Papa to resign from council

Murder investigation — Zionsville police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man at the Quail Run Apartments in the early hours of May 5. The victim is a black male in his early 30s.

His name had not yet been released as of press time, and police did not have any known suspects or motives.

By Heather Collins news@currentzionsville.com Jeff Papa will resign from his at-large position on the Zionsville Town Council June 30, days before he begins a town news new job with Barnes & Thornburg, the firm that serves as legal counsel for the town. On May 1, he submitted a resignation letter to Mayor Tim Haak to avoid any conflicts of interest.

Papa is the Indiana Senate’s chief of staff and legal counsel. He is leaving that job to become partner at Barnes & Thornburg, working in immigration law and representing corporate and individual clients. His new job begins July 6.

Papa said he looks forward to the opportunity to learn about and help many different organizations and individuals. He worked at Barnes & Thornburg from May 2001 to November 2007 practicing immigration law and government services after his first stint with the Senate.

“I’ve now been back with the Senate for 9 1/2 years, and the immigration practice partner is planning to retire after a transition period,” Papa said. “It is an amazing opportunity to go back to the work I enjoyed before. If I don’t take the opportunity now, it won’t likely come again.”

Papa became the first Zionsville mayor in 2015 and was town council president in 2013 and 2014. Recently, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash honor from Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Debbie Ottinger, chairman of the Boone County Republican Party, said Papa will be missed. “(Papa) is a council member who stays focused on current issues but knows the importance of planning the future of this wonderful

town,” Ottinger said. “(Papa’s) work has never overshadowed his compassion for those in need and his involvement — much of it behind the scenes and low-key — provides a positive impact to the Zionsville community.”

Papa has served on the Zionsville Safety Board and the Board of Police Commissioners.

He is the president and co-founder of Youth Enhancement and Training Initiative, which runs an orphanage in Nepal and provides assistance to underprivileged children in Indiana.

A recent special census shows explosive population growth as well as increased diversity census and youth in Whitestown.

“We are a little surprised, but pleasantly surprised, by what the special census numbers show,” Whitestown Director of Sumner Public Relations Tanya Sumner said. “We’re growing faster than we even guessed. It’s an exciting time to live in Whitestown, and families are starting to discover that we’ve been the bestkept secret on the northwest side.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of Whitestown has more than doubled from 2,867 in 2010 to 7,814 in November of last year. The report revealed that Whitestown is one of the youngest communities in Indiana, with an average age of 30.7 years. Comparatively, the median age of Boone County residents is 39 years, and the median age of Indiana residents is 35.2.

rose from 2.79 percent to 5.4 percent, and the Asian population rose from 2.93 percent in 2010 to 6.4 percent.

“It was our town council’s goal in April 2015, when we passed our Human Relations Ordinance and established our Human Relations Commission, to set ourselves apart as a welcoming and inclusive community,” Whitestown Town Manager Dax Norton said. “We’re thrilled that the U.S CenNorton sus numbers are showing that we are succeeding at attracting a growing number of residents from all different backgrounds.”

Town Council President Eric Miller said the population increase means Whitestown qualifies for nearly $1.5 million in additional state and federal funding in the next five years. Miller said the additional funds will go toward roads, trails and amenities. Miller’s goal is to make Whitestown the most walkable community in Indiana.

The census results also secure three more liquor licenses for Whitestown. Norton said the new liquor licenses will be used as an economic tool to attract more high-end restaurants and brew pubs.

Work begins on I-65 — INDOT is working on a $47.2 million project to patch and resurface I-65 between Lebanon and Lafayette from the 141 to the 165 mile marker. Nighttime lane closures will vary between the

Food pantry in need

By Chris Bavender news@currentzionsville.com The Caring Center in Boone County is looking for help. The pantry is in a “famine” stage with census supplies running low.

“We try to have a variety of nutritious things in each (food pyramid) category to choose from, but right now we have a Hanners problem with that,” said Teresa Hanners, executive director of the Caring Center. “I did it that way before it was the trendy thing to do. I wanted to address food insecurity in a different way so it benefits families and they learn to make healthy choices. We’ve been doing it that way for about 15 years. It took a lot of research, but now it’s a well-oiled machine.”

Hanners said the ebb and flow of donations is typical; They are higher around the holidays but tend to fall off after that.

“It is kind of what happens to us every year, but I am noticing some changes this year,” she said. “Normally, donations of green beans are 10 to 1 over other items,

but I am almost out of them, which is really crazy.”

Other items the pantry needs are: • Spinach • Pineapple • 100 percent fruit juice • Cooking oil • Evaporated milk • Powdered milk • Cereal • Pudding The Caring Center serves about 400 families each month. Last year, the pantry collected more than 160 tons of food and distributed all of it.

“We try to really impact families in a bit of a different way and really focus on where they are and help stabilize them and create a path to self-sufficiency,” Hanners said.

Hanners is asking residents to pick up a few extra items each time they go to the grocery store and donate them.

“If everyone in Boone County bought a few extras for us each week, it would make our lives so much easier and it would help people,” she said.

Scholarship honors ZLL volunteer

During the 2017 season-opening night ceremonies, Zionsville Little League announced the establisheducation ment of the Judy Veatch Scholarship in honor of the longtime ZLL volunteer.

Each year, the $500 scholarship will be awarded to a female high school senior at Zionsville Community High School who participated in Zionsville Little Leage for at least three years.

“As president of ZLL, I was very touched by the graciousness and generosity of the Veatch family,” ZLL President Mike Rinebold said. “It was important that we, as a league, choose a very special way to honor Judy’s memory. We feel the scholarship does just that by continuing Judy and Don’s longtime devotion to ZLL and extending it to touch even more lives into the future.”

Veatch died in June 2016. Her three children all participated in ZLL, and she continued volunteering, along with her husband, Don, for many years after their children left ZLL.

Creekside trail now open

By Renee Larr • news@currentzionsville.com The Creekside Corporate Park Trail System is now open to the public. The 1-mile paved trail is open from pathways dawn to dusk and is accessible from W. 106th Street, S. Main Street and Creek Way. The conservation office park was built to attract corporations that want to be in a nature-like setting.

“It’s really the only conservation office park in the regional area where there are corporate headquarters as well as office buildings that are being built amongst ravines and woodlands,” said Amanda Dorman, Zionsville director of communications and community relations.

With the town committed to keeping 25 of the 41 acres of developable land as green space, Creekside Corporate Park includes a one-acre pocket park, a shelter and table, half basketball court, bike rack and more.

“There is something I think that is really unique to Zionsville and the area: a stretch station. There are different pieces of exercise equipment on really soft, rubbery ground so you can walk the trails and use some of this equipment for plyometrics and

stretching,” Dorman said.

Dorman said the site offers a unique office park setting.

“I think it’s going to make coming to work a lot more exciting for the people that are working in this park,” she said. “They have these trails right outside their door. A lot of office parks don’t have a lot of green space.”

The park is the first in the area to use low-impact development for its stormwater system.

“It results in little stormwater being discharged off the property,” Dorman said. “It’s not used often due to the cost, but in the long run it will prove to be beneficial.”

USPS to collect food this week editorial@youarecurrent.com On May 13, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service and philanthropy other partners are asking residents to help Stamp Out Hunger. The annual postal food drive has grown into a national effort that provides assistance to the millions of Americans struggling to put food on the table.

According to Local NALC Branch 888 President Ronnie Roush, the need for food donations is great. Currently, 49 million Americans – 1 in 6 – are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Thirteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. More than 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes.

Roush stated that food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs

are not available to children in need.

With the help of communities across the country, letter carriers and the U.S. Postal Service have collected more than 1.5 billion pounds of food in the United States during the first 24 years of this national food drive.

“We’re proud of this food drive and the immediate help it brings to our local food pantries. We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful food drive. It’s easy to make a donation; simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on May 13 to help your neighbors in need,” Roush stated.

To participate in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing nonperishable food items, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery May 13. Letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver mail and take them to local food pantries.

“One hundred percent of the food collected in each community will be donated to a local food pantry. All donations stay in the local area,” Roush stated.

Teen Academy registration open

Teen Academy, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs public safety of Zionsville and Zionsville Parks Dept., is accepting applications for its summer program scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 5 to 9. The purpose of the academy is to provide teens with a better understanding of police officers and help strengthen the relationship between the department and the community.

“It is just an amazing opportunity for not only the young people to see what we do, but we get so much out of it as well,” ZPD Chief Robert Knox said.

The academy was started in June 2009

by Knox when he was a captain, along with Sgt. Sam Dennemann. Class sizes have ranged from eight to 10 students to more than 40 cadets since its inception.

“We wanted to reach out to the young people of the community and let them know we are not bad people and that we really do care,” Knox said.

Get messy for a mission

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com Zionsville Presbyterian Church will host the fifth annual Messy Mission Run at 9 a.m. May 13 at Nancy fundraiser Burton Memorial Park.

As the name implies, the goal is to get a little messy during the run, a fundraiser for ZPC’s summer mission trip.

The race is designed to be family friendly and noncompetitive.

“It’s unique in the fact that it is a trail run but also incorporates the color element in it,” said Kelly Antcliff, a ZPC parishioner.

“I think the kids love running on the path, jumping over the tree limbs and getting a little dirty along with getting the color thrown on them throughout the course.”

The cost to attend is a $30 suggested donation, which includes a race T-shirt that becomes colored when powder is thrown on it. The donation includes snacks after the race. Approximately 100 people are expected to participate.

“Last year the rainy conditions caused the race to turn into more of a mud-color run, but it was fun. Obviously, so much this time of year is weather-dependent, but

we’re hoping for a great turnout. Certainly, you don’t need to attend ZPC to participate,” Antcliff said.

Proceeds go toward funding a mission trip to Mexico June 5 to 12.

ZIP makes history Submitted by Christina Faulkner Zionsville Indoor Percussion made history by becoming the first school to win three consecutive achievement state titles when it took the top prize at the Indiana Percussion Association Class A competition last month in Terre Haute.

This year’s show, “The Hive,” featured music from “Flight of the Bumblebee” by Rimsky-Korsakov, “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees and “Imma Be” by the Black Eyed Peas.

The group participates in two competition circuits: IPA and Winter Guard International.

“My philosophy is to develop individual discipline through percussive studies. The students learn that if they have a strong work ethic, they can get results they want,” ZIP Director Orion Avery said. “I’m really proud of these kids. They put in a lot of hours, a lot of hard work and effort, and when you watch the performance, it shows.”

After achieving their goal winning state this year in the IPA circuit, the group focused all of its attention on the world competition stage in late April in Dayton, Ohio.

Indiana in A-Class: Southport, Hamilton Southeastern, Carroll and Zionsville. The remaining 60 competitors were from ensembles from across the nation.

“It’s really cool getting to know percussionists from other schools,” junior Madison Smith said. “We’re rivals in competition, but we really respect each other. We know how much work it takes to put on these shows. It’s great getting to know so many musicians that have the same passion for music that we do.”

After prelims, Carroll and Zionsville advanced to compete in the semi-finals. After semi’s, only Zionsville earned a chance to compete in the finals. Seeded 13th out of the top 15 groups remaining, Zionsville ended the competition in 10th place.

I still have emotional ties to a girl named Pat Bishop. They stretch back to high school when I first met plain talk her. Pat was the first girl I dated after I got my driver’s license. It was also my first date with Pat. We went to the drive-in theater. I realized later it would have been better if we had double-dated. That would have given both of us someone else to talk to.

There was never any problem driving with someone sitting beside me in the front seat. After all, I was busy dodging traffic and shifting gears.

But sitting inert for two hours side-byside at the drive-in was something else entirely. We both pretended to be interested in “Selected Short Subjects” when it came up on the screen. Ditto the newsreel. Our laughter at the cartoon lacked enthusiasm.

I went to the snack bar twice for drinks and popcorn. We both worked at small talk.

Still, the silences between us were twice as long as the chatter. It was odd because we never had a problem talking at school.

Of course, we were never alone in the library or the lunchroom.

with the speaker on the window in an effort to get the volume right.

As the evening wore on it got chilly. I started the car to warm things up. In between warm-ups, Pat pulled her sweater tighter around her shoulders. I dug myself deeper into my seat.

When the movie was mercifully over, I started the car and drove away without first returning the speaker to its stand. It broke the window and dropped the speaker into my lap.

I drove Pat home that way, afraid to comment on the evening or the dramatic finale.

She thanked me for a lovely evening and disappeared. We never went out again.

Pat and I finished high school and went our separate ways. I heard she moved to Alabama and married an Army helicopter pilot. I never heard anything after that.

Going to the drive-in became routine entertainment over the years. In the 1950s there were more than 4,000 drive-in theaters across the country. Surprisingly, there are some 300 still operating.

I wonder if nervous first-timers still drive off with the speakers.

Vendors preparing for opening of 20th annual Zionsville Farmers’ Market 2017 Zionsville Farmers’ Market Special Events

By Heather Lusk • news@currentzionsville.com Two decades ago, a small group came together to create a farmers’ market in Zionsville.

“I had a vegetable garden cover story but realized I’d rather go to a farmers’ market than grow my own,” said Barb Munson, who presented the idea to the Zionsville Town Council in January 1997. “It was approved, and boom, all of a sudden it’s February and growers have already planned what they’re going to grow.”

Because there were few farmers’ markets at the time, Munson said she was able to find 19 vendors to sell produce and flowers.

This year, 45 vendors will offer fruits and vegetables, along with a wide variety of meats, pasta, peanut butter, shrimp, cheese and honey. Visitors can grab baked goods, coffee or prepared items for breakfast while they shop. Besides edible wares, other vendors sell a range of plants, from perennials to vegetables.

“We want it to be a cook’s market,” Market Master Sara Martini said. “That’s our philosophy. You can find ingredients you need to make dinner that night.”

Mike and Judy Woodburn have been selling their produce in Zionsville since opening day 20 years ago.

“Within the first couple of hours I sold out and could have sold more,” said Judy, a NoblesWoodburn ville resident who also sells pasta and honey at the booth.

Six new vendors will join the market this year selling eggs, bacon, produce and Wagyu beef.

Martini said the market is at capacity, and organizers are not planning to add more booths.

“We value quality vendors over quantity,” she said.

Elizabeth Hermann, who has been selling items at the market since 1998, appreciates Zionsville’s market size.

“Vendors start struggling when it gets too big,” she said. “Zionsville just does a really good job.”

Initial restrictions ensured that produce was grown by the seller versus importing products.

While ensuring a quality product, it also requires the farmers to plan what they will sell for the following year soon after the market ends.

what we’re going to grow and how much in the fall,” Hermann said.

Managing the market

The market is managed by a volunteer board of directors, with a volunteer music coordinator and paid market master, who manages the vendors and event each week.

Jane Smith, one of the original committee members, said the initial group handled all volunteer duties the first year before the role of market master was established.

“We realized we needed someone to be responsible for Saturday mornings,” said Smith, who was the first to hold the role, which began as a volunteer position.

For the past 10 years, the market master has been a paid position because the committee recognized the amount of time the job required.

“When we paid the market master, that’s when we started to expand what we were doing,” committee member Ellen Butz said. That’s around the time that the market began selling T-shirts at cost with witticisms such as ‘The Beet Goes On’ and ‘Give Peas a Chance’ to help advertise.”

Making connections

Rumors have swirled about the future of the market’s location with the possibility of the town selling the parking lot that has been the market’s home for 20 years. The town purchased the property in 2013 to maintain control over the intersec-

tions around Sycamore, Main and First streets and Zionsville Road.

Amanda Dorman, director of communications and community relations for Zionsville, said there are no plans to do anything with the site beyond current operations.

The market has always been in the parking lot at the corner of Main and Hawthorne streets, an ideal spot from the perspective of the first Farmers’ Market committee.

“It was the fact of Main Street being such an integral part of Zionsville’s character, right there at one of the entrances of Zionsville,” Munson said.

“We were embraced by (local businesses), particularly after the first season.”

The market is a boon to merchants, bringing visitors to Main Street on Saturdays, and many businesses take advantage of the additional customers.

“So many downtowns are dead,” Smith said.

“But Zionsville is pretty bustling on Saturday mornings, and that’s nice.”

Main Street business owner and original committee member Drew Kogan agrees.

“It’s fun to see people out and about,” he said.

“It brings local people back downtown.”

“We just want Main Street to be lively. We want the community to connect,” Martini said. “That’s what the market is all about, connecting farmers, the community and our neighbors.”

The market is open every Saturday beginning May 13 from 8 to 11 a.m. through September.

Commentary by Terry Anker The rise of the machines has been a theme of science fiction writers since the beginning of the genre. We invest in our mechanical devices, hoping that they will someday come to serve our every need, all the while failing to notice our own growing dependency. With comfort comes complacency. And with complacency comes our subjection to the very devices we create to serve us.

Yet with each new generation of innovation, we humans have found sufficient ways to stay on top of the food chain. We have mastered pony cars just as we had mastered ponies centuries before. Our obsession with dominating them – all with the intention of capturing their practical use – ultimately leads to a relationship of a more symbiotic nature. We protect and care for them even as they protect and care for us.

Now, technology moves with ever-increasing velocity. Our capacity to learn and develop dominion over it is strained. With generations of smartphones replacing the old before we have figured out a modicum of their features, we are continually left to feel as if the technology has finally outpaced our ability – that we are the inferior.

We revert to previous known methods to gain footing.

There was a time, not that long ago, that automobiles were mechanical devices. If one failed to start, some human would tinker a bit with hand tools and experience to restore its life. Today, a wire is attached to the car’s brain to ask it what might be wrong. What if failure or impact has rendered it with a car-cussion so that it forgets its mission to serve us? Well, we could walk. And would we have a choice?

Although stroke has fallen from the third-leading cause of death in this country to fifth, its devastating effects make stroke the leading cause of long-term disability.

Fortunately, many of the risk factors for stroke are controllable by making better lifestyle choices when it comes to our diet and exercise.

Something we can all be aware of is our blood pressure. Overall, one in three Americans has high blood pressure, and African-Americans in particular have the highest blood pressure in the world.

Seventy-five percent of people who suffer a first stroke have blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm HG. The American Heart Association considers normal blood pressure to be 120/80.

What can you do this month? First, get your blood pressure checked. If it’s higher than 120/80, talk with a doctor about how to bring it back into the normal range. Sometimes that will require medication, but sometimes a healthier diet and more physical activity are all that is needed.

I won’t lie. I’m extremely nervous right now. My husband Doo made me sign up for a stupid triathlon, and while humor it seemed like a great idea back in January, with the race just hours away, I feel like my bowels are in full revolt. And the weird thing is, this is not my first one. Nor my second. So why is my adrenaline kicking in like I woke up to a zombie apocalypse?

For sure, some of the nerves can be attributed to my competitive nature. I told Doo several years ago that he will never beat me because, unlike him, I am willing to die before I lose to someone I shouldn’t. I’m not kidding. I call it “athletic brinkmanship,” and I am deeply committed to its tactics.

Blister? Ignore it. Dehydrated? Keep going.

Signs of heat stroke? Suck. It. Up. Triathlons in particular are as much a mental game as physical, and compared to moms, men simply can’t get close. Advantage, me. And my man only recently gave up smoking and became a “runner,” which means unless I am struck down with a stomach bug, he’s not going to finish ahead of me (actually, that happened once and I still beat him!).

But he’s been training hard, ran a marathon in the fall and is a much better biker than me. I hate to admit it, but I think he has a chance today. And I don’t really want to die, especially not in a swim suit/bike short hybrid. So now the question is, if Doo can do it today, can I rise above my arrogance and smack talk and truly be happy for all that he’s accomplished? Can I be the gracious good loser and celebrate his success? I like to think I can, but I’m not entirely positive.

And that has me worried. Much more than running this stupid triathlon.

Ugh. I need a toilet. Peace out.

Stinging commentary Commentary by Dick Wolfsie The newest edition of the “Hammacher Schlemmer” gift catalog is packed with previously advertised items humor they still can’t unload (which I have probably made fun of in past columns) along with some brand new items I am about to skewer.

This spring’s catalog cover features a Hypnotic Jellyfish Aquarium. It contains “two synthetic jellyfish that provide mesmerizing ambience.” That doesn’t seem like it would be soothing. Live jellyfish use their tentacles to defend against predators by emitting deadly toxins in a painful sting. Maybe they used leftover copy for last year’s flop, the Teddy Bear Aquarium.

The customary introductory letter from their chairman, John McArthur, welcomes you to his world of unique products. Although Mr. McArthur does not have a gift for writing, he makes up for it with about 200 gifts in other areas, like inside the magazine.

Hammacher reveals its obsession with mosquitos by offering seven items specifically for the purpose of avoiding bug bites, including the Mosquito Defeating Sports Chair ($79.95).

An attractive couple sits next to each other in their respective chairs, enclosed head-to-toe in netting. HS apparently borrowed this sexy marketing idea from the Cialis commercials. Not nearly as romantic as side-by-side outdoor bathtubs, but it does make a lot more sense than outdoor bathtubs. On a positive note, wearing protection always sets a good example.

If you need a gift for the dog that has everything, the Anti Ant Moated Bowl stops invasions of “kibble-craving ants.” The bowl has a moat surrounding the food. What a waste of money! It takes most dogs less than 20 seconds to snarf down their meals.

Even if ants had cellphones, they couldn’t spread the word that fast.

Finally, The Suction-Powered Sinus Decongestor, which removes congestion by flushing a saline rinse through one nostril, then out the other. It’s perfect for anyone with breathing problems. It could also be used to drown ants.

Kanagaroo-a-thon hops back

Urgent care clinic closes

Kanagroo-a-thon will return for its second year in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North Hospital awareness in Carmel.

Kangaroo care is a method that involves skin-to-skin contact. Parents hold their child, clothed only in a diaper, against their bare chest with a small blanket covering the child’s back. Kangaroo-a-thon encourages this method by tallying how long families can hold their baby over a two-week period.

The goal is to promote awareness of the benefits of skin-to-skin contact and start making those benefits a reality for families in the NICU. Lynn Jenkins, RN, a nurse in the NICU and co-chair of Kangaroo-a-thon, brought the event to the hospital two years ago after hearing about it at an international conference in Florida.

“We already encourage skin-to-skin holding, so we wanted to take it over the top with our two weeks of tallying and keeping track of how often they are hold-

ing babies skin-to-skin because of all the positive benefits for the families and the baby,” Jenkins said.

Skin-to-skin contact reduces parental stress, increases parent and infant bonding, decreases postpartum depression, improves a child’s sleep cycle which stimulates brain development, increases a child’s weight gain and much more.

Last year, the hospital tallied 544 hours of skin-to-skin contact between parents or grandparents and infants.

This year’s goal is to reach an average of 3.5 hours per day and to find one family who can hold their baby for 24 hours straight.

The contest will last until May 15.

The IU Health Zionsville Urgent Care clinic at 6866 W. Stonegate Dr. closed April 30. Officials said the update closure was for “business reasons.”

IU Health is refining its geographic footprint for its Urgent Care locations.

Body Outfitters plans to fly south

The business will be in South Village at 575 South Main St., in an area previously occupied by Wildcat Creek Outfitters. The new space will be 5,500 square feet versus 3,000 square feet at its current location.

“When I saw it on paper I originally thought it was too big,” owner Mark Moreland said. “But when I walked in there, it doesn’t feel big. Staying small has always been our goal.”

Moreland said being able to offer more parking with additional showers for customers was important.

Moreland opened Body Outfitters in 2010 and employs seven trainers serving approximately 300 clients with the ability to add three additional trainers in the future.

“I feel like it was time for us to move out where we didn’t need the walk up traffic,” he said.

Moreland grew up in Zionsville and finds it “surreal” that he’s able to build his business in his hometown.

“I couldn’t have written that story,” he said.

Tom Wood Toyota broke ground on a new facility in Zionsville after 41 years in its Lafayette Road location. “It’s about time for a move,” said Jeff Wood, president of the Tom Wood Automotive Group.

ZCHS show choir ‘Finale’ set

Zionsville Community High School senior Jessie Hilton is certainly glad she is not missing this “Finale.”

“It’s really fun to get one last perforperformance mance with everyone,” said Hilton, a member of the Royalaires show choir. “I wasn’t able to perform last year because I was out with an (ankle) injury, so it was rough sitting out and watching everyone, but it’s good to be back in it.”

The Royalaires, the male and female show choir, and Choralaires, the all-female choir, will perform in the annual “Finale” at 7 p.m. May 12 and 13. The evening show runs approximately 2 1/2 hours.

New this year is a 2 p.m. matinee May 13 that will be approximately 90 minutes.

“It’s for younger children or people that don’t like to be out late at night,” said Aaron Coates, performing arts department chair.

“We have a history of selling out, so we wanted to add a show.”

Coates said the show will include group numbers and feature acts.

The production will include routines the groups did during the competition season in February and March.

“I’m looking forward to having the feeling of being on stage again. It’s been awhile since we performed all together,” senior Choralaires member Laila Haydar said. “Now it’s the mega-thing with everybody. It’s really cool to perform with the Royalaires, too.

it’s been a fun two years to have.”

Cade Williams, a junior with the Royalaries, said this is a good way to show the community what the choir members have learned all year.

“It’s always fun to perform the competition show because that’s been what we’ve put the most focus on,” Williams said. “We put it at the end of the show, so we close with a big bang.”

Hilton said she likes the ballad “Oh Shenandoah” the group performed during competition season.

“Singing the ballad is always really emotional,” Hilton said.

They’re having a ball doing this. The dwarfs are mostly freshmen. They were cast on their personalities and at their audition, they had to be sleepy and all that.

We have some good little actresses among the dwarfs.”

Where’s Amy stopped by the VIP Reception for the Deborah J. Simon Spotlight - Art for an #HIVFreeGeneration at Clowes Hall. Guests included David Hochoy, Jordan Anderson, Alyona Yakovleva-Randall, Wilmara Manuel, Frank and Katrina Basile, Peter Slaymaker, Alpha Blackburn, Jason Grisell, Kathy Campbell, Jamie Gibbs and Paco Argiz. The annual event is known for it’s onenight-only, performing arts extravaganza performed by local arts organizations and friends of the arts. All proceeds from the show benefitted Indiana AIDS Fund, a fundraising program of the Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis. The night was filled with dancing, laughter and love. Every performance had a purpose and meaning, and I was particularly taken aback by Dance Kaleidoscope’s beautiful performance of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” It was a magical night where everyone came together for an important cause that celebrated life through eyes of the arts. BTI to present ‘Cinderella’

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Presenting Sergei Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” provides some challenges for the Ballet Theatre of Carmel at performance Performer’s Edge.

“All cast members are enjoying the challenge of not only mastering the demanding dance steps to Prokofiev’s unique music but also embracing the opportunity to hone their acting, pantomime and comedic timing skills,” Artistic Director Jane Hachiya-Weiner said.

The pre-professional ballet company will present “Cinderella” at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. May 13 at Westfield High School Auditorium.

Natalie Heinemeyer, a Westfield resident, is playing the Fairy Godmother and understudy to Cinderella.

“I love the music, costume and choreography of the Fairy Godmother,” Heinemeyer said. “Sometimes during rehearsals, I’ll be learning the Fairy Godmother role and Cinderella at the same time. It can be exhausting, but I am privileged to be the understudy to two amazing dancers, Lacy Marsh and Erica Lohman.”

Heinemeyer, a homeschooled eighth-grader, will attend the Washington Ballet Summer Intensive.

Blueprint for Improvement: two-story master suite addition Commentary by Larry Greene

The goal was to design a two-story addition with a master suite on the main level and a large craft room below.

1. The 360-degree proportions and materials of the home were studied to ensure the new addition looked original to the home.

2. The new master suite connected through the existing library, giving an extra layer of privacy.

This retreat included a large bedroom, walk-in closet and wheelchair-accessible bathroom.

3. Master bath amenities included a roll-in shower and a double-sink vanity with lower convenience outlets.

4. Carefully selected finishes reflect the warm color palette of the rest of the home, with stained trimwork, stone textures in the tile and hardwood flooring.

5. A fun, highly functional craft room was designed in the lower part of the addition and connected to the existing basement.

Before Background Info: These owners needed a design solution to age in place in their 1990s home in the Claybridge neighborhood of Carmel.

Before problems: Although they cherished their existing home and neighborhood, these owners were faced with the tough decision to move or make their home work for aging in place.

Thinking long-term, their decision led them to a design for their home that created a much-needed master suite on the main level to avoid the many stairs that provided access to all of the original bedrooms.

Agra Fort and its harem Commentary by Don Knebel Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan is best known for having built the Taj Mahal to honor his wife. The nearby travel Agra Fort shows that she was not his only source of companionship.

In 1628, Shah Jahan became the fifth Mughal Emperor, controlling much of the Indian subcontinent from his capital in Agra.

Soon after assuming the throne, Shah Jahan renovated a walled fort that had been built by his grandfather, Akbar the Great, on a 100-acre site along the west bank of the Yamuna River. Shah Jahan replaced many of the red sandstone structures with more ornate ones made of white marble. He built the lavish Khas Mahal to serve as his sleeping chamber. A short walk from the Khas Mahal he built a jeweled octagonal tower named Musamman Burj as the residence for Mumtaz, the second of his three wives.

The Khas Mahal opened onto a large foursection garden flanked on three sides by a two-story dormitory that served as Shah

Jahan’s harem, where female employees and relatives and the emperor’s concubines were housed. Estimates of the number of women in Shah Jahan’s harem range from 200 to several thousand, guarded by eunuchs and managed by the emperor’s mother. Members of the harem were expected not only to provide sexual favors to Shah Jahan on demand, but to sing and dance for his pleasure. Shah Jahan also reportedly used members of his harem as pawns on a huge Parcheesi board constructed near his chamber, where he moved the pieces while sitting under a canopy.

Despite the many women in his harem, Shah Jahan was devoted to Mumtaz. When she died during the birth of her 14th child in 19 years, he built the Taj Mahal as her tomb, located along the Yamuna River and visible from a room in the Musamman Burj.

Position: Protective Order Advocate Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time Protective Order Advocate responsible for assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders. Also responsible for completing intake paperwork, completing safety plans, referring clients to ongoing services within the agency and completing 24 hour crisis line shifts.

Duties: Assessing and assisting clients with completing protective orders.

Working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

Serving as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

Completing 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy centers as scheduled and approved by the Adult Advocacy Supervisor.

Collaborating with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development. Salary commensurate with education and experience (starting salary - $16/hour).
