good works.

In April, she launched the Ordinary Hero Award.

The winners will have their favorite ice cream named after them for the month, and 10 percent of the profit from sale of the flavor will go to the winner’s favorite Haimbaugh charity. Their pictures will be displayed on an Ordinary Heroes wall.

For the first Ordinary Hero Award, Demaree selected her late brother, Bob Haimbaugh, who died at age 46 in February 2010. “He has been my hero my entire life, and to honor his spirit and continue his legacy just seemed like the natural thing to do,� Demaree said. “This whole Scoop is for his spirit.�

The Scoop opened at 305 S. Main St. in June 2014. Demaree said The Scoop’s mission statement came from her older brother: “To make others feel better about themselves, Zionsville, or the world in just one scoop.�

Despite becoming a quadriplegic after fall-

ing from tree stand during a hunting accident in 2000, Haimbaugh, a Carmel resident, left behind his wife, Michelle, and children, Charlie, Samantha and Patrick. “He was never, ‘Woe is me,’� said Demaree, a long-time Zionsville resident. “He touched lives.�

Bob’s favorite flavor was Mocha Chocolate, and the 10 percent of the proceeds from April went to The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation.

The May hero is Zionsville resident Lynn Eriks, who helped friends in need after being the first on the scene following a car accident in Zionsville. The family was on Eriks the way to the airport when their van was in a serious accident. “She immediately came and prayed over my children and I as we lay in pain and shock,�

Nicole Adams wrote in her nomination. “Then, before I knew it, she was loading up our suitcases in her vehicle and taking our dog to the vet to be checked out. Lynn’s presence at that very moment not only helped to calm a traumatized mother, but it allowed my husband and I to ride in separate ambulances with our children.�

Eriks said her favorite charity is International Justice Mission and favorite flavor is Scoop tracks (moose tracks).

Blood pressure: What to know Commentary by Belinda Watts, M.D. Visits to the doctor usually include a blood pressure check. It’s a routine part of medical exams because family medicine blood pressure significantly impacts our health. High blood pressure (for adults, a reading greater than 140 over 90) forces the heart to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. Blood pressure that’s too high can cause stroke, kidney disease and heart disease.

Another reason for frequent checks is people with high blood pressure often do not experience symptoms. Factors such as smoking, being overweight or obese, and physical inactivity, can increase a person’s risk of developing high blood pressure. It’s important to discuss potential risk factors with your physician. If you have high blood pressure, your doctor can suggest ways to treat it, which may include lifestyle changes and/or medication. Lifestyle modifications, such as decreasing salt and alcohol intake, increasing exercise and controlling weight may help.

On the flip side, some people have low blood pressure. While the causes of low blood

pressure aren’t entirely known, some factors, such as pregnancy, thyroid disease, diabetes, medications, dehydration and heat stroke may contribute. Chronically low blood pressure in healthy adults is not generally a concern.

However, sudden drops in blood pressure can be problematic. Depriving the brain of oxygen, drops in blood pressure can result in dizziness or lightheadedness. Some people may experience these symptoms when standing up.

Again, there are many potential causes – from specific health conditions and medications to the normal aging process. Talk with your doctor if you feel dizzy or lightheaded.

If you’re being treated for high blood pressure, it’s wise to check your blood pressure once or twice a month when you’re relaxed.

Having it checked annually and when you visit the doctor may be sufficient if your readings are consistently normal and you’re low risk.

Zika expected to be limited

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Mosquitoes B-Gone owner David Simons doesn’t expect any major outbreak of the Zika virus in Indiana.

The Zika virus is priyour health marily spread by Aedes aegypi mosquitoes.

“The reason the professionals don’t think Zika is going to make it into Indiana very much is they (the mosquitoes) don’t do winter very well,” said Simons, a Fishers resident, who co-owns the business with his wife, Angela. “They don’t continue to multiply (in cold weather). When you go to Louisiana or Florida, they multiply like crazy all year around. Therefore, they’ll get that mosquito down there a lot more than we will.”

Simons said Aedes aegypi mosquitoes are slow movers, but will likely get to Indiana.

The biggest threat is pregnant women passing the virus to their fetus, and the effects it might have. The virus has been linked to microcephaly in infants whose mother contacted the virus. Simons said adults are getting Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nervous system, from Zika.

does is inspect properties, removing breeding sites and treating. All mosquitoes lay their eggs in water.

“The Aedes aegypi breed in low grounds so they breed under your deck, in your flower pots, in your kids’ toys that have water in them, in your gutters,” Simons said.

Pool covers and tarps can also hold water, creating a breeding ground.

“It takes seven days to breed so if you get rid of that water, you’re not creating a breeding ground,” Simons said. “People forget about their bird baths. They forgot about kiddie pools.”

I loved attending Civic Theatre’s backstage exclusive of “Fiddler on the Roof.” Guests had the opportunity to be on the Civic stage and get a sneak peek at the secrets behind the scenes, which included the green room, prop room and dressing rooms. I have the opportunity to attend many exciting events and when I see something good, I want to make sure people see it. “Unnecessary Farce” is a hilarious adult comedy that will keep you in stitches all night long. It revolves around two cops, three crooks and eight doors of constant craziness.

The talented cast was superb with their comedic timing and flow cleverly directed by Darrin Murrell. It’s not a surprise that the show has received rave reviews and had a well deserved standing ovation. Go see this show before it’s gone. The show runs until May 15. Kroger lunchtime entertainment is unexpected

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Heavenly notes from a harp float through the aisles of the Carmel Kroger as a Metallica song gives way to “Hotel California” for the lunch crowd at the store’s Carmel music Bistro Cafe.

Harpist Jan Aldridge-Clark and guitarist Casey Harshbarger, who lived in Zionsville as a child, form a duet of stringed music that catches many Kroger customers off guard.

“People are so surprised when they hear the harp played in a funky way,” Aldridge-Clark said.

Harshbarger and Aldridge-Clark met five years ago through an audition. They liked the way the guitar and harp sounded together and began to experiment with different arrangements. Harshbarger influenced her to move into classic rock, which is a substantial portion of what they play to the Kroger lunch crowd, along with more recent artists, like Adele, and other styles, like blues.

Two years ago, the duo was performing a private party at which a Kroger vice president was attending.

He said, “you guys would be perfect for Kroger,’” AldridgeClark said.

When the opportunity came to fruition Aldridge-Clark was pleasantly surprised.

“No musician imagines playing in a grocery store,” she said.

But regulars come to hear them play each week, and they frequently perform to big crowds.

“We’re riding the wave,” she said. “We’ll just do it as long as they want us to be there. It’s been really great because we get a lot of positive response from people.”

They will play several days each week in May and said they hope to continue through the summer.

Aldridge-Clark earned her masters of education in classical music, and was trained on the piano, but discovered the harp her freshman year and “fell in love with it.” As a harpist, she had the opportunity to travel the world through her work with a cruise line and perform at private parties while living in Los Angeles.

One of our most popular dishes at Donatello’s Italian Restaurant is the Tortellini Michelangelo, which has cheese-filled pasta with a blush-cream sauce. For the sake of simplicity. to modify this dish at home, you can buy tortellini and tomato sauce instead of making them from scratch.

Serves: 1 to 2 people Ingredients: One cup heavy whipping cream, One third cup finely grated parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup chopped fatty bacon, 1/4 cup sliced button mushrooms, 1/4 cup diced white onions, 1/3 cup smooth tomato sauce, 2 pats butter, 12 pieces of large cheese-filled tortellini Directions: Put on a medium pot of water to boil pasta. Heat a skillet to medium heat and add butter and bacon. The melted butter and bacon grease will coat the pan, but don’t let the butter burn. Otherwise you’ll need to start over. Add onions and mushrooms, and let them sizzle in the pan until they are cooked but not wilted. You don’t want crunchy onions in your dish. Add heavy whipping cream and stir. Use a whisk to help thicken the cream using a heat reduction. Add finely grated Parmesan, and stir as you add the cheese to thicken the sauce.

Don’t turn up the heat too high, or you’ll scorch the cream and add an unwelcome flavor. Once

reduced, add the tomato sauce and stir, stir, stir. You want everything to mix together instead of separating or forming globs. You want an orange tint. You can add more or less, based on your preference, but too much tomato sauce will make for a watery thin sauce. While making the sauce, you’ll be cooking the tortellini in boiling water. Follow the time it says on the package if you bought pre-made tortellini, but generally, it should be three to five minutes.

Add the fresh-cooked tortellini to the sauce while it’s still hot, and it will absorb some of the sauce before you scoop it into a bowl. Once you’ve had success making this dish, you can try your hand at adding homemade pasta to the recipe.

Singer-songwriter Todd Carter took one look at The Warehouse and figured it was the perfect place for a homecoming. music “When I saw that space, I said, ‘This looks like an amazing place to have a concert,’” the 1987 Carmel High School graduate said. “Then I saw some of the people who have been coming through playing there. I expect it to be a really nice crowd.”

Carter and his New York City-based band, The Looking, will appear at 7 p.m. May 21 at The Warehouse, 254 First Ave. S.W., Carmel.

“A lot of people from (Indiana) have never seen me perform,” Carter said. “I’ve been in Chicago and around the East Coast, but I haven’t played in Carmel for a long time. I don’t think (I have) played there since college.”

The band recently released its fourth album, “Lead Me to The Water.” Carter describes the band’s music as a folk-pop combination.

“We’ll deliver at least 90 minutes of tunes, a couple of different sets,” said Carter, whose band is touring the Midwest in support of the album. “The Looking is my project, and I bring in people as I see fit.”

Carter, 47, was a member of the CHS 1986 Class 5A state championship football team.

His band, Bluko Chip Tones, won the CHS Battle of the Bands in 1987. Carter said he began writing songs as a teenager.

“I’ve always played in bands where we are writing our own material,” he said. “That was the main focus of each of the bands. It’s been a folk-rock focus most of the time.”

His parents, Meredith and Nellie Carter, still live in Carmel. Meredith served 32 years on the Hamilton Co. Council before retiring in 2014.

The goal was to create versatile outdoor living spaces, both covered and uncovered, for the homeowners to enjoy throughout the seasons.

1. A new, screened porch was added to the home, including matching brick border to tie into the existing home.

2. From there, the homeowners can step into their backyard onto their new concrete patio that connects to the front of the house. The brick border inlay around the concrete ties into the faรงade of the existing home.

3. A stone, wood-burning fireplace was included in the covered porch design, making a cozy place to relax after work.

4. A large built-in grill peninsula on the patio is a usable new feature, allowing the new space to be transformed into a great entertainment area.

Before Background info: This 2010-built home in the Long Ridge Estates subdivision in Westfield needed an outdoor space the homeowners could enjoy: Both in the sun and in the shade.

Before problems: The existing backyard received harsh sun in the afternoon hours and had only a small crowded deck, making it unpleasant for the homeowners to enjoy the outdoors at their own home. With no covered structure, they were also confined to the indoors during any type of rain.

The history of Arbel Pass Commentary by Don Knebel Millions of years ago, shifting tectonic plates formed Israel’s Jordan River Valley and sheared a rocky plateau just travel west of the Sea of Galilee, creating two small mountains with steep cliffs and a narrow pass between them.

This area played a role in both Jewish and Christian history.

For thousands of years, people have created dwellings in the caves on the cliff face of Mount Arbel, the southeastern of the two mountains separated by the Arbel Pass. In approximately 40 B.C., residents around the Sea of Galilee rebelled against the Roman appointment of Herod as their king. When armed rebels took refuge in the caves above the Arbel Pass, Roman troops were unable to dislodge them from below. Using ropes, they lowered troops in baskets from the flat top of Mount Arbel. The soldiers entered the caves and either threw the occupants to their deaths or set fire to the dwellings, incinerating everyone inside. Some rebels and their families jumped

to their deaths to deprive the Romans of the pleasure of killing them. The rebellion failed.

Seventy years later, when Jesus was rejected as a prophet in his home town of Nazareth, he traveled to an area on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee to establish his ministry. The road from Nazareth to Galilee went through the Arbel Pass and ended at a nearby village named Magdala, where residents raised doves for Temple sacrifices in Jerusalem. Magdala was the home of Mary Magdalene, an early follower of Jesus, falsely labeled a prostitute in the sixth century. It is possible to imagine that Jesus and Mary walked through the Arbel Pass, where an ancient well still stands aside the narrow road from Nazareth.

Many places in Israel claim to allow people to “walk in the footsteps of Jesus.” The Arbel Pass really does.
