ZCS holds public hearing for two-question referendum

On April 29, the Zionsville Community Schools Board of Trustees held the first of two public hearings about two EDUCATION ballot questions for the November municipal election.

The first is to extend the 2015 operating referendum for an eight-year term, and the second is a capital referendum for the construction of a sixth elementary school and an expansion at the high school.

District leaders presented the expansion plan at the January 2019 board meeting as a solution to rising enrollment rates. According to the Indiana Business Research Center’s projections, ZCS will see an increase of 200-plus students each year for the next decade. Many schools in the district will reach, or exceed, capacity by 2023.

The board proposes the district-owned 875 campus property as home for the sixth elementary school. It will mirror Union Elementary’s floor plan. ZCS Supt. Scott Robison said a single redistricting effort that coincides with the opening of the elementary school in 2022 could rebalance attendance rates until 2028.

If the referendums pass, the high school expansion will create a second east-west corridor, add 32 classrooms and create a central-

ized cafeteria and multi-purpose space.

The last portion of the project includes adding parking spaces to the Transportation Center and reconfiguring Boone Meadow Elementary to create first-, second-, third- and fourth-grade classrooms from old spaces.

If the referendum is unsuccessful, Chief Operations Officer Rebecca Coffman said the district will encounter increased class sizes, portable classrooms, traveling classes, student traffic hazards and multiple redistricting efforts.

The expansion’s estimated total cost is $89 million. If approved, design will begin immediately, with the elementary school construction scheduled for mid-2020 and the high school additions for 2021.

According to Chief Financial Officer Michael Shafer, electing to continue the operating referendum another term not only keeps the school tax rate the same, but he predicts a decrease in the future. The referendum also funds one-third of the district’s teachers and counselors. If the ballot question is approved, a tax calculator will be available online for residents to determine individual impact.

The second public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 13.

St. Alphonsus to hold golf outing

The 18-hole, four-player scramble starts at 12:30 p.m.

“Registration begins at 10:45 a.m., and then we have our shotgun start,” said Lonny MacDonald, tournament chairperson.

“We put each team on a different hole on the golf course. So, all 18 holes will have a team on them, and then we’ll signal. So, everybody starts at one time.”

Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity, Special Olympics of Boone County and the Knights of Columbus Council 12510 Charity Fund.

“We’ve worked with the (Knights of Columbus) for several years,” MacDonald said.

“Several of our members have relatives and friends that have utilized the Special Olympics because they have special needs relatives or friends. We just wanted to do something to benefit some local charities and have a good time while doing it.”

The Boone County Youth Orchestra is set to perform at the Boone County Courthouse at 7 p.m. May 11 as part of “CelMUSIC ebrate! Boone County,” a free event highlighting the history of the courthouse.

“It is a beautiful, gorgeous building. I have done a lot of research on it and in old newspapers, (the courthouse) was described as ‘a song in glass and stone,’” said Barb Walters, executive director of Boone County Youth Orchestra. “I went to the historical room at the library to find out everything about the courthouse and came up with a lot of interesting information, some of it poignant, some of it rather hilarious, so I am working on a script and selecting songs I think musically depict the stories we wanted to tell.”

Formed in 2009, the orchestra has 40 members, 20 youth and 20 adults, including Walters, who plays strings. The group

has two concerts a year with one in the fall and one in the spring. Members range from elementary-school students to people in their 70s.

“We have several families who play together, a lot of small family groups, and it is very special for them,” Walters said. “It’s adults, generally, who maybe played in high school and stepped away and now their child is playing and they realize they have an opportunity to actually play and perform with their child, and that is very exciting.

We love that.”

Not only is the orchestra performing in the courthouse, but the clock tower will actually be part of the performance.

“Last fall, as Chaz Rhodes, our artistic director, stepped up and raised his arms for the downbeat for the first piece, the clock tower gonged seven times, and that made me think, ‘Let’s make that part of the concert,’” Walters said. “So, as soon as the seventh gong ends, we start a piece called ‘It’s About Time.’ I am very excited to open that way.”

Zionsville man runs to fundraise

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com The One America 500 Festival Mini Marathon is a time-honored tradition in the month of May. It’s MINI MARATHON the largest half-marathon in the United States, attracting runners from around the globe. Some participants choose to run as a commitment to health while others participate to bring awareness or raise money for causes they love.

Zionsville resident Frank Leonard was to have run his 42nd Mini Marathon May 4.

Leonard has chosen different causes to support each year.

“One year I raised money for a friend who was diagnosed with lung cancer,” he said.

“He was worried about his kids going to college. So, I raised money directly for him.

I raised money for the Fresh Start Recovery Center two years ago. It just varies on what the cause is at the time.”

This year, Leonard planned to raise money for the Best Buddies organization.

Leonard’s three daughters have been involved with Best Buddies. His daughters Clare and Colleen are running with him this year and helping to raise funds. Leonard also is a member of Zionsville Century Club.

Academy accepting applications

By Renee Larr news@currentzionsville.com The 11th annual Zionsville Police Dept. Teen Academy, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of ZionsPUBLIC SAFETY ville and Zionsville Parks Dept., is accepting applications from youth between the ages of 12 and 16. The academy is June 3-7.

The academy’s mission is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and teens.

Participants learn about different facets of police work.

“We go through a vast majority of what we do as police officers and put it in the one week,” Sgt. Sam Dennemann said.

“They’ll have different classes where they learn about crime scenes. We do drugs and alcohol awareness. The students will get

a tour of the jail. There will be a K-9 demonstration. They will also get to do some team-building exercises.”

Participants will receive a uniform to wear for the week.

“You can come from Indianapolis, Lebanon or anywhere,” Dennemann said. “One thing we want to make sure parents understand is this is not a scared-straight type of program. Our program is geared toward kids that are interested in law enforcement or what we do. It’s a fun program for them to learn more about us.”

Selected teens will serve as the color guard at the graduation ceremony.

Recollections of the Northwoods Commentary by Ward Degler Something happens every spring that surprises me. It’s a smell that I associate with the forest; a punPLAIN TALK gent, earthy smell, the dank aroma of awakening vegetation.

I grew up with this smell in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Dad was a forester with the Civilian Conservation Corps, part of the government’s effort to bring the nation out of the Great Depression.

The CCC performed double duty. It provided work for a virtual army of men who otherwise would be idle, and it provided the manpower to restore one of nature’s great gifts – the Chequamegon National Forest.

The forest comprised a million-and-a-half acres of virgin timber in northern Wisconsin — untouched stands of spruce, pine, balsam and hardwoods. Early lumber interests had swept in around the turn of the 20th century and clearcut giant sections of it. The government recognized the forest was in danger of being obliterated. In 1933, it established the CCC to replant the forest.

From 1933 through 1941, Dad’s CCC boys planted an estimated 10 million trees. They

also fought forest fires and built rudimentary roads through the forest.

The Chequamegon is the home of black bear, wolverines, badgers and whitetail deer. It also is plush with glacial lakes, swampland and bogs. Dad charged waistdeep through a bog to escape an angry female bear with cubs he had surprised while cruising timber. He hoped she wouldn’t leave her cubs to pursue him through the water. He was right.

Wild cranberry bogs dot the landscape, and one Sunday in late fall Dad waded into the freezing water to collect berries for Thanksgiving dinner. Mom had to rub his legs with a towel to restore his circulation.

On another occasion, he shinnied up a tree to get away from a disagreeable badger. It was dark by the time the badger left the scene and he had to rely on his cigarette lighter to help him find the compass he dropped on his way up the tree.

We also strung cranberries and popcorn into garlands for our Christmas tree that year.

There is a silence in those woods that gives you the feeling you are being watched. Once, when Dad took me with him to work, he put me in the care of an old Chippewa Indian gentleman who did odd jobs at the camp. He showed me that we were indeed being watched. He had me sit motionless at the edge of a stream so I could see the deer, skunk, wolves and lynx that came to the stream to drink.

I’ve been back to the Chequamegon a couple times. It’s different now. More grown up, I guess.

But there is still that smell. And the silence.

By Anna Skinner • anna@youarecurrent.com Boone County residents have until May 9 to submit comments, suggestions or concerns about the Indiana Dept. of Transportation’s proposal for an interCOVER STORY change modification at I-65 and Ind. 267 and a new interchange at I-65 and County Road 550 S. The proposal also includes modifications to the I-65 northbound exit ramp at Whitestown Parkway and the I-65 southbound exit ramp at I-865.

A public hearing April 23 in Whitestown allowed people to comment specifically on the environmental documents.

Mary Wright, an employee with INDOT’s Office of Public Involvement, said the project has had more public involvement than most other INDOT projects.

INDOT representatives explained the purpose of the project before opening public discussion. According to INDOT officials, the project is designed to improve traffic flow along the I-65 corridor, from I-865 to Ind. 267 near Whitestown. Another purpose is to provide improved connectivity between I-65 and the area along the CR 550 S corridor. The project is anticipated to cost up to $47 million.

INDOT officials said they are trying to address transportation requirements of the area, which is growing quickly, especially in industrial and commercial sectors.

The improvements are expected to reduce traffic congestion on I-65 and enhance safety. Approximately 65 acres of right-of-way is required for the improvements, which also includes the relocation of an agricultural facility that contains a residence.

The presentation showed the preferred Ind. 267 modification as a diverging diamond interchange. It also was the preferred design for the new CR 550 S interchange. A diverged diamond interchange recently opened in Fishers at Campus Parkway and I-69. A video detailing how to navigate a diverging diamond was shown at the Whitestown hearing.

Public speakers voiced concerns about the lack of berms and increased noise pollution. Zionsville resident Craig Triscari spoke on behalf of the Saratoga neighborhood, which is near the proposed construction.

“I wouldn’t say we oppose it or don’t oppose it because the traffic in that area is pretty bad ,” he said. “One of our concerns is the light, and noise issue increases dramatically if you expand a portion of the road toward residential areas. Whitestown needs to fix that area, put up berms and trees to block noise created by the events you are putting in. Additionally, we see the traffic in that area is going to

Let’s reduce urban sprawl

Commentary by Terry Anker Photographs from the turn of the 19th century record central Indiana’s vibrant interurban railway and trolley system. We were then the eighth-largest state in the U.S. Folks needed to move around. A century later, folks still need to move around. The state has grown by nearly three times (California and Florida have done well, too). But the tracks are mostly gone, buried under greasy layers of asphalt.

In their place rise dedicated bus, bicycle and automobile lanes. Some call for the ease, safety and environmental benefits of public transportation by train. Others doubt the claims preferring the relative freedom of cars.

Is it human nature to seek the new and improved and then, with the passage of time, come to romanticize the halcyon days gone by? Our collective public and private space has been filled with rightful voices holding up the good work of the late Sen. Richard Lugar. Add this one to the chorus. Still, there was a time, not that long ago, when Lugar was defeated in a primary of his own political brethren. Alas, some of those who urged his defeat now post photos proclaiming their undying admiration.

What is it that brings us to tire of, or even revile, the things that we love? We destroy them only to one day long for them being returned to us. We build up. We extinguish. We build up, again. Countless institutions, individuals, ideas, politicians and marriages suffer the cyclical fate. Have they betrayed us, or have we betrayed them?

Should we have kept the trains running, despite their shortcomings? Or, was it time to pave a new direction?

A vicious cycle Commentary by Danielle Wilson Triathlon season is upon us, and unfortunately, I may have already made a big mistake when it comes to defending my title here at Chez Wilson. In a moHUMOR ment of weakness and perhaps over-confidence, I purchased my husband Doo an honest-to-god tri bike for Christmas from a random Craigslist dude outside of Bloomington (no worries, friends, I had my 6-foot-3 son pick it up. Safety first!).

So, instead of riding an inexpensive, relatively heavy, quite ordinary road bike, he’ll be racing on a carbon fiber, aero-barred Mac Daddy, specifically designed for this event. Realistically, I probably bought him two to three minutes, which is all he needs to catch me. Ugh. I mean, what if I lose? I told Doo several years ago that he will never beat me because, unlike him, I am willing to die to win.

I’m not kidding. I call it “athletic brinkmanship,” and I am deeply committed to its

tactics. Blister? Ignore it. Dehydrated? Keep going. Signs of heat stroke? Suck. It. Up. This strategy has served me well in past races, but will it be enough this time?

A better question is, if Doo and his dumb new bike do win, can I rise above my arrogance and smack talk and truly be happy for him? Can I be a gracious loser and celebrate his success? I like to think I can, but I’m not entirely positive (which is why I am also considering various sabotage options. I’m drawn to the simplicity of an Ex-Lax dosing – classic but haven’t ruled out a good old-fashioned tire slashing).

I do know that next year I’m buying Doo a chocolate fountain.

More single-family, low-density housing will increase your commute time even more since the farther you have to drive, the greater the distance you’ll need to cover on the same roads everyone else uses.

And it increases the costs of housing, given a limited supply of land. The effects of housing laws favoring single-family housing have helped make housing prices and commutes dreadful in the Seattle area and already have here, too, on a relative basis.

Millennials, the largest segment of the U.S. population, tend to be burdened by student loan debts, which make housing down payments difficult. The second-largest segment of the U.S. population, baby boomers, tend to be downsizing now. Many of the employers in our area need to hire millennials in order to gain technical skills and survive in business.

Let’s help our businesses, the majority of our people and your commute by allowing more apartments per unit of land with Sycamore Flats.

Faded memories Commentary by Dick Wolfsie There are three things that make a marriage work. Unfortunately, nobody knows what they are.

HUMOR Communication is vitally important. This is a typical conversation my wife of 37 years and I have at the dinner table: “What are you doing tomorrow, Mary Ellen?”

“Let’s see, I have my morning exercise class, then a haircut at two, and then book club after dinner. And you?”

“I’m playing pickleball, then I’m shooting a TV segment and I’m going to write this week’s column.”

The next morning at breakfast: “Tell me again, what are you doing today, Mary Ellen?”

“I have exercise class, then a haircut, and book club after dinner. What’s on your schedule?”

“I’m playing pickleball, then shooting a TV segment and then writing this week’s column.”

Later that night: “So, what did you do today, Mary Ellen?”

“I had my exercise class, got a haircut

and went to a meeting. What did you do?”

“I played pickleball, did a TV segment and wrote a column.”

We don’t even realize we had the same exchange several times. Is this because we don’t pay attention to each other, or are we both losing our memories?

When I got home last Tuesday evening, Mary Ellen was nowhere to be found. She probably had said where she was going, so I wasn’t worried. About 9 p.m., she called.

“Hi, Dick, I’m having a great time in Boston with my old friend, Eve.” “You’re in Boston? I don’t remember you telling me that.”

“That’s because I didn’t mention it.”

“You didn’t? Why not?”

“Why bother? By the way, my flight arrives back in Indy at 8 p.m. Friday.”

“Have fun, Mary Ellen. You can tell me all about your trip when you get home.”

“Thanks, and I’ll bet you will be surprised to see me.”

Music and menu choices — It’s no secret that restaurants use colors, lighting and music to influence diner’s food choices. Now a study suggests that theory may be fact. The study analyzed customers’ food choices during periods of loud, upbeat music and during periods of quiet music. When the music was quiet, customers made healthier menu choices than when the music was loud.

The takeaway is that you should focus on the healthy choices regardless of the noise level.

Tucker, the average sale price for homes sold in Zionsville in March 2019 was $498,574, an increase of 26.1 percent and the highest price in the area. Homes in the city sold in an average of 80 days, just 2 days faster than in March last year.

New initiative benefits truckers — The Indiana Dept. of Transportation recently announced the launch of the Trucks Park Here system, a multi-state, regional effort to make interstate travel safer by creating a network of safe, convenient parking areas for truckers with the ability to collect and share real-time parking availability with drivers through dynamic message signs, smartphone applications, and traveler information websites. INDOT will feature 19 sites in the Trucks Park Here system along Interstates 65, 69 and 70.

Car insurance rates up in Indianapolis metro area — Car insurance rates are at an all-time high in the U.S., and in the Indianapolis metro area, they’re up 3.8 percent, according to The Zebra’s recently released

2019 State of Auto Insurance Report. That’s a 24.2 percent increase since 2011. The Indianapolis metro area data includes 117 zip codes and 74 cities.

Inlander, a consumer advocate and health-care consultant based in Fogelsville, Pa.. Across the nation, consumers who go to “off-site” urgent-care centers or medical practices (they are not located on a hospital’s campus but are owned by the hospital entity) are being charged facility fees that in some cases are higher than the cost of care that was provided. Sadly, the fees themselves are perfectly legal despite complaints to federal and state regulators and legislators from consumers and even some doctors.

Harpel added that it is not uncommon for customers to leave with several dozen doughnuts on their way to work during the week or stop in with their children for a quick breakfast on the weekend.

“A lot of the schools will order doughnuts and businesses and people like that,” Cole said. “They’ll just pick them up in the morning. They’re a unique thing: They are doughnuts that are square, not round.”

Square Donuts is open from 7 to 11 a.m.

Tuesday through Sunday. Customers enter through the 1st Street door.

Each morning, a variety of doughnuts are made at the Square Donuts location in Indianapolis and are shipped to Zionsville by 6 a.m.

“On the weekends, (business) is steady,” store manager Kim Harpel said. “We have sold out a couple of times.”

ZCHS show choirs take one final bow in ‘Finale’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School senior Katelyn Soares has more memories to make before heading to MUSIC college.

“I’m so, so excited to share the stage with all these kids I’ve really grown up performing with,” Soares said.

“It’s our final hurrah before moving on to the next chapters of our lives. Looking back at my four years in high school, show choir has truly been one of the biggest parts of life. I’m excited to be up on stage performing and doing what I love with the people I love one last time before moving on to the next part of my life.”

The “Finale 2019” performances will be at 7 p.m. May 10 and 2 and 7 p.m. May 11 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center.

Soares, who plans to major in arts administration at Butler Univesrity, is one of two co-presidents of Royalaires, the mixed show choir.

In addition to the Royalaires, the Choralaires, an all-female show choir, appear in the “Finale.”

Aaron Coates, co-director with Deana Broge of both show choirs, said the choirs will do a variety of material.

“They will do some things they’ve done earlier this year,” Coates said. “They will do a lot of new material just for this concert and also end their award-winning competition shows. It will also feature our jazz band combo instrumental group.”

There will be several acts of seniors doing solos and small groups.

The show choir competition shows, approximately 20 minutes each, are the last half of the second act.

Coates said the Choralaires competition show was about evil coming to the light.

“They were witches in the first half and angels in the second half,” Coates said.

The Choralaires’ set will include “Kiss of the Spiderwoman,” a medley of Disney villain songs, and “I Put a Spell on You.” The show ends with “Come Alive” from “The Greatest Showman.”

“Go Your Own Way.” Among the other songs are Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” and “Burn” from “Hamilton.”

“I loved it. it’s was so much fun. We do a comedy number halfway through our show called ‘Casualty of Love,’” Soares said. “I’m a big musical theater girl, so I was a sucker for the comedy number. It was fun to bring a bigger character to the stage. Often, we also see a lot of mixed groups do love and romance and more positive upbeat love themes. It was real exciting to bring another take on the show and do a more heartbreak and more angst theme we could relate to a little more.”

Senior Mitch Cross, a three-year member of Royalaires and one of the male dance captains, said this school year was special because there were a lot of underclassmen boys in Royalaires.

“They had to step up and do a pretty big role and I think it was super cool from the beginning of the year until now how much they’ve grown,” said Cross, who will attend Butler to major in finance and economics. “I’m looking forward to coming back next year and perform and see their growth even more.”

Cross said show choir has been a major part of the social group and the friends he has made.

“You’re with a group of around 55 kids for a lot of your time and you kind of get close to them, naturally,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of really good friends.”

Cross said “Finale” is always a special recap of the school year.

“We usually go through all the material we’ve learned and add six new songs,” Cross said. “It’s super cool to see how much we’ve done and grown as a group.

It’s a super nice way to perform with all of your colleagues one last time.”

Actors Theatre of Indiana, which will be celebrating its 15th season, has announced its lineup of shows for the 2019-20 season, kicking things off with “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” followed by a powerful presentation of “Alabama Story,” “Murder for Two” and “Damn Yankees.”

NHS teacher performs card tricks

By Mark Ambrogi • mark@youarecurrent.com Josh Cecil has been a magic fan ever since he can remember.

“My parents got me a magic MAGIC kit when I was 6,” Cecil said. “I did tricks here and there and read books (on magic).”

Cecil, 40, dabbled in magic on and off but said he stopped when he was 30.

The Noblesville High School teacher’s love for performing magic was then reignited by a student.

“Three years ago, I had a student (Matt Lingren) in one of my classes who was doing some card tricks, and I sort of remembered some of the card tricks I do, and we started going back and forth,” Cecil said.

“That got me hooked again. I went down the proverbial rabbit hole there into the world of magic.”

Cecil has performed professional, closeup card magic at private parties, corporate events, trade shows, restaurants and bars since September 2018.

Istanbul’s shopping paradise Commentary by Don Knebel The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey, is perhaps the world’s most famous shopping area. It also is among the TRAVEL few indoor places where both adults and children can get lost for hours.

In 1453 A.D., the Ottoman Empire, under 21-year-old Mehmed II, captured Constantinople, then with a population of about 500,000, bringing the Byzantine Empire to a close. The Ottomans were experienced traders and the city, soon renamed Istanbul, lay along major trading routes. In 1461, to finance converting the Hagia Sophia into a mosque, Mehmed ordered construction of a bazaar in the center of the city to market goods, such as textiles and gems, from throughout his realm. In 1520, Sultan Suleiman I, known to history as Suleiman the Magnificent, began a major expansion of the Ottoman Empire. With the Empire’s trading reach expanded, Suleiman significantly enlarged the bazaar. By the 17th century, Istanbul was the largest city in the world and its famous bazaar added slaves taken

in the Empire’s conquests to its long list of items being bought and sold.

Today, Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, occupying approximately 1.2 million square feet and featuring approximately 3,600 stores, is a shoppers’ paradise. Six days a week, between 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., at least 250,000 people, locals and tourists alike, crowd into its maze of 65 streets, most now covered with vaulted ceilings, seeking everything from life’s essentials to exotic works of art.

The Grand Bazaar is routinely listed among the 10 most visited places in the world.

Istanbul guides have two cautions for Grand Bazaar visitors. First, never pay the asking price, no matter how charming the seller. Second, remember which of the 18 named gates you entered if you hope to find your way back. I can tell you from personal experience that these warnings are disregarded at your peril.

Duct cleaning — Duct-cleaning services often claim that they can improve a home’s air quality and boost the efficiency of its heating and cooling system by sucking or blowing dust and dirt from HVAC system ducts. Some even claim that duct cleaning can improve respiratory health. However, the Environmental Protection Agency reports say duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent air-quality-related health problems, and that the presence of dust and dirt in a home’s ducts has not been shown to increase particulate levels in its air.
