New DNA law effective early

By Desiree Williams news@currentzionsville.com Senate Bill 322, a law enacted Jan. 1 that requires a DNA sample from all felony arrestees, has already matched the new STATE samples to dozens of previous cases through the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Prior to Jan. 1, officers only collected DNA samples from convicted felons.

Boone County law enforcement officials, including Meyer, Boone County Sheriff Mike Nielsen and Zionsville Police Chief Robert Knox, were instrumental in the passage of SB 322. They proposed the bill after the murder of 82-year-old John Clements in Zionsville. Nielsen said matching a DNA sample from the scene to a sample in Ohio was the only reason the case was solved, which led to the arrest of Damoine Wilcoxson in 2016.

In April, the Indiana State Police Laboratory released data detailing the effectiveness of the law from Jan. 1 to March 31.

On May 12, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service and other partGIVING BACK ners are asking residents to help Stamp Out Hunger during its 26th annual food drive.

Letter carriers and the USPS have collected more than 1.6 billion pounds of food nationwide in the past 25 years.

In total, 49 million Americans — an estimated 1 in 6 — are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Thirteen-million are children.

More than 5 million seniors, 60 and older, are food insecure. Many live on fixed incomes.

“We’re proud of this food drive and the immediate help it brings to our local food pantries,” NALC Branch 888 President Ronnie Roush said. “We’re asking residents for their support to help make this another successful food drive. It’s easy to make a donation; simply leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox on May 12 to help your neighbors in need.”

Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.

Letter carriers will collect the donations when they deliver the day’s mail. All of the food collected in each community will be donated to a local food pantry.

PVE to debut documentary

“I learned that immigrants have an interesting story and how hard it is to come to the country, because when I interviewed them they said when they came here they lost some of their money,” Brown said.

The project, Our Town of Immigrants, was started by PVE fourth-grade teacher Cindi Hamlow, who raised money for two iPad Minis to produce the documentary.

The documentary will debut at International Night May 10 at Pleasant View Elementary, 4700 S. 975 E., Zionsville. The documentary will start at 6 p.m. and will run continuously through International Night, which is open to the public.

“To me, the most important thing that the students learned was that all of the immigrants that we interviewed came to the United States seeking the same kinds of opportunities that U.S.-born citizens seek,” said Hamlow, a Zionsville resident. “Some immigrants were seeking educational oppor-

tunities, some were seeking opportunities to further their careers and some were seeking the opportunity to live with a loving family.”

The documentary was made by Hamlow’s class and another class taught by David Gay, who is an immigrant from Barbados.

Chetan Dave and his wife, Dharati, both from India, were interviewed. They have three students in Zionsville Community Schools, including Nandaj, in third grade at Pleasant View.

Dave said he is eager to see the finished documentary. He said the process should help the students.

“I think it will definitely give them different perspective in life,” Dave said.

SPJ honors Current cartoonist

Current Publishing cartoonist Tim Campbell has done it again.

Campbell, a Carmel resident, AWARD won the best editorial cartoon for the fifth consecutive year and seventh overall at the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2017 Best of the Best in Indiana Journalism banquet April 27. The winning cartoon was on the situation in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. He also received third place in the same category.

“What I’m honored most about this award is that it’s judged by professional journalists from states outside of Indiana,” Campbell said. “I’m assuming this is done to eliminate any bias towards publications or individuals. It’s simply about the work itself.

I do enter one or two other national contests each year, but the Indiana SPJ award is special because I’m a Hoosier by birth (from Indianapolis). I believe the values this state and my family have taught me is on occasion reflected in my work.”

New Hope celebrates 40 years, readies for future with Zionsville resident at helm

“What kind of job do you get to be a part of people’s lives?” said Wharry, a Zionsville resident and NHI chief executive officer. “You can’t have a bad day when you come to New Hope.”

NHI serves people with disabilities and their families at its main Indianapolis facility and brings those services to homes. Through additional offices in Glendale and Castleton, it provides classes and therapy to clients in other parts of the city.

Zionsville resident Lynne Marubashi’s adult son, Mark, who has autism, is among several local residents serviced by New Hope. Her son participates in communitybased services, allowing him to enjoy weekly leisure activities such as bowling or visiting a park with a young men’s group. Marubashi noticed a difference in her son’s social behavior after he began participating almost three years ago.

“Being social is not one of his strengths,” she said.

“This has really helped him communicate with these young men.”

Through the group or one-on-one assistance, her son is able to visit destinations that he otherwise might not be able to.

“It’s good for everyone,” Marubashi said, adding that her son makes eye contact when at a store or restaurant, which didn’t always happen a few years ago. “They have to learn to have appropriate behavior and conduct.”

Mark Marubashi, a Zionsville Community High School graduate, was first introduced to the program through school, but demand was so high he was on the wait list for several years.

NHI celebrated its 40th anniversary March 13 and hosted a formal fundraiser, A Silver Cup Celebration, May 3.

In 1978, six individuals arrived on the northwest side of Marion County to a facility originally built as a residence for children with cerebral palsy. By the end of the year, the facility served 115 clients.

That number grew over the next decade, but the organization struggled financially until St. Vincent took over management in 1988. In what was revolutionary at the time, leaders recommended that people with disabilities live in the community instead of separate facilities.

The organization’s mission is to provide a loving, supportive environment for individuals they serve through therapy and counseling programs. Facility staff members work with clients to determine their goals and how to reach them. Each day, individuals can see what activi-

ties they’re able to enjoy that day, who else will be in their group and which staff members will lead their group. Classes may include art, music or outings like a museum, usually based on clients’ interests. Often, they do activities in the community like Meals on Wheels or assisting in a community garden.

Wharry initially heard of New Hope when her niece received residential services from the organization. Wharry eventually worked for St. Vincent as a lobbyist and was asked to serve as the hospital’s appointed board chair for New Hope, something she was proud to do because of her niece.

A few years ago, administrative changes at St. Vincent left Wharry without a job at the same time the CEO role opened at NHI. “It’s just interesting how your path gets somewhere,” she said.

Her role has allowed her to witness firsthand the program making a difference in people’s lives. One woman refused to talk until she spent time with a therapy dog on staff. Another young man with a goal to work at the Fashion Mall became the first person with a disability hired by Urban Outfitters.

“New Hope changes people’s lives, but it’s fun to see it when you’re walking down the hall at the Fashion Mall,” Wharry said.

“I think it will be an exciting pre-vocational program so they can learn some skills and introduce some people with disabilities to the community at large,” Wharry said.

Wharry said NHI’s services are broad compared to other programs in Indiana, such as the Arc of Boone County.

“That was our genesis. We provided everything from Day 1. It just made sense for us to continue to provide everything, because that’s all we ever knew,” Wharry said.

Through the decades, the core vision hasn’t changed at NHI. “New Hope is one of those places where you see it at work every single day here,” Wharry said.

Commentary by Terry Anker It was an Evening in Paris. This time the City of Lights dutifully was replicated in the Culinary Arts Center on Ivy Tech’s bustling Indianapolis Campus. Replete with the Eifel Tower, tasty treats, comfy cafes and a noted cabaret singer (thanks to local standout talent Gail Payne), the festive nature of the event belied the intentionality of the cause underlying it.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the gala funds study-abroad opportunities for culinary students to both the storied French capital and to its vaunted surrounding farms, wineries and producers. Home to and originators of some of the finest and best-produced food in the accumulation of western culture, the student travelers are steeped in the techniques and trades that bring life to the notable comforting provincial and elegant urban menus.

Still, it may be the more existential effects of the trip that leave the longest impression. Many of the explorers will have never before possessed a passport, flown on an airplane, or even left the safe confines of central Indiana. While in Provence, sitting around the kitchen table listening to a farmer extol the virtues of his fromage, do those assembled learn as much about themselves, and the world in which they live, as they do about the nuanced distinction between the diets of the cows to produce the raw milk for the product?

Can it be that Ivy Tech Community College, and its many supporters, are opening eyes at the very same time they are pleasing palates? If we find that we have access to a new world, food or otherwise, don’t we take a bit more ownership in it?

Prices then and now

We complain a lot about prices. Justifiably, say I who strives to survive on Social Security and a few PLAIN TALK extra pennies here and there. Still, how out of whack are prices, really?

The Kiplinger folks recently published a comparative list featuring 1985 costs, what inflation has done to them, and what they are today.

The hottest thing around in 1985 was Rubik’s Cube. We bought thousands of them for $1.99 apiece. Current inflation would put that price at $6.34. The cube today costs 10 bucks.

A first-class stamp cost 22 cents compared to today’s 50 cents. In 1985, you could go to the movies for $3.50 and pay an additional 50 cents for a box of popcorn. Today, the ticket costs $8 and popcorn will run you $5.

A Big Mac at Mickey Dee’s cost $2.59 in 1985. Inflation boosts that to $6, but today it will set you back $8. As a further comparison, a hamburger today costs $2.

Millions were sold at 15 cents in 1956.

A half gallon of milk cost a dollar in 1985. The average today is twice that.

Eggs, on the other hand, cost less today than they did three decades back.

The average price of a new home in 1985 was around $96,000. Today’s inflation would boost that price to $226,000, while the average today stands at $375,000 or more.

Truth be told, we really don’t have a lot to complain about when we take a look at what has happened to income during the same time period. I earned a little more than $20,000 in 1985. That’s about what Social Security pays today.

On the other hand, technology has improved exponentially since then. A basic computer that cost more than $1,000 in 1985 is yours today for $500 to $700.

Plus, it is about a thousand times more powerful.

I remember when the VCR first came on the market. It sold for a whopping $2,000.

A few years later, just before DVD players made them worthless, you could buy one for less than $50.

Since I never throw anything away, I probably still have mine somewhere out in the garage. I think there is a box of VCR movies out there, too.

I occasionally experience migraine headaches, maybe one every few years. My last was actually in 2014. Since I’m not a regular sufferer, they tend to sneak up HUMOR on me before I realize what’s happening, and usually at inopportune moments.

Here’s what went down recently.

I’d just finished a triathlon in Muncie and was trying to figure out why I wasn’t enjoying the typical post-race euphoria. I was tired, sure, but I had no desire for a Big Mac (my usual self-congratulatory meal), nor was I excited to call Doo with the details (lost swimsuit, broken sunglasses, knocking over two bike racks).

As I stood in line for a pizza slice (it was free!), I noticed my vison going wonky. I could still see, but there was a definite blind spot in my right eye. It cleared after maybe 10 minutes, and I headed for my car.

As soon as I hit I-69, a dull headache began along with a bit of nausea. By the time I got to the Anderson exit, I was desperately pressing a cold water bottle to my head while dry-heaving into a Meijer grocery bag.

I pulled off the highway, parked at the Steak ‘n Shake and crawled into the back seat to wait out the pain.

I neither turned off the car nor locked the doors, but luckily, no one seemed to notice or care that a seemingly unoccupied minivan sat running for an hour.

Once home, I spent the rest of the day on the couch, “recovering.” Not from the race, mind you, but from the migraine. At least I should be good for another few years!

Sunday nights are stressful in the Wolfsie household because there are just so many great programs we both HUMOR want to see.To deal with this problem, my wife has a kind of spread sheet where she charts each show and then figures out how we can accomplish our viewing goals without missing anything.

“Dick, I’m going to tape ‘Madam Secretary,’ but we’ll watch ‘Homeland’ live, and I can also record that mini-series about John Paul Getty. Then we can DVR ‘Billions,’ unless we can get it ‘On Demand’ Monday.”

“OK, Mary Ellen, why can’t we record ‘Homeland’ later, then you can watch ‘Mystery Theater’ and I can watch the baseball game? Wait, I can’t miss ‘Deception.’ Can I watch both of them live?”

“You can’t watch ‘Deception’ live because it’s HDTV, which means we could only record one other show. I could watch sports with you, but you know there’s no chance of that happening.”

With the DVR, we have the option to zip past ads by using the fast-forward option.

My wife is a two-arrow person, mean-

ing she only presses the forward button twice. She wants to trudge slowly along so she doesn’t pass the desired starting spot immediately after the commercials. I’m a five-time arrow pusher. It goes forward so fast that I have to backtrack, because I always end up at the closing credits even though I’ve only watched 10 minutes of the show. Then I rewind with five pushes to find where I left off, and all of a sudden, I’m looking at the opening credits … again. The other night Mary Ellen shoved me off the couch because I was driving her crazy with the FF button. This is how push comes to shove.

At some point when you program too many shows at the same time, a prompt comes up that says: C O N F L I C T. Yes, indeed there is a conflict, but Mary Ellen and I always try to work it out, because we don’t want to go to bed mad. Assuming we ever get to bed. It’s difficult … with so many shows to watch.

STRAWBERRY PEANUT BUTTER PIE • 1 1/4 cups crushed pretzels • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup butter, melted • 1 cup creamy peanut butter • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese • 1/2 cup powdered sugar • 1 1/2 cups frozen whipped dessert topping • 1 can (21 ounces) Lucky Leaf Premium Strawberry Fruit Filling and Topping Directions: Combine pretzels and granulated sugar then stir in butter. Press crumb mixture onto bottom and sides of 10-inch pie plate. Cover and chill.

With electric mixer on medium speed, beat together peanut butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar.

Fold in whipped dessert topping. Spoon 1/2 cup pie filling into crust-lined pie plate. Carefully spread peanut butter filling over top. Top with remaining pie filling. Cover and chill 2 hours before serving.

How to choose a running shoe Commentary by Joseph Hui As the weather gets warmer, many people will lace up their shoes and get back into or starting a SPRING ACTIVITY running program for the first time.

For a runner, shoes are everything. But how does one choose the right shoe?

The first question is – what type of surface will you be running on, road or trail?

Trail-running shoes are typically heavier and designed to protect the foot and encourage stability on uneven, rocky surfaces. These shoes offer durable soles with more aggressive tread patterns and are generally wider and sometimes have an additional layer in the sole to reduce pain caused by stepping on debris.

Next, identify the type of running pattern you have. Find a well-used pair of running/ athletic shoes from your closet and examine the wear pattern of the tread. Your running pattern is generally broken into three categories: underpronation, neutral and overpronation.

Overpronation typically occurs in runners with a flat to medium arch. If the sole of the shoe is worn down near the inside of

the shoe near the big toe, then you have overpronation. Underpronation, the least common type, typically occurs in those with high arches and can be identified when the outside of the sole is worn down near the pinky toe. Neutral runners are in between and typically have even wear-pattern of the inside and outside of the fore foot.

For overpronators, shoes with a stiff midsole are generally more helpful and are marketed as motion-control shoes. For underpronators, neutral-type shoes are more helpful. Finally, for neutral-pattern runners, a stability shoe is typically the best fit.

The most important thing is how comfortable they feel. There has been a recent shift in the scientific literature to promote comfort as a strong predictor to reduce the incidence of running injuries.

For those who experience discomfort in the knees or hips during or after running, consider an over-the-counter orthotic.

‘Finale’ a final bow for seniors

By Heather Lusk editorial@youarecurrent.com The “Finale” performance is a showcase of Zionsville Community High School’s two show choirs performing the best of their songs from the year.

EVENT The May 11 and 12 performances also showcase how much the students have grown during the years since they first became part of the group.

“When I started I was not good,” said senior Meredith LaPlante, who started in the all-female Choralaires and joined the mixed choir Royalaires two years ago.

“You can see, dancing-wise, how much you grow, but vocally I can say I’ve even grown as well, like leaps and bounds.”

Senior Tali Mapes, president of Choralaires, has watched the new students develop skills this year and enjoyed sharing their first moments.

“I’ve watched everyone grow this year, all the new girls especially,” Mapes said.

“This is the last thing I get to see them experience for the first time.”

Beyond developing performance skills, students feel the experience has helped them grow as people.

“They teach us so many things that you wouldn’t necessarily get anywhere else,” junior Grace Mayo said. “You learn how to be gracious and to have an attitude of gratitude. You learn so much, not only about show choir, but about life.”

Students attribute much of their growth to music teachers Aaron Coates and Deana Broge, who lead the group.

“Coates and Broge also teach you to be good people,” senior Weston LeCrone said.

“I’ve grown as a better person and I’ve been able to appreciate people and give thanks more. I’ve definitely learned that.”

“Finale” showcases performances from the entire year with new choreography for many of the pieces. The opening act is inspired by “The Greatest Showman,” with some country/western, solo and group acts throughout the program. The show culminates with the award-winning competition performances by both groups.

“The best part of ‘Finale’ is you know everything, so now you get to enjoy it,” Mapes said.

The Choralaires and Royalaires begin practicing in the summer and continue twice a week throughout the year. Students also are able to take show choir as a class for school credit, allowing their practice schedule to be lighter.

“I think that shows our work ethic,” LeCrone said. “It’s entertaining but it’s not like we’re overworking.”

Mayo already knows she’ll be part of Choralaires next school year and is eager to see the changes the incoming students will experience.

“From a third-year veteran perspective, to see them grow and to watch their progress, to watch them in my shoes is going to be so exciting,” she said.

“Finale” is at 7 p.m. May 11 and 12 and at 2 p.m. May 12. The evening performances are 2 1/2 hours long while the Saturday matinee is an hour shorter to accommodate families with young children.

Tickets are available at zchoirs.com for $17.50 for evening shows and $12.50 for the matinee. Proceeds support the show choirs.

The Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre’s 201819 season opens Oct. 12 with the Cole Porter classic “Anything Goes.” The performances will run through Oct. 27 in The Tarkington at the Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

The rest of the schedule includes “Mary Poppins” from Dec. 7 to Dec. 29, followed by “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Feb. 8 to Feb. 23, 2019; “The Importance of Being Earnest” (in The Studio Theater, only show not in The Tarkington) March 22 to April 6; and “Disney’s Newsies,” April 26 to May 11.

“Newsies’ will be the central Indiana community premiere of the stage adaptation of the movie musical.

Background Info: This early 2000s home in the Long Beach Estates neighborhood of Zionsville was a great space for the homeowners and their family to grow, but it lacked their own personal touches. So, they wanted updates that reflected their unique taste.

The overall goal was to create a space that functioned better for the homeowner while giving it a modern look that reflected the homeowner’s personal taste.

1. The largest transformation came from extending the footprint of the island from 4 feet to 10 feet, adding more space for storage and replacing the kitchen table with island seating. This helped make the space appear larger and gave the homeowner ample countertop space!

2. New contrasting cabinetry and countertops were added to the kitchen and dry bar, providing a more modern look and adding plenty of unique storage solutions.

3. A large barn door replaced the pantry door, which freed up space and added a unique design element to the space.

4. Shiplap and encaustic cement tile details were added in the kitchen, dry bar and living room, tying the design together.

A ‘Nice’ place to visit Commentary by Don Knebel Each year, 5 million people visit Nice, located at the southeastern corner of France, to enjoy a picturesque stretch TRAVEL of the Mediterranean coastline.

The area’s popularity goes back 200,000 years.

The Greeks founded Nice as a port city along what is now known as the Côte d’Azur (Sky Blue Coast) in the fourth century B.C. They named the city after Nike, the goddess of victory. By the middle ages, Nice had become an important independent city, with many of its residents speaking Italian. In the late 18th century, Mont Boron, a hill overlooking the Bay of Angels on Nice’s southeastern end, was a favorite winter haven for British aristocrats, who enjoyed the mild weather and spectacular views. In 1820, reportedly to keep the locals employed during an economic downturn, the English visitors, with financial support from Nice’s Anglican Church, initiated construction of a walkway along the shore of the Bay of Angels. The walkway, named the Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English), now extends from the Nice

airport to the famous Cadran Solaire, a sundial where people standing on it become the shadow-casting gnomon.

In 1966, during construction near the base of Mont Boron, archaeologists discovered a site they called Terra Amata. Excavation revealed that humans had occupied the site, once adjacent the coast, no later than 200,000 B.C. and had used fire in their beachside huts, one of the earliest examples of the domestication of fire in Europe.

A small museum above the site displays items from Terra Amata, including simple tools made from beach stones.

Nice officially became part of France in 1860 and today, with a population of about 350,000, is the country’s fifth-largest city.

As the unofficial capital of the Côte d’Azur, Nice is the gateway to the fashionable resort destinations of Antibes, Cannes, SaintTropez and Monaco.

Adult Advocate – Prevail, Inc. Location: Noblesville, IN Type: Full Time Organization: Prevail, Inc. Description: Prevail, Inc. provides crisis intervention and restorative support services for adult, adolescent and child survivors of crime and abuse to residents of Hamilton and surrounding counties. Prevail is seeking a full-time adult advocate responsible for intervention and prevention services for victims of crime, including domestic violence and sexual assault. Services include individual and group facilitation.

Duties: Working in conjunction with staff to provide intervention and follow-up services to clients as needed, which may include (but are not limited to): intake assessment, community referrals and resources, court advocacy, assistance in filing protective orders, completing safety and action plans, and inter/intra-agency networking and advocacy on behalf of the victim.

• Facilitate weekly support groups. Provide individual services on an as needed basis.

• Maintain and update group curriculum, identifying resources, materials and speakers.

• Serve as a reference guide for the community in the areas of victim resources and violence prevention, by direct referrals for clients, and through public presentations and participation in community organizations.

• Complete 24-hour on-call crisis line shifts and providing backup service to the child advocacy center as requested.

• Collaborate with Prevail staff, other agencies, groups, organizations, and individuals to identify and develop prevention/intervention services for victims of crime and other populations within the community, as needed.

• Represent the agency in public and private presentations to increase awareness and educate audiences as to victim-related issues.

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or related field; or a combination of experience, education and/or training.

Competitive compensation package including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, paid holidays, and professional development. Salary commensurate with education and experience (starting salary - $16.49/hour).
